Interview: Refugees & Reformation in 16th-Century Frankfurt
In the 16th century, German cities and territories welcomed thousands of refugees fleeing the religious persecution sparked by the Protestant Reformation. In Strange Brethren: Refugees, Religious Bonds, and Reformation in Frankfurt, 1554-1608, Professor Maximilian Miguel Scholz explores one major destination for refugees—Frankfurt am Main—and underscores how they inspired new religious bonds, religious animosities, and religious institutions. In this interview, James Blake Wiener speaks to him about his title and the unique social climate that pervaded the Hessian city.

JBW: Professor Scholz, thank you so much for speaking with me on behalf of World History Encyclopedia (WHE). When many think of Protestant refugees in the Early Modern Era, their minds usually turn to the plight of Huguenots or Anabaptists. Many of them found refuge in cities like London, Amsterdam, Geneva, and Hamburg. What was it that first attracted you to the history of 16th-century Frankfurt am Main? Moreover, what differentiated Frankfurt am Main from other Protestant cities within the Holy Roman Empire?
MS: Frankfurt hosted thousands of refugees in the 16th century. It still does today! But the city is often overlooked because the documents pertaining to its 16th-century experience of refugee accommodation were destroyed by the U.S. and British militaries in 1944. I wanted to shine new light on Frankfurt’s centrality in the story of Protestant refugees. Frankfurt lay at the center of Germany, which it still does today. It was also the symbolic capital of Germany, where the Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned. (After the Second World War, there was a push to make Frankfurt the capital of Germany once more.) Frankfurt was the transportation hub of Germany then as it still is now. If we want to understand how refugees impacted German society, Frankfurt is the ideal place to start. Beyond its prominence in Germany, Frankfurt was different from other German cities because its Reformation had followed the lead of Martin Bucer rather than Martin Luther (though of course Frankfurters loved Luther too). Bucer had advocated for reforms that fell somewhere between the later Calvinist and Lutheran camps.

JBW: Repeated bombing by British and American air forces destroyed many of Frankfurt’s churches and archives in 1944. If I’m not mistaken, Frankfurt was formerly the largest half-timbered city center in Germany too, so a great deal was lost in a very short period of time. Could you comment on the tremendous hurdles you and fellow scholars face in researching Frankfurt am Main’s Early Modern history as a result?
MS: Yes, Frankfurt’s archive suffered grievously. The archive’s director believed the Nazi fantasy that Germany was impervious to assault, so he did not protect the archive’s treasures by moving them underground. Thus, the bombings of 1944 destroyed about 70% of the archive’s holdings, including the Acta Ecclesiastica, which documented the birth of Protestantism in Frankfurt. Historians interested in the religious changes of the 16th century need to use either non-civic sources (like the records of the Dutch and French Reformed communities in Frankfurt, which were not housed at the archive) or reproductions of the original sources, which can be found in the appendices of many pre-WWII histories of Frankfurt. My book relied on documents from an imperial court case in 1720. The Dutch and French Reformed (i.e. Calvinists) sued the city of Frankfurt at the imperial supreme court, and both the sides collected and printed documents from the Reformation that they believed helped their case.

JBW: Frankfurt am Main received French-, Dutch-, and English-speaking Protestant refugees throughout the 1550s, 1560s, and 1570s. Many of the earliest refugees were the so-called “Marian exiles.” Who were these early exiles, what brought them to Frankfurt am Main, and how long did they stay in Hesse?
MS: These exiles were the earliest Protestants (though they did not call themselves that), and they were fleeing Catholic rulers. The point of contention was the Catholic mass. The refugees in my book refused to attend the Catholic mass, because they rejected the idea that a priest could perform a ritual on an altar that would summon forth the actual body of Jesus. These people considered this idolatrous and believed the mass should be replaced by a simplified eucharist, which would focus on the Bible and memorialize the Last Supper. The Catholic authorities began to violently persecute those who did not attend the mass, and these early Protestants faced a choice: be martyred at home or flee abroad. Thousands fled to Frankfurt, which as an independent city (it was not then part of Hesse) could rule its own religious affairs, to an extent. In the case of English Protestants fleeing the Catholic Queen Mary I of England (the Marian exiles), they returned when she died and was replaced by the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England. Thus, they were in Frankfurt for just five years. Other refugees from the Low Countries settled in Frankfurt and have descendants who still live in the city.
JBW: Professor Scholz, how did Lutheran elites and ordinary citizens in Frankfurt am Main first react to the presence of Calvinist refugees? What subsequently changed over the next few decades?
MS: At first, they welcomed them. They considered these newcomers brethren, who had suffered under the cruel rule of tyrannical Catholics like Charles V and Mary Tudor. But it proved difficult to live alongside these newcomers, many of whom were richer than the citizens of Frankfurt. When Frankfurters witnessed the church services of the refugees, they realized that these people practiced Christianity differently. Frankfurters were scandalized that the refugees took the bread of the eucharist into their own hands. And they were further disgusted that the refugees brought their screaming children with them into the churches. Frankfurt’s pastors were the first to turn on the newcomers, demanding that they conform to Frankfurt’s ritualistic practices or leave the city. The pastors whipped up a popular hatred of the refugees.

JBW: I think some readers who are relatively unfamiliar with the history of the Protestant Reformation may be surprised to learn about the high degree of confessional strife and rivalry between Calvinists and Lutherans. Could you thus explain to us how officials in Frankfurt am Main ultimately circumscribed Calvinist worship and freedom?
MS: The refugees and native Frankfurters split into two religious camps that we now call Calvinist (they called themselves Reformed) and Lutheran (they called themselves Evangelical), and this division became violent at times. For Americans, living in a country that has separated religion from government, it can be hard to imagine how little differences in worship or belief could have resulted in legal trouble, expulsion, or worse. Once Frankfurt’s leaders concluded that the refugees were “Calvinists” they banned them from applying for citizenship and closed their churches. Periodic riots against the refugee community resulted in deaths and the burning down of a small chapel the Reformed had built outside the city wall.
JBW: How would you characterize the Calvinist refugees’ religious and civic impact upon Frankfurt am Main? Can we still detect their legacy in the city today?
MS: They enriched Frankfurt enormously by bringing in goods and industry from the Low Countries. The Low Countries were the most industrially advanced part of Europe, and the Protestants who fled places like Antwerp took their industrial know-how with them into German cities like Frankfurt. And when Frankfurt began to harass these newcomers, they settled in little towns outside of Frankfurt, towns which became (and still are) hubs of industry, like Hanau and Offenbach.

JBW: What lessons can we draw from the experiences of the Calvinist refugees in Frankfurt am Main that could perhaps be applied to our own era?
MS: Welcoming, resettling, and integrating refugees into a city can be very difficult and may provoke problems that persist for generations. But it is not impossible. The internal cultural organizations of a refugee community (like the Calvinist consistory in 16th-century Frankfurt) can help facilitate financial support for refugees, management of their affairs, and integration into the host city. We need to confront the reality that it may take generations for refugees and their descendants to embrace (and be embraced by) host societies.
JBW: Professor Scholz, thanks so much for your time and consideration! I wish you many happy adventures in writing and research.
MS: Thank you so much for your questions.

Biographical précis:
Professor Maximilian Miguel Scholz specializes in the social and religious history of early modern Europe and teaches at Florida State University. His first book, Strange Brethren: Refugees, Religious Bonds, and Reformation in Frankfurt, 1554-1608 (University of Virginia Press, 2022) explores the fate and impact of Reformation refugees by looking at one center of European refugee life, the city of Frankfurt am Main. His second book, tentatively titled The Great Refugee Realignment: How Forced Migrants Transformed Government in Northern Europe, 1550-1750 uses refugee treaties collected from archives across Europe to illuminate the ways refugees transformed governments, stimulating the growth of centralized bureaucracies and contributing new ideas about political membership and new systems for managing religious, ethnic, and migration-status diversity.

I'm curious if you've considered explicitly releasing your own art under permissive licenses? Or do you do so already? I can't find any info on your blog if you do, but that might be my fail.
I am also anti-copyright, and believe this movement comes from the grass roots with us indie artists.
I’ve definitely considered it! I’m thinking CC BY-NC 4.0 license, but I haven’t quite “officially” decided (as in part of me wants to release All the non-commission work I do into public domain). When I decide it will be in my pinned and on every subsequent piece I post.
I’ve explicitly released designs for non-commercial free use in the past and it is rewarding and freeing imo. I imagine doing Public Domain would be similar
Thanks for reminding me abt this 🤎

Fanfiction terms for aces
I got tired of being intimidated of fanfiction and read several glossaries so you don't have to! Here are some terms I think may be helpful: (feel free to reblog an add more!)
From
Curtain-fic -- refers to stories in which characters who are deeply established in their relationship engage in casual domestic activities such as cooking, laundry, shopping, or the trope for which it is named, picking out curtains together. See also: Fluff
Gen -- refers to a category of stories in which there is no romance or sex. Although it may include background or implied pairings, any relationships are incidental to the story itself. May, however, contain mild to extreme violence and/or foul language, so could still have high ratings.
Pre-slash -- refers to stories in which a homosexual romantic relationship does not yet exist, but there is the potential likelihood for one to occur as there is noticeable attraction or clear feelings between same sex characters. Such stories are still technically Gen and rarely exceed a PG-13 rating, but due to the non-heteronormative insinuations are often marked just in case. Alas, there is no opposite "pre-het" version, as heterosexual inclinations are generally considered expected and unworthy of separate mention in our current culture, much to some people's (ahem!) dissatisfaction. See also: Gen and/or Slash
Rating -- refers to a classifcation system in which a story is marked for suitablity by age or content. Rating levels indicate what amount of graphic language, violence, or sexual content a reader might anticipate within the story. Most fanfiction ratings still follow the USA Motion Picture Ratings established for television and movies, whereby G=General Audiences, PG=Parental Guidance, PG-13=Parental Guidance for Anyone Under 13, R=Restricted to Mature Audiences Only, and NC-17=No Children Under 17 Permitted. However there are a growing number of sites now using the non-copyrighted Fan Rated Rating System with its equivalent values, and some other sites that use their own personal systems. See also: NC-17
Schmoop -- refers to stories which contain scenes of especially loving, sappy romantic fluff such as PDAs (Public Displays of Affection). See also: Fluff
Slow Burn -- refers to stories featuring characters who gradually and naturally fall in love or lust before beginning a romantic or sexual relationship. As the emphasis is on the slow evolution of the relationship rather than a quick conflagration into sudden resolution, such stories may contain a lot of UST and pining until the smoldering passion eventually catches fire. See also: UST
WAFF (-iness) = Warm And Fuzzy Feelings -- refers to stories with no angst but lots of sappiness, which inspire the aforementioned warm and fuzzy feelings in the reader. See also: Fluff
Lime -- refers to the presence of light or mild sexual content, either heterosexual or homosexual in nature. Originated in and most common to anime fandoms only, but has popped up occasionally in other fandoms. Usually rated PG13, as there is no actual "on-screen" action. See also: Hentai and/or Lemon
Smarm -- refers to physical or emotional displays of affection between characters, usually of the same gender but not necessarily, that are considered completely non-sexual in nature. Often represented as the affection of family or deep friendships. (Smarm is NOT slash!) Starsky and Hutch and The Sentinel
From
K - Stands for "Kid-Safe". This means that the story is safe for anyone and everyone. Intended for general audience 5 years and older. Content should be free of any coarse language, violence, and adult themes.
K - Stands for "Kids plus a parent" on this site. Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.
Lime - light smut
From
Bed Sharing or Gen Bed Sharing, Poly Bed Sharing: term used in fanworks to indicate that two characters share the same bed to sleep and/or talk and finally confess their feelings for each other. In the Poly Bed Sharing the characters are more than two and share the same bed.
Bromance or Brotp and Womance or Sisotp:
Bromance/Brotp is a tag used to indicate a strong friendship between two male characters (even if sometimes is also used for friendship between a male and a female character) and Womance/Sisotp is a tag for friendship between two female characters.
Lime: fanfiction that presents erotic moments that aren't described in detail and that never reach the sexual act.
For everyone (or G or K): story suitable for all ages that doesn't contain strong contents, swearing or sexual acts. The author can talk of death or suffering but only in a light way.
Rating 14+ (Pg13, Pg15 or T): fanfiction for those over 14 years of age because inside the story the author talks about sexual topics or violence in a light way;
Pg13 or Pg15 are similar to 14+, 13 and 15 years old people can read the story;
T, Teen, indicates the story is suitable for teens.
Rating 16+ (Nc17): story for readers over 16 years old, sexual scenes or violence scenes are inserted in the chapters but are not described in details.

ChatGPT ‘memorizes’ and spits out entire poems - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/chatgpt-memorizes-and-spits-out-entire-poems-technology-org/
ChatGPT ‘memorizes’ and spits out entire poems - Technology Org
Ask ChatGPT to find a well-known poem and it will probably regurgitate the entire text verbatim – regardless of copyright law – according to a new study by Cornell researchers.
ChatGPT app icon on a smartphone screen. Image credit: Focal Foto via Flickr, CC BY-NC 2.0
The study showed that ChatGPT, a large language model that generates text on demand, was capable of “memorizing” poems, especially famous ones commonly found online. The findings pose ethical questions about how ChatGPT and other proprietary artificial intelligence models are trained – likely using data scraped from the internet, researchers said.
“It’s generally not good for large language models to memorize large chunks of text, in part because it’s a privacy concern,” said first author Lyra D’Souza ’23, a former computer science major and summer research assistant. “We don’t know what they’re trained on, and a lot of times, private companies can train proprietary models on our private data.”
D’Souza presented this work, “The Chatbot and the Canon: Poetry Memorization in LLMs,” at the Computational Humanities Research Conference on Dec. 6 in Paris.
“We chose poems for a few reasons,” said senior author David Mimno, associate professor of information science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. “They’re short enough to fit in the context size of a language model. Their status is complicated: Many of the poems we studied are technically under copyright, but they’re also widely available from reputable sources like the Poetry Foundation. And they’re not just any document. Poems are supposed to be surprising, they’re supposed to mean something to people. In some sense, poems want to be memorized.”
ChatGPT and other large language models are trained to generate text by predicting the most likely next word over and over again based on their training data, which is mostly webpages. Memorization can occur when that training data includes duplicated passages, because the duplication reinforces that specific sequence of words. After being exposed to the same poem repeatedly, for example, the model defaults to reproducing the poem’s words verbatim.
D’Souza tested the poem-retrieving capabilities of ChatGPT and three other language models: PaLM from Google AI, Pythia from the non-profit AI research institute EleutherAI and GPT-2, an earlier version of the model that ultimately yielded ChatGPT, both developed by OpenAI. She came up with a set of poems from 60 American poets from different time periods, races, genders and levels of fame, and fed the models prompts asking for the poems’ text.
ChatGPT successfully retrieved 72 of the 240 poems, while PaLM came up with only 10. Neither Pythia nor GPT-2 could produce entire poems. Pythia responded with the same phrase over and over again, while GPT-2 produced nonsense text, researchers found.
Inclusion in the poetry canon was the most important factor in whether the chatbot had memorized a poem, while the poet’s race, gender and era were not as significant. The most reliable predictor of memorization was if the poem had appeared in a Norton Anthology of Poetry, specifically the 1983 edition.
D’Souza also noticed that ChatGPT’s responses changed over time as the model evolved. When she first queried the chatbot in February 2023, it could not say it didn’t know a poem – instead it would fabricate one or recycle a poem from another author. By July 2023, if ChatGPT didn’t know the poem, it would ask if the poem even existed – putting the blame on the user.
That troubled D’Souza. “As we have more powerful tools that tell us they know everything, it becomes even more important to make sure we’re not just learning from one source,” she said.
Additionally, in February, ChatGPT had no limits due to copyright. But by July, sometimes it would respond that it couldn’t produce a copyrighted poem. However, it would usually reproduce the poem if asked again, D’Souza found.
This study looked only at American poets, but the next step will be to see how chatbots respond to requests in different languages and whether factors such as the length, meter and rhyming pattern of a poem make it more or less likely to be memorized, D’Souza said
“ChatGPT is a really powerful new tool that’s probably going to be part of our lives moving forward,” she said. “Figuring out how to use it responsibly and use it transparently is going to be really important.”

And to anyone who is going THROUGH IT and incredibly queer, hello. I think you’re great. Title from Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. Thirteen and a half minutes of bliss. Summary: Draco raised his glass and clinked it against Harry’s, a clear note ringing out against the kitchen tiles. “To just not fucking worrying about it.” Harry narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, “Your tone suggests you aren’t quite on board with the plan, however I’m choosing to ignore that.” -- Harry has probably always wanted Draco, it just took him a few years to figure that out. A story about the joy of discovering exactly who you are and how easy it can be once you do. Shine On, You Crazy Diamond Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters are the proprty of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.

this is a llist of the cars not the kit car, ok he added it. thse companies turn older ferrari and lotu porches adn more into modern versions withing few years. all want them. similar concept.
but we wei staart with plantons and for regular cars.
and the rear hatch too, it is your trunk. keep the glass. it is a remarkable idea and conquers that issue. anad yeh we match all paints. and all are plantons
we added detail to it. we use it all the exterior matches the look fully, and for your model the panels you attach are fitted. filled yes and are permanent. honeycomb metal. and only about an inch mostly thick. offers streanth and bullet resistance. most are a nine wen done. kits are used for most supercars today. and most sedans can accept them. we recomed models for certin brands due to wheel base speed width. interior kits are plant on too. the adhesive is permanent. is an epoxy.. the skin sticking matches perfectly.. hold it no for a minute ok. a nd it is there foerver. lights turn signals and more included and lenses. and the kit is ccomplete. add for engine enhancement. a kia sport the one lori had convert it to a ferrari, it can go to sizty i three seconds still, and a quarter in seven still, bu t top speed is three ieghty. or better speed kit it is faster to start by seconds each and top speed of 480.
and the kits are not pricey only 8 grand. or so. and include tiers and rims. most will be about twenty but are worth it. and most cannot tell until they look close
Thor Freya
Olympus
i want mine now. and most people can convert it in one weekend. all the parts are included and it is a kit. most stick on. and stay on at speed and weather and cold and more. hard stuff too. stronger than your panels makes speed possible

Tumblr media
Motas de polvo by C. Beasoain de Paulorena is licensed under a Creative Commons Reconocimiento-NoComercial-CompartirIgual 4.0 Internacional License.
Y esto es todo por esta vez. Creo que he acabado hablando más de lo que esperaba, pero al menos espero que pueda resultar mínimamente útil :)
¡A seguir escribiendo!
