A little over a year ago, Changbin had tasted spiced cider after months of you building up to it. And it was good, sure, but the two of you had made some bet about him confessing to the person he liked if you were right. Yet here he was, standing in the same kitchen as you, heart still yearning because nothing came of that bet. He was rolling out pie dough for you now, gingerbread cookies in the oven again (the skeleton gingerbread men would soon make their return), and listening to you sing softly under your breath while you worked on the berry filling for your pie. 

It was weirdly familiar, to be honest. This year, you’d been bragging for months about your pies. Something about how this mixed berry pie would be the best thing he’d ever tasted, especially if it was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of it while it was still warm. Yet all he could do was replay what happened last year. He’d tasted the cup of spiced cider, and never told you that you were right: it was the best thing he’d ever tasted… But he was sure that it was because you made it. Everything tasted better when you made it: coffee, snacks, ramen at two in the morning… It was just something about your touch. 

“Hey… Binnie?” You didn’t look up, and he could hear the scrape of the wooden spoon against the bottom of the saucepan. “Remember last year?”

It was as though you read his mind. “Yeah?”

“I mean… Our bet. The one we never went through.”

Changbin turned to look at you, although you still hadn’t moved—not to face him, at least. You sounded so much quieter. A moment later, he spoke up, “Yeah. I remember it.” 

“Did you ever talk to them?”

He shook his head.  How did he say this without giving himself away? He spoke to you pretty much every day, after all. “Not about my feelings for them.”

“Why?”

“I’m scared they don’t see me in the same way.” Changbin turned back, staring down at the pie crust. He reached for the glass dish you had set out, “And if I mess it up, I don’t want to lose them. Is that wrong?” 

“No! No, that’s… That’s why I never said anything to the person I like.” You paused. “I mean. I don’t know—I never told you that I never pushed about the stupid bet because I didn’t want you to lose someone you care for.” 

Oh. Changbin wasn’t sure what to say. It just reminded him of why he liked you so much. He watched the slow way you scooped up a little bit of the pie filling, tasting it and mulling over it.

“Hey… Binnie, can you come taste this?” You pursed your lips, looking over to him after a moment. You scooped out more, waiting for him to come to your side as you held up the spoon. “There’s something off and I can’t figure out what it is…”

He reached forward, just pulling your wrist forward so that he could taste it. He wrinkled his nose a little—it was… not as sweet as he thought it would be. He’d seen you add lemon juice and a few other things. It was all just tart. 

“I think it needs sugar—”

“No… No, I don’t think so,” you pouted. 

He shook his head. “Just a little more. You only used half a cup, right?”

“Right—Last time I made it, it was too sweet.” 

Changbin stared at you, fully aware of how your mind could wander sometimes when cooking (especially on your own). You were good about it, sure, but he still knew how you could be. “Did you add too much last time?”

Immediate silence. “No. Maybe. Shut up.” You reached for the bag of sugar.

“You wanna bet on it?” He crossed his arms. “Prove me wrong. If I’m wrong, I’ll tell my crush how I feel. If I’m right, you have to.” 

“What?” You looked at him. “What crush—”

He shook his head. “Uh-uh. I heard you telling your friend about some guy. If you can make me confess on a bet, I can, too.” 

If you wanted to say no, you could have. You would have. Instead, he saw something in your eyes as you nodded, agreeing to the terms after weighing your options. He stood by, watching as you measured out the sugar, mixing it into the filling. Soon enough, you tasted it again, and he could see the way your brows lifted. He had been right. You lowered your gaze for a moment, thinking to yourself. He’d expected you to pick up your phone, to excuse yourself and confess in private.

Instead, you met his eyes again. “Changbin? I’m in love with you.” 

He let out this strangled wheeze, as if you’d punched him in the stomach. When he thought about it, every single sign pointed to this truth. All he could do now was stare at you as he replayed every moment, lips parted as he tried to figure out what to say next. What to do next. Had that been a reason as to why you didn’t want him to confess last year? Because you were scared it wasn’t you? He’d have to ask you later. 

For now? All he could do was step forward, leaning in to kiss you. His lips pressed against yours, and he felt you reciprocate all too quickly, hands resting on his shoulders. His hands trailed up your sides before coming to linger at the bottom of your ribs, drawing you in closer.

“I think,” you mumbled against his lips when you pulled back, “we’re a little dumb, Changbin.”

He could only chuckle, drawing you back in. He would kick himself for being stupid later. Now? He’d savor the softness of your lips and the lingering taste of berries on them.

Pt. 1 Children of the kindly west (Kíli x Reader) — A tale of two dwarven hearts

This is a translation, more of a re-write, of a fanfiction I wrote first in German during 2013 - 2015 when the Hobbit movies premiered and I was just as obsessed and enamored by that adorable prince like everyone else. And reading the Silmarillion for the first time this year in February brought me back to middle-earth and reminded me of my love of dwarves. And this brings me here today. Enjoy! Prologue (Erebor)

The sharp winter wind blew snow around the Erebor, whereas on the inside it was cosy and warm.

Efís, an old dwarrowdam, knew that soon the children would come and demand to hear another story. The children visited her on every afternoon during the dark winter months and she would tell them stories of her own long life, from times long gone and stories from deep of the heart and soul of their people — the stories of the dwarves of the kingdom of Erebor and beyond.

Some of these stories were true, some were not, some pretended to be one thing while actually being the other and with some, well, there was just no way of telling anymore.

Today, she decided, would she tell the children a true story from the time, when their people still lived in the blue mountains, the Ered Luin, before the Erebor was reclaimed and Smaug slain.

It was a love story, tender and pure and true but also so sad and heartbreaking that Efís had to wonder briefly for a moment if maybe the story was too much for the children to bear…

A soft knock on her door pulled her out of her thoughts and she went to greet her small visitors.

A group of children, all around age twelve to 40, looked up to her with big, joyfully expectant eyes, filled with excitement about the story they were about to hear and the sweets they would get and the hospitality they would be blessed with.

„Good evening, Efís“, they all greeted with fresh, glowing faces, they must have played in the snow for a while. Their little noses and cheeks were rosy and running.

„Good evening, dears, come on in“, she ushered them inside and the children took off their boots and coats, all covered in snow and went on to sit down on plush pillows and thick furs and little stools by the fire.

While the children found their seats Efís brought them her already prepared hot mulled berry juices  and fresh gingerbread and other baked goods, some of them still hot from the oven.

The hot juice and the pastries and the little cakes helped to quickly thaw the frozen faces and frozen hands of the children.

Shortly after the first group of children had arrived, was there another knock on her door and a second group came into her chambers and also a third one after the second!

Efís had prepared a lot of her famous hot mulled juice and gingerbreads and cookies and pastries in advance and had plenty to serve to her little guests.

When everyone had their cup with hot juice and some gingerbread pieces, she sat down herself — she sat down into her armchair by the crackling fire and looked over the children, who chatted and laughed with each other, some pulling their younger siblings or cousins on their laps and Efís smiled, time to begin!

„Children!“, she said with her firm, calm voice and clapped her hands, „please calm down, do you want to hear what story I have for you today?“

The expectant faces were immediately turned to her and she nodded in approval.

„Very well, children, are you all warm and cosy?“

„Yes, yes, yes!“, they screamed but quickly got quiet again, when Efís continued to speak.

The air was filled with the scent of spices, the freshly baked pastries and the scent of the wood and the smoke in the fire. 

And there was no sound besides the soft breathing of the children, an occasionally sniffling or cough and the crackling of the fire and Efís’ kind, wise voice.

„Today I will tell you a love story — it began many, many winters ago, long before my own birth and when our people still lived in the blue mountains far in the west of middle-earth, far, far away from here…

It was winter and snow had covered all of the mountains with a coat of white wonder. Just like here.

Hardly any dwarf was out on the streets on that day, when our story began, but instead everyone was in their warm houses and occupied themselves with activities for snowy afternoons. 

And so did the heroine of our story as well…

She sat by her window by candle light and read one of her favourite books. 

She loved reading stories of big adventures, courage, friendship, honour, loyalty and love. But her desire to experience such a story herself was dim in the background of her heart, she was happy and content with the life she had and she lived it with joy.

Our heroine also had a little sister, named Syniver, a grey pony and her father was a beloved and popular goldsmith in the town.

To put it simply — she lived a calm, comfortable life and did not know yet, how could she know, that her future was waiting for her. And that her future was not as calm and comfortable as her current life.

And she also did not know that she would soon meet the one again after many, many years, who would seal her fate and destiny.

The one person who would also be her One…

So at the moment was she only feeling peace and contentment, while she happily soaked up her favourite story but not for long anymore. Because her mother called for her, rather impatiently, from downstairs…“

Efís looked around in the children’s faces who had all listened to her with as much attention as they were able to give.

She took a sip of her own mulled juice and continued telling the story that her own grandfather had told her when she was just a girl herself.

My dream cottage would be far off from other people. It’d sit on a nice plot of land, giving me room for a garden, maybe a few animals. I’m not sure if cottages really have sunrooms, but I’d love to have one. Maybe surrounded by woods so I can go and pick fresh berries. I’d want the entirety of it to feel like you just stepped straight into a fairytale.

Definitely sandwiches. Tea or lemonade. Fresh fruit. Maybe something sweet for dessert. (I think it also depends on what kind of mood I was in, yknow).

🕯 Favorite candle scents?

I love candles that smell like the pure essence of fall. Like yesterday I got a Mulled Cider candle. I also like dessert ones, but not the ones that are overly sweet. Also ones that have like a nature/clean type of smell. One of my last candles was called Evergreen Spruce and I was absolutely obsessed with it. It smelled just like a Christmas tree.

With the conclusion of the White Heron Cup, this year’s Ethereal Ball is starting to wind down. Most students stay in the ballroom, determined to squeeze more dancing and socializing into this evening. Some, exhausted by the night’s festivities, head off to their dorm rooms for a well-deserved night of sleep.

But the night is still young! And yet more students are eager to party for as long as they can, especially after weeks of hearing that certain intrepid merchants would be selling hot street food long into the night. Wandering into the town square, you find it bright and filled with festivities: warm food, hard drinks, and small houses rented for private parties among friends.

[ Dona Dona Fried Set ] - A full-blown meal all on its own, featuring juicy fried chicken, deep-fried cheese with tomato sauce, and a basket of fried potato slices. Every bite you take tastes so good, but feels so bad.

[ Street Crepe ] - A novel take on an old classic, these handheld, stuffed crepes come in varieties both savoury and sweet. A light and fluffy treat to cap off the evening.

Do you have seasonal traditions? Not like related to holidays necessarily, just the season. What kind of activities do you do to make it feel like it's autumn/spring?

Well, I used to have a lot more back when I lived in the boonies. A lot of the traditions/activities revolved around the garden. Nowadays it's summer meaning cold booze, winter cozying up with a warm cup of cocoa or mulled wine.

Spring: toiling the soil, planting seeds, making the greenhouse ready and other things to get the garden in shape after a long winter. It's a whole lot of getting rid of the old and preparing for the new.

Summer: enjoying the sweet summer fruits that are ripe. Plucking berries and preserving them as jam or freezing them down for the winter. A lot of days spent outside just because you could. It's exciting waiting for the new potatoes to be ready to eat.

Autumn: harvest. Getting all of those hardy crops into the house, and making sure they're stored correctly. I distinctly remember drying onions and trying them up. It's also time to pickle whatever you can pickle. I still buy beets to pickle them around November or so, because it's just not the same getting ones that are made in a factory.

Winter: trying not to freeze too much. Making all those really comforting dishes that warm you right up. Baking way too many cookies for Christmas. You never know when the chance hits that you can feed some to guests, or give them as gifts. The whole eating many of the same dishes as we do every year. Also oranges. So many fkin oranges. Maybe stuffing a couple with cloves for the great smell it leaves.

My own little thing: I celebrate winter solstice on the 21st of December by lighting candles and incense, letting the flames be my only source of light for a couple hours for the longest night. It feels spiritual, even though I'm by no means religious.

Cookie Hotel au: Escape the Fire

In his bed RedBerry Juice Cookie wakes up with the nice warmth of a fire. He doesn't remember a fireplace being in his room so it must be a new addition from his family. RedBerry Juice Cookie has not been awake for an entire week but that's nothing new for him.

More than a year ago he fell ill, unable to move with his hair and a tooth falling out he's been stuck in bed constantly falling asleep and waking back up. His family has been trying everything, his sister has even been studying alchemy with her father to create a potion that might save him. But nothing has worked.

His complexion has turned blue and his hair has turned white, but he doesn't mind. Being sick hasn't changed much of his lifestyle. He was never an active person and he was never interested in physical activities, he especially didn't care for doing his family duties and is glad he no longer has to do them anymore.

The comfort of the fire helps him reflect on everything and begins to realize he doesn't even know what made him sick in the first place. He was never around any sick people and his maids always made the house very clean.

RedBerry Juice Cookie stares at the ceiling as he bathes in the warmth as he questions this.

"So warm.....Something smells nice." He thinks to himself.

At that moment his sister, PurpleBerry Cookie opens his door and walks over to him.

"Red we need to go, the house is on fire." She said as she approached him. RedBerry Juice Cookie wasn't surprised, his luck just seemed to work like that. He decided he would prefer to lay in the warmth in the fire then embrace the cold outdoors.

"Just go without me." He said in a relaxed tone, PurpleBerry Cookie didn't bother to argue with him knowing it was pointless. She grabs her brother's arms and they escape together out the window.

So the first one here is not really a theory, or maybe it is. I'm not really sure.

Vampire cookie and Alchemist cookie are definitely purple and red berry juice cookies right?

Or at least vampire cookie is. Which makes sense since they're both table grape based instead of wine based grapes.

Which leads me to believe that maybe their parents are Carbernet juice Cookie or Petit Verdot Cookie.

Petit Verdot cookies don't actually exist but it's the closest I can think of to red, green and purple wine grapes.

The full lore for this family is, Purple and Red cookies were born in a wealthy family in the Hollyberry kingdom. Mulled is a part of the consul of elders in the creme republic and was constantly going back and forth between kingdoms.

One day while Red and Purple were alone at home the house was burned down by a RedBerry assassin.

Mulled was at the creme republic during the incident and usually stays in the creme republic for many months before seeing his family again.

Feeling betrayed by the Hollyberry kingdom and not wanting to risk being attacked again Red and Purple fled seeking for help near the border of the creme republic, hoping to speak to their dad.
