[T]hey frequently transgress the spatial boundaries imposed by humans to organize and govern spaces [âŚ]. [W]etlands spread out and do not conform to the straight and consistent lines between land and water. [âŚ] The smells of wetlands, of decomposing vegetation, of sulphur, were [âŚ] off-putting for [British] settlers in Aotearoa [âŚ]. Soon after the British-led military invasion of the Waikato region in 1863 and the confiscation of 480 000 ha of Maori lands, [...] [t]he âgreat swamp region of the Waikatoâ was described as a picture of âdesolationâ and âstagnant waterâ where the âground quaked and quivered beneathâ one's feet, and opened up unexpectedly to suck people down into âhorrible depths of [the] black, stinking bogâ. [âŚ] The omnipresent dangers of âdamp vapour arisingâ were deemed âhighly prejudicial to residentsâ health throughout Aotearoa. [âŚ] The âtepid swampsâ, it was reported, poisoned the âotherwise pure airâ [âŚ].â The Napier Swamp Nuisance Act enabled local government officials to âfill inâ (meaning to drain, establish levees, and build up the soil) any parcel of land deemed a muddy watery odorous ânuisanceâ without the consent of the landowners. [âŚ] [P]oliticians suggested [that Aotearoa] be decontaminated through strategic interventions to remove and remake wetlands [âŚ]. Such ideas, which fused medical and socio-economic theories, justified indigenous dispossession and drainage works [âŚ].

On 24 December 1928 Italyâs fascist regime launched [âŚ] a fourteen-year national land reclamation programme aimed at [...] Italy's âdeath inducingâ swamps [âŚ]. The Pontine Marshes, a marshland spreading across 75,000 hectares south of Rome was given top priority [âŚ]. [T]he fascist regime used an extensive propaganda machinery to promote the programme [âŚ] as a heroic quest for producing an 'ideal' [...] landscape [...]. Newsreels documented step by step the struggle [âŚ], with Mussolini himself often featuring, overseeing the project, or even working the land. [âŚ] Nearly 3,000 newsreels and many documentaries were produced [...]. This was [...] [among] Italy's most important public works project[s] [...], a transformative enterprise that [...] would engage with an "untamed" natural environment and [force] it into a sanitised version of ideal fascist nature. [...] [The marshes] were linked to the idea of wilderness, [...] undisciplined, uncivilised, and unproductive [...]. This policy [âŚ] aimed [âŚ] [at] removing âunhealthyâ [...] areas, through the process of sventramento (disembowelment). [âŚ] The construction of New Towns [...] in the Pontine Marshes [...] aimed at producing the 'ideal' settlement [...]. [These newly constructed] municipal buildings often boasted prominent towers [....] reigning supreme over the Marshes [...].

[I]n Recife in the Northeast of Brazil [...] the transformation of the city was predicated on [...] [a] notion of whiteness that required the enclosure of wet, amphibious space to make dry land. [...] Racialised groups â of black, indigenous, and mixed heritages â and the houses, marshlands, and mangroves where they lived, were subject to eradication [...]. [F]rom the 1920s to 1950s, during the rise to hegemony in Brazil of [a form of eugenicist, modernist nationalism,] [...] [the] idea's heartland [was] the Northeast. [...] Recife is also a centre of Brazilian black culture [...]. One of the key sites in Brazil's slave and sugar trades [...], the city was [...] [a] hub. Many of these people lived in what came to be called mocambos, a word that designated an informal dwelling, but came to mean much more. [...]. Mocambos were seen as [...] the place where exploited labour was kept out of sight. [...] They were also [...] the inheritance [...] of the quilombo - the community of escaped slaves. [...] In July 1939, the proto-fascist administration [...] of Agamenon MagalhĂŁes, put in place by GetĂşlio Vargas' repressive Estado Novo, launched the Liga Social Contra o Mocambo (Social League Against the Mocambo, LSCM). The League emerged out of a tellingly named âCrusadeâ against the mocambos. [...] Mocambos were characterised as repellent, unhygienic, and dangerous: âthe mocambo which repels. The mocambo which is the tomb of a race ⌠a sombre landscape of human misery ⌠which mutilates human energy and annuls work" [...]. These were the decades of the embranquecimento of the Brazilian population through public policies of immigration, miscegenation, and sterilisation [...]. This white supremacist ideology was inseparably a politics of nature. MagalhĂŁes wrote [in 1939]: The idle life, the life that the income of the mocambos provides [...]. It is a life of stagnant water. ⌠[that] generates in its breast the venom of larvae, which are the enemies of life. Enemies of life, as are the mocambos and the sub-soil of cities, where the polluted waters contaminate pure waters [...]. Attempts to âcleanseâ the city functioned through a distinct process: aterramento, the making of land. [...] Or as 1990s mangue beat [mangrove beat] musicians [...] put it, âthe fastest way also to obstruct and evacuate the soul of a city like Recife is to kill its rivers and fill up its estuariesâ [...].

Michael P. Hill at NewscastStudio:
Multiple sources have indicated to NewscastStudio that Allen Media Group will begin the process of âhubbingâ weather forecasts for its local stations from the Atlanta facilities of its Weather Channel property. The group, which owns around 36 stations in mid-sized to small markets across the country, has already been quietly cutting a variety of jobs in recent days, including managers, anchors and forecasters. The next step, according to multiple insider sources who requested anonymity because the plans are not public yet, is to start producing weather segments for stations from The Weather Channel. Christina Burkhart, a forecaster at WJRT in Flint, Michigan, has also gone public with claims that her stationâs parent company will cut âall local meteorologists company-wide.â She posted a message saying so as a public Facebook post.
NewscastStudio has reached out to a general information box for Allen Media Group for comment. The company does not list a public email address for media inquiries and its âpress releaseâ section of its corporate website is listed as âcoming soon.â Itâs not clear what the exact timeframe for these changes might be if they take place; there is an âon-camera meteorologistâ listing on the Weather Channelâs careers page, but itâs not clear what specific role this might be for and itâs also possible the network might produce them using existing staffers. This isnât the first time that a station group has attempted to âhubâ its weather operations. Other groups, including Sinclair Media Group, have tried it in the past and some stations have also experimented with having a forecaster from a sister station handle forecasting segments on a day when no other local staffers are available due to illness, time off or staff shortages.
[...] Overall, cutting forecasters at every station would likely come in at about 100 jobs nationwide, assuming each property has at least two to three weather staffers. Thanks to advances in remote production and work setups, the notion of producing local weather forecasts hundreds or thousands of miles a way is more feasible than ever. Computer systems already exist that allow anyone with a computer terminal and compatible software access near real-time maps, conditions and other data for any market in the U.S. Of course, creating a weather hub does mean that talent likely wonât be as familiar with local happenings, pronunciations, geography and weather patterns, though at least some of that knowledge could be transferred. Itâs also likely that forecasters at the hub would be assigned to appear on the same group of stations as often as possible in order to build rapport with viewers.
Allen Media Group stations are eliminating weather departments by hubbing it out. This is a very bad sign, as lots of local area weather expertise has been jettisoned.

I just listened to the podcast interview you posted here, and the question you answered about Alexandria intrigued me! I always thought that the city Alexander left was smaller and not as relevant as it would eventually become. Could we then say that the Ptolemies carried out (probably due to their own interests as sovereigns, but still) Alexander's will by turning Alexandria into an international hub in the Mediterranean?
Alexander merely "cut" the lines of what would become Alexandria (e.g., the basic layout of it). He never lived to see it built. There's some debate as to how much input he really had, but I'm disinclined to dismiss a very real interest on his part in city design. He was Aristotles' student. :-)
I do think he had big plans for the place. So in that respect, Ptolemy (and his successors) carried out what I believe he wanted, including the library. Supposedly, he was inspired after being shown the ruins of Ashurbanipal's Library when they passed Nineveh on the way to fight Darius at Gaugamela. He wanted to do the same, but with all Greek knowledge. (E.g., collect it in one place.) Again, some have doubted the idea of the library was ever his, but it doesn't strike me as an un-Alexander-ish notion.

Introduction
Welcome, to my little corner of the internet. My name is Aurelia, and I'm a Hellenic Polytheist (Reconstruction). My goal here is to help bring resources and knowledge to beginners, or those who are simply curious about the beautiful ancient greek religion.
A bit about me:
I have a degree in Biomedical Engineering, and am currently studying for a degree in Ancient Religions.
I am 23 years old, and have been a Hellenic Polytheist for the better part of 4 years now.
Though only being a worshipper for 4 years, I began my journey with the Gods when I was around 8. I can elaborate further in a different post, but long story short, Apollon came to me when I needed it most, and when the god I grew up believing in did not.
Blog content:
Expect to see posts about things ranging from simple beginner topics, to deep diving into aspects of the religion. (praying, offerings, sacred spaces, the Gods, history, book reviews, resources, etc). I am also currently working on creating a Notion hub full of anything and everything you can think of, which will also have lots of academic and non-academic resources. It's definitely going to take a while but I'll post it once its deemed good enough for viewing.
Feel free to leave your musings, my ask box is always open!

I want to formally write up my digital note-taking system as someone with autism and ADHD at some point, complete with screenshots. I've always been trying to reduce it and simplify it but I've accepted that it's always going to be difficult for other people to implement because I'm obsessed with organization and have been refining the system over years.
I've been reading Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte and have loosely adapted the PARA concept (Projects, Areas, Resource, Archives). I think it's brilliant to make notes more actionable. I want to organize such that it's easier to access notes most useful to me, and less-relevant-and-immediately-actionable notes like resources and finished projects are kept but neatly put away for later use and not cluttering up the space.
Basically, most of my personal and reference notes are in Notion. There I keep a list of things like my goals, my spending, my project planning, and reference materials I've collected over the years related to things like health, career development, recipes, etc.
However, Notion is a clunky experience on mobile. There is also no offline support - well, not proper offline support, anyway. That's because it's fundamentally a web application.
For quick notes I take on the go, reminders, and shopping lists, I use Google Keep. I can't understate how I haven't found a better app for this. Imagine a dynamic sticky notes board that syncs across devices and is easy to add and remove from. I can send notes to myself in the future in less than a minute and it basically runs my life. Every so often, I copy down important notes from Google Keep into Notion. I think basically everyone should use Google Keep, but especially for people with ADHD. Often we think of things in the moment, but they aren't relevant. I always jot down something I remember and send a reminder to myself when I can take action with it.
Finally, as much as I think Notion is great for note-taking, I actually use Obsidian for any deeper knowledge databases. I'm going to experiment and use Obsidian as my main school notes hub when I go back to school. I have a personal Obsidian wiki for programming. Obsidian is essentially offline Notion with less emphasis on databases. The linking between pages and seeing a map of how concepts are related to one another is extremely powerful.
And although I don't use it as often, I really like Notability on my iPad with an Apple Pencil. I use it for making digitized diagrams and as a study tool. The act of writing over typing codifies things in my memory.
I used to use Microsoft OneNote a lot. I miss when it was free. I appreciated how flexible it was. I used a tablet to write directly on the pages. However, I found that I hated formatting in it over time, and I preferred using Markdown as it's more universal. (Even my resume is written in LaTeX. I used to code every assignment in HTML/CSS because I wanted perfect formatting.) Overall, OneNote was clunky and difficult to keep consistently formatted.
On top of my digital system, I have a physical bullet journal and whiteboards. I think having multiple spaces that remind of of my tasks and ideas and to jot them down, and then moving them around helps me remember them. I could streamline the process a bit, but I really don't like compromising physical note-taking. I'm a firm believer in physical and non-cloud backups of information. I don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket and rely on Internet infrastructure. I also want to feel grounded. There are some hybrid digital/physical notebooks I might look into to keep the process simple, but I've been working with this system fine.

We will discuss the significance of the art market in todayâs society and shed light on the fascinating world it inhabits in this blog post. From the ascent of computerized craftsmanship to the development of new business sectors, we will dig into the steadily advancing scene that characterizes this enrapturing domain.

Relevance to History : The workmanship market has a rich and celebrated history, going back hundreds of years. It has been a major influence on cultural movements, heritage preservation, and societal values. The Art Market has served as a catalyst for artistic expression and cultural dialogue throughout history, from the Renaissance, when wealthy patrons commissioned masterpieces to the modern era, when artists challenge established norms. Contemporary art trends continue to be influenced by the historical significance of the market, as artists draw inspiration from the past and push the boundaries of creativity in the present.
Ecosystem Diversity :Â The craftsmanship market incorporates a great many members, including specialists, gatherers, displays, exhibition halls, closeout houses, and workmanship fairs. Additionally, art fairs foster connections between artists, collectors, and enthusiasts by serving as hubs for networking and discovery. The art market moves forward thanks to the vibrant ecosystem created by this interconnected network of participants.
Opportunities for investments :Â Past its innovative charm, the craftsmanship market offers convincing venture open doors. Works of art can see the value in esteem over the long run, making them appealing resources for financial backers. Even though the market can be speculative and volatile, knowledgeable research can lead to profitable outcomes. Art has become easier to invest in thanks to notable auction sales and the rise of online platforms. Additionally, the increasing recognition of art as a tangible and diversifiable asset in a well-rounded investment portfolio is highlighted by the growing interest from institutional investors and the rise of art investment funds.
NFTs and digital art :Â The art market has undergone unprecedented transformations thanks to the digital age. In recent years, digital art, often made with software or new technologies, has gained a lot of popularity. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have arisen as a progressive device for purchasing, selling, and claiming computerized fine arts, giving craftsmen new roads for adaptation. Through the use of blockchain technology, NFTs provide exclusive ownership verification and provenance verification, opening up a brand-new market for digital creations. The democratization of access to the art market for creators and collectors worldwide has resulted from the fusion of art and technology, which has sparked innovative discussions and challenged conventional notions of art ownership.
The art market is still a fascinating place that brings together creative endeavors, investment opportunities, and advancements in technology. Its verifiable importance, various biological systems, and developing scene make it a powerful space that constantly adjusts to cultural movements. The boundaries of artistic expression have been pushed to their limits by digital art and NFTs, and investment opportunities continue to pique the interest of discerning investors and collectors.
As the craftsmanship market keeps on developing, it will without a doubt shape social stories, rethink proprietorship ideas, and rouse ages to come. Whether you are a craftsman, gatherer, or devotee, the workmanship market gives a charming jungle gym that mirrors the always changing woven artwork of human innovativeness.

The Library Prescription: An Annotated Bibliography
This annotated bibliography pertains to the potential effect of public libraries being healthcare hubs for rural communities in Appalachia. To reiterate, using the research template from The Craft of Research (Booth 46), the purpose is to find the potential role of public libraries concerning healthcare disparities in rural Appalachia. Trends in library services to promote health literacy can improve healthcare disparities. Awareness of the importance of rural libraries can be vital in narrowing the healthcare gap between rural and metropolitan areas. Sources in this annotated bibliography meet the criteria: published within the past fifteen years, publicly available, written by accredited experts with prior related experience, and have results applicable to rural communities and libraries. Appalachian communities have a presence likened to that of a ghost town concerning the place they hold in political prioritization. Unique challenges face rural communities, such as limited or no access to healthcare and broadband internet. In the absence of medical advancements and hospitals, public libraries are an untapped medical resource for community members, contrary to the notion of libraries being incapable of impacting disparities in a community.Â
Annotated References
Flaherty, Mary Grace and David Miller. âRural Public Libraries as Community Change Agents.â Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, vol. 57, no. 2, Association for Library and Information Science Education, 2016, pp. 143-150. JSTOR, 10.12783/issn.2328-2967/57/2/6.
To showcase ways libraries with limited funds and resources can contribute to the health and betterment of rural communities, a team implements two experiments with patrons of the Farmville Public Library in North Carolina. A limited number of patrons use supplied pedometers to encourage a more active lifestyle, and another set of patrons utilizes an online health assessment tool. Both methods return positive feedback and results, supporting this bibliographyâs main focus with evidence of public librariesâ potential role in advancing public health with limited funds.
Mary Grace Flaherty, assistant professor for the University of North Carolina, and David Miller, Farmville Public Library director, possess the experience and knowledge necessary to conduct and evaluate library science research and patron feedback. This study is seven years old and still relatively recent, concerning the similar state of rural public library use associated with healthcare trends. Sources published less than 15 years ago retain information related to this bibliographyâs focus. The primary purpose of this study is to ascertain the level of engagement patrons have with library services using an experimental online health assessment tool and an in-person pedometer program while evaluating the success of each service, reiterating the focus of public libraries being potential healthcare hubs for Appalachia, a large region consisting of multiple rural communities like Farmville, North Carolina. The study results are in a common language, and contextual background information is provided for a general audience, contributing to the intended general audience of this bibliography. With help, Farmville Public Library launched a marathon, with almost a quarter of marathon participants previously involved in the experimental pedometer study, indicating the programâs success. The positive results of the online health assessment tool rely more on subjective opinion than fact or concrete evidence. Most patrons report weight loss in a follow-up assessment and adopt healthier habits. However, these results are less trustworthy than the pedometer program as they rely heavily on unaccredited reporting by patrons. Even though the online health assessment tool results are less trustworthy than the pedometer program, it does not entirely discredit this study or the conclusion of the results. Counter-arguments are not included or necessary for this study, as the purpose is to retain and evaluate the results of two experiments specific to one rural library, which can apply to other rural public libraries.
Lenstra, Noah and Christine DâArpa. âFood Justice in the Public Library.â The International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion, vol. 3, no. 4, 2019, pp. 45-67. JSTOR, 10.33137/ijidi.v3i4.33010.
Using strategies employed by multiple public libraries addressing food insecurity, a team investigates the potential impact of public libraries. Multiple research methods utilized over two years lead to a hopeful and open conclusion with room to expand after future extensive study. Food security and nutrition are aspects of healthcare, and this adds a specific glimpse into the potential role of public libraries and their applicability to rural libraries in Appalachia.
Leading the investigation is Noah Lenstra, a professor at the University of North Carolina who also serves in the U.S. Public Library Associationâs Health Initiative Advisory Group (Lenstra 48). His research experience and knowledge give this investigation authority, and the employed research methods are appropriate for his particular focus and give cause for a valid conclusion. Published in 2019 with two years of research, this investigation is relevant to the potential relationship between public libraries and healthcare access, notably concerning food and nutrition. The scope of this study is extensive, not focusing on rural libraries or Appalachia. However, the research still contributes to this bibliographyâs focus as it hypothesizes the role of libraries in tackling health disparities in each local community. The primary purpose of this study is to analyze how public libraries currently engage with their communities concerning food and nutrition by employing data tracking through internet searches and utilizing feedback from library professionals currently employing relative strategies for higher community engagement. This reiterates the focus on libraries being potential healthcare hubs in rural Appalachia by showcasing strategies already being used by library professionals. Although this particular topic is void of an ample supply of research and the investigation is broad, covering public libraries in urban, rural, and major metropolitan settings makes the results not ethically applicable as representation for rural libraries in Appalachia as of yet, or even libraries in general due to further research necessary for more concrete findings. However, this investigation does not lose credibility as public librariesâ potential to bridge the gap concerning health disparities is still a relevant argument. Everyday language is utilized throughout the study, with cited information as background providing context. The research methods rely on finding different strategies library staff employ to combat food insecurity and encourage nutrition in their communities. By employing data tracking over two years, in every instance, a combination of set keywords is searched, the authors are alerted, combined with the feedback from library professionals, is not purely authoritative but is credibly inconclusive. Concrete results could not be attained through this investigation, but instead formulates a valid argument and adds to the research foundation into the role of public libraries and those in rural Appalachia. The conclusion of this study was respectfully countered concerning its soundness as there are not enough research and statistical findings to support the cause-and-effect relationship between library programming and health disparities in each libraryâs local community. This is reiterated in conclusion by the authors, aware of the lack of research on this topic, which, again, does not discredit the findings but is not enough to ethically state a definitive cause-and-effect relationship.
Mehra, Bharat et al. âScenarios of Health Engagement Experiences and Health Justice in Rural Libraries.â The International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion, vol. 3, no. 3, 2019, pp. 56-87. JSTOR, 10.33137/ijidi.v3i3.32963.
Part of a planning grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (Mehra 56), a team of researchers led by Bharat Mehra, a professor for the University of Alabama and EBSCO Endowed Chair, utilizes feedback from 15 rural librarians to bring awareness to the current plight of rural libraries and examples of employed strategies using limited resources through conducted interviews. Filtered through data analysis and evaluation, the scope of community engagement is far-reaching and vital for the overall health of their communities. Both research methods and results support the focus of this bibliography by providing insight and context.Â
Bharat Mehra is a professor at the University of Alabama and EBSCO Endowed Chair in social justice. His research focuses mainly on social justice pertaining to library science for bringing empowerment to those in underserved communities. With his knowledge and experience, this study, formulated to bring awareness to the needs and plight of rural librarians in Appalachia, uses an authoritative voice paired with trustworthy research methods. This study was conducted four years prior, which still holds relevant research results considering the current plight of rural librarians. Sources published less than 15 years ago retain information about this bibliographyâs focus. The primary purpose of this study is to bring awareness to the needs of rural librarians, realized through scenarios and data evaluation by conducting interviews with 15 rural librarians and the different strategies employed to engage their communities using limited resources. This reiterates the focus on public libraries being potential healthcare hubs for Appalachia. Even though the sample size is not on a grand scale, participants are specifically chosen to represent rural librarians with experience in decision-making. The case study and results utilize ordinary language and jargon, potentially hindering some individuals from fully grasping the intended hypothesis and results. Counter-arguments are not included in this study, as the purpose is to bring awareness to the current dilemma posed to rural librarians and the different creative strategies they employ to engage their communities using limited resources. Counter-arguments are not necessary for this study to be successful, therefore bringing value to the focus of this bibliography. This case studyâs results depend on informed opinion being utilized as concrete statistics. The purpose of this study and hypothesis depend on informed opinion interwoven with concrete facts and evidence being involved in the background to provide context. The needs of rural librarians and libraries are not based on fact but instead on educated opinion.
Mehra, Bharat et al. âWhat is the Value of LIS Education? A Qualitative Study of the Perspective of Tennesseeâs Rural Libraries.â Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, vol. 52, no. 4, 2011, pp. 271-273. JSTOR, http://www.jstor.org/stable/41308903.
Led by Bharat Mehra, a professor for the University of Alabama and EBSCO Endowed Chair, is a case study utilizing qualitative research from the feedback of 44 participants, all professionals involved in library settings of rural Tennessee. Interviews and focus groups are the main research methods to acquire a substantial amount of feedback concerning the needs of public libraries in rural Tennessee related to the informed opinions of all participants concerning their educational background in library science. The findings of this case study reflect the high need for healthcare and educational resources, which overlap with the necessary prioritization of computer literacy and broadband internet access (Mehra 272). Library professionals in rural libraries of Tennessee will potentially benefit from library science curriculum including âmanagerial and administrative topicsâŚpublic servicesâŚand technical services (Mehra 274).â These results help reflect the hypothesis of this bibliography and add value to its focus.     Â
Bharat Mehraâs research focuses on social justice pertaining to library science for empowering those in underserved communities. With his authority leading the study, formulated to speculate on the necessity of library science education for rural librarians through the needs of rural libraries, the research methods employed are relevant and capable of providing sound results. This study was conducted twelve years prior, which still holds relevance to the issue of rural libraries and aids the focus of this bibliography. The primary purpose of this study is to ascertain the necessity of a more thorough library science education for library professionals based on participant experience and the needs of the communities in rural Tennessee. For this bibliography, thorough is defined as well-rounded pertaining to the scope of areas, such as managerial, computer literacy, and cultural studies, and inclusive to the special needs and unique circumstances rural libraries face. This reiterates the focus on public libraries being potential healthcare hubs in light of the lack of medical professionals and spaces in rural Appalachia. The results add depth by also focusing on the educational experiences of all 44 participants and how a more thorough education can further aid library professionals to help bridge the healthcare gap in Appalachia by expanding their knowledge before working in a rural library. Both common language and jargon are used throughout the case study. However, mainly common language is utilized, which does not greatly hinder a general audience. The primary purpose and findings are not countered. However, it is reminded that results cannot be ethically related to all library venues and libraries in settings other than rural Tennessee. A disadvantage concerning the hypothesis of public libraries being potential healthcare hubs in Appalachia is the need for more relevant documentation and research. However, multiple studies based on specific feedback from different regions of Appalachia having similar findings prove to be relevant to each other thus far and valuable pertaining to this bibliographyâs general focus. This case studyâs results depend on the informed opinion of library professionals and staff. The purpose of this study is to highlight the participantsâ experiences as they relate their educational background to the needs of their communities.
Philbin, Morgan at el. âPublic Libraries: A Community-Level Resource to Advance Population Health.â Journal of Community Health, vol. 44, no. 1, Springer, 2019, pp. 192-199. JSTOR, 10.1007/s10900-018-0547-4.Â
The range and types of programming employed by different public libraries related to health and healthcare are reviewed. By adapting Marmotâs theoretical framework (Philbin 193) to public library services, an investigation is conducted to create an overview and bring awareness to the potential of public libraries as healthcare hubs. The unique challenges faced by rural public libraries are addressed, applying to public libraries in Appalachia, and the authorsâ premises relate to the focus of this bibliography.
Morgan Philbin, assistant professor at Columbia University, teamed with other researchers from Columbia University and the University of North Carolina to perform this review. Philbin has experience in the sociomedical sciences adding value to her authority concerning the potential impact of public libraries on healthcare disparities in underserved communities. Published in 2019, this review showcases a general overview of public librariesâ current role in bringing healthcare services to their communities. However, there is no statistical value of the impact of healthcare services and programming performed by public libraries, which is also addressed in the review. The scope of this study is broad, showcasing programs of public libraries in different areas, states, and socioeconomic settings. Although rural public libraries are addressed and included in the overview, it is still relevant pertaining to the focus of rural public libraries being potential healthcare hubs, bridging the healthcare disparities gap between Appalachia and metropolitan and urban areas. The primary purpose of this review is to formulate a collection of current healthcare programming trends in public libraries across the United States to bring awareness of the libraryâs potential concerning healthcare disparities and possibly help trigger other researchers to conduct more investigations and case studies of the same topic. While the focus of this bibliography narrows to Appalachia, the focus of this bibliography and the focus of the evaluated review are identical. Ordinary language is utilized throughout the review with little to no jargon, and background information is included to provide context. Using different medical online databases, the authors searched for peer-reviewed research on contributions that public libraries make to their communities as they pertain to healthcare access, addiction, stress, food, early life, the social gradient, social exclusion, work, disaster relief, and social support (Philbin 3-6). There are no results found in the concrete or statistical sense of the word, as that is not the purpose of this review, and it is not ethically possible to formulate a conclusion with that kind of authority due to the lack of research on this topic. However, even though the impact of public library healthcare programming cannot currently be measured, the premise of this review stating that public libraries have further potential to contribute to the health of their communities based on the current range of library programming is supported by the findings of this review. No counter-arguments are presented in this review as they are not necessary for the success of the reviewâs purpose. The counter-argument of the focus of this bibliography would assume the grounds of public libraries being unable to contribute to improving healthcare access and overall health in their local communities. However, further research is needed to speculate on the impact to support either argument correctly. This review reflects the range of library programming concerning healthcare and health to support the conclusion, which is an informed opinion, as opposed to an evaluation of statistical findings, as there is not enough research to make such a conclusion.
Racki, Elizabeth and Bok Jeong. âThe Effect of Public Library Programs on Health Services Utilization.â Journal of Health and Human Service Administration, vol. 43, no. 2, SPAEF, 2020, pp. 131-153. JSTOR, 10.37808/jhhsa.43.2.4.
Using regression analysis, the impact of public library programming on the decrease or increase of hospitalizations and health insurance coverage is found. Covering 63 public libraries in different urban areas of New Jersey, the authorsâ findings are inconclusive by not uncovering significant data. However, the research proves fruitful by offering data and informed opinions on the minutely researched topic, which can be applied to the foundational research pertaining to the purpose of this annotated bibliography.
Elizabeth Racki holds the experience in health management necessary to conduct a relevant and trustworthy investigation to evaluate the studyâs primary purpose. Regression analysis is employed to note the direct impact of public libraries on the rate of hospitalizations and healthcare coverage, with variables addressed and considered when evaluating the results. The study was published in 2020, making the results significantly relevant due to the current state of research on this topic being similar. This study is written for a peer audience of medical practitioners; terminology is defined, context is given, and the authors elaborate upon the regression analysis results. Although, the mathematics used in the analysis is foreign to those unfamiliar with regression analysis. However, since this particular study only in part can be applied directly to the focus of rural Appalachia, the math concerning urban New Jersey does not hinder the credibility and worth of this study being used for the sake of this bibliographyâs purpose. The purpose of this study reiterates the focus of this bibliography. It helps provide ideas and research that can be used for research on the potential of public libraries in rural Appalachia concerning healthcare disparities. Due to the lack of statistical findings, the results remain inconclusive, and the conclusion and premise are both informed opinions stating the importance of public libraries being utilized as healthcare hubs in collaboration with other institutions such as medical organizations and community centers. By collaborating with other institutions in the community, the overall range of healthcare access can improve. The findings, although insignificant, found a positive relation to the rate of healthcare coverage and negative relation to hospitalizations (Racki 145-148). However, variables such as income and possible survey report bias are addressed, giving the audience a reason to find the analysis results insignificant. Other case studies and analysis findings are cited in the case study to help provide context and the importance of health literacy and literacy. Counter-arguments from opposing authors are not included. However, the authors note the negative possibilities from outside reporting and regression analysis. Regression analysis is a valuable tool that can be used after further research has been conducted on the potential of rural public libraries in Appalachia as long as variables are considered with the appropriately selected sample and setting. With minimal research and awareness, case studies and investigations such as this one help pave the way for further research on this particular topic, potentially ultimately bringing more awareness to the importance of public libraries concerning healthcare and the unique challenges faced by rural public libraries in Appalachia.
Conclusion
For topics such as the focus of this bibliography, there needs to be more extensive research. In the scholarly arena, the potential role of public libraries in rural Appalachia in improving healthcare disparities is a new topic if we define new as an idea without ample dedication by authority. Future researchers should consider the varying degrees of reporting authority and the lack of universal definitions. Keyword pairing is more important than the number of keywords chosen, such as âlibraryâ paired with ârural.â Always start with specific or advanced searches, then generalize more as the research progresses to craft the focus better and obtain more relevant materials. Information relevant to the focus may be used in other research arguing a different purpose. So, searching for general and specific keywords in the body or abstract is as crucial as the title. Valuable keywords to start are âAppalachia,â âAppalachian,â ârural,â âlibrary,â âlibraries,â and âhealthcare.â Researchers should also consider the differences in spelling, âhealthcareâ as opposed to âhealth care,â key phrases such as âlibrary servicesâ, and use of regional or state names, for example, âsouthern,â âWest Virginia,â or ânorthern Panhandle,â as opposed to âAppalachian.â Scholarly article databases such as JSTOR are beneficial in locating case studies focusing on public libraries. At the same time, medical databases like Springer are more beneficial for material focusing on healthcare in rural regions or library services related to healthcare. With topics similar to this bibliographyâs particular focus, retaining the information disposition âscholarship as conversation (Framework for Information 20)â is valuable to remember. As more research is dedicated to this topic, more perspectives will conduct arguments, posing either negative or positive statistics and relationships. A black-and-white stance is inappropriate for this conversation, as the relationship between libraries and healthcare disparities will always be a gray area. Different angles on the same topic will produce varying results spanning many fields for multiple purposes. Relevant experience, education, and ethics will differentiate between expert and novice; however, the noviceâs voice can hold authority concerning new ideas in contrast with contributions made to other focuses which hold more research.

[In] the making and unmaking of amphibious urban modernity in Recife in the Northeast of Brazil [...] the transformation of the city was predicated on [...] [a] notion of whiteness that required the enclosure of wet, amphibious space to make dry land. [...] Racialised groups - of black, indigenous, and mixed heritages - and the houses, marshlands, and mangroves where they lived, were subject to eradication [...]. [F]rom the 1920s to 1950s, during the rise to hegemony in Brazil of [a particular form of nationalism,] [...] [the] idea's heartland [was] the Northeast. This period gave birth to Brazilian urban modernity [...]. [F]orests, wetness, and the spectre of commonly held land were understood as threats to whiteness and its self-association with order, purity [...]. To answer the question of why the racial division of nature was so important, [...] turn to the hygienic, boundary-making practices of the Brazilian Estado Novo [...] [and its] eugenic visions [...].
Nature is deeply imbricated in the processes of white supremacy [...]. Recife is one of the largest cities in Brazil, and one of the oldest. [...] Recife is also a centre of Brazilian black culture [...]. One of the key sites in Brazil's slave and sugar trades [...], the city was [...] [a] hub. Many of these people lived in what came to be called mocambos, a word that designated an informal dwelling, but came to mean much more. The population of the mocambos included not only black Brazilians, but sertanejos from the backlands, black and indigenous caboclos, and others [...]. Enclosure was the crucial mechanism of this division.
---
The Recifense geographer JosuĂŠ de Castro contended that the mangroves were a kind of commons [...]. ZĂŠlia de Oliveira Gominho (2012) characterises the city's transformation [from 1920 to 1950] through the oscillation between its twin faces of âmucambĂłpolisâ and Veneza Americana (the Venice of the Americas). [...]
Mocambos were seen as [...] the place where exploited labour was kept out of sight. [...] They were also [...] the inheritance [...] of the quilombo - the community of escaped slaves. [...] Gilberto Freyre was perhaps the single most influential figure in producing this defining national myth in Brazil. In 1936, he wrote a book on the Mucambos do Nordeste [...]. JosuĂŠ de Castro wrote very differently about the mangroves and mocambos. [...] He analysed Recife as âamphibiousâ: built half in and half out of the water [...]. When JosuĂŠ de Castro [...] [wrote] in the early 1930s, the city was in the midst of political turbulence. As land values increased, the city expanded, and [...] [oppressive] politics intensified [...].
---
With the installment of the [...] [oppressive] Estado Novo regime in 1937, and its project of creating a ânew man,â hygienist modernisation gathered speed. In July 1939, the proto-fascist administration [...] of Agamenon MagalhĂŁes, put in place by GetĂşlio Vargas' repressive Estado Novo, launched the Liga Social Contra o Mocambo (Social League Against the Mocambo, LSCM).
The League emerged out of a tellingly named âCrusadeâ against the mocambos. [...] Mocambos were characterised as repellent, unhygienic, and dangerous: âthe mocambo which repels. The mocambo which is the tomb of a race ⌠a sombre landscape of human misery ⌠which mutilates human energy and annuls work [...].
The LSCM couched its civilisational, modernising mission in the conjuncture of techno-scientific discourses of medicine and planning with clear eugenic tones [...]. [T]he LSCM commissioned a fresh census of the 45,000 mocambos in the city. They brought the mocambos/mangroves into being as objects of knowledge on behalf of the economic elite and local, national, and international capital. In the 1923 census in Recife, âof 39,026 dwellings surveyed, 51.1% were considered âdeficientâ mocambos.â [...]
---
These were the decades of the embranquecimento of the Brazilian population through public policies of immigration, miscegenation, and sterilisation [...]. This white supremacist ideology was inseparably a politics of nature. MagalhĂŁes wrote:
The idle life, the life that the income of the mocambos provides, is a life without restlessness and without greatness. It is a life of stagnant water. ⌠[that] generates in its breast the venom of larvae, which are the enemies of life. Enemies of life, as are the mocambos and the sub-soil of cities, where the polluted waters contaminate pure waters, which come from the deepest layers of the earth. (Magalhães, 1939c, n.p.)
---
Attempts to âcleanseâ the city functioned through a distinct process: aterramento, the making of land. [...]
Or as 1990s mangue beat [mangrove beat] musicians [...] put it, âthe fastest way also to obstruct and evacuate the soul of a city like Recife is to kill its rivers and fill up its estuariesâ [...]. This racial division of nature - in alliance with, bound up with, a racial division of space - facilitated the production of spacialised white supremacy.

The Ultimate Guide to Writing CIPD Assignments That Impress Assessors
Hey CIPD students! đ Writing assignments for your Level 3, 5, or 7 qualification can feel like climbing a mountainâexciting but intense. Whether youâre decoding HR basics, analyzing workplace policies, or crafting strategic essays, you want your work to scream âIâve got this!â to assessors. Thatâs where this ultimate guide comes in. Weâve packed it with step-by-step tips, real-world tricks, and insider advice to help you write CIPD assignments that stand out. From planning to polishing, hereâs how to ace every task and boost your HR career. Letâs dive in! đ
Step 1: Decode the Assignment Brief Like a Pro
Every CIPD assignment starts with the briefâitâs your roadmap. Miss a turn, and youâre lost. Level 3 briefs might ask you to âdescribeâ HR processes, Level 5 wants you to âanalyzeâ practices, and Level 7 demands âcritical evaluationâ of strategies. Skipping over keywords like these is a rookie mistake. How to Nail It:
Read the brief twice. Highlight command words (âexplain,â âjustify,â âassessâ) and learning outcomes.
Break it into tasks. For example, a Level 5 brief on diversity might have three parts: define DEI, analyze its impact, and propose solutions.
Write a one-sentence summary of the goal (e.g., âShow how wellbeing boosts retentionâ). Example: For a Level 3 task on recruitment, list steps like job ads and interviews. For Level 7, question if those steps align with strategic goals. Pro Tip: Stuck on complex briefs? CIPD Assignment Help can clarify requirements and craft tailored, plagiarism-free assignments for any level. Their experts save you time while hitting every mark.
Step 2: Plan Your Assignment Structure
A jumbled assignment confuses assessors, and nobodyâs got time for that. A clear structure keeps your ideas tight, whether itâs a 500-word Level 3 report or a 2,500-word Level 7 essay. How to Nail It:
Introduction (100â200 words): State what youâll cover and why it matters. For Level 5, mention a workplace context (e.g., âThis report explores engagement in tech firmsâ).
Main Body (800â2,000 words): Use headings for each task or theme. Level 3 needs simple sections (e.g., âHR Rolesâ); Level 7 needs depth (e.g., âStrategic Impact of HRâ).
Conclusion (150â250 words): Summarize key points without new info. For Level 7, add insights (e.g., âHR drives business agilityâ).
References: List all sources in Harvard format (e.g., Smith, 2023). Example: A Level 5 assignment on learning styles might have headings: âTypes of Learners,â âTraining Solutions,â âEvaluation Methods.â Pro Tip: Draft an outline firstâitâs like a GPS for your thoughts. Spend 30 minutes planning to save hours later.
Step 3: Research Like an HR Detective
Great assignments need evidence, not guesses. Level 3 accepts basic sources, but Level 5 and 7 demand journals, reports, and stats. Weak research = weak grades. How to Nail It:
Start with CIPD: The Knowledge Hub has free articles on engagement, DEI, and more. Perfect for all levels.
Dig Deeper: Use Google Scholar for papers (e.g., âemployee motivation theoriesâ) or industry reports from Deloitte or Gallup.
Stay Current: For Level 7, include 2024â2025 trends like AI in HR or hybrid work policies.
Organize Findings: Save links in a Google Doc or Notion table with notes (e.g., âGallup 2024: 60% of workers value flexibilityâ). Example: For a Level 5 task on retention, cite Herzbergâs Two-Factor Theory and a CIPD report on turnover costs. Pro Tip: Overwhelmed by research? CIPD Assignment Help offers expert research and writing for Levels 3, 5, and 7, weaving credible sources into plagiarism-free assignments.
Step 4: Blend Theory with Real-World Examples
CIPD assignments shine when you connect academic ideas to reality. Assessors want to see you apply knowledge, not just recite it. How to Nail It:
Pick Relevant Theories: Level 3 might use Maslow for motivation, Level 5 applies Tuckman for teams, and Level 7 critiques Kotterâs change model.
Add Examples: Use your workplace (e.g., âMy firmâs onboarding improved retention by 20%â) or research case studies (e.g., Googleâs DEI initiatives).
Balance Both: For every theory, pair it with a practical point. In Level 5, link SWOT analysis to a companyâs hiring gaps. Example: For a Level 7 essay on change, use Kotterâs 8 Steps and discuss a merger youâve seen (or a case like Amazonâs logistics shift). Pro Tip: No work experience? Search âHR case studiesâ on CIPDâs site for inspiration.
Step 5: Write Clearly and Professionally
Fancy words donât impressâclarity does. Assessors grade on how well you communicate, especially in Level 7âs complex essays. How to Nail It:
Keep Sentences Short: Aim for 15â20 words max, especially in Level 3 reports.
Use Headings and Bullets: Break up text for readability. Level 5 benefits from lists (e.g., âThree Wellbeing Benefitsâ).
Avoid Jargon Overload: Explain terms like âstrategic HRMâ briefly for Level 3 readers.
Edit Ruthlessly: Cut fluff (e.g., âvery uniqueâ becomes âuniqueâ). Use Grammarly for polish. Example: Instead of âThe organization effectuates enhanced productivity,â say âThe company boosts productivity with training.â Pro Tip: Read your draft aloud to catch awkward phrasesâit works like magic.
Step 6: Perfect Your Referencing
Sloppy citations can flag plagiarism or cost marks, especially in Level 7âs research-heavy tasks. CIPD usually uses Harvard referencing, and nailing it shows professionalism. How to Nail It:
Cite In-Text: Mention sources like (Jones, 2024) when quoting or paraphrasing.
Build a Reference List: Format as: Author (Year). Title. Publisher. URL (if online). E.g., CIPD (2024). Employee Engagement Report. cipd.co.uk.
Use Tools: Try Cite This For Me or Zotero to automate formatting. Example: For a Level 5 assignment, cite a journal: (Smith, 2023) in-text and âSmith, J. (2023). HR Trends. Journal of HRM, 12(3), 45â60â in references. Pro Tip: Double-check your course guideâsome centers tweak referencing rules.
Step 7: Get Feedback and Revise
Even pros need a second pair of eyes. Feedback catches gaps, from missing brief points to weak arguments. How to Nail It:
Self-Review: Check if you hit all brief tasks and used evidence.
Ask Peers or Tutors: Share drafts with study groups or CIPD forums for tips.
Go Pro: Tight on time? CIPD Assignment Help offers editing and full writing for Levels 3, 5, and 7. Their plagiarism-free assignments are delivered fast, ensuring you meet deadlines with top-quality work. Example: A peer might spot that your Level 5 conclusion repeats the introârevise for fresh insights. Pro Tip: Edit at least twice: once for content, once for grammar and flow.
Step 8: Submit with Confidence
Youâve planned, researched, written, and polishedânow itâs showtime. Submitting a well-crafted assignment feels amazing, and itâs your ticket to HR success. How to Nail It:
Check Formatting: Use your centerâs guidelines (e.g., 12pt Arial, double-spaced).
Upload Early: Avoid last-minute tech glitchesâsubmit a day before if possible.
Reflect: Jot down what worked (e.g., outlining saved hours) for next time. Example: For Level 7, ensure your 2,500-word essay has a cover page if required, then hit submit! Pro Tip: Celebrate each submissionâitâs a step toward your CIPD credential!
