For those who haven't been following along, I've been having a nice time doing experimental archaeology and recreating cosmetics/household goods that are historically plausible for local idiot pirate Stede Bonnet to have had around.

So far we've had successful lip balm, yet-to-be-completed Oil of Lavender, the terrible tragedies that have so far befallen the pearl face cream, and, finally, the unending journey of the one household item actually mentioned on the dang show: the lavender soap (with updates 1-3 and several mini-updates).
Did this all secretly derive from my researching period-appropriate medical horror? Yes. Am I still going to write about it? Of course come on now I can't just keep that enema information to myself--
But TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY.

Nope, today we're on the next iteration of the lavender soap, because we're still at the "fuck around and find out" portion of this experimental process-- and so, behold:
Version 3.0 7 oz. dried soap 4 oz. ground orrisroot 1 oz. ground whole cloves 1 oz. ground benjamin 10 drops lavender essential oil oil of lavender, q.s. rosewater, q.s.
You may notice that I have, tragically, only added enough of anything lavenderish to allow myself the honesty of still calling this "lavender" soap -- as previously discussed, lavender essential oils (as we know them today) were not really a Thing, and the Oil of Lavender (...which is not an essential oil, but rather an infusion of lavender flowers and olive oil) is not quite ready for primetime scent vibes, so I genuinely don't think these are comparable to actually just grinding up and shoving in the dried flowers.
But for the sake of Science, I needed to find out if removing the flowers would help with the browning issue of previous versions, so-- out went the lavender. For now.

Other changes in this version are:
store-bought ground orrisroot (...listen, Thomas is but a wee lad, and not yet hearty enough to wreck regular orrisroot as hard as it needs);
store-bought ground benzoin (because it was cheaper to buy in bulk that the solid resin from the woo-woo shop);
increased the amount of orrisroot from 1 ounce to 4 ounces, in keeping with some other recipes, to try and bulk up the myristic acid content (i.e., the thing wot makes olive-oil based Nabulsi soap actually produce a bubbly lather)
I should at this point say that typically the scientific process recommends making only one change at a time when conducting Experiments, so that one may know what exactly affected a change in a positive, negative, or neutral manner.
Consider, however, that I have no patience. So fuck it, we ball.

I should note that rather than grinding the cloves in my granite mortar and pestle first, I put them straight into Thomas's maw-- I don't know if that led to how intensely clove-oily these grounds are, or the fact that the lavender flowers were not present to soak it up. Previously I got a grey-green powder out of grinding the both together, so this rich, wet clove-color did not bode well for my "can I stop this from being brown?" soap plans...

As a note, I had to actually use a whisk at this point rather than just rely on my pestle to do the work -- my mortar is Too Small for these shenanigans, and the four ounces' worth of orrisroot did not help matters. I won't say how much of this mix ended up outside the mortar and on my clothes, but it was... it was a non-zero amount.
Whatever, thought I. This is Science. This is me experiencing the divine art of creation across space-time with my alchemical forebears, and also this is why I should not be allowed in other people's kitchens.
Notably, the upped powder content meant that I had to add a lot more splashes of rosewater to get to a dough-y state where the soap could be hand-rolled, and I had to work significantly longer with the pestle-- while version 2.0 was, per my notes, about 8-10 minutes' worth of work, I would call this a solid 20 minutes at least of beating the ever-loving shit outta this mix until everything was incorporated.

As you can see, the soap mix does form up very nicely, though it still requires a spatula to clear the sides of the mortar and pestle.
At this point, remembering that the last time I hand-rolled wash balls my palms came away Very Brown, I donned some latex gloves before I commenced my rolling. However, because (and again, I cannot stress this enough) I lack patience, I threw in another change: rather than leaving them as balls, I squished them slightly between my palms to flatten them into slightly more traditional soap shapes.

A note regarding the scent: Whether it's the relative lack of the lavender, or the big bump to the orrisroot (or some magic alchemical combination of the two), the soaps, while still smelling strongly like spice cookies, now have an oddly-unfamiliar-but-fascinating scent profile, similar to what I found happened when I made the lip pomatum. There's no good reason why this should make me believe that I've come closer to a "real" recipe, but the feeling is there nonetheless -- and it's definitely interesting.
Finally, and because the flat sides of these soaps looked too innocent, too pure, I decided to try that octopus stamp again. For future reference, stamping immediately after making these? Not a great idea. The soap stuck to the stamp like a motherfucker, and so a lot of detail was lost. But regardless--

This sunscreen contains 50 grams (1.76 oz) and is fragrance-free.

The sunscreen does have a similar appearance to mineral sunscreens at first look. It's thick but not overwhelmingly so.

It does however blend out like a moisturizer and I didn't notice any streakiness. It does have a very sunscreen-y scent but it doesn't stick around for long.

It's extremely hydrating and moisturizing, it plumps the skin and doesn't feel super tacky or look greasy.

It does brighten some under flash, but it's not a major problem as it's a chemical sunscreen, if you have medium to dark skin, probably avoid this one.

It sits extremely well under makeup and it's a very hydrating base, I'd say you could skip other moisturizers and just use this or you have very very dry skin.
Recommended use is to apply the cream over the face at the last step of your daily skincare. This sunscreen is cruelty-free, pH-balanced, and free of artificial coloring, fragrances, and ethanol and vegan. After using, so to note this does have kind of a typical sunscreen scent but it's not overwhelming and does dissipate pretty quickly; in addition to that, there are no notable irritants in the ingredients. The sunscreen sits nicely on the skin and doesn't pill or bunch up under makeup. It absorbs into the skin and is very hydrating, I think this makes a great moisturizer on its own. I did find this would irritate my eyes, however, so I had to be cautious about that. This also is pretty light so it could or could not be an issue on tan to dark skin. This sunscreen comes with a pump dispenser, the only nitpick I guess that I have is that I prefer to do the 2 finger method and it's usually easier to do with a squeeze tube. It also is not a great option for throwing in a bag as it's not the smallest container. I'd recommend this to anyone really, I find that it's gentle and moisturizing.
What I like: I enjoyed how hydrating and moisturizing this product is. It's great under makeup and it absorbs very nicely. It's very gentle and free of fragrance and irritants. What I don't like: I have no issues with this.

Steatotic liver disease (SLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which includes a range of conditions caused by fat build-up in the liver due to abnormal lipid metabolism, affects about 25% of the population worldwide, making it the most common liver disorder.
Often referred to as “silent liver disease,” SLD progresses without noticeable symptoms and can lead to more severe conditions like cirrhosis (liver scarring) and liver cancer.
A liver biopsy―an invasive procedure involving liver tissue sample extraction from the body―is the conventional method of testing for SLD. To simplify detection, a research team led by Professor Kohei Soga of Tokyo University of Science (TUS) had previously introduced near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) as a non-invasive method to visualize the total lipid content in the liver.
NIR light, with longer wavelengths (800-2500 nm) than ultraviolet and visible light shows absorption attributed to various organic substances, including biomolecules in tissues, enabling the identification of fat distribution in the liver.
Now, in a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, the research team, including Prof. Kohei Soga, Associate Professor Masakazu Umezawa, and Associate Professor Masao Kamimura from TUS, and Professor Naoko Ohtani from Osaka Metropolitan University, has improved upon this method by having a machine learning model differentiate the type of lipids present in the liver at a pixel-by-pixel level.
The framework differentiates lipids based on the hydrocarbon chain length (HCL) and degree of saturation (DS) of fatty acids, helping estimate the risk of SLD progression, steatohepatitis (NASH), and SLD/NASH-associated liver cancer.
“In addition to qualitative information, such as the total lipid content, we can now also visualize qualitative information, such as the characteristics of the distribution of fatty acids contained in lipids, mainly triglycerides,” says Dr. Umezawa.
Notably, identifying lipids based on molecular composition using NIR-HSI faced challenges due to the overlapping absorption spectra of various biomolecules. To address this, the researchers used a support vector regression machine learning model, which was trained to recognize the composition of 16 fatty acids.
This training data was obtained through gas chromatography analysis of liver samples of mice that were fed diets of varying fat content. By applying machine learning to NIR-HSI data, it became possible to interpret the spectral information in terms of the distribution of fat (DS and HCL) within the liver.
DS, indicating the double bonds or degree of saturation of the fatty acids, is calculated as the CH2 fraction from the sum of the CH and CH2 numbers. HCL, representing the fatty acid chain length, is determined by the ratio of CH3 + CH2 + CH + 1(COOH) groups to the number of CH3 groups.
Using this method, the researchers successfully determined the fatty acid composition in mice livers, revealing correlations with the fat contents in their diets. For instance, the livers of mice on a diet rich in saturated fats like palmitic acid and myristic acid exhibited a notably high DS, whereas mice fed with unsaturated fats such as α-linoleic acid showed a low DS.
The DS, HCL, and total lipid content were depicted as a color map, offering a unique visual representation of fat distribution in the liver, thus simplifying the diagnosis of fatty liver conditions. “Visualization of lipid distribution in higher-dimensional information rather than simply using total lipid content as a single parameter provides a novel tool for revealing the pathophysiological conditions of liver diseases and metabolism,” remarks Dr. Umezawa.
Indeed, by providing a rapid and label-free technique to identify fatty liver, which affects a large population segment, the method could be a potential alternative to invasive liver biopsy procedures, transforming liver care.
This novel framework could also find potential applications in pharmacological research, such as drug metabolism, toxicity, and efficacy; studies on metabolic disorders through metabolic imaging; and identifying responders and non-responders in clinical trials.
The researchers also expect the framework to find applications in identifying personalized nutritional strategies―tailoring plans and optimizing interventions for better nutrition―through biomarker identification and treatment response prediction. In summary, the novel framework developed by the researchers could revolutionize healthcare and related research.
