Not My America

I am a Texan, yes I lead with that when asked where I am from by people across the world. Now, most people would answer, "I'm an American", and be proud of it. I'm not, I used to be, then I saw what was becoming of my home country. I was born and raised in Texas, Southern Born, Southern Bred, and because of this I was instilled with the pride of where I come from, America first, then Texas. Now, this all changed when I was in highschool and I started to see how the world really was, all thanks to my teachers, who I love still to this day. They taught there class, but they also went out of their way to show us the truth, that America was going downhill. I want to steal a phrase that is being used by bad people, I want to make America great again. Not in the way they want to, America was built on the ideal that anyone, ANYONE, could come here and make a life, not just rich white people, the poor, does the great symbol of our nation not say, " Give me your tired, your poor, your starving, your huddled masses yearning the be free", that was my America, the belief of freedom, the freedom to be ourselves, the freedom to live as we see fit. Yes, that includes the idiots out there, to quote a smart woman one miss Evelyn Beatrice Hall, " I do not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death your right to say it." That is another staple of my America, free speech, even if your opinion sucks, but what I don't agree with, hurting people because you're an idiot. I agree, they can talk all they want, but I will still punch a Nazi in the face should I meet one. Both of which are unpopular opinions, but so what, they are mine. They are part of my America. Until we learn what it was that made America great in the first place, what drove her, what made the founding fathers want to fight to protect her, then we will never be great...I want America to be great again, but I don't want a divided nation, I want to see people of all race, gender, creed, and what have you walk about without fear of being attacked. Make my America real again, now I ask, what is your America?

What is happening in America is not okay. White supremacy movements are not okay. Black lives matter. They always have and always will. Racism is a crime and nothing to be celebrated. First installment of my “challenge” to post work exclusively by women and LGBTQIA+ artists: “Dirty Computer” by @janellemonae; @badboyent, @atlanticrecords, @wondaland; 2018, UK.

.This album and accompanying “emotion picture” will persist throughout American cultural history. She and her collaborators, motivated by the sudden death of @prince and the horrid 2016 election, created a sonic and visual Guernica. In less than an hour, Janelle lets loose, providing necessary and astute commentary on the current state of the world, criticizing the unrepentant hatred that fuels so much of the racism, sexism, homophobia, revisionist history, greed, and close-mindedness that characterizes the pall hovering over this country.

Nonetheless, she remains hopeful, refusing to flee, asserting, “I am not America’s nightmare. I am the American Dream.” She. Is. Not. Wrong. 🌈
