Get to know Evelyn Caddel: Lesbian headcanons

Just some silly little thoughts about Evelyn and her lesbian identity for Lesbian Visibility Day 💚

When she was little and played pretend with her friends (usually ‘mommy and daddy’ type games) she was always more than happy to play the dad. Once she drew a little moustache on her upper lip with an ink fountain pen to complete the role. Her Aunt Marianne blew her top when she saw it and immediately made Evelyn scrub it off.  

Living at her aunt’s pub, which was a watering hole for queers and outcasts in and around Islington, she realised very young that men can court men and women can court women but – at the same time – that it was not accepted by society at all. By the time she was a teenager she had seen plenty of their regular customers being verbally abused and attacked outside the venue, often by the police who arrested male clientele. (For historical reference, the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 repealed the death penalty for homosexual acts but instead created harsh prison terms, you can read about that here.)

Her first real crush was a regular at the pub called Catherine. Catherine was quite a few years older (and very unlucky in love), Evelyn was down hard. Definitely one of those unrequited loves where you are infatuated with the older, cool person who is just way too cool for you and just sees you as a younger sibling/pal. 

Evelyn falls on the scale of soft butch. Growing up her aunt often made her wear skirts and dresses (never trousers). Her first morning at Hogwarts she forgoes the skirt she was given at the sorting ceremony and puts on a pair of tartan, three-quarter breeches. They feel like freedom. 

Seeing queer couples being so out and open at Hogwarts took a bit of adjustment. Everytime a couple walked past her hand in hand or kissed in public she felt the nauseous worry that someone would shout a slur or hurt them but no one ever did, not even the bullies who picked on ‘mudbloods’. 

She doesn’t have to come out to anyone, as non-heterosexual sexuality is completely normal and accepted. However, that does not immediately erase the lifelong anxiety and shame she felt deep inside herself, meaning she ended up crying a little on her first date with Poppy. (If you fancy finding more about the context of that you can read it in chapter one of my fic…)

“By the time she turned 15 she had just accepted she would have a life living in the shadows, her burden to bear; relationships with women confined to dark, private spaces, like her aunt’s pub or more sordid venues. But that was before Professor Fig arrived, before Hogwarts, before meeting Nora Treadwell down by Lower Hogsfield and learning she was a witch with a wife.” ← this is a quote from Chapter Three. 

Sebastian, for example, realised early on in fifth year that Evelyn definitely batted for the other team for a number of reasons, without her even saying a word: One) After a Crossed Wands match Constance Dagworth came over and praised her for how quick she was picking duelling up and she blushed through the entire conversation and couldn’t maintain eye-contact. Two) After her first Herbology lesson she couldn’t stop talking about how pretty Professor Garlick’s hair is (sure hun, just that). Three) she didn’t believe Imelda at all when she mentioned off-hand how loads of girls fancy Professor Sharp.

She is useless around pretty girls. Mind goes blank, no thoughts. A true Lesbian Girlfailure.  

Evelyn doesn’t necessarily have a type, although she does lean more towards femme girls. She can’t resist someone who is completely, unwaveringly passionate and driven about a topic they love (*cough cough* Poppy and beasts *cough cough*). She often thought, if she liked boys, Amit would be a perfect match for her.  

That being said, she is 110% a boob girl.

Your smiling at her and laughing while dancing and the demons girls reaction seems to be the same even though they sometimes step on each others feet

Levi: it's just like this manga I read "the human girl I like is actually a lesbian and is dating my demon sister

Of course I celebrated by crossing off some queer titles from my TBR list! I listened to Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli, Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl by Brianna R. Shrum and Sara Waxelbaum, and Going Bicoastal by Dahlia Adler this month on Audible. My picks had a noticeable but unintentional trend given each of them are YA with Jewish representation, bi/les couples, redheaded MCs or love interests (or maybe not bc Imogen from Imogen, Obviously may be brunette judging by the artwork on the author’s Instagram…?) and 2/3 mention the movie,

which, thank goddess they did because they had me finally get around to watching it.

But this post isn’t about movies, it’s about books. So let’s get into them.

Imogen, Obviously

Imogen is surrounded by queer friends and family but she herself identifies as a straight ally. To show her support, she’s part of Pride Alliance, she loves queer pop culture, and she’s always there for her loved ones. Case in point, she’s also agreed to go along with her recently out best friend, Lili, and the lie she’s told her new, queer college friends about the two of them previously dating. It’s no problem for Imogen. Except when starts to get close with one of said friends, Tessa, and she begins to struggle with withholding the truth from her. She was never with Lili — she’s not even queer. Or is that only partly true?

Opinion: First thing’s first, I’ll say it’s probably best to read this book for yourself rather than listen to the audiobook because there is a lot of texting. I was distracted (and slightly annoyed) by the constant mention of character initials and text timestamps within the narration. Other than that, this book resonated with me since I too was once a closeted bisexual whose sexuality was never once questioned because we were all convinced I was straight (curse comphet). Once it dawned on me I am in fact, not straight, it made so much sense looking back. It’s no surprise I’ve also experienced biphobia since coming out. I couldn’t relate to everything in the book; I’ve never found my own Tessa (I love her character) and I’ve never had a queer circle of my own. None of that stopped me from enjoying the story, however, and I can see this book making an impact on others. Especially the next generation.

Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl

Baby, closeted lesbian, Margo, gets lessons from out-and-proud bisexual, Abbie, on how to “ace” being ✨gay✨ and discovers a new friendship with her experienced mentor, as well as her growing feelings for the girl of her dreams.

TW: Biphobia, homophobia, toxic friendship, gatekeeping, gaslighting, queer and lesbian stereotypes

Opinion: This book was my favorite of the three and I found myself relating a bit to both Margo and Abbie. There’s not much else I can say about it without giving away spoilers but I will say I loved this book and I highly recommend it!

Going Bicoastal

Follow Natalya along two different realities, one where she’s living with her father in New York City and getting to know “the redhead” she’s had her eye on. The other, she’s staying with her mother in Los Angeles and warming up to the intern she shares a desk with at her mother’s place of work.

TW: Self harm, divorce/divorced parents

(Unpopular) Opinion: As a fan of Adler’s Cool for the Summer and Home Field Advantage, not to mention a fan of this concept, I was really excited for this to release. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. While it had potential, I thought it was kind of boring. It seemed to me more care was put into the mentioning of food than the plot. I didn’t develop much of an interest in the characters, either. It was entertaining enough to finish but I wouldn’t personally recommend it. Not over Dahlia’s other works and not over Imogen, Obviously or Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl. However, if you want to, I encourage you to give it a try yourself and develop your own opinion. There are many other good reviews out there for this one. It appears I’m the odd one out, which is fine.

original show 'royally arranged love': princess falls in love with prince ditches mistress and mistress becomes a villain who gets executed by orders of the new king and queen and the royal couple lived happily ever after or something. ( Things in the show cut out a lot of stuff and a lot of the truth from the novel in this universe. The mc never got to read the novel. )

Novel 'the Princesses mistress': a girl was currently watching royally arranged love' but realised she was late for work and in her hurry she died in a car accident, she woke up as the 8 year old version of the mistress from the show now she must get the princess to fall in love with her so she doesn't get executed.

I've reached the editing section of my book and I'm starting to think about what kind of marketing stuff I need to do. My story takes place in a school for superhuman teens, and so I was thinking of holding a contest where the winner gets to have their name and whatever super power they want used in the book. Of course there would be restrictions because I know how people are and I would end up with something ridiculous or inappropriate. Thoughts? I applied for an ARC of this book because it looked right up my alley, but got denied. So I went to pick it up while on vacation, the day it came out. I got the last copy at Books-A-Million and I’m so glad I did!

This wasn’t everyone’s favorite book but in my opinion, it set out what it meant to and it fulfilled what I wanted it for! I didn’t realize there was going to be spice, so I was blushing more than a little while reading this on a family vacation… in public. In a very conservative area of South Carolina. It’s fine. We’re fine. It’s all fine.
