2 Favorite canon thing about this character?

ahhh this one is gonna be so hard to think of. I mean in like all 3 cases it's "their personality" but XD Trying to get more specific than that

Damian: the gradual-ness of his character arc and how realistic his reaction to suddenly being asked to change how he does everything is written. Damian changes his behavior (no longer killing people) long before he changes his beliefs (it's OK to kill some people). We also see how he understandably cares about saving civilians long before he cares about preserving villains lives which makes sense both from a 'duh' perspective and from a 'logically damian would be raised to believe that he's saving the world' perspective.

I also like the general rough edges his character has, like even long after he's become very conventionally 'moral' I guess (like in Robin: Son of batman where he's like undeniably heroic and trying to make up for every bad thing he did) he still doesn't come across as super conventionally 'nice'.

Babs:

Her self isolation and bad-decision making tendencies have me captivated.

ok /j but :P I love how independent she is and how she responds to trauma and how we see her incredibly reluctant to reach out to people around her. I love when she approaches problems from a nexus of control even though she would hate it if people approached her problems from that POV.

She's a fun character who often does make missteps in her personal relationships but nevertheless always tries to correct them

Cassandra:

Cass I love her perfectionism and the way she approaches her problems. even though I mentioned in Damian's answer that I loved how gradual his character arc and un-learning assassin stuff was, I also love how sudden Cass leaving Cain was*. It works completely for her characterization.

Then the way she approaches her problem (of having killed someone) is completely all-in cass-y. Cass is trying to grapple with what she did as a child (and I saw some really convincing meta about how the guilt she felt from killing the guy was not necessarily due to seeing his pain, as she'd seen pain before, but due to not understanding his death, i'll dig it up soon: EDIT FOUND IT (link)). Her thing is very simple: she killed someone so she deserves to die. She won't kill herself, but she has very little regard for her own life and is perfectly fine going out saving people. and the way she approaches her guilt pre her Shiva arc often goes from a kind of projecting on people I think (where she projects her own guilt on the guy she breaks out of death row when the mother of his victim approaches her, she gives him back to go to his death, she returns a kid to her mom who is exploiting for her talents rather than her criminal father who loves her) and then when she's dealt with her own guilt she can address people in a way that does not quite have that specter of guilt hanging over her.

*tho important note: I don't think that Cass leaving Cain was her character arc, it's a backstory detail

4: f you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

I would put them all in a well-adapted live action movie so more people know about them :P Unless this is like straight up drop them into an already existing fictional universe, it's unclear. Like I like thinking of a 'Batfam as Jedi' AU for one tumblr post for example, but I don't really care enough about 'characters in alternate universe' to need to see it in a fully developed story. A lot of what makes them unique and fun is specific to the universe.

8 What’s something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Damian: Either uwu baby-ifying him so whichever fave can take care of him and protect him at the expense of his canonical competence or acting like he's a terrible person and any time DC writes character assassination for him it was IC because he's always a terrible person.

Cass: forgetting she exists, having her there to just prop up Tim or Jason (Jason ???????), diminishing her competence to prop up some batboy and act like they can easily 'hack' her abilities.

Babs: babsgirl stuff. also people who remember with perfect clarity every jerk thing she hdid and use it against her t osay she's a terrible person (instead of just like. a realistic person with flaws) but conveniently ignore when their favorite batboy did similar things, oftentimes without even trying to make amends.

11 Would you date this character? (just babs and cass)

I would not date either of them sorry ladies. I love you but i'm already mentally ill I don't need more people's issues and emotional constipation

Hmmm dc comics in general

some heroes from the silver age who have hung around for so long (Barry, Hal, Ollie, Bruce) should be retired.

Batfam: they need to stop teaming up so much. It just reduces everyone to one character trait.

Also Zdarsky is an objectively terrible writer for everyone. I don't know if that's unpopular or people hate him just for Damian. But :P he's bad for everyone, even Tim and Bruce I would say, because if you can't make your special guy look good without making everyone else look worse.... that's bad writing.

wonder woman: hmmmm trying to think of any actually unpopular opinions i have for her. I don't care for her ship with Steve Trevor? I think she's not built for long term relationships no matter what.

also i think the gods are shitty to the amazons and she deserves to beat them up but im fine that she doesn't. she still acts in accordance to her morals, its not like she does things against them b/c the gods asked. and every paragon-y type her is allowed at least one flaw that makes them miserable personally

I've read his 4 issue mini, IDK if he has solo titles besides that. It was pretty charming. but i'll also confess I was mostly reading for Bette XD

favorite appearance is hard. my favorite comic that he's been in is NTT, but I dont think it's my favorite for Gar. He's mostly charming in titans 2008 until he starts moping over raven dumping him and its like shut uppppppppp no one cares. i guess we'll go with the beast boy mini :P

barry allen: i've read some of his flash series, read thru the first 2 volumes of showcase presents: flash. I mostly thought that he was kind of boring sorry barry

his best appearances is crisis on infinite earths b/c then he died and let a more interesting character take over. sorry again barry.

kendra saunders:

i've read hawkman 2002 and hawkgirl 2006, + her recent 6 issue mini series. i generally liked them her mini being my favorite. I also liked her on justice league 2006 that was fun.

favorite appearance is her recent mini. that writer was good at taking into account past elements from her new-earth continuity and elaborating on her backstory and how she felt. my only complaint was that it was too short ;_;

how did you get into writing fanfiction?

for SWTOR (first fanfic stuff i posted) it was wanting to write stories with my OCs, since all the player characters in SWTOR have unique personalities and would do their canon decisions differently than others.

For DC it was like 'fix it' to comics I didn't like at first, my first DC fic was trying to re-write Batman and Son.

Job is going much better this year than previous years; I feel like I'm on top of everything (including grading)

Dad is alive and well (I posted about him being hospitalized last year but i don't think i got into a lot of detail... anyway there were a couple months we thought he was genuinely going to die).

lots of hopefully good comics coming out soon :3 I think i'm subbed to the most series i've been subbed to in a while

can't think of any good serious wisdom so writing wise: Write for yourself, but don't write for yourself as a writer. write for yourself as a reader. if you just skip to the fun parts to write, you'll often miss the in-between steps that are necessary to make emotional moments hit.

most of the time "x character is hurt to make y character feel sad", treating favorite characters oversimplified, any use of fanony tropes including big bro cooking fiend jason, tim drake coffee addict poor little meow meow, etc....

hmm am I going for funny lore?

Funny lore would be that Alfred Pennyworth was Bruce's most dangerous villain in the silver age.

General favorite lore, like pieces of lore that are important to characters are Damian's rocky intro to the Batfam and Dick's first arc as becoming Nightwing, pre post COIE retcons. Damian's intro to the batfam involving him meeting them first, then not joining and being presumed dead/going back to the league, then having another encounter in RRAG where they're more allied but still not really, then eventually joining Batfam when Dick is Batman is what I prefer to just "Damian meets Bruce, becomes Robin".

Dick's original Nightwing arc involves him choosing to leave Robin after realizing it does not work for him, but wanting to do things different from Bruce but they still part on terms of mutual respect.

damian and cass. dc please they have so much potential.

Batman Chronicles #8: The Prison - one of my favorite single issue Talia stories. We get to see inside her head and how she perceives things, we see her execute successfully plan to kill Bruce (But she does not do so), and we get to see her conflict with her father and her dreams!

Secret Origins #20 by Barbara Randall - this is the best Babs as Batgirl origins I've read hands down.

Batgirl (2000) #16 - I love seeing Cass emphasizing with kids and wanting to give people a second chance!! !

Robin: Son of batman #12: Is it cheating to put the end of a storyline in here? Probably. But it has one of my favorite instances of Damian empathizing with another kid he perceives in his situation and that being used to save the world SO...

I guess, assuming I have started reading, (i've mostly seen batfam fanfic in the wild, rather than cultivated via friends recs, so thats whats im doing examples from)

any flattening of dynamics that are in canon complicated, or going with the worst interpretation for one character but not for another, like "so and so is cruel and evil and is unjustly oppressing my blorbo" - dick and/or damian oppresses tim, bruce oppresses dick and/or jason, dick or tim has to save damian from evil abusive bruce..

anything where Damian is too helpless or soft

related to this b/c ive tried to read fics like this and its not worked for me: any damian and tim finally make things right between each other fic that relies on Damian being in a helpless position and tim being comforting or saving him... put them on equal footing fuckwads

anything where Talia is villainized

the batfam girls showing up briefly and then disappearing like just dont include them if you dont want to write them

any description in which the author admits they haven't read any comics

2 Favorite canon thing about this character?

Kendra: Not a super serious character trait but her self destructive tendencies and just going back in battle while injured (including tying a mace to her broken arm) is fun :P

Carter: the way he acts different as hawkman and as carter (at least in JSA 1999 and Hawkman 2002 era, IDK about all eras). But it seems like an unexplored avenue for characterization and many superheroes kind of just act like themselves in both personas, so it's neat different attributes are emphasized.

12 What’s a headcanon you have for this character?

Since Kendra is canonically a movie buff, I think she likes lots of old movies and the more depressing the better.

carter i'm not sure... I guess that when it's his turn to cook for hector (back when he was a kid), he mostly cooks macaroni and cheese and easy stuff, which also aligning with my headcanon is that hector loves that anyway so no complaints from him

hmmm im bad at fashion aesthetics.

kendra: I think Kendra likes kind of aughts-ish fashion no this isn't just because her comic was published in the 2000s anyway especially the thick mascara :P tho I guess nowadays there's also super long eyelash fashion i've seen people using...

carter: i think he'd wear like... dad fashion. sorry he just does not strike me as very fashionably adventurous. like button up shirts and nice ish pants (sometimes jeans).

my favorite thing about them: ... her unhingedness honestly. :P It makes her fun. she gets injured in JLA 2006 and Hawkman 2002 and both times is like "let me just bandage my injured arm and hop back into the field".

any headcanons I have or like (If I have headcanons about them): Kendra likes sad movies, the sadder the better. She's watching a movie with Carter and he's like 😭 and she's like 😁

my favorite appearance with them: hmmm hard to tell b/c she's often a side character RIP kendra. That said I like (most of) her arc in the first 16 issues of Hawkman 2002 and if I want to limit it to one scene, it'd be this scene (link) where she straps her mace to her broken arm and puts the claw of horus on the other

Carter:

My favorite thing: I honestly find it kind of refreshing how he's one of the superheroes who isn't just Carter but in a helmet when he's hawkman (at least in Geoff Johns Hawkman 2002). Like he's a lot less patient as hawkman generally and more direct.

any headcanons: I headcanon that carter just died and reincarnated sorry I find the merging with Katar in the HawkRealm or whatever to explain why he's not old dumb :P And i headcanon that this influences why he acts different as Hawkman and carter - he's more aggro as hawkman because he feels he has to prove himself, because he's young (and whether he likes it or not, perceived as less experienced) but all the friends he remembers being his peers on the JSA are old

Favorite appearance with him: ... hmm IG Hawkman 2002? He's the protagonist there.

Hector:

favorite thing: I'm sorry I love that teenage hector in infinity inc is kind of an asshole. you can pry asshole hec from my cold dead hands. he puts his foot in his mouth all the time. I also like that he's insecure but there's nothing to like. soften it? He realizes he's acting like an asshole when he's insecure that lyta's stronger than him, but the writers don't do some pussy-ass 'oh training arc for hector how dare he be less strong than his GF'

any headcanons: hector likes the blandest most kid food possible. he loves craft macncheese and cheese pizza

Damian + Cass have such potential for good sibling interaction but DC does not let them interact much in canon ;_; I have a whole tag dedicated to it (link)

i think they would have misunderstandings w/ each other and get on each others nerves at first, but then we'd get to see them get closer and cass could be someone damian talks to who 'gets' it in some way.

kory vs diana - it would be tough NGL. I'll say Diana b/c her tiara is sharp enough to kill a god so she'd def be able to get past kory's invulnerability. but pretty close. they both are very strong and very experienced fighters (and hippolyte says pre COIE that Kory is in Diana's league)

babs or damian - i think based on the # of posts I make on each character i have to say currently I like damian better :P But only a teeny litte bit.
