While fixing my air conditioner, I needed to frequently debug what HTTP requests my ESP32 was sending to my hue bridge's API when it activates or deactivates my 3d printed dremel-based pump to prevent excess condensate from flooding my flat and jeopardizing my housing situation. If you use nix/home-manager, then my approach could be of perverse interest to you. If not, then feel free to gawk at how complicated I can implement a single alias command.
When my ESP32 detects a pulled-down voltage at
GPIO4
, this means that the water level has reached the upper limit in my condensation collection container. This is because i have
GND
ran out to the bottom of the bin, and
GPIO4
is set to
INPUT_PULLUP
.
GPIO3
is set to the same but I do not turn on the pump for this pin. Instead, i use that pin to know when to turn off the pump once the pump has been turned on at the upper limit.
When the
ESP32
sends a request to my local hue bridge to activate the smartplug where I have my dremel pump plugged in, and nothing happens, I need to figure out what HTTP request is actually going out. I use requestbin for this. The publicly available service became sporadically available many years back, but you can still run it via docker. Once its running, it gives me a URL i can substitute for the Hue bridge API endpoint, I ca inspect
The command for this is
docker run --rm -it -p 8000:8000 weshigbee/requestbin
That's just a little too unwieldy to remember, so I'd like to make a permanent utility to run it. While writing this, i realize i could have just aliased it and added it to my zsh config inside my home-manager config under
programs.zsh.shellAliases
However, in my early-morning sleepy haze, I opted to create a solution as arguably over-engineered as it may be forgivingly considered succinctly practical. I have
\~/.local/bin
in my
home.sessionPath
. I have slowly been evolving how I manage these utilities for the last few months. The primary difference between files in
\~/.local/bin
and a shell alias is that files in that directory can be shell scripts. For example
\~/.local/bin/update
used to be a shell alias bound to
NIXPKGS\_ALLOW\_INSECURE=1 darwin-rebuild switch --flake "$HOME/.nixpkgs#$(hostname)" --impure
Today, it's a shell script:
cd ~/.nixpkgs # capture local binary utilities for file in `find ~/.local/bin/ -maxdepth 1 -type f`; do mv $file ~/.nixpkgs/user-specific/sdevol/.local/bin/ done git add user-specific/sdevol/.local/bin # capture the espanso configuration cp -R ~/.config/espanso/* ~/.nixpkgs/user-specific/sdevol/.config/espanso/ git add ~/.nixpkgs/user-specific/sdevol/.config/espanso NIXPKGS_ALLOW_INSECURE=1 darwin-rebuild switch --flake "$HOME/.nixpkgs#$(hostname)" --impure
My nix configuration lives in
\~/.nixpkgs
. Notice that we are moving files from
\~/.local/bin
into the nix repo under
\~/.nixpkgs/user-specific/sdevol/.local/bin
. As you might have began to suspect, there's some plumbing inside
\~/.nixpkgs/user-specific/sdevol/home.nix
that connects some more dots.
# let localBinDir = ./.local/bin; localBinFiles = builtins.attrNames (builtins.readDir localBinDir); mkLocalBin = name: { source = ./.local/bin/${name}; recursive = true; }; in rec { manual.manpages.enable = false; home = { username = "tastypre"; file = builtins.listToAttrs (map (name: { name = ".local/bin/${name}"; value = mkLocalBin name; }) localBinFiles) // { ".config/zed/settings.json" = { source = ./zed.settings.json; recursive = true; }; ".config/espanso" = { source = config.lib.file.mkOutOfStoreSymlink .config/espanso; recursive = true; };
So, when I type
update
.
Any non-symlinks are moved into the nix configuration
My nix configuration is rebuilt, within which the nix configuration iterates through all files in its local directory
user-specific/sdevol/.local/bin
A
home.file.\*
reference is generated with a symlink configuration for each.
This sequence thus replaces non-symlinked files in
\~/.local/bin
with symlinks to version-controlled references to the same. Therefore, once i have decided i want to make a permanent command for
docker run --rm -it -p 8000:8000 weshigbee/requestbin
. All I need to do is , press up on my keyboard so that the docker command is at the prompt and modify the command to read.
echo docker run --rm -it -p 8000:8000 weshigbee/requestbin > \~/.local/bin/requestbin then
ls ~/.local/bin` reads
ls -l ~/.local/bin  ✔  26ms   18.1.0  10:24:11  lrwxr-xr-x - tastypre 16 Aug 09:49 readlinks -> /nix/store/m2aiz6gszyk3i4hbqn93dpwpsi6f805p-home-manager-files/.local/bin/readlinks .rw-r--r-- 54 tastypre 16 Aug 10:24 requestbin lrwxr-xr-x - tastypre 16 Aug 09:49 screensnap -> /nix/store/m2aiz6gszyk3i4hbqn93dpwpsi6f805p-home-manager-files/.local/bin/screensnap lrwxr-xr-x - tastypre 16 Aug 09:49 tastyspace -> /nix/store/m2aiz6gszyk3i4hbqn93dpwpsi6f805p-home-manager-files/.local/bin/tastyspace lrwxr-xr-x - tastypre 16 Aug 09:49 update -> /nix/store/m2aiz6gszyk3i4hbqn93dpwpsi6f805p-home-manager-files/.local/bin/update
Now, i just run
update
Now,
requestbin
is in
\~/.local/bin/requestbin
but it has been swapped out with a symlink to my nix config's manifested version of the script.
lrwxr-xr-x - tastypre 16 Aug 10:26 requestbin -> /nix/store/vgrdrcnjyhykkx1xq29kg6g2jhbqg0hx-home-manager-files/.local/bin/requestbin
Honestly, that's less keystrokes than adding a shellAlias

IWTV S2: (Un)Answered Questions & Plot Holes (Pt3) + Mayfair Witches 2x3 Deets: Felix & Lestat Timeline?
I made 2 rants about Felix & Lestat in MW 2x3 (x x), but I still have a bunch of questions, AMC, esp. cuz of this dialogue here:
Felix: That feeling's guilt. That's a human thing. Makes them behave like sheep...easy to kill. Lasher: I don't find it easy. Felix: Oh, it'll get easier! Did for me. But I had a good teacher. Lasher: Why? What did he tell you? Please, tell me what he said. Felix: We're meant to cull the herd. It's a natural thing, like Mr. Darwin taught!
According to this exchange, Lestat TOLD Felix that vampires/immortals/monsters/etc are "meant to cull the herd."
Tumblr media
(And we know Felix's teacher is Lestat--Esta confirmed it twice--this isn't Armand or Marius or Bruce or some rando.)
Tumblr media
This implies that when Lestat took Felix in, he was still holding fast to his dogmas about humans being nothing more than The Meat, that vampires were free to kill without guilt/shame/remorse/etc.
That nixes the fan theory than in S3 Lestat can swoop in and say Louis lied/misremembered/etc and LES was the one who actually promoted killing only the Evil Doers (a la book!Lestat in TVL).
Tumblr media
That also nixes the theory that Les was starving in his SadShack the entire time post-Paris, from 1949 - 2022. He would've had to have been showing Felix HOW to cull the herd, by killing humans too.
Tumblr media
1) So when did Les turn to being a shut-in eating rats?
The timeline's weird, cuz Felix is a "millennial," meaning he was born sometime between 1981 - 1996--his actor Gabriel Freilich is 35, born 1989. But Felix looks young though, and definitely talks like he's barely 20ish, like an impressionable dumb kid. He had to have been turned into a vampire and/or orphaned fairly recently, to be looking to Lestat of all people for guidance. It couldn't have been in the 70s, cuz Felix wouldnt've been born yet, and not the 80s-90s either, cuz he'd be just a little kid. So was Felix Turned/orphaned/met Lestat in his 20s-ish, maybe around the 2000s?....
Cuz 2000's the same year LOUIS also stopped killing people! 👀
In 2x8 we see Louis collect ALL of Claudia's diaries AND yellow dress from the Theatre--but that contradicts what Louis told Daniel about them being "scattered" across Paris & NOLA--for some reason Lou DIDN'T have all of them in 1973.
Tumblr media
And we know in the books that the Talamasca found Claudia's diaries & Lestat had her dress, not Louis. My pre-S2 theory was that AMC!Louis/Lestat found Claudia's diaries in the 80s/90s (after 1973), and this caused Louis to spiral & stop killing in 2000.
Tumblr media
But now I'm wondering if LESTAT was the one who found some of Claudia's stuff from NOLA, and told Armand/Loumand about it (or maybe just sent them her stuff?); and Loustat were both triggered TOGETHER, and decided to BOTH stop killing in 2000? 🤔 Louis moves to Dubai & starts The Farm; and Lestat turns to rats?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cuz AMC's clearly not fully following the books, where Armand lied to Loustat that they were dead. Lestat didn't seem SURPRISED to see Louis alive in 2x8, like he thought Louis was dead all this time. He just wanted Louis to confirm if Lou had hurt himself in SanFran--so they clearly didn't talk about it, if they had met before 2x8. 🤔🤔
And Les also asked if Lou's been seeing ghost!Claudia--meaning if the Loustat had met before 2x8, Les hadn't seen ghost!Claudia at that time either. So SOMETHING BAD happened post-1973 & pre-2022 to trigger Lestat seeing Claudia all of a sudden, and starting to eat rats. 🤔🤔🤔
This would then explain how/when Lestat switches up on Felix--telling him to cull the herd one second, but collect rats for Les to eat the next. 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Les couldn't've been seeing Claudia & eating rats when he first met Felix, if he's cognizant enough to teach Felix about culling the herd & trusting his instincts & humans being sheep & we are gods & blahblah. (Also, Les seemed fine in 1973 when he was chatting on the phone with Armand, so...? 🤷)
2) WHO is following Human Rules?
Tumblr media
Cuz here's the thing--Lestat didn't go "crazy" in that SadShack cuz he was guilty/conflicted living by human rules about not killing humans. He was going crazy with GRIEF over Claudia.
WE are assuming that Felix is implying that Les eating rats is what drove Les "crazy," but Lasher doesn't have that context! What Felix says to Lasher still implies that's this is what LESTAT told him would happen--NOT a result of something Felix actually witnessed himself.
Tumblr media
So which one is it? Is Lestat giving this advice, or Felix?
Cuz Lestat would've been grieving over Claudia AND Louis post-1973 regardless. So yeah, maybe this is just what Felix is ASSUMING, that the rats/rules are the problem; same way he idiotically assumes that Lasher being inhuman automatically means human rules about morality shouldn't apply to him.
GOD this show makes ME crazy. WHAT are they doing with the timeline? WHEN is all of this stuff happening, AMC? It MATTERS, contextually. Felix is a throwaway character, but LESTAT IS NOT, and Rolin giving Esta carte blanche to throw this stuff in makes it CANON, because this IS a connected universe.
So what Felix says isn't a throwaway at all--IWTV now has to explain this, too, and the whole dynamic between Lestat & Felix, and the series of events that not only led to Felix spewing all this garbage to Lasher, but also Lestat spewing his nonsense to Felix, in the context of what we saw in S1 & S2.

Graphically Obtuse
Let's not talk about package managers in general, but you may think of nix as a solution when you desire more problems. 'Measure twice, cut once' is a saying, and you'd think a shop with the name Determinate Systems wants to be measurable. But here we are, the 'Universal' nix installer package they've released has no payload and runs everything in the postinstall script, with a separate 7MB binary for Apple Silicon and 8MB for Intel.
!/bin/sh args="--verbose install --no-confirm --diagnostic-attribution=PKG-3C6F9A5D-5AD1-470C-94B2-CF4734B2128A" if /usr/sbin/sysctl -n machdep.cpu.brand_string | /usr/bin/grep -oi "Intel"; then exec ./nix-installer-x86_64-darwin $args else exec ./nix-installer-aarch64-darwin $args fi
Tumblr media
Installer.app therefore has no idea what the size of the actual payload is, but that's only to stay on the measuring theme, there's way many other violations of logic where the people they've asked could've enlightened them/they could've taken hints and learned about Proper Packaging Principles.
Tumblr media
Let's start with their recent announcement post which states it was created for these two benefits: a signed package 'for secur' (obvs), and since it's in the distribution format you can push via MDM (lol).
Why the snark? (Besides the fact very few people in their right mind trust MDM a.k.a. mgmt over UDP with software installation.) Why are those two points not obviously highest-value to have for the nix community? Well when what's really happening under the covers is shelling out to the binary you delivered, your process is not noticeably more advantageous than copying and pasting from the nix-installer README. Yes, you signed a script and sped up the process some amount by not needing to curl ~8MBs before the process begins. But that's not what made this first try at a 'graphical installer' post-worthy. (Hello, soon to be 2024! small 3-ish year slumber for ye olde tumblr).
It's the claim that ~I need to join YET ANOTHER DISCORD to provide feedback~ installation packages cannot 'provide custom parameters' - sure, if you want to build a graphical experience then you need to do more than deliver bits to disk. It's not like they didn't decide to code some stuff, there's two JS functions that run before you even decide to go ahead with the install, because they want to avoid conflicting with a previous install of nix-darwin or something. How folks have handled this is providing a GUI (via an installer plugin or a first-run experience) that takes whatever responses you want to prompt about and writes to an artifact on disk that the installer can also check for to supply defaults (and even enable enterprise distribution if it writes to either preference domains or uses standards like AppConfig).
We're rooting for you, nix friendlies, you're in the MacAdmins Slack... help us help you!

Retro vs Modern #04: Archaeopteryx lithographica
Archaeopteryx lithographica was first discovered in the 1860s, still in the early days of our understanding of dinosaurs, and was a timely example of the sort of transitional form first proposed by Charles Darwin only a couple of years earlier. For over a century it was a famous icon of evolution, and has been part of a lot of weird drama over the years – it's been central to arguments about bird origins, was accused of being a fake, and one specimen even vanished under mysterious circumstances.
1860s-1970s
At the time of its discovery Archaeopteryx was actually fairly quickly accepted as demonstrating an evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds… but sadly this view wasn't to last.
In the early 20th century opinion shifted towards birds not being dinosaurs but instead descended from "thecodont" reptiles (what we'd now call early archosaurs and pseudosuchians). And so for a long time Archaeopteryx ended up being depicted as simply the "first bird", a half-reptile half-avian curiosity.
Reconstructions of it from this time period varied from very good to kind of awkward depending on how much the artist was trying to emphasize its reptilian ancestry, commonly featuring wonky-fingered wings and a scaly lizard-like face. It was also frequently depicted with bright gaudy parrot-like coloration, with a specific yellow-and-blue color scheme becoming a "paleoart meme" so prolific that it would eventually inspire the design of a Pokémon.
2020s
After decades of stagnation the dinosaur-bird link was resurrected in the early 1970s, with the discovery of the bird-like Deinonychus kicking off the Dinosaur Renaissance. Along with the explosion of spectacularly feathered dinosaur fossils from China in the mid-1990s, Archaeopteryx finally began to be properly presented as a feathered dinosaur again.
Continued study of the known Archaeopteryx specimens in the last couple of decades has vastly improved our knowledge of what this animal would have looked like, revealing previously unknown features like the exact plumage arrangement on its wings and legs, and even potentially some details about its coloration.
Living in southern Germany during the Late Jurassic, about 150-148 million years ago, Archaeopteryx inhabited what was then an island archipelago in a shallow tropical sea. It grew to around 50cm long (~1'8") and was almost entirely covered with pennaceous feathers, externally probably just looking like a long-tailed bird.
It had broad wings, with asymmetrical flight feathers similar to those of modern birds but with more extensive coverts, some of which were probably a matte black color. Its legs also sported long "feather trousers" and a "raptor"-like hyperextensible second toe, and there was a slight forked shape to the tip of its tail.
Arguments have gone back and forth about how well it was actually able to fly, with current thinking being that it made short bursts of active flapping flight a little like a modern pheasant – but since its shoulder joints were less mobile than those of modern birds it must have used a different sort of flight stroke to generate lift.
It's no longer always considered to have been the "first bird", or even to have been the direct ancestor of any modern birds. Instead it represents an offshoot lineage of early birds (or very-bird-like dinosaurs) that was just one part of a still-expanding flock of feathery fossil discoveries.

Best Books of 2022 -- In Which I Fail Spectacularly to Compile a "Top Ten" List.
Tumblr media
Image: Goodreads Year in Books 2022 - 166 Books read.
I read 166 books in 2022. Yes, some of them were shorter books: several middle-grade books and a few advance review copies of picture books. Most were novels, though few were truly giant tomes. I really enjoyed most of them. Which is to say, trying to pick the "top ten" was excruciating and an exercise doomed to failure. So... I cheated. Or rather, I modified the goal. Thus I present to you... my top 10 42 books read in 2022 (and even that is fudging things a bit as there are a few instances here of me using a single book to stand in for the entire series if I read the entire series in 2022 and didn't want my list to balloon uncontrollably) organized like so:
Top 18 (Non-Romance) Books read 2022
Top 9 Romances read 2022

Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you? Nope. [Also probably hard to find one since my last name starts with a Z 😝]
Do you have a book of short stories? Because You Love To Hate Me by Soooo many good Authors and BookTubers. [There’s like 13 of each]
Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long? I have shorter and I have longer books but I have exactly 0 in that specific range. [Abhorsen by Garth Nix nearly made the cut at 518 pages...so close!]
Do you have a book that was turned into a movie? The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Do you have a graphic novel? No I don’t 😞. I read quite a few graphic novels but I usually borrow them from the library.
Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors? The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff ❤️ and Because You Love To Hate Me by Various Authors  and BookTubers❤️
This was a ton of fun to fill out! I have a lot more books than I thought I did 🤣

Nix Essen - schlafen

Why Try NaNoWriMo
Tumblr media
So many people have written similar articles before, but I’ll lay out the reasons again here myself.
1. It throws you into a project with a goal and a deadline.
Writing a book is a monumental task. Writing 50,000 words in 30 days is something more defined and achievable. Writing 1667 words a day breaks that achievable goal into easily accomplishable tasks. Placing those tasks in November gives you actual dates to work with.
Don’t underestimate how valuable that can be. Never feel like having a deadline is somehow incompatible with the creative process.
Most authors write books under deadlines given to them by agents and editors. I don’t think it would be a stretch to say that most authors need these deadlines in order to call a draft finished and send it off to be read. Deadlines are enormous motivators. They are essential to the creative process.
2. The pep talks!
Not only does NaNo break down the enormous task of writing a novel into manageable tasks, but it supplies you with pep talks from amazing authors to help motivate you along the way! Each week of each year, they release a new one. Not only can you read the ones from your year, but you can also read the past ones stored on their website.
Here are some lovely past pep talks from authors you may know and love:
Stephanie Perkins
Garth Nix
Rainbow Rowell
Philip Pullman
Neil Gaiman
Lemony Snicket
John Green
Jenny Han
Brandon Sanderson
3. Everybody’s doing it.
Writing is lonely. Every writer knows this. When you participate in NaNoWriMo, you get to draft with thousands of people from all over the world. You can follow NaNo on twitter and participate in writing sprints. You can talk to other writers in the forums. You can even attend NaNo events in your town and write with other participants in local cafes, libraries, and bookstores!
If you don’t have a writing community, this is your chance to find one!
4. It knows what’s important about a first draft.
The most common argument against NaNoWriMo is: YOU CAN’T WRITE A DECENT NOVEL IN A MONTH! To which one can only reply: this is correct.
First drafts aren’t supposed to be good. They’re supposed to exist. Every book on every bookshelf was once a terrible first draft. Books become good in revisions. First drafts are the raw material authors use to create great books. They’re required for a great book, but they aren’t great books in and of themselves.
NaNoWriMo knows this. It focuses only on what’s important: finishing that first draft. It gives you everything you need to do this, besides the words themselves: deadlines, trackers, motivation, and a world-wide community.
If you don’t believe that a book written in a month could ever be turned into something great, here’s a short list of published NaNo books (over 400 are listed on their website.)
Bestselling NaNoWriMo books:
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
The Darwin Elevator by Jason M. Hough
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress by Marissa Meyer
Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
5. Because you can’t lose for trying.
If I’ve convinced you that NaNoWriMo is pretty cool, but you’re just not sure you can do this, whether you’re extremely busy and don’t have much time for writing, or don’t have a fleshed out story idea or haven’t tried to write a novel before…
I’m not going to convince you that you’ll be able to write a 50k word novel in one month. That would be insincere of me. I don’t know whether you can do it or not–most people can’t.
I do know this.
You can’t lose for trying.
Whether you complete 30,000 words of utter nonsense before giving up, or quit on Day 1 with 800 words, those words are still yours. They’re yours and having written them, terrible or not, will help you become a better writer. Every word you write will help you improve.
You’ll fail many times as a writer. Every writer has drawers and files full of half-finished, horrible stories. Every writer knows you need at least a handful of those–maybe more–before you can begin that novel that will be the one.
What matters is not giving up before you reach it.
So if you don’t think you’re up for NaNo, try anyway, and fail one step further toward the story that will succeed.
And who knows. Maybe you’ve already failed enough. Maybe this will be the story that succeeds.
If I’ve convinced you to take the NaNo plunge, be sure to check out my October NaNo preparation tips.

It had taken Lovisa what could easily be ages getting used to this city. Not only to its sheer size and the distance, at which everything was sprawled - to an extent, she had travelled a lot back in Sweden too, and she was used to it.
What she wasn’t used to, however, was how lively this place was. The peace and quiet that, in her mind, had become synonymous with her home and her every vision for a dream home, had no place here. Every second, something was happening. There were so many people all over the place, and so many places to be and sights to see and things to do. This city truly never slept.
Her heart still beating a mile a minute, Lovisa let her body fall back onto the asphalt. Why had she done this? Why hadn’t she acted a little earlier? She could swear she had heard a loud crack. Most likely the guy’s sunglasses, or phone, or something. He was alive and unharmed, though. At least that.
As she made an effort to get up, the realization she must have hit her head flooded her mind. She had fallen badly before, never to the extent of fainting, but she had had the world spin around her. The dizziness overcame her momentarily, and the world went dark. Had that not happened, it would have dawned on her just where the guy’s face had landed.
By the time Lovisa came to again, the shock and hurt ebbing away as the pulsating pain in her back and buttocks bit into her, everything fell into place in her head like puzzle pieces. The case. The guy. That car. The guy’s phone. It had all happened too fast. Again, she had reacted on impulse, throwing herself in danger’s way to protect him, dancing on a line over an abyss.
“What…?” She groaned, closing her eyes. The pain was like a boomerang, hitting her back in the head and back once more before it lessened. Then, finally, his words started to make sense. “Follow you? No, man.” They weren’t at work. She could talk to him like that. Even though he’d been a suspect in a case she was working on. Right? “I’m just taking a walk. I had a long fucking day. Come on.” When she closed her eyes again, two tears slid off her face. That day was being far too long - and, at this point, it felt like it’d never end…
Sergio figured there was more to it than that, and that was when he got a better look at her clothes. “Bullshit. Who goes out for a walk in heels and a dress?”
He was about to corner her even further with questions until he saw the tears forming in her eyes, his aggression fizzling out almost instantly. He let out a shallow sigh, his shoulders loosening up as he nixed his next argument.
People crying around him always made him uncomfortable, and his default solution was to walk away whenever that happened, especially if he was the cause of the person’s tears. However, two things stopped him from doing so right then: one, she clearly was having a rough day even before she encountered him; two, even though she had a rough day, she still found it within herself to save him from getting run over. He also got the impression that she may not have known who he was before simply acting to save whoever was dumb enough to be texting while walking across the street. Sergio usually let Darwinism take its course for something like that and leave the scene before any more trouble befell him.
He then wondered if he would have done the same if the roles were reversed. Only ta make sure nothin’ could be held against me. Them law books as thick as they is, there’s prolly a law sayin’ they can book ya ass if ya don’t save a stupid cop from they dumb-ass decisions. That’s what he told himself.
And yet...he couldn’t explain it, but there was something about that purple dress that would have made him act even faster than usual if the roles were reversed...
In any case, it just didn’t feel right to leave her crying like that. Instead of looking annoyed, he fidgeted where he stood a bit, sticking his hands in his hoodie pockets. “Look, it’s...none a’ my business,” he said to her, his voice and expression calmer.
His feet almost tingled with how much he felt he needed to leave before things got more awkward; Trish was waiting for him somewhere in Central Park, or so he assumed. Thinking about it...he never hit send before the car almost hit him. He didn’t memorize her number, either. There was no confirmation that Trish was even there.
But he couldn’t just leave the woman crying like this. Perhaps the way she was dressed helped reduce the tension between them. He had almost forgotten the woman was a cop upon seeing her in that dress.
He looked at her, trying to think of something to say to make things less awkward...but he couldn’t. Yet in his expression, there was a twinge of concern visible.
@redemptioninchaos from here.
Work was work, and when she was at work Lovisa practically forgot about her personal life - and vice versa. While she did expect to get a call for a case that could need urgent action, most of the time her private life was calm and uneventful. Most of the time being whenever her sister wasn’t out there stirring trouble. Now that she was in the States, however, there wasn’t much Lovisa could do about Alberta. She had to hope her sister wouldn’t flip out and try to hurt someone more seriously, their parents especially.
In her free time, she’d work out, go to dancing lessons and try to make friends and have fun, and read books... whenever she wasn’t on Ember herself, keeping an eye out for a potential date. One or two of her colleagues had come across her profile there, and there had been a few comments, but in the end Lovisa had been left alone. And a part of her was happy with how things were.
She’d felt a shiver of displeasure down her back listing a few details about herself, like her height and age, and the more younger people she had come across on the app, the more disheartened she had felt. She was nearing her forties... and she had only had a couple relationships until then. This was a foreign territory to her, dating. Most of the time she would stick to her age range, or try to pick up conversations with people a little older than her. They hadn’t lasted for too long, though. And the younger folks whom she came across while on the app made her feel painfully unprepared.
...Well hadn’t that been a damn night. Lovisa usually thought well of herself, without exaggerating or underestimating her looks and abilities - but in that very moment she hated herself miserably. She had gotten stood up, and the date had been the one thing she had been looking forward to that day. Was she too sharp sometimes? Or was she too soft? She squeezed her eyes shut, stopping the tears from even coming to her eyes. No, she wouldn’t let this ruin her day.
The screech of tires made her snap right back to reality in an instant. Anger and fear exploded inside her veins, and she tried to push down the instinct to scream at the careless driver. Only, the realization that came next grabbed her by the throat. The car was about to run over that guy. No! Stop, for fuck’s sake! Lovisa didn’t stop to think. “Watch out!!” Lovisa yelled, throwing her arms around him and pulling him back and away from the car. He landed on top of her, and she swore, letting go once she made sure they were both alive, her eyes seeking his. “Oh my god, are you okay? Fuck, that car could’ve hit you...”

Effective Bash: I Know It Hurts but Put Your Pipes and Logical Operators at the End of the Line
TL;DR
Despite how nice it looks to have the pipes line up on the left or to see the logical operators at the beginning of what they protect, the backslashes at the end of line are extremely sensitive to what follows them so if you're working in any context other than a rich text editor that knows only to place a single newline after them you'll screw up your ability to copy and paste the text into a terminal safely. It doesn't take long to get used to writing this way and it also works very well interactively.
# Good git ls-files -z | xargs -0 cat | sha256sum # Bad git ls-files -z \ | xargs -0 cat \ | sha256sum # Bad git ls-files -z | xargs -0 cat | sha256sum # Good { cd dir && git sync } || exit # Bad { cd dir \ && git sync } || exit # Bad { cd dir && git sync } || exit
A really nice trick if you're using a sane OS is to construct your example commands interactively at the prompt and then lean on rectangular selection to extract it for your text.
$ { > echo foo > echo bar > echo bat > } | > sed 's|a|charnock|' foo bcharnockr bcharnockt
I write a lot of bash.
Say what you will about it. It's the shell of the world (unless you've gone mad). Being effective in it means that I can accomplish almost anything that's possible to accomplish via the CLI on any system I'm on without access to (many) external tools or languages. It was purpose built to shell out, consume STDIN, construct new commands out of disparate pieces, and continue on. It's a paragon of terseness if that's what you're trying to do. If you're trying to do pretty much anything else, look elsewhere.
I write nearly everything in a terminal emulator in GNU Emacs, from software to blog posts to journal entries. I prefer reading in Emacs as well if only because I have access to all my usual search tools and navigational keys. This means that I'm a bit obsessive about plain text formatting where others let their WYSIWYG editors line wrap for them. I'm especially sensitive to code blocks in documentation like README's and how they're formatted. Most people seem to just wrap their code in a code block and be done with it, trusting that eventually someone will view it in a browser which will take care of the formatting for them.
This is a terrible restriction on where you can view your documentation or your shell scripts and removes your ability to use standard *nix tooling to extract the scripts safely and apply them in a terminal.
Years ago when I was working at a large python startup I was complaining to the Chief Architect about how it was hard to keep my lines under the 120 character limit they imposed because python is whitespace sensitive and I prefer descriptive names for my functions and a function decomposition that follows the *nix/clean code philosophy.
def a_long_descriptive_name(a, b, c): pass def another_even_more_descriptive_name(d, e, f): pass def boy_howdy_can_you_tell_i_was_a_java_dev_and_still_pretty_much_am_QMARK(g, h, i): pass calling_my_functions_all_together(a_long_descriptive_name(1, 1434, 14), another_even_more_descriptive_name("blah", "boo", "foo"), boy_howdy_can_you_tell_i_was_a_java_dev_and_still_pretty_much_am_QMARK(True, False, True))
Madness.
He pointed out that python natively (like, at the parser), supports the idea of list continuation in it's syntax.
x = [1,2,3] y = [1, 2, 3,] x == y # => True
so
def a_long_descriptive_name(a, b, c): pass def another_even_more_descriptive_name(d, e, f): pass def boy_can_you_tell_i_was_a_java_dev_and_still_pretty_much_am_QMARK( g, h, i): pass calling_my_functions_all_together( a_long_descriptive_name(1, 1434, 14), another_even_more_descriptive_name("blah", "boo", "foo"), boy_can_you_tell_i_was_a_java_dev_and_still_pretty_much_am_QMARK( True, False, True))
is totally valid, not altogether unreadable, and requires no \ trickery.
It was recalling this that lead me to the realization that bash has similar parser level support for informing it that you're not quite done typing the command out: control operators. While the definition is useful you can seem them in action in the manual in the Lists of Commands entry.
Specifically, if your command as presented to bash does not end in a newline, &, or ; (and ;; sometimes), bash natively understands that you mean to keep telling it what to do and presents you with your $PS2. To see this in action:
$ { > echo foo > echo bar > echo bat > } | > sed 's|a|charnock|' foo bcharnockr bcharnockt
Other tools have similar behavior:
$ python3 Python 3.7.6 (default, Dec 30 2019, 19:38:28) [Clang 11.0.0 (clang-1100.0.33.16)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> x=[1,2,3] >>> y=[1, ... 2, ... 3, ... ] >>> x == y True >>> $ irb irb(main):001:0> x=[1,2,3] => [1, 2, 3] irb(main):002:0> y=[1, irb(main):003:1* 2, irb(main):004:1* 3,] => [1, 2, 3] irb(main):005:0> x == y => true irb(main):006:0> user=> (def x [1 2 3]) #'user/x user=> (def y [1 2 3]) #'user/y user=> (= x y) true user=>
As you can see this knowledge is generally useful in most dynamic contexts.
One thing that never occurred to me though is that with proper rectangle selection support (you're using a sane window manager right?) the marriage of this feature with that lets you construct an example at the CLI and then copy/paste it easily into your editor. Look at any of the examples above and you can easily see the rectangle you would extract.
This is yet another reason why why your PS1 should absolutely terminate in a single '^\$', whatever else precedes it. The fact that ruby and python both have their PS2's constructed to be identical in textual length to their PS1 I think is proof enough that I'm not the first person to realize this.
In case you're worried that this will make using your history search or completion facilities harder, don't be. In bash at least (I can't speak to the other interpreters just now), setting the cmdhist shopt tells bash to attempt save the multiline command you entered as a single history entry for later search and execution.
Go forth and script.
