Well ackshually we have a blanket on us called the atmosphere that keeps us from getting too hot or too cold. Without the atmosphere, the part of space we are in is both too hot (250°C in direct sunlight) and too cold (-100°C in the shade).
What part of space could you be comfortable in direct sunlight without that blanket? TV Tropes (obviously a trustworthy source for astrophysics) says it's further than Earth but not as far as Mars: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceIsCold.
Okay but to actually calculate this: if you were a blackbody chilling out at a comfy 23°C, you'd be receiving/emitting about 430 W/m2, a third as much as Earth's atmosphere does. That puts you at about 1.75 AUs, half again as far from Earth as Mars is!
everyone knows that space is very very cold, and the sun is very very hot. so i assume there's a bit of space kind of near the sun which is just right. balmy space

Where does the crystal ball get the visual data from? Does the dwarven telephone have a camera? Do the parrots broadcast the things they see? Do the gnomes just scry on everyone they talk to and use a separate system for outgoing signals??
oh ok. the dwarves in dungeon meshi live in a steampunk world. good to know. But i love the juxtaposition between elves using magic birds to communicate while the dwarves have straight up telephones
and the gnomes are hopelessly dependent on the orb

I first saw this problem on the Google Labs Aptitude Test. A professor and I filled a blackboard without getting anywhere. Have fun.
Nerd Sniping [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Black Hat is sitting on a chair, Cueball is standing next to him. Across the street, another Guy is coming from a building walking towards the pedestrian crossing across from Black Hat.] Black Hat: There's a certain type of brain that's easily disabled. Black Hat: If you show it an interesting problem, it involuntarily drops everything else to work on it.
[The Guy across the street is about to enter a crosswalk, which is seen from right behind Black Hat in his chair, holding onto the sign, which is still pointing down. Cueball is looking on.] Black Hat: This has led me to invent a new sport: Nerd Sniping. Black Hat: See that physicist crossing the road?
[Black Hat lifts up the sign when the physicist is in the middle of the street, halfway across the pedestrian crossing.] Black Hat: Hey!
[A close-up of Black Hat's sign is shown in a frameless panel. There is text above and below an image of a four-by-five grid of nodes with resistors (shown as wiggly lines) between every node and also continuing away from the 16 outer nodes. A total of 5 columns with 5 and 4 rows with 6 resistors for a total of 20 nodes and 49 resistors. Two nodes, a knight's move apart, are marked with red circles in the 3rd row 2nd column and the 2nd row 4th column.] Sign: On this infinite grid of ideal one-ohm resistors, Sign: what's the equivalent resistance between the two marked nodes?
[The Physicist has stopped pondering the questions, a hand to his chin.] Physicist: It's... Hmm. Interesting. Maybe if you start with... No, wait. Hmm... You could—
[In another frameless panel, a ten-wheeled truck is zooming past from the right, apparently going through the spot where the physicist just stood.] Truck: Foooom
[Cueball looks down on Black Hat, who looks back up from his chair at the curb, again holding the sign down. He lifts one hand up while replying.] Cueball: I will have no part in this. Black Hat: C'mon, make a sign. It's fun! Physicists are two points, mathematicians three.

Magic the Gathering Quiz: These four cards have something in common, and there's only one other magic card that shares that quality with the rest of them. What makes these cards special, and what card completes the set?

Huh, can Law use Mes on Brook to have him switch bodies? Or would it not work because he doesn't have a physical heart? His devil fruit let's him function like he still has organs, but he is unaffected by electricity, because he has no skin. The questions keep coming, what curse did you lay on me?
Did I just get Nerd Sniped?

I just think that brook would really stress law out, like, conceptually

"you ever discover something about yourself that makes you question everything you thought you knew?" "is this about your parents again"
#my art#calikiwi#<- goes in the individual tag because i like how that drawing turned out :3#i imagine that snipes is probably not very big on computers or even very knowledgeable about them at all#in fact to a certain extent i think itd be funny if he resented them a little since hes so outdoorsy#[another thing that makes him dating a big computer nerd very fun conceptually. like oh whats so special about that hunk of metal...]#but every once in a while something will make him go You know what. maybe ill give it a try#and then 5 minutes in he gets frustrated and has to go take a walk#this is one of those moments#🗃

kicking my feet and giggling thinking about vector spaces
#ok mostly this was yesterday. i meant to post this yesterday and forgot#and it was a more specific thing than JUST vector spaces#but im always afraid if i post too much about [specific math specialty] on here i'll accidentally doxx myself lol#i mean PROBABLY not. but you never know#i got nerd sniped the other day#my friend sent me a minecraft video where some streamers were doing math#and idk if she knew or not but it was specifically math thats right in my wheelhouse#which apparently ive missed!#it doesnt come up much in entry level stuff for [field im trying to get a job in]#ended up getting one of my old textbooks out to read about something we didnt cover in my uni classes :)#math#numbers do not lie

You know all those "...this will not happen again in a thousand years!" viral math posts about a date or year?
You know, the ones where if you think about it you realize that they really happen much more often? Here's one for 2025 where it literally won't happen again in 1000 and where it's actually easy to see that it's true. 1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025
Before you repost this you should copy the left side of that equation and paste it into Google or wolframalpha.com to verify that it does in fact equal 2025. (Or click here to get a link to the Wolfram Alpha calculation, then double-check that the site I linked you to was in fact Wolfram Alpha.)
The next year to follow this pattern will add +10³ to the end, and 10³=1000, so yeah, this won't happen again in a thousand years.
I played around a little bit with the numbers to see if there's some other pattern going on here. It seems to follow from the facts that 45²=2025 and that 45 is the 9th triangular number (i.e. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9=45).
The next year that's an even square (of any integer) is 2116 as that's 46².
This year can also be written as the product of two squares as: 9² x 5² = 2025 Or as the sum of three squares: 40² + 20² + 5² = 2025

How did Cyclonia become the empire that we know today? 👁👁
The history is a lot more elaborate than that, but there's the condensed version. I'm glad at least someone is willing to pay attention to it.
((Dagr is an OC belonging to @ashe-alter :3 thanks Grimm for letting me include him in this AU, enjoy the surprise cameo.

I recently got hit by an S tier nerd sniping image. I spent a good hour on it before giving up and googling it to find out it's an unsolved problem of mathematics.
it's got similar vibes to the Collatz conjecture where it seems so simple on the surface and it seems pretty apparently solvable.
