Since I believe in sharing, I'm gonna leave this here. Idk who it'll help, if anybody, but I'd feel bad if I kept it to myself.

If you're trying to play Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill (Original Version), or Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger on a Linux device via Wine/Lutris/CrossOver/etc., and everything seems to be working fine except the audio, which skips to the next file/track without any input, then try this:

Open your Wine Bottle's C: Drive, and navigate to your game's installation directory.

Locate the "Game.ini" file, and open it in whatever .txt editor your distro has (like gedit).

Find, within the file, where it says "UseDirectSound"

This setting should be set to a value of 1, by default.

Backspace the 1 and type a 0 (zero) in its place.

Save the file.

The audio shouldn't skip anymore, and if that was your only issue running the game, it should run a-okay now.

I don’t know if this is particularly recognizable anymore, considering it would be absolutely wild for this screen to appear when playing a digital download of the game, but I played the OG version of this game on my dad’s ancient computer that had multiple discs and required you to switch them out when trying to get into the boiler room. That is my core memory of this game, so I had to memorialize it! This was one of the first I played, and I remember the puzzles being terribly difficult and I kept thinking I had missed clues in the boiler room so I went in an unnecessary number of times. I personally enjoyed the remastered version as well, I felt like it did a good job of updating but also honoring the legacy of the game that started it all.

Also featured are a few of my Nancy Drew books, original editions from 1930! These have been passed down from my grandma to my mom to me, and my collection is one of my most prized possessions 💙

I am legitimately SO close to getting the first two Nancy Drew games to work on Linux. They’ve always booted up and run, it’s just that the audio will play only a few seconds and then skip to the next file/track. It does that with music and dialogue, which obviously makes the game rather unplayable. However, when I moved from CrossOver to Lutris, the performance actually improved quite a bit, and it would take a few minutes of running the game before the audio started skipping. I have no idea what’s causing this, and it’s becoming more and more frustrating. These games are literally the only thing keeping Windows on a machine of mine.
