thank god for indie devs making like tiny little maximum 10 megabyte freeware games on itchio keeping the art of filesize optimization alive. ASSET REUSE FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#im watching a video about wario land music -> 'the bizarre music and sound design of wario land 4' by geno7 #good video so far! i like this guys stuff. he talked a bit about how they did some of the sound effects for warios voice #a very like. chopped and remixed sample style of doing his vocal lines. which is very cool 1) because it saves a bit of #precious space on that gba cartridge BUT ALSO 2) it just sounds cool and interesting stylistically #and man sometimes trying to keep a file size down really does give way for some really interesting stuff #on my own personal interests in games i ADORE rpg makers rtp and how people can find creative uses for it #i love that a bunch of games can draw from the same asset pool as one install on ur computer #no bloating your hardrive with a bunch of copies of the same assets - its just already here!#and from a developers perspective i love when they reuse old assets from other games in new weird ways #some small visual novel companies will reuse backgrounds and other assets #altho i dont mind a bit of bloat with VNs since a big draw can be the big pretty images and big pretty sounds #but its still cool when people find ways to get creative with space saving. and from a players perspective its also nice #space is cheap nowadays. but its not Free. we can swallow terabytes whole with micro sds and everything #but a lot of players dont get the chance or ability to upgrade their internal memory that often. so i think being considerate of filesize i #very important. and thats not even getting into the download bandwidth limits - a lot of people all across north america can only get like #internet from 1 provider and that 1 provider often likes to upcharge and limit shit because they can #we might live in a future where a lot of powerful technology exists. but access to that tech is another story #so remember the filesize. remember the filesize.#dies in your arms

anyway yeah relevant to that post abt being deaf/hoh and ppl excluding u from conversation bc of it (even unintentionally), that's smth that's been really deeply bothering me lately bc there are a few ppl I routinely have to deal with who do it a lot and it Pisses Me The Fuck Off I've lost all patience w them. giving up and calling it ableism and walking out idc anymore 🚶‍♂️

New thesis idea: a critique of Barańczak's translation of the cats poems cuz he did not get the vibeTM at all, and I am annoyed by it

Or alternatively: how to translate light poetry right, a case study on Nowicki's translation of cats poems cuz he did get the vibeTM

#barańczak may be the king of poetry translation here and i generally like his work but i dislike his version of 'old possum's' so much #like literally the only thing he got going for him in this case is that he translated all of them while nowicki did only 9 #and i knew wyszogrodzki must have had at least a look at nowicki's version cuz he literally took tugger's name from him #although in the poem it's Ramtamtamek with no spaces XD #but now i think he may have had some more inspiration from it cuz just found a photo of nowicki's 'the naming of cats'#and there are some lines that are really close to what's in the show #i think barańczak was just too used to translating more serious stuff or smth cuz his version is just so stilted #and so unnecessary complicated #like bro i get it you wanted to flex but why come up with literally all new cat names and that rhyming pattern #the rhyming pattern here is definetly a choice and not a good one in my personal opinion #warsaw guy talks #cats the musical #cats warsaw

can't believe I just spent three hours watching a movie about masculine anxiety in the nuclear family model, told through cartoon alien tribes wearing Mãori tattoos

#I dont know man I just dont vibe with these films. they're so weird to me for some reason #it's the mix of heavyhanded metaphorizing from a convoluted white savior pov with just the most uninteresting possible stories told within #and what beefs me the most is how good the cinematic grammar and dramatic sense is. like the execution is so good #not just technically (which was also great) but also on the storytelling ABCs level. pretty close to perfect #the structural edit wonked it a bit and dialogue wasn't always up to snuff #but generally speaking storycraft was firing on all cylinders yet telling the most uninteresting possible story imaginable. weird movies #both of them honestly. just weird #can't gel with them at all. and I NEVER forgive these insane runtimes either #I am heretically opposed to 3hr slogs. especially for something as simple as this. i hate doing mental structural re-edits while watching #but with movies like this it is impossible not to. just weird man #and the whole environmentalist angle is like fine whatever but the aboriginal aliens are such a clunky plot device #very very weird and sketchy and the optics are just all over. not for me to semiotically call this out i guess but leaves a very strange #taste nevertheless #and again technically it's just an utter magic trick and almost transcendent at times. but that is all momentsry candy without #meaningful story holding it together. just a guy being a dad except they're cartoons in space and also indigenous and super heteronormative #so fucking weird. and man you could feel james horner's absence so keenly #no longer a musical rhythm guiding the edit. other way around now. always a loss when this happens imo #it just felt like such an american dad family dynamics in this opposing context of an alien tribe #they were five minutes away from having back of the van arguments. all the 'bros' were insufferable #and dont get me started on the fucking sequelbaiting. sigourney weaver and the general and the weird dreadlocks guy all were #essentially just setting up sequel hooks and that was so grating in a movie already so long. eugh #anyway that was my review thanks for reading #text

illumination would make a fucking great movie out of blowing up farewell my turnabout into a full runtime because:

- most illumination films have a higher bodycount than the average aa game

- literally everything about celeste and juan and adrian and matt, individually and as relationship units. people love touting these movies as not genuine but the adrian accomplice reveal would be so Good

- the soundtrack would fuck

- the Established Family Unit of nick maya and pearl disrupted violently by the plot. gjdhhshs illumination movies are pretty good at that kind of uncanny loneliness of being various degrees of alienated from your family for any reason and throwing this switch would be effective and terrible

- shelly de killer extra scenes that are just aai2 ice cream man

- nick kicking down those doors wouldnt be a joke actually. there's always marvel quips in these joke posts. they're fun movies but even when they're funny they arent so un-genuine.

- "what kind of jokes are--" matt pulls out his fucking burbon and when nick looks desperately at the guard the guy ducks, obviously having either given it to him or knowing it happens. The action is funny but the framing and audio cue make it clear that the cops not only know to an extent but Will Not Help You. he's only barely in prison. the guard has a large anime sweat drop as the shot re-focuses on nick staring into his own reflection in the glass instead.

- i dont think they'd shy away from this kind of visceral breakdown either? like. i think it'd be discretion cut away but the reunion scene between maya and nick and pearl is the next part and maya is like "what aboutt your record?" and nick goes "i won :)"

- credits scene dance party tribute to the jammin ninja which is a little bit tasteless but it's not worse than anything else that happens generally speaking. de killer is here.

CRUELTY is undercut by the jokes #(both when gru is not a good father and when a guy gets stranded on the moon with a limited air supply we arent considering)#but even when the movie is *funny* it isn't-- he goes to space in a pink space suit because his daughters did the Mixed Laundry gag.#and its thematic. because his dreams have been irrevocably impacted by his kids.#idk i guess i resent the idea that the movies doooont take themselves genuinely?#sing 1 isnt a particularly strong movie but the moment i think about is buster moon having to work car wash #which is what he talks about his dad doing: a job that's impossible to have dignity in because it's. literally dipping himself in soapwater #the fact that the people who come together to help buster get a musical number out of it isnt sing undercutting its emotional bit #but earned by the fact that everyone has decided to stand with him and help even though he's scammed them and lost everything.#sing 2 is better because it narrows its focus onto some of its stronger cast? rosita's Whole Thing going from being underappreciated-#- to being unable to perform and therefore ousted from the thing that is hers; backsliding into her position in the first movie-#- until she can successfully stand up for herself which is done WITHOUT crushing porscha who herself is constantly unseen !!!#it's a major emotional crutch of the movie. this culminates in the silly alien costume being redefined into like. outfit of Last Stand.#i dont know !!!! i think the movie is good. the plot of this movie is conning a gangster into thinking his favorite singer is back #and getting his favorite singer onstage before the mob kills them involves both the secretary driving 120mph to chop suey #and the movie having the viewer understand ruby calloway's illness and death by doing a simple hallway pan past several pictures of her-#- followed by her wheelchair collapsed and placed neatly into a closet half-open by the front door. this is never a joke.#clay calloway also shoots miss crawly off his property with a paintball gun. this is a joke. he does this in his grief. to not speak.#much less sing. guess what the other climactic moment of the movie is.#i dont know man theyre movies for kids and their moms and i get it but i Like Them and im more inclined to be generous to them than like #the superhero crap that the insincere quips actually come from #i think often abt the memeification of the lorax i guess? like.#rest in fucking peace the biggering rock ballad this movie was intended to have #but is how bad can i possibly be a *bad* song? more importantly: does it fail to illustrate its own point?#a little bit. mostly in the visuals. it goes somewhat viciously for the joke at the lorax's expense in ways that become... cheesy?#but a cheesy capitalist pop rock ballad thing that in itself is insincere asking insincere question after insincere question.#idk. im guy taking this too seriously i guess. but it does get me man.

#Almost 2 hours straight of Ikegai Shun's voice 😭😭#But oh my godddd they are incredible #When kids 'grow up' listening to only the best music and then *learn* from it 😭#2023.06.27 #(Also I finally when to LIQUIDROOM! 😭🙏)#(I'll post music when I get back to the US)#(I also when through all my posts all my drafts (on all my blogs) looking for what I wrote the last time I saw them but it looks like I #never posted it and deleted the draft. I first saw Yahyel that one time I went to midnight sonic in 2018 but I first saw Ikegai Shun earlie #that day performing glitch with soil and pimp sessions - on a beach - with his most beautiful voice. It blew me awayyyyyy 😭😭😭 I still am #Shocked to this day I'm still moved by how beautiful that experience was 😭🙏 Then later that night at midnight sonic I was exhausted at #Like 2 am and was looking for a place to sit down and I walked past the entrance to the area where yahyel was performing and it shocked me #It was INSANE O_O some of the most incredible music I had ever heard live 😭😭😭#I went in but I was so tired so I sat down at the back and started falling asleep but there music was so awazing 😭😭😭 there was a lot #of space so everyone was dancing and growing crazy and having an amazing time and I so wanted to join them but my body was giving out and #I kept falling asleep 😭😭😭 I was so sad 😥#And then Komu_i just suddenly walked on stage and was like 'Hi~ we have a new song coming out together next month so well play it now 💕'#And it was sooooo incredible 😭😭😭 (you can imaging my shock because I had been trying to stay up all night in order to #see Wednesday Campanella at like 4 am so I just could not believe she suddenly walked out on stage for this random artist's show I #had (literally) stumbled into 😭😭😭#Man that whole experience was just so amazing and it wasn't until a few weeks later that I realized the 'something something Shun' guy who #Performed with soil and pimp was the same person as the guy from yahyel 😭😭😭😭)#(and that's my yahyel story 😅 but I'll never forget how blown away I was the first time I heard them. THEY ARE INCREDIBLE.)
