Hey guys check out this blender tutorial I made!
LOUD WARNING
So screwing around with editing software is huge fun.
I was in some sort of manic state when i made this. I laughed until my chest hurt. I am aware this is actually awful but I love this stupid thing so much.

Here's some more open source things you might find useful (I'm not sure if all of these are GNU though):
LMMS: Music production software. Move and stretch blocks for different notes, add instruments and FX, etc. Linux and Mac compatible.
Musescore: Open source notation software. Can be used for composition but requires a little more knowlege of music theory than LMMS. Linux and Mac compatible.
Audacity: Open source audio editing software. This is made for recording audio and editing existing audio. Bad choice for music composition alone. Linux and Mac compatible.
Krita: Art software. Meant for digital painting but with some photoshop stuff as well. Has some animation tools as well. Linux and Mac compatible
GIMP: Another image program, this one more focused on editing images rather than digital painting. Linux and Mac compatible.
Inkscape: Another art program, this one designed with vector graphics in mind. I'm not as familiar with this one. Linux and Mac.
Blender: Most of you probably already know this one. Focused on 3d modelling and animation but has some compatibility with a bunch of other things. Linux and Mac.
Kdenlive: Open source video editing program. A little more user friendly than trying to use Blender's. I'm not as familiar with this one. Linux and Mac compatible.
Obs Studio: This software is for livestreaming and recording videos on your computer. Linux and Mac compatible.
Mp3tag: This is for editing metadata of audio files. A little more niche in use, and not GNU AFAIK. Mac compatible but not Linux :-(
Opentoonz: The opensource 2d animation software developed and used by studio Ghibli. Has been used for the coloring and inking of most studio ghibli works since princess mononoke. Unfortunately has a slightly more restrictive license as it is not GNU (can't use it for "helping crime" so guess Making a Pipe Bomb with the Helpful Fox Senko-san has to be cancelled :^( ). Mac compatible but not Linux :-(

Hello! I absolutely love your blog, everything from your festival recounts to animation analysis and programming (one of tumblr's recommended posts was the one where you made your own rasteriser, and I liked your attitude in what I've read so much that I'm gonna attempt to conquer my 3-year-long grudge against using opengl during college and do something similar now that I'm a bit older and have no deadlines :D).
But anyway, I have 2 questions (sorry if there's easily accessible answers, tumblr search is not helping): 1. During your animation nights, does the screen stay black while everyone watches their own video while you provide commentary? I haven't caught any yet but maybe someday! And 2. do you have any youtube channels or just one-off video essays that you like that also cover animation/directors? Or, even programming lol.
Sorry for the long ask have a nice day!
hiii! i'm very touched that you like my dorky eclectic blog <3
For the Animation Nights, I just stream the video over Twitch from local sources on my computer, typically by playing the video in mpv and recording it in OBS. This is obviously not ideal from a video quality perspective, but it's the easiest way to watch video in sync without making everyone download files in advance. Then we all chat in the Twitch chat box (in large part to crack stupid jokes, it's not that highbrow lmao). I've gotten away with it so far!
As for youtube channels, I can recommend...
anime production/history (i.e. sakuga fandom)
SteveM is likely the most sakuga-fan affiliated anituber. He makes long, well-researched and in-depth videos on anime history, usually themed around a particular director or studio.
Pyramid Inu might be my fave anituber - very thoughtful analysis of Gundam, obscure mecha anime and oldschool BL and similar topics. tremendously soothing voice too.
The Canipa Effect does excellent deep dives into the production of specific shows, both western and anime. I appreciate the respect he gives to the Korean animators of shows like AtlA in particular!
Sean Bires's 2013 presentation on sakuga is pretty foundational to this whole subcultural niche, and a great place to get an introduction to the major animator names to know and significant points in the history of anime. unfortunately a couple of the segments got slapped down by copyright but the rest holds up!
animation theory (for animators and aspirants)
I'm going to focus here on resources that are relevant to animation in general, and 2D animation. if I was going to list every Blender channel we'd be here all week :p
New Frame Plus is one of the best channels out there for game animation, describing in tightly edited videos how animation principles work in a game context and analysing the animation of various games. highly recommend
Videogame Animation Study is similar, examining the animation of specific games in detail
the 'twelve principles of animation' (defined by Disney's Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas) remain the standard approach to animation pedagogy; there are various videos on them, but Alan Becker (of Animator vs Animation) has quite a popular series. I haven't actually watched these but many people swear by them! Dermot O'Connor expands the list to 21. Note that some of the terminology can be a little inconsistent between different animators - c.f. 'secondary motion'...
Dong Chang is an animator at Studio NUT, who produces a lot of fantastic, succinct videos on standard techniques in the anime industry, timesheet notations, etc. etc. Studio Bulldog, a small anime studio, are a good complement; they focus more on douga than genga and are generally a bit more traditional.
programming
big topic here, I'm going to focus on game dev and tech art since that's my field. but also some general compsci stuff that's neat
SimonDev - graphics programmer with a bunch of AAA experience, fantastic explanations of advanced optimisations and some of the more counterintuitive aspects of rendering
Acerola - graphics programmer who makes very detailed guides to a variety of effects with a very rapid and funny 'guy that has seen monogatari' editing style. When he's good, he's really good. His video on water is probably the best one I've seen (though I can recommend a couple of others).
TodePond - the most charming, musical videos about recursion and cellular automata you've ever seen. less programming tutorial and more art in themselves.
Ben Eater - known for his breadboard computer series, a fantastic demonstration of how to go from logic gates up to the 6502 with actual hardware. worth watching just for how clean he puts the wires on his breadboards like goddamn man
Sebastian Lague, Useless Game Dev - both do 'coding adventure' style videos where they spend a few weeks on some project and then document it on Youtube, resulting in a huge library of videos about all sorts of fascinating techniques. great to dive into
Freya Holmér - creator of the 'shapes' library, makes videos on mathematical programming, with gorgeously animated vector graphics. Her video on splines is a particular treat.
There are definitely many more channels I can recommend on these subjects, but I'll need to dig into my history a bit - unfortunately I need to rush out right now, but hopefully that should be good to be getting going with!

Y/N was in the middle of a flare that was worse than usual but still manageable. On weekend that Y/N is working Connor took an extra call and Ava got called in. Since both of them were there anyways they decided to go up to maternity to check on her. For once in months the board had barely any patients and more nurses than they knew what to do with so everyone was just sitting around chatting enjoying a nice weekend. Except everyone was feral and relaxed at the same time. Food and snacks all over the place, a couple girls dressing up the doll they have for small demos for med students, card games, online shopping for concert season and upcoming vacations, girls doing each others hair and a new nurse learning how to do IVs on another nurse. Not mention the day before someone had the bright idea to bring a blender to make flurries. That was earlier in the day but the blender was still sitting on the counter. 😂
Tumblr media
Feral and Fine
I’m going to try and get fee out just to tide you guys over whilst I’m still not well hopefully you guys love these and thank you for all the kind messages 🫶🏻
Summary: It’s rare for a maternity floor to be quiet. But today? The patient board is practically empty, the staff is overstocked, and for once—nothing’s on fire. Connor and Ava, both on call, head upstairs to check on Y/N, who’s mid-way through a rough but manageable flare. What they walk into isn’t a unit in crisis—it’s a sleepover with scrubs. Between doll makeovers, concert-planning, IV practice on each other, and the remnants of someone’s flurry-blender experiment, the unit is pure chaos. And Connor? He absolutely lives for it.
Tumblr media
It was just past 1:00 p.m. when Connor leaned back from the nurses’ station in the ED and glanced at Ava, who was rereading an abdominal CT with her brow furrowed.
“Board’s clear,” he said casually.
“Unnervingly clear,” she murmured. “Even radiology’s slow.”
Connor arched a brow. “Wanna check on maternity?”
Ava didn’t even look up. “I thought you were going up there regardless to check on her.”
“I was. Thought you’d enjoy the chaos.”
Ava finally cracked a smile. “Lead the way, Doctor Rhodes.”
The elevator opened to a symphony of music, chatter, and what suspiciously sounded like a blender.
Connor glanced at Ava. She deadpanned, “This is either going to be magical… or mildly OSHA-violating.”
The maternity floor was buzzing—but not with patients. The board had three active names. Three. And twelve nurses on staff.
It looked like a chaotic girls’ retreat collided with a hospital.
Snacks were everywhere—crackers, cookies, something that might have once been hummus. Half a dozen nurses lounged in the nurses’ station, one giving the demo baby a full makeover complete with baby glitter Crocs and a onesie that said Born to Slay.
A few were deep into a game of Uno, while others stood by the whiteboard online shopping for concert tickets.
Two younger nurses were attempting an IV start—on each other.
“Okay, I’ve got flashback!”
“That’s a vein, not a dartboard—ease up, Olympic Javelin!”
And in the middle of it all, perched on the low couch with a heating pad across her abdomen and a water bottle clutched in both hands, was Y/N.
Hair tied up, hoodie on, legs tucked under her. Watching it all like she was the queen of the madness. Her cheeks were a little flushed, telltale signs of her flare still visible—but she was smiling.
Connor softened instantly.
Ava leaned in. “This looks like a teenage slumber party… at a Level 3 OB unit.”
“They’re feral,” Y/N muttered dryly, spotting them. “But relaxed. It’s weirdly comforting.”
Connor came over and kissed the top of her head. “You okay?”
She nodded. “Cramping like hell, but stable. Heating pad’s doing work.”
Ava scanned the room. “Tell me you didn’t eat something from that,” she said, gesturing toward the blender still sitting on the counter.
“Oh no,” Y/N said. “That was for flurries yesterday. Bad decision. Sugar crash by 4 p.m. We all regretted it.”
One of the nurses looked up from her laptop. “We’ve been ranking concert outfits for this summer. You’re going to that 5SOS show, right, Y/N?”
Connor blinked. “Since when?”
“She’s going with Sophie,” Ava said immediately. “I heard about it weeks ago.”
Connor turned to Y/N, who just shrugged. “Didn’t think it’d survive triage between the cramping, the nausea, and your spreadsheet schedule.”
He raised an eyebrow. “I’m offended.”
Another nurse called out, “Hey Y/N, which Harry era is this outfit giving?” and held up a sequined tank top.
Y/N laughed—an honest, full sound—and that’s when Connor finally exhaled.
Her pain was still there, sure. But her eyes were bright, her voice was strong, and she was in her element.
Safe. Cared for. Among her people.
Later, when Ava and Connor rode the elevator back down, she glanced sideways.
“You’re weirdly fond of them,” she said.
“They keep her alive,” he replied simply. “And apparently… fashionable.”
Ava smirked. “You gonna try and stop the concert trip?”
Connor shook his head. “Nope. But I am packing her emergency concert med kit myself.”
