Tony: I don't have favourites!

I might be the only one to say this but I'm tired of seeing bigger bones of monsters in my monster game. As in, I don't want to see the bones of ancient bigger monsters that supposedly lived long ago. I want that pre-meteor dinosaur world where everything was on a rise to get bigger. Stop chickening out and just give me the evolutionary rise of the continental kaiju!!!!

Good evening, Alain. For how long have you been practicing medicine?
Good evening to you too! I've been studying medicine for a little over 6 years now, and I've served as a medic on countless missions with the MVU :-) You're in good hands!!

It takes forty-eight weeks to leave Wisconsin.
Four nights, three days. It doesn’t seem like enough time with the boys, but it’s simultaneously too much with her family. As she packs her bag on the fourth and final night, she’s reminded exactly why she went long distance in the first place.
Except there’s no plan, this time. Nothing beyond drinking herself unconscious and smoking at least a decade off of her life. Maybe even a shower.
That was the first thing she did after the park. Strip off and stand under the piping hot water, letting it melt everything away. Washing away her sins.
She watched them swirl down the drain in a whirlpool of dirt, grime and dried blood. And she was stupid enough to believe that everything was out of sight, out of mind. It wasn’t true. Still isn’t true. The past always comes back to bite her in the ass - in the form of prehistoric monsters and present day ones, too.
For what it’s worth, though, it’s over. At least, for now.
There’s a sense of déjà vu that comes with that acknowledgement. She’s not stupid enough to believe it to be true, but she’s stupid enough to hope.
So, when Owen suggests they get the hell out of there, she agrees.
It reminds her of before. Reminds her of when she got discharged from the hospital. Not much has changed, since; she’s just as sick and he’s just as worried. But she’s not his problem anymore.
He made sure of that when he left.
They drive in silence. For someone who always has so much to say, Owen doesn’t talk. He wants to, though. Opening and closing his mouth, clenching his jaw in thought, trying to find the right words.
(It’s amazing just how much he can say without even speaking.)
He has questions. She just doesn’t have the answers he’s looking for.
It’s strange. They went from being…whatever the hell they were to strangers in a matter of weeks. A stranger who once knew her inside out, outside in - but now he looks at her like he doesn’t know who she is, anymore. Neither does she.
Halfway through the day, she offers to take over driving. They stop at the next gas station to fill the tank and stretch their legs, when Owen tosses her the keys and goes into the store to pick up a few things.
She finds herself grinning as she clambers into the driver’s side, turning the keys in the ignition and starting the engine.
She hasn’t driven since the day on the island, but it’s easy to let muscle memory take over and pull back out onto the road. By the time Owen settles next to her, they fall into an easy rhythm of sidewards glances and changing radio stations.
Until a deer almost runs into the van.
She reacts immediately. Physically and mentally. Foot slams on the brake to narrowly avoid hitting it, mind thrown back to racing in the MVU van as the raptors tried to get in.
Teeth, blood, screams.
Owen has to all but peel her hands off the steering wheel as she hyperventilates, calming her enough to get her out of the seat just in time to vomit.
She chokes on her spit. On her breath. On the memory.
His hand on her back is an anchor, brushing against her skin to keep her grounded. She’s briefly aware how her fingernails dig into his forearm; raptor claws of her own, talons slicing through flesh.
It must take an hour or so to get her back into the van.
Jittery and weary, she curls up in the passenger side. Owen promises they’ll stop for the rest of the day at the nearest motel.
He’s promised a lot of things, before, but there’s an earnestness to his words that she knows to mean the truth. Owen is many things, but he’s always to the point. Precise. Honest. Says what he means and does what he says.
He’s a better person than she could ever be.
So it comes to no surprise when he offers to get a room with two beds.
“I’m not leaving you again,” He vows.
So she leaves, instead.
Sneaks out of the motel. Slips past the receptionist asleep at the front desk. Flustered. Embarrassed.
It feels like a walk of shame. She’s had enough of them to know how it feels, how it goes; dishevelled and disorientated, stumbling down the road. It wouldn’t be the first. Hell, it wouldn’t even be the first with Owen. But it’s not. She’s walking away - ashamed - but this…this is on her.
Leaving isn’t easy, but it’s easier than staying. So, she treks the three and a half hours to the nearest town. Alone in the dark.
It’s nothing like it used to be on the island. A part of her is grateful for such, grateful that dinosaurs are no longer the biggest concern but man, instead. And, logically, that should probably scare her more.
She’s not scared, though.
No horror story of what happens to women like her could faze her. She, herself, had lived through worse. She, herself, is worse.
She’s a killer. Shouldn’t they be afraid of her, instead? Her.
Like everything, she makes it out alive. Somehow. Disappointment pulses through her veins, crawling under her skin. An itch that can’t be scratched. Some things never change, she supposes.
By forty-nine weeks, she’s back in California.
The year anniversary of the park lurks around the corner - like the T-Rex on her tail; looming behind her, a few feet from ending it all. It doesn’t feel like a year has gone by. Truthfully, it’s as though no time has passed at all.
She’s essentially where she was when she started.
Jobless. Homeless. Questioning her role in everything, her place in the world.
Except there’s no Owen, this time, no sticking together for survival. She’s not his problem anymore. She made sure of that when she left.
It’s ironic, almost. She did this to herself. She wrote this story. So, surely, she should know how it ends, right?
(She does. It starts and ends the same way. With her. With the end of her. Her.)
But it doesn’t stop. Neither does she.
It takes fifty-one weeks to find herself a new apartment. Cheaper than her old place, but still overpriced compared to what it’s worth. Still, beggars can’t be choosers. It’s decent enough. A nice, secure complex. Death threats and hate mail seem the least of her concerns, here.
The reminder of Christmas is inescapable, however. From the decorated fir in the courtyard to the flashing green and red fairy lights strung in her neighbour’s window, next to the Santa Stop Here sign.
Tinsel replaces teeth, blood, screams.
She’s walking to the store when she spots a news broadcast playing in the shop window of some electronics place. A global special on the downfall of Jurassic World, one year after the Isla Nublar disaster.
A grainy image of her holding the flare in front of Paddock 9 comes on screen. ‘Claire Dearing: Anti-Hero or Heroine?’
The image burns in the back of her mind. Inescapable. She can’t even blink away the forming tears without seeing the aftermath of Main Street. All the rubble and ruin. The few bodies scattered along - still and cold.
She had to step over someone on the way to the T-Rex paddock. A woman clutching a child’s sweater in her hands.
She doesn’t know the fate of the child. Was too scared to find out, to see if any of the names on the list of people she killed belonged to infants or adolescents. Either way, she took their mother away from them.
How could anyone think she’s a hero after that?
The next week or so is spent holed up in her apartment; not talking to anyone, not eating, not sleeping. With nothing but a plan to run herself to the ground. Preferably six feet under. It’s all she’s got to work with, and she’s all she has to blame.
She’s vaguely aware which day is Christmas, when it passes. Everything is somehow quieter and busier, all at once.
It reminds her of Christmases at the park.
There, too, she spent the holidays alone.
Except for last year. She and Owen, still recovering, spent the first two weeks practically restrained to their hotel room. So different to all the holiday seasons, before, but somehow possibly the best she had. And admitting that just reminds her how pathetic it is. How pathetic she is.
The thought sends her spiralling; slipping on her sneakers and doing what she does best. Run.
She only stops when she physically can’t keep going. Limbs numb, lungs deprived of all air. Hunched over herself to try and keep from collapsing.
She uncurled herself to spot a billboard across the street. A tiger staring right through her.
I didn’t ask to be born. I didn’t ask to disappear, either.
Staring, she’s frozen in place. The billboard next to it is easily recognisable as a gyrosphere poster, albeit fading in places and peeled away in the corners. Triceratops centre-left.
Jurassic World was meant to teach people about the past, show them the wonders of science and how small they all were in the grand scheme of things. It wasn’t something to be capitalised on. No, it was about a better future for the kids of today and the children of tomorrow. That was Hammond and Lockwood’s dream - bringing imagination to life for generations to come.
She believed the same, once. But, somewhere down the line, she forgot what it meant.
Mistakes were made. Consequences were paid.
There’s no going back from that. She can go forwards, though. She can do better and be better, ensuring that nobody makes the same mistakes as her. That…that’s feasible, right?
It takes sixty weeks to come up with a solid plan. The Dinosaur Protection Group - DPG for short - the foundation of the future. She can save them.
(Perhaps, she can save herself, too.)
