[EN] In my last post, I mentioned how beautiful it is where I live. And truly — walking these paths every day, I’m beginning to appreciate it more than ever.

It makes for a perfect setting to celebrate the holidays of spring and rebirth. And speaking of which… let me tell you a story.

A long time ago, back when people still remembered the names of the old gods and goddesses, one among them was worshipped with special reverence — Ostara, the lady of spring, of life, and of rebirth.

She brought light after the long winter darkness, awakened sleeping seeds, called the first flowers through melting snow, and with her touch, she melted ice and chased away the clouds.

It was said that Ostara would wander the earth at the turn of winter into spring, carrying warmth, sunlight, and forgiveness. Her presence was quiet but unmistakable — birdsong in the air, budding leaves, and the gentle glow of morning light.

One year, when winter refused to loosen its grip, Ostara came upon a tiny bird lying in the snow. It was shivering with cold, its wings frozen stiff, unable to fly. Its little heart was still beating, but barely — on the verge of giving up.

The goddess stopped, knelt beside it, and gently took it in her hands. She knew that true spring would not arrive in time, that the lingering frosts of night would be fatal to a creature so fragile.

But she was a goddess — she could do something.

And so, out of compassion and love, Ostara transformed the bird into a hare. In its new form, it could run fast, dig warm burrows, and find food even beneath the snow. It was stronger now, more resilient. It would survive.

Yet this was no ordinary transformation — Ostara left it one gift from its former life: the ability to lay eggs.

The hare, now a creature of the earth, would — each year at the time of the spring equinox, at the return of Ostara — lay colorful eggs and hide them in grass, beneath bushes, among blooming flowers. They were gifts for children, but also symbols of hope, of new life, and of returning light.

And so, in gratitude, the hare carried on the memory of the goddess who had saved it in its time of greatest need.

With the passing of centuries, people remembered the tale in fragments — the Easter Bunny remained, not as some mascot of marketing, but as a messenger of spring. A memory of love and transformation that saves.

[PL] Wspominałem już wczoraj, że jest ładnie tu gdzie mieszkam. I to jest piękna oprawa do świąt związanych z wiosną i odrodzeniem. A skoro tak to opowiem wam historię.

Dawno, dawno temu, w czasach, gdy ludzie jeszcze pamiętali imiona starych bogów i bogiń, wśród nich czczono Ostārę – panią wiosny, życia i odrodzenia. Przynosiła świat��o po długich zimowych ciemnościach, budziła śpiące nasiona, wypuszczała pierwsze kwiaty spod śniegu, a jej dotyk topił lód i rozganiał chmury.

Mówiono, że Ostara wędrowała po świecie na przełomie zimy i wiosny, niosąc ze sobą ciepło, słońce i przebaczenie. Jej obecność była cicha, lecz zauważalna – śpiew ptaków, pierwsze listki, delikatne promienie porannego światła.

Pewnego roku, kiedy zima wyjątkowo długo nie chciała odejść, Ostara znalazła w śniegu małego ptaszka. Drżał z zimna, skrzydła miał zamarznięte, nie mógł odlecieć. Jego drobne serce biło jeszcze, ale było bliskie poddania się.

Bogini zatrzymała się, uklękła przy nim, i łagodnie wzięła go w dłonie. Wiedziała, że nie zdąży nadejść prawdziwa wiosna, że nocne mrozy wciąż będą zabójcze dla tak kruchego stworzenia.

Ale była przecież boginią – mogła coś zrobić. I wtedy, z litości i miłości, Ostara zamieniła ptaszka w zajączka. Dzięki nowej formie mógł szybko biegać, kopać norki i znaleźć pożywienie nawet pod warstwą śniegu. Był silniejszy, bardziej odporny. Mógł przeżyć.

Jednak nie była to zwykła przemiana – Ostara zostawiła mu dar z poprzedniego życia: zdolność znoszenia jajek.

Zając, teraz już część świata ssaków, co roku w czasie równonocy wiosennej – w czasie powrotu Ostary – znosił kolorowe jajka i chował je w trawie, pod krzewami, między kwiatami. Były to dary dla dzieci, ale też symbol nadziei, nowego życia i powrotu światła. W ten sposób wdzięczny zajączek niósł dalej pamięć o bogini, która uratowała go w chwili największej potrzeby.

I tak, z biegiem wieków, w opowieściach ludzi pozostał zajączek wielkanocny – nie jako przypadkowa postać z reklam, ale jako posłaniec wiosny, pamięć o miłości i przemianie, która ocala.

Moon Tree 

This one took me a while to work on; originally it started out as a sketch where I wanted to combine nature and space to create a surreal, fantasy image. I spent a lot of time finding the right colours as I wanted to keep it minimal and focus on the shapes of the rocks and branches.
