i think what people aren't picking up on in the whole djem incident is the fact that not only did rodrigo immediately order juan to kill djem after hinting at it to cesare but also that cesare knew exactly that djem had to die to secure lucrezia's dowry. he was fully aware of the necessity of the political crime and even had a hand in it happening. he mainly refused to let juan use micheletto to carry out the killing purely out of petty rivalry/sibling jealousy. instead he forced juan's hand to kill djem personally and framed it as a "lesson" for the earlier botched attempt at the task assigned by their father. but to cesare it was mostly a calculated move to humiliate his brother and burden him with the psychological weight of his first kill...a defining moment that carved out darkness within juan

#“here endeth the first lesson” gives me chills everytime #that shot where cesare is in the shadow and juan is in the light lives in my head rent free #the way the whole scene also reflects on cesare’s machiavellian manipulative nature as well which is delicious #cesare: no juan i won't let you use my obedient dog find your own !!#it takes me out that he weaponized even necessary political crime to weaken juan and solidify his superiority in their rivalry #also the way oakes portrayed juan's fear and guilt was palpable #the borgias #tb text post
