Rating Genshin Impact Character Designs (Pt. 1)

Hey y’all! I’ve been thinking of doing this for a really long time and I decided to finally stop being lazy and do it. So this is going to be a review of all the playable characters in Genshin Impact from a design perspective. I don’t really have any prerequisites to make this list worth anything (unless you count one year of a fashion/sewing class in high school lol) but hey idk, seems fun?

Gonna be super long (10 characters) so putting everything under the cut.

Disclaimer: I don’t actually hate any of these designs, nor do I consider my opinions “fixing” them, this is just for fun.

Character: Lumine

I have a lot of conflicting feelings about this design. The hair and basic build are fine, very generic but that’s unsurprising for any character that is working at least partially as a pseudo self-insert. The color scheme is also very bland - and is one of the reasons I originally thought that Aether was automatically Geo traveler and Lumine was Anemo traveler. I think that adding more colors would’ve been a good thing, but also would’ve required a revamp of the dress itself, so maybe not the most practical thing, even if I think the dress is a bit too busy. The biggest changes I would make would be to get rid of the fancy part of her stockings as well as the extra flow/ruffled back of the skirt, which is just a bit too much considering the top layer of the skirt is already quite detailed (in a very nice way) and that could’ve just been extended. I also have to admit that though the scarf is very impractical and showy, but it reminds me of a costume from a series I like so I actually like it a lot, although you could definitely term it unnecessary.

Rating: 7/10

Character: Aether

Okay ngl this character design kinda slaps. Firstly, I love that Aether has long hair, it’s a good contrast to Lumine’s cut (and contrast should be super important with characters that are siblings/parallels of one another) and idk long braids are kinda cool. I love that the outfit has distinctive colors, which give the character personality and keeps him from being washed out. The design is much more streamlined than Lumine’s, and although I’m not a huge fan of midrifts (a theme in this post I’m sorry) there’s not actually much I’d change in this design. Except maybe make the cape a scarf to better match with Lumine. This is definitely the superior design in terms of the siblings in my opinion and I think the lack of intricacy fits the image of “traveler” better. It’s not my favorite and there isn’t anything that really stands out in the design, but it’s really solid and I like it.

Rating: 9/10

Character: Albedo

This design has a lot of potential, but I think in the end it’s just a bit too busy (which will be a theme in this game haha). I like the hair - in general I’m glad Genshin isn’t scared to try a bunch of different lengths and styles on guys because if not everything would become painfully boring. I also like the clothes for the most part. The boots are especially sleek, and I like that despite being a Geo character they gave Albedo a bluer, darker color scheme. I think it fits with his mysterious sort of quietly menacing vibe (this man is Frankensteining something I know it). But it really starts to get a bit too much with the coat. I think he needed a coat, again it fits the character, he’s in the middle of a frozen tundra and he’s also a magic scientist man, he needs some sort of coat. But I think the chain and the strap across the front is a bit too much. If I were the designers I would’ve continued with a sleeker theme, make the sleeves longer, the gloves shorter, if you wanted some ornamentation maybe a pack of vials on his belt. Overall very good design, greater color scheme, too busy. Also can we appreciate his banner art? It’s so good I love it.

Character: Amber

Okay first I’m gonna say her card art is super cute. Love the pose, love the style. All gut. Now let me say that this outfit had potential but then it sorta... fell flat. I like the color scheme for the most part, except the white cause idk white is boring and in the game it looks kinda latexy, but I understand wanting three colors and black might be too close to brown. That being said, I hate stockings. Stockings are just the worst, they’re impractical, hard to put on, uncomfortable, should only be worn with dresses. No knight of Favonius needs stockings. Might I suggest pants or shorts? Or like cool pseudo armor plates like with Lumine. Also though I do like the jacket and the leather stomacher design, I think a bomber jacket might suit the character better, because idk they’re cool and they make me think of Amelia Earheart, although that’s such a culturally distinct thing I can’t blame them for not thinking that way. Again the jacket is still very cool, love the stomacher, and love the cuffs.. The belt is lovely and like I said love the embossed designs, but ultimately this design is too impractical, and too bland to get away with being impratical for me. So... yeah.

Character: Barbara

Barbara! Our fav crazy nun. First I’m gonna thank her for having an attack of pure magic then I’m gonna say I hate the color white apparently because I also didn’t like it here. I’m pretty sure she’s supposed to be a novice (could be wrong), so I’d flip the colors, have the accents be white and the main color navy. But idk that’s just me. Overall I quite like her design. It’s a pretty good balance between simple and detailed. I don’t even hate the stockings. I’d say the least good part is the top, the bow and the weird collar is just... ehh? but I don’t think getting rid of the collar would help though. I’d say ditch the bow, make the dress connect to the collar, keep the off the shoulders cold sleeves. I really like the ruffled part of the top skirt. Idk it’s the best part of the design. The hat makes her look like a nurse not a nun though. maybe make the hair ties for the ponytails little veils, might fit better. Overall mostly nitpicks, it’s a strong design.

Character: Beidou

Firstly I’d like to apologize to the Beidou I pulled before never using her (forgive me ily); next I’d like to admit I don’t love her design. I haven’t really harped on the lack of armor on these characters - because I’m not sure how I’d integrate armor into all them without making them bland af, no one wants people running around in full plate armor how tf you supposed to climb in that - but I still wouldn’t’ve put her in a leotard and boots only when she’s a canonical fighter, without even the armor accents on most of the other character. I know that traditional qipao would probably be terrible to fight in, so I’m not going to complain about them slitting it - I actually quite like it I think it’s cool and sleek and fits her vibe - but I will complain about them putting her in a leotard underneath. As someone who dances I can assure you no one in their right mind would want to fight in a leotard, which yes I know isn’t the point and I can’t blame them for not thinking that way. Anyways, I think leggings/stockings and tall boots are quite cool so that’s prolly what I’d do, streamlines the whole design too, gives it a sense of connectivity (idk I’m weird and I don’t look at this character often so yeah). I like the top of her design, although I’d prolly replace the fur on the cap with a large collar, sort of pirate-y or Navy-like. Also let me just say I love the hair and eye patch. Fits her reckless sort of character to hate her hair whipping around, and the eyepatch really sells the concept of her having fought for years. The hand guards didn’t need to be flared, but I don’t mind them being there. Especially since handling a Claymore would definitely rip up your hands if you didn’t have protection. Also the boots though impractical are very cool so... yeah.

Rating: 6/10

Character: Bennett

One of my main team and prolly the closest thing I currently have to a DPS I have conflicting opinions on Bennett’s design. I think it’s a pretty good design all things considered. His belt and all his packs would be busy if you didn’t know Bennett’s character, but considering he’s a wanna be adventurer, I think it works pretty well. Although I don’t know why his extra belt straps are so long... or even exist?? Idk kinda weird. His top is... ehh? I don’t really like it, I think partially because I don’t think Bennett would wear a midrift shirt like this (midrifts where there shouldn’t be midrifts or, as I like to call it, being MagiReco-d) and partially cause the color, though understandable in such a busy design, is kinda bland. I think that’s why the collar works instead of being too busy, we needed some color. If I had to changed the design I’d get rid of the midrift and get rid of those weird extra belt things. Also that one random dagger star thing on one side of his blue collar is just so weird and random and like why does it exist? But overall I like the design, and it doesn’t bug me when I’m playing with him. I think it’s a good example of how busyness can accurately portray a character. Well done.

Character: Chongyun

Another character who I own but have never played, though my friend has him on their main team and they look super cool. I’m not gonna lie I love this character’s design. Firstly the color palette is so good, the white feels like it works to offset all the blue hues - which I love that even the darkest parts of his design are blue not black - so it doesn’t feel bland or irritating, especially with the gold giving it a sense of luxury. I also like the choice to have a tunic that extends to the pants, I think having only white pants would be too bland - again white it a meh color for designs - so it really gives it some necessary details and color. I also like the jacket, again it gives the design a sense of detail while being simple enough not to feel like too much. Also I have no idea what the outfit would look like without the jacket and I have a feeling that answer would be Not Good, so... yeah. Some nitpicks; the left arm band thingie golden cuff is kinda too much and seems impractical and irritating. And... that’s it. I know the slippers are impractical, but I think they work, he is an exorcist not an adventurer after all. Overall, probably second favorite design in the game. Great job

Character: Diluc

Give Diluc a high ponytail, I’m begging you. Lol anyways personal preference aside (which is impossible this entire post is personal preference) I like this design. I think the color works and the whole outfit is a good reflection of Diluc’s character, closed off, luxurious while also a bit ragged and uncontrollable. Yeah. I like it. I do think the thing chain accessory is kinda random, and I don’t think there’s anything about the design that knocks me off my feet, but I do really love the design overall. Also the gloves, good gloves. Suggestions? High ponytailed Diluc. Nothing else. Also though he’s not in this post I like that this outfit is very streamlined and simple compared to Kaeya, it’s a good portrayal of their differing views and opinions through fashion. Because unlike with the traveller siblings I think these brothers have a dynamic where contrast is better than parallel.

Character: Diona

Okay so though I’ve never interacted with this character I skimmed the wiki and I love her backstory it’s hilarious. Also since I never interact with her I don’t have many opinions about her design except why does she only have one sock on? Honestly relatable moments. I think the extra ponytail is kinda weird and excessive considering the hat and I’d prolly make the hair orange to match the ears but overall very cute design. What do bartenders look like? Idk. Oh and also there are a bit too many colors roaming around, but I get it. Overall fairly generic but kinda cute. I still think midrifts are bad.

Rating: 7/10

And that’s it! I hope this didn’t come off as “lol these designs are gross and I’m superior and we should fix them” because no. No one should take any of these suggestions seriously. Except maybe the ponytail one lol. Anyways I hope at least one person likes this cause this took forever and I kinda burned out after a while. This letter will restate my DNWs, list my likes, give you a brief rundown of my canon preferences, and then dive into specific prompts for each of my requests.

I’ll warn you upfront that I tend to ramble, so feel free to skip prompts that don’t interest you and/or use ctrl+F to search for whatever it is you want to write for.

My requests are divided by fandom, and in the case of the Silm + Middle-earth Legendarium, by topic too, so hopefully that will be helpful for you! Also, my TAZ request is waaay down at the bottom, so if that’s what you’re here for, just go to the bottom of the page.

Preferences re: Canon:

LaCE compliance is always completely optional (except if you’re choosing a prompt that is specifically about LaCE, lol). If you do want to include it, that’s great, but if you just want the characters to fuck without having that be an issue, go for it. I love explorations of LaCE that take into account the exceptions, boundaries, definitions, etc; I also love takes that emphasize that they are Laws and Customs, not biological imperatives.

I’m not picky about my Amrod deaths. He can die at either Losgar or Sirion (or, hell, some other time/place if you make it interesting enough!), whatever works best for the story. I do like Lightly Toasted Amrod, aka he almost burns to death at Losgar but survives/gets rescued at the last minute.

Gil-galad theories are all very fun. Please don’t make him the son of Fingon and a wife; if he’s Fingon’s son, I want Maedhros to be involved at least a little bit (adoption or trans mpreg are both fine in this scenario). Otherwise, I don’t have a particular preference, though if it’s not really relevant I usually default to the son of Orodreth (who is in turn the son of Angrod). Also, I’ve requested “Origins of Gil-galad”; there’s more information on him in that section.

Honestly, when it comes to theories and headcanons, my rule of thumb is “convince me”! I’m down for whatever, for the most part, as long as you can justify it :)

The Hobbit (Book)

Adventuring Hobbits Before Bilbo: Who were they? Did they ever come back, or was Bilbo assumed dead because of precedent? Were they all Tooks, or did some other hobbits tag along on adventures, too? Suggested Character(s): Belladonna Took

Dragon Magic & Dragon-hunting: Talk to me about dragons! I’m interested in dragons & dwarves, especially in relation to the first time dwarves were driven from Erebor and into the North and the War of the Dwarves and Dragons. What kinds of dragons set their sights on the mountain? How old was Smaug when all that was happening; did he learn anything from the failures of his kin? Who were the dragon-hunting dwarves who fought in that war? Suggested Character(s): Smaug, Original Dwarf Character

Dwarven Craft and Magic: Enchanted weapons, enchanted armor, runes and spells...all so interesting! Borrowing from the movies a bit, did Kíli’s runestone from Dís have any magic power? What’s the deal with the Arkenstone’s thrall? How do elf and dwarf magics intersect when it comes to objects like Bilbo’s mithril coat? Suggested Character(s): Dís, Frerin, Thorin, Original Dwarf Character (perhaps a craftsdwarf?)

Dwarves and Gender: We need more dwarf women! And I’d love any takes on nonbinary dwarves and/or dwarf-specific genders. Were there female dwarves in the Company that Bilbo mistook for male dwarves? Are dwarven women really only a third of the population? If dwarf men and women are very similar in appearance, how do they differentiate between them, or do they differentiate at all? If you included something about dwarvish braiding styles indicating gender, class, marital status, I would be delighted. Suggested Character(s): Dís, Frerin, Thorin, Original Dwarf Character; in this case I’d prefer a focus on canon characters, but OCs interacting with them would be marvelous, especially people like Dís’ spouse.

The Black Arrow: Bard’s little pep talk to his arrow has always intrigued me. I’d love to see your take on the origins of the Black Arrow. Does it really come from Erebor, and if so, who made it? How did Bard and his forefathers come to acquire it? (I like the movie version that ties it into Girion’s attempt to kill Smaug, so feel free to incorporate that if you feel like it.) Is the arrow enchanted? (Perhaps that could be tied to the Dwarven Craft and Magic tag!) Suggested Character(s): Bard, Original Character from Dale, Original Dwarf Character

The Stone Giants & Were-worms: I don’t have many thoughts on these guys except “neat! tell me more!” I’m fascinated by the creatures Tolkien only gives us a passing mention of; if you feel like it, maybe you could combine these tags with some of the creatures in the LOTR tagset (crebain, cold drakes, Watcher in the Water, Mearas, Kine of Araw, etc...I didn’t sign up with all those tags, but it would be neat to hear about them anyway!)

The Lord of the Rings (Books)

Cold-drakes and Fire-drakes & Crebain & The Watcher in the Water: Like with the Stone Giants and the Were-worms, I just think they’re neat and I’d love to hear your take on their origins and how they affect the history of Middle-earth. Feel free to combine this with other creature-related requests. Suggested Character(s): Scatha

Ghosts and Hauntings: Barrow-wights? Nazgûl victims? Just your crotchety old hobbit neighbor who still holds a grudge about losing the biggest pumpkin contest despite having been dead for 20 years? There’s a lot of potential for stories here; maybe you could combine a ghost story with some other prompt to add a murder mystery or haunting plot to a relationship you’re exploring!

Dwarf-Elf Relations: I don’t believe All Dwarves and All Elves hated each other! We have famous elf-dwarf friendships across the ages, and really it was just the Sindar vs. the Broadbeams/Firebeards that had the feud. Still, Legolas (a Sinda) and Gimli (raised among Broadbeams and Firebeards in the Blue Mountains) are caught up in that, so their friendship is quite remarkable! I’d love interrogations of how that feud continued across centuries and discussions of what really went down in Menegroth, perhaps with one of the Durins having an elf friend at some point in the past that sheds light on how Legolas and Gimli can get along. (I am here for any and all Gimli and Legolas combinations; I love them as friends, I love them as boyfriends or husbands, I love them as queerplatonic partners, I love them as anything in between! Do whatever you’d like with them!) Suggested Character(s): Gimli, Legolas, Original Elf Character, Any of Durins 1-7

Elvish and Mannish settlements in post-Ring War Ithilien: How do Legolas and Faramir get along, both living in Ithilien after the war? What do Legolas’ people think about being neighbors with a bunch of Men? Faramir and Imrahil were Aragorn’s chief commanders after the war, and Legolas expressed admiration for Imrahil; I imagine Imrahil visited his nephew in Ithilien, so what are the interactions of those three like? I’d love to see an exploration of Silvan elves and their culture here, with Legolas leaning into his Silvan heritage and maybe some Silvan OCs who have spent their whole lives in Mirkwood up until now and have never met Men before now! Suggested Character(s): Faramir, Legolas, Imrahil, Original Elf Character

Relations between the Dúnedain and Rivendell: Talk to me about the Grey Company, or Elladan and Elrohir fighting alongside their distant kin, or Rangers taking breaks in Imladris, how the Rangers think of Aragorn who was raised among elves, etc. I’d love an outsider POV here, such as an OC observing the oddities of a canon character. Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Original Ranger of the North

The Glittering Caves of Aglarond: More Gimli and Legolas stuff - but with a focus on Gimli this time :) Gimli as a lord in his own right, Gimli who takes elves on tours of his dwarf-kingdom and weirds out his people (is it just Legolas, or does he take any Silvan elves with him, or like...his elvish in-laws??), Gimli as a craftsman... Or, alternatively, you could explore the caves before Gimli gets to work on them, what the Rohirrim thought of them and how they were created - by natural processes, or by magic, or a mixture of both? Did Aulë make them for the dwarves to find, perhaps? Suggested Character(s): Gimli, Legolas

The Hobbit (Movies)

Dragonsickness/Goldsickness: The parallel to mental illness in the movies was really interesting. I’d love to see lingering effects of the goldsickness on Thorin after the Battle (Everyone Lives AU, probably), or an AU where Fíli or Kíli inherit the throne of Erebor and are afflicted by it as well. Or, sticking to canon, how did Fíli and Kíli and the rest of the Company deal with Thorin falling into madness? Were the other dwarves affected by the thrall of the gold? Bard and Thranduil were observers of Thorin’s madness; what did they think of him? Did Thranduil remember Thrór under dragonsickness? Or, since movie!Thranduil is a far cry from book!Thranduil when it comes to going to war over jewels, was he affected by the dragonsickness even from a distance? Was Bard? Suggested Character(s): Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Bard the Bowman, Thranduil

Dwarves who "choose craft"/Aromantic-Spectrum and Asexual-Spectrum Dwarves: This is pulling more from the books than the movies, but I didn’t have enough nomination slots to include any book nominations, so it went here, lol. Anyway: as I’m sure you can tell from my tumblr url, I headcanon Fíli as aromantic, and I love seeing that in fanworks! It’s really wonderful that Tolkien mentioned that many dwarves choose their craft over marriage, and I’d love to see an exploration of that aspect of dwarvish culture, and how Fíli fits into it. It seems to be fairly common/accepted, but are there different cultural pressures around marriage for the crown prince? How does Fíli figure out he’s aromantic? If aro and ace dwarves are expected to be choosing a craft over romance and sex, what’s Fíli’s craft? Or does he not have one, and people judge him for that? The “choose craft” language I use is very much inspired by this post and the Neo-Khuzdul word “bijebtorva” :) Suggested Character(s): Fíli, Original Character(s)

Governance and Politics in Mirkwood: How did Thranduil and Oropher come to power in the Greenwood? I hate the “lowly Silvan elf” line from the movie; can you somehow justify that with worldbuilding, or show how it’s not accurate? Is Legolas half-Silvan like is implied in the LOTR books? Who are Thranduil’s advisors? Is Tauriel really the only one who dislikes and defies Thranduil’s isolationist policies? Is Mirkwood very patriarchal, and is Tauriel’s appointment to Captain of the Guard something she faced opposition or competition for? Are the Sindar elite colonizers, or did they integrate into Silvan society? How does the average Silvan elf feel about their king, or do they not even think about him? Suggested Character(s): Thranduil, Tauriel, Original Character(s)

Poetry and prophecy: Bard uncovers that tapestry that turns a song from the book into a somewhat ominous prophecy; there’s a lot of discussion of fate and signs from the thrush at the door to the last light of Durin’s Day; Thranduil has seen enough in his thousands of years to have had time to brush up against a prophecy or two. What do these three believe about fate and prophecy? Are any of them prophets in their own right? How does poetry/music lend power to prophecy? (Bonus points if you tie it back into the Ainulindalë...) Suggested Character(s): Bard the Bowman, Thorin, Thranduil

Poisons and antidotes: I love Kíli/Tauriel and the scene where she heals his wound...but the worldbuilding around morgul poison and athelas is a little murky. It’s a decent parallel to Frodo’s condition in the LOTR movies, but it’s confusing lore-wise. Can you make sense of it? If Tauriel is a warrior, where did she learn healing? Rebuilding Erebor & Relations between Dwarves + Elves + Men: (I’d prefer an Everyone Lives AU for this situation.) How do Thorin and his Company put Erebor back together again? What are the renovation projects like? How long does it take Dís and the rest of the Longbeards to arrive in Erebor and help out? How long does Dáin stay to help his cousin? I would love to see some politics both internally within the Longbeard dwarves and externally as they relate to Mirkwood and Dale. Smaug’s corpse is just lying in the Long Lake...how do the dwarves feel about their old enemy’s body so close by? Do some Men want to re-establish Lake-town, and demand help from the dwarves who flushed the dragon out of the mountain? Do the dwarves want to harvest Smaug’s corpse for resources? (He’s probably got gold and jewels stuck in his scales, and dragon-skin/scales is probably a good raw material for crafting things.) What’s the process of Bard becoming King of Dale? Does he face any opposition? I love the idea of Hilda Bianca challenging him for leadership, or maybe insisting on some kind of democracy/representation in Dale! And if she doesn’t get her way, maybe it’s her leading some people back to Esgaroth and founding a democracy there that would make the old Master roll in his watery grave... How do Bard and Thranduil and Thorin reconcile after the battle? Does Thorin pay up like he said he would? Does Tauriel hang around, or does she go somewhere else? Are any elves inspired by her, or is she a total outcast? If you choose to explore the Kíli/Tauriel relationship, how does that affect politics between Erebor and Mirkwood? Magic as a connection to the Music/the Song: Magic isn’t always the best-explained in Tolkien’s universe, but what we do know is the incredible power of the Music. How do the Maiar and Valar, who are not technically beings of Arda, interact with the world? How do elves and men (and dwarves! and orcs!) tap into the Song and manipulate it to their benefit (or detriment)? I have the headcanon that Elemmírë, the elf who sung the Aldudénië, is a priestess of Varda; what was the power of that mourning song, and how was it received by her patron Vala? Nature Spirits: These holes in Tolkien’s worldbuilding are fascinating to me. What role do nature spirits play? How many are there? I’m thinking particularly of river spirits, like the River-woman and Goldberry, but there are probably also mountain spirits and water spirits and-and-and... Are they Maiar? Lesser beings? What do the Maiar we know of think about them? Gandalf seems the kind to listen to them and learn their stories, but perhaps Melian sees them more as servants in protecting her realm... The Shadow-shapes in the hills above Cuiviénen: What were these shapes? Melkor’s prototypical monsters, Maiar who didn’t know how to interact with the Children, something else entirely? What did the original elves believe about them? Did they fear them, did they try to appease them, did they try to confront them? I headcanon that Elemmírë is an Unbegotten elf, so perhaps she lost friends to the Shadows, or thought she did. If the Shadows did take elves, was it out of malice or curiosity or a desire to protect them from whatever Melkor was planning? Suggested Character(s): Melkor, Elemmírë, Original Character(s)

The Void: Melkor spends a whole lot of time here. Does he have any company? Something or someone he makes to pass the time with? Do the Valar (like Manwë or Námo or Varda or Nienna) visit him there? What is the nature of the Void, is it pure emptiness or chaotic magic or a nightmare machine? Is Melkor being punished or is he being contained? And where are the boundaries of the Void? The Silmarillion: Elven Relationships

Note: This request deals with relationships, and while I’m open to pretty much anything, please keep in mind my DNWs. Exploring these topics using canon relationships is a safe bet; I adore Maedhros/Fingon so having a look at them through this lens would be amazing; I have Aredhel as a character request here, and I see her as aromantic (“to none was her heart’s love given”) so while showing her in a relationship is fine, I’d love it if you could take her lack of romantic feelings into account; if you have a question about another ship, you can check to see what I’ve written and/or send me anon message! Additionally, a lot of these talk about soul bonds, which I’m very interested in, but one of my DNWs is soulmates. To me the concepts are very different things; it’s the destiny and inevitability and universal assumption of romance that really squick me out about soulmates. Soul bonds, on the other hand, have an aspect of choice to them that I really dig. So, please don’t make characters Fated For One Another, but please do explore what joining souls is like!

Laws & Customs of the Eldar: Boy do I have a lot of feelings about LaCE—and I’m always intrigued by other people’s feelings, too! I’d love to see an exploration of how these laws and customs came to be, which parts of the rules around marriage and children and re-embodiment are social constructs and which are innate to the fëa and hröa, and/or relationships that defy the norms. If your take on the laws is hetero/cisnormative, how does that affect queer elves? If your take is free of bigotry, what are the flexibilities around queerness, including asexuality and aromanticism? Laws and customs and rules always have loopholes and exceptions, so what do elves who don’t fit into the expected relationship mold do about these norms? Arranged Marriages among the Eldar: Russingon arranged marriage AU?? Orrrr....Maedhros or Fingon are politically engaged to someone else, and they have to deal with the ramifications of that? (Please don’t have them actually go through with the marriage if you go that route; I’m not interested in a story with Fingon having a wife, even if she’s a beard.) If elves (usually) only love once, and by declaration of the Valar can only marry once (Finwë being the somewhat disastrous exception), how is an arranged marriage justified within the cultural emphasis on these bonds? Are they more like arranged romances, people pushing their children together in hopes that they’ll fall in love? Or is it a stricter rule about “you do what’s best for this family”? (Note: Bad/cruel parenting is one of my major DNWs, so if you’re going that route, please don’t make the parent uncaring or malicious. Stubborn and narrow-minded is fine, as is the genuine belief that this is what’s best for the child, but ideally they’ll learn from their mistakes or perhaps everything will be interrupted and derailed by Canon Events. Creation/Discovery of soul bonds: How do soul bonds work on a metaphysical level? Can they be broken? Do they have to be nurtured and maintained? What’s long-distance communication like? Heck, what’s short-distance communication like, is it like talking in your mind or sharing your feelings or more abstract than that? Can elves form soul bonds with mortals? And most importantly—how did elves figure out they could soul bond with one another?? I can imagine that would be quite a shock when they’re discovering sex and then suddenly they’re inside each other’s minds! Suggested Character(s): Any Unbegotten Elf Character(s)

Non-romantic/sexual soul bonds: I’m good with practically any relationship here. Explore sibling bonds, twin bonds, parent-child bonds, queerplatonic bonds, found family bonds, adoption bonds, the bond between a Vala and their Maia...any kind of soul bond that is familial or platonic or chosen without regard to romance! (Feel free to take a canon romantic relationship and turn it queerplatonic, I live for that shit!) How are these bonds formed outside of sex? What are the rituals and ceremonies around forming them? Is it a public or private thing? Are non-romantic soul bonds taken seriously, or are they seen as less important than marriage bonds? Since elven parents literally give part of their soul in the creation of the child, is that parent-child bond innate? Suggested Character(s): Aredhel, Any Unbegotten Elf Character(s)

Elven adoption: I nominated this with Kidnap Dads in mind (if you go that route I love fluff for them as well as more nuanced/complicated takes on the situation, but whatever you do don’t make M&M cruel, and please include Maedhros as a parental figure alongside Maglor)...but hey, it could work for Fingon (and Maedhros) adopting Gil-galad! What are traditions around elven adoption? Are there soul bonds created between the adoptive parents and children? Was adoption even a thing in Aman, or is it only practiced in Middle-earth? Did elves adopt mortals and vice versa? Is adoption extended to found family other than a parent-child situation? The Silmarillion: Noldorin Politics

Original Fëanorian follower(s) who turned on their lords at Sirion: Okay, this is a character tag, but I’m absolutely obsessed with this line: “For the sons of Fëanor that yet lived came down suddenly upon the exiles of Gondolin and the remnant of Doriath, and destroyed them. In that battle some of their people stood aside, and some few rebelled and were slain upon the other part aiding Elwing against their own lords (for such was the sorrow and confusion in the hearts of the Eldar in those days).” Who were these people who followed the Fëanorians into exile, into a Kinslaying, through the burning of the ships, through 30 years of Maglor as a king-regent incapable of treating with the Nolofinwëans, through the scattering of their lords and the harsh conditions of the North, through the Bragollach and the Nírnaeth and a “wild and woodland life” and the Second Kinslaying (where some of them went as far as to abandon children in the winter woods to die because they thought it was what their lord/s would want), through isolation and hatred from every other elven group, through the plan to attack a refugee camp—through ALL OF THAT, and THEN they turn on their lords at Sirion??? Why betray your lords NOW? And the people who DID keep following them after that (after kidnapping children!!!), what were they thinking?? — I firmly believe that Maedhros has many escapees from Angband in his service who are ride or die for him and whose morality was somewhat warped by Angband, but what about Maglor’s followers? Caranthir’s? Ambarussa’s? Even Celegorm and Curufin’s?? There’s just SO MUCH potential for story here, I’m dying to read about them!

Noldorin lines of succession: Was It Sexist Or Was It Not: The Eternal Question aka Why Didn’t Idril Become High Queen After Turgon? Also, what does “eldest of the house of Finwë, and not the least wise” even MEAN, Maedhros?? How did Gil-galad come to power? I find it hard to believe he became king immediately after Gondolin fell; was it a wartime power grab? A battlefield promotion? How did the kingship get established in the first place? Why was Finwë chosen to go with Oromë to Aman? Was Maglor ever really king, or did he only rule as a regent for the missing Maedhros? Suggested Character(s): Finwë, Gil-galad, Maglor

Origins of Gil-galad: I am always so interested in takes on Gil-galad’s parentage. My favorites are Russingon baby Gil (through trans mpreg or adoption, both are good) and secret peredhel Gil (probably an Aegnor/Andreth baby adopted by Orodreth), but I also love Finduilas Is Gil-galad and honestly, any situation is fascinating here—just convince me! A possible way to explore this is through Outsider POV; some noble or historian trying to figure out just what the heck is up with Gil-galad. His parentage being confusing in-canon is so fun!! Maglor's Kingship between Maedhros' capture and rescue: Was Maglor ever really king? Did he give up on Maedhros early on, or did he cling to the hope that he still lived? Did his brothers turn to him for support, or did they connive to take responsibility from him? The rift between the Noldor wasn’t healed until Maedhros’ rescue; did Maglor try to cooperate with Fingolfin, or did he keep his people isolated? Was he relieved when Maedhros came back and took responsibility, or was he resentful to lose his power? Dwarf-Elf relations in the First Age & Dwarf-kingdoms: Dwarf-friends!!! Yes!!! I love elves and dwarves being buds (or partners if you’d like to go that route!) <3 IIRC, Curufin learned Khuzdul, and I’m sure Celebrimbor did too; Caranthir was supposedly rude to the dwarves, but what if that’s just his (and their!) love language? How did relations between the Sindar and the dwarves sour over time? Maedhros was friends with Azaghâl; how did that relationship begin? How did Finrod’s contract with the dwarves blossom into a real friendship? Eöl was also buddies with the dwarves; did he ever bump into Curufin or Caranthir while at a trade festival or something? And the dwarf kingdoms of the First Age are fascinating on their own, too; what was the political structure like? Did the dwarves bring items from the other side of the mountains into Beleriand? How did the petty-dwarves get exiled? What happened to Nogrod and Belegost in the War of Wrath, and were they ever re-established after the sinking of Beleriand? Guilds and Noble Houses of Tirion: Give me a Tirion political drama! Finwë trying to appease his lords and craftseldar? The younger princes running amok and causing chaos in their elders’ carefully-laid plans and delicately balanced alliances? Roles and Responsibilities in the Noldorin Royal Family: There were oodles of princes in Valinor. What did they all do? How did they get the followers who came with them to Middle-earth? How did this change in Middle-earth when suddenly everyone was in danger and had more pressing needs? What is it like being a re-embodied royal in a society that’s adapted to life without you? War of Wrath: For a war that took so long and had such wide-reaching repercussions, we really don’t have very many details about this. It’s free real estate, basically! I have my favorite characters (Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond, Elros, Gil-galad...) that you could use to explore this time period, but literally anyone who’s alive at this point is fair game. And OCs! What do the Noldor and Vanyar (and Telerin sailors) feel about the War and interacting with the war-weary exiles and Sindar and Men of late-stage Beleriand? What kind of culture shock/culture clash is there? Were re-embodied exiles permitted to return to Middle-earth, or were they barred from going to war again? Trauma after the War of Wrath for elves and humans & Exiles adjusting to life in the Undying Lands post War of Wrath & Dealing with psychological trauma in Valinor: Trauma was commonplace in Beleriand, but not so much in Valinor. What’s it like for exiles who sail West to be in a society that doesn’t know how to support them? Are the Valar having to learn how to deal with the trauma of living elves super quickly, or are they reticent to change? How do the exiles interact with their re-embodied kin? What do the Vanyar and other Amanyar think of these elves who have been so deeply hurt? What kinds of treatises on psychology are penned by scholars with little to no previous experience? What is therapy like in Valinor? Do the exiles get together for support groups since no one else understands them? Or did the trauma of the Darkening and the First Kinslaying wake up the Amanyar and get their act together before then; are the exiles surprised by the structures already in place to support them? And what about Avari who have been dying steadily all this time from accidents and incidents in Middle-earth? If they’ve been re-embodied, how do they engage with the Eldar who have similar traumas? Afterlives: This is pretty vague, but I think it’s referring to the various kinds of afterlife. What are the Halls of Mandos like? What happens to spirits who don’t go to Mandos? Do Men pass through Mandos on the way to Beyond? What happens to Men? Are they reincarnated in the more traditional understanding of the word, do they go to some other realm similar to Arda, are they just endlessly partying it up with Eru? Do dwarves really go to the Halls, or is that just a superstition? And of course, what about orcs? Suggested Character(s): Námo

Fate of orc souls after death: Yeah, really, what about orcs? If the orcs were originally elves twisted into Morgoth’s servants, are their spirits still elven? Are they reborn as they once were, elven despite their life as an orc? What about orcs who are many generations removed from their elvish ancestors? Do they have fëar? Can orcs be rehabilitated? I refuse to accept that all orcs are inherently evil; but what does everyone believe in-universe? Suggested Character(s): Námo, Original Orc Character(s)

Foresight and Prophecy and Doom: I’m honestly not sure if this fanon or canon, but Finarfin and his line having foresight through Indis is a wonderful concept and I’d love an exploration of that. How accurate is foresight? Can fate be circumvented? Are prophecies like the Doom of the Noldor self-fulfilling, or are they warnings about possible futures, or are they curses upon people? Did the Avari choose to remain in Middle-earth partially because of their love for the stars, which were drowned out by the light of the Trees? How does Eärendil feel about being a star; does he feel blasphemous or holy? The Unseen Realm: This is the in-between world where Frodo goes when he wears the ring, the world that the Nazgûl in their half-life inhabit. Are Ainur able to slip into this realm at will? Were the Edain mostly autonomous or were they very much bound to their elven lords? Were there common elves who paid tribute to Edain lords? Fourth Age Tirion: What’s Tirion like with a bunch of dead people walking around living again, and a bunch of weird legends now imposing in daily life? Is the average elf even really aware of all the nonsense that happened in Middle-earth, or are they extremely unimpressed with King So-and-So of a square of land that’s now underwater trying to cut them in line at the coffee shop? Timekeeping between the Death of the Two Trees and the Rise of the Sun and Moon: Tolkien’s math drives me ABSOLUTELY INSANE. His timelines are contradictory, I get headaches just thinking about the length of elf pregnancy, what does aging mean for an immortal species, WHY ARE TREE YEARS LIKE THAT and WHAT IS A YÉN? Please try and make sense of this for me, I beg of thee. I’m especially interested in the time period between the Death of the Trees and the Rise of the Sun and Moon. Did the Noldor wander the Helcaraxë for 3 years or 30? How long was Maitimo in Angband? Did the Sindar even realize something was different? How did people start calculating Sun years? When was the calendar of the First Age adopted? Who did all this math? Is there an in-universe explanation for these contradictions? Do people fight over math? Do the Ainur experience time the same way the Children do? Did some Noldo genius come up with a timekeeping system that worked with the Moon, only for the Sun to come along and muck it up? Treatment of Angband's Escaped Thralls: Which kinds of escapees choose to go to Himring with Maedhros the Tall, and which choose to go to Gondolin and the House of the Hammer of Wrath? Was Rôg an escapee too? Can Maedhros really tell who’s been turned by the Enemy? Does Thingol have the right of it in turning away thralls from Doriath? (If he even does that, I’m now researching this and I’m not sure it’s actually canon...) What was it like for Maedhros and Gwindor to readjust to elven society? Did Elrond grow up surrounded by Fëanorian followers who escaped Angband, and is that where he learned healing? Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Elrond

In-universe authorial bias in historical texts: All of the Legendarium is a history, which means there’s bound to be unreliable narrators. Was Maeglin really as evil as the story says? Trade in Middle-earth: What was trade like in First Age Beleriand? What about Second Age trade between Númenor and the mainland? Was Ost-in-Edhil a trade hub? After Sauron returned and traveling became dangerous, what intrepid traders braved the wilds for the sake of goods and money? How was currency developed around the world? Orcs Surviving the Wars: Again, I don’t believe that all orcs are irredeemably, inherently evil. Would Elrond take a chance on rehabilitating an orc in Rivendell? What if orcs were more complicated all along, and it’s the histories that simplified them to cardboard-cutout villains? My only non-Tolkien request, oops. Don’t think I’m not as interested in this request, though; I’m the only one who nominated for it, so I picked my very favorite concepts and I’d love to see what you do with them!

Angus McDonald’s Grandfather: This guy’s name was lost to time, and he loves silverware, and he has a grandson, and that’s pretty much all we know about him. Was he involved in the Relic Wars somehow? Did his name get eaten by the Voidfish? I imagine he’s a rather eccentric fellow; how much of that did he pass on to Angus? Is he even real, or was Angus lying to Tres Horny Boys about his destination?

Any Wonderland Adventurer(s): I’d love to see what happens to the other people who go to Wonderland before our boys. Do they all die? How many get what they want and get out? Do any of them have weaker moral compasses than THB and agree to advertise for Edward and Lydia? What if Edward or Lydia fell in love with an adventurer and trapped them there? What kinds of things do people sacrifice to the Wheel? We know about the Escape Game and the Healing Game; what about the Recovery Game? How long has Wonderland been around? How has it evolved over time? What was it like before Edward and Lydia got ahold of the Animus Bell? How did they get ahold of it? (Personally I think Barry just gave it to them...but did he have to go through the trials first?)

Differences within species between the Two-Sunned World and Faerun: I love the fanon that Two-Sun elves are juuust a little different from Faerun elves...like Taako’s echolocation, for example. But what if this applies to the other species like gnomes and dwarves and even humans? How are the Seven Birds just a liiiitle off from everyone else around them? Also, Cat Elves. And the other Reclaimers weren’t officially disbanded right away; how did they feel about the new guys in town, and losing their jobs to these doofuses? The Relic Wars: There were wars about the Relics!!! Wars!! That everyone forgot!! Wars where people that THB knew died!! And then we never get into this in canon! It drives me nuts! APPEARANCE/PHYSICAL TRAITS

Height: 6’2”

Body type/build: He’s thin, lanky, and muscular. Think Julian but a little bit more toned muscle, less dorito and more hourglass and instead of a pancake butt, he thicc

Skin: He’s white, but not pale. He has no special birthmarks/scars or beauty marks. Just a gangly white boy who’s become a little bronzed from living in sunny Vesuvia.

Hair: He has light golden blonde hair (lighter than Lucio’s by quite a bit, but not platinum). On one side of his head his hair swoops over like Julian’s, but the other side is shaven save for 3 braids that run around to the back of his neck. (My friend @fantasmagorias drew Atlas perfectly, including his complex hairdo. It was like he literally jumped from my brain to hers. I’ll attach that at the bottom of this post!)

Eyes: He has bright white eyes. I strongly agree with the theory I heard that each character in the Arcana’s eyes match their patron Arcana. Atlas’ is the fool, so he has white eyes like Scout!

Distinguishing features: He has very defined cheekbones, a sharp jawline and what I can best describe as curious brows. He’s definitely got a fun, mischievous look to him. Even when his face is in its resting state, he looks like he’s smirking and always has an adventurous glint in his eyes. When he smiles you can’t help but smile too, as his smile is very bright and nearly always genuine.

Clothing: Atlas makes most of his own clothes, and if he isn’t wearing something handmade, he’s wearing something Asra or Nadia got him. He’s always dressed very funky and in bright colours, like orange, blue, purple, and green.

Default outfit - Tits out Vesuvia! He wears a loose white tunic with brassy buttons that clasp at the waist, leaving most of his chest exposed, and a blue and purple paisley patterned scarf that no one has seem him leave the shop without. Over his top, her wears a sleeveless cardigan that drapes just below his booty that is a deep, bright royal purple with bright orange and gold embroidery. He wears high waisted pants that were originally white, but are now a light tan/beige, decorated with darker beige markings and small white beads. Around his lower waist his shirt is kept shut (so that only his tiddies are showing and not his entire front because wow what a sin that would be) by a light green sash that was “artiscally” stained with light orange and blue markings. He wears tall tattered light brown boots with tassels/fringe on them.

Travelling outfit - He romances Muriel, so his travelling outfit includes a thick cloak that was gifted to him from Nadia and a colourful blue and purple paisley patterned scarf Asra gifted him. (The cloak looks exactly like Muriel’s except the fur is bright white and rather than being lined green it is lined the same colour of blue as his scarf). He wears the same silly, tattered brown boots he always does.

Masquerade outfit - Atlas wears a wolf mask at the masquerade (this plays both into the fact that Muriel’s familiar is a wolf and the fact that the fool is most commonly represented by/with a dog). His mask is white and glittery, adorned with pearls from the waters of Prakra. He wears a long, multi-layered, flowy, deep blue skirt with gems decorating the silky inner fabric of the skirt. It looks like the night sky when light reflects off of it and moves like calm water. His top is a loose white silk that covers his back and abdomen and tucks seamlessly into his skirt and is belted with a gold sash. His arms, shoulders and neck are adorned in gold, a pattern similar to that of Asra’s masquerade outfit’s gold accents, except the gold pattern travels all the way from his shoulders to his wrists, where it is clasped in place by thick gold wristicuffs that each have a single large pearl in the center. He wears a thick gold choker around his neck that looks exactly like the wrist cuffs except neck-sized (lol). When he attends the masquerade he has his makeup done by Natiqa, who opted for a simple look with dramatic gold eyeliner and some highlight.

PERSONALITY/INTERESTS

Personality: Atlas is very straightforward and not afraid to speak his mind, he is constantly making silly quips and jokes; he loves making others laugh. He has what I call a “hero complex”; essentially he loves protecting and saving people. Anyone he can’t save he blames himself for. He blames himself for both Morga and Khamgalai’s death, but because of his positive attitude and his habit of pushing anything negative deep down inside him and his need to not let anyone around him feel down, he doesn’t tell anyone.

He romances Muriel, and in his route he’s very loud and obnoxious. Muriel hated him at first, but slowly, because of Atlas’ high energy and positivity, Muriel came out of his shell quite a bit and grew to love Atlas.

But, Atlas is not always loud and high energy. He gets lost in his thoughts often and becomes quite serious, especially after being in a tough or scary situation, even though when he was in the situation, he was making jokes and laughing through his stress. (He very much so relieves his anxieties through comedy).

He very rarely gets angry, but when he does it’s terrifying. He becomes a raging inferno that nothing and no one can stop from raging on. This is because he pushes his self-hatred so far down that he’s an emotional bomb just waiting to go off.

Likes: Being a hero

Dislikes: Failure

Fears: Losing loved ones

Habits: He will throw himself headfirst into danger without thinking if he sees someone who needs help.

TRIVIA

I keep my ocs as canon as I possibly can, that’s why Atlas has no last name. He has no idea who his family is or where he’s from. The only thing he does know about his past is that he died of the plague and that he had a mysterious aunt who he’s pretty sure has died. Pretty much, anything Asra doesn’t know, Atlas doesn’t.

As far as bonus (lemon) 😏😏 material, Atlas is a vers switch. When he’s subbing he loves being tied up and edged to the point of tears leaking from his eyes. Like Asra, he very much so enjoys delayed gratification during sex. When he’s topping, he’s a soft domme and consistently checks to make sure his partner is doing okay. But he is not gentle. He likes to hear his partner scream, being vocal turns him on *so much.*

Smut 102: A tutorial on writing dialogue during sex

Hello all! I’m Pikapeppa (queenofkadara on AO3). I write a lot of smut – 68 scenes in 2018 – and I’m back with another post with advice on writing smut. (See here for my post on smut writing for beginners.)

Today’s topic is writing dialogue in smut: that is, writing conversations that take place during sex. I’ve had people comment before about how they enjoy the dialogue my characters have during their sex scenes, so I thought I’d write a little post about this.

Before we begin: every writer does things a little differently, and everyone has a way that works! This is what I do when I write dialogue during smut, so I am sharing in the hopes that it will be helpful to some aspiring writers out there. ❤️

The importance of dialogue during sex

Let me preface this by saying that I have written smut for 13 pairings to date, and the sex I write is pretty basic for the most part. I write primarily M/F pairings engaging in vaginal sex, oral sex and hand stuff, and I don’t write much in terms of kink aside from basic bondage and a little roleplay (and magic during sex, if we’re talking Dragon Age – Fen’Harel take me...). Given that the repertoire of sex acts I write is relatively limited, how do I keep it interesting?

We keep it interesting by keeping in mind that when reading and writing smut, it’s not just the sex per se that we’re interested in; it’s the characters who are having the sex that we’re interested in. This might sound obvious, but it’s crucial to remember that any sexual encounter involves two (or more!) characters who have their own distinct personalities, preferences, opinions, likes and dislikes. Sexual encounters are a great vehicle for exploring the relationship, and for learning more about who your characters are. No two pairings will have the same kind of sex because the social interactions between each pairing are unique, resulting in very different interactions during sex, even if the sexual acts or positions are the same.

To this end, what is one of the best ways to convey who your characters are? Conversations. You learn who a character is by seeing how they react and talk to the people around them, and this is just as true during sex as it is outside of the bedroom. In fact, sex is a great way to learn more about your characters, because the shedding of clothes and inhibitions lets you explore aspects of your characters’ personalities and relationships that your readers wouldn’t otherwise see. During sex, people show a different side of themselves: they can become less inhibited, bolder or more passive, more vulnerable, more awkward! – and all of these moods give you a way to explore different facets of your characters and their relationship.

Planning a conversation during a smut scene

The first step in writing any conversation is to know your characters. For the sake of staying focused, let’s assume that you have a good handle on your characters and what their sexual preferences would be.

Let’s say you’re planning to write a smut scene that’s intended to showcase some aspect of the couple’s relationship. Maybe this is where one or both characters confess they’re in love, or maybe it’s their first time and the sex they have will kind of set the tone for their relationship. For this kind of ‘character/relationship development sex’, I’ll actually write the dialogue before anything else. And when I’m writing important dialogue, I write it almost like a script with only the lines and stage directions, as shown below for Fenris and Rynne Hawke.

This is a helpful method when the dialogue is a central part of the sex scene. It lets you keep in mind what you want the characters to say, and it helps you to guide the direction of the scene.

Importantly, the dialogue does not have to be set in stone once you’ve planned it; it’s important to stay flexible and follow your characters’ lead, so the dialogue can absolutely change as you write the scene. For instance, for the scene outlined above, the sex ended up happening in the middle of the conversation instead of at the end, and I didn’t end up using the ‘sneaking away’ angle at the end of the planned dialogue, because my characters decided to go in a romantic/sappy direction instead of a saucy one. But having a script-style outline can help you remember the overarching narrative goal of the scene, and give you a direction for how the sex will play out.

Writing spontaneous, unplanned dialogue in a smut scene

Now let’s say you’re writing a smut scene that isn’t meant to showcase some major integral shift in the relationship or character development; for example, maybe it’s just some fluffy PWP for the hell of it, or a normal sex scene in the course of your fic. When this is the case, I don’t plot the dialogue as much, and instead I’ll just let it flow naturally as the scene plays itself out. For scenes like this, I’ll usually still have a scenario, a sex position, or even a prop that I want to build into the scene, and thus the dialogue that emerges will center around that.

Importantly, even in the case of some fluffy PWP, I’ll still be thinking deeply about who my characters are and what I want to show about their relationship. Very importantly, when I’m writing their dialogue, I’ll be keeping their voices and speech patterns in mind.

For example, with @schoute’s Cullen and Piper Lavellan, one particular preference that I wanted to incorporate was the fact that Piper hates how big her ears are, and that she doesn’t like people touching or looking at them. In my outline for the chapter, I had this note:

This idea about the ears, then, was what I wanted to stay central in the scene, even though I didn’t have any particular dialogue in mind. When this part of the smut scene arose and it was time to write the dialogue, I wrote it by balancing a number of things:

Piper’s preferences and personality: doesn’t like showing her vulnerability; doesn’t trust easily but she trusts Cullen.

Cullen’s personality: patient, kind, serious most of the time.

Piper’s speech patterns: modern, swears a lot, casual.

Cullen’s speech patterns and voice: formal, kind of old-fashioned; more sophisticated vocabulary; doesn’t use contractions very often; the only curse word he canonically uses is ‘blasted’.

The conversation that took place during this sex scene thus looked like this:

He kissed her ear, and Piper couldn’t help it. She winced and cringed slightly.

Cullen instantly pulled away. He stroked her neck with his thumb. “Is something wrong?” he asked worriedly.

Stupid Piper, she thought in annoyance. Stupid ears ruining things. But now that he was asking, she had no choice but to answer.

She sighed, then rolled her eyes and waved at her ear. “I don’t… my ears are dumb,” she said bluntly. “They’re big and stupid and I don’t really like people touching them or looking at them. Sorry I’m so awkward.” She dropped her eyes to her lap and picked at her braided bracelet.

Cullen was quiet for a moment. Then he tipped her chin up once more, and Piper was forced to look him in the eye.

His expression was stern, but his gaze was heated. “Piper, you… your ears are lovely,” he said.

She snorted inelegantly, but Cullen shook his head. “I am serious. I… Everything about you is lovely. I will not touch your ears if you don’t want me to, but you should know that I think they’re beautiful.” He released her chin and stroked her cheekbone. “Your ears and your scars, your hair, these tattoos that I haven’t seen before…” His fingers drifted over the delicate ink on her sternum and beneath her breasts, and Piper dragged in a tiny gasp of a breath at his gentle touch.

He lifted his hand back to her neck once more. “Piper, you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I count myself extremely fortunate that I have the privilege of looking at you.”

She swallowed hard. There was an inconvenient lump in her throat, and it was difficult to look him in the eye, but he was so gorgeous, and the words he’d said were just so…

She inhaled carefully, then met his eye. She reached up and grasped his wrist, and finally she said the words she’d been wanting to tell him all day long.

“I love you,” she said. “You know that, right?”

A huge, beautiful smile broke across his face. “I love you, too,” he said. Then he kissed her once more.

The point here is that dialogue during sex doesn’t always need to be planned out. I usually only “script” the really important conversations ahead of time. Otherwise, I’ll keep my characters and their voices in mind, and I’ll write the sex-related dialogue around some central idea/prop/body part or position/feeling.

“Fuck, yes!”: vocalizations and ‘chit-chat’ during sex

Even if you’re not planning for your characters to talk much during the sex scene, which is genuinely fine and necessary sometimes (e.g. silent sex while hiding somewhere illicit, ooh la la!), keep in mind that some vocalizations and verbal exchanges arise naturally during sex, and including them will thus help the sex scene feel more natural. By vocalizations and verbal exchanges, I mean things like:

Cursing: “Oh fuck!” “Fuck, yes!” “Maker’s breath.” “oh gods!” etc…

Directions: “harder!” “touch me!”

Begging: “please, I need you!”

Teasing: “Is that what you want?” “Ask me nicely.” “You like that?”

Moaning, groaning, grunting, growling, crying out, gasping… so many nice verbs. 😉

Even for these kinds of vocalizations, it’s important to remember your characters’ personalities, voices, and speech patterns when deciding what kinds of things might naturally come out of their mouths in the throes of sex. For example, for those of you who are Dragon Age-savvy, I wouldn’t write Cullen saying “fuck” when he climaxes (LOL CAN YOU IMAGINE), and I would write Fenris cursing in his native language (Tevene) if Hawke was stripteasing for him.

In sum: dialogue during sex can be the key thing that makes the sex scene special and unique for your pairing, even if the sex act itself is relatively tame. All conversations tell us who your characters are and what their relationship is like, and the special characteristics of a sex scene — lowered inhibitions, vulnerability, boldness etc — allow you to showcase parts of your characters that we wouldn’t normally see. Doing a quick and dirty “script” can help you to get that crucial dialogue out more easily; or if you’re keeping things more spontaneous, you can pick a position/prop/scenario and freeform your dialogue while keeping your characters’ voices and speech patterns at the front of your mind.

Sexuality: Demisexual, Polyamorous, Demiromantic

Notes on his Sexuality/Romantic Side: Jacques is categorized as a demisexual with strong homosexual or androsexual leanings. He is open to sexual activities but only once he has forged a strong enough emotional bond with the person that he will have sex with (Such as his partners P’shali and Swath for example), he simply prefers men in most cases. This also ties into him being Demiromantic as he has to have that strong emotional bond before he feels any such love/romantic attraction to a partner. (Thanks to @talechaser-ffxiv for helping me out on this one!)

Marital Status: Single

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral for the most part, he can sometimes delve into Chaotic Evil if situations come up that break him. He can also lean into just straight up neutral.

Canon Divergent: For the most part, I do my best to keep Jacques as best as I can leaning into the lore of the game. However, him being what he is (IE: he can turn into what is essentially a ‘primal’ of sorts) is more than just a bit lore breakery. This rarely comes up in RP unless the person that I am RPing with is comfortable with it obviously and it is something that I keep very well guarded. Overall I am a person who tries her best to keep things lore and canon friendly but I am very open to the ‘screw this’ option as well since myself and my IRL partner often times fall into that category with our RPs. Never be afraid to ask if I’m open or okay with something folks <3

Physical Appearance ––– –

You can find more detailed information about certain things on Jacques’ character page. Specifically his scales, horns, etc.

Hair: Jacques’ hair is actually extremely long, when he doesn’t have it up in the ponytail and braided it reaches down to just below the base of his tail. His hair is very silky and soft as well since he generally tends to put a lot of care into it. Color wise, Jacques’ hair is a very brilliant silver color which shimmers in the right lighting and has a slight iridescence to it. His hair also has very light aquamarine/teal (mako colored if you would) highlights in it though they are hard to truly notice.

Eyes: Jacques has very bright Aquamarine/Teal (Once again a ‘mako’ color if you would) eyes by default with a very bright Teal Limbal ring around them. However, because of events one of Jacques’ eyes has turned into that of a Great Wyrm to tie him into his dragon form. His left eye is his wyrm eye and it appears a lot like the eye of Hraesvelgr or Nidhogg in terms of looks with the colors ranging from Reds/Crimsons, Oranges, Purples and Blacks to tie it into his ties with Bahamut, Nidhogg and Midgardsormr. His right eye is his normal eye which is the Teal coloration mentioned previously.

Height: Jacques is a giant standing at a tall 7 foot 1 inches (The maximum height for Au Ra), the only things that are usually taller than him are Roegadyn’s and even then it’s not by much.

Build: Jacques is a very muscular and toned male Au Ra, he’s got broad shoulders and tends to have a slight ‘taper’ to his waistline, a sorta hour-glass look to it really but nothing to the extreme. His arms and legs are both extremely muscular due to constant battles and fighting on the front lines. Generally speaking he’s basically a very athletic build and his many years that he’s spent fighting show through either his choice in armor (Which is generally form fitting) or in his more 'casual’ attire which he doesn’t often go around in. Basically he’s a big, buff dragon man who can probably break anyone in two if they pissed him off enough.

Distinguishing Marks: The major things to note about Jacques would be that he has far more scales than your typical Au Ra. The entire lower half of his arms from the elbow down are covered in thick scales with plating along the backs of them (from the elbow down to the back of his hand basically) and the same is said for his lower legs which also have dragon like feet instead of normal humanoid feet. Jacques’ facial scales are mostly around his eyes with small ‘stripes’ on his cheeks, his entire back starting from the top of his neck is covered in scales with an alligator/crocodile like appearance to them (chutes if you would) and they wrap slightly around his sides. These scales carry all the way down to his tail which is longer than your typical Au Ra tail and it ends in a large flail/fin. Honestly a good idea of his appearance would be this piece that I recently did of him.

Common Accessories: While Jacques isn’t the sort to actually wear jewelry in recent days he has taken to wearing a singular ring on his left (our right) hand, the reasons behind this aren’t really known at the moment but it ties into his relationship with P'shali Talechaser and Swath Lodestone. Other than the ring on his hand he will sometimes wear 'earrings’ which will hang down from the base of his original horns, these tend to vary and depend on his current mood so to speak.

Additional Features: Basically looking at the image above for an example of what he looks like he has dragon like feet which have ‘toe beans’ (AKA Paw pads) on the bottom, more scales than your typical Au Ra. His tail is longer and has a long line of spines that run down the length of it as well as a fin like flail at the end. Three sets of horns and a large scar over his chest. Not shown is the more recent scarring around his Left Eye (Wyrm eye) due to taking a straight up gun blast to the face.

Profession: Sort of a Mercenary for ‘hire’ so to speak but otherwise he really doesn’t have a profession at this point.

Hobbies: Crafting housing items and general carpentry. He loves cooking and more specifically baking and making elaborate dinners. Fishing in his spare time is a big one as well, lastly he loves singing when he is alone.

Languages: Common, Draconic

Residence: Could be considered a Drifter, but has a house in The Mist with his partners Swath and P’shali

Birthplace: Rumored to have been in Ivalice (Potentially Rabanastre) but he doesn’t know for certain

Religion: For the most part Jacques doesn’t really have any sort of Religious beliefs nor does he really care too much about it.

Smoking Habit: Jacques is a very heavy smoker though he tends to try and keep his smoking to more private areas so not to disturb anyone around him. He’ll smoke a lot when he is stressed or simply having a bad day in general. It helps to not only calm him but to take his mind off of everything happening around him. Drugs: Nope, Jacques hates any sort of narcotic due to his past. He has good reason to not trust any such things and will avoid them. If he is pushed to try them he can easily lose his temper and lash out violently. Alcohol: While he doesn’t heavily drink, Jacques has been known to toss down a drink or two when in good company. He tends to however prefer actually drinking things like Teas over any sort of Alcoholic beverage.

Honestly, when it comes to Jacques I am open for anything really. I can’t really think of ‘hooks’ per-say so it’s often hard for me to think of situations or settings. I tend to be very open with my Role-play and I do not mind plotting things out, I’m pretty much an anything goes kind of person so long as it’s okay with both parties. Jacques’ RP’s can be either very fun and slice of life to dark and brutal depending on what anyone wants. So really, all anyone needs to do is ask and we can see about setting things up! Basically, I’m all for plotting out things and just going from there! Whatever works for my RP partners and the like, I’m pretty much okay with just about anything and everything lol doesn’t matter if it’s fluff/fun times or dark themed. I’m game!

The major things that I ask is that characters don’t know too much about Jacques (IE: his capability to transform into a dragon, the Wyrm Eye [Though this can come up in RP since he doesn’t cover it anymore] or just things that they shouldn’t know upon a first meeting), rumors and such are fine (Such as people whispering about the massive dragon that attacked Foundation during the events of the Vault or the dragon that killed Nidhogg, etc.) but characters knowing too much are a bit of a turn off. Jacques isn’t the sort to go out and just let all of this information out for the world to hear, he’s very secretive and keeps so much hidden just so that he feels ‘safe’.

On another note, while Jacques is with both P’shali and Swath their relationship is open meaning that he is very much okay with having more ‘mature’ moments with people whom might catch his interest. Any romantic relationships or anything that might come up from such things will be kept separate in their own ‘story’ so that things won’t get too confusing obviously.

July 20: Thoughts on The 100 2x04, Many Happy Returns

It’s literally been five months since I did one of these…

The wasteland was a pretty cool concept and I’m sad that they kinda pulled back on it later. Like, when characters can get from point A below the wasteland to point B above it without apparently passing through it at all, it makes it seem like the area is actually not that big after all. Is it, like, just NYC? And maybe the metro area? Also, again, as usual, floored by the costuming on this show. Amazing.

So Zoran is the first human Jaha meets on Earth. A kid and a mutated human.

Clarke is so intensely pragmatic. She legit doesn’t care if people once tried to kill her, as long as they aren’t trying to kill her now. I don’t really see this as forgiveness, but rather an ability to forget the past that isn’t useful to her. Also lol @Anya for saying Clarke is weak, like who broke who out of the Mountain hmmm?

“Everything is Grounder territory.” Murphy telling the truth. And even if some parts of the world aren’t Grounder territory, how the hell would Bellamy know?

Murphy, canonically a terrible runner. Rewatching these early eps just reinforces his glow up since then. (Not in terms of running, but in terms of, like, haircut.)

The wreckage of the Factory crash is so devastating, following the trail of bodies to the crash site. I still wish we’d found out what happened to everyone else. I guess we’re supposed to assume the rest of the stations exploded before impact? But still. I feel some bitterness.

This saving Mel story is entirely, 100% about keeping Bellamy, Finn, and Murphy stuck for most of an episode, allowing Octavia to find them, and then forcing Bellamy to come back to Camp Jaha rather than continue searching for Clarke—so he can, you know, run into Clarke. It’s pure filler. And imo not even very interesting filler since I’m not really like a rescue/adventure story person. I can’t even figure out how Mel ended up stranded along the side of the cliff. Was she climbing up and then got tired? Also, on a related note, at what point do they, Bellamy in particular, realize which station this is? Is it immediately obvious from the wreckage, or only from the identity of the survivor? Because this is Bellamy’s home.

All that time they were talking, Sterling was there in the background, doing whatever. Honestly though shame on Bellamy a little for letting Finn convince him not to save Mel.

Totally forgot they built an electric fence at Camp Jaha. Then, began work on a radio beacon.

I can’t even pay attention to the Clarke and Anya scenes because I’m too attracted to both of them. Less so in the mud. Which is 100% gratuitous given that uh, I don’t think the Mountain Men who almost never go outdoors and are currently wearing big ass gas masks on their faces can smell shit.

Bellamy and his adventure squad are such dumbasses. Huh, let’s tie this thin rope with a single knot around a stump and then just watch our friend use it to scale the side of a mountain. Nothing can go wrong there. I mean there are fucking four of them just standing around watching when they could be, uh, securing the rope? Anyway RIP Sterling, cause of death: idiocy. (Slash the narrative’s need to put Bellamy in the hero role at this point, and to up the ante on his heroism, and to waste some time.)

To be more fair, I think this is semi-important for Bellamy’s characterization, an early version of ‘save who we can save today.’ He’s at a sort of crossroads at this point, not really a leader anymore like in S1, but sort of a leader, and he needs to figure out what sort of leader he’ll be.

Monroe’s “Sterling was one of us” warms my heart because it speaks to my “the 100 were a distinct social group” theory, which I wish (again lol) had been more important to the show and for longer.

Murphy does fall in, though, pretty fast. After Monroe says the ‘one of us’ thing. Which is actually pretty impressive given that a few days ago he was blasting a hole in the dropship and running away with all their ammunition.

This must be such a trip for Jaha, like, he is aware that forest exists still, because of transmissions from the 100, but he’s in the middle of the fucking desert, and this is all he knows of Earth, whatsoever. Also, again, these sets are perfect, I love them so much.

How did the City of Light become a legend among the Grounders? It’s made from the Alie 1 chips…. Didn’t Becca, like, not like those? I’m assuming of course that literally any of this was ever thought out or ever made sense.

“I have no room for hate.” You know what I’m just gonna say it: I think this is true. This is really how Jaha lives the rest of his life. I think people forget since he wasn’t really himself for most of S3, and even in S2 his mission to the City of Light seemed kind of nutty (and boring). But “I have no room for hate” both describes him pretty well, and is rather a lovely thing about him. If only he hadn’t been so obsessed with the COL, tbh. Searching for it was a bad idea from the very beginning and it was also, I think, a rather cowardly idea.

I forgot that this was where the concept of radiation disfigurement came in and was explained. Is that really how it works? Like random mutations, even generations after the event, from non-mutated parents? Lol I have no idea. That said, Sienna kind of looks like she has some scarring on her face, too.

Here is Jaha finding someone who left her people for her son, whereas he sacrificed his son for his people. Does this also change his mind on things going forward? Connect to his insistence on the COL, at the expense of a chunk of his people?

I miss this thing where characters knew other characters even though we’d never seen them interact before, because, like, a history exists and then the show acknowledges it. That was fun.

I shipped Raven/Wick and I don’t regret it, even though fandom’s toxicity basically killed it for me in a lot of ways. They had a good rapport. More importantly, he might literally be the only man to not take shit from Raven and to actually be brave enough to challenge her.

Engineering is such a damn good set.

This is a weird episode because our two mains have pretty much the least important, or at least least-interesting, story lines. They’re basically just being moved into position to reunite at the end of the ep, and that’s it.

Clarke: “I just need something sharp and sterile [to remove the tracker from your arm].” Anya: bites it out with her teeth.

Why do they bother putting trackers on the Grounders? Do they escape often?

Murphy’s not only helping with the rescue mission, he’s at the head of the line.

Bellamy’s legs appreciation.

Murphy: “Don’t you worry, Bellamy, I won’t drop you.” I mean…you did once try to hang him. But by-gones I guess. I do believe at heart Murphy just wants to be part of the crew.

I think the Raven and Wick scenes are my favorites of this episode. I have two uninjured legs and I wouldn’t climb that thing; Raven is a brave bitch. And when she has to give up and come down, probably the saddest moment of the ep, along with finding Factory station. Some of this is relevant to my big bang.

After literally all this, Finn’s still like ‘Bellamy, just drop that rando’ lol. No, bitch, don’t do this half-assed. Stop being a wimp and pull them both up.

Before it’s revealed that the horn is Octavia, this really does look like Bellamy and the No Good Very Bad Day lol: first Factory is found destroyed, then Sterling dies, then you almost die when your fake rope breaks, then someone starts shooting arrows at you, then acid fog rolls in, like, what now universe??

I guess another purpose of this story line, being fair again, is that Murphy and Bellamy are now officially friends again. Like Murphy has proven himself completely trustworthy as of that little nod between them.

“She blew the horn” is s obviously ADR to explain what exactly is happening here. Which is helpful, even though she’s clearly carrying the horn.

Blake sibling reunion!

“Three mechanics made it to the ground.” I mean… you’d think it would be more than that… what with the entirety of Mecha making it. Or was that station mostly casualties? I don’t know, this still doesn’t make sense to me, how they split up people between stations. Season 2 implied it was random, Season 3 implied it was by home station.

“Your leg’s messed up and that blows. Figure out a way to work around it.” Legit question: is there anyone else who would have said that to her?

I really, truly miss Wick tbh. One of the few characters with a sense of humor. (And yet again: he was good for Raven.)

They’re really playing fast and loose with the rules about language in this verse huh? Warriors speak English, no everyone speaks English, no English is for friends only I guess?

Jaha just wants to be a dad. Like, do I think he was a good parent… I dunno. Is he a better parent than anyone else on this show? At this point I would have to say yes. (No, Clarke does not count as a “parent” jfc.)

It’s been such a freaking long time since I watched this, I can’t remember if Octavia had braids in the last ep or not, like how long she’s had them. And it’s really bugging me, because someone else must have put them in, and I’m trying to figure out who that might be.

Also, where did she get the horn? I guess the implication is it was Lincoln’s… I can’t really remember. Wouldn’t it still have been on his person when he was captured?

Octavia went off the rails but at this point I’m still very fond of her.

The map Finn gives Bellamy lists ‘statue’ (Lincoln Memorial?), ‘twin trees’ (???), ‘Ark’ (Alpha Station??), and ‘amusement park’ AND amusement park is very close to Ark so my question is why didn’t they use that amusement park for something interesting??

Bellamy knows he shouldn’t let Finn go off alone but then, what can he do? Finn never really adhered to his authority. And I don’t think he feels like he can flex that right now, like it’s sufficiently established in this new order.

But he does arm Murphy. Which says a lot about how much he has decided to trust him, but also how little he trusts Finn. I forgot about this split in the character groups, though I should have remembered it, since of course this leads directly to the massacre.

“Parting, such sweet sorrow, right?” is an interesting quote from a kid who can’t spell ‘die.’

Aw, Clarke goes back to the dropship. I forgot about that. But then of course she doesn’t realize… anything. She doesn’t know the Ark is down, she doesn’t know what happened to the few of her friends who were on the outside. And her face when she sees the message to her, and only her name is still visible…

Blah blah blah fight sequence.

Creepy skeleton parts on the ground.

I think this could have been the start of an Anya/Clarke friendship of some sort: Clarke earns her respect by fighting well, Clarke’s people protect Anya, the alliance forms… too bad they had to kill her.

And Clarke figures out where Alpha is based on Raven and Wick’s balloon.

“We fell from Earth in a football stadium. I think they already know we’re here.”

BUT the balloon is also what sets off Byrne, and gets her so worried about Grounders she authorizes the ‘shoot on sight’ command that kills Anya and almost Clarke. On the one hand, this is a nicely wrought story line. On the other hand, they shouldn’t have killed Anya, so. A wash.

Was Byrne’s worry about the balloon warranted though? I can’t decide.

Zoran, such a kind soul.

How can there possibly be a bounty on Sky People (side note: Jaha’s reaction to that name like ‘huh well I guess that is what we are’) that people all the way out in the dead zone would know about? Like… they’ve been on Earth for like a month. And the war has only been going on for part of that time, arguably. If it even is a war.

Trent Lane voice: Betrayal, yeah, stab in the back, betrayal…

Too bad “To survive, we do what we must” didn’t end up in like the fandom lexicon. It’s a pretty good variant on the theme. Plus Jaha’s just so… like he’s been fucked over but he can’t even be mad, because he gets that she’s doing it for her son and he wishes he had that chance. Watching his scenes again, I really feel like he was underrated and I miss him a lot.

I wonder what happened to Zoran and family. Were they absorbed into the hive? More generally, what happened to people seeking the CoL before ALIE could get it properly running with Jaha’s help? Did they all just… die in the desert?

Alpha Station at night is so beautiful.

And Clarke is so happy.

And this is SUCH A SETUP FOR CLARKE AND ANYA TO BE FRIENDS OMG, Anya should have brokered peace with Lexa, there was such an obvious role for her… Her death was 100% random attempt at shock, this show’s #1 worst quality, which is saying a lot.

I mean shot in the back while she’s walking away these Sky Guards are incompetent.

RIP Anya.

I really thought the Bellarke reunion was in this ep for some reason. But then I also knew Anya died right at the end—for more Shock Value ofc—so I don’t even know. I remember the scenes but nothing of their order I guess.

Stealing medicine for a family member - there’s pretty much nothing I wouldn’t do for them.

No - I definitely would have kept it on. They all deserved a chance.

A half moon. I’m obsessed with them. Although I’d probably tell a boy like Finn not to bother, lol.

Illian. I liked him.

When I look back on the seasons, I don’t mind him at all. I think he had good intentions and even though he acted a little rash at times, he meant well. I could always see his side. But when I think of him now, I automatically think ‘asshole’ because he normally is one in everyone’s fics, lol.

10. Be honest. How willing would you have been to take the chip without knowing all the horrible things it does?

I would never have taken it. I struggle to take painkillers because I feel like ‘I need to battle it myself’ even if it’s just a headache. I don’t like putting anything artificial like that in my body.

11. What character do you relate to most?

Clarke.

12. What character do you like the least?

I honestly don’t know? I like them all. I guess things would be easier for my ship if Echo wasn’t in that exact picture but her as a character? Adore her.

13. Describe your delinquent outfit. (Would you wear something like Murphy’s jacket with the spikey red shoulder patch or have a trademark like Jasper’s goggles? Be creative, yet practical)

Combat boots, the pants Raven always wears, Bellamy’s ark issued guard jacket and just a long sleeve t-shirt underneath.

Something involving caring for people, or a teacher.

Probably not. I’m fine with blood, not so much with stretching skin.

I guess Madi would be pretty good, considering Clarke raised her.

I have no idea. I’ve never done drugs so I can’t even imagine.

Bellamy. She needed to be helped, not outcast or killed.

Jake Griffin seems like a good man, from what we knew of him.

Kane’s, 100%. Saying that, it’s easy to say that knowing the whole picture. Bellamy only knew what was happening in Arkadia, he didn’t have the opinion of the Grounders that we did and he didn’t see the things we seen.

22. Mount Weather had a lot of modern commodities. (example: Maya’s Ipod) What is the one thing you would snatch while there?

Real books and her iPod. For sure.

23. What would your Grounder tattoos look like? Hairstyle? War paint?

Little symbols, just like I have in real life. Hairstyle - loved Octavia’s look in season 3 with pieces braided and pulled back. No war paint.

24. Favorite quote?

Ooh, hard one. I LOVE the entire ‘I got you for that’ scene. Melts me.

25. If all of the characters were in the Hunger Games, who would have the best shot at winning?

Octavia for sure.

Least favourite ship: kabby. Like, they’re fine together. I just don’t care that much about them?

Favourite canon: that isn’t Bellarke, probably Memori.

Favourite non canon: going to contradict myself with the last point and say Murven. I love the thoughts of them being together just as much as I love Memori.

27. A song that should be included in the next season? If there had to be another guest star like Shawn Mendes on the show, who would you want to make a cameo?

Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Lost on You’ or ANY of his songs would be perfect. As for a cameo appearance, maybe Landon Austin?

I’d definitely bond with Bellamy and Raven. Obviously Harper and Monty. Think it would take some time to warm up to Echo because I’d have to forgive her past mistakes and let her open up more.

They’re one of my main ships in the fandom honestly, but since they’re sorta hard to draw for me I rarely end up drawing them? I do still love them with all my heart tho! Sorry this took me an age to answer - I have answered this question a while back, I think it might be in my art tips tag! But to go through it fast, my process is something like

find a line or an exchange I want to deliver, or a topic I want discussed (usually happens randomly as I’m doing other things)

spend a million years just staring at a wall or at my ceiling or anything else as I build a whole scene in my mind to have the lines or topic take the form of an actual comic (might take two minutes, might take a month)

draw a rough sketch of the whole comic - I do this with all panels (and pages, when I separate a comic in pages) on the same canvas, so that I can look at the whole scene all together and get a good sense of the general flow of the storytelling. This process includes cutting panels, moving panels around, reshaping panels, trying different poses and angles for the same panels to find the right one, writing and deleting and re-writing lines till I’m sure the wording is what I’m going for*

line the panels - I mean the actual panels, the straight lines delimitating the panel, I line them all first and put them on a separate layer

line the people!! All the characters in every panel are lined in this stage

line the backgrounds! In case there are backgrounds and the comic is meant to stay in black and white, if not then color the backgrounds! (I always start coloring from the backgrounds cause they’re the boring parts and if I leave them for last I never do them ever #rip)

in case of black and white comics, we fill in flat, gray-scale colors at this point (or, as I’ve lately started doing, I only put down shadows and leave it at that). If it’s in colors, we color the people!

Write down the dialogue!! *at this point we change a lot of the dialogue again because enough time has passed since I sketched it that I changed my mind on everything, don’t be like me

you’re done!

All of it is done on one single canvas, unless it’s a comic with separate paneled pages in which case they’re all done on their own canvas but still drawn all together. That’s about it, hope it was at least a little bit useful!

How I feel about this character: adam parrish is the light of my life and i would die for him and he’s my favorite character (not even in this series, just In General). i really love him beyond words, i love the way he’s always striving for something more, i love that he’s alternately distant and empathetic and snarky and perceptive and contemptuous and ruthless and affectionate and needy, i love his determination and i love that he wants better for himself than what he was given, i love that despite wanting to be Unknowable and a One Man Army he needs other people on a fundamental level and despite wanting to be normal (for a given rich-aglionby-boy definition of normal) he fell in love with ronan lynch, i love that he’s at once the magician and (imo) the most deeply human character in the series, i love that he saved himself and wanted to save others as soon as he realized that. I LOVE HIM. he is so quiet and still and he kept thinking he came from shame and dust but he’s so alive and wonderful and real and i’m genuinely so struck by his story every time i think about it. adam parrish is singlehandedly responsible for my level of investment in this series tbh.

My unpopular opinion about this character: idk lmao maybe that adam parrish is better than everyone else. don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but it shouldn’t be.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:i wish canon had given even the tiniest measure of attention to his partial deafness. it’s something that would obviously have affected him a lot but it basically goes totally unmentioned through most of the series and that’s annoying. i think it should have been shown to have a clear effect on his life – as much as (and paralleling) the cabeswater bargain, even, as both adam moving out of his home and adam making the sacrifice were huge decisions/turning points in his life that happened on the same day and had physical + mental consequences. also i really wonder why ronan didn’t just like… dream him a magical hearing aid or something but idk

a head cannon fact:so adam is bi and he figures it out pretty early on (though in the beginning there’s still that question of ‘am i attracted to this snazzy rich male magazine model or do i just want to be him’) and then he just accepts it as like, a fact about himself and doesn’t really think of it as a good or bad thing. in general his sexuality isn’t a super big deal to him bc he has more pressing things to worry about, and he does think about it sometimes but only really reflects on it later, after he gets together with ronan and they finally talk about their sexuality (which they definitely do at some point, especially since accepting it was such a huge part of ronan’s character growth). i’m not saying he couldn’t have some internalized bullshit about it but imo that would be more related to wanting to be the default Typical Rich Heterosexual Man in a Business Suit than being ashamed of liking boys in itself. i like the idea of adam knowing he’s bi without having to go through any particular angst about it, he already has enough of that.

and speaking of which (to answer one of the questions above again), i also wish that in canon adam’s bisexuality had been more clearly stated. tbh in my Ideal Fix-It of the series we would have known (or at least been able to extrapolate from clear evidence) that adam was bi by the end of trb but whatever lol

my gender bend: everyone is a girl and ava parrish meets blue sargent before aglionby bc they’re both waitresses at nino’s (replacing the factory job, though she still fixes cars at boyd’s). they become best friends and talk shit about raven girls together, even after ava becomes one. possibly they try to date for a while but they break up soon and amicably, before ava goes to aglionby, so there’s no adam(ava)-blue-gansey love triangle involved at all bc that shit is just tiring. idk how this affects everything else i just want a wholesome adam(ava)/blue friendship free of pointless drama :’) also blue is a lesbian and she and ronan eventually bond over this. ronan notices ava early on whenever gansey & co go to nino’s and develops this vague distant crush on her but ava doesn’t notice ronan (maybe?) and then once ava transfers to aglionby ronan has an entire crisis about it.

anyway in my head ava has double braids and freckles and she’s as still and elegant as ever and ronan can’t stop staring at her hands (so everything is the same lol). one thing i guess is that she hates makeup and can’t stand the feeling of it on her face – she can’t really afford it anyway but ronan lends her some of her dream makeup for the dc trip and she’s not used to it and spends the whole time feeling painted-on and wrong, and it adds to the frustration and the dissociation and cabeswater’s tugging that builds up until everything comes crashing down. this is 100% just me projecting bc i despise makeup and cant even speak normally with lipstick on and i lowkey have a complex about it lmfao she loves seeing ronan’s makeup get all mussed up (from kissing :D) though, and she likes the way ronan wears hers – it’s a statement just like the shaved head and tattoo, not to look pretty or fit a standard, but like war paint, like art, screaming out for the world’s attention.

Of course! I love every thing Evie+The Sea Three ;). Here you are. A few(more than a few really, I was starting to think this was gonna turn into a story lol.

It’s a few months after the Sea Three arrives in Auradon that Harry asks Evie out. Theirs was an interesting dance. Harry liked to tease and aggravate her as he tried to pursue her. Evie played with sweet laced venom and teasing of her own. His charm won out in the end.

Their first date is awkward, Gil and Uma insisting on tagging along. As dating wasn’t much of a thing on the Isle, it was always more of a group thing anyway. Evie tried to tell them dating was different here in Auradon and Harry was more than happy with the idea of having alone time with her.

Uma wasn’t having it. She was going or Harry wasn’t allowed to. Harry knew better than to try and threaten his captain. Evie wasn’t the least bit happy. She tried to deter the other girl from going but Uma’s word was final and Evie knew better than to try and poke an aggravated bear. She took it in stride and allowed it. This once at least.

While awkward, the first date wasn’t exactly terrible. Evie could tell Uma and Gil were using the date as a way to make sure her intentions were pure. It almost made her giggle. The two pirates trying to protect their notoriously mad friend from a kind-hearted princess

When the date ended, Uma assured Harry she’d make sure the princess was returned safely to her room. Harry frowned, disappointed at the prospect of no good night kiss. Evie expected the calm ‘you hurt him and I take your heart, princess’ that Uma declares when they finally stopped in front of Evie’s dorm room.

After the first, all dates that followed were thankfully just Evie and Harry. Uma and Gil agreeing that the princess may do Harry some good. Evie learned quickly that while they weren’t joining them for anymore dates, she was still fully expected to hang with them in some way.

Things weren’t perfect given the history between the two groups, but Harry and Evie dating certainly helped with building a bridge to amend things.

Gil offered to model some of her male designs, an offer she gladly accepted. The burly teen had a certain eye for fashion it seemed. He offered little suggestions here and there that she considered and often incorporated into the design.

He takes a big interest in the fashion empire she’s built herself and asks if there is anything else he can help her with. She thinks about it and wonders if he has any interest in sewing. Ever eager to please, he nods. Evie shows him how to sew. It’s a bit slow at first, his large hands making it a bit difficult for him. He pricks his fingers so many times, they are practically covered in bandages.

While he won’t be creating anything elaborate like dresses or suits, Gil becomes a great repairman under Evie’s watchful eye. She finds herself with more free time now that Gil’s taken to fixing up any tear or stain that someone brings in. If Gil isn’t fixing up something for her, he’s sitting next to Dizzy at her little station helping her with all sort of accessories.

Evie learns that Gil is really good with puzzles. The burly teen completing the 5000 piece puzzle she had been working on in less than an hour. Amazed she gives him another one, this time 6000 pieces. He’s done in no time at all, a large grin on his face as he shows her the finished project. They take to doing puzzle nights, normally a Thursday night. She tries to get him to tell her his secret but even he’s not sure. He’s always loved puzzles. While she’s not the best, she enjoys them as well. Gil doesn’t mind having to slow his pace so that Evie can help as they work on their latest project.

Uma is a little less inclined to spend time with Evie. She was never one for fashion or anything of the like, always preferring a sword to the glitz and glamour(not that there was much of it back on the Isle anyway).

One day Evie notes the smell radiating from shorter teen. Uma bitterly tells her of the day her friendship with Mal took its turn for the worst. Evie smiles sadly, only having heard bits and pieces of the tale and never once hearing it from Mal directly.

She reached for Uma’s hair, only touching it once the other girl gave her permission. “I can fix this.” Uma looks unconvinced, but she gives a small nod. Evie smiles and was off in flash. A few weeks later Evie bounds into the room the trio commonly occupy with two bottles in her hands and little Dizzy at her heels. She pushes the boys out of the room and drags Uma to the bathroom. Together they work to remove Uma’s braids, applying the concoction in the bottles to every inch of the beautiful teal hair.

It takes hours to re-braid it when they are done, but it’s all worth it when Uma gives Evie a genuine smile. The rotten shrimp smell is gone. When questioned on how she did it after Uma’s tried everything she could think of, Evie just smiled enigmatically.

She knows they have some difficulties with some of their Auradon courses, Uma less than Gil and Harry. Evie helps Uma to tutor the boys even dragging Carlos on some nights to help as well.

When Uma finds out that Evie still hasn’t learned how to swim and that Harry hasn’t bothered to teach her, she takes matters into her own hands. They have a girls day, just the two of them. Uma takes Evie to the Enchanted Lake. She would have preferred the beach but considering Evie was a first time swimmer, Uma felt the waves would be too much.

Though afraid at first (their friendship is still just at its beginnings and Evie has that little voice in the back of her head that worries Uma wants to drown her) Evie takes to swimming pretty well. She’s not graceful, but she can float and no longer splashes around as though she were going to drown

Harry complains that Gil and Uma get to see her more than he does now. He teasingly states he regrets allowing them to hang out with her since they seemed to want to steal her away from him and keep her for themselves. Evie knows he doesn’t mean a word of it and is actually pretty damn happy that they approve of her enough to accept her as one of their own.

Ignis isn’t “particularly keen” on make-up.

She MASTERS make-up both on herself and others, though.

She’s learned because it’s etiquette/formality, not out of personal liking.

She’s too busy to “pretty up” herself, but still shows herself “presentable” (”presentable” = she’s looking super formal and good).

Basically like Normal Ignis attends his looks, lol.

Lady Ignis does, however, like to shadow her eyelids in very subtle colors and lipstick.

That thing girls put on your lashes to make them darker, thicker and longer?

Thanks, no.

Lady Ignis says that the most terrible, stupid invention is that eyelash curler thing.

“Look at it, it looks like an ancient Niflheim torture tool. Why would you put it to your eye and let it pull at your lashes? Dear gods, no, goodbye.”

Also hates to see girls using spoons on her lashes. It makes her anxious.

“How can someone put such things so close to something as sensitive as the eyes?”

Lady Ignis thinks that curling your lashes day by day will eventually leave you with no lashes by when you’re 40.

She prefers natural looks.

…BUT she also works in royalty, so she’s uncomfortable thinking her commoner origins are too noticeable in her features and that’s why she likes subtle dark eyeshadow and subtle lipstick.

Fem Ignis, you’re beautiful as you are, don’t worry :’)

Fem! Ignis isn’t particularly keen on casual skirts, either.

She’s wearing dresses to formal parties/events, but daily basis it’s either knee-high skirts or pants for her suits and she’s fine on it. Casual skirts? Not much her style.

Truth is, she feels a bit shy about it.

She thinks her legs are a bit too long and skinny and feels stupid showing them, even though they look fine (and pretty strong, according to Gladio).

Lady Scientia is the master of handling menstrual cramps.

They make her achy and a bit more moody than usual, but it’s not so notorious; she has mastered hiding that (just like sickness, sadness, like our normal Ignis).

Lady Ignis always carries a pill for the cramps and a sanitary pad; sometimes it’s just in case the period arrives before her scheduled time, or to aid other girls in the Citadel/school.

She is, however, more sensitive than usual both physically and emotionally, but tries not to show it.

It’s quite a struggle, the poor thing. :’(

Once, she tried to keep up training but ended up down on her knees, curling, because everything hurt too much.

Cor the Adorable carried her to a mat and let her rest. Took her home afterwards.

“If the cramps get too bad, it’s okay to call in sick, kid. Nobody’s judging you. Stop worrying. It’s natural that you feel bad. You can’t help it.”

A few times, Ignis DOES call in sick, but only after that convo with Cor.

Speaking of period, Ignis always makes unnecessary (TOTALLLY necessary, according to her) mathematical counts to mark in the calendary which day, which precise day, at which HOUR she’s having the next period.

She likes to schedule everything, be prepared.

“I’m not one of ambiguity.”

When 16 y.o. Ignis started working-out, she also started wearing shorts and feels stupid because, again, her legs are exposing in a way she’s not used to before, but training in the formal skirt would be an obstacle.

Ignis is nervous Gladio will think her legs are stupid. He IS staring, after all.

Goddamn she has BEAUTIFUL LEGS, HOW DO I TELL HER WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE I’M A PERV, I’M NOT, I’M JUST SO AMAZED SHE’S AWESOME ;________;

Lady Ignis figured a few years into training that fighting in a skirt is FAR more comfortable to fight in than it is in pants or shorts, but, of course, she can’t do that. Not even when Crowe, the only female Glaive, trains her does Iggy feel confident enough to train in a skirt.

So, she starts using a pair of lycra shorts under the skirt.

“Ignis, you can’t fight in a skirt.”

Gladio was SO wrong.

The skirt allowed her more freedom of movement.

Ignis is ROCKING that damn skirt while doing her acrobatic jumps and throwing her daggers.

Female Ignis is constantly asked out by Glaives and the Crownsguard trainees.

Female Ignis is not interested in romances, thank you very much.

Give her time, she just needs to know Gladio better, I know it

Just like I guess it may happen to normal Ignis, Lady Scientia doesn’t understand why all those guys and girls are staring at her when she goes pick Noctis from school.

Lady Ignis thinks her breasts are “unnecessary, it is not in my plans to ever feed any child and I am not interested in giving them any other use” (just give her time to know Gladio better, alksdjdf)

But she’s definitely NOT planning to do anything against her breasts, either, hahaha.

She really is into the idea that natural is good, so if she has to handle with boobs during training, then so be it.

Not like they’re giant. Indeed, I think Fem Ignis has a pretty humble set of breasts. Not too small, but not too big either.

Lady Ignis definitely is AMAZED when she meets Aranea, for obvious reasons XD

Ignis thinks it’s SUPER natural, and Gladio finds it SUPER natural too, but he’s very shy and afraid of thinking that if he takes it toooo smoothly, Ignis will think he crossed the line and will see him as perv.

Gladio cares too much to only be a perv and doesn’t want Iggy to think that of him :’(

He’s in mental struggle, the poor thing.

…Cor SO started wearing high heels just for her, so he could train her the way she wanted.

She likes her hair long.

She had it short for a while, thinking of practicality, but she struggled with it.

It was too short to comb, but long enough so that, every time she bowed the head, hair would hide her face by the sides like a curtain.

“I CAN’T have this disaster of hair that hides my face in front of Council members, Lords, and even worse the KING HIMSELF D’:”

Nobody of those people cared, tbh.

Still, she let it grow again.

Gladio’s still staring at her.

That Ignis likes natural looks and doesn’t work too hard on her appearance doesn’t mean she isn’t vain.

She is, to normal, healthy levels, like all people :)

Her pride? Her hair.

If she has time for it, she’ll brush it slow and good after showers and/or before sleeping.

IT’s SUPER SOFT.

Her hair reaches like 3 or so inches down the edge of the shoulderblades if she lets it free.

Pretty long imo.

She’d let it grow down to her waist if she could, down to the ass if she could, she’d absolutely love that.

But she works in royalty.

She takes normal time brushing her hair, she’s just paranoid.

On a daily basis/normally, she wears the hair on a side ponytail.

Lady Ignis also has very amazing, expert hands on braiding hair.

She has the goddamn BEST hairstyle on formal/royal parties.

It’s always an accident; she tries not to look more outstanding than Ladies (as in, real, noble Ladies whose ‘lady’ title is literally a title), but she’s always stealing spotlight.

She’s embarrassed for that.

Thing is, the Ladies wear too extravagant things as hair. Ignis looks much more simple, but without it being a simble bun either.

Elegant without being flamboyant.

Besides, have you looked at this woman? DAMN.

On those kind of events, she lets the vanity enjoy its time a little.

She says it’s etiquette and tries to convince herself, but truth is that she loves wearing flowers in her hair just for vanity. Usually only one, but still.

The flower always matches her dresses in color and looks.

Lady Ignis always has to help Noctis choose what to wear.

The prince is too lazy/uninterested to learn what matches what, so Lady Ignis has to help him choose clothes.

Also helps him with choosing and putting on his suits (while Noct is a teenager).

Female Ignis taught Noctis to do the tie knot.

Once, somebody made a very mean comment about her.

They said that she’s not as smart as people say she is, and that she was only hired in the role because she was a pretty face on a super submissive body, so it wasn’t her intelligence what got “that commoner” in the role, it was that she “warms the prince’s bed like an obedient bitch when he asks for it” and “surely also the king’s, that’s why King Regis seems to fond of her.”

Lady Ignis didn’t cry.

She said nothing.

She just continued working like normal, as if nothing had happened.

Lady Ignis is the devil.

Lady Ignis got private phone conversations/texts and information about the man that made that comment on her.

Lady Ignis sent the info anyway (only in private messages to specific people, but still).

She was kidding about the treason thing, it WAS clearly just a joke.

But guess who was fired from his job and was left by both lover and wife and disowned by mom.

That asshole.

You DO NOT mess with lady Ignis.

It was not revenge, Ignis had not intended to go so far, but “he was cheating on his wife and stealing from his mom and talked crap of his coworkers, we don’t need a poisonous person like that nearby the prince or the king.”

Back to her hair because DAMMIT, IGNIS LOVES HER DAMN HAIR.

During the journey she keeps it in a ponytail.

Sometimes side ponytail.

She was definitely allowing herself a tiny moment of vanity and comfort when they were on the boat to Altissia; she undid her hair and let it fly in the air.

She looked majestic.

Gladio’s still staring at her.

Being nearby sea water makes her hair curl a tiny bit at the tips.

She doesn’t like curly hair.

She was once given a curly hairstyle (the attendant of the Citadel insisted she’d look STUNNING), but Ignis hated it because it was harder to handle around.

Despite it looking pretty, she values practicality much more.

Never again.

You know how Brotherhood Ignis had the hair down on a fringe?

The equivalent in Lady Ignis is this Gentiana-style fringe.

Lady Ignis’ casual attire during the journey can be pants or her skirt and lycra shorts underneath.

She’s still wearing that thigh bag.

She’s still wearing suspenders.

I want to marry this woman.

Lady Ignis doesn’t paint her nails.

She DOESN’T HAVE TIME DAMMIT.

Doesn’t want to, anyway.

Ahahaha, lady Ignis, you’re lovely.

But she does…apply that…invisible layer…what is it called…

That nail polish thing that’s transparent and only used to make them look shiny/healthy/clean.

That, she does wear.

Lady Ignis HATES to have a lock of hair gone rebel and escaping her ponytail.

“IGNIS, STOP, YOU LOOK FINE.”

“YOU DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO MY HAIR, GLADIOLUS, IT’S MINE.”

Ignis is re-doing her ponytail no matter what you say.

I like to think with time she does grow comfy with hair escaping anyway at times.

She DOES have to fight and is required in the journey with constant camping and roaming in the wild. The least she can worry about is what others will say of a lock hanging free on her face.

Beware if you try to grip Lady Ignis’ hair in combat…you’re not only dying, you’re being tortured once she gets your hands on you.

Do not. Touch. Her hair.

Of course, unless she lets you.

One of Lady Ignis’ battle movements is if the enemy manages to undo her ponytail, she is SO using her long hair to smack them in the face as distraction.

A woman just smaked you in the face with her hair.

And it worked.

Lady Ignis sleeps in the tent with the boys. It’s still super natural to her.

They’re all fine with it.

Gladio sleeps on the farthest side from her because he still doesn’t want her to believe he’s a perv :’(

She wouldn’t think that, Gladio just wants to be sure and he’s a bit paranoid.

You’d think the guys trying to snitch her glasses was bad enough?

They’re snitching her bras, now.

How many times do you think Ignis has spent cooking breakfast not even trying to nag the guys anymore because she’s grown exhausted of being unheard when they are wearing her bras for fun?

Prompto once used one of her bras as slingshot.

It worked.

“How impromer and childish you all are. Do you not feel embarrassed of grabbing a lady’s private, intimate wear for your stupid little entertainment?”

Nah they don’t.
