Nora O’Connor — My Heart (Pravda)
Tumblr media
youtube
Nora O’Connor makes countrified songs with city suavity. They’re heartfelt but never maudlin, simply conceived but masterfully arranged and played. They feel direct and personal and authentic, but they evidence a great deal of craft, too. Nora O’Connor is a pro, but not spoiled by it.
Even if you’ve never encountered O’Connor in her solo guise, you’ve likely heard her in the background. She tours regularly with Iron & Wine and plays and sings with Andrew Bird. At various times, she has backed up Neko Case, the New Pornographers, the Decemberists, John Wesley Harding and Mavis Staples. She’s a member of the doo-wopping, barber-shopping, 40s-radio quintuplet the Flat Five, and along with Kelly Hogan, Jon Langford and Sally Timms, a staple of Chicago’s thriving alt.country scene. This is only her third solo album, but never mind that. She’s been busy.
With My Heart, O’Connor treads agilely across country styles, from slow rocking heartbreakers (“Sore”), to dusky, organ laced waltzes etched by experience (“Grace’), to a sprightly, bluegrassy ramble the heart of blue America (“Cambridge Cold”). A lone, finger-picked instrumental (“Winwoof”) showcases O’Connor’s Takoma-style skills.  A handful of these songs—and some of the best—hardly sound like country at all. “My Heart” plunks down a terse piano line into its tale of romantic disappointment; it conjures art-song, cabaret music as much as twang. And “Follow Me” with its devastating pedal steel—that’s Jon Rauhouse, by the way—finds a Sadies-like magic interval between country and psychedelia.
O’Connor brings in her Flat Five bandmates for vocal and instrumental support—Casey McDonough on bass and guitar, Scott Ligon on keyboards and guitar, Alex Hall on drums and piano and Steve Dawson on guitars and keyboards. The arrangements are varied, interesting and expertly executed. These are not the kind of people who ever miss a note.
But mostly it’s Nora O’Connor with her wry, side-eyed view of the world, the clean, gorgeous lines of her melodies and that voice full of strength and vulnerability. She’s been off in the corner for a while, but not because she’s bad. It’s past time for her to come center stage.

It's funny how I've been consuming a lot of media related to sports, but I don't even like to play or watch them for fun (expect F1).
Here examples:
This week I finished the Foxhole court, ten raven king and started the king’s men for third time
I watched Challengers 2 times already
And I’m an addict to sport movies

'Important news: Andrew Scott is, once again, gushing about his All of Us Strangers co-star Paul Mescal.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the actor reflected on the “wonderful” friendship that has formed between the duo as a result of their time on the lauded LGBTQIA+ fantasy drama.
“I adore Paul. Obviously it’s been a tough time recently and he just continues to be a wonderful friend. It’s everything,” said Scott, whose mother tragically passed away in March following a “sudden illness”.
“The more I work in the industry, I realise, you make some stuff that people love and you make some stuff that people don’t like, and all really that you are left with is the relationships that you make.”
Scott added of Pescal: “I love him dearly.”
This isn’t the first time the duo have expressed their love for one another. In an interview with British Vogue, Mescal said the film “was just the perfect climate to fall in love with Andrew as a human being”.
And in a segment called “Ask Me Anything” for Elle UK, Mescal described his co-star as “wonderfully eloquent”: “He lives by the things he says, which I think is all and well good sounding smart, but I think you have to live by it, and he does that in spades”.
Scott responded: “When I think about Paul, I think there’s something that’s very forthright about you that’s really wonderful.
“It’s a really good quality. You’re not backwards and coming forwards on things you believe, but some people really are.
“I think there’s a real difference between somebody being nice and somebody being good… and Paul is a really, really good person, and that’s what I love about him.”
All of Us Strangers follows Adam, a screenwriter (Scott) who is pulled back into his childhood home “where he discovers that his long-dead parents are both living and look the same age as the day they died over 30 years ago”.
At the same time, Adam embarks on a passionate romance with his “mysterious” neighbour Harry (Mescal).
Directed by Andrew Haigh, All of Us Strangers received universal critical acclaim, becoming one of the most praised LGBTQIA+ films in history. Despite this, it failed to garner a single nomination at the Academy Awards, which was unanimously referred to as a “snub”.
Since its release, Scott has starred as the title character in Netflix’s neo-noir series Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith’s classic crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Later this year, Mescal will star as Lucius Verus in the much-anticipated Gladiator sequel, directed by Ridley Scott.
He’s also set to star alongside Josh O’Connor (God’s Own Country) in the LGBTQIA+ drama The History of Sound, which hails from the director and executive producer of Mary & George.'

Jan 1 - Day #2 - A Fortnight of Books
I am loving these prompts!
Most surprising (in a good way) book of this year?
Tumblr media
"A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen
I was shocked how glad I was that I read this, because I knew it mostly as an example Chesterton and similar authors of the rough time period used to discuss the controversial feminist ideas of the day. In other words, I knew it by reputation through the lens of "'A Doll's House' reflects everything wrong with how we think about women and marriage these days." This is not to say the historical context/critical reception at time of its release is not important - this play would fall flat without them. But taking the play on its own terms, here's what I say. Nora is 100% right about the problem she and Torvald face - even though they do their best to love each other and have been happy in the lesser idea of marriage society has shaped them to believe in, there is no respect or maturity in their marriage and it will ultimately fail. Nora has her eyes opened to the idea of what marriage should be - utter self gift of each to the other, striving and sacrificing always for trust and respect, together helping the other thrive in all that they are, as a team and in their own individuality and in their responsibility to their children and community. A marriage with no stupid delineation between love and respect, a marriage of equals. She has no words for it, but what she's talking about is a ToB marriage, in fact.
But she realizes that society has fed her and her husband extremely messed up ideas about what it means to been a good upperclass woman or man, and to have a good marriage, and that they're not equipped to embrace what a true marriage should be. So she walks out and leaves no contact information. I think she made the wrong choice. I think what we see in this play, as horrible as the situation is, is a Flannery O'Connor time moment of grace. The true ugliness of Nora and Torvald's relationship has been made clear, and the contrasting beautiful marriage they both desire has been made manifest. This is awesome! This is what a play SHOULD do! The solution it proposes leaves a lot to be desired, but I think that's only because neither Nora nor Ibsen knows how to solve the problem, and making a clean break is all that they can come up with. But it seems to me that in that moment of grace, Nora and Torvald should have determined to make one, last incredible try. Separation might have to be involved, for a time. Certainly extremely hard work and brutal honesty would have to be involved. And there's nothing to say they would be successful - but if they only gave it one chance now that they KNOW the truth that was hidden from them... And that's why I like this play. I disagree with how Ibsen wraps it up, but he was RIGHT to raise this issue to the light back in his day, and I think the conversations around it must have been stupendous. Where is that post about how all fiction has been touched by sin, and you can focus on that, but you can also find where it has been touched by truth? So I have a complex relationship with this play, but am very glad I read it. Oh, and Nora has such an amazing arc.
(Some of this may be off - it's been nearly a year since I read it and some bits are hazy.)
Most disappointing book/Book you wish you enjoyed more than you did?
Tumblr media
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
I DNF'd this one. Ugh, I was so excited for the new Cosmere book - bought it the day it hit the shelves, and everything! But the good parts became overshadowed for me by all the immature body stuff and "sneaking peeks." I roll my eyes in this book's general direction. If you want to make a point about vulnerability, there are better ways to do it.
Sanderson, if Stormlight 5 isn't an awesome series finale to make up for this, you're the one who's getting magically turned into a coat rack.

Julee Cruise performs Falling on Saturday Night Live
Julee performed in SNL's Season 15 Episode 19 that aired on May 12 1990. She stepped in after musical guest Sinéad O'Connor joined actor Nora Dunn's protest against Andrew Dice Clay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to TIME Magazine: The boycott began when Nora Dunn, a cast member since 1985, announced she would not share the stage with Clay, in protest against his foul-mouthed material denigrating women, homosexuals and minority groups. Two days later, singer Sinead O'Connor, whose song Nothing Compares 2 U is No. 1 on the Billboard charts, backed out of her guest appearance. Said O'Connor: "It shows disrespect to women that Saturday Night Live expected me to perform on the same show as Andrew Dice Clay."

Farewell - diese Musiker mussten 2023 gehen
Tumblr media
Here's why I desperately need a season 3 of The Wilds :
- I need Rachel Reid to get her revenge. I mean, HELLO?! She lost a whole hand! And had to go through the grief of losing her sister, despite...
- I want Gretchen Klein to go to jail for all that she's done, and for the kids to get the justice they deserve. Besides, that whole "and you almost got my number" to Leah implied so much... It was so dark and perverse, and the second time she made sexual "jokes" about TEENAGE GIRLS.
- I NEED SETH TO DIE.
- I want to see where Sarah Streicher & Amy B. Harris were gonna take the relationship between Fatin and Leah. Like, it's visceral at this point.
- I want to see Martha and Kirin happy, and maybe find LOVE.
- I couldn't wait to discover how the girls and the boys would've interacted. I mean, Fatin was already appearing extra protective over Leah in the last episode of season 2!!
- Lastly, I was already ready to get emotional over Rachel and Nora's reunion, and Leah and Nora's confrontation. Whatever Nora did, I felt so sad for her because Gretchen's manipulation game is top-notch, and she lied to literally EVERYBODY.
The whole experiment reeks of nazism, and I want to see it get crushed.
