Tell me about your newsies vampire au I wanna know your thoughts

It’s very difficult to actually write because I have all these ideas for, like, horror and thriller and whatnot, but then I sit down to write and it’s just. A coffee shop au.

David works at a bookstore/café near the college campus, which is where he meets Jack, Spot, and some of their friends for the first time. I think Jack starts crushing right away and David has no clue for a long time.

I really love David and Spot friendship, and I also love when Spot and/or David just purposefully messes with Jack, so the perfect setup for everything was Spot just kinda going “haha Jack has a crush on this random guy. He’s gonna be my new bestie now.” So David is friends with Spot way before he’s friends with Jack.

It’s not like Jack is forever pining. It’s a mild crush that he kinda gets over when he and David actually become friends, and then it returns to kick his ass out of nowhere. The main story is from David’s POV, so the audience doesn’t see much of that, but I’ll probably write some one-shots about it from Jack’s POV.

The dynamic of all the guys at Medda’s house is so much fun, I love it a lot. We have her three boys (Spot, Jack, and Crutchie), and then Racetrack, Albert, Finch, and Swifty are pretty much always around, and then David starts hanging out there a lot, so naturally Les is always around, too. It is not that big of a house and it’s this massive group of guys with the youngest being a middle schooler and the oldest being a college junior. It’s nonsense, it’s chaos, it’s fun and terrifying always. Medda is so happy when the girls start showing up, even if they add extra drama, just because she needs a break from the boys.

The fact that everyone knows everyone for different reasons is so funny. It’s a giant version of the Spider-Man pointing meme. Like, Racetrack knows Sarah, and Sarah knows Smalls, and Smalls knows Medda, and Medda knows Denton, and Denton knows David, and David knows Spot, and Katherine knows Spot but he doesn’t know her— it goes on, and on, and on. It’s a trainwreck. Shoutout to Sniper, who no one knows. Uncomplicated Queen.

Crutchie is such a chaotic guy. I actually like to write him as older than Jack a lot of the time but there is definitely a certain chaotic charm to the sixteen year old horror youtuber finding out that both of his brothers are vampires and immediately moving on, not giving a shit, he’s behind on his editing schedule and does not have time for this, okay. David relates a lot to Crutchie, because the two of them literally could not care less about the existence of vampires. Jack is doing his little sad meow meow “I’m an awful monster I’m not human” routine and both of them are like. Eating cereal.

OKAY i'm normal now let's talk about this

okay. okay. i think most of us here know by now i am a DEGENERATE for davey spending most of his life trying so hard to be capital-N Normal only to reach a breaking point where he just says 'fuck it' and makes his identity everyone elses problem instead. and i especially love the idea of jack being a support in that; i really really really reject the idea that jack is the person who makes davey brave. davey's always had it in him to be brave and go against injustice, he's just used to keeping it hidden down inside him because he's been conditioned not to rock the boat. he's the eldest son, his dad's injured, he needs to work hard and do well in school and keep les on the right path and provide for his family. he's used to having to hide himself for the good of everyone else. but while i don't think jack is what makes him brave, i do think jack bolsters his braveness, and i think davey does the same for him. davey doesn't NEED jack to support him, but he wants him to, and that's the key thing. i think he'd definitely be more nervous to do something like this without jack there but would still do it, y'know? he knows it's what he wants and he knows it's not wrong. but with jack there i think the process of him going from 'scared but committed to this' to 'oh this is okay actually' to 'fuck yeah i look GOOD' would be a lot quicker with jack there to cheer him on.

i really love the idea of davey being supported in being Different. uksies really showed us how eager davey is to be weird and how easy it is for him to be comfortable doing that as long as he just has a supportive family around. i can really see the newsies all hyping him up for Baby's First GNC Fit, especially jack of course. jack, especially uksies jack, is such a gentle person with his loved ones and as much as i love seeing him being fiercely protective over the people he loves (hitting the delanceys to get them away from crutchie, protecting les during the strike fight) i also really like seeing those more tender 'something to believe in' type moments of him just being so hopelessly gone over the people he loves and doing his damnedest to make sure they get everything they want and deserve.

that being said. god it's so fucking funny to image jack trying so hard to be a Good Respectful Supportive Boyfriend while also going absolutely bonkers crazy over davey in a skirt. he is looking... respectfully. so respectfully. davey keeps reminding him that he doesn't need to be respectful as he is literally his boyfriend and is allowed to ogle him every now and again but no no, this is a big deal for davey and jack is taking it SERIOUSLY (even though he really doesn't have to). he can talk about how hot his boyfriend is later. and he will. at length. there may or may not be a slideshow involved. one of those slides might just be a big titlecard that reads 'LEGS'. we will never know.

also - and this is straight up just stolen from convos i've had with @jasperscringepit about the punk au - jack doing davey's eyeliner for him? perhaps? if you feel it fits of course.

punk jack? how would it affect the story of newsies if at all? do you have headcanons about him? ideas?

im still in the process of refining his playlist, but jack is a folk punker through and through to me. i love folk punk to bits and always return to it despite listening to a little bit of everything punk, so im biased, but it makes sense to me. i mean, it's pretty country sounding due to having similar instruments and taking cues from country, blue grass, folk, etc -- we can keep the cowboy vibes that way (very important)

plus the subgenre originated from folk singers who were heavily enmeshed in organizing against fascism and war and for worker rights (one singer, phil ochs, concerned the fbi so much they had a 500 page file on him). folk punk today has carried forward a lot of these same themes, of leftism and a struggle to make a living, of wanting to get the hell out of where you are in search for something, somewhere better. i know that this kinda sounds like a description of punk as a whole, but these themes feel especially prevalent in folk punk. additionally, it's pretty tongue in cheek and usually sounds upbeat, but there's a kind of sadness, anger, and hopelessness that permeates its lyricism

and all of this is fitting for jack, as the first to call for a strike and a possessor of a rebellious streak a mile wide. who wants to leave for santa fe so he can start anew, and has a happy go lucky, bullheadedly optimistic exterior, but is deeply cynical at his core -- thinking about the lyrics to santa fe, "we was beat when we was born," and the 91 script in which jack says, "last year [roosevelt] was a hero. this year, he's a politician." he may seem like an idealist, but he certainly holds no illusions about how the world operates.

as for politics, i can't see him getting too into the weeds of theory, just because he's someone who prioritizes action above all

that being said, i can easily see jack being motivated by anarchist ideals of direct action and anti-authoritarianism (well, more specifically, anarchism is anti hierarchy of any form, but jack's status as strike leader complicates things for me). after all, in the movie, he doesn’t campaign directly to roosevelt or some other authority figure to deal with pulitzer for him, he just… goes and does it himself, and the tactics he uses are pretty real as hell -- forming hard picket lines at the circulation center, destroying newspapers because they’re the property of the world, going to break crutchy out of the refuge, etc. jack even sings, “even though we ain’t got hats or badges / we’re a union just by saying so,” which seems to point towards a general disinterest in going through official channels

if we’re lifting the beats of the backstory provided in canon and placing it onto a modern au, i think he’d be most concerned with mutual aid, particularly food, and prison/police abolition. so for praxis, there's a whole lot of stuff he could do. make connections with unhoused people and give them the food out of his fridge. distribute free meals and/or groceries to people (to be clear, not a soup kitchen or another charity service, food not bombs and punks with lunch are by far the most common mutual aid orgs i see). writing prisoners and organizing to get them books. doing jail support, as in setting up in front of jail and waiting for people to get released so you can offer them comfort, food, clothes, and/or a ride home

and jack's definitely not against actions that are either dubiously legal or outright illegal. so yk, stuff like blockading an intersection with your own body, a car, or stuff that's laying around like rocks or traffic cones. graffiti. hell, even providing free food to the public without a permit isn't really allowed and can get you harassed/fined/written up by cops or other officials

i can't really see him with the stereotypical 'Punk Look' with the studs and spikes and leather jacket n all. imo he'd be pretty lowkey overall, most of the patches he has are pretty utilitarian in that they're usually placed to cover up a stain or tear. i dont think he'd modify his appearance much in general, at most he'd get his ears pierced, and even that was scary enough for him. he went with david for emotional support and squeezed david's hand so hard it went numb </3

Accidental javid from last night!

I was SO DRAINED after the party yesterday but I managed to draw something that I’m happy with. This genuinely wasn’t supposed to be javid, but the guy on the left just became Davey by accident so naturally I had to draw him a Jack. This also accidentally ended up joining the punk au, so I imagine that this would be either when they first meet or near the very beginning of their friendship. Davey has just started wearing jewellery and a belt chain,,, oh how that would change.

if you had to assign the newsies instruments for a band [kinda rock? grunge? yknow the ones teena make on a whim for like sometin to do on the week ends] what would they be?

I have that David does the lights cuz he gets stage-fright and so prefers to be back stage and Kelly plays the guitar cuz I like the idea of him getting caught in the wire and being like "dave the speak aint workng" "i am PLANNING YOUR MURDER!"

purely for selfish reasons i want davey to be a drummer but thats just bc i think it would be Cool !! bc like. it's a big role but it's underappreciated and doesn't have a lot of attention associated with it unless explicitly pointed out (in most cases), and if you think of that in a parallel with the strike: davey is the background man, the idea guy, the "brains" to jack's "blowhard," but he has those moments where he's the main focus- Seize The Day, The Rally, etc.- and those could be translated into like. those fun lil drum solos that some bands have and also most drummers are pretty badass and i am an advocate for badass davey rights

however i love davey being the lighting dude or the manager bc like? yeah. yeah i can also see that.

and jack,, GOD jack,, front vocals and guitar for sure. if davey isn't drums, then it's albert; if davey IS drums, then albert is bass guitar. i feel like race would be another guitarist- the rhythm guitar to jack's lead- and crutchie would be primarily keyboard but also a backup bassist if need be !! it would be so sick to see all of them rocking out omg,, just a grungey, grimy group of kids writing shitty songs and playing shitty music in a shitty town and having so much FUN doing it ??? peak newsies au right here !! i love it

- BABES YOU JUST- yes yes yes 100% correct. i’ve kinda vaguely mentioned it through his like,,,, physical description, but y e a h he’s vaguely punk now. it used to be a lot more scene/emo based, when he was in middle/high school, but it’s a little more laidback now.

- he still listens to his music too loud and wears mostly dark clothes, but it’s less band shirts and chains and ripped jeans and more tattoos and piercing and general jewelry. that video they did of looking at old pictures was a TIME, cause he doesn’t r e g r e t looking like that, he just regrets some of the weird choices he made (like that time he dyed his hair blue,,,,,, yeah it didn’t look right)

- he took ballet and tap until he was,,,, 11 or 12? then he dropped tap and picked up contemporary, and then when he was 15 he started doing jazz. he sorta stopped dancing when he was 17 cause of highschool and graduation things, but he picked it back up again when he was like,,, 19 or 20?? he couldn’t stay away very long, he grew up in it and loves it

- depends on race’s mood if it’s just the ends of his hair or his whole head, but albert finds it adorable either way. it’s not uncommon for race to have a new hair color every other week (it’s one of the perks of being naturally blonde) and if you catch him at the right time you can get albert to rant about how cute race is on stream (pretty much just not mid-gameplay or when he’s doing dares on drinking streams. he loves to talk about his boy)

- OK WAIT so for the longest time the only color albert had ever died his hair was black (this was peak emo high school albert and we appreciate him) and when it came to this he was just like “baby my hair is ALREADY red, what’s hair dye gonna do???” but it makes the color so much brighter and it’s like,,,,, genuinely FLAMING RED instead of like,,, natural hair color red, yk the vibe. and he just- he kinda loves it???? it makes him feel cool and like people actually have a reason to stare now (WE LOVE THE CONFIDENCE HONEY IM SO PROUD OF YOU)

- the way that their fans,,, a r e is really hard to explain all in one go tbh. think of it as a best friend you have that ‘hate like a sibling’ relationship with, but ALSO as like,,,, all the people in love with harry styles’ energy. like they make fun of the boys and tease them and meme the hell out of them but their also MASSIVE simps and are constantly making sure the boys know that’s they’re loved and supported and know just how much they’ve done for their fans. it’s pretty much the same thing the other way, the boys will tease and poke and prod their fans because they know they can, but they always make sure their fans know they love and appreciate them and that they’re not alone.
