Oh boy.

No one hits Echo in this episode, but she is physically manhandled a lot and also drugged into unconsciousness so it’s not like she’s having a good or pain-free time. Wouldn’t want that to happen literally ever.

So, Echo has been programmed to lactate and feel maternally bonded to this baby so that this douchey dad guy can have his important man feelings without having to take responsibility for his kid (always convenient when you can just throw a load of money at the problem instead of actually dealing with it, especially when you get some bonus sex out of it, right?) and we’re supposed to run with this incredibly boring pared-down version of what new parenthood and the fabled ‘maternal instinct’ are really like and it’s all, just...so bad. And the fact that Echo’s whole ‘I can remember everything and I want to save everyone from the Dollhouse’ thing feels like proof of what I said early in season one, about how her having her personality wiped after every engagement is NOT what makes her so hard to care about as a lead character. Now she’s never truly losing any of it and she’s self-actualising into ‘Echo’ as a person and not just a blank slate, and it is boring. She has no dynamics as a character, no real personality, and that’s killer, man. She feels more like a blank slate now than she did before, because at least her doll state had an affectation, there was a sense that Eliza Dushku was doing something, even if she was not particularly compelling, and the little moments of memory and recognition felt like they had trajectory. Now she’s just blandly delivering self-aware sentences, and instead of feeling like Echo is grappling with all the complicated pieces of self she has inside, it feels like she’s never been more empty. They’ve fast-tracked straight past the interesting bits - the actual process of developing awareness and the existential musings which could have come with them - and now we’ve just got ‘I want to save everyone’, and there’s nothing interesting about that. That’s the least-dynamic motivation possible, and the only way hero characters normally get away with being that boring is by having literally any other accompanying personality traits or motivations or interests. Echo’s got nothing. She’s just an empty shell.
