Beryllium? I hardly know 'em!
I think I mentioned this in passing a while back, but it's an interesting anecdote and deserves its own post.
So you know that story about how during WWII, John W. Campbell – editor of Astounding Science Fiction Magazine – figured out that something fishy was going on at Lost Alamos when all the nuclear physicist readers changed their delivery addresses to New Mexico at the same time? My dad did something similar the 1980's.
He's a doctor, and he was doing his residency at [HOSPITAL REDACTED]. Over the course of a few months, he started getting patient after patient in acute respiratory distress, lungs chock full of weird granulomas, all of whom worked at [DEFENSE CONTRACTOR REDACTED].
At first, the patients were reluctant to share info about any occupational exposures. But once you've been choking on your own lungs for a while, disclosing a tidbit of Secret information suddenly doesn't seem like that big of a deal.
They all regularly worked with large quantities of beryllium.
(All y'all nuclear engineers in the room just realized exactly where this is going lol)
A few facts:
Beryllium is HIGHLY toxic. Even small exposures can cause a condition called berylliosis – all the symptoms mentioned above.
The concept of "workplace safety" had yet to be invented in the 1980's.
Beryllium is used as a neutron reflector in nuclear research.
So. That's how my dad figured out that [DEFENSE CONTRACTOR REDACTED] was working with fissile material just outside town lmao

my first time 😖
I’ve never done this on my phone before. Sorry it’s usually longer on my laptop. Orgo gods smiled on me. Floor person watching violins. Pet a kitten today. Man in my room doing nuclear engineering. I’ve started watching Chernobyl! Very good show.
sorry this didn’t last long. I’ll buy the freaky condoms they told us about in orgo lecture :(

Hello!
welcome to my little academic space :) i'm using this blog to romanticize university and hold myself accountable for studying. i'm also hoping to fill it with moodboards, quotes that resonante with me, and tips & advice for studying
A bit about me (she/her):
studying nuclear engineering (i switched from electrical engineering, so i'm technically a fourth-year but i'm staying an extra year to complete my degree)
Filipina, bi, occassionally my adhd will decide to rb things that are off-theme lmao

as a nuclear engineering undergrad, i can confirm that everyone on my research team talks about the Forbidden Pool at least once a week
You know what? I'm sick of it.
I'm sick and tired of pretending I don't want to float in
✨Cherenkov radiation✨

Look at that shit, it's perfect. I bet it feels amazing on the skin and organs. I bet it revitalises the pores. I bet it tastes incredible.

Don't listen to authorities, look at that colour, nothing that pretty could be bad for you.

If I had a nickel for every high security government nuclear prototype facility I've worked at that was literally right behind a trailer park, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

eeeew, tərfs and radfəms on my posts. leave me alone you creeps, you're fucked in the head for thinking i'd side with a community of hateful embittered strangers over all the wonderful trans friends and relatives in my life. i've had the pleasure of helping transfem friends come out and find confidence in their new identities and welcome them into the fun crazy chaos of femininity, and you want to turn me against them just because of one single coinflip their genome did over two decades ago? the fuck is wrong with you?

Think of magic as radiation and wizards as people with bachelors in nuclear engineering. Could such a person look at a chunk of metal and (without any special equipment) tell you if it was radioactive or not? No, they couldn't. But could the same person use certain clues to determine if it reasonably could be radioactive. (Did this chunk of metal come from a hospital? Is it part of a really old watch? Are there warning signs around? Is my hand warm? Are we inside a reactor core?)
Basically magicians could use arcana to determine if that glowing rune is magical or not, but not to sense magic in an area. Also detect magic is the fantasy equivalent of a Geiger counter.
No, you can't "do an Arcana check" to see if there's magic around. There's an actual way in the rules to see if magic is afoot, it's called the detect magic spell.
Also, ask me if you can do any kind of check again and I will bite your head off in real life.

Learned a bit about lead-cooled fission reactors the other day. Apparently you can like. Brick a lead-cooled nuclear reactor. If your core cools down or you spring a leak to air, the lead can solidify and Sorry but your reactor is now a solid brick. Of lead. Lol

You know one of the main reasons we should see polycules in fantasy stories? Consider settings where the ‘Power of Love’ is a real, tangible force.
Now just imagine the POWER a fully realized polycule could have.
Like we’ve seen just how much power can be generated by the love between a hero and a love-interest.
Now imagine if we take the love between the heroine and her GF, then add onto that the love between the heroine and her rival-turned-lover, AND the love between the rival and the aforementioned GF who are estranged childhood friends who have finally admitted their long-repressed feelings for each other.
Just turning a couple into a throuple potentially TRIPLES the number of potential love-generating links.
And that’s just with three people in a polycule.
A four-person polycule? That’s SIX times the potential power.
A five-person polycule is TEN times the power.
A six-person is FIFTEEN times.
You can see how this can get nutty VERY quickly.
Heck, imagine if in such a setting, the idea of polycules is initially ridiculed out of some belief that ‘love’ is some finite resource and a polycule is merely dividing up that power.
Only for the protag-polycule to prove this notion DEVASTATINGLY wrong.
