A MALICIOUS DAMAGE RECORDING -- MECHANIZING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE EAST COAST IN '81.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a promo/print advert for English post-punk/industrial rock band KILLING JOKE's 1981 USA Tour, promoting their then second studio full-length "What's THIS for...!." The advert also doubles as a "Tour Dates" flyer -- from the September 1981 issue of "NY Rocker" music magazine.
"This band would not just be a pleasure principle, it would have a social function, rather than something you put on when you get home from work. I guarantee that if you do that with a KILLING JOKE record, you'll lose your job. We knew we were different -- we were articulate and intelligent, yet we were portrayed as thugs, which admittedly there was an element of truth in."
-- JAZ COLEMAN on the ethos and underlying message of KJ

Dear Listeners,
Happy 2024 to you, in all its weirdness.
I’m working on NEW MUSIC and will be sharing little bits of it and my process with you as I go along. For now, I’m putting the videos on Instagram and my Facebook Page and will link to them on my blog (sorry I let that lapse, somehow I managed to forget blogging existed). Here’s the first, a snippet of a song with the working title “Supernumerary”
instagram
What else? There are a few concerts in the immediate future:
March 15 - ArtYard - Frenchtown, NJ
March 16 - Underground Arts - Philadelphia, PA
March 17 - Le Poisson Rouge - NYC, NY
March 21 - Big Ears Festival - Knoxville, TN
The show in Philadelphia is opening up for my old friends, the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. My connections to members of that band go back 20+ years to my 964 Natoma days. I first encountered Nils Frykdahl in the previous millennium while he was playing amplified flute in the rafters of the warehouse along with Dan Rathburn making noise and sparks with an arc welder that illuminated butoh performer Shinichi Moma Koga contorting himself on a metal grate. Anyway, Sleepytime is a delightful group of very talented avant garde art rockers and this year needs more of their unfiltered catharsis. I immediately said yes when they asked if I would play for one of their East Coast dates to support their new album.
The Big Ears festival is something I’ve wanted to play at for almost a decade, so I am beyond thrilled to be added this year. I’ll be sticking around for the festival to hear as many of the other artists as possible, it’s off the hook, check it out https://bigearsfestival.org/
More concerts dates are coming in the autumn. East, west, middle, as many as I can fit in ;-)
Thank you for listening!
celloly yours, Z

The High Rollin’ Rockers - interview to RP
Tumblr media
“I’m not exactly a sensible, thoughtful person, but I do love the feeling of being together with people. I love my work - communication on a vast level. My lyrics are more me than anything you’ve heard about me from the waist down.”

This is weird- it’s an 1885 home in Sharon Springs, New York, currently operating as the Bashful Rabbit Bed & Breakfast, but if it has a pink porch in the photos, it’s listed for $415K. Yet, on other realty sites, it has the porch repainted white and is listed for $530,055- that’s a big jump just for a white porch. It has 10bds. & 9ba.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They repainted the yellow/pink doorway and made it pink/green.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, the pink porch columns are now yellow, but they seem to have kept the pink rockers.
Tumblr media
Everything in the interior is still colorful - here’s the entrance hall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
B/c it’s a bed & breakfast, they have a huge sitting room with a pool table.
Tumblr media
Look at this, an old phone booth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The large kitchen is homey, but has some industrial elements for cooking for large groups.
Tumblr media
Look at the big rabbit in the dining room. Does he convey? He should, if the new buyer wants to keep the business.
Tumblr media
Cheery hallway to the bds.
Tumblr media
They’ve got a little exercise area for the guests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know if this is a little apt. that guests can rent, or if everyone can use it. Or, it could be the owner’s private quarters.
Tumblr media
On the uppermost level there are more bds.
Tumblr media
The rooms are all bright and colorful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each room has a different color scheme and an en-suite bath or shower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like this bathroom the best- how come they don’t all have rabbits?

Listen/purchase: Performative by Subsonic Eye
The new album from Singapore’s Subsonic Eye is up on Topshelf Records YT, Spotify, and Bandcamp.  =D
Let’s hear a couple tracks!  The rocker Performative opens the album with a hypnotic vocal, and What I Meant is jangly indie guitar pop:

New York Occult Rockers MAMA DOOM Reveal 'Ring The Bell’ Music Video
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Here's a track that gets better every time you listen to it. It's a ballade of sorts, a tale told of the longest night. "Ring The Bell" is the first single that emerged from 'Blood Salt Sacrifice' (2023) by MAMA DOOM, which dropped December 15th. Today, it gets the music video treatment and this Gratuitous Productions joint illuminates the story in a dreamlike way, where we are left to ponder its symbolism and puzzle together a meaning.
“Blood Salt Sacrifice," says the band, "tells a story that combines the eerie aspects of death and the undying with the enduring themes of love and power and Gratuitous Productions, led by Anne Terror and Grave Dave, wanted to create a Twilight Zone inspired video with ‘Ring the Bell.’ Most of the video was shot under the shadow of an ancient tree surrounded by several forgotten headstones. We set up a makeshift dreamscape which provided me with my own internal struggles because large spiders kept finding their way onto the sheets. There is always a lot of laughs and a whole lot of fun when making these videos, and we’ve got many more to come!”
"Ring The Bell" begins with a wavy Toolesque bass groove from Chuckie Rumbles, and the bass has a strong presence throughout the 3:34 runtime. This is paired with Anne Terror's vibrant beat and an otherworldly synth that has the feeling of ancient mystery about it. Like her keyboard playing, D.Lolli's vocals are well suited for the storytelling demands of the lyrics, supporting the narrative with a range of styles from serious and focused to dramatic and gnarly.
The underground New York trio released their third album on Interstellar Smoke Records, and it is a strange, haunting gem, weaving elements of doom metal with retro occult rock stylings (get it here). Stick Mama Doom on a playlist with Electric Wizard, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Saint Vitus, Castle, and Christian Mistress.
Give ear...

SOME BUZZ
Last heard in 2021 with the release of their sophomore album Ash Bone Skin N Stone; haunting hard-rockers Mama Doom return this month with their devastating new album, 'Blood Salt Sacrifice.'
Originally formed in Newburgh, NY in 2016, since the band’s 2018 debut, 'From Blue to Bone' (2018) the trio have traded in guitars for keyboards and ethereal vocals, and in doing so summoned the deepest of grooves from dominions below.
Blood Salt Sacrifice by Mama Doom
Finalizing that perfect union with crushing bass and drums, their sound might be familiar to fans of doom rock, but it also offers a strangely unfamiliar and unique tone, given its impressive component parts. Newly signed to Polish label Interstellar Smoke Records, 'Blood Salt Sacrifice' is a monumental tale encompassing the eerier aspects of death and the undying.
Traversing a spectrum that spans traditional blues, doom, and ego-death metal, Mama Doom’s 'Blood Salt Sacrifice' is a serious force to be reckoned with.

Random post but I feel like Clawdeen and Torelai would have similar fashion aesthetics- fierce chic -but they have opposite energies.
With Clawdeen, because she is a fashion designer, her fits would look more high-end, polished, & right-off-the-runway, though she still experiments a lot with color and textures. Lush fur, statement gold jewelry, avant garde makeup, and collection of iconic designer heels. Her designs are vibrant, bold, & trendy yet innovative. She would give ‘I can spend the night in the East Village, NY with my fellow lgbtq+ & poc creatives putting on a multimedia show for the community to showcase my work AND also look amazing wearing custom in the front-row of a Prada showcase at Paris Fashion Week’ vibes. She would also try to thrift and locally source her materials.
With Torelai, it’s this grungey, bedraggled, careless-but-not-really vibe. Nana rocker inspired chic. Like I went partying with the girls all night, fell asleep in my clothes and makeup, woke up and came straight to school. Hair and makeup is a mess but it just makes her look hotter; in a leopard print fur coat that has moth holes but it’s fabulously long and dramatic; lots of layered funky silver jewelry; and signature huge black platform boots with tons of spikes. And since the new animated series wrote her as now coming from a rich family, she would wear some Vivienne Westwood & Jean Paul Gautier.
Whereas Clawdeen’s fashion comes at you, Torelai’s is like stay the fuck away from me before I’ve had my three cups of black coffee because these claws aren’t just for show. Clawdeen is also intimidating but that’s because she’s just so effortlessly cool and stylish.

JUSTIN LOVE - Rockola (1984)
JUSTIN LOVE – Rockola (1984)
. “1984 second album by the ultra-cult ’80s NY rocker Justin Trouble. Only once out of a hundred times is the “undiscovered gem” tag appropriate… and this is the one. A lost treasure of early ’80s New York, the perfect blend of Johnny Thunders’s deconstructed raunch ‘n’ roll, the Modern Lovers’ romance rock, Alex Chilton’s twisted productions, and some deranged paisley-pop from an unknown…
