QL - Currently Watching

🇹🇭 4 Minutes [6/8] - Finally some answers. I haven't read all the theories floating around about this last episode and what it means, but I'm firmly on the side of, there is another alternative timeline, probably from when Tyme is dying at the start of the show, and also very much in agreement with everything @lurkingshan wrote here that these are just imagined do-overs and nothing will actually change in the real world. Which would be my preferred way.

🇹🇭 Addicted Heroin [2/10] - Haven't watched this weeks episode yet. My review for the first two is here.

🇹🇼 First Note of Love [4/12] - I like them a lot. And I like the pacing of this. I love the intro song. But with a second couple being introduced I think I'm gonna get frustrated having to wait a week for a 20 minute episode. I felt that way a lot during Kiseki.

🇯🇵 I Hear the Sunspot [10/12] - I am annoyed.

🇹🇭 I Saw You In My Dream [7/12] - May the boyfriend era commence. I am enjoying this one. I'm guessing we still have a bit of angst coming and I'm hoping for a good explanation for the dreams.

🇯🇵 Mitsuya Sensei no Keikakutekina Ezuke [6/7] - Just such an incredible show. This week brought the pain and I'm still unwell. As if Frito getting sick wasn't heart breaking enough, that ending left me in tears. I cannot believe we only have one episode left. I am not ready to say goodbye to the three of them.

🇹🇭 Monster Next Door [6/12] - My favourite thing about this is definitely Big. His presence on screen is great. But I'm not fully connecting yet for some reason.

🇹🇭 Peaceful Property [1/10] - It's a lot of fun. Yeah, I know it's not a bl. But it's bl adjacent so it goes here. Also in my head it's gonna be a bl no matter what. Possibly even with a gl side couple. The mind is a powerful thing.

🇯🇵Sugar Dog Life [4/10] - I love Isumi. I really liked that they didn't drag the girl storyline and it served it's purpose. Isumi is now very much aware of it's feelings. I'm looking forward to the date episode.

🇯🇵 Takara No Vidro [9/11] - Takara, my love. This boy has my whole heart. I can't believe I'll have to say goodbye to then tomorrow. I'm bracing for part pain, part happy. Please Japan don't let me down.

🇹🇭 The Loyal Pin [1/16] - I'm waiting to binge.

🇹🇼 The On1y One [4/10] - This show will hurt and I will love every second of it. I really like the look of this show and how we get those little insights into Jiang at the end of the episode. The actors are doing great and I specially love Benjamin Tsang facial expressions. I'm curious to see these two together and how their dynamic will work considering their circumstances. Also, always happy to see the revolving door of cameos Taiwan always grace us with.

🇯🇵Twilight Out of Focus - It's so beautiful. I'm enjoying that we get different couples even if sometimes it feels like we could have more time with them. I like Rei/Shion a lot, but I do miss Mao and Hisashi. 🇹🇭 The Trainee [10/12] - Just to get it out if the way, the Bamhee/Judy storyline was definitely the right call and @lurkingshan was right all along. Also the way the office came together was delightful and it's great to see Pah getting everyone together and once again being the best friend ever. Now. THE OFFICE FLIRTING!!! I was losing my mind giggling like an idiot. I love them. It's pretty obvious at this point that it's mutual and of course Ryan will need to actually be told that, but I still think Jane will wait until the internship is over before confessing or starting anything official. I can't wait to watch all the interns reaction next week. I love it here.

QL - Finished

🇯🇵 Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! - I'm disappointed in this one. It started off so strong but by the end it lost me. I love Hiroko but I feel like they betrayed the character. And that ending with the kiss in the office was ridiculous. Actually most of the end was weird in the way that it seemed to contradict what came before. I like that they finally got together but it didn't feel as good as it could've.

🇹🇭 Century of Love - Started of great and imo fell apart by the end. I don't think it was consistent all the way through and the mythology was all over the place. Daou did an amazing job though. Also Ju is one of the greatest female characters of the year.

🇯🇵 Cosmetic Playlover - Pretty show. Final thoughts here.

🇹🇭 Knock Knock, Boys! - Probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. It's great. I like the development of both couples. Even if near the end I got a tiny bit annoyed with Peak, I really liked the conclusion of it all. Latte is a great character and the very rare slut unjudged by the narrative.

🇹🇭🇨🇳 Meet You At the Blossom - Look it's great that we got a chinese bl, but this was not it for me. Let's hope this one helps get others made though.

🇹🇭Love Sea - It was fine. I enjoyed Mut but in general I just never connected to this show. And Muk annoyed me to no end. I was so happy to see Aya again and now I just wanna forget that she was ever in this and simply remember her as Yiwa.

🇹🇭 SunsetxVibes - I don't even have words. I don't know if it was my lack of attention or if it never actually made sense but I never really got what the mythology was all about apart from inspiring a truly horrendous looking necklace. I was slogging though this one and I guess the finale was fine.

🇹🇭 This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans - The sides were great, their chemistry was on point. I really wanna see them again. The mains were my favourite thing about Pit Babe but I just didn't like them here.

🇹🇭 The Rebound - I just have to accept that MeenPing will always have bad scripts. They are pretty together but this was a mess.

2023 BLs Wrapped: My MDL if anyone wants it/wants to add me/judge me

Number of BLs this year and hours: 30 completed, 5 in progress so 35 total. 319 individual episodes total. Assuming 40-minute episodes on average, that's 12,760 minutes, or 212.7 hours of my life this year. (277.3 hours if I include all the shows I watched) -- and this is just shows I watched for the first time. It's not including the at least dozen rewatches of The Eclipse, the three of My School President, one or two of Moonlight Chicken, Not Me and Bad Buddy...

You primarily watched BLs from Thailand. And a hell of a lot of it was GMMTV, but that's basically to be expected considering the rate they fire out shows.

You spent way too much time thinking about these characters: Ray (Only Friends), Alan (Moonlight Chicken), Heart (Moonlight Chicken), Ai Di (Kiseki: Dear to Me) and always, always Akk (The Eclipse)

Your favorite show was Only Friends (closely followed by Till the World Ends, Unintentional Love Story, Our Dating Sim, Moonlight Chicken, Manner of Death, He's Coming to Me, all of which I watched for the first time this year whether they aired this year or not)

Your overall BL mood was Irreverent - I don't control what I watch or when. I don't know who does. But I have a hard lean towards things that are a little silly.

You read the most fanfiction about: I didn't really read much, but probably SandRay - Only Friends, by virtue of the fact that's also what I wrote for. (I just looked at my AO3 bookmarks and it's literally Rowan and Sarah. Hi!)

Another of your favorites from this year was: Laws of Attraction - I'm still not entirely sure I know what the fuck that show even was, but it was fun and silly. Neither are finished yet, but I do anticipate Twins and Cooking Crush being overall favs too, unless either of them do something genuinely stupid in the next few episodes.

The soundtracks you listened to the most: I don't really listen to soundtracks, but probably MSP OST by virtue of it being what I cooked to for the early part of the year before I started using podcasts instead. I have a fair few plays of Let's Try and Over the Moon, too.

Your favorite acting pair was: I hope you're all sitting down. First Kanaphan and Khaotung Thanawat. I've very much enjoyed watching Fourth Nattawat and Gemini Norawit, too. They're sweethearts.

A little bit late, but I wanted to make sure to do this for my own records! I've watched so many shows now, it helps to have something down more formally to remember stuff.

A few notes:

This includes shows that started in 2022 and finished in 2023.

No shows that are currently still airing - how the ending lands is too critical for me.

There's some shows I know I'm going to love that I just haven't had time to see yet, so if there are any shocking absences, that's probably why.

Total # of QL watched: 37 (35 BLs, 2 GLs) (really looking forward to more GL offerings next year)

Favorite Thai shows:

Bed Friends

I was not the biggest fan of Cutie Pie, so entered this one with a fair amount of skepticism. But what a lovely surprise. Uea was such an incredible lead and so well-characterized, his trauma was handled seriously, and though there were occasional hiccups due to drama, overall King was such a respectful and supportive partner. And let's not forget the cat ears.

Laws of Attraction

What a ride this show was! I had not watched To Sir with Love, so had no familiarity with Jam or Film, but they were amazing here. The side couple of disaster muffin + loving bodyguard were pitch perfect, there were fantastic women characters who actually had significant roles in the story, and who can forget our wonderful chaotic Nawin? The story was compelling, the emotional points hit, and even when it leaned towards the ridiculous, it always remained aware of what it was.

My School President

I still remember watching the trailer for Our Skyy 2 and noticing two random dudes I had never seen before. Little did I know!

I don't have much to say except that this was pure charm from start to finish, and Fourth & Gemini were a delight. Pure comfort watch.

Unforgotten Night

I SAID WHAT I SAID! (and yes this aired in 2022, I was late)

Look, I know a lot of people thought of this purely as a trash watch, but it's so much more than that. I wrote a whole post on it. It was fantastic. I apologize for nothing.

Favorite Korean shows:

Our Dating Sim

I adored this show from start to finish. I could understand the motivations of both characters, I was deeply invested in their relationship, and they felt so utterly natural once they got together. 10/10, no notes.

Jun & Jun

This was a little messy at times, and missed an opportunity to lean more into D/s dynamics, but I really liked all the characters, the leads had great chemistry, and it was refreshing to see a Korean BL be more open about sexual desire in a relationship.

Favorite Japanese Shows:

The End of the World With You

This one could have easily gone off the rails. End of the world stories can be very tricky to pull off. But there was such a solid emotional core to the storytelling, and it kept such a hold of my heart.

My Personal Weatherman

One thing I think Japan does extremely well is stories about people who have extremely deep internal lives, but don't show much on the surface. As someone quite introverted, who keeps a lot of things on the inside, I relate a lot to this. This show did such a good job of showing how challenging it can be to communicate with those we love, and the rewards once you are able to break through and really understand each other.

Favorite Taiwanese Shows:

Kiseki: Dear to Me

Of course it's Kiseki. This series was amazing. I don't care we never really understood any of the mafia stuff, that was all set dressing for some of the best couple work ever.

Midnight Museum

I will never stop calling this a BL. Some day GMMTV will realize that Gun has too much chemistry with other people to keep him only with Off. Also, we got Nanon playing evil, which was so sexy.

Alright! A bunch of stuff got announced to celebrate the series' 8th anniversary today, so lets break down the most important things regarding our favorite group, TRIGGER!

You've probably heard this stuff already but hey. I do what I want and I'm making this post anyway.

First up, let's get all the smaller 8th Anniversary stuff out of the way! Plenty of stuff has been changed and announced to help bring the series into its latest era, and all of it is very exciting!

Special Anniversary visuals by the series' main character designers have been shared and released!

... Also I feel like it's worth noting that Arina-sensei has made it clear that we've reached TRIGGER's numbers in terms of anniversaries, and that reflects in her art. Meaning, maybe it'll reflect in other things too...?!

The game is hosting weekly free 11-pulls which bring back Heavenly Visitor, Wish Voyage, Kiseki, Music in Your Thoughts, and Light Future cards! On top of that, there's a log-in bonus for nanakores and 80 Stellar Stones in total!

The game has been refreshed with a few new features like notifications on screen when you get a message from an idol/manager, more idol storage, and even special voice lines that play before a live, after an auto live finishes, and if you manage to full-combo the song. The "hey, there's an event going on" home screen line has been replaced, too, thank fuck.

A new Namjatown collab has been announced that covers the idol in glowy clothing!

The official website has been completely overhauled including brand-new bios for the idols!

Now, onto the really fun stuff...

Shuffle Units are back!!

As part of the yearly anniversary story, we're finally getting Shuffle Units including Re:vale and ZOOL! As of Producer Letter 26, it's been confirmed that these units will be themed and have special songs for each, but the themes haven't been shared yet! We may have to read the two-part story to find out!

Part 1 will release September 5th, and Part 2 will release September 15th! It won't be voiced, though. Voice acting will come at a later date.

Kuji Memorial Video & Cards!

What's likely the most surprising thing of all for the anniversary is that it's big surprise looks back on all of the dramas IDOLiSH7's cast have starred in over the last seven years - down to releasing an animated memorial video that covers everything from La Danse Macabre to the Last Dimension musical! There's a lot of shots of TRIGGER to spot, so if you haven't seen it yet, go watch it! It's pure emotional eye candy!

On top of that, the yearly revival gacha deals with it, too, featuring special UR cards that focus on specific scenes from Mechanical Lullaby, i7 Police, Hoshimeguri (now known in English as The Stargazer?), Karatoga, La Danse Macabre, Mission (Yamato's movie from Part 3), and BLAST! (Part 5 drama)

The best part is all the old cards, including the same kujis shown here, are in these pulls, too! Best of luck if you try to bring them home!

Producer Letter #26 Takeaways

As is tradition with i7 anniversaries, there's a new Producer Letter that goes over what the current and future plans for the series are that has a few interesting tidbits fans should be aware of! I'll break it down, but if you can, I suggest reading it in your own time.

The team is still figuring out what exactly comes "beyond the period" in terms of the story, so no updates on that just yet.

They're wanting to do another 16 person live, but they're trying to book a "difficult venue" so many fans can see it. Some fans believe this to be a hint that they're trying to book the Tokyo Dome. 😱 But 16 person live isn't an impossibility!

They've implies that they're working out international distribution and screening for the recent movie Beyond the Period! So sit tight if you haven't gotten a hold of it for yourself yet!

i also really want to make a few art pieces of the kiseki dear to me crew and what pokemon teams they'd have but it's a daunting project i just haven't brought myself to start yet.

Between my SAD hitting me like a hammer post-New Year's - not so much depression as bone-crushing exhaustion - and the way work has been. Something else. I just. That's all I can really say about it. Anyway. I haven't been able to find the energy or the mental or emotional space to deal with anything else that requires thought. So I haven't managed to finish Kiseki yet, or start watching any of the other 15 bls on my to-watch list, but what I have been doing is spending too much time vegetating on the couch, napping, and - in the bits of time I'm actually awake - speed-running the first season of ... god, what is this show called? New Amsterdam. Because what is life, if not laughing at teevee doctors using words like "cisplatinum" like it's 1979 and smacking up hard against the realization that not a single person in this hospital can possibly be BLS-certified? I also have thrown a pillow at my teevee and yelled that we need a goals of care discussion about six times already.

Sure, I'll go along for the ride for a direct blood transfusion from a random O-negative donor in the OR when a winter storm takes down the entire power grid and your backup generator dies for hours and hours after the only person who knows how to fix it electrocutes himself. That's just good drama. But oh my god you cannot expect me not to laugh at the fact that apparently nobody involved with this show thought to send anybody to a class to learn how to do basic CPR.

Current WIP: uuuhhhhh there's the lwj chronic pain fic i started recently and that one ramking fic i started months ago but still haven't finished and also the Guardian birthday fic i started awhile back because i got caught up in thinking about how like half the characters in that are like at least over 100 years old (and Shen Wei who is over 10000) and was wondering how they would feel about the concept of birthdays and how they would work for them and if they even mean anything to them and if Shen Wei even remembers when his is anymore and i got a little angsty over it so i started writing about it lol

OK I hope you don't mind me adding on to your post about the aikatsu system but omg

yuuki aine of aifure has a goal to make as many friends as she possibly can, and does so with ease. so much so that if she ever faces an issue (i.e. short staffed in a theater bit) she can call as many as she needs and of course, they'll come to help her

at first it's just a cute charm point thing about her personality, but later on, mio says aine's friendships hold a special power, their "frienergy"

aine and mio essentially use this to win the diamond friends tournament in season one?? which of course could be considering cheating if we look at this seriously, a rookie idol and her barely more professional partner beating love me tear after only a year spent training for it? that aside though, this means aine, or, possibly thousands of people she's befriended, all hold this magic power to do...something

is aine giving these people powers? does she not have this power herself, can she only grant it? and if she's the one giving it to them, that means that after discovering she can do this this, she's making a conscious decision to keep using this to propel her career forward??

that sounds dark and I adore aine, so I don't want to go there but like. wowie

so aine possesses actually legitimate magical friendship powers. well in season 2, in order to help free alicia's kingdom from a seemingly endless and severe blizzard, the girls travel there to perform lives and cheer up the people there while hibiki tries to repair her friendship with alicia.

they defeat the blizzard by using the power of friendship, singing, and a big dramatic scene where they all ask the storm to go away. and it does?? it just goes away and everything returns to normal

this season also introduces the jewel coords that, much like star wings, choose idols to wear them. so the aikatsu system's back at it again with the sentience ig

there was also this one episode of aifure where maika, ema, kaguya & sakuya stumble upon an actual magic artifact that causes the units to shuffle over and over and it felt so weird like. ok aikatsu is just confirming, in their own words, magic is at least real in this world/season

kiseki raki can somehow just make jewel dresses and star wings! this is either pure luck or some sort of msgic she herself possesses, but it's strange to see idols in aipara just..accept this, as if they've seen someone just do that on their own before.

when aipara first came out that made me wonder, who actually makes the star wings and jewel coords? the wings always perfectly match the coords, could there be people with the same magic as raki making them for the system?

Is the aikatsu system actually does have this little pocket dimension, could people with powers similar to raki be creating the wings that it grants to idols, or are they purely spawned by the system itself? if so, the system is an extremely talented designer ngl

this would also mean the jewel coords are specifically designed by the system in aifure. these coords embody an idol's spirit and personality, the system clearly knows them well if it designs them itself, this means it's possible that either;

the system already knows who it will grant these coords to. maybe they haven't debuted yet even, it's just waiting. it's already got the coords ready.

every idol has a potential jewel coord but only a select few are actually unlocked

or, they're generated randomly the second the system decides it's time to give them to the idol

normal jewel coords are granted mid-performance, unlike raki's, and the original coord the idol was wearing morphs into said jewel one. when they finish performing, they look at their cards, and they've changed to the new coord. does this mean the old one is just gone?? the previous coord is always a PR, this means either a PR has just disappeared completely and an out-of-aikatsu real world card set has been overwritten by the system, or that the system somehow transports the original cards someone, possibly back into their cardbook

ogkatsu really didn't dive into magic stuff much, aside from the stuff you covered in stars lore with the reality-bending stages and filming and all. yurika is not actually a vampire and they make a point of it, she's just really good at staying in character. sakuea's not really a fairy, sora does seem to have some mysterious magic stuff going on but it's rarely used more than once, and never addressed so there's not much there

this is so long but. I have been collecting these thoughts for way too long

Well, October and November were kind of busy in real life for me. And not to say, chapter 104 was one very hard to translate... You will know what I mean when you see it for yourself. There’s long MEANINGFUL dialogue which is supposes to make a nice bridge between the past and present, but with no full context yet. Anyway after a lot of feedback, it’s almost finished and should be ready to go... maybe still today.

Chapter 105 is rough translated already, so maybe a week or two. Should be out before Christmas!

Rem has father issues, right? It reminds me of Akashi, so it’s a perfect fit. 

Rem is also the leader of them. That makes it a perfect match to Akashi. 

They do have a lot in common, as far as I can see. 

Rem’s hobby is playing shogi. Same with Akashi. 

Rem is the leader among the other devils as he is the son of Mikukier Arlond, the King of Devils. 

Akashi was the captain back in Teikou. He is quite well-known as the leader of GOM, though. 

Akashi might be using others like how Rem uses others. Like their favorite game: shogi. 

Akashi is part of the student council in Rakuzan. 

Now guess what… Rem is the student council president in their school. 

WOW. 

Aomine Daiki as Nanashiro Mage: 

Aomine as Mage. 

One major reason: BICEPS. 

Mage is quite a muscle man, and I can clearly see Aomine as like that. 

They are prone to be tsundere— you know, Aomine is a tsundere too lol — yet they release such powerful aura. 

If only I had that game, I would go to Mage’s route on the bat… even though my favorite is Rem

Mage uses force to get the heroine, but I don’t see Aomine doing that at all. That’s one thing that differentiate these two.

I can see Aomine as gentle as possible though. 

Remember that photo whereas Aomine’s school had this festival? And the basketball club was doing a track and field portion? 

MAGE’S SPORT IS TRACK AND FIELD. lol 

Kagami Taiga as Tachibana Lindo: 

Hold up… before you can say anything about this, read this… RED HAIRED. 

I did not — maybe I did — based their hair just to match them, you know. 

Lindo is very talented on housework, as Ritsuka — Lindo’s supposedly younger sister — said in episode 2 or 3. 

Lindo loves cooking and very protective over Ritsuka. 

Kagami is like that, isn’t he? 

Kuroko and Himuro are the people he deeply cares. 

Kagami cooks as well. 

Both wear aprons as well. It’s canon in both parties, so don’t worry lol 

Kagami doesn’t want Kuroko to be near the GOM… well, that was in my imagination but still! 

Kagami declared a war on Aomine. STILL MY IMAGINATION lol

… Basically the Lindo in the sport AU lol 

Kise Ryouta as Sogami Urie: 

I don’t have any ideas why I partnered Kise to him. He’s my least favorite, if you asked me. 

Although, he still one of my favorites. Just the last one. 

And you guys know me, I love Kise so much. 

Okay, anyway. Kise is a lady killer. He can handle ladies way better than the rest. So basically, he isn’t a lady killer yet he can handle them ladies. 

Urie has a beautiful face. As well as Kise. 

Urie is in the tennis club… Kise can copy other’s skills at any sports he wishes, right? 

NOW I WANT TO SEE KISE PLAYING TENNIS. 

Similarities between these two is hard to compromise. 

If ever, I can see Urie doing what Kise is doing to the heroine, to be honest. 

Midorima Shintaro as Roen: 

Pfft… Midorima as a Pomeranian though!

Not only I had a hard time on Kise, I also did with Midorima. 

But I remembered something: Midorima and Murasakibara aren’t getting along. They even fought before! 

You’ll see why once you read Murasakibara’s. 

Roen is a faithful dog to Lord Maksis. Midorima is also faithful to Oha Asa — Akashi too — and I believe Midorima’s quote is like this: Let the GOD decides. 

Roen can be heard speaking formality. Midorima is also very formal, but he can be blunt he is wants to — which is all the time — and it doesn’t make sense now lol 

Also, Roen was Rem’s dog before he betrayed them. 

Midorima was Akashi’s right hand. But after they graduate, they weren’t that close anymore. 

But at the end, everyone fought the King of Vampire, Lord Nesta. 

Midorima joined the others to defeat the jabberwock. 

That’s the only similarities I found between them. 

Murasakibara Atsushi as Natsumezaka Shiki: 

Except Shiki’s sadistic and masochist attitude, I can see Murasakibara as Shiki. 

First of all, Shiki is a fallen angel. Or, he wished to be address like that. 

Murasakibara is a fairy in my eyes. He’s like the most innocent among them. 

Shiki likes to torture Roen, Rem’s dog. Murasakibara had once fought with Midorima, but they grew closer as I can see. 

But still, Shiki sometimes sulks because of them. 

Murasakibara pouting is also very tempting to see. 

Also, Murasakibara is the tallest, right? 

Shiki is the smallest. So, it’s perfect! 

BONUS — 

Kuroko Tetsuya as Tachibana Ritsuki/Heroine: 

WHY NOT. Don’t we all ship Kuroko to the Kiseki and Kagami.
