Christmas was around the corner.

Or maybe in a few couple days.

In reality, it was more than a month away.

November, 1st of November, and everything turned a mix of red, white and green. The colors of your favorite time of the year.

Your hands were covered in bags, and the bags filled with presents for all of your loved ones. It was barely afternoon, but you had woken up since 6am to be at stores as quick as you could.

Every single present was planned, even if it’s one time they mentioned they wanted it, or something they’ve been dying for since forever. Your presents were always the best, and everyone knew that.

After you buyed some great amount of gift wrapping, you finally headed home.

You knew you’d take a long time to get home, holiday shopping traffic was surely starting now.

Just a day after halloween and you knew you had to make everything green and white, and hella lot of red.

The rest of the day was for yourself, your family, and for making everything festive. Changing your bedsheets from black to red. Having christmas decorations over the entrance of your house.

The only thing that was missing, was the Christmas tree.

The very thing you waited for all year long.

You weren’t sure if it was the smell, or the shape. But the journey to find the tree, that was all you needed for Christmas.

You closed your eyes, and that silly little Christmas tree farm was the only thing you pictured.

“Sweetie, it’s time to go, they’re here!” My mom screamed from downstairs.

I finished drying my hair, since I had just showered. Quickly, I grabbed all the extra clothes I needed for the cold weather outside.

I rushed downstairs, grabbing a beanie I had by the door in the way.

I could see at the corner of my eye the whole place covered in a blanket of snow.

“Oh, we are ready to go now!” I heard my dad shout as I was locking the door soon a lot of footsteps.

“Took you long enough” I heads a calm voice behind me.

I turned around to see the face I’ve been missing so much. I quickly jumped into his arms. “I’ve missed you too, asshole.” I whispered in his ear. He chuckled, making my whole body shiver with excitement.

“Missed you too, you have no idea.”

I let him go, taking a good look at him. His dimples showing up, and his white pearled teeth shining at me.

I couldn’t hide my smile, he was finally here.

A honk interrupted my thinking. “Come on you two, we want to get early this year!” I heard Lorenzo screaming from his car.

We both rushed to it, my dad, mom and Pascale left in the other car. While the Leclerc’s, my brother and I traveled in this car.

“Hey y/n!” Lorenzo smiled at me through the car mirror “Sup!” Arthur gave me a wave from the co-pilot seat.

“Hi!” I responded as I settled into my seat, putting on my seat belt. Lorenzo wasn't the best driver around.

“So, how was everything both of you? Did you miss us?” My brother started a conversation.

“It’s been crazy! All I could ever imagine, it literally felt like a dream”

“Yeah, all the behind the scenes is absolutely crazy, definitely learned a lot from the team, I think white looks good on us” Arthur completed.

“But, do you know what will look even better?”

“Red!” We all said in union and laughed.

Charles had won the new Ferarri seat for the 2019 season, and we were all so proud of him.

“We all saw you at your races, y/n was the first one to wake up and put on the tv, always.” My brother, Matthias tried to tease me.

Charles turned to look at me with a grin plastered in his face.

“Okeyy, I’m a morning person, alright? What is wrong with that?” I answered normally.

Yeah, I am a morning person, but I would normally go walking on my mornings or maybe do some exercise, not stay home watching tv.

But if Charles was on it, there was no way I would miss it.

“If you say sooo” I leaned out of my seat to look at Matt, since he was on the other side of the car. Charles was in the middle.

“okay.” He quietly answered to my glare.

“Anyway, so what is the first thing you want to do when we get there?” Lorenzo asked from the pilot seat, concentrated on not crashing.

“The sleighs”

“The horses!”

“Maybe we should get the trees first” Charles said calmly, looking at the road ahead.

“Yeah, you know how quickly they buy them, we should get the best two around.” I smiled at them, and everyone nodded in agreement.

Charles was right, the biggest, greenest and beautiful trees were obviously taken as soon as possible.

Last winter we were left with not the best tree because we all got distracted doing something else.

“So, we all know the drill, right?” Arthur asked, turning to look at the three of us in the back.

I smirked, this was going to be fun.

“Maman, papa are with Pascale, I texted them. They are going to wait for you, Enzo”

And with that, we arrived to the parking lot, and thank god we found a good place to park in, I did not want to walk too much after the whole day.

We always end up exhausted.

“Everyone get their phones at maximum volume, if someone calls answer immediately!” We all agreed.

“Go go go gooo!”

I opened the door as fast as I could, and waited for Charles to get out, but in a blink of an eye he already grabbed my hand and started to run to the barns direction.

I was slowly catching to his pace.

Shit he was faster than last year.

He finally stopped at the start of the trees. “Well, we have a lot of options”

Charles was concentrated on watching every single tree in front of us, scrunching his nose in a very cute way.

“Yeah… we better go looking”

Half an hour. A whole 30 minutes we were looking for the damn trees.

All of us took this very seriously.

“Too short”

“Too tall”

“Ew, that’s ugly.”

“Never liked the ones with fake snow.”

“Not fluffy enough”

“Oh come on, there is no way an ornament will look good in that.”

Every time there was an excuse. That was until Arthur and Matthias called us saying they found the 1st one.

Then my maman and papa called right after just to say they finally found another one, the most ‘perfect’ in the place.

In the pictures they sent to us, they looked so cute and wonderful. Surely there was no complaining at all.

So the Christmas tree hunt was over. And now we could peacefully walk around the place.

Charles and I walked silently to our favorite place here, it was somewhere close to the icy and blue ice rink.

Some small open cabins were there, just so people could get somewhere to get warm, and to lit up a bonfire.

The temperatures here were no joke.

Charles and I were basically freezing, even if we had the mittens that his mom made for us last year.

I snuggled into my sweater as I waited for charles to set the bonfire.

“You cold?”

“Mhm” he laughed at my state, I always get easily cold, but that doesn’t mean I hate winter.

It’s actually the exact opposite.

“Your nose is red as a tomato.” He pinched my nose.

“Hey!” He shrugged and smiled while he gave me his white scarf. “Thanks…”

I was now hypnotized by the dancing fire, and Charles came closer, having his arm touching mine.

“I wish you could’ve come with me” He whispered.

“To your races?”

“Everywhere, I needed you there.” He sweetly smiled at me. But I hit him in his arm “ow? What was that for?” He laughed at me.

“For all the times you were reckless and almost gave me a heart attack!… but, I would’ve loved being there with you too, you know that”

He chuckled, since we were little, when he was karting I would always be there for him when he crashed or just had a bump on the way.

Always.

But now we were talking about F1, something people should not play with. Cars that go at a speed I can’t even think.

So, yeah, I obviously had my nearly death experiences while watching the tv and having Charles crashing out of nowhere.

But here he was, next to me and I could now feel his warmth.

Missing her is just an understatement, he needed her. Every day it passed without her was absolutely devastating.

Yeah, they texted and called often, but there was nothing like having her by his side.

At this point she’s the air he need to breathe, it was like the sun finally appearing after long rainy days.

She was the first person he called when he got into Ferrari, she was the one who he texted in the middle of the night when he couldn’t sleep.

Charles didn’t even know how much he needed her till she wasn’t by his side anymore.

How do I even tell her?

She’s at my side, peacefully watching the bonfire while I am dying inside to tell her how much se makes me feel.

“Hey…” I started, I don’t even know what Im fucking going to say.

She turned her head to look at me, and tilted her head while shining her big gorgeous eyes at me.

I gulped. She stopped the world completely by just looking at me.

“Are you ok? You look like you’ve seen a ghost” she laughed, and the ends of my lips turned upwards.

“Here, let’s go take some hot cocoa, maybe it’ll help you relax”

She stood up and offered me her hand, and I took it hesitatingly, if I don't do it now when will I do it? I can’t just not tell her.

“Oh god, you’re even paler now.” She looked a bit worried.

“Come on big boy, you will be fine, follow me”

I grunted, but she didn’t stop moving. The cold air hitting us as soon as we left the warmth of the bonfire.

“Here, with marshmallows, just how you like it Charlie.” She showed her teeth at me handing a warm cup of hot chocolate.

“Feeling better?” She placed a falling piece of her hair behind her her ear after taking a sip from her own cup.

“More than ever” I replied.

She looked directly into my eyes, god I could melt right now.

“What was it that you were saying?”

I almost choked.

“Ugh, nothing important”

“Must be, you can always count on me Charlie.” She placed her delicate hand on top of mine.

Charlie, she has called me that since we were little. My parents and hers were friends since forever, and I guess we just followed.

“I just, was thinking about when I was away. Uh, I was just thinking about this… girl.”

I felt a sting on my chest

But that is does the mean anything, right?

“Oh” i just managed to say, I looked at my feet just so I couldn’t meet his angelic eyes.

who am I even fooling at this point?

“It’s just, I really, really want her to be more to me than she is now. I just don’t know how to tell her.”

Cool.

Cool cool cool cool cool… cool.

“I mean, I don’t know, what is she like?” I looked everywhere just to not look at him.

But I’m pretty sure he must be distracted thinking about this girl.

why am I feeling like this?

“Well” he chuckled. “She’s like, the best woman I’ve ever met. She gets me, and she’s so creative and funny and everything great in this world...”

My heart was slowly breaking by each compliment he gave her.

“…I just want her by my side.”

“Just tell her, if you feel all… this, maybe you should just tell her”

It’s the first time I’ve heard him talk about a girl like this, heck, he even called her a woman.

I finally looked up at him, just to find out he was already looking at me.

His eyes shined with that sparkling light he had. I could resist the smile creeping up my cheeks already.

“Really? I’m just afraid I’ll screw everything up.” He concluded.

“Any girl would be nuts to say no to you.”

His cheeks turned a slightly darker red. I could feel my cheeks burning already.

But I had to stop myself, this isn’t you who he is talking about.

I turned around, I need to take a breath.

“y/n…” he grabbed me by the wrist to turn me around. I met, once again, with her dreamy eyes.

“Yes?” I quietly replied.

“You know who I’m talking about, right?” He raised an eyebrow at me, and gave me a look I couldn’t quite figure out was trying to say.

I shook my head side slowly. I felt my eyes watering.

I looked around just so that he couldn’t catch my glossy eyes.

But I met with a mistletoe just over a head. I opened my mouth in awe.

I felt a shift in the ambiance, I looked back at Charles and saw him smiling showing his dimples.

He was looking at the mistletoe above us.

“I can’t, I just can’t anymore y/n.”

what?

He met my gaze and took both of my hands, I could feel them over my mittens.

“Since we were kids, there was something about you, the is something about you that has always made my heart skip a beat.”

This isn’t happening.

I could feel my mouth slowly forming a smile.

“And I’ve always thought it was normal for me to feel like this with you. But god, being away from you has been hell. I need you, I can’t conform with just texting and calling.”

“Maybe this might sound selfish, but I don’t even want to picture you with someone else who is not me. I thought it was a little crush, but heck, you make me feel this way every single time and I never get tired of it.”

I was completely speechless.

This is happening.

“It’s ok if you don’t feel the same way, but it physically hurts to not tell you how much you actually mean to me. I’d be a fool not to tell you how special you are.”

At this point I started crying.

I cupped his face in my hands.

“What i’m trying to say is… I love you. More than I’ve ever loved anyone.”

I was left with words, I’ve never been good at telling my feelings.

But I am good at showing them.

I slowly looked up at the mistletoe, and he followed my eyes.

I bit my lip. And furrowed my eyebrows asking him with signs, not words.

“Please” he quietly begged. I didn’t even had to think it twice.

I crashed my lips into his, expressing every single ounce of love I had for him. He followed.

It was the most magical night of the year.

Under the sparkling lights, bundled up in their mittens and coats, sweet dreams of holly and ribbons…

The couple finally found their way together, and their souls finally united and all their wishes came true.

Their love was blooming, and it all started in that little Christmas tree farm.

Reunited at Last

Word Count: 2,479 a/n: Anything written in italics is spoken in english, anything written in bold and italics is what Evie is thinking. Warnings: swearing, talks of anxiety and throwing up

November, 2019

Evie wakes up to her alarm at three in the morning and she sighs heavily. She stretches and dismisses her alarm in the same swift motion and then she gets up to start her day. She first heads to her kitchen, petting her dogs as she passes by them. She rubs the back of her head awkwardly as she grabs one of her premade breakfast meals out of the freezer. It’s a homemade ham, bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich that she made the night before, she pops it in the microwave. While it heats up she grabs a container of peach yogurt and some white chocolate granola to put inside it. She snacks on the yogurt while going over the plan for the day in her head. She needs to shower, walk her dogs, talk to her management, then go about her normal training. It’s going to be a very long day…

She’s brought back to reality when she hears her microwave beep, she grabs her food and goes and sits on her couch tucking her legs under her as she does. She rubs her temples before she eats her food kind of quickly and then she gathers herself to go shower, playing music as she does. During her shower she makes sure to wash her face and brush her teeth. She wraps herself in her robe before she walks back to her room and quickly heads to her closet. She grabs a pair of black leggings and a white cami. After she gets her clothes on she grabs her favorite oversized hoodie that is near her bag and slips on her sneakers. 

“Luna, Aurora, it’s time for your walk before I go to training, my loves.” Evie calls to her dogs and they instantly run to her side with their leashes in their mouths.

Evie smiles down at them and clips their leashes to their collars and puts on their booties before they head out, she also slips on her face mask. Evie ends up walking her dogs for about twenty minutes, replaying bits of last night in her mind. She feels like a burden and lets out a stressed sigh before letting her dogs back into her apartment and hanging their leashes back up on the wall.

“You guys behave now, ya? I don’t want a single message from my roommate that you guys didn’t listen. It’ll be a longer day today so I won’t be able to see ya til tonight.” Evie says to her two dogs before kissing them both on their heads.

She grabs her bag from her room before rushing out the door, she’s late now because she lost track of time during the walk. She quickly pulls her baseball cap onto her head and slips her face mask back on before bolting out the door to catch her ride. Her manager told her they had to talk to her and those words haunted her the entire time she tried sleeping. What could they need from her? Surely she isn’t in any trouble right?

Yesterday’s training was really hard for Evie and she’s remembering every mistake she made and she wonders if it was because of that. Maybe they are cutting me from the family? Maybe I’ll never debut after all. She thought to herself tears threatening to form and she quickly stops that line of thinking and pops her earbuds in and listens to her music to calm her mind. She laid her head on the window and zones out as her mind races as to what management could want from her.

She shakes her head and comes back to reality again when she notices her phone is going off. It’s her brother and she instantly answers.

Evie is all smiles as she answers the facetime call. “Huddy! Hi! How’d you know I was up?” 

“I didn’t, I have some amazing news for you though and that’s why I called you at this hour.” Hudson, Evie’s older brother, is equally as smiley as she is, if not more.

“Well, out with it!”

“You’re going to be an Auntie!” Hudson nearly shouts as he waves a positive pregnancy test at the camera.

“I’m glad!” Evie says with a beaming smile. “Unfortunately I’ve got to go, we made it to the building.” 

“Awe, well, call me when you can ya?” Hudson says with a slight frown. “You’ve been extra busy the past few days.”

“Yes of course I’ll call ya. Don’t forget to eat brekky and to take care of yourself. I’ve got things to tell you later. I love ya Huds.”

“I love you too, Evs.” he replies before hanging up.

Talking to her brother seemed to bring up Evie’s mood a lot and she thanks her driver before she heads to the practice room. Blinking a lot to get her eyes used to the bright lights of the room. By now it is nearly  five in the morning, usually she’d be here by now or just leaving. Evie basically lives in the practice rooms not because they make her but because she doesn’t deem herself worthy of being an idol.

“Evelyn?” says an oddly familiar voice, at first she can’t put her finger on who it is. Then her eyes instantly widen when she looks up and sees who it is. She nearly drops her bag to the floor as she bows her head very low.

“Yes sir? Was it you that needed to speak to me?” Evie asks in a shaky voice in English before she mentally scolds herself and repeats it in Korean.

“I have some really really good news for you. Follow me.” JYP says before leading her out of the training room she’s been calling home for the past year.

“Don’t you dare think I haven’t noticed how hard you work yourself Nari.” he says, stopping suddenly. Evie turns and looks at him tilting her head not wanting to interrupt him if he wants to speak again. 

“I know how hard you took your elimination from the show, and I do apologize. I just hope you understand I did that so you could grow even more as an artist and find yourself more. I’ve been monitoring you closely since you’ve been eliminated and I don’t think you fit with the other girls you’ve been training with. You belong with them.” he says to her before nodding to a door. Evie starts to tremble in place, her eyes widening again.

“Skz is in there?” she asked quietly, missing her boys.

“Yes, only Chan knows you’re coming. Enter when you’re ready, you’re going to be extremely busy from this moment on. I hope you enjoy being back with the group, that is your home Nari.” with that JYP turns and walks away leaving Evie standing there with her jaw on the floor.

She takes many deep breaths trying to calm her nerves. She hasn’t seen these boys since the day she was eliminated from the show. These were her best friends in the entire industry, her literal motivation to work so hard, to be better. Right there, all she has to do is open the door. Her hands are trembling, what if they are mad at her for something? Woojin just left the group not too long ago, so what if people begin to think they added her to replace him? There’s STAYs who have been begging for Evie to debut with SKZ even now so they won’t, but what if others do? Not everyone is going to know her history with SKZ. Evie just open the door and stop procrastinating. 

Evie lays her head against the door and can hear the quiet sounds of talking of the boys who she assumes had just woken up not long ago. She stays like that for a few moments until she hears footsteps coming toward the door and she quickly and quietly moves away from the door fearing it’ll open and they will see her creeping on them like that. Holding her breath she just opens the door, knowing if she doesn’t do it now she never will. She wanted to make sure that the door opened because of her and not one of the boys needed to go to the bathroom or something and exposed her waiting to enter.

When the door opens all the chattering in the room dies, she slowly closes the door behind her staring at the floor, afraid of their reactions. She nervously scratches at her arm and sort of shrinks. The silence is oh so loud.

She quietly says, “Hi…” 

No one says anything, the boys just stare at her in disbelief as if they are seeing a ghost. She finally looks around to see the shocked looks on everyone’s faces and Hyunjin is crying, she wants to hug them all to catch up with them but she can’t find it in her to move. She stares at Minho and her heart drops, he looks pissed at her. Her gaze then goes to Felix who looks like he’s ready to pounce on her and tackle her in a hug. Then she sees Jeongin who is staring blankly at her as if he doesn’t believe that she’s truly there. Chan, who knew she was coming, is smiling softly and warmly, the love that always radiates off him when she’s near him is something she never forgot. Changbin is staring at her shocked to see her, his jaw hanging open. Seungmin is just staring at her, his facial expressions are hard for her to read. Finally she looks at Han who is smiling widely. 

She takes one step forward before falling to the floor and she just bursts into tears, she’s having such a rough time believing any of this is real. Quickly Chan, Felix, Han, and Hyunjin rush up to her and hug her in a group hug to comfort Evie. She’s crying really hard and sorta pushes everyone away after a few moments and runs out of the room to go catch her breath, she suddenly feels really anxious. She at first didn’t have a plan, she wanted to just run home and pretend this awkward reunion never happened but she decided to just head to the bathroom instead knowing that’d be the wiser decision.

She sprints to the bathroom and ends up throwing up her breakfast. During this whole thing her phone was being blown up, she doesn’t know who could be texting her this much at this time but she just turns it to silent and washes her face and slaps her cheeks to hype herself up again. She feels really stupid for leaving them like that, for breaking down in front of them, for throwing up with anxiety. She sighs at herself and takes her phone out of her pocket and sees she’s been added to a group chat, that’s why her phone was being blown up, none of the phone numbers are saved, she couldn’t be bothered to actually read any of the messages just blankly stares at her phone for a few moments before she finally heads back to the room that she sprinted from.

She knocks on the door gently this time before entering, the chattering once again stopping when she enters the room. She feels as though all the connections she had with these boys have disappeared by the silence. She sighs and just grabs her bag and puts her phone in it before putting it in the corner of the room. When she gets back to the center of the room it’s still silent.

“Can someone please say something…?” Evie asks as she anxiously runs a hand through her hair.

“Evelyn? Is that really you?” Hyunjin was the first to say anything.

She nods before speaking. “Yes, hello. I missed you guys…” tears threaten to fall again.

“Why are you here?” Minho asks a bit coldly and Evie visibly shrinks.

Evie shrugs and equally as coldly replies. “Ask your damn leader.”

Felix comes up to Evelyn and just pulls her into a tight hug and she instantly relaxes and mumbles an apology to Minho and Chan for getting snippy as she hugs back her fellow Aussie. He gently rubs her back and kisses her on her cheeks.

“We missed you so much Evs.” Felix says to her excitedly.

“Doesn’t feel like it…” Evelyn pouts and reluctantly pulls away from the hug staring at Minho again.

“Don’t mind him, Bug.” Chan says from behind Felix. “He really missed you, he was torn up after you had to leave. I think he’s in shock.”

“Okay?” Evie is clearly confused. “Doesn’t mean he has to be cold to me like we are strangers now. It’s only been a year…”

She moves around Felix and hugs each member excluding Minho who is just glaring daggers at her.

“Oi!” Evie shouts at Minho to get his attention. “Do you want a hug, Minnie?”

He stands up and just opens his arms and she borderline runs into his arm catching him off guard and they fall to the floor laughing and just cuddle one another, the cold front instantly leaving when he finally got her in his arms. Minho was always one of the members Evie was close to. After they hug for a short while she goes back to clinging to Hyunjin, another one of the boys she’s extremely close to. Instinctively he kisses her head and Chan ushers the group to gather around, Evie sits between Minho and Hyunjin.

“You guys are probably curious as to why Evelyn is back with us in this room. Well I have got some news for you all.” Chan starts the announcement and Evie grabs one hand of each of the boys around her feeling nervous for some reason, fearing they would reject Chan’s words. 

“I have been having a lot of serious conversations recently after everything that has been happening. I voiced how we were upset with the fact that JYP cut Evelyn from the team. After telling him about how I don’t feel like the team is truly ‘Stray Kids’ without Evelyn he told me that he has been monitoring her training process since the day she left us and that if we wanted…” Chan pauses for a moment, probably for dramatic effect before speaking again. “She could join Stray Kids during our next comeback!”

The boys all let out gasps and Minho squeezes Evie’s hand rather tightly, probably from excitement from being able to be with her everyday again. All the boys voice their agreement to let Evie back into Stray Kids, agreeing the group felt so wrong without her. Evelyn finally felt at home again for the first time in about a year. She hugs everyone and tells them all she loves them before they all got ready to actually start practicing.

Summary: On Evie’s 18th birthday, Aiden and the jazz band whip up a little surprise for her. Takes place approximately between HSS:CA 2 and HSS:CA 3 (though my memory of the HSS:CA timeline is a little more fuzzy).

A/N: First of all: to the anon who sent the prompt, major apologies for sleeping on it for so long. Coming up with writing ideas is a bitch, but it is something I want to do more often. And there was also that one time when Tumblr turned off editing for answers to asks, which carried over to the draft post for this for a while. Second of all, I’m fucking obsessed with this song from Doctor Who (“My Angel Put the Devil in Me”, from the Series 3 soundtrack) and I think Evie and Aiden would be as well. Third of all, yes this is a belated birthday fic for Evie, but I’m glad to get it out before the end of Evie’s birthday month at least. Also haha both Evie’s birthday this year and in the setting of the fic were on a Friday. Fourth of all, arghrghrargh my first time writing a fic where one character sings to another AND does a choreographed dance to it too. It’s a lot more difficult than I imagined lol.

Friday, March 8, 2019. The day of Evie’s 18th birthday. She’d been planning to host a birthday party at one of her favorite restaurants in the city, starting in the early evening after school. Almost everyone she knew from school was invited. 

It was late in the afternoon now. Evie took one last look at herself in her new outfit– a navy blue suit with a purple floral necktie– and grinned, before dashing to the living room. There, her dad was checking his phone. 

“Alright, I’m ready to go!” she said. 

He turned to her. “Actually… we can’t leave just yet…”

She pouted. “What??? But Daaaad, the party starts at 5 PM and it’s already 4:45!”

“The people doing the decorations are… taking a bit longer than expected.”

“Oh…”

“It’s a bit awkward to go to a party when they’re still putting decorations up, isn’t it?”

“That’s true,” her face softened. “Do the other guests know?”

“...yep! I’ve just told them, in fact.”

“Okay… but how long do we have to wait?”

“Shouldn’t be more than… ten to twenty minutes?”

Evie pouted again. 

“It’s not that long…”

“Okay, fiiiiine, I’ll be patient…”

“And I’ll be doctor!”

Evie winced. “Dad, NO…”

…

About twenty minutes passed, and then finally, her dad said it was okay to start driving to the restaurant. After a fifteen minute drive, they arrived, and Evie wasted no time going in. 

The room was alive with upbeat music, purple decorative lights and flowers, and many of Evie’s friends. It seemed like just about everyone she’d invited had shown up– her main friend group, her teammates, her friends from the other cliques and Hearst, Cher and her friends from theatre, the seniors from last year who hadn’t gone away for college… 

And all of them greeted her with a big “Happy birthday, Evie!!!”, in unison. 

Evie inhaled, beaming at her friends. Many of them ran over to hug her, a few others cheered for her. 

Then she saw Emma and Cher push their way through the crowd and grab her by her arms. 

“Evie! There’s a special surprise for you, right now!” said Cher. 

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah!” said Emma. “Just come with us…” 

The crowd parted, making way for Emma and Cher to pull Evie to the opposite side of the room. As they did, the party music slowly faded out and the lights began to dim. 

“What the–” Evie started. 

“Shhhh. You’ll see soon enough!” Emma replied. 

When they made it to the opposite end of the room, a warm spotlight turned on over her, and there she saw it. The jazz band, all set up with their instruments and dressed in matching snazzy black-and-red suits and… devil horns? Yes, devil horns. 

And at the front of it all… was none other than her beautiful boyfriend Aiden, all dressed up and holding a microphone. 

Evie just about stopped in her tracks as she took in his outfit– a snug, ivory-colored flapper dress that had silver beads sewn into intricate patterns, and hung just barely above his knees. Along with that, he also wore a couple of matching long pearl necklaces, a fluffy white halo accessory over his head, and winged eyeliner.

“Wow…” Evie felt her breath catch. “Aiden, you look–”

Just then, Aiden signaled to the band… and they started to play. 

Evie grinned broadly, her eyes immediately lighting up at the familiar upbeat jazzy tune, and watched intently as her boyfriend danced towards her, in steps that were careful and rhythmic, yet lively. 

Then the tempo slowed, and he held the microphone to his mouth and began to sing. 

“I'm a country girl, I ain't seen a lot… But you came along, and my heart went pop! You took a little streetcar to my heart… And an apple of love fell off my apple cart~”

Evie’s cheeks flustered at his melodious voice. This wasn’t the first time she’d heard him sing– he’s sung to her plenty of times, and they’d practically been doing Evie-Aiden duets since the day they met. But this… this was different. Aiden had never done a solo singing performance for her before, let alone one that involved a bit of dance as well. 

“You looked at me, my heart began to pound… You weren't the sort of guy I thought would stick around… Hey, but it don't have to be eternally… My bad, bad Angel put the Devil in me~”

And his singing voice was all the more different this time around too. Even later into their relationship, as Aiden had become more confident about his singing, there was always still a hint of nervousness in his voice when they sang their duets. But this time, he sang loud and clear. Like he was owning the stage. 

Aiden performed a small twirl before stopping, his eyes meeting hers as he began slowly walking up to her, making her heart jump a little.

“You lured me in with your cold grey eyes… Your simple smile, your bewitching lies…”

As he sang that verse, he reached out and grabbed onto her bright purple tie, making Evie’s face heat up as he began tugging on it gently and pulling her closer to him. 

“One and one and one is three… My bad, bad Angel… the Devil in me~!”

The tempo picked up again. Aiden let go of her tie and took her hand in his as he broke out into energetic dance movements while still singing the lyrics to the song, the skirt of his dress swishing about as he swayed gracefully to the instrumental music. 

Evie squeezed his hand and matched his movements, her pulse racing now.  All the while, the crowd watched with excitement. When they came face-to-face again, she was giving him an almost drunken smile.

Soon enough, Aiden broke from her hold and turned around, sashaying slightly as he started stepping away from her… before looking over his shoulder, catching her gaze once again. 

“My bad, bad Angel~ you put the Devil in me~”

Aiden shook his butt side-to-side to the beat, giving Evie a knowing look that made her cheeks brighten. The music slowed, and he turned around to face her again. 

“So, now my dear, I ain't the girl you knew… 'Cause the Angel's got Heaven, but I get you…”

He sauntered back up to her.

“And the tree of life grows tall, you see… My bad, bad Angel… you put the Devil in me~!”

The beat slowed to a more gentle, relaxed tune as Aiden placed his arm over Evie’s shoulder. 

“Oh… You put the Devil in me~”

Aiden gestured towards Evie’s arm, and she placed her arms around him, taking hold of his waist as they began to rock together. 

“You put the Devil in me…”

Gently and smoothly, Aiden broke out of her hold and took her hand again. Lifting her hand, he twirled himself under her arm, then placed himself backwards against her body– all without missing a beat. 

As Aiden continued to sing, Evie wrapped both of her arms around his middle, embracing him from behind. Aiden pressed back against her and placed his free arm over hers, almost as if to hold her arms in place, as they began to sway side-to-side together again. Evie practically melted into him, his body warm against hers. 

“You put the Devil in me…”

Then, the song picked up again. 

“You put the Devil in… me~!”

He swiftly yet carefully broke from her hold again, and danced in a circle around her as he sang the last few verses of the song. She turned to follow him, their eyes locked onto each other yet again, as he gave her an almost sultry gaze. 

“My bad, bad Angel, you put the Devil in me!”

At the final note, the lights slowly faded back on. Aiden stood in front of the now cheering crowd and took a huge bow, grinning proudly. 

Once he straightened back up, Evie finally let out a high pitched “EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!”, bouncing up and down before leaping onto Aiden, sweeping him up into her arms, and spinning him around. Aiden gasped, dropping his microphone with a loud *thunk*– but then quickly held her face in his hand and pulled her in for a passionate kiss, prompting the crowd to cheer louder. 

After a moment, Aiden broke the kiss. “Happy eighteenth birthday, Darling~”

Evie squeezed him tighter. “Aiden, that was…” She took a deep breath, a starstruck look in her eyes. “Your singing is amazing… I mean, I’ve heard you sing before, obviously, but…”

A slight but visible rosy tint grew on his cheeks. 

“But I’ve never done a singing performance for you, I know. I figured it was about time I did.”

“And you were fucking amazing. I’ve never heard you sing like that before… like, you were already good, but I didn’t know you were this good…”

“I mean… practice makes perfect, after all…”

“That’s true…”

He planted a small kiss onto her lips, making her whole body warm up. 

“And what made you choose that song from Doctor Who for your first performance? I mean, obviously I love the song–”

“That’s just it. I know how much you love the song, and the episodes it came from.” He chuckled softly. “And, I mean… I don’t blame you. It is a fantastic song.”

Evie’s smile grew wider. “God, Aiden… I fucking love you.”

“I love you too, Evie.” 

They pulled each other in for one more kiss, holding each other tightly, before she set him down. 

“And I love your outfit too… you look absolutely gorgeous, as always~”

Even as Aiden beamed at her so brightly, his cheeks turned as red as the other band members’ devil costumes, prompting Evie to giggle.

“Well… I have been having a lot of fun trying on new outfits…” he said, softly. 

At that moment, Ajay and Cher popped up beside them. 

“Hey… if Aiden likes singing, dancing, and dressing up in fancy outfits now… you think we could convince him to join the upcoming spring musical?” Ajay said. “His talent would just be unmatched…”

Evie and Aiden turned towards them. 

“The next play’s gonna be a musical?” Evie said. “I’ve been wanting to act in a play, but, uh… I don’t think I’m ready for one that involves singing…”

Aiden raised an eyebrow at her. “But we’ve literally been doing duets ever since–”

“That’s different. I can sing alright when it’s more casual, but in a professional musical performance? I’m not that good.”

“You should still consider it!” Cher chirped. “If not an acting role, you can always still be an assistant director or a techie…”

“That sounds much more my speed.”

Cher turned to Aiden. “You should definitely consider trying out for a singing role, though!”

Aiden put his hand on his chin thoughtfully. “It could be fun… I know Evie doesn’t want to sing in a musical, but imagine if we got lead roles together…”

“Oh, perhaps I could be convinced now…” Evie said, before smirking playfully. “But, let’s be real. Put Aiden in the musical, and he’ll probably just upstage all the other singers with how good he is. He’ll make everyone else look like chumps.”

“Hey!” Cher exclaimed, her face scrunching up into a pout. “Are you saying I sing like a chump?”

“What– no, I–” Evie’s face fell. 

Cher dropped her pout and grinned again. “Kidding! You probably have a point… I do sing every now and then, but it could use a little more work. Especially since I’m planning to go for an acting role in the musical, of course.”

“Well, if we can’t get Aiden in a singing role for the musical, perhaps he can be a musical director and help coach the actors who are a little more inexperienced?” Ajay suggested. 

“Actually… that’s a great idea!” Aiden said, his face lighting up. “I’d love to do that!”

Ajay beamed. “Oh, perfect! We’ll talk to Mr. Olson on Monday.”

“I’ll need some time to think about it… but I’ll let you know if I do decide to accept.”

“Sounds good to me!” Ajay reached his hand out, and he and Aiden shook hands. “Anyways, great job on your performance, Aiden! And happy birthday, Evie!”

“Yeah! Happy birthday, Evie!!!” cheered Cher. 

“Aww, thank you both so much!” 

Evie gave each of them a warm hug before they walked off. Aiden placed his arms around her and kissed her on the cheek, and she turned back to him.

“Thank you so much, Aiden. For being the best boyfriend ever, and for giving me this awesome birthday.” 

“It’s my pleasure~” Aiden hugged her tighter. “But… there’s still more, of course. Ready to enjoy the rest of your birthday party?”

“Oh yes!”

AESPA 5TH MEMBER INTRODUCTION...

Y/N) (L/N) - A young full-born Korean 19-year-old girl who pursued her dream as a kpop idol at the age of 17 with the song 'Black Mamaba'. She was born on November 17th, 2003 being the youngest member of her group. Being the youngest has many advantages such as being the one with the bigger opinion, getting looked after and being spoilt. Some of the disadvantages are being the target of fans and being labeled selfish, being called a pick me when being happy, and last but not least, being overly sexualized by men twice her age.

(Y/N) was born into a rich and prestigious family. Her father was the CEO of a large business whilst her mother was a song producer who helped produce many hit songs with artists such as Little Mix, Ariana grande, Kai, Taylor swift, NCT, and more. Fans found this as another reason to hate on (Y/N), they believed her status was the only reason she was able to be in the company.

(Y/N)'s music taste isn't to take lightly, she listens to a different variety of music which consists of RnB, 90s rap, rock, and more. Some of her favorite artists are - 50cent, Tupac, Conan gray, Drake, Dvwn, So Soo Bin, Clairo, Motionless in white, Nirvana, Bring me the horizon, The neighborhood, etc.

The girl gained popularity in 2019 when dating rumors of her and the youngest boy of NCT were spread when she was a trainee. The rumors put (Y/N) in a difficult position with her future, but the fans of NCT supported the trainee and welcomed her into their life with open arms when SM confirmed the rumors. The dating rumors had broken out when someone had hacked into Jisungs iCloud account and leaked pictures of the two.

Since she joined the company at the age of 11, she rarely interacted with kids her age causing her to only be close to the idols and trainees in her company. (Y/N) trained with a few of the younger NCT members when they were trainees which led her to meet Park Jisung. When she was 15, (Y/N) got cast in 2-3 K-dramas acting as the younger sister or the younger version of many female actresses. These rolls were minor and were part of many underrated K-dramas but from then she's had a tiny fanbase. She soon disappeared from the acting industry when she and Jisung's relationship began not wanting to cause any trouble in her relationship with the idol.

(Y/N) (L/N) is now one of the most successful 4th generation idols, with all of her M/V's hitting over 100 million views. Now the story begins, we start to learn the hardships of being a 'rookie' idol and being in an exposed relationship. Let's wish (Y/N) good luck in her time being an idol.

Midnights in Paris, Texas

Shout out to @gaylors-cardigan for posting a photo of Taylor during Midnights Mayhem with a red phone ☎️ next to a photo of Lily with a red phone ☎️. At first, I thought it was just a random coincidence. But then I remembered that Lily’s photo was her Halloween 2019 costume as the Nastassja Kinski character from the movie Paris, Texas. Which got me thinking about Taylor’s song Paris on Midnights, which to me is the most Lily song on Midnights.

Taylor used the red phone throughout Midnights Mayhem to reveal various song titles.

The movie Paris, Texas is about two lovers who have not seen each other in four years. The man was controlling and obsessive about the woman, leading to the breakup. Ultimately he finds her working at her new job in a new city. The one and only scene in the movie with the red phone ☎️ is the scene where they meet up after years apart. This Wim Wenders 1984 film is one of Lily’s favorites. The video of Lily as this character from Paris, Texas is still up as a reel on Lily’s IG to this day. It’s the only personal reel she still has up.

One of the themes of the movie, is the lead character trying to find Paris, Texas. People think he is referring to Paris, France but he is not. Instead he has an old school map (“drew a map on your bedroom ceiling”) that he uses to try to find Paris, Texas - a town in the middle of nowhere where he longs to go. An oxymoron and contradiction to Paris, France.

The late 70’s/early 80’s interior decor of Paris, Texas, especially the house scenes, looks very similar to the Midnights decor and aesthetic, especially the Lavender Haze and Anti-Hero music videos. There’s even house scenes with fish.

The red phone in the movie also has a vintage beige speaker next to it (the speaker is what Nastassja Kinski’s character hears her ex-lover through) similar to Taylor’s Midnights Mayhem with the vintage beige speaker near the red phone.

William Bowery

William Bowery may be more than one person. William Bowery was a mystery from Folklore’s release 24 July 2020 until the Long Pond Sessions were released on Disney+ on 25 November 2020. When Taylor first talked about it she was not at ease, here in the interview with Zane Lowe she has a pause when talking about Joe writing Exile (49:34)

In the Long Pond Sessions talking about Exile Taylor says Joe wrote the piano and male lyrics. Jack moves his foot and clarifies “Jesus, lyrics too?” Which Taylor agrees with, adding Joe has such a low voice.

For Betty Taylor said "I just heard Joe singing the entire fully formed chorus of Betty from another room yeah" and "I've written so many songs from a female's perspective of wanting a male apology that we decided to make it from a teenage boy's perspective apologizing after he loses the love of his life because he's been foolish" Jack: "allegedly" "no he's been foolish" Jack: "well, we don't know who William Bowery is". "He's a fool, he's been foolish, we wrote it I'm confirming."

to Zane Lowe Taylor (25 Mins) said she and Joe love songs, she said that Joe wrote the melodic structure and she wrote the lyrics.

"We always bonded over music and had the same musical tastes and he's always the person who's showing me songs by artists and then they become my favorite songs". Funny, Harry has tweeted 6 hours worth of song recommendations.

Also to Zane Lowe, she said "we wrote it exactly the same way we did exile where Joe wrote the piano [pause and sharp breath in] I based the vocal melody on the piano and we sent it to justin" "Joe had written the piano part so that it the tempo speeds up and it changes the music completely changes to a different tempo in the bridge" (Below, Joe says he can play 'piano pretty badly')

7 December 2023 - In Taylors Time Magazine Person of the year article she referenced a number of Harry's inspirations and dressed like them. She referred to Paul McCartney who inspired Sweet Nothing and Bob Dylan who was an influence on Betty.

The name

I think every British guy is probably related to a William, as both Harry and Joe are. Harry has stayed at the Bowery Hotel a lot, including the week he met and started dating Taylor. Joe was also reported to be pictured there in October 2016 with Taylor. Which is not that unusual, it's a cool hotel.

Harry's last pre-pandemic show was the Fine Line secret session on March 2 at the Bowery Ballroom when he also replaced “beechwood cafe” with “Bowery ballroom” in falling He has stayed at the Bowery Hotel in April 2012 (when first dating Taylor) and returned in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022. Harry's grandfathers middle name was William.

Joe told Kelly Clarkson "William, my great-grandfather, who I actually never met was a composer. He wrote a lot of classical music and he wrote a lot of film scores, and then Bowery is the area in New York that I spent a lot of time in when I first went over there.” Joe was reportedly pictured at the Bowery October 2016.

William Bowery is still credited as the songwriter of 3 songs on Folklore: Exile, Betty & Champagne Problems. He's also credited as a writer on Coney Island, Evermore, and Sweet Nothing on Midnights.

In April 2021 Joe Alwyn was credited as a producer for 6 songs of Folklore, including 3 songs William Bowery is not a writer on. Joe has no credits on Evermore and Midnights.

Always playing instruments

To Zane Lowe Taylor said, while discussing William Bowery:

"He's always just playing instruments and he doesn't do it in a strategic ‘I’m writing a song right now’ thing he's always done that”

However, even after Folklore Joe said this on playing instruments:

Saying, “I like music, and I played a bit of guitar awfully in a school band when I was 12.” and “I can play piano pretty badly, but never with the intent of, ‘Right, it’s time for my jazz-fusion album.'”

Harry has spoken about the importance of constantly picking up instruments, has hunted down unique guitars and a Dulcimer for Fine Line. In 2013 was taking piano lessons while touring with One Direction, now he tours with a Piano on tour to write on. Like the 10 minute ballad he wrote for the last LOT show.

Sweet nothing

Sweet nothing could be about Paul and Linda McCartney.

Taylor liked this old post with it the day she released you’re losing me and announced it was written 12 December 2021. The post links sweet nothing to a Paul McCartney Quote about Linda. Harry has referenced Paul and Linda’s collaboration album Ram many times, long before the WB songs:

Paul also interviewed Harry or Another Man and gave him advice on going solo. And Sweet Creature's melody has an homage to Paul's Blackbird.

Paul and Taylor also interviewed each other for Rolling Stone, it is fantastic interview, after Folklore. Interestingly they talk about pseudonyms and Taylor doesn't mention Joe or William Bowery. But does talk about writing under Nils Sjöberg.

"A pseudonym comes in is when you still have a love for making the work and you don’t want the work to become overshadowed by this thing that’s been built around you, based on what people know about you. And that’s when it’s really fun to create fake names and write under them." "I remembered always hearing that when Prince wrote “Manic Monday,” they didn’t reveal it for a couple of months."

Paul said his pseudonym was Fireman, which is referenced in the video for Willow. The phrasing of 'thing that is built around you' is really interesting. Joe does not have much built around him in terms of public persona, and writing together in the pandemic is remarkable, but not inconsistent with a public persona.

Bon Iver

Taylor said she hoped Bon Iver would do the project because ‘they are huge fans’ and Joe has a low voice. Justin Vernon and Harry Styles sound similar. So much so critics pointed out that that Fine Line has similarity to Bon Iver songs, Roslyn for example. This mash up also highlights this:

This is when the polls start to put me in a weird position. Because since we're currently in the current decade, it's hard for me to make assumptions about what this decade is going to sound like. But I'll try my best.

To address the elephant in the room first, this was the start of the Covid 19 pandemic (if you forgot). Are we able to see the impact of the pandemic on the charts? Maybe not in lyrical content (sadly, PlagePop didn't become a thing 😔), but we can see its influence when it comes to chart performance. With the lockdown making it impossible to (safely) tour and promote their music, many musicians had to find other methods. With social media now being the main way people listen to and discover new music and the rise of bedroom pop, this wasn't impossible. But still, many artists either postponed or shelved their releases this year. Which is odd, because the charts were moving incredibly fast in 2020. A song could make it onto the charts one week, and disappear shortly after. So not everything got to stick around, but the stuff that stuck really stuck. The Weeknd's Blinding Lights, for example, was the most-streamed song on Spotify in 2020, and to this day it still holds the record of the most-streamed song of all time. But that might seem odd to some people, since Blinding Lights was not released in 2020.

This isn't unusual. Due to how trends work and the way Billboard releases their charts in December, songs released later in the year often don't chart high until the following year. But I'm bringing this up because the chart of 2020 doesn't look like 2020. Like I said, Blinding Lights was released in November 2019, which isn't that unheard of. But then we have songs like Post Malone's Circles (2019) and Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved (2018). Rockstar and Life Is Good are the only songs featured on this poll that were released in 2020.

And as far as the sound of the 2020's goes, it's too early to say but from what I can see so far, the pop sound of the year 2020 centers more around homages to previous decades. We can see this with the synth wave influences in Blinding Lights, the nu-disco in Don't Start Now, the light funk of Adore You, and the interpolation of Pachelbel's Canon in Memories.

Ten years. Holy wow. There are so many things I want to say that I don’t even know where to begin! But, first of all, I’m truly desolate that I wasn’t able to finish this piece properly in time; this was supposed to be a full work but unfortunately paired with my graduation, a nasty cold and just an overall busy year I just totally ran out of time. I intend on finishing this properly at some point, but for now all I can offer is the line work and the character flats. I hope you enjoy it anyway!

My brother and I have been close our whole lives. We first watched Gravity Falls together in November of 2015. These memories are some I hold so incredibly dear to my heart for so many reasons, but mainly because it was the summer of 2019 when my parents separated, and unfortunately also when my brother was hit very hard by puberty. He suddenly wanted nothing to do with me. We rarely even spoke because more often than not it’d end in a fight that brought me to tears. He hated me, and I could not stand it. I felt so lonely, so betrayed and, more than ever before, longed for the good ol’ days to come back to me.

Eventually, my brother’s destructive behaviour came back to bite him. One day I woke up to hear from some of our mutual friends that everybody had abandoned him; every single one had dubbed him a horrible monster and refused to talk to him ever again. He was completely alone, and, despite everything, I made the decision to ask him what was wrong. For the first time in years he opened up to me. We went on a long evening drive down the highway, just listening to his favorite music and seeing where the road would take us. After this, we finally began to talk again. He’d pop into my room every night just to say hello, watch YouTube and even asked me to teach him how to draw.

The reason I’m telling you all of this is because, during the endeavour, I was often reminded of Dipper and Mabel’s plight near the end of the series. It struck a cord deeper than I had expected it to when I rewatched it during this era, and it gave me hope. Gravity Falls was the last thing we had shared together and bonded over at the time. We created together, we imagined together, we loved together. The days we spent walking around the local track on sunny summer’s days musing over fun ideas for stories and fan-comics were some of the best ones of my life. So, you can imagine how difficult it was to feel like that had all been torn from me.

Nonetheless, just like the Pines twins (both sets! Happy birthday Stan and Ford <3 <3), we forgave each other. We’re best friends again, and I am so incredibly grateful for that. I can’t imagine my life without you, little bro, and I hope we continue to take on the world together for decades to come!

Thank you, Gravity Falls. Thank you for making me laugh, making me cry, making me think, making me feel and making me create. Thank you for the nights I spent curled up on the couch with my whole family, laughing and smiling together. Thank you for making me believe in the power of a sibling bond. Thank you for all of the inspiration, motivation and artistic growth (and being responsible for the first time I was drawing humans regularly!). Thank you for helping me bond and connect with my closest friends in the entire world. It is an absolute privilege to be able to be here to celebrate an entire decade of some of the best television to ever air. I know this show will never truly leave me; how could it after all of this? One day, I’m sure I will watch it again with my children, and then again with my children’s children, and create those memories all over again. And with each line, each frame, I’m sure I will look back to these memories. Moments forever frozen in time, where my family and I were as we should be: well and truly as one.

Introduction

Kiltro is an indie latin folk rock project created by Chilean-American musician Chris Bowers Castillo while working as a walking tour guide in Valparaíso, a formerly prosperous port city northwest of Santiago, Chile. After the opening of the Panama Canal, the city transformed into an elusive haven of bohemians and stray dogs - or "quiltros", Chilean slang for "mutt". Inspired by the liminal nature of Valparaíso, Chris wrote a series of short stories that would later evolve into the material of the band, using the symbol of the stray dog as both a metaphorical vehicle and an empowering term for his mixed identity and music, ultimately naming the band after them. Subsequently, he would reunite with an old college friend, Will Parkhill, who would go on to join as the band's bassist, alongside Michael Devincenzi as their drummer. Together, they would shape the sound of Kiltro, reanimating Chris's stories into the mysterious characters, melodic allure, and intangible soundscapes that comprise and lurk beneath their debut album Creatures of Habit. Later on, affected by the quarantine, the band took a more introspective approach, deciding to use cats as a motif for their sophomore record, Underbelly, inspired by their solitary and contemplative nature. Q (regulus_di): What's the best show the band has ever had, or alternatively the most special?

WILL: the last run of tour had the most special shows in a while, especially the navy pier in Chicago, Vienna, and Brooklyn. The growth and excitement has been extremely exciting to see.

CHRIS: The show on the staircase outside of a friend’s restaurant, in Valparaiso, Chile.

MICHAEL: the shows in which there are zero expectations about the city have been the best. Every time we arrive in a town that we know nothing about, we are blown away by the hospitality that we receive. Towns like Columbus, Phoenix, Richmond, Vienna, and Detroit come to mind.

FEZ: can’t decide. He says it’s like asking him what his favorite meal of all time is, “they all filled my tum tum” 😂

Q (goodman873): Chris solo album?

A: Currently the focus is Kiltro, if a song is written that seems out of place for the current state of the project, it’s often left on the shelf to return to at another time. There are a handful of songs that were planned for Underbelly that ultimately didn’t make it onto the final version for one reason or another, the possibility of them being included on a future album always exists. If a song appears that categorically falls outside of the vision of the band, then a solo project might be considered, but the ultimate goal is to experiment and push musical boundaries.

Q (evantheblank): Favorite unreleased / scrapped song, and is it planned to be available at some point?

A: There are tons of demos that have silly working titles, some of the songs that make it into the final version often don’t have a legitimate name until close to the end of the writing process.

CHRIS: the song Alpaca that was written as the same time as Guanaco, different energy but in the same vein and style. Never played live

WILL: Sin Salida that was included in an Instagram reel with a bunch of Super 8 footage

Q (syd1288): What's with the cover art of Creatures of Habit?

A: The cover was a collaborative piece done by Markus Puskar and Julian Brier, heavily inspired by the work of M.C. Escher

The songs on CoH have a lot to do with the monotonous liminal spaces in our everyday lives, and the lyrics are very character driven. The art is meant to invoke the illusion of a society that feels like it is going in loops and circles, in which we are becoming “creatures of habit.”

Q (regulus_di): What games are the guys into atm/pre-tour?

A: We love to play giant jenga and a card game called “Hanabi,” we also invented a pool game called “twenty ball” in which Will is the (heavily disputed) champion.

Chris is currently working through another play through of Dark Souls, he’s been tearing through it on the switch in the van. We’ve also played The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and a lot of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Stardew Valley and Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic are also big hits on the iPad.

Q (kalamaroe): What inspired the visuals in the If I Lead music video? I've always found it very hypnotising

A: Generally the band doesn’t like to be too specific with the meaning of the artistic content and likes to leave it more to interpretation from the audience. At the time that the video was shot, the band was interested in experimenting with old school classroom projectors, spinning images, double exposures in Will’s photography, and super 8 film footage. The goal was to add visual content to live shows, and a lot of the footage came from that effort.

Q (happidragon): What are the band members' favorite songs to perform?

WILL: it’s hard to pin down and is always changing based upon each performance, but Guanaco is always up there

CHRIS: it really depends on the show, Softy has been a favorite recently because of how dynamic it is, and Lovers of death is another that has been a longtime standard in the sets for that same reason.

MICHAEL: Underbelly, Softy and Lovers of death are all favorites. The dynamics and drum progression allows for a lot of exploration in each performance.

FEZ: Crazy because of the shaker and wood blocks, there are a lot of fun little percussion parts

SOUND CREW: Errasuriz is the most fun to mix, and is always right in the middle of the set when we really have things dialed in.

Q (gumibearheart): How do you guys approach music and the moving parts of it?

A: The writing process is slightly different for each song but tends to coalesce in a similar way, with lyrics typically coming later on in the process. Many songs that start as musical loops get jammed on in rehearsal and recorded as practice demos, the most exciting material eventually evolves into something worth returning to.

Q (starfunkbonnibel): What has been your approach in connecting all these sounds with the themes and stories of your songs? And are there any plans to do one continuous narrative in an album?

CHRIS: I think the soundscapes and by extension the “story” comes from whatever I’m interested in or experiencing at the time of writing. I start in one place, whether it’s a chords progression or an interesting ambient loop, and move in whatever direction feels most compelling and true. I find that a lot of ideas begin to link together because I tend to cycle back on ideas multiple times throughout the process. Because I’m working it out for myself. That goes for sounds, samples and progressions too. Overarching themes or the recurring “character” of the sounds and the places they evoke emerge as the process goes on, and in that is often a kind of story. Or many stories in a similar setting. I visualize things a lot when I’m writing.

In a sense, I think we already work “narratively,” it’s just that there’s not necessarily a script or a series of events. I’d like to make albums that exist in a specific space and create the context for meanings and patterns to emerge. Not a narrative per se. There are bands that do that well but I like to keep things more abstract.

Q (goldengoldstar): Although we know of the influence artists like Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra and Atahualpa Yupanqui have had on the music of Kiltro, are there any other artists or bands you might mention as big influences or inspirations?

A: Thanks to everyone who listens to and shares the Kiltro playlist! This is a stream of consciousness list from all the guys in the band in no particular order: Manu Chao, Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, Ween, Talking Heads, Jorge Ben, Radiohead, Damon Albarn, Thelonious Monk, Damu the Fudgemunk, Moses Sumney, Animal Collective, John Coltrane, Boards of Canada, Chico Trujillo, OutKast, Teke Teke, Travel Kit, New Order, Kraftwerk, Stereolab, Broadcast, Jack Canaan, Charles Mingus, Sonic Youth, Polo y Pan, Andrew Bird, Marvin Gaye, Metronomy, Sade, YĪN YĪN, Fela Kuti, Tortoise, Cocteau Twins, Air, and Erlend Øye.

Q (goldengoldstar): Are there any plans to play in Latin America?

A: No plans currently, but it’s definitely a long-term goal

Q (starfunkbonnibel): What are your favorite moments of experimentation during the making of Underbelly?

KYLE: During the production/recording process of Curicó (being one of the first songs Chris, Will, and I dove into, if I remember correctly) I was in the studio with Chris focusing on the song’s momentum. I believe this may have been before real drums were put down? Idk, can’t completely remember… but my goal in that session was to add excitement and some kind of uplifting drive to the song. In one moment, I was trying to think of a way to show Chris how we “could” add a particular energy to the song to see if he liked the idea/direction. I decided to give Chris an example by grabbing a shitty/lofi mic and shouting “HEY! HEY! HEY!.. etc” into the mic along with what we had recorded so far. And I was like, “that’s the kinda of energy I’m thinking we can add,” and then Chris was basically like… we should just keep that hahahaha. In that moment I personally felt like we or I at least had figured out a key to the energy of that song, and also my creative flow with Chris, Will, and so forth going forward. Not to mention the beginning of a great friendship 🙂 this was fun to write about! Thanks to everyone here for being a part of their music ✨🐕 This wasn’t about Underbelly, but it’s what the question made me think of lol sorry But still fits a vibe of how I think we all have fun working together on all the music 🙂
