#book recs #i haven't finished the last one yet but it's been good so far! i really admire these women's resilience and solidarity #some inspiring stories of political activism + insight into aspects of korean history i didn't know about #i wanted to do a half-fiction half-nonfiction list like last year but i've read mostly disappointing fiction this year :(#my favourites were probably kivirähk's the man who spoke snakish & catherynne valente's radiance; though it wasn't as good as orphan tales #i'm reading jacques abeille's les jardins statuaires right now and it's quite frustrating because on the one hand #it's well-written and interesting with original worldbuilding. on the other i'm 300 pages in and there have been #2 female characters. the purpose of both (so far) was to have sex with the male protagonist and only 1 has a name #which makes the read feel less original and more ''same old shit as far as i'm concerned''

y'know who doesn't get enough credit for being a feminist icon? Merida from Brave. she refused to be married off, demanded to be treated the same as her brothers, took control of her freedom, and did it all without having to change her clothes to prove a point. sure, she hated the dress her mother made her wear, but only because it was restrictive and uncomfortable. she did archery, rock climbing, etc. all in a dress because Merida understands that independence isn't an aesthetic, it's a mindset. the way she dressed had nothing to do with her independence, and everything to do with her preference. Merida is an example of true feminism because she was a rebellious, maverick badass, and the fact that she wore a dress had nothing to do with that.

Ever thought about what Magni's birth mother (Járnsaxa) would look like? Considering the parallels between Thor & Kratos (+Thor being Kratos' foil), I imainged the angst that Járnsaxa could have been Thor's Lysandra before the massacre. Knowing Járnsaxa's background, it's likely that Magni wouldn't remember her at all. 😔

I think about Járnsaxa all the time.

I like to think that Magni is her spitting image. He got her blond hair, her stern features, and they frown exactly alike! But you are correct, Magni never really knew her, the way I think about it, and folks don't speak of her often. As far as Asgard is concerned, Sif is Magni's mother. Though it is difficult to ignore Magni's blatant resemblance, and glaring Jötnar heritage, the Asgardians are masters in the art of blissful ignorance. Magni is Aesir. Who even remembers where he came from? He's Thor's son!

While not yet mentioned, she will play an important role in my fanfic Brittle Knives. Ya'know, that thing I've been very slowly pecking at.

I went to a local yarn store for the first time, and while I was there, somebody was talking about getting a beginner's knitting kit, and she inquired about when lessons were, and when she was told that they'd be happy to sit down with her and teach her, she was so delighted. She talked about how excited she was and how much she wanted to learn to knit, and it just... it made me fall in love with humanity. It was this pure, unadulterated happiness coming from somebody and it was so genuine and kind, and I couldn't help but smile.

I guess all of this is to say... every moment, there are tiny little joys like this all over the world, and it makes this life worth living. I hope you witness and feel joy this simple, this pure.
