Marvel Fans and What we talk about
I haven't watched any of the movies yet except the one about spiderman so I can't comment much on which I think would be the best here but seems like a lot of the fans love spiderman's return!!
Tumblr media
Regardless, I've been thinking a lot lately about how the Marvel fandom interacts through multimodal content across social media platforms, and I I came across this post by m.c.u.n. Spider-Man, Wolverine, Deadpool, and characters from Avengers: Endgame.
I love how replies turn into a discussion of the Marvel multiverse and variations in character arcs across different films. I also love this post for bringing everyone into the discussion. I am noticing something that is common in fan communities: fans come together to correct each other’s knowledge, provide additional context, and, in the process, assert their identity as knowledgeable Marvel fans.

Buying Tumblr vs Buying Twitter
https://www.theverge.com/23506085/wordpress-twitter-tumblr-ceo-matt-mullenweg-elon-musk
(...)
But let’s start at the beginning. Why did you buy Tumblr?
Tumblr was always WordPress’s best competitor. I feel like Tumblr combined the very best parts of blogging and social networks, and it innovated the form of social media by introducing multimodal posts. One, I was excited to bring some of the fun back to blogging, because I think that everyone should blog more.
Yes, I agree.
Two, I wanted to see if we could create a mainstream social media that wasn’t reliant on surveillance capitalism or advertising as its primary business model. We run ads on Tumblr, but we also have upgrades that turn off ads, and we’re introducing lots of other subscriptions — some fun, some serious. If we can make it a subscriber-supported thing, then we can truly be aligned. Even if I were no longer running Automattic or Tumblr, the business model would align the users with its business.
Finally, I felt like we need a space on the internet for creativity, art, and artists. The other social spaces on the internet have gone different directions. Twitter became a lot more about arguing, Instagram became about showing off, and Facebook became about weird people you went to school with saying weird things. Tumblr always had this frisson, this magic. Instead of an angry mob, it’s more like comedy improv. There’s a “Yes, and…” to it.
Tumblr is a collaborative group art project at scale, for sure.
Totally. We have seen some amazing examples of that, even in the last few weeks with Goncharov. At its best, it’s like, “Well, what if people’s social media time could go to something like that?” It’s something that puts a little more control in the hands of users. You should feel good after using it and you feel creatively charged. That’s what we have been working on since we bought it....

Saw you're an english major, was kinda curious since I've considered going back to college with maybe that as my major. whats it like? what goes into it?
I'm not fully sure what I'm asking to be honest
Typically, most schools that have English degrees will have two, occasionally three, tracks to choose from: Literature, Writing & Rhetoric, and (less common) Creative Writing.
English majors across all disciplines focus on critical thinking, communication, genre studies, a deep understanding of the inter workings and functions of the English language (linguistics & grammar), analysis and interpretation of texts, culture studies, bibliographical studies, research, composition of narrative and other creative works, and studies of theoretical interpretation. The track chosen decides what your studies emphasize from that list.
— Literature
High emphasis on reading, interpretation, analysis, history and culture studies, and theoretical interpretation.
This is my track. My work largely consists of reading a broad spectrum of literature (and other media), analyzing it through a technical, cultural, philosophical, and theoretical framework, and writing about it. This is probably the most stereotypical assumption of what an English major is honestly. These are the people who teach you how to read and interpret and think.
However, “English” is a multimodal discipline. I’ve written 12page papers, written blog entries, digitized a 17th century cookbook, made a podcast, and worked with a lot of technology while learning about old bibliographical techniques.
Some classes: Brit Lit Medieval—1760, World Literature, Linguistics, Fiction, Intro to Poetry, Advanced Grammar, Latina Writers and Filmmakers
— Writing & Rhetoric
High emphasis on communication, argumentation in media/texts/writing, critical analysis, history, and technology.
Not my track, but I work closely with this track and they have some overlap in classes. These are your technical writers, your copy writers, your translation studies people (which I do too), your emphasis on how a piece of writing is arguing something or what it is saying rather than the full cultural history and implications that led to it. These are your scholars who break down arguments and explain in detail how they work and where they came from not only in writing but in visual and auditory media as well. High emphasis on writing, not so much on the broad spectrum of literature analysis. These are the people who learn and teach you how to write and argue and think.
My friends on this track have written papers, made podcasts, built websites, made visual presentations, and done more technical pieces of writing (instruction manuals/tutorials etc.).
Some classes: Visual Rhetoric, Linguistics, Adv Grammar, Analysis of Satire, Digital Composition
— Creative Writing
Hardest to find amongst English programs but not necessarily rare.
Easiest to summarize I guess. Creative writing breaks down and teaches the fundamentals and elements and techniques of genres. Ranging from poetry to drama to fiction and narrative non-fiction.
— Honorable Mention: English Education
This track is sometimes categorized under education tracks and sometimes under English. Emphasis on becoming a teacher specifically in English.
——————
I’m biased, but I fully believe that an English major is an under appreciated major. We’re one of the most versatile majors, have high communication, adaptability, and comprehension skills, and are good analytical and creative thinkers.
Most programs nowadays also train us in various forms of media, technology, and old traditional communication methods.
Anyways… thanks for asking and if I didn’t answer something you wanted to know, let me know. This is a weird special interest of mine I could babble on about forever.

Get to know me questions
Thanks for the tag @unmaskedcardinal I really do like these and I’m still working on the last thing you tagged me in lol.
Last song: I tend to go on walks and listen to stuff I can dissolve into. Today it was an EDM album that the twelve songs from the Ocarina of Time, which I am trying to finish. So the last thing listened to was a danceable version of Zelda’s Lullaby and I found it here
Favorite color: I love a deep, rich jewel tone purple
Currently watching: nothing, really? I’m not a big TV person most of the time. I find it hard to sit through something for an extended period, spouse and I have wildly different tastes in media.
Last movie: Romulus, which I thought was a pretty solid entry in the Alien franchise.
Sweet/spicy/savory: yes? Like it all. Let’s go.
Relationship status: married since 2009. I have a good partner. We have a compatible weirdness.
Current obsessions: the Ocarina of Time. I think I’m going to finally finish this game. It’s spilling over into other things at the moment. Professionally: multimodal pain control/management of osteoarthritis, especially in non canines. Everybody thinks about dogs. Cats and rabbits have bad joints, too.
Last thing I googled: appears to be show hours for New York Comic Con
Tagging…. @mistresslrigtar @cyraclove @zeldadiarist and anyone else who wants to play

A WEIRD PROJECT & WEIRD PEDAGOGY
I’m reminded sometimes that I really believe in the methodology behind this project. Maybe that sounds silly; of course I believe in it, I’ve certainly poured enough energy into it. It’s just that the whole project is sort of a joke—I mean, it’s a kind of complicated, extremely time-consuming, pretty esoteric joke about (on?) academia. And there’s a significant air of laughter at the highly polished, professionalized structures we’ve set up around art and creative work throughout this project as well. I think it’s funny. I put my Ph.D. certificate on my refrigerator. I talked about Captain America’s butt at academic conferences. I wrote TWICE AS MUCH as I needed to for my dissertation just so I could justify close reading gay sex alongside Victorian ghosts!! Hilarious.
But, like, you know, I do actually think this is a legitimate method of scholarship. A valuable method. A portable method, which can be applied to any number of subfields within literature and the arts. A method that, if framed the right way, is pretty compatible with more traditional academia. Multimodal, cross-platform, interdisciplinary—in the tradition of queer scholarship that blends the personal and academic—a way of making the case for the humanities in this time of precarity. I think I’ve put my energies mainly in places other than academic publishing, however, because the heart of what I do in academia, why I want to be here, is actually teaching.
In fact, it’s possible that teaching is a more natural extension of the methodology behind this project than academic publication is. Especially undergraduate teaching, which encourages students to connect what they do in the classroom with their lives, their communities, their society. The longer I teach, the more I understand the value of projects like mine, projects that meld literary criticism and creative work, critical writing and public-facing communication. My students read detective fiction and make their own detective as a way to articulate their point of view on justice, power, and knowledge; they turn a portion of Dracula into a social media post in which Mina and Lucy become real young women grappling with gendered expectations in their love lives. This semester, one class is going to attempt an online “library” to share of all sorts of texts we find meaningful to our lives. I hope it turns out really weird.
This project is both theory and practice. And my teaching is both theory and practice. We think and theorize through creation. We recognize that thinking and theorizing are themselves a kind of creation. My teaching feeds my work, my work feeds my teaching—and it’s fun. I’m really lucky. I’m happy to be starting another school year.

THROWBACK SUNDAY
Tumblr media
18/8/24 The Olympics have come and gone. The highlight of the summer, there was enormous amount of space and connection in both opening ceremonies torch and closing ceremonies medals.
Last year Google posted a video reel of hits based on most frequent searches on its X page. various moments ranging from sports to pop music to protests and peace-advocates made the cut.
Today in sifting through the grain of consumer-apps, we rely on the unobtrusive Play Store. Google understood the mass appeal of social media and mobile support early on, and figured out service models like *GoogleTalk, *Google+ and *V8, all native to Android TM.
Tumblr media
● KEEPING DATA TO OURSELVES?
With expansion of machine learning services ( including TENSOR processing unit upgrade and COLAB integration ) there will be unprecedented interest in protecting data from "scrapers".
This interest is in opposition to one of the founding principles of Google, to take the world's knowledge and make it universally accessible. Libraries are taking down books in response to complaints, and even Archive.COM reports losing its legal claim to 500,000 published works, all because the publishers vowed to 'secure' those titles.
● MIDDLECLASS TAX DOLLARS VS MULTIMODAL AGENTS
For better or worse this panic: over A.I. getting in touch with source data, and training on looks, poems, or speech style IS REAL. Pretty much every 12 weeks new models are rolled out and leaderboards construct new tests / build better red teams.
Tumblr media
Google, being a W3C leader: is heading the efforts to 'fix the environment' by requiring guardrails in the form of digital watermarks . Second, encouraging banning of bad actors, angry scrapers going behind people's backs just to gain access into their private data. Apple is also motivated to redeem their brand from security flaws either through monitoring or misinformation prone apps.
We grew up with an /Internet which might have been slow, but for the most part there was a reliability in security /protocols and /antiviruses. However, our children will have to cope with a deluge of generated ads, artificial scripts and comments.

Original Post (Week 3)
@npfannen
"What will your revision process look like? Why does a strong approach to revision matter for you, after graduation?"
My revision process for this upcoming multimodal essay/infographic will most likely be something along the lines of finishing a rough draft and then immediately taking at least an hour-long break before returning to revise. This usually helps me recuperate some energy and brain power after a long work/study session and makes it easier for me to analyze my work from a higher perspective or get a fuller picture before I begin revising.
Tumblr media
My revision process will be lengthy and tedious because I know that I want to create an infographic that can really help me throughout the semester and also through the rest of school and into my career. A strong revision approach will matter to me after graduation since communication skills are an important aspect of Media Arts, and to be successful in this field you have to have strong communication skills.

Ok live action atla reaction for episode 2.
It was better than episode one. Where episode one was a dumpster fire actively trying to hurt me both as an avatar fan and as someone with a basic understanding of how multimodal media is used to craft stories, episode two is fine.
I hesitate to call it great or even good when my only other point of reference so far is one of the worst episodes of TV I have seen in the past decade. Or possibly just ever. But I can comfortably say it was fine.
Perhaps my biggest on going issue is still the dialogue. When they don't sound like they just walked out of a LA therapists office, they instead sound like they are either in a circa 2010 disney original tv show, or just straight up like the writer explaining directly to camera how they are justifying skipping events from the animation because they have made the characters so much more mature and self aware of what they need to do/become for the sake of saving the world.
In short, Sokka remains unfunny.
I can't believe the "I bet you taste like chicken" comment wasn't even in response to Momo doing anything in particular. Momo is just there chilling on Aang's shoulder and Sokka is glaring at him like Momo is his arch rival, talking about a singular non mishmash animal that he has probably never even seen before because where the fuck where the chicken coops in the south fucking pole!?
Katara's strives in bending probably look impressive to anyone who hasn't seen the first episode of the animation where she already outclassed her current progress. Girl was out there (accidentally) splitting icebergs out of anger, but I'm meant to be impressed she can make a water ball in 3 seconds? I hate how badly she has been nerfed.
I also hate how they made it that Gram Gram actively helped nerf her by denying Katara her inheritance until it was clear she was gonna hop on a flying bison and go on adventures with the Avatar. She didn't even give her the scroll directly and apologise to her face. Just shoved it in her bags with a sorry note and now we're deprived of Katara stealing from pirates! Which means Katara is gonna be carrying that "goody toe shoes always morally correct with no room for nuance mom friend" burden for who knows how much longer now.
We did FINALLY get some Iroh adjacent behaviour from Uncle Iroh. Him trying to cajole Zuko into eating some street food and getting distracted mid sentence because he noticed some sticky rice wasn't perfectly executed but it was better executed than any other Iroh moments we have seen so far. Mostly he still hits as gaslighty and condescending. And don't get me wrong. OG Iroh COULD be gaslighty but never so fucking blatantly. There's no finesse, no gentle distractions layered with concern. Where is the charisma? Instead we effectively get him going "you're wrong. you should consider giving up." at every other time he talks to Zuko (less so this episode than last but only because he "tries" to teach Zuko diplomacy. Yes there are quotes around tries for a reason. He basically says Do This, gives no real guidance on how and then steps in to do the thing the second Zuko is sucking because he's never had to do this shit before and doesn't want to do it now especially since he has no idea wtf Iroh means).
Anyways, didn't they say they were overhauling the Ba Sing Se arc to make it less gaslighty? Yet they let this vibe fly with Iroh of all people?
We did at least get Suki though. And she's mostly pretty recognisably Suki. Save for the instant and hardcore pining for Sokka because he immediately became a surrogate for her yearning for the outside world. I can appreciate that they wanted to nix Sokka's sexism and instead just made him insecure about his status as a warrior, and they almost made it work but they cut themselves off from such an interesting interplay of tension by having Suki just as, if not more, eager to show off her skills to Sokka as he was to act like he was a big tough southern water tribe warrior. They were on to something when they had her question how he could be the guardian of his village if he was here with the Avatar instead. They could of had her be dismissive of his claims at being a warrior when he was clearly acting like an undisciplined blow hard and the fanthrowing/chokehold scene could have been a "stop acting tough, I am the warrior you're claiming to be" moment which wouldn't have involved any sexism on either side and have made a basis for mutual respect when Sokka comes along to the training hall. They could have had him humbly ASK instead of awkwardly miming until Suki noticed. We could have still had Sokka in Kyoshi Warrior garb. It would have stuck closer to the original, it wouldn't have taken up more time, and it would have created a much more satisfying interplay of tension between the two characters which also would help ground their future relationship in mutual respect.
I will say though, although the writing fucking choked the cinematography, the lighting team, the actors and the editors all came through with creating a sense of attraction between the two characters. So that wasn't nothing.
Kyoshi was a high point. Still fell victim to the dialogue writing, but a very strong perfomance by Yvonne Chapman accented excellently by the sound design team during some of the more intense parts when they layered in all the other Avatar voices. She was a good choice for giving Aang a bunch of hard truths and I liked how she both told him he had to find his own path but when he kept pushing for a more concrete answer just started telling him to deal with shit her way, because that felt very Kyoshi.
Also the entire sequence of her manifesting through Aang to show him a bit of what he could do as the avatar and lowkey to protect HER island was fucking badass. Not a single fire nation soldier left that island with clean underwear after facing Avatar mother fucking Kyoshi.
Unfortunately I was very quickly brought down from this high by Aang closing out his part of the episode by saying that Kyoshi told him something terrible was going to happen to the Northern Water Tribe if he didn't get up there and do his duty as the avatar to stop it. A conversation beat that happened off screen btw.
This annoys me for several reasons, starting with since when can the Avatar's collective past lives tell the future? The big threat to the Northern Water Tribe was originally Zhao coming to kill the moon spirit, which is a culmination of his lust for dominance and power and his plans to capture the avatar for himself. So either that isn't happening (and they are unnecessarily trying to revamp a perfectly good finale to stroke their own egos) OR they have made the nonsensical decision to foretell this tragedy in the show instead of just letting the tension mount naturally because 80+% of their audience already know shit goes down in at the Northern Water Tribe. Which annoys the fuck out of me. Aang was always going to go North for water bending training anyways, and especially this borderline hyper responsible version of Aang who knows even if it will hurt emotionally he will need to learn the other elements. There was no good god damn reason to add a second layer of urgency by saying if he doesn't get there bad shit will happen!
My closing rant is really more of a question, but why the fuck is it every time we see a firelord, (Sozin and now Ozai) that they are just hanging out in the middle of the fucking chamber chatting with some fucking guys until a prisoner/messenger arrives while the fire throne looms menacingly in the background upstairs and 50 feet back. Where is the menace and pizazz of them sitting looking down on literally everyone and everything from up on high flanked by flames, committing atrocities with a wave of their hand and a few low spoken words that everyone grovels to hear? I believe in Daniel Dae Kim's ability to look scary and lordly on a fancy chair, especially if the fancy chair has FIRE, why doesn't the director?

Misrepresentations of Egypt(ians) in the Media
Tumblr media
Adele James playing Cleopatra in Netflix's Cleopatra (2022), vs. a statue of Queen Cleopatra.
Afrocentrist narratives misrepresent Egypt and Egyptians in Pop-Culture despite ample scientific and historical evidence that prove those narratives wrong.
This blog attempts to investigate the mechanisms and agendas of how Afrocentrist narratives and relevant ethnic and racial misrepresentation of Ancient Egyptians manifest in the various forms of multimodal digital media and pop-culture, from an Egyptian perspective. It also aims to delineate the repercussions of Afrocentrism on the history and heritage of both: Egypt and Sub-Saharan African nations, mainly to prove that Afrocentrism only ensures the spread of racist hate speech towards Northern Africans whose skin is not black rather than celebrate the greatness of the long shunned Sub-Saharan African heritage. Afrocentrism should be about reviving the tribal heritage the Black peoples of Africa instead of claiming credit for other nations’ history. This paper will basically criticize the pseudohistorical Afrocentric narrative that is advertised in Pop-Culture, official museum displays of defaced replica of Ancient Egyptian statues to have Sub-Saharan features, as well as theatrical and cinematic normalization of the image of Ancient Egyptians played by Black actors. The results of the ongoing Afrocentric (social) media campaign can only fuel socio- and geopolitical conflict among the peoples of Africa as well as further bury the Sub-Saharan precolonial heritage by only focusing on falsely proving their ownership of Ancient Egyptian accomplishments.
Since the 1970s, Afrocentricity/Afrocentrism has been around, defying logic, history, and science. Yet, somehow this culturally-appropriating narrative has found its way out of the founding academic papers into a lot of recent media productions such as: Netflix’s 2023 ‘documentary’ “Cleopatra” in which the Macedonian-Egyptian Queen and other Egyptian characters are portrayed Black, to which Egyptians reacted in a social media campaign to defend the attempt to blackwash their history through falsifying information that definitely arise from an agenda. This Afrocentric belief is advertised by celebrities, like Michael Jackson in his music video “Remember the Time” in the 1970s; Beyoncé and Rihanna who portrayed Queen Nefertiti in a Dutch museum and on Vogue cover respectively (Yee), in 2023; as well as Kevin Hart who supported a group of animators on the TV program “Shark Tank”, granting the team Black Sands Entertainment around $500,000 to promote Afrocentrism through Anime and Comics, resulting in an online backlash from Egyptians under the hashtag #CancelKevinHartShow that led to taking down his stand-up comedy show that was scheduled to take place in February – also in 2023 (Nowar). It is worth mentioning that the academic world as well is still actively pushing for Afrocentric ideology, as a group of African American professors had planned the One Africa Conference in February 2022 to take place in Aswan, and the Egyptians reacted with the hashtag #stopafrocentricconference, and it was indeed taken down (Aidi).
Hence, the movement is currently celebrated by a lot of Black people, especially African Americans, who engage in online campaigns, supporting the spread of the false Afrocentric beliefs promoted in popular media, especially in the last couple of years. In resistance, the Egyptians are launching awareness campaigns and resisting any potential promotion of the Afrocentric theory, counter-arguing with factual evidence. The author of this paper is just one more Egyptian who is adding to the corpus of Anti-Afrocentric dialogue in an attempt to academically refute the Afrocentric allegations against the Egyptians as the rightful heirs to their ancestor’s legacy, highlighting the jeopardies of falsifying history for both, Sub-Saharan and Egyptian heritages, as well as the underlying malicious agendas fueling the Afrocentric racist discourse.

Data Collection/Analysis Methods
Since this research is focused on analyzing the misrepresentations of Ancient Egyptian heritage in pop-culture, particularly social media posts and media productions, the primary resources would be materials collected from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, as well as some media productions, like the abovementioned works. Also, less popular productions, like Anthony and Cleopatra which presented by The National Theatre of Britain in 2018 in which all the Egyptian character, including Cleopatra, were portrayed by black actors. Some secondary resources would include newspaper reports and social media conflicts. To illustrate, Netflix’s mini-series “Cleopatra” (2023) received its fair share of criticism until its genre was officially changed from ‘documentary’ to ‘fictionalized’ story, with some Egyptian lawyers suing Netflix for the falsification of history, while the mini-series received a terribly low rate on IMDB and other platforms. Meanwhile, Afrocentrics were reactive on social media, defending their beliefs and cheering for the latest Cleopatra, supporting their argument with nothing more than photos from their trips to Egypt, posing with the monuments, and writing captions that explicitly denote that they are “back home”, following the steps of famous celebrities who also do this. In another backlash, Egyptians started spreading cultural awareness about the Egyptian identity in an unprecedented enthusiasm to promote a stronger sense of identity and educate their social circles about the dangers of the Afrocentric beliefs and the importance of standing up for our culture on (social) media. All of these social media interactions can serve as a well of resources to study the phenomenon in question.
P.S. A random social media user once commented: "Egyptians can't have been black. They used black eyeliner and it was easy to see, unlike the actress who had to put a ton of golden glitter and blue outline for the outliner to be that visible!"

Check-In
Tumblr media
The key concepts in this week’s readings helped me see the complexities of web writing. I had never thought that user experience could be related to writing.
@npfannen
Is there a specific web writing definition for context? I couldn’t figure out a connotation it has for web writing that goes beyond the general definition of context.
Does multimodal content just mean it combines different forms of media? (ex: image + audio is multimodal)

Lecture 3 Notes - Semiotics
Semiotics - is a study of signs, and how they work to produce meanings, or the study of how things come to have significance.
Semantics - the study of meaning;
"the study of linguistic development by classifying and examining changes in meaning and form".
the meaning, or an interpretation of the meaning, of a word, sign, sentence, etc.
FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE (1857-1913)
French linguist who pioneered the semiotic study of language as a system of signs, organised in a study of signs written in ‘codes’ and ‘structures’.
‘STRUCTURALISM’
Key social structures that define, shape and influence our lives:
Religion
Family
Politics
Media
Semiotics in Action:
? - Question Mark
! - Exclamation Mark
;-) - Winky Face
Representation
Process by which cultural meaning is produced through signs and language.
System by which signs communicate = arbitrary
Arbitrary – arising from accident, rather than from rule; not bound by rules.
Meaning - Constructed by the system of representation
Colours have their own semiotics by Convention or Association
Ferdinand de Saussure
signifier and signified
Marking of differences in language produces meaning
Understanding signifier and signified.
How to interpret signs?
< Syntagmatic axis (links, chain-like) >
SUSHI - BAR
FISH - AND CHIP SHOP
SEAFOOD - RESTAURANT
^
Paradigmatic axis (the axis of choice)
v
Syntagmatic axis / Paradigmatic axis
The syntagmatic analysis describes the relationship of a visual text such as posters, photographs, or the setting of a film.
The paradigmatic axis looks at the way words are grouped together into categories.
CODES:
Codes are read partly by the expectations we have of conventions
Collections of signs in specific forms, (e.g.: language, writing, pictures, acting, graphic layout)
Are defined by their conventions, how they are used, and how the code hangs together.
Primary codes = writing, visuals, sound
Secondary codes = smaller codes within these systems: dress, body language (termed code of expression), visual colour, picture composition, lighting, mise-en-scène, written text, typeface etc.
THREE CATEGORIES OF CODES USED IN TEXTS
TECHNICAL: LIGHTING, CAMERA ANGLES, LENS USED, FRAMING, COMPOSITION, MATERIAL, CLAY, FIRING, MATERIAL,
SYMBOLIC: OBJECTS, SETTING, BODY LANGUAGE, CLOTHING, COLOUR, SHAPES
WRITTEN: HEADLINES, TEXT, CAPTIONS, SPEECH BUBBLES, STYLE, TYPEFACE.
THREE TYPES OF SIGN (CHARLES PEIRCE’S MODEL):
ICON: ICONS LOOK LIKE THE THING (PHOTOGRAPHS, TOILET SIGNS)
INDEX: INDEXICAL SIGNS INDICATE A FURTHER OR ADDITIONAL MEANING TO THE ONE ALREADY SIGNIFIED. (SMOKE = AN INDEX OF FIRE)
SYMBOL: THE SIGNIFIER DOES NOT RESEMBLE OR CAUSE THE SIGNIFIED BUT IS RELATED TO IT BY CONTRACT OR CONVENTION (E.G. ROSE REPRESENTS ROMANCE)
DENOTATION and CONNOTATION
Example;
Tumblr media
SIGNIFIER
Denotes - Moon
Connotes - Femininity, Intuition, mystery, change, cycles, the passage of time, Spiritualism.
Typefaces - Typefaces have their own semiotics
MULTIMODALITY: The combination of different semiotic modes – for example, language and music
Music and sound can be used semiotically or semiology
HOW MIGHT YOU USE SEMIOTICS?
Season/Lighting to depict mood
Character's clothing/appearance
The tone of music used
Setting - Where/When
