ik it just came out and was only recently finished (like, finished Sept 2023 lol) so this is probably bias speaking but i am extremely taken by She Who Became the Sun and He Who Drowned the World, these books are fckn phenomenal. the gender-fuckery, the exploration of gender and sexual performances, the hidden message of embracing ourselves in all our ugliness and 'deficiency' and making a place for ourselves and ppl like us when others shun us. these books are just!!!

documentaries: immortal egypt (Joanne Fletcher)

i really really love documentaries and this mini series hold a special place in my heart bcs i love history and I've always been fascinated by egypt and Joanne's enthusiasm is just so joyous and infectious, i love it. i put this on repeat in the background when i was doing my graduation project in 2018 lol yea, just me listening to egyptian docu while working my ass off on AutoCAD lol

anime: sarusuberi/miss hokusai

idk how to explain but there's just a quality to this animated film that got me going... like, i adore howl's moving castle but miss hokusai is sth else. it's so peaceful but also deeply profound and visceral somehow.

tv series: aircrash investigation

i love planes, i love the Concorde in particular, but it has nth to do with how cool planes are but with how child-me saw riding planes as a thing that only ppl with money could do. it evolved from there.

i also love mysteries and aircrash investigation is both lol

i remember watching it on tv when i was an adolescent and i was fascinated with the mystery and problem-solving of it all ever since.

movie: the prince of egypt

it's a story about love; love that forgives, love that creates hate, love that divides.

drama: nirvana in fire (c-drama), beyond evil (k-drama), kluen cheewit (thai soap opera)

bl-specific: old fashion cupcake (anime AND manga)

the plot of these dramas is impeccable (tho kluen cheewit is extremely dramatic so pls beware lol), the character developments are fckn amazing, and what's even more important is the platonic relationships between the characters!!!

also, special shout-out to thai bl soap opera khun chai/to sir (with love) as well! the drama is off the charts, the characters are flawed & human & infinitely relatable & Tian & Yang's brotherhood is EVERYTHING

just one of the best bls out there and I've consumed A LOT of BLs/yaois... ALL SORT of em lol

the story is really grounded in reality, the plot is so mundane and relatable, the characters are mature but extremely flawed, and the art (in the case of manga) and the acting (in the case of the series) are amazing.

With Oscars round the corner I wanted to explore a Movie Industry 'verse, featuring Screenplay writer Nanamin x Starlet Reader, with some messy Director Geto x Reader thrown into the mix cuz it's HOllywood so why not.

I don't have things fully fleshed out, this is only a drabble. It's just a fun little plot bunny I'm considering chasing down the rabbithole, so if you enjoy it, please leave some feedback! Thanks~

Nanami toes the line he's sketched in the sand - and you keep scuffing it. Because it is sand, not cement, as much as Nanami would like to believe that. The grains keep trickling through the hourglass, and his throat gets ever more parched around you.

He used to be able to call you to the side of a sound stage in between takes to murmur his corrections. Now he just scratches them out on a clipboard, cursing PAs and sticky notes that aren't at all adhesive.

"I miss you."

Glue floods his throat. Nanami glances at your reflection, eclipsed by a bevy of stylists coiling your locks into perfectly tight, period-accurate ringlets.

"Bunkering down in that cramped trailer, discussing stories. Have you seen Sangsoo's latest by the way?"

You catch sight of him in the mirror and smile, but someone tuts at you to "stay still". Nanami watches your lips go taut as the gloss swipes over, but he knows where to look. Sure enough, there's a matching shimmer in your gaze, locked in on his. Nanami swallows, his eyes dropping to the papers in his lap.

"Been too busy," he grunts.

"Right Now, Wrong Then remains my fav, but you should make your own assessment. I wouldn't mind seeing his new film twice. Maybe over the weekend, we could-"

"I'll be holed up with the rewrites. Studio's orders. I'm leaving your new lines here."

Nanami doesn't so much hear you sigh, as glimpse a small corner of the glass getting fogged up. He feels your stare slide from the rear view to his retreating silhouette as he turns and walks away from your pout, from the memory of a puff of air tickling his mouth.

Every day you seem more like a mirage, less an oasis.

But these are the desert dunes he's chosen to trek through, grounds ever shifting.

Framed by ink strands, jet stone irises cut across steepled ivory hands, with a gleam that renders the lamination of the page redundant.

The black and white portrait rustles, a splotch of darkness seeps over those eyes, coloured grey as the super-sized quote [DRAWN TO TALENT] is imprinted across the ravines of cheekbones and deep recesses of sockets, now thinned with text.

He's well aware of your history with Geto, the inaccuracies of the accounts on both sides, the way the two of you are the darlings of the gossip columns, as cyclical as the seasons and heroin chic coming back in vogue, appalling as it is.

"How's the fluff piece for our auteur extraordinaire? He opt for self-flagellating or self-fellating?"

So, trouble in paradise then, Nanami thinks.

He shrugs. "The box office'll be happy."

"Oh, hooraay. Praise be for the ultimate - nay, the only metric and arbiter of art."

"Nay?"

His tone is withering, but not enough to stop your belligerence from sprouting. Or spouting.

"Hey. Do you think I got where I am based on sheer luck, or looks?"

You're a few too many whiskey neats in.

"Clearly they weren't stumbling blocks," he says drily, gesturing for his refill. Normally you'd find his diplomacy coy. Now it's just tiresome.

"I expected more than this calibre of flattery from a BAFTA nominee," you sneer, fingers creeping along Nanami's taut wrist. He steadies his grip around his bourbon.

"I'm off the clock. You'll have to get your one-liners elsewhere. Union rules."

You lean in, the cloud of alcohol and your perfume shrouding Nanami.

"Such a stickler," you whisper, the taunt gusting warm and wet against his lips. Through the fog, just barely, Nanami telescopes in on the gleam of your maraschino-red mouth, the gimlet glint of your eyes.

Not chandeliers, but stalactites, the notion coalesces somehow, despite your distractions. Nanami's brain churns, scrambling for a deflective quip, only to short-circuit when he feels your other hand land on his thigh.

"You know, in these scenarios, the rulebook gets thrown out - if one even exists in the first place."

A rough palm clasps your hand, but your forehead brushes Nanami's.

"My point is, I don't give up. I always get what I want."

"Assuming you know what that is."

You freeze.

It's better this way, Nanami thinks, watching the shards twist in your eyes. There is still barely an inch between you and him, close enough for him to feel the breath and consequences you hold in the quiver of your lips. At arm's length, and a lifetime away.

At least like this, he has a front row seat to the fracturing story.

He was never meant to be the protagonist, let alone a hero.

Grandma made me a dress in a couple hours, the shirt under it is some polo bought for a fiver. Didn't wanna cut my hair, so its just... there (fun fact: my first proper paid-for-in-salon haircut was because of cosplay ... but thats another story frm diff outfit) the manga art made her dress more Blue than Green, nobody at me

skip ahead couple years - feeling that itch to Akane-chan again.... The OG dress had zero chances of fitting, we made me a new one! Instead of something shapeless, the overall dress follows manga cues (and is u know... fitted to me) The blouse is now real-life school uniform blouse (used to be able to buy these at Sears)

this is where the shenanigans begin! A friend was gonna cosplay Ranma-chan w/ me, so my old dress is what she's wearing, and P-chan is actually her plush that she would loan me (we did this arrangement a few times)

the greatest accidentally-in-character moment was us both trying to get to the con! It was pouring rain, we had one umbrella. Which totalz got wrecked by wind while we're still couple blocks away Everyone visualize now - an irritated Akane is tryin to run up the street with a very annoyed (and wet) Ran-chan chasing after her

How To Diagnose Marvel Movie Brain Rot

In an opinion piece by Martin Scorsese at The New York Times on Marvel movies, he said “In the end, I don’t think they’re cinema”. In our modern world, superhero films are more popular than ever. And no company is better known for their superhero films than Marvel Comics. Almost everyone you know has seen a Marvel film. When Infinity War came out, the world rejoiced. Batman who? Superman who? Ironman is the new Man of Steel. But have you caught the bug? Have you started to hold these films as a baseline for what a good superhero, nay, good movie should look like? If so, you may be beginning to have your mind clouded by the Avengers Infection.

So here are 5 ways for me to help you find out if you have been infected with Marvel Movie Brain Rot.

You believe Black Widow was a well written character

Despite what the films and fan made material made you think, Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow, was not a well written female character. The first Avengers film doesn’t even pass the Bechdel test. For the uninitiated, that is whether a film has two female characters who have a single conversation not about men. So, not a good look there Avengers films.

You think the Avengers were all friends

It’s not your fault, it’s a misunderstanding of source material. It’s fine to like superheroes and not care about their source material, but you must do so with the understanding that your perception of the characters are not accurate.

You didn’t like Batman v Superman because no one told jokes

There is not liking certain kinds of movies, and there’s thinking one franchise should define the genre. Scorsese says “What’s not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk”. Marvel movies, at this point, have a formula. Some guy, usually a white guy, gets bestowed with power and a mission. They tell jokes. End. The rest of cinema, even in superhero films, can be very different.

Black Panther and Shang-Chi are the only major nonwhite films you know

Black Panther and Shang-Chi are good movies. They are enjoyable, respectful, and arguably make more of an attempt at art than the rest of Marvel’s catalog. But there are worlds of Black, Asian, Latin, Russian, and any other country you can think of with rich film history. If you’ve only seen these two films from this culture, then your filmography worldview is very small.

You think Endgame was the height of cinema

Scorsese says, “All the same, they(marvel movies) lack something essential to cinema: the unifying vision of an individual artist.” Endgame was a monolith film built from a decade of stories, CGI techniques, famous actors, and too many cooks. It is impossible to identify an artist's single unique vision in Endgame, and that's not good.

It’s not bad to love things. Whether Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, or any other problematic fav, you deserve to enjoy bad media. What isn’t okay is letting your favorite things cloud your judgement of actual quality. I’m all for living bad shit, but you gotta remember that bad movies are still bad. And I’m begging use some reading comprehension.

Hey so i know we're all sad over the ending of tma tomorrow but may i recommend a horror podcast I've been listening to lately to yall? It's called Hi Nay by Motzie Dapul and Reg Geli, it's about a Filipino named Mari along with detectives Donner and Murphy and her friend Laura, set in Toronto where they encounter Creatures and Objects and contains Filipino folklore as well, told in the style of phone calls from Mari to her mother.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - I’m surprised you haven’t seen/read.  It’s just a load of fun.

Kekkai Sensen - I’ve only seen the first season but it was so fun.  It’s animated by BONES if that makes a difference to you.

Arslan Senki - Ceator of FMA making a story about a prince trying to reclaim his throne? Sign me up.  The art gets me all nostalgic.

Enen no Shouboutai - This doesn’t need to be on here but it felt wrong to not include it.

Shadows House - I hear the manga is much better but as I have not read I cannot verify.  That being said I loved the anime.  It was a fun and at times downright creepy mystery without losing all the joy sol gives me.

Godzilla: Singular Point - It just has really nice visuals and cute characters.  Also godzilla.

Nagi no Asukara - This made me cry.  While there is a manga adaptation, as it’s an anime original I’m not confident enough to rec it under both.

Hataraku Maou-sama! - Adapted from a light novel but has a manga version.  It’s fun and with s2 coming I expect we’ll see it on our dashes again soon. Gotta get ahead of the curve.

Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. - Fun op protagonist but in a very sol way.

K - Excuse me I’m just still thinking of yata misaki and fushimi saruhiko. Has some manga adaptions. Lost small world has a manga and that’s honestly the most important part of the series you just need the context of the main series first.

Modao Zushi - I’ve fulfilled my obligation to han.  Has a manga adaption.

Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta… - So fun.  Has a manga adaption.

Promare - It’s nonsense but so fun to look at.

manga only - Either manga only, I have not seen the adaptation, or I just think the manga is much better.

BURN THE WITCH  - While I love the anime, you need the prequel manga to make it make sense and since reading is easier for you might as well just go with that.  

Karin - I really like the anime and the anime original ending but this is how I first consumed it so this is the way I will rec.

Akame ga Kill! - I liked the anime.  The manga is better.

Owari no Seraph - I know you’ve watched the anime but the manga is so much better.  I need someone to scream with me.

Terra Formars - On indefinite hiatus.  I really enjoy this but it will slaughter all your favs. My favs are all still alive though so we good.

Choujin X - I see this on your planning.  It’s 3 chapters in but v good so far.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne - My favorite magical girl and one of the few without an awful age gap between the mc and the love interest.  It’s a lot of fun and I’m loving the anime so far but the angel backstories here make it worth the read rather than being interchangable.

Robot x Laserbeam - THIS DESERVES AN ANIME.  Golf manga by the creator of knb.

Tokyo Ghoul - At this point you need to just because everyone has.  It is fantastic though.

Dr. STONE reboot: Byakuya - I don’t know if you know this exists.

Sonyeowang - It’s been a while so I don’t remember it super well but it made me laugh a lot and I thought the art was pretty.

Beelzebub - I haven’t finished it and it’s been ages but I remember loving this.  It has an anime but I just haven’t gotten around to seeing it.
