Here's a fun idea: Slade and Dick end up working together on some case/contract, and end up having to climb the side of an icy mountain. There are ropes tying them together as they climb up, but something happens (they get attacked/blizzard/whatever) and Slade ends up injured and unconscious.

Dick can't support Slade's weight. He's clinging desperately to the mountain. They're both going to fall.

He needs to cut the rope. Slade will survive the fall. But Dick can't bring himself to watch another person he cares about fall.

Dick stays there in frozen agony, the rope biting into his waist, paralyzed by terror and grief.

He finally manages to cut the rope. He finishes climbing, subdues the attackers or whatever, and works his way back down to Slade. By the time he gets there, he's sobbing so hard he can barely see, and Slade's body is nowhere to be found.

Dick stumbling blindly in a raging snow storm, calling out for Slade in a broken voice, hating himself so fiercely it hurts. He can see his parents' mangled forms every time he closes his eyes and now he has Slade's to add to that.

Meanwhile Slade woke up at the bottom of the mountain and was more than a little pissed when he saw the cut rope. He can't hold onto the rage in the face of Grayson's clear breakdown, however, and rescues his little bird from both the elements and himself, reassuring him that Slade is in one piece and not angry at him.

i was just in the crew for The Wizard of Oz for my school's spring musical and, right after the Scarecrow gets freed from his pole, he has to stumble and fall (several times) onstage, and that just activated primal whump instincts for me. idk what else to say here i just got instant whumperflies watching it

Hi Rev! Could you tell us about your favorite ways of locomotion in insects?

Honestly, I think my favorite method of insect (and arachnid) locomotion is "falling."

Big mammals (and especially us big bipedal mammals with heads that split like melons) think of falling very differently from the smaller, lighter animals that are closer to the ground. Most insects are too lightweight to have to worry about silly things like terminal velocity, so falling is just another way of moving to them.

And why not? Gravity is already doing most of the work pulling you down, so you don't even have to exert any energy. If you don't have to worry about taking fall damage, there's no reason not to take the quickest route to the ground--or the quickest way to go any direction, if you need to escape.

In some cases, their shapes are very adapted for it. I have shed skins from baby praying mantises that have kept their shape. If you blow on them, they don't fall over--they land perfectly right side up, or latch onto a nearby surface! They evolved exactly right to catch themselves when dropping down from higher foliage. (Though, adult mantises are significantly less nimble.)

So, if you see an insect fall, don't think that it's clumsy. Just admire the elegant execution of a tried and tested escape plan! ...Unless it's something like a big beetle landing on its back, obviously. That was not planned.
