March Reading

I read a lot of books this month, and had great luck with how much I enjoyed them! Favourites are bolded.

Brute: Stories of Dark Desire, Masculinity & Rough Trade - ed. Steve Berman

A collection of dark erotica stories about queer men: a variety of horror, thriller, and character studies. Some didn't entirely land for me as they were just a bit too gruesome for me to entirely enjoy, but I did love 'Dark, Firm, and Dry' by Rien Gray, 'Dick Pig' by Ian Muneshwar, and 'The Boy Who Went Forth To Learn What Fear Was by LC Von Hessen'; 'Suitcase Sam' by Tom Cardamone was horrific enough to disturb me afterwards. There were a few trans guy protagonists but amid a lot of lovingly-described gigantic cis men, trans men didn't get described as objects of desire; it made me realise how much I'd like to read more erotica or steamy romance where a trans man is written in the lavish/idealised/thirsty way a lot of the cis men were in this collection. It was also interesting that most of the protagonists were strongly submissive; it's sparked off a lot of offline conversations about erotic fiction and depictions of kink therein, and my own thoughts about how I write erotic scenes (though I don't consider what I write intensely kinky). I'd enjoy writing more about this subject but I'm not sure Tumblr is the place for it; maybe a blogpost one day?

Love Kills Twice - Rien Gray

I adored this high-heat F/NBi romantic suspense book. The characters were hot and appealing, with a lot of substance and groundedness to them along with it. The plot was tight and I devoured the whole thing at top speed. Much recommended!

The Salt Path - Raynor Winn

A memoir about a fifty-year-old farmer and her husband who became homeless and walked England's South West Coast Path. Powerful and evocative in places: I enjoyed it, though some of the descriptions and dialogue of the people encountered melted into one another a bit. I'm realising that I rather like these people-hit-rock-bottom-and-walk-in-the-wilderness-about-it books. They always inspire me to look outward and get outdoors, albeit in a lower-key way.

The Eye in the Door - Pat Barker (reread)

This was quite nostalgic for me, because I read it a long time ago (before the first in the series, actually). I like elements of it more than Regeneration - getting to know Billy Prior better, the city scenes, depiction of queerness and homophobia beyond what Siegfried Sassoon talks about in Regeneration, some of the socialist politics and class consciousness - but the main plot hadn't fully stuck with me. I think I see why: there are several long sequences that I found hard to focus on, and some of it is a bit strange, veering into depictions of multiple-personality-disorder that have been pretty debunked nowadays. Still, I enjoyed revisiting it. The sense that William Rivers is on the verge of breakdown feels palpable and gripping.

Love Bleeds Deep - Rien Gray

Justine and Campbell are on a not-so-idyllic not-exactly-honeymoon in France, growing accustomed to life together and the combination of enjoying a private life and Campbell's deadly occupation. This doesn't shy away from the psychological damage both leads have suffered, while also showing exactly how much they mean to each other. Again I loved it just as much as the first one.

Love Burns Bright - Rien Gray

So many romance books focus on the sexy getting-together part, and sequels don't always keep the spark going. But this series is so good for that and for keeping the emotional connections between the gorgeous characters. In this one, we meet Justine's family, which is already fraught as Justine wasn't in a position to be in touch with them for a long time - but things soon get complicated. I loved it.

A Love So Dark - Rien Gray

Such a good finale for an amazing dark queer romance series! The relationship between Justine and Campbell is beautifully drawn and as hot as ever - no weird misunderstandings or other relationship-drama nonsense - but their situation is anything but settled as some consequences from earlier books come back to haunt them. What a fantastic series this is! Some of the books I've read about nonbinary characters treat them as learning opportunities, or as nice best friends, or as a vehicle for positive rep, and I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a fully-formed, hot, flawed, adult nonbinary character making their way through excellent thriller plots. I love Campbell and Justine and I'm sorry to see them go, but it was an amazing ride with them.

Valerin the Fair - Rien Gray

A beautifully-written fantasy novella, the first in the Out of True series about sapphic knights. The details are so lovely - they remind me of what I loved about the prose style in Spear by Nicola Griffith - and the intimate scenes are stunning. You can download this for free, so if this sounds like your cup of tea, do give it a look!

Bitten and turned by a vampire long since perished, when he was at the ripe age of 48, Ciaran has wandered the Earth for a time longer than most people find possible to even imagine. Cursed to walk alone forever, or so he thinks, he pushes away anyone who tries to get close, believing that they will be in mortal peril if they so much as befriend him.

I'm looking for ideally a Male or Nonbinary character to play alongside this Masculine Nonbinary character, but I'll consider Female characters too for Ciaran, for a modern with supernatural plot. Give me fellow vampires, werewolves, the undead, selkies, shapeshifters/changelings! I'd love to find him a Werewolf to play against to teach him how to love and find companionship after 1200 years of loneliness, and maybe we could introduce some omegaaverse shenanigans in there too if that is a thing you also enjoy.

PROFESSOR LEON RITTER [FC: Michael Sheen in Good Omens] - a literature professor - has newly moved to [city of our choosing] from Berlin. He's looking for a few things, chief amongst them for his past to stop following him around. He's a simple man who lives for writing and his books, as well as his pet Chihuahua, Betty. He seeks solace in stories... And sometimes in the darker corners of the city's streets and parks, too.

I'm looking for Male or Masculine Nonbinary characters to play alongside this Cis Male character. This plot is more grounded in reality than the previous, and has no supernatural or fantasy elements, (unless we decide to do something like modern omegaverse? IDK, I am open to that though!) I'd quite like to go one of two ways with him - a younger person, maybe a mature student in his classes, finds out what he does at night and at the weekends, simply by coincidence because they're also out cruising and cottaging, too. Or alternatively someone to calm him down and make him take care of himself for once.

A former thief, Darian Vernworth is one of the New Boiling Isles’ Coven Heads, specifically as the new leader of the Illusion Coven. He is also a basilisk, who once relied on heavy evasion to avoid the Emperor’s Coven for ~30 years, after their raid at his former home. Most of his knowledge is solely based on human books bought from a market, especially the engineering ones. It helped him develop his signature tail prosthetic.

While Adrian threw his identity as a basilisk out the window, Darian did not.

Part of this activity was suggested by Adrian, because he was tired of eating the same food.

When the Emperor’s Coven invaded their territory, both Darian and Adrian accidentally separated each other during a fight. The older basilisk hid inside a cave and casted an illusion over it to hide his spot from the Emperor’s Coven.

However, Darian was more concerned about where Adrian fled: when the coast was clear, he looked everywhere for the younger twin, but couldn’t find him in the end.

Until he heard the sound of airships flying over head.

It was then that Darian planned to follow them to facilities operated by the Emperor’s Coven under the illusory disguise of a coven scout.

For several times, he tried to free all of the captured basilisks (some were successful, such as letting III, IV, and Vee escape), but kept getting caught by coven forces. One day, when he came back for a soon-to-be-last attempt, Darian was shocked to see the rest of the basilisks(even Adrian) missing from every facility. Instead of fleeing, Darian got into a fight with coven forces out of fury, believing they have eliminated the basilisks for good. During the fight, one of the coven members managed to cut his tell via firing a spell at Darian.

Expecting to be on a wanted poster, he fled back to the same empty cave he hid in during his first escape from the coven. It would eventually become the basilisk’s secluded hideout for the next ~30 years.

During those ~30 years, Darian became an elusive cryptid who raided markets and stores at night for his survival supply (and hid the mess under an illusion). Moreover, Darian was searching for a tail replacement, as the original was lost to the raid years ago.

But there was a market that stood out to Darian’s interest: one that sells “human treasures.” He will eventually buy a book on human engineering that will help him make a prosthetic for his missing tail. This goal led to an improvement of his evasion (and illusion) skills, as he did this on a daily basis. He also created handmade weapons back at his cave for additional support (plus casting illusion magic over his projectiles to speed up the damage).

Did I also mention that the earring Darian wears is part of a concealment stone he stole from a market? The earring amplified his magic, while the concealment stone transformed the basilisk into a witch that bears a striking resemblance to Adrian (he had to get a cloak to avoid raising suspicion).

From here, Darian frequently used this disguise for his next heists, which will eventually catch Adrian Graye’s (the Head of the Illusion Coven during this time) interest. This will become a test for Darian’s evasion skills honed over time.

It was a perfectly normal reunion that did not end in a wanted poster after an argument of conflicting ideas between the twins.

After the Day of Unity, Abomination magic has been looked down upon due to the Blight Industries’ contribution to the horrific event. As a result, many demanded an alternative to abomination prosthetics (Belos loyalists preferred to stick to this option, though). As a result, Darian became the last member to be appointed to the Titan’s Council: he wanted to take a chair because, being the arrogant engineer he is, wishes to show off his mechanical knowledge to the rest of the New Boiling Isles. With that, he brought up the idea of illusion prosthetics, by left space for abomination-engineered ones for witches who preferred to gain accessibility with the latter.

In addition, Darian’s position allowed him to make friends, especially a young prankster who took the Abomination chair, and have a better lab to move his work into afterwards. Moreover, Darian began to oversee a rising industrial age of his home.

During breaks, the basilisk makes visiting arrangements for his twin when they both have the chance together. They try to piece back their relationship slowly, even though Adrian is hesitant due to their argument in the past. Darian also took on a new activity that involves performing stunts.

During Duels: Although he is an engineer, Darian has shown front-line competency with illusions. As previously implied, he is very evasive and athletic. In other words, he is more active in battle than Adrian.

His prosthetic tail is his signature weapon: it can shapeshift into various weapons, such as a mace, and his most notable is the head of a basilisk. The tail can also grab (onto) objects, either for protection or leaping across a platform.

However, Darian’s tail also serves as a weakness: it is easily vulnerable when extended at great lengths, as an opponent can grab a part of the tail. A common consequence is Darian being tangled by his own tail.

He uses his earring that functions similarly to Adrian’s, only that the former acts as a monocle and the lens has a larger shape. But, Darian upgraded it to cast miniature illusions of various blueprints and figures.

Darian is best described as a streetwise quick-thinker. He relies on observation in order to make his next move to overcome difficulties. Moreover, the basilisk has good photographic memory.

Although the size of his ego is smaller than Adrian’s, Darian does have a tendency to show off his inventions in an arrogant and dramatic manner. That’s why he took the Illusion chair of the Titan’s Council.

Darian likes to be detailed with his notes, but it can get confusing.

• Sonore Skual: The captain of the Demon Realm Expedition drags Darian to provide better defense for his ships. Additionally, Sonore is often tasked to keep an eye on Darian, who would wander off and come back with stolen items packed away in bags attached to his belt. This is a case during their travels to the Human Realm.

• Loopy Crulle: Darian is an honorary “Crulle” to her, otherwise they share one sibling-like brain cell. These Coven Heads love pulling pranks at each other, but Darian hates being outsmarted by the clown (he is the Head Illusionist, and “should be the one that outsmarts her!”).

Cursed to walk alone forever, or so he thinks, he pushes away anyone who tries to get close, believing that they will be in mortal peril if they so much as befriend him.

I'm looking for ideally a Male or Nonbinary character to play alongside this Masculine Nonbinary character, but I'll consider Female characters too for Ciaran, for a modern with supernatural plot. Give me fellow vampires, werewolves, the undead, selkies, shapeshifters/changelings! I'd love to find him a Werewolf to play against to teach him how to love and find companionship after 1200 years of loneliness, and maybe we could introduce some omegaaverse shenanigans in there too if that is a thing you also enjoy.

PROFESSOR LEON RITTER [FC: Michael Sheen in Good Omens] - a literature professor - has newly moved to [city of our choosing] from Berlin. He's looking for a few things, chief amongst them for his past to stop following him around. He's a simple man who lives for writing and his books, as well as his pet Chihuahua, Betty. He seeks solace in stories... And sometimes in the darker corners of the city's streets and parks, too.

I'm looking for Male or Masculine Nonbinary characters to play alongside this Cis Male character. This plot is more grounded in reality than the previous, and has no supernatural or fantasy elements, (unless we decide to do something like modern omegaverse? IDK, I am open to that though!) I'd quite like to go one of two ways with him - a younger person, maybe a mature student in his classes, finds out what he does at night and at the weekends, simply by coincidence because they're also out cruising and cottaging, too. Or alternatively someone to calm him down and make him take care of himself for once.

I really, REALLY want to keep their face claims as is. I don't enjoy playing gym bunnies or most models, and want to keep their approx ages as they are also. It's the one thing I'm really inflexible on this time around folks, sorry if you're not a GO fan I guess!

Let me just say that this book was absolutely incredible and definitely a book that I could see myself rereading. When I read this book, I had just come off the high of reading Babel by R.F. Kuang and I needed another dark book without being horror… and boy did this deliver.

I fully suggest this book for anyone who loved Mulan but wants a more adult version. Please be sure to check the trigger warnings as there are many graphic and dark parts to this book.

Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan Thoughts

I usually hesitate to read socio-realism books. In my honest opinion, most Filipino media is oversaturated with socio-realism. To justify the existence and purpose of an artform in a country where arts are looked down upon, Filipino artists often resort to socio-realism. I'm not saying socio-realism is a bad genre but as a consumer I'm getting tired of seeing it. I just want some variety ya know?

Smaller and Smaller Circles is dubbed as the first crime novel in the Philippines and it obviously sits in the socio-realism genre. The book follows two Jesuit priests as the NBI (the National Bureau of Investigation) assigns them to investigate the mysterious murders of young boys in Payatas.

What I love about this book is that it doesn't feel like a commentary first and a fiction seconds. Batacan incorporated both the socio-realism and fiction elements to create an entertaining yet interesting peek at the issues of the Philippines.

The priests feel like genuinely engaging characters rather than blank slates. Father Saenz and Jerome are the Sherlock Holmes and John Watson the Philippines needed. I would love to read investigating other mysteries. Most characters, although appearing in a scene or two stood out because of their quirky personalities. They feel like people I could talk to in the street.

My favorite character is Ben Arcinas. His redemption is beautiful, from an attention-seeking lawyer to a more cooperative worker, able to work with Saenz and Jerome. I love reading scenes where he is in. The character I least liked is Joanna. She is spunky and sharp but she doesn't stand out to me. Another character who I least like is the serial killer himself but I'm not gonna spoil.

I feel I can't enjoy this book without overlooking the reality that is reflected in the story and in real life. The book has a way of testing my empathy and biases about the country I live in. I relate more with the priests and the priviledged characters in the story rather than the boys who were murdered. We get glimpses of the boys' lives when they lived which aids to the tragedy. The NBI doesn't want to waste their time investigating the serial murders because of the boys' economic status.

I want to see people create fun fanart and fanfiction of this book but it simultaneously feels wrong.

The dreariness of the story and reality ironically made the two protagonists stand out even more. In a country of incompetent government officials and law enforcers, Father Saenz and Jerome stand out as a shining light amidst the darkness. They are the people whom I wish exist in real life. Although Batacan shows the deep-seatedo corruption in institutions such as the church and the NBI, I find this story very optimistic in its lense. Characters like Arcinas could be better people and a predator like Father Ramirez could be served justice. If it weren't for Director Lastimosa, the case wouldn't even be touched by the NBI.

At the end, everything in the story ties up into a neat little bow, a far cry from reality.

BTW, I haven't seen the movie yet and from the trailers, it doesn't match the imagined vibes of the book. And Father Emil is a sweetie.

Life Lately — Entry # 01

Another month is about to end. My life hasn’t really been that exciting since I spend most of my days at home doing the same routine. I dread about waking up every day dealing with the same boring stuff but I do try to make the most out of these free time I have.

I finally forced started learning Korean on my own. I downloaded Talk to Me in Korean (Books 1-10) and other reading materials for beginners. I find it hard to focus on most days and I beat myself up to it. I still get confused between 오, 우, 어. I discovered an app that helps with the pronunciation and works as a dictionary and a reviewer for TOPIK too! If you’re self-studying the Korean language, try the Naver Dictionary from Naver Corp. It’s easy to use and the pronunciation were pretty decent unlike Duolingo’s. It has audio clips, Korean lessons with K-drama, word of the day, TOPIK Vocab, a few of its features. You can also save or bookmark words so you can review it again. The app is kinda hard to navigate though, so I hope they do something about the interface.

I finished a lot of K-Dramas and Films. I’m planning to review some and post it here. My watchlist keeps growing and I don’t have the mental capacity to watch everything all at once. So I’m slowly watching the old ones first when I don’t find the new dramas worth watching- yet. Here are the dramas I was able to finish and due for a review:

Taxi Driver - the one with Lee Je-Hoon. I stopped watching this (probably around ep 12 or 13 when it got boring) and decided to pick it up again because it’d be a waste to discontinue a drama of Lee Je-Hoon.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo - will definitely post a review about this. I loved this. Made my heart soft.

Cafe Minamdang - I think this is my first Seo In-Guk drama that I finished and actually liked. I tried watching The Master’s Sun but decided to put it off when the story was going nowhere. Also up for a review. I loved this.

Legend of the Blue Sea - I enjoyed this one too! Finally crossed it off of my list.

Hometown Cha Cha Cha - I believe this drama was all the rave when it aired. I had to cool down the hype for a bit to truly enjoy this. Which I did! Cried like a baby.

What I loved about August was spending most of the days at ease even though I was stuck in a loop of routines. The weather was not too hot and I enjoyed the occasional rain. I also spend more time on Tumblr than most of my social accounts. It’s surprising that a lot of people still use it and I found a few interesting blogs for inspiration too. I also deactivated my personal Instagram (I’ll be back but I don’t know when!). I made two side accounts though and I don’t know for what (I guess one is for following all the Hallyu stars while the other one’s for a possible dump account).

I was able to get out of the house for a day and I spent it accompanying my brother to get his nbi. Unfortunately government offices was closed due to a storm (even though it wasn’t raining that day) so we went to Dear Joe at Crosswinds, Tagaytay for a coffee fix before heading home. I ordered their truffle grilled cheese sandwich and iced hazelnut latte while Jan ordered hot white mocha latte. The sandwich was so good I still think about it from time to time. The coffee tastes okay too but nothing extraordinary about it.

August was a good run. We’re half way through September, too. Next thing we know, it’s Christmas. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since that “unfortunate phase” happened to me. It’s a memory I wish to bury. When I think about it, I kept looking for answers as to why I did those things and why was I so delusional for nothing. It was a really bad phase in my life. Glad I was able to overcome and learn from it.I still pray for better days.
