Epilepticon Movie Marathon Anniversary
This is technically the 5th Anniversary of me going through and reviewing epilepsy media and, having accumulated 35 different films, I wanted to highlight 5 favorite films that I've covered. Cheers and here's to more marathons and for better rep overall!
The Sacred Disease (2016)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Angie from The Sacred Disease. She is a young woman with short blonde hair. She has several electrodes attached to her head and is staring off with a vacant expression. /end ID]
A phenomenal short film detailing a young woman going off her epilepsy meds and the horrors that she witnesses. The final shot still gives me chills.
The film is also free to watch on Vimeo here.
2. Silas Marner (1985)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Silas Marner as played by Ben Kingsley in Silas Marner (1985). He has dark hair down to his shoulders and is wearing a brown-grey suit and jacket with a grey neckerchief. /end ID]
A solid retelling of George Eliot's classic novel, this film follows Silas Marner, a cataleptic weaver, after he is banished from his church. Catalepsy, a potential symptom of epilepsy, is so rarely discussed and Kingsley sells the heck out of the scenes where he has seizures (without indulging in over-the-top dramatics) and the scenes where he's just a guy trying to survive after being abandoned by his religion.
3. One Day at a Time (1975) (Episode: Ann's Secretary)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Leslie, a young red-haired woman, sits at a secretarial desk, answering the phone. /end ID]
An episode from the show One Day at a Time (1975) where main character Ann needs to hire a secretary but fears that her new employee may have a drug abuse problem.
I loved this episode because it ended up subverting several of the clichés of "Very Special Episodes". Leslie is plucky and has a good amount of positive self-worth but also she would rather people think of her as a "pill popper" rather than as someone with epilepsy due to the negative stigma of being epileptic. Ann has to confront her unconscious ableism towards people with epilepsy and ultimately concedes that she can't get past it without a lot of effort on her part.
The episode felt more honest about how things really are, that a lot of people with epilepsy will struggle with and even deny being associated with the label of "epileptic" and that even people who are allies will similarly struggle with their own ableism.
4. Control (2007)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A silhouette of Ian Curtis (as played by Sam Riley) on stage. He's holding a microphone. /end ID]
A biopic on the life and death of Ian Curtis, lead singer for Joy Division. This film shows up on a lot of epilepsy media recommendations lists and rightfully so. Of all the epilepsy-related biopics I've seen so far, this film had the most mature handling of the subject matter, tackling difficult issues such as drug resistant epilepsy and how people can be negatively impacted by the side effects of medication.
5. Fast Color (2018)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Ruth as played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Fast Color. She has short brown hair and is wearing heavily worn clothes, with several tears in her blue jeans. She's walking alone down a dirt farm road while carrying a canister. /end ID]
Following Ruth, a woman with an unspecified seizure disorder that is negatively impacting her super powers, I just love that there's a superhero film out there with a main character that has seizures. That's not even representation you can find in actual superhero comic books!
Also: shout out to Electricity (2014). I've rambled about that film in the past but it always deserves more attention. A truly amazing film.

I love one day at a time (2017) as much as everyone else.
But I recently discovered the old odaat from the 70s. It has very little to do with odaat 2017 besides some similar premises and the same name. Anyway, I checked some episodes and clips out.
It was very funny! Maybe not as perfect at 2017 odaat, I mean times have changed, but I was genienly laughing several times!

Quarantine Asks!
Tagged by @milkymickeyway, thank uuuu!
🌿Where are you isolated? (Country or city too if you like)
at home in Copenhagen (though I still have to go to work every now and then so sadly not 100% isolated, but at most)
🌿 What are you currently reading or watching?
Currently reading Sarah Waters’ Tipping the Velvet and some fics. Watching so many different things (I’ve confusmed so many movies lately), but following the new eps of Killing Eve, B99, The Try Guys, soon will start ODAAT and I was watching Buzzfeed Unsolved, but the season sadly just ended.
🌿 If you can go outside what do you like to do during this time?
I only go outside when I have to walk my dog or when I have to go to work. I would like to start up on my trash-picking self-acclaimed “project” soon, though. And maybe go take pictures of a sunrise, since it goes up around 5:30am and not a whole lot of people are out at that time (I know since I work by the beach)
🌿 Any fascinating concept you’re studying?
Not really at the moment tbh :/
🌿 What kinds of acts of creativity/forms of art are you currently doing?
I have my moments of creativity and motivation here and there, quite often since the lockdown started, and I’ve been able to somewhat make use of it. I’ve written a lot lately and got around to draw some floor plans and a baby yoda lol
🌿 A song/s that resonates with your state of mind at the moment?
Oh man, I’ve luckily managed to listen to a shit lot of music since I’m not stuck in school for hours. I can really listen to music, as well (which isn’t so good with the sad songs, but I’ll manage). Expanding inspiration playlists as well. Choosing would be impossible, my mood’s always changing. I have been listening to a lot of 1975 lately, though, so maybe that’s as close an answer as it gets? Right now I’m listening to Macklemore though
🌿 Favourite impulsive/’bad’ coping techniques?
Staying up late, pulling at my creativity being more effective past midnight (and the internet being faster too, shhh)
Tagging: @hobiworldd @hamykia @kookiehyungie @dandelionmeadow @nenufair @ariukoart @elena-of-time @tomakehimfree @h-a-r-u-k-a @kurii-tsuu @siberia-04 @christehhastoomanyships @okicoma @cake-und-catz (tagging lots ‘cause I know many people need a break or are bored rn, stay strong y’all!)

ODAAT, PTSD, and Me
Just four days after my birthday, on March 14, 2019, Netflix announced the cancellation of the show One Day at a Time after three seasons. If you’re not familiar with the show, I highly suggest that you go watch it. It’s an insanely funny, clever show with a lot of heart. The sitcom follows a Cuban-American family through their lives as they deal with racism, PTSD, LGBTQIA+ issues and more.
The show premiered on Netflix in 2017 as a reboot of the original show with the same title from 1975. And it gained a rabid following of fans, though these fans weren’t enough for Netflix not to pull the plug. In a series of tweets, Netflix explained the cancellation, citing low viewership. However, Netflix urged the fans who saw themselves represented in the show not to think that Netflix didn’t support their identities.
I am one of those identities and I needed this show and the stories that this show was telling. In April of 2017, I was in a car accident, leaving me with PTSD and the fear of being a passenger in cars and the fear of driving one. I had panic attacks, flashbacks, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and disassociation all stemming from this one accident. I was hesitant to get help, though with urging from my loved ones, I did. But it was tough. The last time I had ever seen PTSD represented so clearly on TV was on The Legend of Korra, but no one ever said the words PTSD.
One Day at a Time never shied away from the fact that Penelope Alvarez, the matriarch of the Alvarez family and a military veteran, had PTSD, though the show always called it PTS instead. As viewers, we see Penelope suffer from her PTSD. We see her sink into depression, we see her have trouble sleeping, we see her struggling with flashbacks. And, most importantly, we see her getting help and support.
The episode that most stands out to me is the episode “Hello, Penelope” in season two. In it, Penelope stops taking her anti-depressants and going to group therapy for her PTSD and things go downhill for her. She becomes depressed, erratic, and angry, struggling with her daily life and relationships. In the end, Schneider, apartment landlord and honorary Alvarez, tells Penelope that the pills are something that she needs for the rest of her life even if she doesn’t want it, just like as a recovering drug addict, drugs and alcohol are things that he wants but can never have.
The year before this episode aired, I was convinced by my therapist to try medication to help stabilize my mental state and PTSD. Just like Penelope, I didn’t want to do it. I sobbed. I hated myself for not being able to cope without it. I hated myself for being so weak. I wanted to throw my pill bottles across the room. I’m pretty sure I did once. And I’m sure it could have helped. I took them consistently for a month, but to be honest, I couldn’t tell if they helped and the mental war that I was fighting by simply taking the medication was too much for me, so I stopped taking them altogether.
A year later, when I saw Penelope struggling the same way I did, I burst into tears. I saw myself in Penelope; in a lot of ways, I was Penelope. Someone out there understood, and it was happening on my laptop screen, nothing withheld. It was honest and it spoke to me. Even now, I can’t watch “Hello, Penelope” without shedding many, many tears. It validated my experience with PTSD, and if the episode had dropped during the thick of my own struggle, it might have even given me the strength I needed to continue taking my own medication. But I do know that should I ever need to go back to taking medication for my PTSD, I have the support of Penelope behind me. I can go back and watch that episode and I know it’ll give me the strength and courage I need to continue.
When Netflix cancelled One Day at a Time, I was upset. I wanted more of the Alvarez clan. I wanted to see Penelope grow and become better. I wanted to see Elena and Syd further their relationship. I wanted to see Schneider recover again long term and grow up. I wanted Alex to become the respectable young man that he was obviously going to be. I wanted to see more of this Cuban-American family that I saw so much of myself in. The show had so much more to give and they were let go before we could see what more they could do.
Not to mention that these characters and their identities are important. They mean something. They reach out to people like them, who see themselves in these characters. If they spoke to me, I know they spoke to thousands, maybe millions of other people.
Please stop taking these characters away.
Save One Day at a Time.

Reading (TV) Log #5 - One Day at a Time (Season 3) [Netflix]
February 12, 2019
Review: 4.5/5
Kellett, G.C., Royce, M., Lear, N., Garcia, M., & Miller, B. (Executive Producers). (2019). One day at a time [Television series]. Culver City, CA: Sony Pictures Television.
Summary
One Day at a Time is a remake of the 1975 sitcom of the same name. It presents a similar premise as its predecessor by focusing on a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles neighbourhood of Echo Park. The matriarch of the family is Penelope Alvarez, a single veteran of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. who now works as a nurse and attempts to balance her work, school and family together. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Penelope’s family and friends: Lydia, her mother; Elena, her daughter; Alex, her son; and Schneider, her landlord and friend. Together, they live life through the ups and downs of lower-middle class America and provide support to one another through each step.
Relation
Its direct relation is the 1975 sitcom of the same name, but this multi-cam sitcom will be most familiar to viewers of standard primetime sitcoms or those found on youth-targeted channels such as Disney. Similar shows are Modern Family (2009), Cristela (2014), Jane the Virgin (2014) and Ugly Betty (2006).
Appeal
While it is presented in a traditional model of television that has been a staple for decades, the originality and freshness of ODAAT’s storytelling is where it shines. The show has been praised for its handling of LGBTQ+, immigrant, mental illness, racism, and sexism topics through careful handling and valuable treatment of its characters. Each member of the show is presented as a dynamic, fully-realized character that possesses depth not typically found in sitcom stereotypes. Furthermore, its diverse cast represents a true American experience compared to most television productions.
Audience/Readership
One Day at a Time is a family sitcom that is suitable for young children from around the age of 12 and up. Some of the subject matter is much darker than typical sitcoms, such as the handling of a substance abuse situation experienced by one of the characters towards the end of the season, but it is handled dutifully and respectably by the storytelling. It is the perfect show to watch by families together to see and discuss difficult topics that may come up in everyday life with humour and love.

Note
Netflix's One Day At A Time is inspired by Normal Lear's 1975 show of the same name. I haven't gotten a chance yet to watch the new ODAAT but it looks really good from what I've seen from Tumblr, and I do suggest checking out the original because it was fantastic.
Oooh, hella! Thank you to everyone letting me know about this cool lookin’ show today :DD

Epilepticon Movie Marathon 2023
One Day at a Time (1975) (Ann's Secretary) dir. Herbert Kenwith
Summary: Ann hires Leslie Cook as a new workplace secretary but suspects she may have a drug abuse problem.
Representation: Leslie is revealed to have epilepsy two-thirds of the way into the episode. There is foreshadowing of her condition throughout the episode. She is first shown taking a pill with water before her job interview. Later, she seemingly appears to "space out" while on the job, ignoring phone calls and staring blankly ahead. While Ann sees this moment as confirmation of her suspicions that Leslie is abusing drugs, she is in fact having a stress-induced absence seizure.
Leslie's epilepsy diagnosis is revealed to Ann by Leslie's friend Julie, who does so without permission from Leslie. While Julie shared this information to save Leslie from being fired from her job, she is still called out for giving someone else's medical information.
There is a lot of discussion in the final act about the need for secrecy while living and working as a person with epilepsy. Both Leslie and Julie comment that Leslie is fine being considered a "pill popper" among her peers because to her, it has less of a negative stigma than being epileptic. Even Leslie's mother chooses to ignore her daughter's epilepsy diagnosis as she considers it too shameful.
The episode provides some basic information regarding epilepsy such the current population number of people living with epilepsy in the United States and how it isn't a disease and therefore is not contagious.
[Image ID: Four screenshots from One Day at a Time (1975) Episode Ann's Secretary:
Image 1: Leslie, a red-haired woman in a white shirt with a pink vest, gives a slight smile.
Image 2: Ann, a woman with short strawberry-blonde hair, smiles at something off-screen.
Image 3: Julie, a brown-haired teen girl, crosses her arms in frustration as her mother Ann talks to her, also looking frustrated.
