Sogaki Hanare ~ Naruto OC

I revamped my old Naruto OC, Sango Uchiha (you can find her online in the Naruto OC Wiki, lol), and I fell in love with her and her story! Please continue reading if you want to know more about Rin Nohara's cousin. Feel free to give me some OC critique, in case there is anybody around that cares about this stuff.

Name: Sogaki Hanare

Clan: No Clan, but related to the Nohara‘s.

Gender: f

Age: Kakashi Gaiden - 14, Arc 1 - 27-28, Arc 2 - 31-32

Time Set In: most of her story is figured out during the third great Ninja war, when Team Minato was fighting missions and Asuma, Kurenai and Guy were in academy. But she is there for the whole series, really.

Birthplace: Konoha

Lives In: Konoha

Appearance:

Black hair which is tied to a chignon with fringe to right above her eyes; she has bangs that she ties with two wine red ties at the bottom; completly black iris (a leftover from the distant relation her father has to the Uchiha Clan); her clothing is the typical shinobi trousers (high-waisted) and shoes with a net shirt that covers her arms and neck fully and on top of that a lose, breathable black t-shirt; her everyday outfit are wide 3/4 high-waisted black trousers, and a white tee with a small Konoha emblem on the chest. She likes to wear golden jewlery (necklace and around her trousers) in her everyday life.

Family: 

Dad: Her dad is a distant relative of the Uchiha‘s, which is why her appearance is very similar to theirs. However there is no Kekkei Genkai in their blood whatsover, the relation to the Uchiha’s several generations back. Her dad is a ninja at Chuunin level and teaches students at the academy.

Mom: Her mom is a civilian that works in the textile industry. The factory produces the ninja attire for all Konoha shinobi, her mom in particular is responsible for the Konoha headbands.

Rin Nohara: Sogaki is Rin‘s cousin and one year older than her. Sogaki went to the academy the same time as Rin and graduated as Genin and Chuunin at the same time as well. They were really close (BFFs) and when she died, Sogaki fell into a depression.

(later) Kakashi Hatake: Kakashi will be Sogaki’s husband after the 4th Ninja world war. They became friends ever since Rin died. After getting close to each other during Kakashi’s ANBU years (read: their puberty), they had a thing with each other on and off. However, Kakashi could never fully commit to a relationship due to his trauma. They lost contact for a while, however they reconciled after Kakashi became the teacher of team 7 and was looking for some advice from a kunoichi for Sakura. Between the time skip, Sogaki and Kakashi got close to each other, being a couple from Shippuden onwards. They never really made it official up until their wedding after the 4th war.

(later) Rin Hatake: Rin is Sogaki’s and Kakashi’s first born child. She was pregnant with her and raised her during the time that Kakashi was hokage, which was hard because she was on her own a lot. It was Sogaki’s idea to name her after her cousin and Kakashi’s old teammate.

(later) Sakumo Hatake: Sakumo is Sogaki’s and Kakashi’s second born child, he is three years younger than Rin. 

Occupation:

Sogaki mainly works at the Hokage‘s administrative board. She‘s had one Genin team in between though, right after becoming Jonin. When Kakashi is Hokage, she is a housewife, taking care of her children for nine years. After her maternity leave she returned to the Hokage’s administrative board and worked for Kakashi for a bit -- she now works for Naruto.

Rank: Genin at 9, Chuunin at 13, Jonin (barely) at 24-25-ish

Team: No team right now. Her Genin team consisted of Aoba Yamashiro and Shibi Aburame. She went on some missions with Kurenai, Guy and Asuma after they became Chuunin.

Relationships:

Kakashi Hatake: see above!

Rin Nohara: Rin was Sogaki’s cousin. Due to her same age and gender and their shared carrier path, they hung out with each other a lot and became somewhat best friends. This is also where Sogaki met Obito and Kakashi, however they didn’t really have a lot to do with each other. Sogaki loved Rin dearly and when she died Sogaki fell in a depression. 

Maito Guy: Guy and Sogaki share a ~motivational~ bond. At first Sogaki made fun of him like all the others, but after he was admitted to the academy she figured he was a fun pal to be around. They both share a similar vibe (optimistic and energetic) and thus get along well with each other. She learnt some Taijutsu from him.

Kurenai Yuhei: Kurenai became Sogaki’s best female friend after Rin died. They are very different from each other when it comes to their fighting specifics, pretty much opposites. However this is why they complement each other well when they went on missions. When Sogaki was pregnant and had her first child, Kurenai (with Sakura) was there for her the most. Rin and Mirai went on play dates a lot.

Asuma Sarutobi: Asuma and Sogaki became friends while in the academy. After graduating, they hung out in the dango restaurant a lot together with Kurenai, Guy, Genma, Raido and the others. While she thought he was kinda cute, she never made a move on Asuma. 

Genma Shiranui: Genma and Sogaki know each other from the friend group around Asuma, Kurenai, Guy and the others, so basically from ninja academy. When Kakashi was gone on ANBU missions, she and Genma had an on and off thing with each other. They kept it purely sexual though and didn’t have a lot to talk about in private. 

Raido: Raido and Sogaki know each other from the friend group around Asuma, Kurenai and Guy, so basically from ninja academy. When Kakashi was gone on ANBU missions, she and Raido had an on and off thing with each other. Raido was on missions a lot, so they didn't hook up as often as Kakashi or Genma. However Sogaki had a small crush on him after he brought her a present from a mission and forgot about Kakashi for a while.

Anko: Anko and Sogaki know each other from the friend group around Asuma, Kurenai, Guy and the others, so basically from ninja academy. Anko isn't Sogaki's favourite comrade. Somehow they don't click with each other.

Ebisu: Ebisu and and Sogaki know each other from the friend group around Asuma, Kurenai and Guy, so basically from ninja academy. Sogaki thinks he's okay.

Aoba Yamashiro: He was one of Sogaki’s team members after she became Genin.

Shibi Aburame: Hew as one of Sogaki’s team members after she became Genin.

Hayate: Hayate and Sogaki know each other from the friend group around Asuma, Kurenai and Guy, so basically from ninja academy.

Obito Uchiha: Obito and Sogaki know each other through the academy and Rin. They hung out sometimes, but not too much. She was pretty annoyed because he had such a big crush on Rin and kept her occupied so much.

Personality:

Sogaki is very outgoing but a little unflexible. She likes to plan things and doesn’t like when things get in her way -- this is why she is not the best on missions and prefers to work at the administrative board of the Hokage. Thankfully, her intelligence is better than her Ninja skills so this is also recognized by Konoha’s strategists, who barely put her on missions. She likes to work a lot. Due to her job and her growing up during times of war, she is very, very loyal to Konoha and views the village as the best one in the fire land.

When she is not working, she usually will be found in some karaoke bar where she gets drunk to forget all of her responsibilities. In her younger years, she usually took guys home every night she went for drinks -- if she wasn’t already with Kakashi. She never had any serious interest in a relationship though, probably because she was subconciously waiting for Kakashi to get over his trauma.

When Kakashi and her finally got together, she stopped going out and started taking care of their flat and took on a little garden. She harvests tomatoes, strawberries and sunflowers. She has a good relationship with her parents: Sometimes her dad comes over to help her with gardening work. When Kakashi gets home from missions, Sogaki takes care of him and tells her mom when his uniform needs fixing. During the 4th Ninja war however, she also joined alliances and gave everything to be a useful soldier.

History: 

Sogaki was born as Hanare the same year as Rin Nohara. Rin’s dad and Sogaki‘s mom are siblings.

Sogaki’s mom, stemming from the Nohara family, married a man that works at the Genin academy. He is a Chuunin. They met because of their jobs, Sogaki’s mom - a civilian - produces the ninja attire for students and ninjas, her specifically being responsible for the ninja headbands. Thus, when the students were graduating as Genins, her father would always place the order at Sogaki’s mom. 

Acocording to her parents, it was up to Sogaki whether to become a ninja or not. However, due to the third ninja world war she soon made up her mind to join the ninja academy, trying to make the village proud. In her childhood this was also when her very strong bond to Konoha as her home developed. She has a strong connection to the village and will do anything that’s in favor of Konoha, which also shows in her job at the Hokage’s administrative board later. 

Since Rin Nohara is the same age as Sogaki and they both decided for it at the same time, they joined academy at the same time. Since they knew each other from family gatherings they became best friends instantly, though Rin spent a lot of time with Obito as well. Sogaki only joined them sometimes, which is how she know Obito and later on also Kakashi. Usually, the Rin, Obito and Kakashi were doing their own stuff though and Sogaki was with Asuma, Kurenai and Guy instead.

When Rin died, Sogaki wasn’t told that it was a teammate of her that did it. Kakashi was at Rin’s funeral and Sogaki remembered him from the academy and Rin, later going up to him to ask him about how her last mission was like. Kakashi barely told her anything and left. Since Rin was Sogaki’s best friend, she would visit her grave regularly, which is where she met Kakashi more often. Eventually they talked to each other, usually about their memories of Rin. Sometimes afterwards they had lunch or dinner together. At some point, they became friends who could grief about their favorite friend.

When Kakashi joined the ANBU, he loosened up a little and due to his mysterious job became pretty attractive to Sogaki. She already had some experiences and after one of Kakashi’s missions - he had to seduce a woman much older than him and lost his virginity to her - Sogaki found him totally irresistible. She used all of her womanpower to seduce him, they spent a night with alcohol and a lot of flirting and at some point they kissed and slept together. Sogaki told herself that there weren’t any feelings involved and for Kakashi, developing feelings wasn’t an option at all. This is why they continued their friends with benefits relationship for a long time. During this time, Sogaki was working in the administrative board of the Hokage Minato Namikaze.

When Kakashi was pulled back from the ANBU and given Genin teams, he pulled fully away from Sogaki. He didn’t like himself as a teacher and thus couldn’t agree to any romantic relationship. During this time, Sogaki went on missions herself together with Kurenai, Asuma and Maito Guy where she could get her mind off her private life (and sleep around with some other guys). After that, she was recommended as Jonin due to her excellent work in the administrative board at the Hokage and her good results in practical missions. Soon, she was given her own teams. Since she became a teacher one year later than Kakashi, she took one of the teams that Kakashi had sent back to the academy at one point. Together with Sogaki and the time they needed, they succeeded and became Chuunin in the end. After that, she returned to work at the administrative board for the Hokage.

When Kakashi took team 7, he reconnected with Sogaki and also Maito Guy, Asuma and Kurenai to talk about their teaching experiences. Kakashi and Sogaki became closer again. During the time skip to Shippunden, they became a couple.

My very first character was a naruto OC - I was 14-ish? And it was as predictable as you can get: his name was hunrang (mispronunciation of Hwoarang from tekken)

He was super cool because his clan was descendant form the uchiha and hyuga clans which meant that he had the DRAGON EYES, which let him do all the other powers and more.

He knew all the iconic moves and could totally do as many shadow clones as naruto you guys, and totally ended up with tenten (my cartoon crush back then)

although the funniest part was that he wears a kakashi mask, and when asked why, I panicked and gave him a cat nose, which in hindsight is amazing.

He's the guy I got 'critiqued' for by a 28 year old, and made me so embarrased I couldn't try again with an oc for like, 5 years.

I Rate OCs

Hello there you can call me Critique or Crit. I made this blog because I thought it could be fun and informative to critique OCs sent into me. I accept all sent to me but here’s some things you should know.

I rate OCs only from anime/manga I know well. That list is not the longest. Right now my main focus is Hypnosis Microphone. Other anime/manga are: Naruto, Inuyasha, Psycho Pass, Golden Kamuy, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, JoJo, Chobits, Pokemon, My Hero Academia, Rick & Morty (I know it’s not anime but still). Any thing not listed feel free to send in anyway, if I don’t know it I will just let you know.

When you send in an OC to be rated (send it through an ask), please send information all about the OC. If there’s too much to fit into an Ask, please send a private message or a link in the ask with all the details you want to include.

As a warning, know that I am a harsh critique. If you cannot handle the heat, best not to ask for a critique! I stick to logic and the anime/manga’s universe rules strictly.

not to be that girl lmao, but could i get some sasuke pairing advice? i really enjoyed reading the pairing advice you gave to others but i hadn’t seen one of his yet. personally, i don’t see him being the type to really fit with anyone but? yeah please and thanks!

So, a Sasuke pairing guide.

That’s no problem. I mean, why else has he been without one for so long? It’s not like he’s super difficult to write for or anything.

On a serious note, Sasuke is a complex character. That said, I think what makes him most difficult to pair isn’t necessarily his personality but these two things:

His tunnel vision. Sasuke was occupied with his goals and was only interested in seeing them realized. He didn’t pay attention to people unless they could somehow help in achieving those goals (see: Team Hebi / Taka). Sasuke was never seeking an intimate relationship (whether platonic or otherwise) because it was irrelevant to what he was trying to accomplish.

The timeline. Sasuke’s personal journey is closely linked to Naruto’s main plot—he’s pretty much the main driving force of the story. He’s got a lot going on and, combined with the previous point, there’s not a lot of wiggle room to integrate an OC into his story.

Of course, there are ways of pairing Sasuke—he just requires some careful consideration if you’re sticking with canon, which is the assumption I'm going with when writing this guide.

On that note, I want to mention something: a relationship with Sasuke will likely be a slow burn, long distance one. It will include Sasuke being MIA frequently and, when he does finally return, there will likely be baggage to work through.

This, however, should be embraced, in my opinion.

The most common approach I've seen in pairing Sasuke with an OC is to have them meet in Konoha during Part I > OC follows Sasuke to Orochimaru > OC follows Sasuke by joining Team Taka / Hebi and then profit. This approach, while giving Sasuke and OC consistent exposure to one another, is one that really works against OC creators as it creates this need to justify too many story and character deviations, which causes unnecessary frustration.

My solution: don't have OC present during every step of Sasuke's journey.

Think outside the box. Have an OC that was always an affiliate of Sound and they meet when Sasuke defects. Let OC and Sasuke first meet or reconnect after the Fourth Shinobi War. Have them meet as adults during the Boruto era. Develop your OC's life outside of their interactions with Sasuke; don't force them to always be together.

With that little tangent out the way, let’s talk about his personality a little.

After the Uchiha Massacre, Sasuke was pretty cold. He didn't care much about relationships—or other people in general. Unless they were stronger than him, in which case, he would obsess over surpassing them. During Part I, Sasuke's capacity for empathy was a bit higher—as seen with his interactions with Team 7, among other instances—but he eventually discards this in exchange for pursuing power during Shippūden. There is a callous disregard for others during this time as well, something he doesn't begin to move past until the end of Shippūden. Following Parts I and II, Sasuke begins moving towards trying to form and strengthen connections with those around him. He's still not outwardly brimming with emotion, but he is much more capable and open to expressing those kind, caring feelings he has for others in his own way.

So, finally, onto what you probably want most: what Sasuke might like in a partner! Yay!

Someone talented and / or useful. Applicable mainly to Parts I and II Sasuke. If your OC is not as strong as or stronger than Sasuke, he's not interested, as the great Cloud Strife often puts it. OC would have to be on Neji / Gaara / Rock Lee levels of strength and notoriety to catch Sasuke's attention—everyone else is literally fodder to him. Similarly, when he's in his Team Hebi / Taka days, he's only interested in those that can help fulfill his goals. This is where issues of power level can come into play (especially during Part I), but the only advice I can really give is to just develop your OC's abilities, strengths and weaknesses.

Someone empathetic but uncompromising. Applicable mainly to post-Shippūden Sasuke. What I mean is Sasuke might want someone that understands his motives for his past actions—but would also need to see the error in them. Sasuke himself is completely ashamed of his past actions and seeks to repent for them, so I doubt he would want someone making excuses for him when he himself doesn't.

Someone steadfast in their convictions. Someone that stays on their own personal path no matter what. I think this would be appealing to Sasuke, considering how his own goals, feelings and convictions were constantly tried and tested throughout the series.

Someone accommodating. A person that understands that Sasuke won't always be there but still chooses to welcome him, maybe not with open arms, but at least with an open heart would go a long way. OC can (understandably) be upset, hurt and annoyed with him but someone that realizes Sasuke is trying in his own way to become better and is willing to work on their relationship together is cool.

Emotionally grounded and mature. I'm not saying your OC has to be without their own problems—everyone has their problems, ya know—but I think someone that is aware of their emotional needs would be able help and support Sasuke in mending his emotional needs. They'd be able to communicate and all that good jazz.

Easygoing and open. While I don't think Sasuke is bothered by loud, more rambunctious people (see: Naruto and Sakura), I do think that a calm, mellow individual could work well with him. Also someone forthright with their feelings would mesh well, in my opinion. They'd probably be the "lead dancer," if you will, when it comes to the communication aspects of their relationship—they could say the things that Sasuke might struggle to say or express without feeling the embarrassment or hesitation he might feel.

Overall, like I said, when it comes to pairing an OC with Sasuke, it's better not force things or do too many things at once. Working on a smaller scale, I think, would be ideal and more enjoyable when attempting to write a romance for Sasuke.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend going the typical route of having an OC born and raised in Konoha jumping around the story following after Sasuke—unless, of course, you think you have good reasoning behind it. I would recommend on exploring post- Shippūden and Boruto era Sasuke, where he is more emotionally available, and there is more room for relationship building plus boruto era sasuke is pretty tasty fr fr.

But, as always, do what makes you happy and have fun with it!

Review: Shurami Inuzuka

I think that Shurami Inuzuka is a very cute character. I love her physical design and her canine companion. (We need more Inuzuka love!)

Appearance-wise, I think that Shurami has a very nice and original set of clothing compared to some other original characters. I like that even though she has somewhat revealing clothing, it does not look immodest. This is something people really tend to overlook, even though too much revealing clothing is not only distasteful but is also not practical for a shinobi. 

However, I do think that her color palette could use some more work. The blue of her jacket, skirt and Kuroamako’s collar are too saturated. Her eyes also stand out. The Inuzuka clan is known for having dark eyes and hair. I recommend adjusting her color palette.

As for her abilities, I am really impressed. You have done a fantastic job at leveling her statistics. They are very well balanced in my opinion. However, I do recommend that she should only have one or two nature transformations since she is only a chūnin. It is common for jōnin to have two or three nature transformations. Being a chūnin makes this her a little overpowered in my opinion.

For her backstory and personality, I really like that she’s paired with Shino Aburame! He needs more love! I like that she is included in the canon storyline, but not so that the other characters in the series are out of character, and she doesn’t stand out; in a good way! She’s not breaking canon. I feel that personality wise, she is a well-balanced character, and I’m excited to see what you continue to do with her in the future! Nothing glaringly wrong stands out in her backstory to me. Zine Leadership

This zine is organized by @siflshonen​ and @flawney​. This is our first fandom zine together, but it isn’t our first fandom event together. We’ve organized two fic swaps for the MP100 fandom in the past. You can read more about us in the information document. Sifl is the main point of contact for writers and Flawney is the main point of contact for artists, though our duties overlap.

Zine Concept

This zine is focused on a glimpse of the future for the canon students, residents, and alumni (or those that could have been alumni in another life) of BNHA’s UA high school. As such, the focus for these pieces should be on the canon characters rather than OCs. We bring this up for two specific reasons:

Our goal is to celebrate BNHA’s characters. While the “alumni in the future” theme does alter them somewhat, we feel that focusing on OCs is just a little too far from the core concept of the BNHA series we all love so well.

For the purposes of this zine, we discourage “fanchildren-centric” subjects or scenarios where every character (the emphasis here is on this happening to EVERY character) is in a heterosexual marriage and saddled with children as they are at the end of other big shonen such as, say, Bleach or Naruto. If you aren’t sure what that means or need clarification, please see our FAQ section in this document or ask Leadership directly for more information. However, don’t let this detail discourage you from including ships! Ships of all stripes are allowed! If it’s SFW and focused on canon characters, ships are completely acceptable!

Zine Distribution and Specifications

This zine will be digital only. As this is Leadership’s first fandom zine (and the team is small!) we feel this is the best and most consistent way to ensure all works are displayed to a high level of quality and easily accessible to all. (Shipping and production right now is kind of a nightmare, y’all.) Also, digital distribution means the final zine will be free!

Since exclusivity isn’t a draw and we aren’t creating this zine to raise money for charity or otherwise, we will also provide contributors the option to post their own submissions on their blogs/sites/Ao3 accounts after the zine is completed. (Creators can also tag this Tumblr on their pertinent posts to get them reblogged after the zine is complete!) On the flipside, by participating in this zine, you indicate that you as a contributor may not distribute this zine project for personal profits. (However, you can totally list it on your resume or CV as an anthology/collection in which your work is featured. If you feel it is appropriate to link to the zine on a portfolio site, you can do that, too. Just don’t take credit for submissions that are not yours, don’t put it behind a paywall, and don’t link your ko-fi/kickstarter/paypal/cashapp in the same space, and you’re good!)

Applications

Applicants must provide a portfolio that best demonstrates what they intend to create for this project. This portfolio doesn’t have to be fancy! Acceptable portfolio submissions can include: a blog/social media page primarily featuring (easy-to-find SFW) art, a Google Drive link with relevant example work, sample Ao3 or fanfiction.net page links, or a personal website link. Remember: the key for submitting examples is clarity and accessibility. Please ensure that the links/folders/etc are functioning and that leadership has access to view the files. Any applications with work that cannot easily be accessed will be rejected. Please do not include NSFW works in your portfolio. This zine will also NOT INCLUDE: any content that has to do with rape, incest, gore (like, gratuitous gore. Some blood, cuts, and bruises are fine), homophobia, racism, pedophilia, etc. If you have questions, please discuss it with leadership for approval and clarification.

Applicants may apply for multiple roles, but ultimately will only be accepted for one position. However, should the need arise for more artists/writers as the project progresses, there may be some flexibility if contributors are willing to create more pieces.

Question: Is there an age requirement for submission participants?

Answer: No. All ages are welcome!

Question: Can my submission be traditional art?

Answer: Sure, so long as you can scan/clean/edit it to display cleanly and nicely in a digital space.

Question: What if I want to create content that doesn’t necessarily center around the UA student characters or Alumni but still involves UA? For example, what if I wanted to create content of an AU where the villains were UA students? 

Answer: PITCH IT! INCLUDE IT AS A PITCH! We are open to more abstract takes on this concept!

Question: Okay, I understand you discourage fanchildren. But what about Eri? What if I want to do something cute with Aizawa/whoever-I-ship-him-with and Eri as a family? Or Mirio/whoever-I-ship-him-with and Eri doing something cute?

Answer: ERI IS A CANON CHARACTER AND A RESIDENT OF UA! This is allowed! Yes! Pitch it!

Attention Young Fanfic Writers

I had a thought last night about being a young 13 year old trying to write, and how much flack I got for it. This point is focused on my experience as a girl, but honestly, this goes for any young writer out there, girl, boy, trans, nb, etc. 

Do not listen to the critique of your work if you post it online. Please do not listen to people barking “unrealistic”, “mary/gary sue/stu”, or “self-insert.” Write whatever makes you happy and write for yourself. It doesn’t matter if your early writing is not amazing, it doesn’t matter if it is wish fulfillment, you’re practicing the craft! Trust me, there is an audience out there for everything you could think of. There are books about fucking dinosaurs and people pay for them. There is no such thing as forming bad habits. Unless you’re looking to be the next Dan Brown, you don’t need to worry much. 

If you want to write a story about how your character was John Wick’s first love before Helen, do it. 

If you want to write a Naruto OC who has the secret tailed beast no one knew about, do it. 

If you want to write a Lord of the Rings fic about a female Hobbit who helps Sam and Frodo destroy the ring and goes to the Undying Lands with Frodo, DO IT. 

If you want to write self-insert fics to help you deal with emotions and trauma, do it!!! Help yourself heal. Write about your first breakup and make some character the blueprint of your ex. Just write!  

No one is perfect when they start. No one. Write what you want to write, and delete comments that are mean. Trust me, someone will read it, and they will like it. But mostly, don’t put your self worth on the words of others. Just write.

I used to respond to every comment I got, I think it’s a lot of on and off and whether I have the energy to do so after posting. I read every comment still, but most of the time I just post and scurry back to the dark hole I live in lmao

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Uhhhh... I don’t really do angst? At least, I don’t like writing angst without any payoff. I’ll let my characters suffer, but I’ll fix things up by the end. I hate angst with lasting effects. 

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Considering I’ve actually only ever finished one long fic (The Rebel Path) I suppose that one? Though with 2003 being split into individual fics within a series, I’d say probably them considering each one so far has ended pretty nicely, but I don’t really consider them individual fics in my head given that they’re all one cohesive story. 

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the strangest one you’ve written?

I never have, and I honestly have never thought about it until recently. But I’m not going to talk about what it is because I’m contemplating actually writing it.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Oh, yes. Multiple, the first few by anonymous people who were laughably bad and angry about... something really silly, imo (they’ve been memed on the discord since). Then I got some really unnecessary nastiness on 2003 a while back, where someone claimed to be offering “critique” - unasked for, mind you - and just tore all my characters to shreds and threw around some pretty weighty accusations which would all be disproven if they’d actually read the fic (also gave evidence that just... made no sense). It was not a good time, but I’m getting back into the groove of writing now. Sorta. 

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Hehehehehehehe yes. 2003 began entirely from a smut prompt - it’s mostly pretty tame, imo, but I have fun with it. I’ve only ever written f/m but I’m planning on changing that soon :)

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. I hope not haha

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope. Honestly I like having my fics in English so I can interact with my readers

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yup! A Dove’s Dance With Wolves (my beloved), one of my John Wick fics, is co-written with the lovely postmodernsleaze! 

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Oh boy. That’s a tough question. I’m legally obligated to say V/Johnny Silverhand, but I’m also very partial to John Wick/Helen Wick/Irina Volkava (oc hehe), f!Shep/Garrus, f!Lavellan/Solas, in no particular order. 

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Oh, don’t say that lmao. The Hunt has been a wip for three years almost now, and I do want to go back and finish it someday. I have too much planned not too haha

What are your writing strengths?

I’ve been told I write character’s dialogue fittingly, and I have a blast writing characters (especially Johnny and V when they’re bickering). Lately I’ve also been enjoying how my scene writing and internal monologue/narration has been going. I also really obsess over my grammar lmao 

What are your writing weaknesses?

I definitely let my sentences trail on a bit sometimes. Lots of commas. Also I get ideas for more fics than I can handle and jump around between hyperfixations, a lot. I have a hard time actually sitting around to writing a lot of the time. Then, when I actually do get inspired I’ll start writing, blink, and it’s suddenly 5 hours in the future and I have a finished chapter. That doesn’t sound like a problem, but it is when you forget that time exists. 

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Okay so I do this a lot, apparently. Often, I’ll either have the other language not even written directly, but have the character (whose pov it is) recognise that it’s not something they can understand, at least establish that the other character is talking. But if the character can understand that language (like in The Hunt with elven, or Wine, Blood or Paint / A Dove’s Dance with Wolves with Russian/Italian) the dialogue is written in italics (but English). Though that gets a little bit confusing when they’re speaking both in that language and also on the phone (I put phone dialogue in italics too) so if it’s both, I bold and italics it lmao. 

As for actually writing the other language, I try to avoid it. I only speak English and a tiny bit of French, so I try not to presume like I can accurately portray other languages. Like, the furthest I’ll go with it is a noun as in like a pet name or title, or just tiny snippets of dialogue. To do that, I’ll usually use good ol’ google translate - or, if I know someone that has knowledge of that language, I’ll go to them for help! It’s not the end of the world if it’s wrong, but I’d rather it be at least a good effort.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

I think I might’ve wrote a tiny bit of Avatar the Last Airbender when I was a kid, but I never wrote more than a few paragraphs. After that, Naruto. I was very big into Naruto as a teenager, and yet only ever properly finished one fic? No, I’m not linking it lmao. Yes, it’s still out there on the internet. After Naruto I fell into Dragon Age and stayed there for years, only actually stopping when I started writing for Cyberpunk in December.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Ooooh that’s a tough one. That changes a lot depending on how much fun I’m having with something while writing it, honestly. I like my fics for different reasons, honestly. I think lately my favourite is When in Rome, because it’s the thing I’ve been writing most recently. I also adore my 2003 series, and yes I’m saying the whole series because I think of it as one cohesive thing. 2078 ofc because it’s the thing that got me into writing Cyberpunk and I met a lot of friends through it, but I’d definitely do it differently nowadays so the fic is more just nostalgic haha. And, ofc, The Hunt has a special place in my heart because I’ve been writing it for so long.

The most popular Naruto ships on FF.Net

Now, that’s a deceptively easy question… It’s very difficult to find the answer.

FF.Net doesn’t have a built-in ranking system (in contrast to AO3). The only way to search the popularity is to scroll through the Filter Menu. One would need to chose Character A, click the Pairing Option On, and then scroll through all the possible Character Bs, checking the number of fics as it appears in the lower part of Filter Menu.

The point is that there are 324 characters listed in Naruto Filter (if I counted correctly). If one would want to search all the combinations, one would need to check (324x324)/2 i.e. 52488 combinations of characters. Well, there are better ways to spend time.

The approach I took was the following:

1.      I identified Top Ten most popular Characters through scrolling through all the characters (Pairing Option was Off at this stage) and taking note of their fic numbers. There are 49 characters that have more than 1000 fics to their name, and those characters will be considered further. Top Ten were (in order of popularity): Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura, Hinata, Itachi, Kakashi, Gaara, Neji, Ino, Shikamaru

2.      For each of the Top Ten characters I switched the Pairing Option On and scrolled through all the listed Character Bs, taking note of the ships with more than 100 fics. This way, I systematically checked all possible ships where at least one partner belonged to Top Ten.

At that point it should become apparent for everyone that here lies the greatest limitation of this method. Namely, there can be a ship, consisting of both partners outside the Top Ten that nevertheless is popular enough to rank high.

Therefore:

3.      Since I wasn’t ready to search systematically through further characters, I concentrated on ships featuring characters ranking 11-49 that struck me as possibly popular (canon pairs, Akatsuki teams, fandoms favs known to me) and checked manually the fic numbers for those fics. This check was by all means not exhaustive and was obviously biased.

Limitations of the method

The biggest limitation of this method is described in point 2., and the partial solution provided in point 3.

Additionally, this method is based exclusively on Pairing Option. Pairing Option was introduced in October 2013 and fics tagged with it tend to be new. The parallel ship tagging system (so called Ship Names, i.e. SasuSaku, NaruHina, etc.) was in place for the majority of the Naruto fandom history on FF.Net and is still widely in use. For more details see here. This analysis doesn’t include in any way the fics tagged with Ship Names (and the differences in rankings between the systems can be large; for example featuring Sakura’s ships see here).

Results

The Table below summarizes 42 ships that I identified applying approach described in point 2 and supplementing it with approach from point 3. This list is not exhaustive and I am pretty sure there are couple of ships towards the bottom of the ranking that slipped through my fingers.

Ships identified via point 3. are marked red. Those ships are: MinaKushi, SasoDei, BoruSara and MadaTobi. It is worth mentioning that MinaKushi is ranked 10th, and it had I not used the manual check, it’s place would have been taken by ShikaIno, which proves that also relatively high-ranking ships may escape the procedure from point 2.

Since FF.Net lists “Naruko” as separate character, ship Sasuke x Naruko appeared as a separate entity in my method. It has 178 fics and is ranked 28. If one adds those 178 fics to the classical SasuNaru ship, it introduces profound changes in the top of the ranking. Namely, SasuNaru with 4105 fics takes the 2nd place from NaruHina (with 3930 fic), as those two ships have practically identical fic number. Btw, I checked Hinata x Naruko, just to be fair, and since it has 29 fics, it wouldn’t make NaruHina win its 2nd place.

Discussion

The ranking is dominated by ships consisting of four players: Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura and Hinata. Almost all combinations of ships featuring those 4 characters (except of SakuHina) rank at the top of the list. The ships featuring those 4 characters are also the only ones that cross the boundary of 1000 fics per ship.

SasuSaku dominates the ranking with 5826 fics, followed by an almost-tie between NaruHina and SasuNaru with 3930 and 3927 fics, respectively (or the 2nd and 3rd ranks are reversed, see above).

Interestingly, there is a second almost-tie on the 4th and 5th place with NaruSaku (1733 fics) and SasuHina (1728 fics).

There are 23 F/M ships in the ranking, 10 M/M and 1 F/F. 8 ships (with OCs, Kurama and Naruko) are hard to categorize.

In Top Ten there are 4 canonical ships, while the fifth prominent one (InoSai) ranks 13. However, for every canonical ship, the uncanonical ‘options’ for either, or both partners, feature equally prominently and usually on similar place in the ranking (the ‘Top 4 Characters’ situation described above; ShikaTema (7th) vs ShikaIno (11th), InoSai (13th) vs ShikaIno (11th), and SasuIno (12th))

Several ships ranking very highly in AO3 rank low on FF.Net. KakaIru, which is the 2nd most popular ship on AO3 ranks 15 on FF.Net (though it can be an artifact of using exclusively the Pairing Option, I have an impression that this ship used to be far more popular in the past). KakaObi (5th on AO3) is ranked 33. MadaTobi which is ranked 7th on AO3 barely makes the cut.

MadaSaku is 36th, but since it’s towards the end of the ranking, I would treat it more as an orientation than as a set-in-stone number, as there might be a fic or two that I missed that would rank higher.

It is interesting to note that 5 high ranking ships are the ships with OC. The canonical ship-partners in these pairings are: Kakashi, Itachi, Gaara, Sasuke and Naruto.

And finally, the curiosities: there are two ships of Kurama that made it in: with Naruto (ok, I can understand that) and with Itachi (WTF? If anyone read Kurama x Itachi fic, please, let me know what it was about!)
