New wof OC, Envy!! He's from the fictional continent of Libellula southwest of Pyrriah and southeast of Pantala, which was founded by ancient dragons of Pyrriah. He also belongs to a fan tribe I made called Cavewings.
Cavewings live in caverns, ravines, and canyons. They inhabit most of Libellula alongside the Briskwings, Marshwings, and the Mantiswings who migrated from the underground of Pantala.
The Cavewings are distant relatives to bats (which is how their tribe is closest related to mammals) aswell as the Nightwings. It is said that the Cavewings were Nightwings who migrated to Libellula and were forever cursed by a traitorous Animus nightwing. They are almost exclusively nocturnal and barely leave their caverns.
They have black or dark gray scales with Multicolor tints, and also have fur! They have wings like that of bats and can cling to walls with them. They have a size comparable to Rainwings but slightly bigger.
They have very light sensitive yet big, strangely formed eyes. They have decent dark vision, but impeccable echolocation. They produce high pitched clicks and most have squeaky voices. They also have a high intersex population. They cannot breath fire but have an ability similar to the bacteria in the spit of Nightwings. It's more like rabies, and causes the bitten animal to go crazy and slowly end up dying. They also have large ears to hear better. Like nightwings with a tear scale, it's a rare attribute to have a white eyelash (like he does), but it doesn't symbolize anything. The don't have any nightwing powers in general.
It's common for Cavewins to be named after negative traits/ideals and also physical attributes (ex: Sass, Cowardly, Resent, Starfur, Smallwings) These naming traditions are to promote loving and embracing "bad" things about yourself.
Their tribe isn't nomadic but don't have specific kingdoms. They have a main cavern where most Cavewings stay, but they all stay in caverns scattered across Libellula. These are called colonies. All colonies have leaders but they revolve around a queen, Queen Recluse
Libellula doesn't have any territories for any tribes, most just live in any habitats sustainable. Briskwings are the most nomadic, who pack up their camps every change if the season across unspecified spots in highlands or outback.

✅ and/or 🤡 for the writer emoji ask? Also can't wait for Ch.17 of GS!!
🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?
Ok so there's ONE line in Ch. 16 of "Giving Sanctuary" that had me in stitches but it's smack dab in the middle of an otherwise VERY busy chapter with all the smut and tragedy and misunderstanding, so I'm not surprised that no one really commented on it but:
“Are you well, Hob?” Dream inquired. He was dressed too now, but his black shirt was loose at the collar and while his appearance was as pristine as ever, there was no formality in his bearing or his attire. “You’re shivering.”
“Uh, yeah, suppose I am,” Hob stuttered. “S’nice sometimes to start the day with a cold bath, you know? Like a really cold bath. It gets the blood pumping, especially on a hot day like this.”
Outside, the rain pattered softly against the window, filling the silence as Hob stared at Dream, willing him to ignore the utter lack of sunshine outside.
I'm a total nerd with nerdlike humor to match and the thought of Hob just so pathetically trying to explain away his cold bath that morning as anything but trying to hide his arousal towards Dream by claiming it's just some freakin'... health benefit thing he does as a weirdo human and it's especially good on a hot day and then the camera just slooooowly drawing back to show them both standing there, framed against the window, and showing the fact it's a soggy, gray, miserable cold day in England outside and Hob is just staring at Dream, desperately willing him not to look out the gigantic windows behind them and notice this incredibly obvious fact makes me cry actual tears of laughter at my own joke, I can just see it so clearly in my head.
Thank you for the ask, I can't wait to get Ch. 17 to you guys!!

This is so random but I don’t get the hc that kuroo is a chemistry nerdLike the basis for this is that one argument he has w/ yaku. But all the insults were related to chemicals in foods. And he goes into a career involving sports so it’d make sense that he be knowledgeable in nutrition and shit
he said yaku was lacking in a certain brain chemical thats linked to development but he knew the full compound name of that chemical which,, is part of chemistry basically lol

Blog Post #1
A writing genre that I really feel connected to would be any kind of news or scholarly article that would be used to inform a mass majority of people on current social issues, current events, and as well as progressive research based upon media sources and credibility. I am very familiar with news articles due to working with them not only with college, but having worked in a highschool that heavily depended on using source material. Biopics are definitely my favorite genre of film to dive into, gathering a multitude of heavy references and personal experiences that directly relate to the subject matter is an exciting thing not only for a nerdlike me, but having specific research and having legitimate information be processed and stylized into film is something that has yet to be truly appreciated, Biopics tend to use and reference certain articles that best exclaim certain parts of the story that they are trying to tell, giving the audience members a chance to truly do their own research if needed be.

@boag my thoughts on this are too long to go into the replies but this isn’t at all me trying to start an argument, just my thoughts on the direction that cinema and television have gone in the past few years
my opinions on riverdale aside, my question is: WHY remake the archie comics instead of just writing an original show? especially when riverdale has so little in common with the source material aside from the characters. i’d understand if it was an adaptation of the comics… but it’s not. it’s a remake.
what’s the point? why does it have to be the archie comics in particular? and i don’t mean it in a “they ruined my favorite comics” way— i read maybe two archie comics growing up. i mean it as a genuine question: if the remake is so different from the original in its core values and message, why does it have to derive from that particular source media?
i’m more concerned with this overall trend in mass media as of late. the remakes, the franchises, the cashgrabs. you go to the movies, and what are your options? adaptations, spin-offs, the 45th installment in the marvel cinematic universe. how many sherlock adaptations did we get until rian johnson got the idea to just make a new detective? why don’t we get new superheroes anymore? why are they rebooting pretty little liars again? why is 2D animation being pushed out in favor of bland 3D animated remakes?
i’m concerned with the blatant commercialization of entertainment media. how big budget studios don’t take creative risks, how they’ll just draw from their existing vault of ip’s and make another reboot. how original media gets pushed to the wayside until they can justify canceling it. how writers, animators, directors are shafted again and again for doing anything outside of the stale established formula that is guaranteed to make millions because we, the audience, have no options anymore.
when you’re a parent and you want to take your kid to the movies— because that’s what kids want to do, see a movie in theaters— your options are iron man 17 or a soulless live action adaptation of a disney movie that came out 40 years ago. when you’re having a night in and want to watch something on netflix, your options are an original show that got canceled after one season or a low-budget adaptation of a trashy erotica. if you’re a horror fan, you have a remake of a classic movie that did not need a remake or another installment in an increasingly convoluted franchise.
of course, this isn’t to say all movies and shows are like this now. like i mentioned before, rian johnson created a new gentleman detective that is a welcome break from sherlock holmes. glass onion is a standalone movie that does not require context from knives out to be enjoyed. i also saw the new puss in boots movie a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it, and it’s obviously part of a larger franchise that has spanned two decades. but at the same time, i was able to enjoy it despite not having seen the last few shrek movies or even remembering most of the first puss in boots spin-off.
but these movies are few and far in-between. and honestly, we know why this is happening. it’s the same reason hbo shelved most of its original animated shows and the batgirl movie. the same reason disney remakes movies just as their copyright on the original is about to expire. the same reason netflix will make yet another 365 days adaptation while canceling literally any other decent show. at this point, they’re not concerned with making media that is high-quality and will last for generations. they don’t care any more about creating a cultural legacy because they already have one they can cash in on. the goal is to line the pockets of an already wealthy entertainment executive who does not care about the creatives who get fucked over in his quest for more money.
movies and television aren’t the only industries suffering from this. books nowadays are described with tropes instead of actual descriptions (“enemies to lovers! sharing a bed! found family! harry potter meets star trek!” but what about the plot?) we’re also seeing a new strain of books that are written just to get an eventual movie adaptation. video games are becoming more uniform because game developers would rather copy one successful game ad nauseam instead of making something new (why are so many games open world since breath of the wild came out?) this is a culture-wide problem, not an industry problem.
in this kind of cultural climate, independent creators are a beacon of variety and originality. but at the end of the day, they’re limited too; limited by budget constraints, limited by time constraints, limited by the relentless competition of multi-million dollar companies endlessly churning out high-budget, low-risk media.
that’s my gripe with velma. it’s just another in a long line of blatant cashgrabs that insults the audience and the legacy of the franchise. it’s not the first show to use shock value and bad writing to farm negative reactions for its SEO, and it unfortunately will not be the last. but it’s still hours of effort— from animators, voice actors, sound engineers, and writers— wasted on this shitty show, efforts that could have created something amazing if the bottom line wasn’t just to make money.
what’s funny about velma (2023) is that they’ve already tried a dark and edgy scooby doo remake. the first live action movie from 2002 was originally directed towards adults, and was rife with dirty jokes, drug references, and cleavage shots of daphne and velma.
you know why the final product didn’t resemble that at all? bc they realized early on that the edgy grimdark angle fucking sucked. they reworked the movie to be more family-friendly— still with a complex plotline, but without the gratuitous sexual references and adult jokes. they did end up keeping a few references to shaggy smoking marijuana (his love interest being named mary jane, for one) but they were super toned down so that they’d go right over the heads of any kids watching.
it wasn’t necessarily a kids movie. i was five years old when it came out, and i loved it, but it was fun for teens and adults to watch too. and even with the dated cgi for scooby, it still has a lot of rewatch value. ask yourself if you think anyone is going to be rewatching velma in 2043 the way people still watch scooby doo twenty years after it was released.
this weird trend of the past few years of remaking fun and campy media into something edgy and full of shock value (wednesday, riverdale, and that awful winx club series come to mind) is so boring and trite and misguided. if you want to make dark media so bad, write something original instead of borrowing the barest skeletons of existing media and distorting them until they’re unrecognizable. it’s such an insult to the creators to have their stories mutilated by people who have no understanding of or appreciation for the characters or audience.

Elise Cooper Interviews Mark Greaney
Sierra Six
The Gray Man Book 11
Mark Greaney
Berkley Pub
Feb 15, 2022
Sierra Six by Mark Greaney is not one story but two stories in one book.  Readers are treated to a double helping of the Gray Man, told from a dual point of view, today and 12 years ago. Both stories per usual are compelling and dramatic where readers are treated to a rollercoaster ride of vivid action, a lot of intrigue, and fantastic dialogue.
Twelve years ago, after the Special Activities Division of the CIA loses a man on an assignment, Court Gentry (The Gray Man) is called in as a replacement and given the designation Gulf Sierra Six. Because he had no military background and always worked alone, the members of the team resented him at first.  But overtime he proved himself and gained the respect of the team and its leader, Zach Hightower.
Twelve years later Court is hired as a freelance intelligence operator to infiltrate the Turkish embassy property in Algiers and plant a listening device. There he comes face to face with Murad Khan, the head of KRF who is responsible for death and destruction years earlier. This terrorist had been reported killed at the time. Now Court is once again on the hunt to stop Khan as he plans another major attack involving dirty bombs in India.
The story and ending are typical Gray Man, a lot of action, suspense, and tension. As with all his books there are scenes that put the reader in the middle of the intense fight. This book shows why Greaney is one of the best thriller writers today.
Elise Cooper:  Netflix series?
Mark Greaney: What I hear is that it’s coming out in July.  They already have done a test screening in LA, last week.  They bring in those who sign up for it and have them fill out a questionnaire of what they liked and did not like.  I have only seen fifteen seconds of footage, but I did read the script.  I thought it was terrific.  It is based on the first book, The Gray Man, but bring in elements that were in later books.
EC:  How did you get the idea for the story for this book?
MG: I had talked to my editor for years about writing an origin story where readers could see Court Gentry as he develops.  I decided to write something that relates in the past and present. Readers can see Court as a younger man and then twelve years later.  The stories have two different timelines, two different objectives for the hero, and two different ticking clocks.
EC:  How would you describe the young Court versus the older Court?
MG:  The young Court is 25 years old. He has been trained his entire life to operate firearms and move tactically, without any other skills.  He has no people skills and is not James Bond with the ladies. At this stage of his life, he does not have a lot of world experience, yet comes across cocky and sure of himself. He gets brought down a few pegs in this story. He does missions he is told to do by the CIA. He is a soldier and a spy.
In the present Court is older, wiser, a little laid back, but not as sure of himself.  He seeks justice.  Now he will go against the wishes of his bosses.  He will break away if necessary, playing to his own tune. He has expanded his skill levels with a lot more years and tradecraft behind him. He is much better at what he does.
EC:  Zach was in the past story, but not the present story?
MG:  I do not want to ever be tied to having to bring all the secondary characters into every story.  There are some books that will not have Zoya, and some not to have Zach.  In the present Court is very much on a solo mission although he does call Hanley and Brewer for some help. I do not want to get into a trap into designing my story surrounded by a cast of characters.  Instead, I want to pick and choose.
EC:  How would you describe Julie Martinez, part of Court’s team as a CIA analyst?
MG:  Chatty, nerdlike, direct, attentive, persistent, has integrity.  She feels like an outsider. She is focused and has attention to detail.  Like Court, she does what she feels is right.
EC: Julie, his first love versus Zoya, his recent love?
MG:  I think these two characters are so different. Julie is a young CIA officer analyst who is incredibly intelligent.  She is also on the Autism spectrum.  She and Court become friends and then more than friends throughout the course of the novel.  His naivety and her directness were interesting aspects to put together.  Zoya on the other hand is in the same profession as Court, an operative. She is older and a rougher personality.  Because he has changed in the past twelve years Julie and present-day Court would not have worked out so well. Both women and Court feel like outsiders. Zoya has integrity but gets there only at the end.  She and Court both live lives where they must be distrustful, paranoid.  She is a different version of Court, but both are attracted to one another.
EC:  Why the War on Terror returning?
MG: I wanted to showcase how different things are today than twelve years ago.  Many Gray Man books did not deal with Middle East terrorism.  This was a conscious decision because almost all other thriller writers wrote about the ticking timebomb.  Now I feel we are removed from it. I wanted to take a recent pass and see how my hero deals with it.
EC:  How would you describe the bad guy, Murad Khan?
MG: He is a Kashmirian who went against his own country. He is a member of their intelligence agency but has also created his own organization to fight. Now he is fighting India, his true passion. When I write a villain I must get into their head.  He is against humanity and very cruel, a terrible person.
EC:  The setting also dealt with CIA bases in Khost and Chapman?
MG:  I did some research on where we were twelve years ago regarding the War on Terror. The geography was important.  Camp Chapman was a place where very terrible things happened.  The other bases including Bagram, Jalalabad, and Salerno are all close to the Pakistani border. I wanted to show how Pakistan is not a real ally of the US.
EC:  The Indian Mafia?
MG:  The biggest one is D company, which I changed to B company.  The real head lives in Pakistan, not India.  He has a real chip on his shoulders, bombing government buildings and airlines.  They did most of their stuff twenty years ago. I thought that my mafia would form an alliance with a Muslim group. I saw the movie “Hotel Mumbai” and read some books about the terrorist attack there. It played into my story, where a terrorist attack happens at a shopping mall in India.
EC:  How would you describe Priya Bandari?
MG:  She is someone Court teams up with, out of necessity. She is very wet behind the ears as an intelligence specialist and reconnaissance technician on Court’s freelance job.  She is directly out of college.  She is motivated for personal reasons to stay in the fight. I hope readers begin to understand her and see her point of view.  I hope to use her character in other books. She is brave, somewhat defiant, and daring.  None of this comes naturally to her but Priya does rise to the occasion.
EC:  Next book?
MG:  I am currently plotting out the story. It will come out this time next year.  Court, Zoya, Zach, and Brewer will be back along with Hanley to some degree. In July I have another book coming out based on an audio play that was released in December. It is titled Armored. It is about military contractors in Mexico fighting the drug cartel. Josh Duffy is a wounded veteran whose job is to protect a UN delegation that is trying to negotiate a peace deal with a drug lord. There will be a second book, but I do not know what happens after that.  Duffy’s wife, Nicole, is a former army officer and a helicopter pilot.  I could see Duffy and Nicole taking a lead in another book.
THANK YOU!!

A Nerd
A nerd is an intelligent person, someone who feeds and exercises the mind.
A piece of opinion may misinterpret a nerd though to be socially awkward, yet there isn't or shouldn't be awkwardness in intelligence.
When you feed and exercise the mind to be a nerd is actually advantageous, you learn how to be socially in various spaces and focus on the matter at hand.
To be a nerd is a responsibility in itself because you are taking care of your mind, you think for yourself.
A nerd is a smart person to say it differently, someone who reads and writes with their heart and mind.
A fact is reality, truth, and in reality a nerd is responsible in learning what is the truth of a matter.
When you study you're working your brain to be nerdlike to understand something, whether that something is a a field of thought that coincides with your desired career path or how to fix your car.
To be a nerd is a talent in itself because it's a skill of the mind while you can achieve an education of the heart.
A nerd is a person who likes to learn, and I have learned in this life that you should continue your education even when you start your career.
A voice of truth once communicated to me to keep writing and reading, for that is how I will improve the skill of being a writer.
When you practice being nerdlike you are setting yourself up for success, and that success can be in writing like writing poems and books.
To be a nerd is an opportunity because you may reinvent in a poem a positive perception to what it means to be a nerd.
