this fic is very much a slow-burn. i have a lot planned, so i spend a lot of time weaving in details/foreshadowing that won't pay off for a while. as it stands, we're around 50,000 words in and i'm just about to get into the main plot. so.... yeah haha (really want to get the next chapter out this sunday/monday, but we shall see haha.)

i've been putting off writing this, but i can't exactly not, so... i'll try and make this brief.

in short: i've had an epiphany.

i've been writing/brainstorming this fic since november/december last year, and since then, my ideas and understandings of the show and it's characters have evolved. and with them, my plans and understandings for iwf.

i want to be clear: this is not me saying i'm done with iwf, or going on some long hiatus. in fact, it's more the opposite.

having graduated, with summer in full swing, and feeling more sure than ever about where i want to take this fic (as well as remaining fully invested in this fandom), i plan to do more writing than ever before B)

that said: something needs to change.

this fic has been, and continues to be, my baby (besides my ever-growing, yet rarely spoken of, tmnt iteration) for most of the time i've been active in this fandom.

i've long struggled with motivation for big writing projects, but i am resolved to keep with this one because i have a story worth telling. will it be worth reading? who's to say!! (i hope so /gen)

but, as you might've noticed, my more recent updates (especially around the end of arc I) were... bad. maybe not bad-bad, but still bad from a 'technical writing/story' perspective. i struggled a lot with them, and i think that really shows.

i've was trying to figure out why its come to be this way while pushing forward by forcing myself to write, but that didn't work. it wasn't until this week, tuesday, when realization struck me (while watching a video essay, lol).

it made me realize a big part of what was making me unhappy was something i already knew, an issue underlying the fic (and my writing style) as a whole.

with this in mind, i can't keep going forward in the way i had planned.

i'm not gonna go back and change arc I. while the problem is there, especially in the later chapters, i'm early enough on that i can turn things around and (hopefully) root out the problem(s) without any major changes to what i've written/set up so far.

but to do this, i need time.

i know i know i just took a 2-3 week long break, but to pull this off, i need time to prepare and rewrite. i'm halfway through revisions for the arc II outline, and i'll need to heavily revise/rewrite several chapters, plus write some new stuff (since i'm axing the next couple i had planned/written out... rip.)

if all goes well, it shouldn't take longer than two weeks. best case scenario, i get it done in one. we'll see.

until then, i humbly ask for your patience.

as a note:

i could go deep into my inspirations for this fic, where i wanted to go originally, what's changed since then, and especially what brought me to my realization (plus the specifics of said realization) but i said i would try to make this brief, and here we are, [insert amount of words] later.

(tl;dr -- i am not done writing iwf. however, i had a realization that led to me reevaluating my writing and determining that i need to rewrite/revise my arc II outline, and edit/revise/completely rewrite the next several chapters.

this means i am planning to take another week or so off (i am sosososo sorry) to iron everything out and get ahead.

this whole post was me trying to explain the reasoning behind this decision, with an underlying sense of desperate patheticism to match (/j /lh).)

not me writing a rexsoka post-apocalypse au on this fine thanksgiving day

this is a modern au, sort of, in that it’s set on earth, just in the future. it’s kind of a “what if america had a clone army” au. this takes place at the tail end of the second clone war, which is ending because most of the population has been wiped out. rex has just gotten news that ahsoka has been seriously injured but honorably discharged and is ready to come home.

He’d left at dawn and arrived at dusk. The VA hospital was a relic of a different world—a cleanly paved parking lot for cars that no longer existed, windows unbroken by stones, electric light streaming out. He slid a mask on over his nose and mouth, secured goggles over his eyes, threw a hood over his head. Years ago this might have made him look suspicious, but now these things were as necessary and common as shoes. 

Inside there was no one at the front counter to greet him. Someone had left a sheaf of papers on which was handwritten, PICKING UP. Below it was a list of names and beside them, room numbers. Many were crossed out already. He flipped to the Ts. 

SGT. TANO, AHSOKA, 5-C.

Caution tape spanned each of the three elevators. He took the stairs. He was certain he’d been here before though he couldn’t remember why. Clones had their own medical facilities. Once he reached the fifth floor, the silence was broken by quiet groaning and crying. Some lights were out and hadn’t been replaced; some were flickering. The central cluster of desks held computers that weren’t on, or maybe even functional. He kept looking for a nurse, doctor, orderly, anyone, but the halls were empty. He reached 5-C, a small room sectioned off with curtains. He peeked behind the first and saw a pale-skinned arm. He moved to the second, near the window, and gently pushed back the curtain. There she was. Only asleep, hopefully. When his men were seriously injured he used to tell them, It’s not bad, you’re fine, just walk it off, soldier. But this, even he had to admit, was bad.

Half of her face was wrapped up in gauze. Her right arm was in a cast, nestled in a sling. He couldn’t see below that, but under the blanket he could tell there was something around her leg. A cast, or some other contraption holding it all together. She was knocked out by something, hopefully pain pills of some kind. He stepped closer, until he was at her bedside looking down at her. He was not a man of many emotions but in that moment it all washed over him—her smile greeting him every day of summer; the terror he’d held inside him from the moment she left, worse than any he’d felt on the front lines. He wished he’d fought her harder, said the exact right thing she needed to hear to convince her no, this wasn’t worth it. Stay, please stay. But back then he thought the war was over. He thought she’d be put behind a desk somewhere, or get sent out to do humanitarian relief. Natural disaster cleanup. That was the life she wanted. Then again, no one got to live the life they wanted. Most people didn’t get to live it at all.

He reached up, gently dragged his knuckles down the uninjured side of her face. Soft brown skin. Warm. He remembered when her cheeks used to be so much rounder, all smiles and a little baby fat. Now she looked thin and sallow, like she hadn’t seen a full meal in years. 

Suddenly she gripped his wrist and put him in a simple but startlingly effective armlock. Her eyes shot open. They were just as blue as they’d always been, but they were angry, and afraid, and he didn’t recognize anything behind them. What had she been through? Who was she now? With his free hand he tugged down his hood. Her gaze flicked upward. Her face softened. “Rex?”

In der vergangenen Woche sind erneut Gespräche der ukrainischen Regierung mit internationalen Investoren gescheitert, in denen Kiew um eine Verlängerung der Rückzahlungsfrist und einen teilweisen Schuldenerlass gebeten hat. Die Gespräche wurden zwischen dem 3. und 14. Juni hinter verschlossenen Türen geführt, wie das ukrainische Finanzministerium diese Woche mitteilte.

Die Anleihegläubiger haben seit 2022 keine Zahlungen mehr von der Ukraine erhalten. Mit dem Beginn der russischen Invasion hatten sie einem zweijährigen Moratorium zugestimmt. Aber nun drängt die Zeit, denn die Tilgungsfrist des Anleihepakets im Wert von 20 Milliarden US-Dollar endet am 1. August.

Die Ukraine bittet die Anleihegläubiger – darunter der amerikanische Großinvestor Blackrock, der französische Fonds Amundi und der britische internationale Anleger Amia Capital – größere Verluste zu akzeptieren, da sie andernfalls ihre Ausgaben für das Militär und den Wiederaufbau des Landes empfindlich einschränken müsse. „Um Kriege zu gewinnen, müssen starke Armeen durch starke Volkswirtschaften gestützt werden“, sagte der ukrainische Finanzminister Sergii Marchenko.

Doch die Forderungen gehen den Investoren zu weit. In einer Erklärung teilte die Gläubigergruppe um Blackrock und Co. mit, dass sie sich um eine Einigung bemühe. Allerdings liege der von der ukrainischen Regierung vorgeschlagene Abschlag in Höhe von 60 Prozent deutlich über den Erwartungen des Finanzmarktes. Lediglich ein „Haircut“ (Schuldenschnitt) von rund 20 Prozent sei vertretbar. Der von Kiew vorgeschlagene Abschlag berge die Gefahr, dass das Vertrauen künftiger Investoren in der Ukraine „erheblichen Schaden“ nehme.

Eine Einigung mit den privaten Gläubigern ist auch deshalb nötig, weil die Ukraine auf weitere Kredite des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) angewiesen ist. Der IWF hat mit der ukrainischen Regierung vereinbart, dass das Verhältnis der Staatsverschuldung zum Bruttoinlandsprodukt bis 2033 auf 60 Prozent sinken soll. Im vergangenen Jahr lag die Schuldenquote bei 82,87 Prozent, Ende 2024 dürfte sie Schätzungen zufolge mehr als 94 Prozent betragen.

Um die Forderungen der internationalen Gläubiger erfüllen zu können, muss Kiew Privatisierungen von Staatsunternehmen vorantreiben. „Das Problem ist, dass die westliche Hilfe an ein drastisches Strukturanpassungsprogramm geknüpft wurde, das Sparmaßnahmen, Kürzungen der sozialen Sicherheitsnetze und die Privatisierung von Schlüsselsektoren der Wirtschaft umfasst“, sagt der Ökonom Frederic Mousseau [...]

Das Herzstück sei dabei die Landreform von 2021, die den Ausverkauf des Landes eingeleitet habe. „Der Krieg in der Ukraine steht seit Februar im Mittelpunkt der außenpolitischen und medialen Berichterstattung 2022. Wenig Aufmerksamkeit wurde jedoch einer wichtigen Frage gewidmet, die im Mittelpunkt des Konflikts steht: Wer kontrolliert die landwirtschaftlichen Flächen in dem Land, das als ‚Kornkammer Europas‘ bekannt ist?“, heißt es in einer Studie des Oakland Institute mit dem Titel „Krieg und Diebstahl: Die Übernahme der landwirtschaftlichen Flächen der Ukraine“.

Die Landreform war Teil des Strukturanpassungsprogramms unter der Schirmherrschaft westlicher Finanzinstitutionen, die die proeuropäische Regierung nach der sogenannten Maidan-Revolution im Jahr 2014 auf den Weg gebracht hatte, heißt es in der Studie. „Mit 33 Millionen Hektar Ackerland verfügt die Ukraine über große Teile des fruchtbarsten Ackerlandes der Welt.“ Doch fehlgeleitete Privatisierungen und korrupte Regierungsführung seit den frühen 1990er-Jahren hätten das Land in den Händen einer neuen oligarchischen Klasse konzentriert. Rund 4,3 Millionen Hektar werden demnach im großen Stil landwirtschaftlich genutzt, der Großteil aber, nämlich drei Millionen Hektar, befänden sich in den Händen von nur einem Dutzend großer Agrarunternehmen.

Ausländische Investoren und ukrainische Oligarchen machten gemeinsam gute Geschäfte. Die Fonds stammten vornehmlich aus Europa und Nordamerika, darunter ein in den USA ansässiger Private-Equity-Fonds und der Staatsfonds von Saudi-Arabien. 

Von den Oligarchen kommt dem ukrainischen Staat und auch der Bevölkerung wenig zugute. Neun der zehn größten Landlords in der Ukraine sind der Studie zufolge im Ausland registriert, hauptsächlich in Offshore-Zentren wie Zypern oder Luxemburg. So entledigen sich die Landeigentümer lästiger Steuerzahlungen. Die Firmen sind zum größten Teil an der Börse notiert. Westliche Banken und Investmentfonds kontrollieren dadurch einen erheblichen Anteil ihrer Aktien.

Das Oakland Institute listet die bedeutendsten Investoren auf, die im ukrainischen Agrarsektor Fuß gefasst haben: Die Vanguard Group aus den USA ist nach Blackrock der zweitgrößte Vermögensverwalter der Welt, ebenfalls aus den Vereinigten Staaten sind Kopernik Global Investors und die zu Goldman Sachs gehörende NN Investment Partners mit an Bord. Aus Europa mischen die BNP Asset Management Holding aus Frankreich und die Norges Bank Investment Management, die Norwegens Staatsfonds verwaltet, mit. „Eine Reihe großer amerikanischer Pensionsfonds, Stiftungen und Universitätsfonds sind ebenfalls in ukrainisches Land investiert“, heißt es in der Studie.

„Diese internationale Finanzierung kommt direkt den Oligarchen zugute, von denen einige des Betrugs und der Korruption beschuldigt werden“, kritisiert das Oakland Institute. Die rund acht Millionen ukrainischen Kleinbauern müssten hingegen mit einer begrenzten Menge an Land und Finanzmitteln auskommen, viele stünden bereits am Rande der Armut.

„Die Kleinbauern werden dazu gedrängt, ihr Land an große Eigentümer zu verkaufen“, sagt Mousseau im Gespräch. „Das ist wiederum im Interesse der großen ausländischen Investoren.“ [...]

Doch wieso versprechen sich ausländische Investoren gute Geschäfte von ukrainischen Agrarbetrieben? Schließlich ist das Land auf noch unbestimmte Zeit im Krieg mit Russland. Die Anrainerstaaten protestieren gegen ukrainische Lebensmittelexporte in die EU.

„Für ausländische Investoren ist das Engagement sehr rentabel, da die Agrarunternehmen, an denen sie sich beteiligen, über großen Landbesitz verfügen und in der Lage sind, in großem Maßstab zu produzieren und zu exportieren“, erklärt Mousseau im Gespräch. Ein Beispiel ist der ukrainische Oligarch Jurij Kossjuk, der auch der Hühnchen-König genannt wird, der Chef des Agrarkonzerns Myronivsky Hliboproduct (MHP). Kossjuks Imperium besitzt 60 Prozent der ukrainischen Geflügelproduktion. Die MHP-Betriebe bewirtschaften nicht weniger als 300.000 Hektar Land in der Ukraine.

Weil ukrainische Landwirtschaftsprodukte den europäischen Markt fluten, kommt es zu Protesten. Im Frühjahr demonstrierten polnische Bauern gegen die ukrainischen Getreideeinfuhren, mit denen sie nicht konkurrieren können. Frankreichs Präsident Emmanuel Macron attackierte sogar Kossjuk öffentlich auf einem EU-Gipfel im Februar 2024, weil die MHP-Hühnchen die Existenzen der französischen Bauern bedrohen: „Wir sind nicht daran interessiert, für diesen Mann Geld zu verdienen. Das ist nicht das Ziel, es hilft der Ukraine nicht“, sagte Macron und kritisierte damit die Zollfreiheit für ukrainische Exporte in die EU. Die Einfuhren von ukrainischem Geflügelfleisch in die EU sind nach EU-Angaben zwischen 2022 und 2023 um 47 Prozent gestiegen.

Ein besonders abschreckendes Beispiel für die Pervertierung der Landwirtschaft ist die Ukraine. Die Ukraine hat traditionell die besten Ackerböden Europas. 33 Millionen Hektar Schwarzerde. Das ist etwa ein Drittel der Ackerfläche der Europäischen Union. In der Sowjetunion wurde das Land von großen Staatsbetrieben bewirtschaftet. Nach der Wende verteilte der Staat das Land an Bauern, die auf kleineren Parzellen arbeiteten. Im Jahr 2001 verfügte die ukrainische Regierung, dass dieses Land nicht an ausländische Investoren verkauft werden darf. Doch die bereits erwähnte unheilige Koalition aus Weltbank, Internationalem Währungsfonds und Europäischer Entwicklungsbank übte erpresserischen Druck auf die ukrainische Regierung aus, dieses Verkaufsverbot im Zuge der berüchtigten „Strukturanpassungen“ sofort aufzuheben. Im Windschatten des Krieges begann der große Landraub in der Ukraine. Westliche Agrarkonzerne und Banken können per Pacht Land in der Ukraine erwerben. Die verbliebenen Staatsbetriebe werden im Eiltempo privatisiert. Heute gehört das ukrainische Ackerland bereits den üblichen Verdächtigen: Monsanto, Cargill, Dupont, Vanguard, Kopernik Global Investors, die zu Goldman Sachs gehörende NN Investment Partners Holdings und Norges Bank Investment Management.

Aus Sicht westlicher Investoren ist es ein Glücksfall, dass sich die Ukraine durch den Krieg gegen Russland mit 120 Milliarden Dollar verschuldet hat. Und dass die Ukraine nun bereitwillig ihr gesamtes Tafelsilber an westliche Banken verschenkt. Schon Ende 2022 hatte der ukrainische Präsident Selenski mit Blackrock-Chef Larry Fink ein sogenanntes Wiederaufbauprogramm vereinbart, und Fink erklärte auf dem Weltwirtschaftsgipfel in Davos, er und seine Freunde würden die Ukraine mit westlichem Kapital „überschwemmen“ und sie zu einem „Leuchtfeuer der Hoffnung für die Kraft des Kapitalismus“ machen. Fink will eine Billion Dollar in die Hand nehmen, um die Ukraine auf Linie zu bringen. Die verbliebenen selbständigen Bauern wurden inzwischen zum Militärdienst eingezogen. Wenn sie lebend zurückkehren, kann es sein, dass ihnen ihr Hof nicht mehr gehört.

Gleichzeitig begann der Frontalangriff auf die Bauern in der Europäischen Union.

In dieser Folge sprechen Dr. Karin Kneissl und Flavio von Witzleben über das neue Hilfspaket der USA und Großbritanniens an die Ukraine, das weitere Waffenlieferungen an Kiew vorsieht.
