some tidbits

- i have been thinking of making something like this for weeks now. Joel mentioned anime intro and i had to lock in

- Before actually working on anything though, I had to think what was the genre I wanted for this opening. I tried to emulate the silliness and comedic nature of Joel’s editing while also capturing the beautiful Japanese Cyberpunk base he has. So I settled on a Slice of Life Shoujo-esque comedy anime! With the cherry blossoms as well, it felt very fitting. (I also thought of making it very vfx heavy to accent the cyberpunk-ness? But thats too much for 3am dan.)

- afterwards, i tried to choose a slice of life opening that led many songs into the download files! Openings from Horimiya, Kimi no Todoke, Your Lie in April, Ouran High School Host Club, Skip and Loafer, Dungeon Meshi (OP2) Bocchi the Rock and Saiki K were in the discussion room (aka, my brain)

- While editing, I kept certain office life animes in mind like ‘My New Boss is Goofy,’ ‘Wotakoi,’ ‘A Sign of Affection,’ ‘Cherry Magic,’ and ‘Uramichi Onii-san’ so I could focus on that ‘Shoujo’ and ‘Work-life Balance’ themes in the video.

- I actually did not edit this in my usual program! Instead of working on my PC (After Effects CC 2019) I worked on this with my phone on CapCut. It is currently 3am I really could not be bothered to get up and edit on my PC.

- I screenrecorded all of these clips, solely because I didn’t want to download all 31 episodes

Ralph Macchio’s Dancing with the Stars performances, ranked (by level of cringe)

so, as many of you can undoubtedly surmise, i have spent much of the last ten days looking at ralph’s DWTS performances. and looking at them again, and again, until all the ability to experience cringe left my body, possibly forever.

anyways, i’ve got opinions to share, so here it is: a list of all of ralph macchio & karina smirnoff’s DWTS performances (or, at least all the ones i could get my hands on), ranked subjectively from least to most cringe. (please note that these scores are relative, and that i know absolutely nothing about professional dance)

11. Rumba (to ”Stay Gold”) Official Score: 21 (7,7,7) Cringe Score: low

okay, if there’s one performance that i will legitimately go to bat for, it’s definitely stay gold (yep, from the outsiders). and yeah the scores weren’t that high but the judges just don’t appreciate the sweetness of ralph performing this dance to his wedding song (!) in front of his wife for their anniversary. he does a good job! he goes to kneel down in front of phyllis at the end! it’s cute! also, this dance is the originator of the iconic “this is my sexy face, it’s worked for my wife for 24 years” line. if you wanna check out one dance but your cringe threshold is low, make it this one!

10. Foxtrot (to “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head?”) Official Score: 24 (8,8,8) Cringe Score: low-ish

yes, ralph danced to this song long before it was used on ck, lmao. there’s some pretty silly step dancing in there but overall it’s a very cute performance and i like it.

9. Quickstep (to “Pencil Full Of Lead”) Official Score: 36 (10,9,8,9) Cringe Score: low-ish

there’s nothing all that offensive here except i find the quickstep a little boring and the beginning and end are kinda silly. also i have a personal vendetta against this number because the only acceptable-quality youtube upload i found is a terrible screenrecording that has so many framerate issues it’s almost painful to watch. and then, just after i posted my vid i found out they repeated the dance in the finale with a ralph solo that i neglected to use. anyways... it’s a fun little dance! ralphie sure does some quick stepping.

8. Waltz (to “Romeo and Juliet”) Official Score: 25 (8,8,9) Cringe Score: acceptable

it’s a good waltz and karina looks absolutely banging in that dress. the cringe parts are mostly the beginning and end which are just very dramatique, and the overall self-seriousness of it all, but that’s what the dance requires, so yknow. it’s nice to look at!

7. Argentine Tango (to “Violentango”) Official Score: 25 (8,9,8) Cringe Score: what’s that on your face, ralph??

i mean, look... it’s a tango, so this requires ralph to try and do some very serious sexy-face acting, which is... not his strength maybe. the dance itself is very good though. also, i have no idea what is going on with his stubble in this but it looks painted on and weird, lmao. but hey, there’s nice leg action!

6. Cha-cha-cha (to “Stuck in the Middle With You”) Official Score: 21 (7,7,7) Cringe Score: medium

y’all... this performance starts with ralph pretending that he hurt his knee and karina doing the miyagi healing trick on him. i am not kidding. (it’s kinda cute tho.) the dance is... fine. silly and cringey but not lethal just yet. ralph twirls karina around so much it makes my head spin.

5. Jive (to “Nobody But Me”) Official Score: 21 (7,7,7) Cringe Score: medium

okay, so the air guitar intro alone puts this on the cringe side of the list, but, listen. i have to admit this: it’s probably my favorite performance. ralphie is so fucking high energy in this it just wins me over. he wears a glittery suit and pink tie! i also feel like this is the one where he gets to dance the most and not just twirl karina around. once again the judges are wrong and should have scored it higher. it’s fun, damn it! macchio energy off the charts.

4. Viennese Waltz (to “Maybe I, Maybe You”) Official Score: 25 (8,8,9) Cringe Score: high

okay, so there are definitely some nice bits in here, but my god, that ending with the dramatic zoom still makes me break down laughing after seeing it roughly 200 times. i also don’t super love the floaty dance style. like, i’m sure it’s technically proficient and all but it looks kinda silly. sorry, ralph!

3. Paso Doble (to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”) Official Score: 24 (8,8,8) Cringe Score: transcendent

GOSH. you know how i said that if you wanna check out one dance and your cringe treshold is low, you should pick the rumba? if you wanna check out one dance and your cringe treshold is high, then please, for the love of god, watch this one. because what the fuck is even happening. watching this makes me feel like i’m losing my mind. they dance with miyagi-do moves and then high five. incredible. ralph, you are the reigning champion of cringe and i for one salute you.

2. Samba (to “Sweet Home Alabama”) Official Score: 22 (8,7,7) Cringe Score: lethal

dear LORD if i never have to see Yeehaw!Ralph again, it’ll be too soon. a line dance samba? ralph, why??

“Vince’s Gossip Corner: gossiping about the band addition!”

Vince’s room for the most part is dark, bar the pink LED lights he always uses. The man of the hour is off camera, rummaging around for a couple of things. There’s already a flood of comments coming in. It’s clear they’re all excited for another edition of Vince’s well beloved livestreams. It had been a month since Vince got himself a twitch account. The rest of the band had been pestering him to make an account.

Apparently they couldn’t call themselves the “emo hype house” if one of the members didn’t have a twitch or youtube channel. It didn’t really make much sense to him, but just to appease the guys (and get them off his back a bit) he made one. He didn’t know what to do at first, he wasn’t as good at playing video games like Mick was, and he didn’t want to just react to videos like Nikki and Tommy did. Some of the fans simply suggested he do whatever interested him. There were only two things that interested Vince: makeup and gossip.

So here he was now, combining the two in a segment he liked to call “Vince’s Gossip Corner.” He only ever streamed on Thursdays, probably because that was the only time he wasn’t busy doing other cooler things. Vince walked into the camera view, holding a bunch of makeup products in his arms. He smiled at the camera and sat down.

“Welcome losers! We’re back again for another edition of Gossip Corner! We have a lot to talk about, but before we get into that, I’d like to show you the look we’re going to be attempting today.” He greeted the audience, right before shoving his phone into the camera.

After a minute of trying to focus on his phone, a picture appeared clear as day. It was a closeup of a 1920’s film star in glam makeup. The comments erupted with skepticism, everyone was sure Vince wouldn’t be able to pull off the look.

“Ok I know this looks a bit complicated, but i could totally do it! Let’s be a bit more positive in the chat please.”

Throwing on a headband to get his bangs out of the way, Vince started by priming his face. Occasionally, in order to keep his fans engaged, he’d read out comments and answer questions.

“‘What’s Nikki doing today?’ ummm…I’m not sure…I think he said something about washing Mick’s hair on stream later today? I have no idea why though, I’ll probably pop into his stream later and see.” He answered a viewers question. It only fuels silly comments about those two.

“Guys wow, you gotta stop this!” He says in between giggles. “You guys are so weird!” He referred to a nikkimick shippers comments.

“Ok, ok, anyways…today I wanted to just be silly and gossip a bit with you guys, but this time I wanna talk about the band! I never talk about them on my streams, and I think they think they’re safe…well they aren’t!” He announced, bringing the attention back to the topic at hand.

“They’ve been real moronic lately I’m not gonna lie to you guys…who here say Mick’s last stream? He literally fell asleep on camera! It was so funny, I’m so happy I saw it live this time.”

micksgf: dude that was so funny! i literally gifted five subs to see if my message could wake him up and nothing happened!

yoongles: wait is he doing another moldy stream this week? i always miss it! :(

guitarhxro: i’m going to ask him to play guitar when he’s like that and see what happens!

fivealive: omg i was there!! didn’t nikki have to call him just to wake him up? that was gold!

“Guys no but like I hate when he does those streams…cause I’m never there to see them! I literally always miss them and I keep telling Tommy to record a stream for me and he never does!” Vince whined as he dabbed some foundation on his face. The shade was noticeably too light for his complexion. Nobody said anything.

“These jerks don’t even think about me! Like I wanna watch those streams and I get nothing. He’s so hilarious when he’s like that though, you guys should see what he does off camera!” Vince continued, throwing in a little tease to the fans, who reacted appropriately.

Vince laughed as he read the comments. He was so amused by all the people badmouthing Vanity. He wondered if they knew none of them ever had a chance with Nikki in the first place.

“EWWW MICKS GIRLFRIEND WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT?!” Vince erupted in laughter at the comment. He screenshot the comment to show Mick later on.

He took a chance at quickly glancing at the viewfinder. He gasped at what he saw. He was pure white.

“Guys seriously? Why did no one tell me i look like a damn ghost in here?” he exclaimed, trying to blend everything out. obviously he was still pale white. He wondered if this shade would match Mick’s skin tone. He made a mental note to try it out on him tomorrow.

Meanwhile the comments were still reeling from his previous revelation.

The reactions were eye roll worthy, but Vince simply went back to dabbing concealer under his eyes and over any blemishes.

“Anyways… oh guys did you know one of Tommy’s girls got him a dirt bike? It’s literally outside our house right now and i wanna ride it so bad. I’m waiting for Tommy to leave so I can take it out for a spin. Literally I’m so jealous, my girl never gets me anything.” Vince lamented.

“nuh uh mods ban that ho! No one makes jokes about stealing my girl in front of me! Evil behaviour…didn’t your parents ever teach ya some manners? Vince tried hard to stifle a laugh as he moved on to contour. He wasn’t really sure what he should contour since the girl in the photo didn’t seem to have any on. With a shrug, he simply put it where he always did, his nose and cheekbones. Before he could say anything else, his phone rang. Looking down, he laughed as soon as he saw the contact name.

“Guys wait, it’s Mick! I’m putting him on speaker.”

Holding the phone up to his mic, he answered it.

Vince: “What up?”

Mick: Hey man…uhhh, I think I lost my keys, can you open the door?”

Mick sounded just a bit wasted, which only amused Vince more.

Vince: “Where were you?”

Mick: “Nunya, now open the door dipshit!”

Vince: Hey you’re on speaker, be nice!”

Mick: “I’m what? Are you doing a stream?”

Vince: “Yep!”

Mick: “Oh cool.”

Mick raised his voice so the audience could hear him clearly.

Mick: “Hey, uh, if anyones getting bored by this fruity ass livestream I’m doing a stream myself soon so come over to my channel: 1313mars if you want to see me…do something I guess, I don’t know.”

Vince pulled the phone away from the mic a bit.

Vince: “Dude stop plugging your shit on my channel!”

Mick: “Can you just hurry up and get your ass over here, I’m cold as hell out here.”

Vince: “Don’t you have a jacket?”

Mick: “I didn’t bring it cause i thought it wasn’t gonna be cold.”

Vince: “Were you at Jack’s place again?”

Mick: “Yeah…I- wait I’m not trying to have a conversation with you right now, I need you to open. the. door!”

“I would…but i’m busy! Ask Nikki!” Vince cheerfully replied. He could hear Mick start to curse him out but quickly hung up on him before a word could be made out. The last thing he needed was a channel violation notice.

“I’m telling you guys from now, if he starts a Moldy Stream tonight i’m ditching you guys.” Vince announced.

Before he could answer, a notification popped up on Vince’s phone.

“New Notification: 1313mars started a livestream “vimce niel neds to jmp of a brdge!1!1!”

Vince squinted at the notification and grinned. His viewer count was slowly going down as everyone moved onto the “better” stream of the night. He looked up at the camera.

“Sorry losers I suddenly have something better to do now, I gotta go, but I’ll be back next Thursday…on the dot. Oh, and Mick I know you ain’t watching but I’m going to destroy you…just you wait.”

I was tagged to show my process for my Episode 17 Post which somehow got relatively popular, in comparison to the rest at least, so I’m glad to share the behind the scenes of that post in particular. This is going to be a long ride so buckle up friends.  ∑(O_O;)

1. Planning

First of all I have to rewatch the whole entire episode before I can even start on anything. So I usually sit down with pen and paper in hand and ready to pause at any given moment that sparks interest. In case there is a quote that sounds fancy enough to represent the episode I write it down, or when I see a scene or just a certain shot that catches my eyes I screenrecord that certain scene and save it in a folder for that specific episode. Over time I accumulate scenes here and there so I already form a rough idea in my head which scenes would look good together or would make sense together. Sadly this also sometimes leads me to have very few scenes because nothing really inspired me, or I end up with only one quote that I wasn’t even too sure about, but I just make the best out of it. So I basically let the episode itself be the whole drive and inspiration for my edit but I also try to not give away too much in terms of spoilers. So if you were to see it with the knowledge of what’s going on it’s supposed to be hitting a nerve, evoke a memory, or at least make sense, especially given in combination with the quote, but if you were to see this set without the knowledge of what’s happening I’d still like it to be interesting enough without giving away too much of the story. Do I even make sense, mayhaps.

This is usually what I end up with in my folder, sometimes I have about 20 scenes, sometimes 3, so for episode 17 this was a decent amount to work with! [Also please don’t ask why I name the clips like that, they made sense to me in that moment and it works somehow. And yes Wen Qing is the queen and there is nothing to stop her   (ﾒ` ﾛ ´)  ] Now it’s time to look through the scenes again that I clipped out and begin with the actual gif making. I use Avisynth to rezise all the gifs to either the smaller squares, the “full” square or sometimes the longer rectangle - honestly I usually do these very much based on what I think would look good in my head and just decide based on that, so sometimes I end up making the same gif again just in a different size because I felt it was lacking impact or ended up looking better in another set. Sometimes I end up not using gifs I made at all  ┐( ˘_˘ )┌

2. Creating

Now that I have this huge mess of endless gifs and pretty scenes that would work as a background loaded in my Photoshop I start to assemble. Given the fact that I always use the same 540x540 format at least the step of building a base is uncomplicated.  The first part of the set I made was the lotus lake scene. The moments that were catching my eyes the most were mainly the close ups of the actual plant. Detailed close ups make my heart go boom boom. So I figured they would pair well with a scene where all three of the siblings were in screen to convey this mood of like ‘happy yunmeng trio being silly in lotus pier yay’, especially given the fact that it’s a fond memory of Wei Wuxian in this oh so painful episode.

So I have the base grid I always work with, the gif of our three beloved plus the two lotus close ups. From here on it’s just very trial and error where the still pictures fit best over the gif and I just tweak around for so long until it looks good. Once I am done with the positioning of everything I slap my watermark on it and my default colouring for these sets. Of course the default coloring action I made never works the way I want it to so I end up messing around with it for half an eternity to make all the different colours work together and look coherent which sometimes leads me to colour one single part individually and adding more filters to the background and what not. This is how it looked like in this particular edit ~

For the other two edits I basically repeated the same process just slightly adjusted to whichever format I use [this is already way longer than needed]. When I make the edits with four gifs in the middle I always have to shorten the gifs beforehand so they have the same amount of frames in order to make the whole thing work to begin with. Usually gifs with the same colour palette or same theme work well together so in this case the food and hands stood out to me [hands always do, always]. So I found the perfect set of gifs to work with that and just added a scene of Wei Wuxian in the background as he fell asleep studying the scripts and Wen Qing came to bring him food, since this is a big part of the episode.

Of course we slap on all the fancy stuff on top afterward and tadaa - it’s a gifset. At last I had the scene of Wen Qing turning her head slightly and I knew from the beginning that I needed to have that scene as a “full” gif as I was just struck with love. I had so many different things I put on top like frames and flowers or tried to put the gif in a certain shape - whatever, it just looked kinda bad - until I found this dragon png and finally had an epiphany. I must confess i didn’t mask out the dragon perfectly to fit behind her but I reached a point of desperation as my creativity of the day left me behind struggling.

3. Posting

Once I am done with all three edits, sometimes only two depending on the amount of clips I saved, I arrange them in Tumblr and check how they look best. This thing alone can take me forever unless I have a set that has a coherent background throughout all of the individual edits so I don’t need to worry about in what order to arrange them. But once I finally decided on that I go back to my notes of quotes and try to decide which one works best in regard to the criteria I mentioned above. In this set the angsty Jiang Cheng had the honor. For finishing touches I add the link to my other episode sets and all the tags to keep things organized and usually ramble a bit about the process or my feelings. That’s what tags are for, right? 

Oof so yeah, that’s it. This turned out way longer than anticipated and I already edited this down...whoops.

Photoshop Help

Hi guys! I would really appreciate if anyone had some photoshop advice/help for me. Lately when I’ve been making gifs I’ve been having trouble with the quality of my gifs. In the PS workspace my gif will look totally normal, like this:

But when I go to export it via save for web it comes out looking super pixely. Sometimes even this bad:

I have only been having this problem recently which is strange because I haven’t changed anything about the way I gif, screenrecord, color, export etc., as far as I know. It sometimes gets better if I reduce the saturation/change the coloring but it really limits my ability to gif. I’ve tried doing my own research but haven’t found anything. I could be making a silly mistake as I’m not very tech savvy. If anyone has any advice at all on how to fix this or knows tutorials on how to make your gifs less pixely I would really really really appreciate it. I love making me gifs but this issue has nearly driven me away from giffing.
