I'd like to share some information to people who enjoy emulating GBA games, especially on android. So here's the thing, I've been itchy to do online linking/multiplayer on GBA emulation, especially Pokemon games, and already spend quite some time to find both ways and people who are interested in it. Then I found an old thread in pokecommunity website saying this:
"Long story short, I have zero friends in real life, and I haven't been able to find a community for users of the GBA Emulator "MyBoy" to gather and link up. So, I figured I'd see if anyone here was interested. The purpose of this thread is to gather anyone interested in linking up on MyBoy and Trading or Battling on Gen 3. Post in here to find some partners willing to link up and have some fun :3."
Well that pretty much describes my intention almost perfectly. But that thread was years ago and already locked for comments. As far as I know, MyBoy has never be able to link you online with other people far away, at least not with the emulator alone. Simply put it can't. But there are other emulators, specifically on Android, that have their own/built-in online multiplayer for GBA games.
The main emulator I used to do online multiplayer is called Multigba S. I'm sure some or even many people here already heard about this emulator. Despite still not yet giving a really good experience in online multiplayer, I can say it's still the best way to do online multiplayer on GBA.
To simplify the reading, here's the main features of Multigba S that you need to know:
- Free/ No paywall features
- Offline/ Singleplayer mode
- LAN mode (for connecting 2 nearby devices to play multiplayer)
- Netplay/ Online Multiplayer mode (for connecting 2 devices via internet to play multiplayer, world wide, cross countries)
- Easy Netplay setup (just need to login via google, no IP address sharing)
- Build with mGBA core, the best and most compatible GBA emulator
- Player 2/guest doesn't need to have the ROM to join the host server
- Can connect 2 different games (Like Pokemon FireRed with Emerald)
- Build-in text chat when playing multiplayer
- Supports both hardware controllers and virtual/on-screen/touch based controller
- Capable to link the emulator from android to windows (with BlueStack)
Tumblr media
The image you see is the emulator's Public Server where people find each other and available servers online. I found most Multigba S users are Spanish(?) that play Pokemon Quetzal and barely see other people that speak English that play other GBA games. From what I read and experienced, the online multiplayer requires a pretty stable connection and high-end/flagship phone specifications from player 1/host side to get a smooth/stable gameplay. You can do the online multiplayer on low-end/budget phone, it works, but the disadvantage will be felt by player 2/guest as they'll likely get lags. But alas I can finally fulfill my Pokedex and play games like Zelda 4 Swords with foreigners. I have some more interesting GBA games with multiplayer mode that I can host, both vanilla GBA games and Pokemon romhacks like Unbound and some Emerald hacks.
There is also a Discord server to gather GBA players to find each other to play multiplayer online together, also for technical supports like save file transfer, multiplayer set up and such.

Since Nemona reminds me of myself when I was younger, my brain cooked up a Real World au where everyone just plays the pokemon game, so:
Nemona: Still student council president and a dork. She whips out her Nintendo every recess and goes up to everyone she knows and asks if they'll battle her. She's always happy when someone says yes.
Arven: Plays the game because someone told him he could make friends with others who did and fell in love with the picnic mechanics. He's good on those limited time event Tera raids and gladly assists you on gathering Herba Mystica.
Penny: Played the games since she was young, and is content playing through the story herself. She always buys both copies of the games to trade with herself and experiments with rom hacks. She probably made a few mods as well. Still, once she discovered multiplayer, it was hard to go back.
Carmine: Has to share a switch with Kieran, and hogs it for the first few days, with him watching over her shoulder. She got a little bored of the game, though. You can't exactly battle your sibling when you share a console. Got back into it just to check what exactly the heck Kieran got up to with his game. They also share an acnh island
Kieran: Has to share the switch with Carmine, and watched her play the game when she hogged it. When figuring out he couldn't play with his sister, he started playing with the competitive battle team that started up at his school. Then one day he tried playing against a competitive random who wiped the floor with him and then became determined to Get Good for real. He also got stuck taking care of his sister's acnh island

Luigi's Uncharacteristically Large and also maybe Haunted House (3DS Edition): A Highly Professional Review
The entire time I've had this blog, I haven't really been sure what to use it for. I've settled on spewing my unscripted thoughts on whatever Game of the Week I've played most recently because, quite frankly, where else are they gonna go? I love my girlfriend, but these words are destined for a wider platform. I must expand my horizons. So here I am, talking about cartoon ghosts and green vacuum-wielding Italian men on the internet.
Now, let me tell you, this green man and his stupid house have been in control of my entire brain like some fucked up Italian Ratatouille for at least 10 years. I was a Luigi's Mansion Kid. What do I mean by that? I mean I roleplayed Luigi's Mansion on the school playground when I was in the 3rd grade. With the other Luigi's Mansion Kids. So it's safe to say I have some experience when it comes to this game. At times, he goes dormant. He waits patiently for another hyperfixation to pass. However, just when I least expect it, he returns from the grave (almost like a ghost?) to stage a military occupation of my frontal lobe to last the next few months.
So, there's my history. I ended up finally picking up the 3DS version of this game just before the eShop shut down (rest in piss) for shits and giggles, and only just got around to playing it this week while laying in bed with a migraine. (maybe not the smartest decision?) I mean, to start with, why was this game released for the 3DS? It came out in October 2018, at which point we were already an entire year post-Switch. I mean, I guess it would be fine, but it's just so obvious that being on the 3DS holds this game back in so many different areas (which I will get to, be patient!) and it's seriously a tragedy it hasn't been ported to Switch yet. Why put together such an amazing remake, and then bottleneck it with lackluster hardware and release it on a nearly out of service console?
In terms of positive changes? LOADS of QoL stuff. I might even go as far as to call this the definitive version of the game in spite of the few drawbacks it does present. Some examples include:
Re-fighting portrait ghosts: NO MORE RESETS!!! (Ok still some resets for speedy spirits because there's no way in hell I'm staying in the blackout for longer than I have to but that's just part of The Experience)
You can go back to the Lab from the Mansion by exiting through the front door. Finally, Luigi has learned how to open doors!
The tougher post-game Hidden Mansion, originally exclusive to the PAL version, has finally been made available to us worthless money-grubbing Americans! (Minus the disorienting flipped rooms, which I found pretty disappointing but some people will probably celebrate.) You can even get platinum ghost portraits from the Hidden Mansion which I have yet to obtain all of because jesus christ it is not easy to defeat a ghost with 150 health in a single attempt.
And now, the ghostly elephant in the room: co-op. I did try it, with my little brother as my Gooigi guinea pig. It's...I mean...honestly, it's not great. If you want to play LM1 with a friend, I can honestly recommend a ROM hack of the GameCube original more than I can recommend Nintendo's official multiplayer, which is pretty lame. For one, nothing is scaled up difficulty-wise to account for the extra player, so most battles in the game become trivial with the addition of a second experienced player (not my little brother.) But secondly, and most importantly:
the LAG.
DEAR GOD THE LAG.
I can testify that our internet is fine. The internet is not the issue, and even if it were, it shouldn't take any more bandwidth to play this game than it takes for two 3DS systems that are within 3 feet of each other and 10 feet from a router to communicate with each other. Yet, the game did not once run at full speed on either screen the entire time we played. Additionally, my brother complained several times that he couldn't even move his character. Luigi's Mansion with two players SHOULD be a chaotic mess, but adding the piddly framerate on top of it makes the game nearly unplayable.
That being said, the co-op is a disappointment, but it was never necessary for the game to be a satisfying package overall, it's better than having nothing. Though, as is typical, the work of fans definitely triumphs over Nintendo's official product in this department.
Oh, and they still didn't fix the oversight which causes you to lose the second gold diamond if you die after collecting it because the game prompts you to save while it's still on the ground... No A-Rank for me, I guess.
Mm, yes, the controls, yeah, those exist. This is one of those spots where I feel this game could have easily benefitted from just being developed for the Switch. Instead of forcing a dual-stick game onto a dying handheld with a single circle pad, maybe we could've, like, released it for the dual-stick console/handheld that was already out and had a perfectly established user base? They tried to substitute the c-stick with the gray alien nipple- or uhh..."circle pad pro"...that comes pre-installed on the New Nintendo 3DS, but it does not work well. The nub just isn't responsive enough to substitute for an entire stick, and if you want it to be a real circle pad, you have to buy an external attachment. Not to mention the nub isn't even available on every 3DS model! So like, yeah, I understand they made an honest attempt to work around the controller issues, but a better workaround would've been to just...not curse this game to irrelevancy by trapping it on a dying console.
All of that said, I spent all week playing this game, so they did something right. Curse my brain worms.
11/10 will buy this game and its sequels again every time Nintendo re-releases them.

Super Mario Bros Wonder Direct Impressions
After having a day to digest the Super Mario Bros Wonder presentation I think I can properly give my two cents. I don't think I have been this excited for a 2D Mario game in a long time. It's quite insane really how many new ideas they have managed to cram in here. It practically makes New Super Mario Bros look like a prototype by comparison.
In terms of visuals, I seriously don't get where some people are coming from claiming Wonder still looks generic and bland. In what we have seen so far this game absolutely obliterates NSMB in terms of art direction and visual variety. There are also some neat twists on familiar Mario level themes. Fluff Puff Peaks looks like they went and combined the ice and sky worlds into one which is a much more interesting take on the usual Mario world tropes. You can really tell how they are embracing some of the inventive wackiness found in the recent 3D Mario titles.
The playable character roster on display here is just insane. We got the whole NSMB gang plus Peach, Daisy, Toadette 4 Yoshis, and even Nabbit. I know people will dump on Yoshi and Nabbit for basically being the "You Suck." mode but I think it's great to have them for less experienced players. There is just something very surreal about seeing Daisy fully playable in a Mario game that isn't a sports game, or a spin off. I hope this marks the start of Nintendo actually making her a genuine part of the core Mario cast going down the road.
The powerups my god the new powerups. Elephant Mario is such a neat twist on the usual animal costume power up Deviantart jokes aside. Bubble Mario I am surprised they didn't come up with sooner especially considering it was in a ROM hack beforehand and I love how they basically brought back the Spin Drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and translated it into 2D.
The Wonder Effects are a perfect way of keeping things fresh in the event people thought 2D Mario was getting too boring and predictable. I have a feeling we are only scratching the surface with what Nintendo has shown us.
The badge system feels like a natural extension of the 2D Mario formula. Nintendo has essentially taking the modern game design philosophy of allowing people to customize the game to suit their play style and applied it into 2D Mario. The speedrunning potential of some of these badges is likely gonna be nuts.
Okay I really didn't have Nintendo giving Super Mario Bros Wonder its own Dark Souls style multiplayer mode on my bingo card. Honestly, I think making online play more focused on assisting and helping other players rather than competitive co-op was a smart move given how much of a mess online co-op has been in previous Mario games that had it. I really get the sense the Mario dev team applied a lot of the lessons they learned with online multiplayer in previous Mario titles to create an experience that was better suited for 2D Mario.
After seeing everything new about Super Mario Bros Wonder I think I can see why Nintendo felt the need to give this game it's own dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation. This truly feels like the proper next generation of 2D Mario in ways the later New Super Mario Bros games never did.

hello! this may be a bit out of your reach, but have you had any experience in Wii U Virtual Console injection through Homebrew? The list of games compatible with Nintendo's builtin emulators VS ones that arent is still barely like 10% done, and Magical Vacation still hasnt been tested properly :(
Is this something you'd be interested in looking into further, to let people play the fan translation on a home console like Wii U?
Howdy! While I have next to no experience in homebrew console mods (especially on Wii U since I don't own one lol), it would be cool to see MV Fanslation 2.0 on there!
The Fanslation doc is still in development, though I have made quite a bit of progress as of late. Once it's released, I can see if any of my friends who have experience in ROM hacking can delve into Wii U homebrew injections!
The Wii U VC port of MV is pretty unique, in that you can instantly get dark magic by pressing Communication on the home screen, mainly to remedy its lack of multiplayer functionality.
At any rate, thanks for the idea, anon! If getting Fanslation 2.0 to work on a home console is in the realm of possibility, then I'd totally be up to the challenge.

Pokemon Thirst Trap - GBA Hacks
Download Pre-Patched Pokemon Thirst Trap GBA ROM Hack
Creator: Unfolding
Version: 2.0
Hack of:  FireRed
Released: November 24, 2024
Language: English
Status: Progressing
Pokemon Thirst Trap is a GBA ROM Hack by Unfolding based on Pokemon Fire Red in English. It was released on November 24, 2024, and is now available to download.
Sorry to disappoint, but it’s not that kind of thirst! (And not that kind of trap, either…)
Description
Hi, I’m Unfolding, and this is my second little romhaiku—a term I’ve coined to describe a short yet polished hack focusing on a single concept.
This hack is a silly, completely SFW story about refusing to pay for overpriced water in a terrible tourist trap! It was created for MAGM 7, with the theme of Tourist Trap, and tied for first place with Haven’s Escher Forest—which is an actual masterpiece.
Go play that one, then come back and enjoy this quirky adventure! 😊
Features
A borderline dystopian capitalist world laced with silly, sharp humor.
An obsession with originality – ensuring the hack feels fresh and unique.
A bizarre yet self-consistent premise that keeps you hooked.
Art galore: Paintings and sculptures that evoke deep emotions—and then question you about them.
A mystery that’s as fascinating as it is ridiculous.
The creeping anxiety of not having enough money to survive in a ruthless town.
A bonus boss who outright cheats (and revels in it).
Puzzles galore: obscure game mechanics alongside one incredible puzzle designed by a legendary puzzle maker.
A short but sweet experience: beatable in under 30 seconds for speedrunners, just like Accept Defeat, or about 2 hours for those savoring the absurdity and exploration.
Creator Note
It’s hard but not impossible to throw away money to the point where the game becomes unwinnable, so don’t do that, hahaha. There shouldn’t be much level grinding or anything that’s really tedious, but the bonus boss is pretty tough even with a great team. Feel free to play with save states!

I dunno why I have these
So at some point I went looking for DS roms & found two on the same site that confuse me
Tumblr media
One is called legacy(dunno why)
Tumblr media
Another is called independent(still dunno why & I'm not trying both out just to see if there's a difference)
I saw someone on reddit recommend a link to the rom with legacy in the title so guessing to go with that?
Tumblr media
Not that it matters cause I'm using the rom hack that turns the game into the WiiU virtual console version(context when Wild World was released as a virtual console version on the WiiU they removed the multiplayer requirements for unlocking stuff so literally all this does is remove the need for another player to come to your town to unlock stuff)

You're right that the Essentials community and the rom hacking community are pretty separate, because they're two very different methods of game design, and people typically stick with one or the other. But I always thought of rom hacking as being just another arm of the pokemon fangame community, an equally valid way to make your dreams a reality.
Each method has its own set of unique advantages that lend themselves better to certain kinds of game. Pokemon Essentials gives you the tools to easily make a whole new world from the outset, whereas rom hacking is great if you want to remix or add new content to the official games.
But rom hackers make full-fledged fangames too! It's the most common reason I see people get into rom hacking, because they want to make a game with their own original ideas. I started doing it because I wanted to make my fakemon playable, and that desire developed into creating a whole new region for them. There are lots of rom hacks set in fanmade worlds! Look at Pokemon Gaia, or Pokemon Unbound. They have totally original settings and stories, but they're still modified versions of Pokemon FireRed.
It's a real uphill battle to ship-of-theseus an official game into your own original game, but people do it for good reasons. There's no better way to make your game feel authentic than to have it use the same engine as official releases, and make it playable on hardware. Many rom hacks even retain their multiplayer functionality! (Finding a way to actually link up with another player presents its own challenges, though...)
Perhaps it's the extra challenge that makes rom hacking appealing to some developers. Any quality of life feature that an Essentials game has can also be implemented in a rom hack. With the source code at your fingertips, you can modify the game any way you want, as long as you work within the hardware limitations of the system it's made for. And rom hackers share resources with each other the same way software developers do. When someone develops a new feature, they can share the modifications they made as a public branch on github that anyone can pull from.
Anyway, that was my pitch on why rom hacking is cool. And if I get to choose the terminology, I would not count rom hackers as separate from the "fangame" community, they're just a different kind of fangame maker.
"This is the engine that literally every Pokemon fangame is made in"
*stares at you with my big sad wet rom hacker eyes*
LOL
Look, I love rom hacks. I have a collection of physical cartridges with rom hacks in them. Pokemon Essentials is just more accessible.
Honestly, I put rom hacks in a different category from fangames. Personally, a cooler category, though I wasn't gonna say that in the post. Pokemon Essentials has some quality of life stuff that most hacks don't have, such as faster battle animations, but emulators can speed up the game anyway so it tends to be a wash unless you're playing on a cart like me.
The things I've seen people do in hacks are inspiring though. The guy who made Emerald Slide (hack of Emerald where everything has ice physics) also made a hack that added a grappling hook mechanic to the game. He made both hacks just to encourage other people to get interested in hacking! And we can't forget Emerald Rogue which turns Pokemon into a roguelike.
If you want me to write pro-rom hack propaganda, I can. I find the charm of hacks generally greater than of Essentials fangames, in part because of the authenticity. The experience of playing Pokemon Snakewood on my GBA in hotel in another state? Unmatched. Took me right back to my childhood, but with the weird shit that Snakewood was doing to augment it.
But as far as I can tell, the fangame community and the romhacking community are, like, separate. There's overlap to be sure, but not as much as I expected.
Anyway, all that to say, I wrote the post to encourage the type of person who wanted to make a pokemon fangame but was too scared of romhacking.

Today I beat Conker's Bad Fur Day again.
A pretty big departure from Rare's other N64 mascot platformers, and anyone who cares already knows why that is. I still can't help but wonder what timeline is like when we got the kid friendly Twelve Tales Conker 64 instead. I feel like the crude humor in this game has aged it terribly, but maybe that's just me, I kind of grew out of the whole south park style shock humor by the mid 2000's.
That said, there's still some humor to get from the story, and Conker himself is charming when he's not squashing baby dinosaurs, the gameplay is still just fine, rough in a few spots. But pretty great for the most part. And I can play the multiplayer for hours, I just wish I had somebody to play with, those bastard AI cheat so hard with their insta-kill magnum snipers.
Anyhow. With that, I'm out of Rare platformers to play on N64, but I am also revisiting Mark Kurko's Jiggies of Time rom hack as well, and if I really want more, there's Yooka Laylee... but I think I want to stick to my N64 instead so maybe i'll play some of Rare's non platformers or even try something new. I'm also juggling some Bomberman as well.

Favorite Picked Men Rom Hack????
Oooo I'm not sure how well I can answer this, I've played so few and only one to completion. That being said, I think I've enjoyed PikHacker's Pikmin 2 multiplayer mod the most! Absolute chaotic fun with your friends, would highly recommend.
And for those curious, I've played the tutorial of 251 and some of Lands of Torture. 251 I'd like to beat some day, but after seeing what the wollywogs can do in Lands of Torture I think I'm good on not beating it <3 rn I'm most excited about Pikmin Squared/Pikmin^2, and I reallllly want to play Extra Side of Stories but I lack the means to
