Mutant AU Malec

(Think Marvel/X-Men, but we don't have to slavishly follow their world's canon)

Alec and his siblings are mutants and teachers/caretakers, overseeing the care and education of young mutants that go to their school. While times have softened the general public to mutants, there are still bigots and prejudice abound. So when the school has to move to a new city/or disctrict, Alec, Izzy and Jace decide to check out the neighborhood to find out if there are possible future hangout spots for the kids.

When they find the Pandemonium Cafe, they mostly just want a cup of coffee. But when one of the customers at a table across from them finds out they are mutants and demands from the cafe's staff to kick them out -(nothing the siblings aren't used to. They won't even hold a grudge against the cafe's staff, not their fault people are shitty), - the incredibly handsome and gorgeous and cute -(so Alec has eyes; he can appreciate another man's beauty, back off Izzy, I'm not asking him for a date right off the bat!!!) - waiter/barista/owner, takes the guy by his lapels, and drags him out. Then he apologizes to the three for the inconvenience and gives them free dessert for having had to endure the asshole.

The cafe becomes the obvious hangout place for the school, both the kids and teachers. And with the help of his students and collueges, Alec eventually even manages to ask Magnus out on that date.

TW: implications of suicide

April walked down the hallway, one of her arms wrapped around her little brother. What had happened when she was gone? How did everything get so out of control? April could hear distant voices getting louder as they approached the living room, and she didn't quite like the sound of it. A couple months ago, a little bit before the invasion, April had found out that Jace attended the same college. When she found out about Donnie and Kendra, she told him immediately and they both went back together. To April's disappointment, however, she walked into the living room to see Raph and him fighting, while Mikey sat in the corner and solemnly watched them both. She cleared her throat and the room went silent, the three of them snapped their heads around to look at her. She looked at Leo, still wrapped under her arm. She was hesitant to let go and scold the others, but it was already hard enough to get him out of Donnie's lab in the first place. Without looking back at her, Leo slipped out of April's grasp. Almost like way of saying, 'i'm fine, go ahead', and she turned her head back to the idiots in front of her. Raph and Jace shared the same guilty expression, never leaving her gaze. Meanwhile Mikey's expression softened as his eyes fell on Leo, a small smile spreading across his face.

"I-ugh..."

April took a deep breath, trying to find the right words.

"The last thing we need right now is fighting guys."

Jace crossed his arms, a bitter expression on his face. April glared at him, why couldn't he just be mature.

"Jace, maybe you should go say hi to your parents. Tell them what's going on, maybe cool down a bit?"

He gritted his teeth,

"I don't even know what's going on! April all you told me is that my sisters missing, and it's THESE guy's faults!"

"Hey! I didn't-"

"Your not the only one who had their family go missing! Our brothers missing too! It's not just Kendra!"

April looked at Raph, she almost thought she saw a vein popping out of his head.

"WELL MAYBE IF DIDN'T HANG OUT WITH YOUR FREAK BROTHER, NEITHER OF THEM WOULD BE KIDNAPPED RIGHT NOW! YOU EVER THINK OF THAT, GODZILLA!?"

"IT IS NOT DONNIE'S FAULT THEY GOT KIDNAPPED! DON'T YOU DARE BLAME HIM!"

"GUYS!"

April's voice was sharp and bitter, her hands curled into fists. She glared at Jace, pointing a finger at his chest.

"YOU! OUT! NOW! I WILL TALK TO YOU LATER BUT FOR RIGHT NOW LEAVE! GO HOME! DO SOMETHING! I DON'T CARE JUST GET OUT!"

Jayce looked scared and so did Raph, but April was to pissed about their petty arguing to care. Jace crossed his arms and left the room, leaving April to then turn to Raph. She took a shaky breath, she hadn't noticed it until now but her heart was pounding in her chest. She stood there staring at the ground, trying to compose herself.

"April...?"

She took a deep breath and unclenched her fists. April looked around to see her youngest brother looking at her with utmost concern. She walked over to Splinter's chair and sat down, putting a hand over her forehead.

"Where's Splints?"

Raph took a seat on the floor next to her, turning his head to meet her gaze.

"He's out talking with local yokai, also putting up some posters. He told us to stay here and wait for you and Jace."

She put her head back, staring at the ceiling, the room felt like it was spinning. It had taken her so long for everything to really process, and now it was all hitting her like a freight train.

"We're glad you're here April, we could use all the help we could get."

She looked up at Mikey, who was now seated in Raph's lap with Leo beside them.

"Guys... Of course I'd be here, I'm just sorry it took me so long. It wasn't easy for me to wait so long to get back home."

"Don't apologize April. You're here now, that's all that matters."

April looked over to watch Raph put an arm around Leo, to which he instantly reciprocated as he hugged his big spikey brother. A smile spread across her face as she saw Mikey join the hug as well. She felt a warm feeling in her chest at the sight of the fond moment the boys were sharing. But that warm feeling soon changed into a twisting knot as she was reminded of the other brother missing from this image, and she could tell everyone could feel it too. She couldn't help but sniffle a bit as those thoughts flooded her mind. Everyone had already spent so much energy worrying about Leo after the invasion. And in all sincerity, she didn't know if her family could take another brother going missing, for who knows how long. Leo, Raph, and Mikey looked up at her to see tears forming in her eyes.

"A-"

"April?"

April looked up, wiping her tears. She was shocked to see Leo, who hadn't spoken a word ever since they left the lab, crouching down in front of her with concern plastered on his face. He took one look at her teary eyes and pulled her into a hug. She could hear him start to sniffle too, she knew for sure that they wouldn't be able to take it. She just silently prayed they would find Donnie soon as she laid in Leo's arms. Because if they didn't, she didn't know who'd be next, and she had a nagging feeling that the second time wouldn't really be an accident. She looked Leo's blue mask tails before shutting her eyes shut and squeezing him a little tighter.

Sorry this update took a bit to come out, I've had some personal issues that i've had to deal with for the past couple days. Plus I was kind of struggling writing from April's pov. Anywho April's back in the gang! The real search begins!

I was talking to a fellow Kendratello shipper about how Kendra totally could’ve met the turtles as a kid since her and April knew each other as kids. And the idea of a child Kendra following lil April into the sewers is hilarious because she just appears out of nowhere to be a menace. Splinter doesn’t know how these children keep appearing in the sewers and why this particular one keeps bullying lil purple (although he does suspect she has a crush).

Still on this nonsense. The fact that Jace has been raised—groomed, even—by an immortal ocean goddess to be everything his partner[s] want & more but completely roadblocks at Sham. Not because she expects more of him. No, there is something deeply wrong with her, down to the core, and she literally doesn't care how anyone feels about it.

... what about the "secondary" or Supporting Cast? Jace and Emily come to mind, any non Main OCs that you think deserve a moment in the spotlight?

Talk Shop Tuesday

I definitely do think about the supporting cast when I write, both in terms of the story itself and simply for the sake of rounding out my main OCs with more connections - their friends and family are just as important to their stories, if not the story told in the fic, as anything else in their lives, so it's important to me to have those connections formed whether or not they show up often in the story itself.

And, by contrast, the lack of a defined friend or family circle is something that can be very telling, I think: Kestrel mentioning the family they were raised in but otherwise sticking with the social circle Warren brings them reflects how getting close to others doesn't come easily to them, while Warren's more outwardly-social nature means he brings in those connections for them. Other characters, like Jimmy and Vivienne and Eris, don't talk much about their family much at all because of how distanced they are from it, both temporally and emotionally.

But with that out of the way, let's talk about some of those supporting characters that do make significant appearances in the story!

Emília Mendoza and Jace Scott: you mentioned them because they really are important to WWFA? in a lot of ways, and that's true! Jace is Katherine's roommate, a trans man who's currently pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship. Emily is Venezuelan-American and met Katherine through their shared art school classes, and wants to go into commercial illustration in the future! They're more than just Katherine's best friends, they're her family while she's away from her blood family in Memphis, and they're her number one support system through any hard times she goes through. They support each other in a lot of ways, and Katherine wouldn't have made it through her struggles without them to help her.

Anna Fischer: Rae's best friend and roommate at the start of A Love Once New. She plays a similar role to Emily and Jace in WWFA?, the family-away-from-home that Rae can rely on through the tough times. She's the one who first brings Rae to the place where she meets Warren, and often acts as a sort of mediator or second perspective to a lot of the first act of the fic - halfway between Warren and Rae in a way, since she's both a mutant (Rae was human at the time) but is outside the fighting ring Warren was trapped in. From a literary perspective, she also reflects Rae's openminded personality, as she's a mutant who reflects Rae's irrational fears (being a telepath, when Rae has a phobia of having her mind affected) but is still one of the people Rae trusts most. I do wish I'd utilized her a bit more as the story went on, I did bring her back into the story later in the game too but I could have done more

Hope, Hazel, and Honesty Woodard: triplets, and Madison's adoptive sisters in Smoke and Mirrors. Hope has the ability to heal others by transferring their injuries among a group of people, Hazel can control plants, and Honesty can compel people to tell the truth. Madison encounters them shortly after leaving the X-Mansion, and they later become a firm part of her family. In the story, they reflect Madison's "tough shell/heart of gold" personality and how much love she really does have to offer, as well as providing a bit of closure: they each were separated from their parents as young teens, but Madison made sure that the girls didn't fall into isolation like she did.

Lita and Jules: Indigo's closest friends while on the Steadfast in Bolts and Blasters. Lita remains a friend and supporting character to the end of the story, though Jules is unfortunately lost due to a reconditioning session earlier in the piece. They're meant to be a reflection on how love and friendships can develop even in a hostile place, and they once again fill that role of the found-family and support system to Indigo.

This isn't anywhere close to all of them, and I could make a whole separate post about all the villains I've created for my stories, but this is getting long so I'll leave it here. You'll see that theme of the incredibly close, found-family type friendships in many of my stories, and that's because I care incredibly deeply about my own friends and I feel like a strong friendship can be an incredibly close bond for a character to have.

also with the other demigods for chb i'll probably just pluck out every other teenage/child character in canon, and maybe fill the ranks with some characters from other iterations. but sunita, kendra, jeremy, dale, jace, baxter, gentry, taylor, and casey (i might make her roman?) are all on the table! idk if this means romance but i'll probably yoink timothy mona and usagi, they're very common characters to grab for aus. for most of the mutants, they'll be monsters! some of them even taking up human jobs makes sense because of the mist
