Finished this just in time for the new trailer drop! This is my Mononoke illustration featuring assorted merch from the anime, movie, and stage play! How many can you recognize? ⚖️👹

👁️Overview 

Late last year, I rather belatedly discovered Mononoke’s 15th anniversary came and went, and with it, an entire swath of new content to manically pore over. This is an illustration of the various Mononoke merchandise, props, and set dressing I discovered.

🔎Scope

Some fun facts regarding the work that went into this illustration!

Not including research time, this project ran for roughly two months, consuming much of my waking hours outside of my full time and freelance jobs.

While the illustration does not depict all of my findings, it does feature over 120 unique props and set dressings!

The majority of the props and set dressing were modeled to varying degrees of detail in SketchUp.

To model prep, I often put together schematics on Photoshop or Illustrators. Some were created from scratch. Others were created with the liberal usage of the Photoshop transform and perspective warp function. 

The master file is 1.5GB. The dimensions are 6400x3600 at 300 dpi, and contains over 2,200 layers. 

Near the end of production, the master file became so unwieldy I created a separate working file. This way, I could create assets lag-free then import the layers into the master file.

🗳️3D Layout

As you can see, the backbone of this illustration is the 3D model. I spent perhaps 30-40% of my production time on this stage.

And this is the lit version. The lighting ultimately got downplayed in favor of showcasing the vibrant colors. I like how simple it looks though!

🎬Production-Based Set Dressing

In addition to merchandise, I wanted to insert set dressing and props from the various Mononoke productions. 

🦊Kusuriuri

It’s odd to have a section dedicated just to him, but his unique appearance warrants it. His garb and overall appearance is an amalgam of the anime and movie. The original intent was ambiguity– kind of like the blue/black vs. yellow/white dress phenomena a few years back. But after doing the color flats, I rather liked how the rich, unaltered colored fit with the overall composition so it became more blatant. I’m surprised that nobody has commented on this since I published the illustration. Maybe because I didn’t feature him in a close-up?

🐈 kai ~Ayakashi~Bake Neko (2006)

Finding props iconic to this story arc (outside of the Kusuriuri’s tools of trade, of course) was somewhat difficult. While the environment was richly decorated, it mainly consisted of 2D artwork which I wasn’t keen on retracing. I opted to paint objects that characters interacted with or featured heavily in the show.

☂️Mononoke: Karakasa (2024)

Pretty slim pickings for the new movie since I only had the teaser, first trailer, and movie poster to reference from. Kusuriuri’s tools of trade were a given, but finding memorable and narratively significant objects was a tad troublesome.

Thankfully, the set dressing ended up (however subconsciously) strikingly similar to the movie’s environment design, down to the green tatami and multicolor shoji screen. I suppose at this point I was so immersed in Mononoke content that its aesthetics subconsciously informed my design choices!

Agency Assignments: A comprehensive to-do list for saving Dead Boy Detectives!

I'm very easily overwhelmed, so I wanted to break down all the ways to help "Save Dead Boy Detectives" that I have seen floating around. This is meant to be something you can reference when you feel like there is so much you need and want to do to help, but don't know how or where to start.

Note: I will be updating this post as we go when necessary, so feel free to bookmark it in your browser for easy access, add it to your homepage, whatever! I'll always have a link to it in my Pinned Navigation post on my blog as well!

It is of the utmost importance that we fight as an organized, well-informed front. We need to be on the same page if we're going to save our show, so let's get into it! 💜💀🔎

➪ First and foremost, follow @savethedeadboys! They're going to be our best resource during this fight.

➪ Next, follow @deadboyagency for news and updates: they've been around since the show dropped and have been an invaluable source of information the entire time.

Now for some task breakdowns:

"One-Time" Tasks

➪ Like the header says, these things can only be done once. Once you do them, you don't have to give them any space in your mind.

Sign the petition*

Review & Rate Dead Boy Detectives on Google, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes. Be sure on IMDB you don't just rate the show as a whole, but you also rate each individual episode! You can also "Like" the show on Google and click "Watched" which helps the show's engagement scores. (If there are other popular sites I haven't listed here, feel free to share them and rate Dead Boy Detectives highly on them!)

Notify Netflix customer service (through their online chat feature) that you're unhappy with the cancelation of Dead Boy Detectives. This is a short, 5-minute task that I wrote a guide on (with an example message) here!

"Repeat" Tasks:

➪ These tasks can become a part of your daily routine; do what works best for you! You don't have to do every single one of these tasks every day if that is overwhelming!

Share the petition* over and over again, on every one of your socials! Make everyone you love sign it!

Stream Dead Boy Detectives!* Keep it on a loop in the background on low volume as much as possible. Try to get others to stream it as well, especially if they haven't watched it before! Netflix cares about VIEWS: views save shows and I broke down the reasoning here. (Bonus: if you post over on Twitter about your rewatch, use the tag #ReviveDeadBoyDetectives)

Talk about Dead Boy Detectives!* You're probably doing that already, but just be sure that you're tagging your posts. Here on Tumblr use the "Dead Boy Detectives" tag at least (to boost our tag to trending) and anywhere that uses hashtags (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram for example) I would recommend #SaveDeadBoyDetectives and #DeadBoyDetectives as those seem to be the most commonly used tags! IMPORTANT: do not use more than 20 tags here on Tumblr! Any more than 20 and your posts might be marked as spam and hidden from the tags!

Create art, edits for TikTok, fics, gif sets, doodles, crafts, analysis posts, and so on for Dead Boy Detectives.* Having fun is important, too! This is an extension of the "Talk about Dead Boy Detectives" point, but it needs to be stated - don't remove the joy from the fight. If a drawing of our boys or a smutty fic with your favorite trickster cat king is what you can bring to the fight on any given day, that is a perfectly valuable contribution! It's not all emails and hashtags.

Daily request a show through Netflix. Bonus if you're signed in! (I do 3-5 times a day)

Send Emails advocating for Dead Boy Detectives (Email list & Email Template). You can do this as much as you want or just one time.

Send Snail-mail (physical letters) to Netflix advocating for Dead Boy Detectives. I also send a copy of my letters to Warner Bros. Studios. Again, you can do this one time or multiple times. There are dates set aside for "mass" mail sending as well, so check out info on that here!

Interact with articles posted about Dead Boy Detectives. Read them, share them, comment on them, thank the writer for writing them, etc. We want lots of press about the cancellation, and supporting journalists and publications will make them want to write about Dead Boy Detectives more.

NOTE: Anything marked with a * means it's extremely important; if you can only do a few things, these tasks are the ones that you should focus on first. Remember to take care of yourself. This is a marathon, not a sprint, so don't burn yourself out!

Ask & You Shall Receive…

Summary: Tim Rockford and Neurodivergent!OFC are brought together while attempting to solve a rather puzzling murder case. As Tim and OFC work more closely with one another to find their suspect, the line between them blurs, creating a complex dynamic between the two as they both try to navigate their evolving relationship, the demands of the case, and their safety. There will be smut and given that they are solving a murder case, it will have darker themes relating to that.

Hello my lovelies,

As you know, I’ve been kicking this idea around in my ole brain for a bit. I was torn between writing it with Tim or Javi P. Well, per our discussions and your voting, the consensus is that we need both. So, with that said, Tim is up first. No ETA yet as I’m still planning, but I wanted to share an update and give you a chance to get on the tag list so you do not miss it.

I’m not yet sure if this will be a oneshot or have a few parts. We shall see, but if you’ve been with me thus far, you know how I am. I do plan for this to be written in my usual style with alternating POVs.

Our neurodivergent!OFC will be high functioning and seen as being a bit quirky and misunderstood by her coworkers. Tim, however, gets it. He knows what’s going on without being told and becomes her biggest supporter. Going so far as to ask for her to be on his high priority case after not making any headway as the body count rises. They will have a bit of an odd dynamic at first, but he puts in the effort to learn and earns her trust.

📝 Snippet:

I stood staring at the messy board, having trouble focusing because of the disorganized mess of pinned documents. There did not appear to be any rhyme or reason to it. The only thing I could think about was ripping everything down and putting it all back up in a way that made sense. When instead, I should be focused on what it all meant and how the pieces fit together.

Then I realized it didn’t make sense because they had no direction. No suspects. No real evidence that pointed to a motive. They were completely lost.

My attention was drawn to the incessant buzzing of the harsh fluorescent light above, making my left eye twitch. I glanced up at it in annoyance, now realizing it was making me anxious as I closed my eyes and rubbed at the bridge of my nose. I could feel Tim and Tony’s expectant stares, like they were waiting for me to pull the answer out of my ass based on the mess of haphazard materials they had gathered. The thought made the twitching worse.

My eyes fluttered open and were drawn to Tim, who was looking at me with furrowed brows. He scanned my face before shifting his gaze upward toward the ceiling. Without a word, he turned, flipping on the desk lamp beside him. Then moved across the room to switch on the tall floor lamp before turning the overhead fluorescents off.

“The fuck you doing?” Tony asked.

Tim gave him a pointed look, “I’m getting a headache. Deal with it.”

Tim’s gaze was back on me as my nervous system felt instant relief. His lips pursed slightly, eyes squinting as examined the subtle changes in my tense posture. There seemed to be a hint of a smile as he reached to rub at his bottom lip before turning to shuffle through the files on his desk.

Does he know?

I’m excited to explore the relationship between these two under very stressful circumstances. It’s going to be a ride. Nestled on its own secluded acres at 45 Hitchcock Lane, Millbrook, it stands as a monument to intrigue and legacy. This estate, shrouded in whispers of past triumphs and solved mysteries, was once both the home and workplace of the renowned retired detective, Carlos Pinocchio.

— Boots, scuffed and worn, shuffled across the creaking floorboards toward a window obscured by a makeshift curtain—a faded, mismatched tablecloth. Calloused hands gripped the fabric and tore it down with a flourish, allowing sunlight to stream in. The light caught motes of dust, illuminating the shabby office like a hazy spotlight on a forgotten stage.

— The declaration hung in the air, just long enough to feel triumphant—until the desk let out a foreboding crack. The desk collapsed into two uneven, splintered halves, leaving the would-be leader sprawled amidst the wreckage.

Free money Scam / Sugar Baby explanation Does an offer of free money seem too good to be true? Is someone asking you to be their sugar baby? It's definitely a scam.

Art commission scam / v2: They're changed the script Also known as the Instagram Art Commission Scam. Usually started by being asked to draw 'my son/daughter and/or their pet'. May now be started by asking to draw cartoon/anime characters.

Recovery scam Did you recently post about getting scammed? Did someone contact you via ask/DM's saying they could help? Did they claim they were a hacker? They're a scammer. Read this.

profoundcollectionangel / supportgazalady / perfectlythoughtfulbanana A scammer pretending to be Palestinian asking for Insulin. They use multiple accounts with the same story asking for PayPal donations under various usernames.

shaaaliminneedofinsulin + veemiraclettastemaker Two scams ran by the same person pretending to be Palestinian asking for Insulin. Evidence seen from use of the same PayPal.me account used on both.

gladysconnoisseurpost Yet another scammer pretending to be Palestinian asking for Insulin. This one even links to the 'my cat sleepy' scam.

foggyhottubpost A pair of scam accounts that are identical. claims to be Palestinian, claims to be vetted. Asks for Insulin. Run by the same scammer as myavenuesheep/eunice-2-magwerl. -----
