PLEASE do the toontown online rant i want it so badly
this post kinda got away from me, and by "got away from me" i mean this 3000 word toontown rant is Part One. there will be a Part Two to this later in which i actually talk about the fanservers i wanted to talk about. anyway let's go
toontown online (tto) was a children's mostly-turn-based subscription MMO released in 2003. after a few years of obviously being on life support, disney gave a one-month notice that tto (and several other games) would be closing on september 19th, 2013. on the same day the game closed, the fan-run server toontown rewritten (ttr) was announced (with multiple other fanservers/fangames/reimaginings being established since), and is a few months away from outliving the original game
see, one thing about tto that allowed fanservers to crop up so quickly and easily was that it had, um, interesting choices. very interesting choices. like, "kids could use a code injector to turn their backyards into giant mashed-together nightmarescapes"-level choices
youtube
(loose video description: a rabbit toon running around a chaotic mismash of rooms, obstacles, and npcs that Should Not Be There. audio caption: Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life".)
but ok let's talk about the actual game first.
toontown online (tto)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the game starts with you creating your player character - you can pick from eventually-9 species, a couple body types, and 2 dozen preset colors. the gender code is a spaghetti nightmare but you won't learn this until the fanservers come about so don't worry about it. you're then taken to the Toontorial, which explains maybe 20% of the game's mechanics before setting you loose into the main game
the toontorial also gives you the basic "plot", such as it is: Toontown is suddenly* under attack by a bunch of boring businessrobots called the Cogs. their goal is to turn toontown into a dreary gray featureless corporate hell; their business activities are so boring that they're physically painful to be around. luckily, they can't take a joke, so the toons have figured out how to defeat them: by playing pranks on them until they laugh so hard they Explode
*originally, the game installer had a little animation giving a backstory for the Cogs' creation. this was never referenced in game, removed pretty quickly, and i think even the devs kinda forgot it existed
that's...pretty much the whole story! in that context, your toon progresses through all of toontown, helping some mostly-pretty-interchangeable shopkeepers, reclaiming buildings from the cogs, eating ice cream, etc. occasionally, the cogs would Come Up With New Tricks (read: major content update) and the toons would Find A Way To Fight Back (read: same major content update). that was the closest thing to Plot, unless you count "the devs scheduled a bunch of invasions of high-tier cogs right before the game's closure". but...i doubt most the kids really expected a Plot. mickey mouse was there
the gameplay:
the Free Account
there were two...pretty different approaches to playing toontown online. when the game launched, there was a 3-day free trial to the entire game, after which you got kicked entirely until you subscribed. at some point, this was changed so that the first area, Toontown Central (TTC), was Always Free - you could do all of that area's quests/"taskline" and limited activities, indefinitely, and in theory this would make you beg your parents for the rest of the game
i have no idea if this actually got more subscriptions or not. from what i can tell it just spawned more warrior cats
Tumblr media
(source)
there were. a Lot of warrior cats. there were some other social activities, too, such as Fashion Shows (with your limited range of clothes) and Begging Subscribed Players To Summon Cog Buildings To TTC and Getting Chat Banned. ...however, as one of the subscription kids i didn't really interact with this side of the game, so i'm not the best person to talk about it
2. the Paid Account
Tumblr media
mmm look at those crisp clear graphics. hell yes
a subscription account gave you access to this whole map, along with all these areas' tasklines. to progress through the game, you must complete a variety of "ToonTasks" for the Toon Resistance (it's called that. their catchphrase is "Toons of the World, Unite!". you were giving disney money for this). these reward you by increasing your max health (your "Laff Points"), slowly unlocking more combat options, and sending you to different, higher-difficulty areas of toontown
Tumblr media
some of these tasks were...longer than others. generally, though, they all boiled down to: "just go fight some cogs"
combat:
Tumblr media
(source)
toontown battles are turn-based: the players use their attacks ("gags") first, and then any surviving cogs attack you with, usually, office equipment and puns thereof (unless the cog is e.g. a Loan Shark, in which case they can just fucking bite you). if you defeat a cog, it explodes; if the cog defeats you, you "go sad" and are sent back to the safety of the playground, lose your gag inventory, and can't leave until you heal.
early on, most your battles are 1v1, but later on almost everything is a multiplayer 4-ish-v-4.
an...interesting feature here in the game's early days was that you could only Type Your Own Words to someone who shared their "friend code" with you IRL. otherwise, you had to use this thing:
Tumblr media
(source)
you had a set list of phrases you could string together, which generally covered most the things you wanted to say. but it could get frustrating when you wanted to have a real conversation with your toontown friends! so...as the source above mentions, people obviously found ways around the system. turns out that if you let players move objects around their houses, they will use that to Draw Letters and pass their friend code along regardless
eventually - before the warrior cats, of course - disney presumably realized this system was pretty goofy (🥁) , so the game got a real chat, albeit one that functioned on a very strict whitelist. my favorite is that it didn't let you type numbers, however you could just say won too tree for hive etc. like. disney i really don't know what to tell you. anyway
Tumblr media
(isn't he charming)
cogs come in levels 1-12, with levels displayed above their heads, and as you'd expect their damage output and HP increase with their level. however, the game doesn't...actually show you cog HP? instead they have a little colored light on their chest that fades from green to red until they explode. you see numbers on all the damage you do, and you see your own HP/laff, but never the cogs'. also lategame cogs are Too Tall For You To See Their Level once they line up for battle (which isn't actually that bad but it's funny). there's a formula for HP per level, but it's never mentioned in-game. i guess someone can teach it to you but then you have to watch them type "a level tin cog has won tree too health" and is that really worth it
(as you can tell i just…don't get this. "my kid is practicing arithmetic with toontown!" - marketing angle expressly denied by god. the stealth edutainment was right there)
anyway! in theory, you have seven base combat options ("gag tracks"), which combine in a variety of ways:
toon-up, which restores your teammates' health;
trap, which does guaranteed high damage but only if someone uses lure;
lure, which stuns the cogs for a few turns and is the only way to make trap work
sound, which does low damage to every cog;
throw, which does medium-high-ish damage to one cog; multiple throws combined give percentage combo damage, and hitting a lured cog will also add percentage "knockback damage";
squirt, which is exactly like throw but less damage;
and drop, which does high damage but cannot hit lured cogs, and has low accuracy unless you hit the cog with something else first
each gag track has 6 levels, which you unlock by using that gag track a bunch. you can't carry as many of the high levels with you - i mean, putting one piano in your backpack makes perfect sense, but two is just silly, right
a few years into the game's lifespan, level 7s were added - these were huge AOE that you could regain with every 500 track EXP. there was also something called "organic gags" to promote the please-log-in-every-day gardening system
every player starts with throw and squirt, and throughout the game you slowly unlock four more gag tracks. your choices are permanent: once you have your six tracks, you're locked out of the seventh forever.
in theory, all of this opens up a huge variety of combat options!
in practice, the battle strategy looks something like this:
use sound
as mentioned, almost all of lategame will be 4v4 battles, which means sound will almost always outdamage everything on earth. you don't even need four foghorns (the highest normal sound gag) to break 200 AOE damage, and the highest health a cog EVER has is 200*. and two of the boss battles can reward you with gag restocks and heals that you can use mid-battle with no consequences (other than having to grind for those rewards a bunch). and failing THAT, you can just...ration your foghorns and take 2 turns to clear a set of cogs, interspersed with healing.
(*okay there was something called "v2.0 cogs" but they were...strange, and we just used sound anyway)
sure, once level 7s were added you could use those occasionally. and you could fall back on lure+throw if you didn't want to use your sound restocks. but even then, for most of tto's existence there was something called the "knockback bug" which. well. just look at it
Tumblr media
(link for transcript. it's tvtropes sorry)
if you are a target-audience eight-year-old this translates to "lure + throw will only do enough damage if the cogs Feel like it." like it's really just insult to injury at this point. this was the result of One misplaced variable and was not fixed until the game closed
in the tto era, if you didn't have sound, you were kinda doomed to be kicked out of every fight forever
(bonus fun fact: there were Four entire battle themes and they were 40-second midi loops. let me out)
the bosses:
each of the four cog departments has a Boss Cog. to face off against them, you have to assemble a cog disguise and collect enough merits/stock options/whatever to be allowed into the boss's office.
Tumblr media
(pictured: your convincing disguise)
when you enter, your disguise pops off due to Reasons, and you have to fight through...a bunch of waves of normal cogs. it's basically a really long normal battle. once the minions are dealt with, you have to, inexplicably, do a live-action battle against the boss themself:
youtube
(loose video description: four toons defeating the CFO by using magnet cranes to hit him in the face with safes for 32 seconds.)
the live-action rounds aren't supposed to go this quickly, but it's still...kinda strange? certain reoccurring game areas require Parkour, but there are no battles like this outside of the Four bosses. the CFO's room is the only place you see these cranes and they have A Lot Going On. the other 3 bosses have their own unique weird mechanics. before the first boss was added we neither had nor needed the ability to Jump. it's just weird
once you've defeated the boss, you're given a reward of varying usefulness (the best/most unbalanced reward type is Unites, which are a free heal or gag restock you can do inside or outside of battle. essentially lategame toons can simply choose not to die. riv2u etc.)
and, um. then you get some more merits/stock options/whatever and do it again. and again. and again. and again. and agai
the grind:
so the thing is that tto was a subscription mmo. every addition to the game had to be measured, above all, in terms of "how can we best get kids to beg their parents to give us money." this especially shows in the suit grind:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(source/source)
you have to defeat each boss 78 times in order to get all their laff points - and as you proceed, you have to defeat an increasing amount of cogs to even be allowed into the boss (although once you max you get in for free).
by far the easiest way is to run through the designated HQ facilities - basically, cog fights interspersed with some platforming or minigames. you only collect your merits/whatever at the Very End of the facility. the only way to increase what a facility gives you is if your last battle ends during an "invasion" - a timed period where One Specific Cog replaces all street cogs, usually summoned with boss rewards.
the sellbot HQ grind isn't so bad. bossbot HQ - the endest-game HQ - frequently requires you to do an hour-long facility and on six separate occasions you have to do seven of them. if the invasion ends before your final battle, you have to sit around until someone summons another. if you lose your internet connection because it's 2008, or if your parents make you come to dinner, or if hacking or the game's general bugginess cause a server reset because you're probably in the busiest district for the invasion bonus, you have spent that Entire Hour On Nothing. the CEO (bossbot cog boss) probably also takes an hour because you and your fellow players are 10
this shit, combined with laff points locked behind gardening (time-gated), racing and golfing (multiplayer minigames with absurd requirements), and fishing (RNG-based with some fish being absurdly rare. i watched my mom fish for one every day for a month), meant that maxing a toon took Years, if you managed it ever.
it wasn't, um. it wasn't good
ok so what else is wrong with this game:
i had "aged out of the game" (lol) by the early '10s, so i'm not the best person to do a writeup of the hacking/scripting situation of those days. that said, what i'm going to do is give you a few examples, and i want you to just...look at them
Tumblr media
(source)
Tumblr media
(source). early '10s youtube was funny i'm trying to decide if i miss it
Tumblr media
(source). fun thing to note here is that other players had collision, so a swarm of t-posing toons could just barricade the gag shop if they wanted to
youtube
(video description: toon who has Replaced His Head Model With An Anime Logo throwing thousands of jellybeans at everyone) (cw mild flashing just in case? and also the feather headband accessory)
i should note that the Bring Me To Life vid i started with was client-side, meaning only the player could see their technicolor hellscape. this guy's face was server-side. i do Not Think you should be able to do that
youtube
(video description: a player demonstrating use of a bot to get into the nutty river district, followed by other players using it to go to different game areas)
the above video was posted on august 17th, 2013. if you don't want to watch an Unregistered Hypercam 3 recording at about 5 frames per second, what's going on here is:
the player goes to a specific location and says a specific speedchat phrase.
a bot toon teleports to their location and provides some prompts on how to use it
the player tells the bot, via speedchat, to teleport to the (currently closed from the outside) busiest district so the player can follow
these "taxi toons" were server-sided, persisted across server resets, were made by a future fanserver dev, had younger kids referring to them as a "glitch" as if this were something that could Accidentally Happen, and stayed functional until the game closed
like...a lot of the "hacking" was just baby's first script download. this one - afaict also created by the laughing man head guy - is like...the fact that after years of no substantial game updates, someone effectively programmed their own "QOL feature" (note: not actually good for the poor mid-00s server being turned into a clown car) into a silly disney MMO and it just fucking sat there for a year is just. it's just.
i don't know what this is. this is not Playing The Game Toontown Online. this is nothing. this is everything. there are comments from 2013 on some of these videos saying stuff like "hackers killed toontown", but your game cannot have this happen if it is not already dying
and, like...it was. i'm not sure how many moderators there were by this point, but at the very end of tto, the number of active devs was One. the original devteam recently brought this up at the 20th anniversary celebration: devs just...slowly started getting pulled from the game, one at a time. there were a few updates after bossbot HQ - Field Offices, which i've basically never heard anything good about in their tto form ever; the Silly Meter, a yearly event...thing whose main function was to add unskippable dancing-inanimate-object cutscenes to your street battles; Parties, which...yknow parties were okay actually. i accept parties. but they weren't exactly a Major Game Update like the ones that had come before. in 2011 we gained the ability to Wear Hats. in 2012 the test server got some actual QOL updates that never made it to the main game; the final test server update was some maintenance in february, and then nothing for 18 months. disney was not providing enough resources to address the scripting because disney was not providing enough resources to address toontown. imagine being the last dev standing on an MMO that was older than some of its players, was losing its business model to mobile gaming, and spent most of its life falling apart at the seams. just imagine it, for a second
it couldn't have kept going, not like this.
on august 20, 2013, the closing announcement came: we had a month left of toontown online. the test server shut immediately; subscription refunds went out, and the game became actually F2P for the month; the part of the announcement that went like "we're shifting our focus to other games!" made a bunch of twelve-year-olds hate club penguin as if club penguin wouldn't also close in a few years; all the holiday events went off at once; and...
Tumblr media
there wasn't a "thanks for playing!" popup. everyone online just got kicked, all at once. it was finally over
Tumblr media
hey wait.

Cater Info Compilation part 10: Music
Cater is the lead singer of the pop music club. While intending to compete for the position via a karaoke app singing contest, it ends in a game of rock paper scissors, won by Lilia.
Lilia immediately decides he would rather be the bassist (and thus the leader) and passes the lead singer position to Cater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All three band members admit that the club does very little by way of practicing. Instead they “hang out, snack, chillax”.
Cater says “the whole music-playing bit is kind of an afterthought”, which is why “the headmage’s got his sights on us”. It seems the club is in constant danger of being disbanded.
While Kalim and Cater originally intend to get Lilia an instrument as a souvenir during the Firelit Sky event, they ultimately settle on snacks instead, as “the Pop Music Club brand”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems the club has difficulty attracting new members, with Lilia “shrieking and smashing guitars” during a club event to attract first-years, where Lilia also attempted to crowdsurf, but fell to the floor when he was not caught.
Cater says “the only one we got to join was Kalim” and “I don’t wanna lose my place to hang after class. And I definitely don’t wanna be forced into a sports club.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater does not seem fond of exercise, though in a voice line he says “It’s not that I’m bad at exercising, I just don’t like getting too fired up.”
Despite this, it seems Cater is in charge of (or at least is in a position where his opinion is taken into consideration for) Spelldrive team members, with Ace telling him to “Remember this when you pick the official team!” in Book 2 before they go against Savanaclaw in a mock-Spelldrive game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater often comments on Lilia’s singing style, saying that “When Lilia starts getting scream in Pop Music Club practice, it can get a little scary” and “Lilia basically screams out all the lyrics in this mock raspy voice”.
He bemoans being “left out” in Book 5, and when Lilia asks, “Am I not sufficient company for you?” He responds “Oh, far from it!…Just keep the improv dialed down for this, okay?”
Cater seems to prefer “poppy love songs”, but says when he tried to introduce one to the Pop Music Club Kalim and Lilia put their own spins on it, leaving it unrecognizable “but it’s not like I’m super gung-ho about anything”.
Cater also says he is a fan of electropop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the guidebook we know that there was originally a white rabbit character in Heartslabyul, and that Cater was originally supposed to be a beastman.
We don’t know if Cater himself was going to be the white rabbit, but Riddle does have a chat line that may or may not be hinting at his original incarnation: “You’re acting like the White Rabbit”.

favorites of all time!
way way way back when i set up a spam account so i could send myself things i wanted to read later. essentially turning that chat into my TBR. i have sorted through them & i think the first thing to do with this rebrand is to give you a list of my favorite fics of all time. below you will find a list of my favorite reads with their writers & a smol why for it making the list. these are in no particular order. please enjoy!
*this list is 18+. Minors do not interact!*
list below the cut.
*most of these fics either are smut or contain some through slow burn structure. Please read each author's warnings for them before you engage. *
from the last 7 years, i have chosen 20 fics that i LOVE. here we go.
from @deansdirtylittlesecretsblog we have a story i remember getting me excited about what kind of writing could be on tblr. "the arrangement" a lost love fic. 9 parts of love & angst.
2. @sis-tafics out here with a sweet sweet physical innocence trope with the hottie dean winchester. "our little secret"
3. @hrina wrote such a beautiful H. Styles fic about his character in dunkirk. "Il Ritorno" is the first part of 3 fics. i love the little coming home to a new place & new people plot.
4. @supernatural-jackles is the author of one of the only fics to make me cry. "hey handsome" i remember reading this sobbing because i felt the emotions written into this SO deeply. I reached out to them & let them know how much i loved it. & i still love it so to this day.
5. @winchest09 is adding our first dark fic to this list. the slow burn on this one is so so so so good. i found this one a long long time ago & i would say it is one of the first fics that got me to explore the mafia verse "life for rent"
6. @negans-lucille-tblr is giving us another spoicy series up in here & it even has a sequal!!!!! (look down one) the ultimate D/s winchester series. it's oh so good! "you've got me beggin"
7. & for the sequel "Mercy" this series is so good i have re-read both 2-3 times. it felt like crack the first read on both of these lol.
8. oh oh oh okay! this next. one from @pink1031 is probably one of my absolute favorite stucky series. "our best girl" was the fic that sent me down a rabbit hole of stucky fics. i was addicted after this one.
9. @pink1031 is back at it again with the ONE fic on this list i know i have read a minimum of 6 times. it is THAT good. "dirty little secret" was so scandalous and sexy. a J2 fic that had me coming back for more all the time. my escapism really shined with this one.
10. i remember finding "lemon drop" by @impala-dreamer i love the dynamic written here between Sam Winchester x the reader. the intimacy in this one-shot is beautiful. this is something i wish i could have at the end of my days or when i feel like the world is too heavy. i felt seen through this fic.
11. @tuiccim 's style of writing is something i adore & admire. I fell in love through "almost had me believing it" it is truly a work of art. I was immersed into this undercover mission with my man BUCKY BARNES.
12. oh & another from @tuiccim with "Terrigenisis" this is such a good poly-stucky fic. the way it was written felt like it could have been canon.
13. WOAH now! this next one written by @world-of-aus is ICONIC. the universe that is "starkhub" is just so delectable. i remember when it was being published in the beginning i was like a dog with a bone. i will never get enough. I can't wait to see where else it gets taken.
14. this next one is quite possibly one of my favorite mob fics. I have linked the first installment of these lovely smutty stucky fics. "tell me what you want" is the first step into such a delicious universe. thank you @angrythingstarlight for all you write.
15. an absolute banger from @sagechanoafterdark with "codename: Lazarus". i can't exclaim loud enough how good this one is. it had me on the edge of my seat. so dynamic. the order in which you read the parts for this one changes the perspective. don't worry they have put an excellent order at the bottom of the masterlist. :)
16. @avintagekiss24 i wanna start out by saying that I love the space you have created with your blog. when i found "lay me down in the tall-green grass" i thought i found fanfic heaven. i will cherish it always. i kept coming back to this one-shot to relive it as much as possible.
17. i've been thinking about "stained like georgia clay" by @georgiapeach30513 a lot lately. i remember binge-reading it & soaking up every droplet of goodness i could. ;) & that thunderstorm scene 🥵. i'll leave you with that...
18. here lies the "howling comandos tattoo au" that altered my brain chemistry just a little. @navybrat817 stole my heart long before this one dropped. however, this au had me sitting patiently waiting with my hands folded.... um no i was mentally ON MY KNEES.
19. i can confidently say that @georgiapeach30513 's "you were the one" is my favorite Lloyd hansen series ever. i crave a fics that are this good. it all started from a one-shot & then i found out a prequel was being written to it & i screamed in excitement.
20. A quality fic that i have had actual dreams about in the past. comes from @themhoodgirlz . for my 5sos girlies out there "close" tingles my brain in the right ways. i reminisce about the dynamic these two have. years ago when i was a BIG 5sos stan i lowkey hoped & dreamed for that to be me lol.
alright, alright, alright. that concludes my first rec list. I want to thank all of these amazing, amazing authors who have shared their skills & talents with the world. your works have given me sweet escapes, brightened my days, & expanded my love for all of the characters & ppl you write for. <3 all my love,
prynne

the power of love, part 13 (steddie, stobin, steve whump fic)
Alternate ending S4: Steve has a habit of surviving near death experiences then getting sick for no reason. And Eddie and those fatal bat bites? After an impossible feat of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from Steve, he’s mysteriously fixed. So, Eddie’s back to being banished, this time with Steve and Robin in tow. Eddie’s healing, but Steve isn’t… and life gets even more confusing, when Eddie develops feelings for Steve, which aren’t entirely unrequited.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 14
(also on AO3 here and as part of my steve whump fic series)
Steve POV
When Steve’s finished slumping forward and retching, he’s so through with everything.
“You did good with the lightning, kid.” Hopper scrapes Steve’s hair from his face. He’s still got an arm about him, pretty much all that’s stopping Steve collapsing onto the dirt. “Let’s hope we don’t need it again, huh?”
Steve sniffs, takes the kleenex Hopper offers and dabs his lips. As his super-fast breaths finally slow, his brain kicks off:
I got superpowers! Henderson’s gonna flip! Shame about the glitches, what with the blacking out and puking my guts out. The sound of a rushing river distracts him. He’s been hearing it, on and off, for hours.
He kneels a little more upright. Hopper gives him some space, passes him some water. “How far exactly have you travelled from Hawkins since the accident at Lover’s Lake?”
The accident? Oh yeah. I died. Twice.
Steve hasn’t told anyone about his second joyride into the afterlife in the Soviet base. Somehow, being an idiot as a kid is way easier to share. A damp breeze rattles through the trees, slapping him back to the present.
“Steve?” prompts Hopper.
“I… uh, I played basketball all over the state.” Even after drinking, his voice is a croaky mess. “Swim meets, too. Been a few times to Indianapolis. I was okay.”
Hopper scratches his stubbly jaw, looking almost as bushed as Steve feels. “How okay?”
“To be honest, I was kicked off the starting squad after a couple of the more distant games. Crappy performances, and I got humiliatingly sick on the bus.” It all makes sense now. “I survived.”
“Fine. You’re a tough guy. You’re gonna have to tough your way through this journey. I can’t leave you behind.”
“Eleven survived in the woods for—”
“At that stage, she didn’t have half the US army on her back.” He pats Steve, powerful enough to rock him. “She’d gotten experience with her powers, too.”
Steve can’t fathom if he’s feeling slightly patronised or dead relieved. All he really wants is to lie somewhere quiet and sleep for a year. Instead, he must drag himself to his feet—or, in the event, he lets Hopper do the dragging. He can’t help asking, though:
“Chief, can you hear running water? Like, loud.”
And getting louder. Niagara loud, in fact.
“No. Why? Can you?”
“Oh… um, maybe not.”
Okay. It’s totally in my head. Why aren’t I panicking harder?
When they reach the Humvee, Robin and Eddie are no longer at each other’s throats. On the contrary, they’re huddled in some deep and meaningful chat. As one, they slam Steve with stricken bunny-rabbit stares, which make him want to laugh so goddamn loud.
During the torturous drive, he sleeps, and his mind drifts back to the Soviet base. He’s caught in that furious red tide, which roars through his aching head. It’s echoed by a caressing whisper: You’ll know when it’s time to go home.
“Yeah, I got it. Shut the fuck up.”
“Rude! Wasn’t saying anything.”
“Huh?” He lifts his cheek from Robin’s shoulder. Her worried, tear-stained eyes overshadow the amusement ruffling her lips. Jesus, I’m breaking my friends! “Dreaming. Sorry.”
He gingerly rolls his shoulders. The side in the sling twinges miserably, and yet… Now he knows he’s gotta ditch the whole bunch of them, the fug of sickness is clearing. He feels better. Much better, in fact.
He keeps the news tight.
If he plays poorly, they won’t expect him to sneak away, right? Though, the plan pitches him another problem—when he does escape, how can he stop Robin and Eddie coming after him? Eddie, particularly, would be in beyond deep shit if he got taken.
Inevitably, the Humvee gets stuck again. When Hopper asks Steve to take the wheel, Steve grabs up a green army notebook he’d spotted in the footwell, a stubby pencil also. He scribbles fast, between revving the engine.
“Eddie, I love you. Please don’t follow me. Steve x”
I love you.
Wtf?
When he’d blundered down that path with Nance, he’d been licking the scars two-and-a-half years’ later. With Robin, of course, things turned out different.
Then Eddie Munson happened.
To be fair, knowing Eddie as he did now, he doesn’t actually believe Eddie would vomit on the note. Maybe only cackle a while. Either way, Steve would no way in hell obey a love letter, telling him not to follow, from anybody he cared about.
Given recent form, he doesn’t think Eddie would either.
He scrunches the note into his pocket then scribbles furiously at ‘take two’:
“Eddie, DON’T FOLLOW ME. You make me sick. Steve.”
Jesus, that’s hopeless. You make me sick? He doesn’t mean that, apart from… It’s sorta true. Steve detests it, however, longs to try again. He’s out of time.
He stuffs the second note into Eddie’s pack, as Hopper opens the door. “We’re gonna have to walk from here. Think you can make it?”
“Dunno,” says Steve. For purely tactical reasons. Likewise, he doesn’t volunteer to carry many supplies.
As they trudge their way through the trees, his chances to run aren’t happening. Everybody’s way quieter than usual—edgy, like during that drive in the RV before they faced down Vecna. When he tries subtly falling behind, they all jump to help him. Even worse, they reach the liaison spot way sooner than he expects. Thankfully, for Steve, the car isn’t there.
“Where the hell are they?” Hopper gets out a compass to check they’re in the right spot.
“Because compasses are so accurate near Hawkins,” gripes Steve, his pulse thudding madly. It really is now or never, and why the hell hasn’t he got a better plan?
“We’re far enough out that the gates shouldn’t make a difference, right?” Eddie says.
How do we know? How do we know that Vecna hasn’t swallowed Hawkins whole, while we’re running away pissing ourselves yellow?
Steve bites this back. It’s not like he wants them coming with him. He sits down on the verge, presses his face to his bent knees. Soon as he dares, he gets up again.
“Where you going?” asks Robin, clambering up also.
“I need to pee,” says Steve. Eddie’s on his feet too. Steve can’t look him in the eye, and the words nearly choke him. I don’t need a babysitter. Shoo!”
He walks back into the forest, upping his pace as soon as the trees obscure him. It’s gonna be a long trek, he’s hardly got any supplies, and he’s got a weird sense that, no, he isn’t gonna get through this time. He follows the sound of the water, because it seems obvious that he should.
And he feels more torn apart than ever.
The tug back to Hawkins is overwhelming, but the tug back toward Robin and Eddie? It’s like somebody has wound a thread around his heart, attached it to the pair of them. As he strides farther away, the thread snares tight, like that rope around his wrist did.
He’s annoyed—if not exactly surprised—to hear somebody thrashing through the forest behind him. Robin yells, “Steve! Steeeeeve!”
He finally locates a small stream, which seems to be the source of the supernaturally loud torrent. He skids down the bank, landing in about three inches of water, and crouches low.
Go by, Robin. Dammit, turn back.
She tumbles into the stream a yard off, landing on her ass with a loud splash and a louder squeak.
“Uuuuugh!” She takes the hand he offers, and they scramble to their feet together. “Steve, what the hell are you doing?”
“What the hell are you doing?”
She flicks pond scum from her legs and grimaces spectacularly. “Stopping you being an IDIOT! And since when were you not sick? God, I was so worried! Were you faking?”
“You know I wasn’t. I got… fixed.”
“Fixed? Like, HOW?”
He urgently presses a finger to his lips. “Sssssh! Keep your voice down! Look, I don’t know exactly, and I can’t go back. Hopper will make me get in that car.”
“He can’t force you.” Her glare is louder than her voice was.
“Whatever. He and El need to go. You and Eddie need to go.”
“You heard what Hopper said. They’ll torture you for information—they could kill you.”
“Been there, done that, Robin.”
“This isn't funny.”
“You think I don’t know that?” Steve sighs hard, belatedly noticing the stream has breached his sneakers. “All I do know is that I feel more myself already, turning around.” Following the water. “Also, Hop’s right—El can’t defeat Vecna with the military gunning for her. I don’t know exactly what I can do yet, but I have to try, whatever it is. So, please, Robin. Go back. Tell the others you couldn’t find me.”
“Eddie won’t leave without—”
“Which is why I gotta move! Take care, all right?”
He wants to hug her so bad. Instead, he sloshes away.
“Ugh, slow down!”
“Seriously?” He turns about suddenly. She nearly smashes into him and takes the opportunity to get right in his face.
“I am so mad with you! You made me run after you, my butt is drenched, and now you’re making me walk along a horrible ditch, all the way back to Hawkins?”
“It’s the quickest route.” He doesn’t know how he knows, only that he does. He turns around, wades onwards. The damp never bothered me anyway…
“Then why don’t we follow the bank, Steve?”
She has a point. “Oh. Okay.” They clamber up the sides, start following the stream from above. It’s as slippery as the riverbed and overgrown with treacherously tangly weeds.
“Eeeeeew! When this is over,” says Robin, “I am never, ever venturing into the totally-not-great outdoors again.”
“You don’t have to do any of this, Robin.”
Her latest scowl is more jokey—and fond—than he figures he deserves. “Shut up, Dingus. You know I do.”

Your Turn to Roll--A Project Fear Fanfiction: Chapter 1-Character Creation
Chapter 2/2
One of your interests is a game called Dungeons and Dragons (DND), a table-top roleplaying game filled with daring fights, monstrous creatures, and numerous bonds you enrich through each session the story follows. With live play shows like Critical Role as well as media portrayal like in Stranger Things, DND has gained many new players in recent years. It is a topic you have brought up a ton to your friends Alex, Chelsea, Dakota, and Tanner as you wanted to tell them about the shenanigans that ensued during one of your sessions.
On this particular day, you were going down a YouTube rabbit hole when a notification from your group chat came through. After pausing the video, you open your messages to see what was sent.
“I finally looked more into Dungeons and Dragons since you’ve mentioned it a lot, and I got to say, I’m interested in trying it out,” Chelsea had sent.
“Same,” the boys responded in quick succession of one another.
“I’m so glad you’re interested in it! I can try to take a crack at running a game to help ease you guys into it all,” you quickly respond with a huge grin on your face.
“You’ll surely do well with it,” Dakota encourages you.
“Yeah, if anyone could do it, it would definitely be you,” Alex says.
“Thanks guys. We will need to start off with character creation before going right into fighting things and other story elements. What day works the best for y’all?” you asked, already super pumped that your friends want to understand your interests just a bit more.
“This Thursday I’m pretty free,” Tanner answers.
“Same here,” Chelsea replies.
“It would have to be after 6pm for me. Editing takes a lot of time,” Dakota specifies.
“Thursday works for me,” Alex states.
“Let’s try for 7pm on Thursday at my place then. Sound good?” you text back.
“Sounds like a plan” they all respond.
Thursday at 7pm came quickly and soon you were all around your table. You placed a character sheet in front of them as well as a pencil to start the process off. Once everything is set up, the group looks to you for further instructions.
“Okay. I’m going to start by asking questions that will help you figure out what class your character will be. Think of a class almost as being what your job entails. Now, would you like to be able to use magic or not?” you explain before asking.
“Magic would be cool,” Tanner says with a sparkle in his eye.
“Yeah, it has always intrigued me in fiction,” Chelsea enthusiastically responds.
“I definitely want to try using magic,” Dakota replies.
“It’s interesting, but will it be complicated?” Alex asks.
“I will admit, magic can be a hard part to understand in DND. We are starting at level one, so we can slowly understand it more and more as we go. I know someone who started playing DND with a spellcasting class and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also know someone who started off with a magic-using class and wished they hadn’t. I do not want to deter you from anything that interests you and will always help with any questions you have,” you clearly state.
Alex nods before responding with, “I think I want to start off without magic then.”
You smile before turning to the others to ask, “Do you still want to play spellcasters after hearing that it can be difficult? As I mentioned, I want you to play what interests you.”
The three nod their heads before Chelsea replies with “I always like a challenge.”
“Great! Since we already have one diverging from everyone else, are you guys alright with me helping Alex first and then come back to you guys for clarifying questions?” you inquire.
You get nods from Alex, Dakota, and Chelsea, as well as a “Go for it,” from Tanner.
Turning towards Alex, you question, “How would you describe the type of fighting you would want to do? Would you describe it like the Hulk? Using martial arts? Sneaky? Having archery or a long-distance focus? A variety of weapons and armor?”
Alex ponders for a moment before replying with “I like the idea of a sneaky character.”
“It seems like with that response that you would enjoy playing a rogue. I will pull up the rogue information from 5e.tools and you can start putting in that info onto your character sheet like proficiencies and features associated with level one. Abbreviate where you need to as this sheet is what you will use even as you level up. Wherever you have a choice to make, go for what interests you. Some parts like hit points and modifiers I will go over once everyone has figured out their race and class. Some of the choices you can hover over, and it will explain a bit more,” you expound while handing your laptop over to Alex.
He quickly takes your computer, puts it down in front of him, and begins to write. You then pick up the spell list sheets and hand them to the other three, stating, “We will look at the sheet I am passing around later after figuring out more of your character, but I would rather hand them to you now to make sure you have it.”
Dakota, Chelsea, and Tanner all put the spell sheet to the side and then focus back on you.
“While I was working with Alex, did any of you think about where you’ve obtained your magic or how you would use it? It wasn’t a requirement for you guys to have done so, I will provide examples like I did for Alex when it came to fighting styles, but I thought I would ask,” you question.
Tanner and Dakota shake their heads “no” before Chelsea speaks up, “There is a class that learns magic through school and books, right? I think I remember reading something about that and it intrigued me.”
“Yes, wizards carry around a spell book of all the magic they have learned through the years and can even add to the book. Was that what you were thinking?” you respond.
Chelsea nods her head, a glimmer of fascination in her eye.
“Sorry to interrupt, but how should I denote expertise versus proficiency on something?” Alex asks.
“I often use a check mark for expertise and just filling in the bubble for proficiency. You can do whatever helps you differentiate the two though and even make a note of what each thing means if that helps,” you mention.
Alex nods yet again before quickly putting down the last of the rogue class information. Once he is done, he hands you back your laptop.
You quickly click to the wizard information on the same site before handing the laptop over to Chelsea, saying, “I’ve pulled up the wizard information for you. You can start putting it onto your character sheet like proficiencies and features associated with level one.  As I mentioned before to Alex, wherever you have a choice to make, go for what interests you. Some of the choices you can hover over, and it will explain a bit more. We’ll go over hit points and modifiers later. Abbreviate wherever you see fit.”
Chelsea immediately grabs your laptop and starts getting to work, allowing you to draw your attention to Dakota and Tanner.
“Okay, spellcasters vary greatly. Some are born with it while some must specifically and continuously learn it, the latter being the wizard class that Chelsea chose. Some magic comes through nature while some comes through the arts like music. Some…” you start listing.
“Wait. Magic can be connected to music?” Tanner interrupts.
“Yes! A person from that class is called a bard and it is a very fun class to play, from my personal experience. Does that interest you?” you ask with a grin on your face.
Tanner nods before continuing, “I like the idea a lot, but are they solely a spellcaster?”
“All classes have a physical weapon of some sort, but people can create characters who almost always go for the spells rather than the weapon. For bard, there are a couple of subclasses down the line that focus more on combat with weapons rather than with spells if that is what you wish to do. You would still get magic no matter what route you go with when it comes to the bard class,” you state.
“That’s something I would want to do,” Tanner tells you.
You give him a thumbs up before turning to Chelsea to see her progress. She was just finishing the last part of her sentence before she clicks on something on the laptop and turns toward you with the computer in her hands, the bard page on 5e.tools already up.
“Thought I could help set you up for the handoff,” Chelsea discloses.
“Thank you,” you respond before handing the laptop off to Tanner, “You can start putting in the bard information onto your character sheet like proficiencies and features associated with level one. As I mentioned before, wherever you have a choice to make, go for what interests you. Some of the choices you can hover over, and it will explain a bit more. We’ll go over hit points and modifiers once everyone has a class and race. Abbreviate as you go since we’ll be using this sheet as you guys level up.”
Promptly, Tanner takes the computer and begins jotting down the bard information. Dakota was the last one to figure out what class he should play. You bring your attention to him, ready to help him out.
“Did any of the spellcaster descriptions I’ve given so far seem interesting to you or should I keep going? There are other spellcasting classes I haven’t described yet, so don’t fret if what you’ve heard so far isn’t interesting you,” you inquire.
Dakota shakes his head “no,” so you continue, “What are your thoughts on having your magic being connected to a being?”
“What do you mean?” Dakota asks with an inquisitive look.
“Well, some classes are connected to gods and use their divine power to help. Some have made a deal with an entity which granted them their magic,” you reply.
“Making a deal with an entity sounds…evil yet intriguing,” Dakota remarks.
“Well, dealings with entities are not always evil. Yes, some deals are made just to gain more power, but some make deals to help themselves out of bad situations or to help those around them,” you clarify.
“So, a deal could be made to prove oneself as capable of something?” Dakota questions.
“Yes,” you simply state, “I’m assuming you’re asking these questions because that is the route that intrigues you the most. Is that correct?”
Dakota nods.
“The class that makes a deal with an entity to receive magic is called a warlock. It is one of two classes that picks its subclass at level one. So, what kind of being do you want to make a pact with? I can give examples, if need be,” you ask.
Dakota ponders a bit before responding, “Maybe I’m essentially making myself, but are their entities that revolve around life and death?”
“There are, and there is nothing wrong with essentially making yourself. I made the ideal version of myself in my first campaign, and most of my characters usually have a little bit of me in them too. For the patron, there are two subclass choices: The Undying and The Undead. The two are similar, with some small differences. I can pull up both of their information for you to compare and decide from there if you like,” you suggest.
Dakota nods. As you are about to turn to see Tanner’s progress, your laptop is in front of your face.
“I just finished and heard it was about time for the handoff,” Tanner says with a smile on his face.
“Thank you,” you tell him, returning the grin.
You quickly pull up the warlock information, including the two subclasses, before handing the computer off to Dakota for his turn to jot down his class information on his character sheet, making note to abbreviate words as he goes so he can continue to have room on his character sheet as the adventure continues.
“Sorry for the wait in between everything, I am just trying to get everyone on the same page,” you apologize to the others.
“We get it, don’t worry about us,” Chelsea states.
“This is a learning process for us, so it’s understandable that we’re taking even character creation slowly,” Alex joins in.
You nod your head in acknowledgment at your friends’ responses before continuing, “That’s great to hear. Thinking back to what Dakota noticed about his choices, do you think you are creating a fantasy version of yourself or some completely different person?”
The three waiting for the next step start thinking before looking at one another and laughing a bit.
“I think I’m unintentionally creating myself too,” Tanner states.
“Same,” Alex and Chelsea reply in unison.
“As I said, there is nothing wrong with that. This could help with your character backstories if you want,” you mention.
Dakota looks up from writing at that moment, stating, “I think I’ll go with The Undying as my patron. Also, I like the idea of these characters being us. Maybe we’re Project Fear in this world too!” before continuing to write.
Chelsea, Tanner, and Alex nod their head in agreement before stating almost simultaneously, “I like that idea.”
“Having your characters already know each other helps with why you all would come together for the adventure. Seeing as you guys like the idea of being Project Fear in the game, a shared background may help support that. We can discuss this more after y’all figure out your races as well,” you mention.
That is the moment when Dakota finished writing and handed you back your computer. Taking it from his hands, you look at your friends to see anticipation and wonder in their expressions as they await what is next.
You place your laptop on the table in front of you before saying, “Alright. One part, done. Next is race. I want to make it clear that because you’ve mentioned that you’re making yourselves that you don’t automatically have to make your character human. Again, do what interests you. There are a lot more options for races compared to the class you play, so this may take a little bit. Do any of you have an idea of a fantasy race you would want to play? If it has been in a fictional fantasy world before, then it is highly likely that you can play it.”
“I want to play a vampire!” Dakota exclaims.
“While vampires can be in a game of DND, they are not a playable race,” you mention, noticing a frown on Dakota’s face, “but, there is a race that is part vampire called a dhampir which is playable. Let me pull up that information for you.”
Dakota smiles hearing that he could play something close to what he wanted rather than the idea being scraped completely. You pull up the dhampir information on 5e.tools before giving the laptop back to Dakota.
“You could have kept the laptop had we known you would be the first to figure out the race you wanted to play, but hindsight is 20-20. For ability score improvements, leave the additions next to your ability spaces as they will be accounted for once you figure stats out. Dhampirs are more customizable with where these score improvements go, so I would suggest looking at your saving throw proficiencies as a guide on where they could go. For reference, a size medium creature would be around our size while a small creature is almost child size,” you clarify a bit.
Dakota yet again takes the laptop before jotting down the information onto his character sheet.
Again, you turn back to the rest of the group before proceeding, “What about you guys? Any fantasy races that have interested you in the past?”
“An elf would be interesting,” Chelsea states.
“I was thinking the same thing,” Alex responds soon after.
“Lucky for you, elf is a playable race. We will need to narrow down which type of elf you would like to play as there are a few subraces of them. Some of the subraces may go along well with your class choice. Is that a route you would want to go?” you question Alex and Chelsea.
The two look at each other with agog expressions before turning their gazes back at you.
“I…I didn’t expect there to be options when it came to elves, so I’m down to hear your suggestions,” Alex replies.
Chelsea nods her head at what Alex told you, agreeing with what he had to say.
“Okay, do you have a preference as to who I suggest a subrace to first?” you ask.
“I think Chelsea should go before me as I went first when it came to picking my class,” Alex suggests.
“Sounds good to me,” Chelsea agrees.
“Alright. Chelsea, I would suggest going with a high elf. They are often noted as having a keen mind as well as knowing a decent bit about magic. To me, that seems like a decent fit for a wizard,” you propose.
“I like the sounds of this,” Chelsea responds while nodding.
Seeing the lull in the conversation, Dakota pipes up from his writing, “I noticed for dhampirs that they could originally be of a different race. I was reading more into some of the races and Kalashtar seemed interesting. Since that race doesn’t provide other proficiencies or other movement speeds, could I choose the Quori language to know?”
“By all means go for it,” you answer.
Dakota quickly finishes up his writing before handing the laptop back to you. Before handing the laptop to Chelsea, you click on the high elf information.
“Elves do live a lot longer than humans, so if you want to go down the route of these characters being you, then add maybe 100 years onto your actual age. As mentioned with Dakota, for ability score improvements, leave the additions next to your ability spaces as they will be accounted for once you figure stats out,” you place the laptop in front of her before pointing to the references tab, “Here you’ll be able to find the languages tab and can look at the other possibilities available to your character that is offered for high elves.”
Chelsea starts to jot down the high elf information, leading you to bring your attention to Alex.
“For you, I was thinking the mark of shadow elf. They gain some bonuses for sneaking. With these bonuses, you will get a very tiny bit of magic: a cantrip and a once per long rest use of a spell when you hit level three. Is that alright?” you inquire.
“What would the spell and cantrip be?” Alex asks.
“The cantrip is called minor illusion. You could create a sound or an image with it, which could come in handy if you need some form of distraction for sneaking around. The spell you would learn at level three would be invisibility, which I think is self-explanatory. Had you chosen a spellcasting class, you’d have access to more spells and such,” you explain.
“Sorry to interrupt, but what is the difference between a cantrip and a spell?” Tanner asks.
“You don’t have to apologize for that; it’s an excellent question. Cantrips don’t need any preparation and can be cast at will. Spells, on the other hand, need some preparation such as a certain amount of time or materials needed for it to work. Spells can be cast at a limited amount per short or long rest, depending on the class you chose, while cantrips have no limits on the number of times you can use it,” you clarify.
“I like the idea of having a tiny bit of magic since it did interest me. It won’t be as overwhelming as a class that has many spells and cantrips I feel,” Alex acknowledges with a smile.
“Glad to hear it,” you reply.
At that moment, Chelsea finished what she was writing. Before handing the laptop back to you, she clicked on what you were assuming to be the mark of shadow elf page, much like she clicked on the bard page after writing down the wizard information on her character sheet. With the laptop now in your hand, you can see that your assumption was right.
“Thanks for setting it up again,” you thank her with a nod before handing it over to Alex.
“Don’t mention it,” she replies with a smile.
With the resources in front of him, Alex begins jotting down the mark of shadow elf information onto his character sheet.
“Just a reminder that elves do live a lot longer than humans, so if you want to go down the route of these characters being you, then add maybe 100 years onto your actual age. As mentioned before, for ability score improvements, leave the additions next to your ability spaces as they will be accounted for once you figure stats out,” you remind Alex, who nods at your comment while continuing to write.
The last to figure out their character’s race is Tanner, so you quickly turn towards him.
“When looking more into DND, I ended up going down a rabbit hole of playable races. It seemed so intriguing that there is such a variety. Now, I don’t remember all of them, but I do remember that some can fly, and that intrigued me the most,” he mentions before you could ask any clarifying questions.
It seemed that everyone was a bit shocked by Tanner’s admission, but you could not be happier knowing that your friends were well and truly trying to understand a game you love so much.
With a smile glued to your face, you proceed with “That’s great to hear that you found some interest when trying to understand DND a bit more. You are right, there are a few races that can fly. I will need to ask a few clarifying questions to narrow it down a little more. First question: would you rather be a small creature or a medium creature? As I mentioned with Dakota, a small creature is roughly the size of a child while medium is around our size.”
Tanner ponders for a moment before responding, “I rather like my own height, so medium creature.”
“Okay. Now, would you want to look like an animal? Some of the flying races look like birds,” you question.
Again, Tanner takes some time to think before saying, “I don’t think so. If I’m going down the route of playing a version of myself, I’d rather look more like me.”
You nod your head, narrowing down the options quickly, before asking, “Alright, how far away from looking like yourself are you willing to go? There are 2 possible options left, each diverging at least a little bit from the standard human appearance.”
“I think sticking as close to looking like myself as possible would mean no extra appendages like a tail,” Tanner replies after taking a moment.
“Well, we narrowed it down to the protector aasimar then. They have partial lineage to celestial beings like gods and angels. I think it is fitting that we ended up here as aasimars have healing capabilities outside of the class they choose and you’re always one to help your friends like when you were booking it to Chelsea at Randolph County Infirmary. Protector aasimar cannot fly all the time though, I hope that that is okay,” you explain.
“Is it like how Alex will get a once per rest spell at a certain level due to being a mark of shadow elf?” Tanner asks.
“Yes, exactly like that. Having your wings out will give extra damage on an attack or spell, so they limit the use of it,” you answer.
Noticing that Alex has long since finished jotting down his character’s racial information, you grab the laptop back and bring up the protector aasimar information. The hand off of the computer and a reminder to leave racial ability score improvements next to their subsequent boxes happen shortly after, leaving a moment of respite. You look around the table at your friends, joy overflowing from you. Your friends are inching closer and closer to playing DND with you with every choice they make, and you could not be happier that they were all willing to try it out.
“How much more do we have left?” Dakota asks, grabbing your attention.
“Once Tanner is finished writing down his character’s race, what is left would be your character’s background, your ability scores/proficiencies, and spells for our spellcasters. You’ve mostly figured out your backstories as you’ve already mentioned wanting to be Project Fear in this world too. I know it seems like a lot, but there was the thought of you all having the same background so we would not need to go one-by-one,” you expound.
Everyone nods their head at what you said and soon enough, Tanner is finished with his character information. The laptop is soon returned to you and your friends wait with bated breaths to hear what you have to say next.
“Next up is background. This is what your character was before adventuring and can tie into the adventure as well. Since you guys were thinking of being Project Fear, could I suggest one that might fit all of you?” you inquire.
You get a nod from the four of them before continuing, “One background is called the entertainer. I think it may be self-explanatory on what that would be like. Do you think this would be the right background for all of you?”
The crew look at one another before they all respond with a resounding “Yes!”
You chuckle a little bit before asking, “Since there is only one computer, would you rather all look at the information together on the laptop, have me read it out, or if you want to search for it on your phones, you are more than happy to. I know we didn’t start out with the other decisions with everyone’s electronics out, but I didn’t want you guys being too overwhelmed with the many options.”
“I’m fine with using my phone for this,” Dakota states.
“Same here. Plus, don’t worry about only now having us use our electronics, we get it after hearing all the questions you asked to help narrow everything down,” Alex responds.
“Exactly! I’ll use my phone as well,” Tanner replies.
With a quick look at her phone, Chelsea responds, “My phone is almost dead. Can I use the laptop?”
“Go right ahead,” you say while handing the computer to her before continuing, “For those using your phones, the site is 5e.tools. From there, click on the icon with the word ‘backgrounds’ on it. Then, you will scroll through the options until you find ‘entertainer’ which then you will click on and write down the information. One of your tool proficiencies as an entertainer is a musical instrument, but I am fine with you guys having it be some form of paranormal equipment that you use on the show if you so wish. Also, your equipment section will mention that you have a favor of an admirer. This can be as simple as the Project Fear bracelet or your cross necklace. It does not need to be like one of the examples listed.”
As soon as you are finished explaining everything, the quartet starts writing down all the necessary information. This gives you a moment to think about the campaign. You know you need to have the paranormal somehow involved, especially with how they still want to stick to being Project Fear. Maybe make it so for some reason ghosts aren’t appearing anymore? Nah, that would limit their abilities and seem unfair. A necromancer controlling all the ghosts? That feels like a campaign many people have probably done before.
Your thoughts were cut short when the dull thump of four pencils hit the table as you felt all eyes back on you.
“Okay, next up is figuring out our attributes, which directly ties into our proficiencies, hit points, armor class, and initiative. We will be using a system called twenty-seven-point buy. Each of the six attributes starts at an eight. You have twenty-seven points to add to your attributes. The maximum any of these attributes can be before adding in racial bonuses is fifteen. Remember what your proficient saving throws are to gauge where a score should be its highest and where you may not need to add much to. Constitution affects your hit points, so I would suggest at least adding a couple points there. There will be more to explain afterwards. You can use your phones, the laptop, or if you have scrap paper like the back of the spell sheet to calculate everything before putting in the information.”
With that, the crew start to figure out their stats. Part way through, Dakota looks up at you and asks, “There are two spaces per area for the attributes. Why is that?”
“That’s an excellent question. One spot is for your attribute score while the other is for its modifier. There is no right way to put either number in, though I have heard many people put the modifier in the box and the score into the oval. The modifier is used for proficiencies and skills and is derived from the attribute score,” you describe.
“So how do we figure out the modifier?” Chelsea inquires.
“To get your modifier, you subtract ten from your attribute score, divide that number by two, and round it down. The modifier is what the skills associated with an attribute will be, as well as the saving throw. If you are proficient with something, you add your proficiency bonus to the modifier. At level one, the proficiency bonus is a plus two. For expertise, the proficiency bonus is doubled and then added to the modifier,” you clarify.
The crew nod their heads while continuing to calculate and write down their modifiers, allowing you to think more about the campaign yet again. You have an idea on a non-player character (NPC) to add to the campaign who may give them their over-arching mission. The idea of a banished bard trying to free himself from wrongful exile and persecution after previously being considered a hero seems like an interesting jump off. Possibly an overarching theme of not everything is as it seems or even don’t judge a book by its cover seems like a good work around. But where to start the party off with trying to help said bard?
Again, the clicking of pencils hitting the table is what draws you back from your imagination. You look at the crew and say, “Alright. Next few steps will be easier. Look at the spot labelled ‘initiative.’ This will be added into your roll when figuring out the turn order of a combat. You will add your dexterity modifier in this space.”
With quick nods, the crew jot down the number and allow you to continue, “That same modifier will help you figure out your armor class, which is the number an enemy needs to meet or beat to do damage. Leather armor is eleven plus your Dex modifier while no armor is ten plus the modifier.”
The crew make rapid calculations, write down the number, and await further instructions from you.
“We’re close to being done with character creation. This step will be the last one for Alex to hear instructions from. One of the most important numbers to know from your character sheet is your maximum hit points. Much like a video game, this number determines your health status in and out of combat. Hitting zero means you are unconscious, meaning you will be rolling death saving throw to see if your character does die or gets stabilized. 3 failed saves, meaning rolling nine or lower, equal death. Your party can still heal you in your unconscious state, bringing you back up into the fight. To determine your level one HP, look at what your hit die is. The highest number will be used plus your constitution modifier. For other levels, you will roll the hit die and add your con modifier to determine hit points with the average number being the minimum for this campaign,” you explain.
In the blink of an eye, the crew notes their hit points. Alex places his pencil down and reclines back in his chair, finally done with his sheet.
You chuckle a bit before looking to Dakota, Chelsea, and Tanner and stating, “The last step that I will explain is spell sheets. You each have a certain number of cantrips and spells that you know per level. It varies per class. I’m not sure if you had noted down these numbers exactly, so you can go back to 5e.tools to look it over again should you need it. As mentioned earlier when Tanner asked about it, cantrips have no limit on how often you can use it. With that in mind, have at least one offensive cantrip in case you run out of spell slots. Luckily, 5e.tools does allow you to look at all the spells available to your class as well. You don’t need to write down the exacts, just note their name on the sheet and you can refer to the information online. I still require looking up how spells work, even after playing for years, so don’t think poorly on yourself for not knowing everything.”
You notice the trio quickly get to work on the devices they were using before jotting down numbers of spell slots and names of cantrips and spells their character would know. You turn your attention towards Alex and copy his relaxed position.
“Seem interesting so far? I know this has been a lot of information to take in,” you ask.
“It was a lot, but it seems like it will be fun. You can never go wrong with fantasy I feel,” Alex replies.
“Well, that’s good at least. Once we get into actual gameplay, the fun will pick up. Interacting with a character and daring fights can get your blood pumping. Some people go to the extent of giving their character a voice other than their own and start physically embodying their character like hunching over. Now, none of this is expected out of anyone, and since you guys are playing yourselves, it wouldn’t make sense to give your character a different voice. If you continue to play DND after this campaign and think that would add more fun into your gameplay, then go for it,” you expound.
“We’ll have to see. From all the stories you’ve mentioned, I think I’ll enjoy it, but I do not know how far I’ll go to get into a character,” Alex responds.
The two of you sit in silence for a couple of moments more before Dakota, Chelsea, and Tanner finish writing their spells down.
Once all the writing is done, you speak up again, “That will be the last thing I will make you do with me today. We mentioned having connecting backstories as you all are continuing to be Project Fear in this game, so during some of your free time you can collaborate and write those details down. You can keep simple bullet points, write a paragraph, or some people go to the extent of writing many pages of backstory. As level one, I will say that backstory would be a bit limited when it comes to fighting big beasts. For example, if you were to go fight a dragon now, you all would be dead in one shot. Ghosts and ghouls are potential enemies in the DND world, and at level one, fighting them would also be deadly. That isn’t to say you couldn’t have seen them or talked to them but fighting them would be unlikely where you currently are at.”
The group smiles at you and nod their heads in acknowledgment.
Before you could ask them, Tanner asks, “So when should we meet next?”
“I was just about to ask that,” you chuckle before continuing, “Does Thursdays at 7pm generally work for you guys? I know things can happen last minute, but is this a time that is usually available?”
The crew think for a moment before all nodding their heads and saying some variation of the word “yes.”
“Alright, so 7pm on Thursday it is. See you then,” you confirm before letting them go.
You could vaguely hear them muttering to one another as they headed to their cars to leave. Seems that they can’t wait for next week to arrive.
In the meantime, you have session one to plan out for them.

“A black sheep adventure” was the phrase used by Hebridean sheep farmers, Jack and Morna Cuthbert, to describe their involvement in the excellent Disney Plus Star Wars TV show, Andor. But first let me back up a wee bit here. As a Scotsman, seeing Scotland in Andor (especially those beautiful wide drone shots capturing the Highland mountains) was not only thrilling and gave me a swell of pride, but in just over an hour I could be on set locations, so as I was researching the Aldhani scenes in episodes 4-6, I tumbled down a rabbit hole which led me to Jack and Morna’s website. They had a contact form, so I thought I’d take a chance and drop them a note saying I live 30 minutes from them and asked if it would be possible to take pictures of their sheep used in Andor to share on Fantha Tracks. Being the wonderful couple they are they agreed to my request, so I had the pleasure of not only taking pictures of their sheep, including Excalibur, but was also invited into their home for a coffee and a chat to learn more about their Star Wars story....and their sheep. Jack and Morna began their black sheep adventure with 6 Hebridean sheep in 2011. Twelve years later they have 600. Considering there were only 273 Hebridean sheep alive in 1973 (until the Rare Bread Survival Trust took charge of the breed) making them rarer than the giant panda, Sumatran tiger and rhinoceros, the Cuthbert’s numbers are impressive. Most impressive. Currently there are around 1500 registered Hebridean sheep. Jack is the Trustee of the Hebridean Sheep Society and conservation is very much at the forefront of his mind. As well as playing their part in restoring the breeds numbers, they also help the environment by working with Forestry Commission Scotland. Having 100 sheep in a 25 acre lowland bog eating silver birch saplings in turn helps keep the bog wet. So how did they get involved in Andor? They saw an advert by animal training company Birds and Animals looking for multi-horned sheep for a TV production. Obviously Star Wars was not named in the original ad, but they thought why not?, took a chance and applied. Eventually they were selected, and a black sheep adventure began. Their sheep were wanted by production because they look familiar, yet different. Tony Gilroy was happy he was the first to get sheep into Star Wars. Hebridean sheep are good natured so having that many males, or tups as they’re called in Scotland, together wouldn’t be an issue. As with many animals, when you get them together there’s an order of dominance, and 7 year old Excalibur is the Alpha male that keeps the others in line. Originally the production was due to begin filming in May 2020 but was delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Cuthbert’s had given the Andor production 17 tups to choose from. At first they wanted 6, then decided on 11. In preparation leading up to filming the sheep got used to walking on the same boards that were used on the bridge, that was built by crew, to cross the River Tilt. Familiarisation with something they weren’t used to walking on would be vital in getting them to and from their pen on set. Where the sheep live there isn’t a river, so even hearing the water never mind seeing it, was a totally new experience for them, but by training and building their confidence walking across the bridge to get treats they were able to enjoy their new surroundings. With new sights, new smells and new tastes, “they enjoyed their wee holiday.” So did Jack and Morna, even though they couldn’t even tell their 2 children, Orin and Struan, what they were really doing for the time they were away. One of them was always on set for the three weeks of filming, something the production insisted on. Some days they weren’t used, but they were always there just in case. Familiarisation with cast and crew was also vital for filming. Varada Sethu (Cinta Kaz) and Faye Marsay (Vel Sartha) were particularly affectionate with them. Varada would make a beeline for them when she arrived on set to greet them with head pats and tickles.
(Side-note: Varada became my new Andor favourite after hearing this; that’s exactly what I’d do) If you look at the set picture, compare it to the pictures of Excalibur I took and notice something looks different, you’re correct. Excalibur was given a head piece giving him an additional 2 horizontal horns. Around 10% of the 1500 Hebridean breed are multi-horned. The numerical variety of horns is all down to the buds splitting in the skull template. Genes control the split of the horn buds. The more horns the tups have the more brittle they are and easier they get knocked off when they’re young. Jack and Morna have only ever had one tup with 8 horns. Excalibur and his woolly tup friends join the list of elephant, rat, iguana, toad, raven, hamster, rabbit, llama, ferret, chicken, goat, owl and horse seen in Star Wars. The Hebridean sheep play a key role in helping “Clem” and his Aldhani rebel group blend in to the surroundings and hide in plain sight from the arrogant Empire. They’re only Highland farmers, right? We know that Dray milk will make you question your existence after a few days, but what does Hebridean hogget taste like? Jack told me it’s slightly gamey with caramelisation sweet notes to it. White sheep have fat that doesn’t render quite so well. Hebridean bread has a different make up of collateral and fat level accounting for the island life. They need a quick shot of energy for when times are hard and they need that extra energy. They carry more fat around their internal organs, and because they’re a smaller bread they’re slower to the table. A standard sheep is culled at 4 to 6 weeks but a Hebridean is 18 months. It’s tender like lamb, despite being older. They sell their produce to a variety of places, from local Scottish pubs to Michelin star restaurants like The Quality Chop House in London, where they’ve been invited to give evening dinner talks (and describe those events as black sheep adventures too). The couple clearly enjoy seizing opportunities to see where it takes them. They had no idea they were going to work on Star Wars but, “It’s a bucket list ticked. The sheep will still be in Star Wars long after we’re gone.” If you’d like to see Excalibur for yourself and cheer him on, you can do so by attending the upcoming Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, Edinburgh from Thursday 22nd June to Sunda 25th June 2023. It showcases the best of food, farming and rural life. Excalibur will be judged in the Hebridean tup class and is also eligible for the 4 horned trophy. Everyone here at Fantha Tracks wishes Excalibur the best of luck and hope he adds more rosettes to the Cuthbert’s wall. If you’d like to see what Jack and Morna have for sale you can do so by clicking here. Many thanks to Jack and Morna for inviting me into their home and sharing their black sheep adventure story with Fantha Tracks… May the Force be with ewe. https://www.facebook.com/fanthatracks/posts/pfbid034vXsUWPQXpNrXRZNG3AevY3RJ2zqVBxe1EvwPu1Ndg47BhF4tfPH1kJyyYsmCu6gl [amazon box="B0BP5NV3M6"]

Soo I know mcc is not as hyped up or popular as it was a few years ago, but I still find it great and cannot wait for it to come back. Therefore, for this hiatus, here are 3 winning povs I recommend to watch! I am pretty proud of this list bc I included all 3 seasons and 12 different players! It s a pretty self-indulgent list, buuut i think they are all great and all deserve a watch if you have not before
Season 1: MCC 9 Blue Bats (Hbomb, False Symetry, Rendog and Fruitberries). Out of all the teams of this list, this one is by far the most famous, and they absolutely deserve this fame! After all, its impact in mcyt is incredible, the only other teams that are as remembered are probably mcc 4 Purple Pandas (the sbi team) and mcc 17 Orange Ocelots, and it was the 1st time the hermits won mcc. The Blue Bats 9 were the ultimate underdogs, and each member of the team proved to everyone how freaking good they are in the coolest way posible. Also, the vibes were so, so good, and it was just a really epic event. It is been more than 2 years, and I still think those survival games are the best there has been in mcc history. Finally, I am pretty sure this team indirectly caused Hbomb being in vault hunters and freaking treebark, so good for em. And I could go on and on about this team, but there is a reason I am writing this in Ria´s blog lol, just scroll down!! You won´t regret it! In summary, obligatory watch and the definition of a legendary win. (Ren please come back, we all miss you. Especially False.)
Season 2: MCC 23 Orange Ocelots (Quig, Eret, Inthelittlewood and F1nnister). Look. I feel like crazy every time I say this team is incredible bc no one else seems to get it. But this pov is the definition of vibes. This team is made up of 4 random ccs who had almost no contact to each other before the event, it was the 1st time some of them even talked. And still they had the most wholesome, fun vibes ever. They were just so supportive of each other (Quig and Eret were really into getting Martyn his 1st win bc they watched him when they were kids, that was so cute), and it is so obvious they did not expect to win, it was such a close event with a lot of strong teams that in theory were better than orange. I think they were in 6th place until the 5th game or so. But still they did it by being absolute badasses and having some of the best communication I have ever seen in mcc (that parkour tag is just beautiful). Also they all really deserved that win, period. Both Quig and Finn seem to have left mcc very soon after this event, and Eret and Martyn have not teamed up again since, and this is literally my Roman Empire :(. Look people, just watch mcc 23, most povs from that event were a blast, apart from Orange I really recommend Red (the other team in dodgebolt, who did incredibly well and also deserved to win), Lime and Purple
Season 3: MCC 31 Red Rabbits (Jojosolos, OllieGamerz, CapitanGato and Shadoune). Okay, this one is kind of tricky to recomment bc for most of the event they talk in Spanish, BUT. I am Hispanic, and this mcc meant a lot. It was just so cool to see people who talked in my first language in an event I had loved for so long. As I have seen some confusion about this, I will clarify that Shadoune is not Hispanic, he s French, but he speaks Spanish very well and has been a part of that side of the mc community for long, so he s adopted i guess lol. But yeah, this team was amazing, I will never get tired of seeing Jojo dominate and prove the goddamn reddit wrong. She is just such a cool player. Her leadership skills are unmatched, like that team included two brand new players, and Shadoune had only played once. And they still won!!! The vibes were excellent. Ollie has become a player I always look forward to, he s just very chill and he was so proud of himself that mcc for knowing the "lore" (aka writing weird dunk in chat). I will never not laugh at Gato doing a 1v3 in dodgebolt and not realizing how big of a deal that is lmao. And Shadoune had to deal with a lot of technical issues during the event, but he was still great. Also, he has a very fun personality, I like seeing such a good and competitive player, basically a legend in the Hispanic circles of minecraft, being as enthusiastic as he is. During the irl mcc event he was basically jumping from happiness :)
Okay, long post, but I wanted to talk about some of my favourite teams (there are many other great ones!). I think sometimes we look back and only remember the drama and discourse, and it is true it has been so many events they might not seem as special anymore. A lot of iconic players have left as well. But we have had lots of incredible moments. A lot of new, great players have joined relatively recently and are so excited to show the community what they are capable of: Impulse, Owen, FireBreathMan, Bekyamon, DarkEyebrows, Wallibear... Like people, players who are now iconic participants such as Purpled, Scar and Jojo did not join until well into season 2! Show the newbies your love! The non-canon events have also been great (pride, scuffed my beloved, party, twitch rivals). I look forward to the future :)
Sorry for using your blog for my rant, it is just the local newspaper for me hehe. You are more than free to not awnser if you feel like it, I just wanted to write my thoughts somewhere lmao
Yayyy I really appreciate the effort it took to type all this out! MCC still has its fun bits despite everything :)) Thanks for the submission to the newspaper LMAO and yep great POVs! (Looking at the Blue Bats one with wide pleading eyes)

Momo: The idol feature story was given to us because we’re all active in our respective fields!
Momo: Let's work together to make it more exciting! (∩´∀`)∩
Takanashi Tsumugi:
Tumblr media
Takanashi Tsumugi: The theme of Momo-san’s issue was "tell your story with your back," right?
Takanashi Tsumugi: As for your back’s body make-up, I heard that the decision was made because of the wonderful backbone that you show to juniors as a senior!
Momo: Seems like it?! I was embarrassed when I heard from Okarin, too!
Momo: Does Momo-chan really talk with his back that much? (●´艸`)
Takanashi Tsumugi: Of course! I’ve learned so much from Re:vale-san…!
Takanashi Tsumugi: Obviously you give us advice and such, but you always care about our new songs and new jobs even though you are very busy, so it’s immensely encouraging for us.
Takanashi Tsumugi: The other day, when Mitsuki-san was the MC for a special program, he was delighted that Momo-san praised him!
Momo: That was really because Mitsuki’s MC power exploded! (*´∀`)b
Momo: He acted like a veteran, with his excellent banter and smooth turns during the talk.
Momo: It made me feel like I had to work hard as well!
Takanashi Tsumugi: I'm happy to hear you say that.
Mitsuki-san will be pleased to know that you respect him not only for his singing abilities, but also for his talk show stand-in prowess...!
Takanashi Tsumugi: We’ll continue to watch Momo-san's back and learn a lot from him!
Takanashi Tsumugi:
Tumblr media
Momo: I'll do my best to show my cool back to the juniors lolol
Momo:
Tumblr media
Momo: Oh yes, since we’re still on the topic of back muscles!
Momo: I've been putting a lot of effort into body make-up lately, so I plan on delivering a toned-up Momo-chan (`・ω・´)>
Takanashi Tsumugi: Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing that as well!
Momo: Maneko-chan, you work out a lot too, right?
Momo: You were very agile when you danced with Okarin and the others at the New Year's party!
Momo: You were super cool!
Takanashi Tsumugi:
Tumblr media
Takanashi Tsumugi: My job requires a lot of physical strength, so I try not to miss muscle training as much as possible.
Takanashi Tsumugi: But it’s difficult to train the back muscles and other parts of the body that you can't see, so it creates a bit of an imbalance…
Momo: It's true that it's hard to see whether your back training is working or not!
Momo: If you want, can I send you a video of the intensive back training I recommend?
Momo: Yuki and I do it during breaks and it's a lot of fun ~゚ヽ(*´∀`)ノ゚.:。+
Takanashi Tsumugi: wah...! Are you sure...!
If you two are doing this, doesn’t that make it hard?
Momo: There are different levels from easy to hard!
Momo: We do the easy ones! Not so much for training, but more for the trainer's shouts? so lolol
Takanashi Tsumugi: There’s a lot of shouting involved…!
Momo: "Here we go, just like that! haaaa! hup, ho!” Yuki imitates him with a determined look on his face, so I laugh and can't concentrate at all ゚・(ノ∀`)・゚・。
Momo: so I was training my back muscles, but at the same time my abdominal muscles were also being trained lololol
Takanashi Tsumugi: It has a double effect then, doesn't it? LOL! I would love to try that out!
Takanashi Tsumugi:
Tumblr media
Momo: If you keep listening to it, you'll get addicted to it, so give it a try lolol I'll send you the link to the video later~!

ep36 (1/2): we are so fucking back, baby
thank god this episode was really good. sweet and cute in part 1 and then really funny + spooky later on
Tumblr media
I do find it really funny that wwx arranged lwj's arms like he's in a coffin. man, but his sleeping pose is so strange
I wonder if there's something to be said that lwj looks like he's always in mourning and sleeps like he's dead but he's actually the force of life and light in the life of wwx. and wwx is even more strongly associated with death through his cultivation path and his own death, but he's got so much energy and life in him (when he's not like, super depressed or traumatized that is). the balance is neat
Tumblr media
yeah this is cute. lwj has changed in some ways since wwx has come back, in ways that I think confuse and put wwx on the defense in some cases. but overall there's a steady reliability there that I think plays a significant role in why he loves lwj - he's something familiar and comforting and dependable in a new and strange world
Tumblr media
aww their reunion!!
Tumblr media
love this scene! wwx never really thought he was above wen ning, but he didn't always show it so clearly. he's communicating so well to wn here - we're equals, I'm not above you, you can stand tall and not be ashamed of yourself
Tumblr media
ohhh that's why he wanted bichen
Tumblr media
his face is so funny and 2. man I guess that's the translation but I like bichen better
Tumblr media
another funny scene. wen ning noisily and clumsily running away right behind wwx and wwx stumbles over his words trying to explain himself
Tumblr media
how the FUCK did they get here. like there was no effort put into this at all lol wwx was just like 'hehe I got lost" HOW DID YOU GO FROM THE CITY CENTER TO A RANDOM FARMHOUSE
Tumblr media
man, wyb is BACK in this episode. idk why things were so weird and cold in previous episodes but he's got so much more expression in his face this time. even his dopey blank drunk-face is like deeply intent and focused. he is honestly very cute here
Tumblr media
LEGEND
Tumblr media
ohhh I love this. couple quality activities
Tumblr media
I don't think it's fair to call ss utter shit with a sword, so lwj really is just that good. goddamn.
Tumblr media
im like really enamored with this face? god he's so open and honest and vulnerable like this
Tumblr media
so cute I can't 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this makes me sooo mad because we SAW the brand on his chest we KNOW he got drunk and did that so why shouldn't he have gotten drunk off wwx's favorite wine?? huh??? at least, he did in the book iirc
side note, but as someone whose first exposure to the story was the drama, I put the pieces together pretty well myself. like, who else would it have been? it had to have been lwj himself
Tumblr media Tumblr media
back to chatting about rabbits. what a goofy smile. and look how much wwx is laughing, aww
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is a great scene for the confession itself, but I've always loved most xz's performance. those big wet eyes, and all that swallowing - he's so touched he really might start crying right there. and it's so important to wwx to know that someone trusted him, and believed in him, and wished they'd done something differently to help him. the last time someone publicly defended him he did cry. it's something I love a lot about wwx
Tumblr media
and I just like that smile so much. all that love in there. that affection. almost looking like nostalgia
I like the idea that wwx is someone who can remember who he was when he was young more easily with lwj - that innocence and energy and joy he used to have
Tumblr media
this is also really funny. I'm sure it's not nine. he's just announcing it is because he's going to sleep now, so it must be
Tumblr media
and the only time we see him with a nightmare postres. makes sense that he still gets them - BM and the war was only a few years ago
Tumblr media
aww his smile when he sees the kids is so cute
Tumblr media
THE FAKE MOUSTACHE I CAN'T
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some sick burns these kids are delivering

Bunniverse: Twenty Years of Nibbles
This Sunday (9-24-2023) is the 20th anniversary of the writing of the story which would be the glue that bound together several dozen stand alone stories into a cohesive universe, which would continue to grow for the next two decades. While the initial seeds were sown December 19th, 2001, and stories would be developed and written for almost two years, on a Wednesday evening, while chatting through the Yahoo! Groups board for the Haldir Lovers group, the idea manifested of Haldir having PTSD and getting through some of his anxiety with the help of a plush purple rabbit named Nibbles which was made for him by Elladan and Elrohir.
Tumblr media
Named "The First Homely House, or, Attack of the Purple Plot Bunny", it was readers who would begin to refer to this story and subsequent related tales happening in Elrond's Valinor residence where he lived with Celebrian, her parents and brothers, their spouses and children, later adding Erestor and Glorfindel when they reached the shores of Alqualonde, and the youngest of Arwen and Aragorn's daughters, a marchwarden named Elodien who chooses the path of an Elf instead of the race of Men not as the titles the stories were given, but as the 'Purple Bunnies', a name that would later stick as The Purple Plot Bunnies for the series of fifty fics set in the Fourth Age, from September 119 to June 121. The series is PG13, with a handful of 'half-steps' written at higher ratings for in-between stories between consenting adult characters.
While it was actively being posted, many sites and groups at the time listed any sort of slash (m/m or f/f pairings) as forbidden or considered to merit a mature rating even if the content was below a teen level. Therefore, there are two different versions of about 1/3 of the stories in the series -- in the versions posted at gen and het sites and groups, Glorfindel and Erestor were only referenced as having traveled to Valinor at the same time, did not kiss or hold hands, and no mentions were made of their wedding bands or marriage. In versions posted to slash sites, relationships between Elrond and Celebrian as well as Galadriel and Celeborn were downplayed, and the above content with Glorfindel and Erestor was included. Most of the het/gen variations no longer exist; the slash variations were edited to include some of the content from the het/gen versions and additional content between 2007 and 2008, when they were all printed in what is considered the merged v.2 of all of the tales.
It was around that time that the universe became known as Bunniverse; prior to this, it was listed as The Purple Plot Bunny Universe, or, PPB-AU for short. The name Bunniverse was suggested by Smaug, since PPB-AU required explanation for new readers. Bunniverse has its own layer of confusion, with some potential readers believing that the name implies characters are all rabbits in the universe. A series of drawings by Smaug on this theme were done, which really only lead to more confusion, but fellowship buns were too adorable for anyone to be mad about it.
Three companion 'bunny' series are also part of the universe of what now numbers over 400 stories -- the Orange Plot Bunnies (also referred to as Erestory, where Erestor became the character of focus), the Pale Pink Plot Bunnies (concentrating on Glorfindel and Erestor adopting a child in Valinor, and featuring Fingon and Caranthir in prominent roles), and the Baby Blue Plot Bunnies (also known as Fluff'n'Stuff, taking place in early Third Age Rivendell, heavily focused on Glorfindel, and containing some of the heaviest religious and faith-based themes in Bunniverse). Of the three offshoots, only the Blue Bunnies have been completed at this time.
If you managed to read through all of this, you might be interested in the party time weekend I'm hosting on the Bunniverse discord server. Come on over; I totally asked your parents and they said it's okay. Okay, actually, I'm not asking your parents, but you should come over anyhow. Come celebrate Nibbles' birthday with me. :-3

"Flowers in spider webs" [2]
Harada x Burado (my OC, you can learn more about her here)
Summary: Burado-chan is a shinigami, who was destined to take Sanosuke's life. Unfortunate thing is that she fell in love with him.
Also a little disclaimer - English is not my native language, so if you find any mistakes in the text feel free to share, I always look forward to improve my writing skills ✨
_____________
"How are you, Shinichi? " she didn't go to the Heaven very often, only when she was visiting an old friend.
For some inexplicable reason, Burado started visiting him. In Jigoku, she was bored, almost no demon normally perceived shigigami, such as she was treated with caution and prejudice. Suicides were not welcome here. Coming to the Garden of Eden, walking among the peach trees among the soothing, thought-provoking silence, she often wondered if she could also live here, help the local deities. A calm, full of silence life seemed to the girl something unattainable, even if she was no longer that scared beginner shinigami. In five years, she and Shigure have transported many souls to the next world, they have become much stronger.
"Don't worry about me, Burado-chan," he smiled radiantly as always, stroking the rabbit, peacefully snoring on his lap. They often chatted while sitting under the shade of a peach tree. After thinking for a couple of moments, the samurai looked into the sorrowful face of the girl. "You haven't seen him since, have you?"
"Oh… Who are you talking about?" the girl asked, even if she already knew the answer.
"Harada, my friend," the gentle wind ruffled his dark brown hair. "Sometimes I wonder what he has become over the years…"
"Yes, me too," she sighed heavily, as she always did at the mention of an old acquaintance.
Shinichi had heard that such strong feelings were alien to youkai, but looking at how the girl was overcome by an irresistible longing for something, he began to doubt. She saw Sano through his eyes and sometimes spoke of him as an old friend, albeit not without a touch of bitterness. According to Shigure, he thinks that the girl is to blame for his death.
"If fate brings you together again, say hello for me, okay?" he patted her on the shoulder, helping to cheer her up a little and distracting her from sad thoughts.
_______________________
February 1866, Kyoto
By the end of winter in the mortal world, she and Shigure managed to collect five hundred souls. The situation in Kyoto became increasingly turbulent, a serious political conflict was brewing, and Burado began to notice other reapers of death scurrying among people unnoticed, as if a dark omen of coming changes. During these ten years that she and Tokabo Shigure traveled around Japan, the girl managed to get used to the customs of the East, which she previously considered alien and barbaric. Even though she came to this country as a little girl, it was difficult for Katherine Blood to come to terms with other people's mores, her father raised her as an English lady and a Corsican donna. Now his lessons seemed so far away, forgotten. Having died in a foreign country, she became a part of it, another stone in the huge wall of Jigoku. Mother would never have believed it if she had found out what her daughter was doing.
"Do you feel that sour smell?" Shigure grumbled in a barely audible voice as they strolled through the large market square in search of a new target. The person on their list was an ordinary peasant who would be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a few days, the father of five children and the only able-bodied person in the family will be hacked to death by drunken ronin, who mistakenly decide that he is spying on Shinsengumi. "Land demons are hanging around here"
She had already heard from Mr. Hozuki about land demons. They were incredibly strong, hardy and, unlike their afterlife representatives, never served in Jigoku. They didn't care what the other youkai were involved in, moreover, they preferred not to notice them. Shigure always spoke of these demons with such contempt. Once he belonged to one of these demons, he cursed his beloved umbrella and doomed him to an immortal existence. Angry at the whole world, Toukabo Shigure devoured the vital energy of his new owners, caused them all sorts of trouble and spoiled karma in every possible way. For this, Mr. Hozuki almost burned youkai on a brazier with hot coals, taking from him the word to atone for all his sins. Thanks to Shigure's efforts, new souls arrived in Jigoku ahead of time, and Hozuki hated overtime work.
"What are you talking about?" exhaling a translucent cloud of steam, Burado turned around at the strange ominous aura. A tall, long-haired man in flashy clothes, with a tattoo on his entire arm, he seemed to deliberately attract attention with his impudent appearance, looking at the crowd around him with arrogant contempt. Without noticing her, he passed by.
"Arrogant bastards," Shigure swore.
The demon seemed to have sharp hearing. As soon as youkai finished his sentence, he suddenly stopped. The bare muscular back tensed.
"Are you talking to me, girl?" he turned around slowly, breaking into a cold smile that looked more like a predator's grin. "You don't want to live at all, huh?"
A dark, sinewy palm rested on the belt, on which hung a holster with a revolver. Burado had seen similar weapons before, her father once had such a revolver.
"Our forces are almost equal," over the years spent in wandering, with each new collected soul, she and Shigure became stronger. If alone she could lose to a more experienced, battle-hardened demon, then together with a partner with the support of his youkai power, the demon was not such a problem. Burado felt like she was getting tougher and stronger every day, and at the end of last year she received a fifth-rank mask from Hozuki. Lifting her chin, she boldly responded to the cold, arrogant gaze of the demon. There was barely contained anger in the violet eyes. "If you want, we can somehow measure them, but right now I have no desire to participate in a quarrel. Forgive my friend, sometimes he can be short-tempered"
Despite the indignation of Shigure, who was already itching to fight with the demon, Burado took a step back and bowed low. The man watched her with a tenacious gaze.
"Who are you, girl?" crossing his arms over his chest, the demon threw. Despite the fact that he never accepted her apology, he looked less threatening now. By the scarlet mask with oni's face and the youkai companion, he probably already guessed who he was talking to.
"It is indecent for a girl to introduce herself first" - she chuckled, ignoring the grinding teeth of Sigure, who did not like this conversation at all. He expected them to kick this arrogant upstart's ass instead of chatting amiably with him.
"Hey, hey, are you making eyes at him?!" a pale scarlet glow began to emanate from the oiled scarlet paper of the umbrella.
"Shut up," Burado ordered, grabbing the umbrella so that she covered the ugly gaping mouth with her palm. Of course, she didn't make any eyes.
"I'm Shiranui Kyou".
"And I… " she hesitated, remembering how almost everyone in Jigoku could hardly pronounce her name. "I'm Burado"
The nickname given by Harada Sanosuke fell off her lips by itself. Involuntarily, something pricked in her chest at the memories of the spearman.
"Burado and that's it?"
"I have no family or clan. I serve Emma-sama"
Shiranui looked her over meticulously from head to toe and grinned at something. After parting with Harada and receiving the fifth rank of shinigami, she changed a lot in appearance. Now it was hard to confuse Burado with a girl who accidentally ran away from the festival. The simple black yukata was replaced with spacious clothes of the shugenja, extremely comfortable for traveling in the harsh northern climate. And the wooden mask didn't look so pathetic now, the new one was given out by Mr. Hozuki himself. Its lacquered, scarlet surface glistened in the sun, and empty demonic eyes were now devouring Shiranui Kyou. Concentrating, the girl could even see through the slits of the mask, even when it is not on top of her head, but is somewhere very far away. It was very convenient to monitor her targets.
"That's what I thought, you're one of those snotty bureaucrats who are always getting in the way, collecting the souls of mortals… There are a lot of you in the city today!"
There was some commotion in the crowd of people that filled the market. Looking around from the height of his height, Shiranui shook his blue-black hair pulled into a ponytail and cursed softly.
"We'll chat later, dead girl," he called over his shoulder, already disappearing among the excited people.
Katherine didn't even have time to say anything, as the tall figure melted into the air, taking advantage of the commotion. After staring at the empty place where Shiranui had been standing for a couple of moments, the girl turned around at the screams of people. There were some strange whispers, people were talking quietly now and then and exchanging frightened glances. An old man cursed loudly and spat contemptuously at his feet. For a while, the girl couldn't figure out what was going on until she noticed a column of Ronin in pale blue haori. They were all young men with stern, focused faces. The crowd devoured them with hostile glances.
"The Mibu Wolves are coming!" she heard a tense whisper next to her. Two old women selling snacks were talking. "Ugh, damn Shinsengumi!"
"Hush, Mita," her friend said, looking around in fright to make sure that no one had heard them. "Keep quiet if you don't want any problems"
Two squads of Shinsengumi, swordsmen and spearmen, who looked like a motley collection of young samurai in pale blue haori, crossed the market square. Burado, hidden in the crowd, devoured the backs of their heads with her eyes. There were a lot of rumors about Shinsengumi in Kyoto, mostly not the most pleasant. They were called cruel murderers and robbers, but she and Shigure had not yet had to come for the victims of the Shinsengumi. From the outside, especially looking at the captains walking on the right side of the rest of the column, the warriors looked more like bohemian thugs from adventure novels, young, flashily dressed. Despite the hostile stares of the townspeople, they managed to exchange restrained smiles, discussing something in a low voice. They didn't even care about the people around them.
"Shigure, do you feel it?" the shinigami's instinct, developed over many years of wandering and collecting souls, suggested that there was someone in the ranks of the walking warriors whose soul they would have to take away. There was a familiar, weak energy emanating from this man, which indicated that this was going to happen in a couple of years.
The fact that one of these people was going to die didn't surprise her at all. The situation in the country was gradually heating up, besides, samurai are always on the verge of death.
"Pf, big deal, you smelled someone's soul! We still have two more years to wait," youkai snorted, still sulking at her because of the conversation with Shiranui. However, despite his touchiness, he did not know how to take offense for a long time, especially if you offer him expensive sweets.
Burado pursed her lips, peering into the faces of the warriors, trying to figure out which of them was her target. Or he will be her target in a few years. Maybe a stooped skinny kid with a naginata? Or a stern swordsman with a samurai bun, looking at the townspeople with hostility? Or is it a tall, red-haired unit captain with a spear lying across his shoulders?
At some point, the tall captain looked back at her, as if feeling the eyes on him. His yellow eyes swept the crowd with a quick glance, as if searching for the one who was staring so intently. The man frowned slightly and returned to the interrupted quiet conversation.
Tumblr media
The look of the wolf's yellow eyes seemed to burn her. Bouncing away from the shock further into the crowd, she shook her curly hair in disbelief. Burado barely recognized him. If not for the warm, bright red aura of the color of the setting sun, she would never have believed that this tall, muscular man with disheveled dark red hair was the same lively, laughing young man whom she met as if in a past life and for whom her heart ached.
"This is…" she pressed her cold palms to her cheeks, feeling them begin to burn. "Harada Sanosuke!"
"That mortal again! Are your lifelines stuck together!?" Shigure growled irritably.
Burado did not hear his words. Panting, she gasped for air and tried to recover. She no longer hoped that she would meet this man ever in her life, she was already used to nursing a wound on a broken heart.
Without thinking for almost a second, the girl moved after the column of soldiers, bypassing the people coming towards her. Harada's shaggy dark-brown tail loomed somewhere ahead, his crown towering high above the rest. The girl didn't know why she was following him, it was like picking up a badly healed wound. He has become so... big, tall, it seems, he has grown into a real warrior. Before going further, she wanted to succumb to a selfish desire to take a closer look at him.
"Girl, where did you run off to?!" Toukabo Shigure was indignant, but his words had no effect on her.
Her heart was beating like a wounded bird in her chest. At one point, she managed to sneak up so close that she saw his muscular arms, tanned from frequent exposure to the sun, every wreath and muscle on them, the folds on the pale blue sleeve of haori. Holding her breath, Burado watched him pass by, just an arm's length away. To him, she was a vague shadow, another face from the crowd.
"Who are you?"
Before she could react, the cold blade of the kunai pressed against her back.
