Nostalgia and Memories Rendering/Final Thoughts
23/10/2023

Rendered model using the Arnold renderer in Maya.
With all of the texturing completed, I decided to render the model and apply all the materials to finish it off. I used the Arnold renderer in Maya to do this, as I am very comfortable with and familiar with this renderer, and know exactly how reliable it is.
I attached the materials using an AIStandardSurface material because I like how this material reacts with Arnold and how I can customise the reflections and bump/normal maps. I also added in a skydome light to customise a background colour that would compliment the colours used in the model, and added a directional light for added brightness to the scene.
Tumblr media
To create the ladybug model, I was able to reuse the turtle shape and just alter a few shapes. I flattened out the head a bit further and widened the overall sandpit shape to create some variation between the models. I also smoothed out the shell grooved from the lid and after learning from how that turned out, decided to just add in the centre line for some extra depth and texture paint on the spots.
Using the same masking techniques, I was able to create a similar level of decay and damage to the plastic and add in dimensional colour to the model. I used a textured brush and the symmetry tool to add in the spots so they looked like they were fading away with age. Unfortunately, I cannot find any progress pictures for this process, but I continued on to set this model up for rendering in the same way as the turtle so the renders would be consistent.
I rendered as a 2K square image, since it has a similar appearance to the 4K square but is a much faster render, but if I were to render a finalised piece I would make sure to do a full 4K render to make sure the quality really stands out. Looking back on this piece, I am pleased with how it turned out as my first prop piece, as well as my first full attempt at using Substance Painter to texture a model. Unfortunately, I don't think the detail of my textures fully showed up in my renders because I didn't turn down the reflection of the material enough, so I need to be more aware of this for future renders.

I’m pleased with how the room turned out. I would have liked to create more detailed objects, for example I planned to make my desk chair, monitor, lamp and radiators. But what I have I would consider a good quality, especially since the topology is clean which was a main goal of mine for this project.
That being said there are a few sections which I would clean up, for example the two corners at the foot of the bed are a little messy. As well as two corners on one of the shelves of my desk.

Nostalgia & Memory: Final Piece
For my final piece I wanted to make a short video set to the song I chose previously (A Horse With No Name by America). For the submission it needs to only be 30 seconds long so I had to edit the music a little to make it fit the way I wanted it to.
If I were to develop this project further I'd like to make a video to the full song and incorporate a lot more into the scene. I'd want to flesh out the room a bit more with more furniture and to make the landscape a bit more interesting, as so far all I did was add a texture, some rock megascans, and some foliage (all from Quixel). I'd also like to add in more movement, as it's pretty static with not a lot going on yet.
I also ran into a problem with rendering my sequence where the windows were clipping through the wall mesh in the render but not in the viewport. I can't work out why and if its the windows moving in the render or a problem with the wall mesh, as it seems like the hole in the wall is smaller in the render. As I'm still very unfamiliar with UE5 I wasn't able to fix the problem myself and couldn't find any information online that helped, so I'm planning to ask today during class and see if anyone knows what the problem might be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of this problem I ended up using just a screen recording of the cinematic rather than a proper render for my piece this time - the quality is not great but I'd rather that than the strange clipping issue for now.
Here's the final piece for this assignment. As I said before, I have quite a cool vision of where I can further take this without the 30 second time constraint. However, I wanted to showcase the whole scene as it is now and this simple camera movement was the best I could think of without getting to involved with lots of editing etc. I think as well changing up the camera angles in the future could be a great way of making the vibe different (e.g. more creepy or unsettling).

Nostalgia and Memories Development
22/10/2023
Tumblr media
Development process.
Using Blender, I began making the model using a sphere that I altered the shape of to create a dome with a flat base for stability. the basic shape of this piece was fairly simple, so I used multiple spheres to add the head and legs, as well as the eyes, to get the generic idea down.
To create the actual sandpit, I used the extrude tool to push in the faces of the pit. For the edges, I used the bevel tool to smooth and shape them, since a children's sandpit wouldn't have sharp edges for safety reasons. This also helped make it have a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing appearance to work with when texturing later. To make the sand, I sized down a cube to fit the space and used remesh to increase the poly-count, before using the sculpting tools to create texture and shape to give the appearance of sand.
To make the lid, I also used a sphere that I modelled into a half dome, and used the extrude tool to push in the bottom curve as far as I could. I also used the bevel tool to round out the edges and add some thickness back. Using the sculpt tools, I carved in the turtle shell pattern but found that the outcome wasn't as neat as I had hoped. In the future, I would consider doing this in Substance Painter with the texture instead, or take more time and retopologise the lid to get the poly-faces where I'd want the shape to be and extrude it for a cleaner finish.

"Substance 3D Painter First Steps: 02 - Painting Dirt & Stitching"(Adobe Substance Painter, 2021)
I had minimal experience using Substance Painter prior to this task, so I wanted to focus on developing this skill further, since I know I'll want to use it for at least one of my development pieces. I started following the Adobe Substance 3D tutorials to get an idea of tools to use, as well as how to layer colours and textures.
Tumblr media
Textures painted in Adobe Substance Painter.
I used two layers with different plastic textures to make this, one being a weathered plastic and the other being scratched plastic. Using a black mask, I layered these textures to add more damage in some places than others for a more realistic effect, as it wouldn't have an equal level of damage all over. I also changed the colours to slightly different shades of green to add some extra dimension to the overall colour while using the mask.
To texture the sand, I used the same technique to add in different colours and textures throughout. I added in a lot of texture to the actual model so this needed less working into to get the same effect because the majority of the texture was already there. For the lid, I used a shiny plastic material that I remembered my own sandpit having so it would stand out better, and used a darker shade of green to deepen the grooves I added in the modelling.
In my next post, I will cover how I changed this model to also git the ladybug design, as well as rendering tools.

Nostalgia and Memory blog post 2
18/10/2023
For this week I plan to create my room using Blender as it's a software I'm familiar with but have minimal experience using. I'll watch a few tutorials over the creation of this project.
I also aim to make sure my topology is clean, as in the past I have had trouble with it being messy and I want to avoid this going forward.
This tutorial is from a few years ago but has been updated to this year, it goes over all the basics of Blender.
youtube
(3DGreenhorn, 2021)
These tutorials are part of a series of videos that focus on covering all aspects of Blender while creating one model throughout. They are widely recommended as a good place to start when learning Blender.

Here is my attempt at following two videos of the donut tutorial. I think it turned out well but more importantly it shows that I now have a grasp on the basics of blender which will enable me to create this weeks project.
