how to keep a journal

I've always liked to write. So, keeping a journal is perfect for me; I can write about everything I'd like to write about, and I won't have to worry if it'll be interesting for others to read (that's something I do need to consider when writing a blogpost), because my journal is just for me. I don't really use my journal as a diary, though. It's not really secret, or anything. When someone sees it, lying around in my room, they can read it if they'd like to.
The thing is, I've been struggling with the issue "what should I write about?". Because it's not that simple, writing about whatever you'd like to write about. I mean, I'm not going to write about my day, or what I had for dinner. That would be lame, and there's no fun in writing about just another day at school. A while ago, I read a post on Reef Magazine, with some prompts to use for writing a journal. It really inspired me, and I have been writing in my journal a lot more often since I read that post. I wanted to inspire you the way Reef Magazine inspired me, so here are some things you could write about in your journal (these are mostly my own ideas by the way, I'm not just copying the post I read) :)

write about someone you're a huge fan of. It's easy to write about someone you love/are passionate about, and it keeps you busy for a while. It's also fun to write about, because you can fangirl about someone as much as you want without making your friends crazy.
write about your favorite TV show (or your favorite movie/book); write about your favorite character, your OTP, why the show is the best show ever and stuff like that.
you could also do a tag. It's fun to answer questions, and it will be nice to read when you're older.
make a list. It could be a list about your current favorites, your wish list, what you love about (....) or your worst experiences with (....) or your favorite songs. Whatever you'd like to make a list of.
you can also write down some quotes. There are a lot of beautiful quotes on We Heart It, but I often forget about them after I've hearted them. If you write them down in your journal, you probably won't forget about them. Click here to view my collection "quotes & words" on We Heart It :)
print some beautiful pictures (from Pinterest or We Heart It) and paste them into your journal. Write next to them why you love the pictures so much. A journal doesn't have to be something you only write in. It should be a view into who you are (omg this is getting deep guys), and sometimes it's just easier to express the way you're feeling with pictures instead of words. Is it? I don't know, actually. It just seemed like the best way to explain why you should paste pictures in your journal haha.
write down some goals for yourself. It may help you not to forget about them and achieve your goals.
write about an experience which made you feel intensely happy :)
write down the things you wish you would've said when (....). We all know the feeling, right? You're having a conversation, someone asks you a question, and you answer. But then, two seconds later, you're like "oh, I wish I would've said (....)".
write about the way you feel. But not like "I'm happy today", no, write like: "I feel like dancing in a colorful dress to 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams".
I hope this inspired you!

hi! so on the 23rd im leaving for my europe trip w/ my family to france, spain, italy, and switzerland. im planning on carrying a journal with me to record my experiences while in those countries and the trip itself in general. problem is, i dont know what to write! can you give me ideas on what to write as in like did visiting this place make you happy, what were the people like; anything similar to those! sorry this isnt specific enough/good grammar
Ahhh, sorry I didn’t get around to answering this question sooner…lots of time-sensitive ones have been sitting in my inbox. Whoops.
Anyway, yes! Travel journals! I love traveling. I love journaling about traveling.
Ideas:
where did you go? what did you see?
what did you eat? did you fall in love with the food? the desserts?
what was the best meal you had there?
most beautiful sights?
most unique experiences?
cultural differences that have surprised you?
nice people you met
where did you stay/sleep?
what is it like during the daytime? what about nightlife?
sketch a little reference map
glue in receipts, ticket stubs, etc
historical context for some of the old buildings/sights — what did you learn about them? did you go on any tours?
what did the people around you wear?
what fun activities did you participate in?
best/coolest thing you did there
did you ever get mistaken for a local instead of a tourist?
bits of the language that you may have learned during your travels
More creative ideas:
Take your journal and explore. Intend to get lost. Take random turns, wander the side streets, find a place that looks interesting: a cafe, a museum, an old church, a park. Sit with your journal and record your observations.
Sit somewhere and people-watch. Write down the interesting things they do that you don’t see in your home country.
Find a memento at each place to collect and paste in your journal — something flat and easy to find in different cities, like a leaf or a flower, a metro/subway ticket, a map, a page from a guidebook, etc. Try to get a whole set.
If you could come back to this place again, would you? Would you come by yourself? With a friend? Family? A lover? What would you do if you had the freedom to explore it completely?
Pick a random person and invent a life story for them. Write it down.
If there’s one thing you really love to eat/drink that you can find in most places (coffee, desserts/pastries, bread, pizza), try tasting some at every city where you stop. Rate each one and record your responses about it.

Empty Notebooks

If you’re like us, you probably have multiple empty notebooks lying around and few ideas on how to fill them. So here’s a compilation of ideas, that hopefully will inspire you to fill those notebooks. Some may seem rather obvious, but it doesn’t harm to cover the basics.
1. Bullet Journal
For ideas on how to start your bullet journal have a look at our 2019 setups here and here.
2. Recipe Collections
A place to write down your favourite/most used recipes is useful. Having to search through various different websites/apps trying to remember what that one recipe was called is a pain. If you don’t have a notebook with dividers use sticky bookmarks to mark what type of recipe each page contains (e.g. meat, veggie, vegan, deserts etc.)
3. Dream Diary
4. Book/Reading Journal
A place to write down what books you’ve read and what you’ve thought. This journal is also a good way to keep track of what books you have borrowed or loaned, and when books by your favourite author are due to be released.
5. Finances
A notebook solely for a log of what you’ve spent or earned is very helpful in organising yourself and adulting.
6. Diary/Journal/Brain Dump
A place to write down thoughts and feelings.
7. Miscellaneous Notebook
A small notebook that can fit into any bag (and maybe a pocket) that you can take anywhere with you to write down anything that may pop into your head, shopping lists and ideas.
8. Lists
This could be a place where you keep shopping lists, to-do lists, favourite movies or tv shows you are currently watching.
9. Blog Posts
Ideas for blog posts can strike at any time or they can take a while to form, a notebook is a perfect way to keep those thoughts organised.
10. Stories/Ideas
Writers know that inspiration can strike at the strangest of moments and sometimes those ideas aren’t needed in that point of the narrative. A notebook keeps those ideas safe until needed.

I first just want to say I love your blog!!I saw (and loved) a post about using notebooks, but do you have any suggestions about half-used notebooks that have various handicaps (no cover, bent spirals, few pages, etc.) that I don't necessarily want to use to keep something super important? A lot of the things from the other post seemed like things I'd want to keep and reference in nice notebooks and stuff, and the ones I have aren't :( Thanks!
Thank you!! And THAT is an excellent question. Here are some thoughts:
Practice handwriting, lettering, or calligraphy
If you’re trying to improve your handwriting or cursive or calligraphy by writing things over and over and over again (and probably making lots of mistakes in the process), you don’t want to display all that repetitive stuff in a nice journal, right? You want to write in the nice journal after you’ve perfected it. (If you’re interested in this kind of thing, you might like the Elian Script — check it out!)
Rip out the pages and use it for something else
Paper airplanes, passing notes in class, love letters…that paper shouldn’t get wasted. Use it instead for origami or papercraft, practice writing coded messages, or think up something equally inventive but useful.
Doodle, draw, sketch
Especially if you’re an amateur artist, there’s no need to go out and buy a fancy sketchbook if you feel self-conscious about filling it up with your drawings. Practice simple things first. Try to fill up notebook pages with various types of eyes, or hands, or expressions.
Keep a recommendation notebook
When someone recommends a book you must read or a movie you must see, write it down in a notebook! It doesn’t matter how pretty the notebook looks, since you only have to keep the information long enough to actually check out that cool new band or remember to buy tickets for some comedy group that's performing later.
Write fiction or fanfiction that you’re going to type up later anyways
I write fiction, and tend to just scrawl ideas and passages down in whatever notebook is nearest. I don’t care about making it look neat and presentable, since I only need my handwriting to be decipherable enough to type it up later. Once it’s saved on the computer, I can get rid of the physical copy.
Conclusion
Basically, ratty or broken notebooks are perfect for practicing things when you’re an amateur and you don’t need to worry about making it look presentable. If you get a great idea for something you want to put in a regular notebook, maybe give it a trial run in an old, bent notebook first — if you get tired of your idea after three days, then it probably wouldn’t have lasted long anyway…and now you’ve saved your nice notebook for something better.

As I revisit the past topics on my book, I realized how educational theories can be applied to improve learning. For instance, Ausubel's Subsumption Theory is effective for learning a new topic because it encourages students and teachers to connect this new topic to past topics already known.

I got one! Notebooks that say world domination plans (ok I have two) and signs that say keep out! Chaos beyond this point. Enter at your own risk. (Then like in the distance) “GET OFF THE CEILING!”
I would buy hundreds of those notebooks ngl
