Telling a story takes guts.
It's only a matter of whose. When problems stir, someone has to rise to the occasion.

finally did it! again I never said this would be good. also I have no beta and didn't want to stick this in grammarly or anything so if something sounds off let me know. this is robin meeting janek (and faust) before she knows who he is as a human.
Robin is staying downstairs checking the inventory her aunt’s office has. Bandages, gauze, more bandages-
Suddenly, a howl pierces the air. “What the…” I didn’t expect any wolves around here. Robin slows down her writing, but if she doesn’t hear anything again…
Another howl is heard outside, a bit closer but definitely sounding a bit sad and more like a whimper if she’s honest. Robin slowly puts the checklist down and walks out of the stockroom before she even realizes she’s up.
She chuckles to herself. “I can’t help everyone and I don’t know how to treat an actual wolf. If it’s a werewolf they should have a pack to help them.” She hears a caw, sounding close to where the wolf - or werewolf - is outside.
Regardless, Robin steps away from the light switch, unable to turn on or off the lights, just in case she’s hearing a werewolf. Mythical creatures are well-known but they’re not always treated well. She doesn’t want to scare someone away or make them think she’s turning them away.
Thunk. It sounds like whatever is outside found the patio. It’s not raining anymore, but walking and laying on wet grass isn’t fun. Robin waits a little longer, expecting to hear claws tapping against the wooden ramp or steps but there’s nothing. There’s no way they’re just laying against the wood and not at least on the ramp.
A caw sounds outside, close to where the wolf must be slumped. If she didn’t know any better, she’d assume the bird is following the wolf.
She opens the door, not quite sure what to expect. There is a wolf laying against the steps, and what looks like a crow on the handrail. As she opens the door, the bird (a crow?) turns to look at her, seemingly exasperated at the wolf.
As for the wolf? The wolf looks sad, unkempt and exceptionally wet even though it really only misted earlier. The wolf turns to look at her, eyes sad but already turning away. Robin only saw the wolf’s eyes for a second, but she could already tell they were those of a werewolf. A different iris, a cornea, and a sort of intelligence that only werewolves have, not to mention their size and the clearly bipedal legs.
Normally she would already be stepping towards the werewolf, ready to treat them but taking even one step makes the wolf tense up before they slump again. The crow seems to shake their head at that. That’s… not something birds normally do. Not a familiar, but more intelligent than a regular bird. What else could they be? She shakes her head to dislodge the thought. They’re not that important.
“Hey there. Do you need some help?” Robin tries to be gentle and allows the wolf some space. Mythical creatures who have suffered tend to be more skittish than most. The low-lying paranoia mythical creatures have due to their nature was unfortunately right for them.
The crow caws again, bobbing its head like it understands her and is responding, while the werewolf curls up a little more and shies away from her. Again, the crow caws, sharp as if telling the werewolf pay attention or accept her help.
Robin nods her head, mind made up. “Alright. Don’t freak out but I can tell you’re a werewolf,” not the best thing to say since the wolf’s shoulders tensed up at that but at least they’re not running, “and this is my aunt’s veterinary practice. I’m certified to work with mythical creatures, including werewolves. I can tell you’re a bit banged up and I want to help you.”
The werewolf turns towards her, still looking hesitant but not quite as scared. The crow looks like they’d raise an eyebrow if they could.
“I can show you my certification and license if you’d like. I want you to be comfortable while I take care of some of those cuts. They look like they should be cleaned and no one should be in pain.”
The crow hops down from the handrail and heads towards the wolf. They warble and nudge the wolf, as if trying to get them to accept the help. The wolf huffs, then sits up as if to stand but stops before actually standing. They have a guarded look before glancing at the bird, then back to Robin.
She understands what the wolf thinks. “If you want me to treat you outside, that’s fine. I want you to be comfortable. I’m not sure what your bird-I think they’re a crow?- is to you. I don’t know what they are, but they’re important and want me to take care of you.” The bird huffs proudly, straightening up and looking quite proud. The wolf rolls their eyes at their bird and slowly sits up, waiting for her to start working.
Robin shakes her head. “I need to head back inside to grab supplies. If you- and your bird- want to come inside, I’d like that more. If you’re not, then at least sit on the steps. You don’t have to be on the ground.”
The bird nudges the wolf again, tilting their head as if to say see? I’m right as the wolf slowly gets up and walks under the awning while the crow hops up onto the handrail again. The wolf looks warily at the door, almost like they expect it to suddenly be closed in their face.
Robin tries to look the wolf in their eyes, but they don’t quite let themself look higher than her nose. “I’ll keep the door open for you so you can decide if you want to stay in or out, and to be sure I’m not leaving you.”
The wolf almost seems to smile at that. Oh what have you been through? Robin opens the door wider so she can step back inside and make sure the wolf and crow can see her. Before she turns, she stops suddenly to look back at the wolf. “Wait, do you have any allergies?” The wolf slowly shakes their head. Just to make sure, she also looks at the crow, who also shakes their head no.
“Alright then I’ll be back shortly. I would like to look you over, but at the very least I want to cover some of the scrapes you have. Sounds okay?” The wolf nods at that and the crow jumps back up on the handrail again before launching themself onto the wolf’s head, shuffling around their feathers once they land while the wolf just looks resigned.
Robin gently laughs at them, unable to ignore how they interact with each other. “Thank you for making sure your wolf here isn’t going anywhere before I take care of them.” The wolf grumbles at that but doesn’t run away, and the crow throws their head back and cackles.

More modern au because I've been thinking about it a little bit. Read more under the cut if you want.
Conne has a boring 9-5 office job.
In his spare time he does wildlife photography. He runs an account "Crows of Baldur's Gate" on Faerûn's #1 social media app (his following count doesn't exceed past 200).
Because his brother is also a musician in this au, he sometimes takes photos during his gigs.
Shadowheart works at an animal shelter.
Scratch is her dog.
Faust in this au is a rescue bird that cannot be released into the wild.
Astarion works at Cazador's law firm. Their biggest client is the world's most evil corporation - Iron Throne (CEO Elon Musk Enver Gortash).

My favorite little detail from this game is when you're walking around with your animal companion and kids lose their shit. They drop everything, run towards you and (in Corvus case, idk about the other animals, didn't check) throw the most adorable lines. Look:

At one point Mattis ran after me into the Shadow Curse and I got scared that it's going to unalive him kdfhgkjdhf. Anway, as a former urchin Connecticut Tav really likes the tiefling kids (and I'm sure they like the funny bird man too).
