— some Safe Haven Newtmas headcanons 🫂

Thomas would often feel the need to ask Newt how he's feeling because of his leg pain that somehow only grew worse after being so close to the past Gone before receiving the cure;

Every time that happened, Newt would say it's fine, even if it wasn't. He knew if he told Thomas the truth, the brunet wouldn't let him help the community and work on their little farm for the rest of the day (it's his favorite activity, and also makes him feel useful).

Now that they actually had time to sit, talk and know each other better, Newt would spend hours telling Thomas his Glade stories from the time the brunet hadn't arrived yet;

Thomas would listen to it with a smile on his face, relieved that now everything was over and Newt could rest and remember about the days of the Glade by the good bits.

Somehow they found an old record player and vinyls from before the Sun Flares in Safe Haven, and they sat together in silence just listening to songs for the first time.

During bonfires, Newt would stay up late chatting with their friends. Thomas would also stick around but, after feeling exhausted, would just sleep with his head on Newt's lap.

Stolen glances;

Hugs that lasted way longer than usual;

Acts of service and helping each other with their tasks once they were done with their own.

Newt started to question their relatioship after a while, especially when he would find Thomas helping or playing with the kids of the community and he noticed his heart would flutter at the view for some reason;

Thomas also started to look at Newt differently, mostly because everytime he would sleep on Newt's lap during bonfires, the blond woke him up with a sweet, low voice, whispering right next to his ear so they could get up and go to bed and his heart would stop.

Still, none of them would bring it up, afraid the other didn’t feel the same and they would only destroy their friendship.

But they didn't need to, of course, because Minho was the first one to bring up the fact they had feelings for one another the second he noticed how oblivious the two were.

Newt headcanons for Newt day!

Canon-verse:

Newt will step up to the plate, take on a leadership role when the situation calls for it, but honestly dreads it. He hates feeling that kind of pressure, those expectations placed on him. He feels inadequate and like he falls short where others (Thomas and Alby) have succeeded. He prefers his role as second-in-command. It gives him a platform for his voice to be heard, and be taken seriously, and he can still assist where needed, provide advice to the others and keep them in check. (Honestly, as far as I'm concerned this is just canon.)

Newt is a (power)bottom.

AU:

Newt, to everyone's shock and disbelief, is more of a coffee drinker than tea. He enjoys the occasional cup of tea, of course, but simply drinks coffee out of habit. He'll usually just take it with cream, but definitely enjoys adding Irish cream or peppermint syrup on occasion. 

Newt's favourite colour/s are blue and purple. He also likes deep reds.

His favourite season is fall. The colours of the trees changing and the smell of fallen leaves, as well as the scorching heat of summer finally dying off and the approach of Halloween and the other holidays are all reasons for this. 

Newt often wears turtlenecks and jumpers - partly because they're simply comfortable and versatile, but also to hide his scars. He hates it when people stare as if he won't notice, his brokenness physically displayed for everyone to see.

Newt plays the violin.

Newt always enjoyed running at night, before he broke his leg. It felt like he could breathe easier, run faster in the cool night air.

Now, he's more of a swimmer. It's therapeutic for his leg, and he enjoys being in the water.

Newt pierced his ears himself when he was 13.

If you were to ask any of them, his friends would compare Newt to a cat, personality-wise. However, he's both a cat and dog person.

Newt prefers wine over beer, mostly. With some exceptions, beer, in his opinion, tastes like piss.

Newt enjoys reading, listening to music, and drawing. He dabbles in writing too, on occasion. It gives him purpose to create something and put it out into the world, makes him feel like he's contributing in some way.

When he was younger, Newt wanted to be a veterinarian. However, he didn't end up pursuing it because he realized he wouldn't be able to cope when he lost patients. Yet, he still helps in other ways. He likes to volunteer at the local animal shelter, and works at the doggy daycare.

Newt enjoys surrealist horror and mystery, and has seen David Lynch's complete filmography. 

His favourite shows are Twin Peaks, Hannibal, and The Following. 

Newt often has candles or incense burning in his room. It helps him to de-stress and creates a calm, relaxing environment. 

Newt's history hyperfixation was Ancient Egypt.

Newt loves the smell of petrichor, and particularly enjoys cold, dewy mornings after it rains.

Newt is a Cancer + Virgo moon.

Newt drives a 1956 VW Beetle (black.)

Newtmas headcanons pt2!

Newt and Thomas both read and they just sit in bed together reading all the time, ever so often gasping and going "you'll never guess what just happened-"

Newt is a chronic clothes THIEF. he doesn't buy baggy clothes because he will just go and steal Thomas's stuff 😭 "its not your shirt, its OUR shirt. big difference." "I BOUGHT IT?!" "AND I PICKED IT FOR YOU!" "YEAH I SEE WHY NOW"

Thomas would see little trinkets or flowers and just give it to Newt with little to no context except maybe "for you!" "i found this" Newt has kept every single one. he presses the flowers and keeps them in a book, the trinkets are in a box.

Newt got told by a doctor he should be using a cane, Newt refused but made the fatal mistake of complaining to Thomas about it.. Newt now has a cane decorated with stickers.

before Newt got the flare he had a weaker immune system then the other guys (aka they have really strong immune systems and his was just normal so everyone thought his was weak) but after he got the flare and got cured it ACTUALLY got weak, like a cold for someone else will have him in bed for days vomiting :( Thomas however almost never gets sick.. so he takes care of sick Newt OFTEN

Newt loves taking care of plants, Thomas cannot keep them alive.

Thomas is wearing shorts in the freezing cold, Newt is in multiple layers the moment the temperate gets even slightly cold

Newt is a flower crown/bracelet WARRIOR. Anytime Thomas comes home with flowers he found if he has enough Newt makes them into bracelets for Thomas to wear around (sometimes he makes crowns but he usually makes bracelets because it’s more practical for Thomas)

Thomas won’t take the bracelets off unless he’s showering/sleeping (so they don’t break) and will wear them till they have withered off

Thomas BEGGED Newt to teach him how to plait hair, once he got it down he plaits Newts hair for him

Thomas sometimes has a hard time focusing, and will sometimes not look at people while they are talking (not in a rude way!!) and Newt will just tap him on the shoulder if it’s someone else but if Thomas is “ignoring” HIM.. yk that move he did to frypan when he was looking at Teresa? Yeah. That gets Thomas’s attention alright 😭 example:

Newt: yeah so then-

Thomas: *staring off into the distance, fiddling with his hands deep in thought*

Newt: *rolls his eyes and grabs Thomas’s face and makes him look at him* y’know you’re s’pose to look at people when they talk to ya Tommy

Thomas: *red in the face* uhm- yeah you’re right- sorry what did you say hun?

(Newt knows this gets Thomas flustered btw. Uses it to his upmost advantage)

When Newt got the cure (I’m insane) he still suffered from the rare burst of anger/paranoia and on very very bad days hallucinations, since he was past the gone when he got the cure. No where near as bad to when he had the flare but still bad none the less, Thomas reassures him constantly and helps him calm down.

Being sick is a massiveee trigger for Newt. Fever, flu, vomiting you name it he’s on edge. Sometimes he gets in his own head and second guesses if he’s really cured but once again Thomas saves the day and is always there for him when he’s sick, staying home more to make sure he’s ok. (Writing a small fic about this btw!!!)

Newt is a back rub fanatic. Loves them. Receiving end or giving he does NOT care!! Thomas figured this out and whenever Newt is upset Thomas rubs his back

Fav kiss placements (giving and receiving):

Newt: gives cheek and neck kisses, loves receiving normal, forehead/hair kisses & neck kisses

Thomas: gives normal, just all over Newts face & neck kisses, loves receiving neck kisses and cheek kisses

More on neck kisses specifically there is a reason beside lust!! Its pulse points, reminds them that this is infact real and the other is ok :)

When they hold hands they sometimes check each others pulses out of habit, if in a uncomfortable scenario one will check the others and if it’s higher they gesture with a head nod if the other wants to leave

They both underestimate their own injuries, the other freaks out when the other is slightly sick/injured because in the scorch tiny cuts or the flu were very dangerous. Not much medicine or anything. Even in the safe haven, it’s a habit they won’t get rid of convinced it keeps them safe. They had a rule in the scorch that they had to tell the other if they were injuried since they own they themselves won’t see it as a big deal. Example:

*in the safe haven*

Thomas: hey Newt I got this cut on my hand today *shows palm, slight cut still bleeding*

Newt: *eyes widen in shock, grabbing Thomas’s hand careful not to touch the wound dragging him away*

Brenda: where are you going?!

Newt: to bandage it!! *tugs Thomas’s faster*

They do the whole deal. Cleaning, bandaging double checking etc :( poor boys

Newt tops, Thomas bottoms. No further questions!!

They are NOT picky eaters. At all. Plates fully clean, they do have favourites though

Newt: he loves sweet foods but also loves spicy food, adores pineapple with his whole heart

Thomas: loves salty food, not the biggest fan of spice. Loves carrots and apples though (the carrot one is canon I think)

Going on about food, they share food without question. Apple? Cut in half. Got a snack? Got extra for the other. The other still has food on their plate (very rare) the other will finish it off.

In the wicked facility whenever Thomas ever saw Newt besides sneaking out (rare af) sometimes they would purposely bump into each other just for an excuse to say hi, very very quickly whispering anything important before being ushered away

Sometimes, the others wouldn’t be there when Thomas snuck around so there were a handful of times it was just Thomas and Newt. Newt remembers this and told Thomas, Thomas however doesn’t and is very sad about it. :(

They have perfected lip reading to a tee. Having full on silent convos while everyone else is just like “really?! AGAIN?” Example:

*Newt and Thomas silently talking, gesturing a fuckton with there faces*

Minho: *whispers to Brenda* I’m slowly figuring out that lil shucking language they got going on

Brenda: *whispers back* how?!

They started learning in the scorch, since they rarely got a moment alone they would silently talk strategy. Slowly but surely it turned into silent flirting in the safe haven so Newt will just mouth something and and Thomas will go OUTLOUD “NEWT. NOT HERE!!” “Tommy they don’t know what I’m saying remember??” “… oh yeah”

Before they got together they got into heated arguments and even got slightly physical, all jokes of course but they would shove eachother around and grabbing each others shirts to “emphasise their point” (GAYYYY 🫵🫵🫵🫵)

Another long yap session, expect more. Also new lil fic on working on but do not threat!! I bet on losing dogs chapter 4 IS COMING OUT SOON. And I may write a short lil spin off of Thomas’s worst flare moments in his pov if yall would enjoy that. And soon one of my moots requested a Jeff x reader fic I usually don’t write those but that will be out soon too!!

Same way JK Rowling only claimed Dumbledore was gay years afterword for inclusion’s sake; without actually putting in the work to make the character real representation. Don’t get me wrong, the subtext is all there and I completely headcannon Newt as gay. But attacking people who hc him as straight or bi or write f!self inserts with him is not necessary. yes, straight washing queer characters is bad!! but it isn’t straight washing when the character was not confirmed queer to begin with. -

Yeah I see this as a good thing to note. One time as I was searching about TMR, I didn't know he was gay until I found Maze Cutter. So thank you for speaking about this.

I haven't finished Death Cure book yet. But yeah I loved the third movie, it's second place for the Maze Runner trilogy for me.

Thomas and Newt used to play fight/roughhouse a lot as kids and Thomas always used to purposely nerf himself to let Newt win.

Codependent MF's! Newt sleeps with his head on Thomas' chest to feel his heartbeat or a hand on his pulse-point in the wrist.

Thomas uses pet names far more often than Newt does the most Newt uses is "Tommy" or maybe "love"

Newt likes to get carried around because of his bad leg.

Thomas info-dumps on Newt a lot about whatever interests him and Newt just listens because he finds it sweet listening to him ramble.

Newt would like to do makeup but I also feel like he'd like to practice on Thomas, it's like an art form to him.

I think they're both big spoon/little spoon and switch around. If Newt's not on Thomas' chest, Thomas' head is in Newt's lap or there's just a pile of tangled limbs and they are content.

Newt has low blood sugar so Thomas keeps some stuff on him like juice boxes in case Newt needs it.

my newtmas headcanons (because i saw some people posting their own hc's and had to share mine)

these are mostly based on a modern setting scenario, but some can be pictured in canon aswell ^__^ 🐈🐈‍⬛

thomas has dimples, newt has freckles

thomas has brown hazel-ish eyes, newt has dark brown eyes

thomas’ cheeks are naturally red and newt’s cheeks are pale and, sometimes, they turn pink

newt collects vinyls and books, thomas collects comic books and mini figures

thomas’ love language is ‘physical touch’, so he’s always touching newt; holding his hands, massaging his back, playing with the lobe of his ear, temple kisses, love bites, whatever.

newt’s love language is ‘words of affirmation’, so thomas receives ‘i love you’s and any other sweet words like 50 times a day (he also makes sure he says it a lot)

eye contact, lots of eye contact. especially before they were together

small touches

arms brushing against one another

fingers rushing against one another

thomas still is determined to count every freckle newt has in his face

every time they kiss in a stairwell, thomas makes sure he’s on a higher step so, for some seconds, he’s taller than newt

thomas had this bad habit of biting into his nails when he’s anxious or stressed, newt hates it

when newt is crying because of stress or anger, thomas licks his cheeks to catch his tears and never fails to make the blond chuckle

newt discovered he loves thomas on a random tuesday night. they were dancing and singing with their friends and thomas slipped on air and fell on his butt, and newt was like yeah, he’s so dumb. i do love him

they like to bake their friends’ birthday cakes together as part of their present (thomas is awful at the kitchen, so all he does is basically put the candles on top of the cake once it’s done

thomas is that person to be excitedly yapping in bed about his day and then, in two seconds, is falling asleep mid sentence because he’s so tired. and newt just giggles every time it happens, and kisses his forehead passionately before also falling asleep

sometimes newt feels so homesick it hurts, so thomas does all he can to cheer him up with silly little things, like watching newt’s favorite english movies or listening to songs he listened to when he was a kid, or having a tea party playdate where they pretend they are from the english royalty (yes, it’s so stupid

thomas’ hand is smaller

they both love all rom coms, romantic comedies and christmas classics so, every week precisely, they buy all the sweet treats they want and make popcorn and choose something to watch together (even if it’s not christmas, even if it’s something they’d watched 1000 times already

Newt would totally be a person who shakes their leg (like me and many others with anxiety or adhd) and my hc is that Thomas would always put his hand on newts leg to stop it from shaking but like continue on with the conversation he was having or whatever he was doing and newt just goes bright red and butterflies to the max bc *aAaaaaAAAAhhH* .

Plus Thomas would just be so proud that he flustered newt *Thomas proud face* and all would be happy again :)

Thomas pouts when he fails at pushing Minho off the bed.

Minho makes Thomas watch romance movies on Valentines Day.

They both get flustered at the idea of cuddling together, so it's awkward when they do

Thomas cooks simple stuff, while Newt cooks dessert and complex recipes

Newt is taller than Thomas (just barely, still counts) but Thomas is bigger than Newt, build-wise (looking at the actors) so new headcanon is that Newt is big spoon bc he fits around Thomas just right and he likes feeling safe having someone that solid in front of him, and Thomas is little spoon because he can be comfortably held by Newt and he likes feeling safe with someone having his back.
