“Why Is Taylor Re-recording Her First Six Albums?” — A Much-Needed Refresher

. 1. The masters of her music were sold — NOT JUST to anyone, but to her NEMESIS. This isn’t a simple “she should’ve read her contract” (when she was 15 y/o) scenario. And this isn’t even some “many artists don’t own their master rights anyway, she isn’t special” thing. We and Taylor are perfectly aware of that. That’s why she had, FOR THE LONGEST TIME, offered to buy the master rights of her first 6 albums from her former label, Big Machine Records (BMR), at reasonable price and conditions. However, BMR repeatedly refused, with their latest “offer” in 2018 requiring her to renew her contract — and with each new album UNDER THEM (i.e., BMR would’ve owned those new albums), only by then would each of her old albums be “set free” (allowed to be bought by Taylor) in exchange. BMR essentially wanted Taylor and her music to be HELD HOSTAGE, with her new albums being the “ransom” — for merely a CHANCE to buy her old albums (something that should’ve been allowed unconditionally) — and thus WOULD’VE chained Taylor into an ENDLESS LOOP/CYCLE. Taylor, like any sane person (especially someone who write every single song in her discography), refused. 2. It was later exposed that, BEHIND HER BACK, her former record label sold her masters (as well as the company) NOT JUST to anyone, but to her absolute nemesis — Scooter Braun (with the notorious Carlyle Group as one of Scooter’s financiers). The man who orchestrated the entire 2016 KimYe debacle, having been Kanye’s former manager (reportedly fired by A.G., D.L., and J.B. very recently). The person who paid countless tabloids before, during, and way after 2016 in an elaborate demolition job to tarnish Taylor’s reputation. 3. Despite Scooter’s lies (of him “offering to sell” Taylor’s masters back to her), it was later exposed that the said offer was ONLY to be allowed to look at BMLG (the record label company)’s financial records, merely the first step in a purchase of this nature — and what did Scooter want in exchange JUST FOR THIS? He wanted *the* Taylor Swift to sign an ironclad NDA stating she would never say another word about Scooter unless it was positive. LMFAO. He really wanted to bind, trap, and silence Taylor forever before even giving her a CHANCE to bid on (not buy) her own work. The songs and albums SHE put her sweat and tears into for over a decade. Her legacy. Her life’s work. Taylor’s high-profile legal team advised that this was NOT normal (and that they’d never seen an NDA like this presented unless it was to silence an assault accuser by paying them off). That NDA that Scooter was demanding (just for Taylor to be given a chance) was THAT vile. Such an exploitative move on so many levels. The said new entity/company tried to be in talks with Taylor (again, still NOT to outright sell her the masters nor anything actually good), which she respectfully declined since she couldn’t, in good conscience, agree to something that would indefinitely benefit Scooter — the man who actively and continuously attempted to destroy her character, her reputation, and everything she has worked for (years before, during, and even after this entire issue). 5. EVEN TODAY, Scooter is slowly creeping in, curating and planting seeds of misinformation in his staple tabloids, waiting for the perfect opportunity to claw his way back to the top, reverse the narrative to his favor, and bury the woman who he THOUGHT he could subjugate but then ultimately prevailed over him, as evident now more than ever.

Anyway I feel like, I've been obsessively watching the production unfold for the past year and I kept getting so many red flags like there's been so many odd comments and little sexist quips, the complete misunderstanding (or lack of fucks) about what Claudia is supposed to mean in the story, etc. I just keep getting aggressive CISHET MAN vibes from this team and the lens they read VC through.

And yknow what, fair whatever I guess, we all read different versions of the same book and they're the ones that got to make it. But idk I like VC for the dark elegant spooky existential angst, I didn't need it to be gritty and open up with shit jokes. And five episodes in I didn't need it to use outdated, dangerous rape tropes and I also don't need it to oversell the domestic abuse. (Hint: Lestat was already abusive as fuck from the moment we met him, don't oversell!)

It's an okay show lmao. It's not recognizable as VC at all except that it recycles the names. None of the characters have been accurate so far. Even Lestat, where Sam Reid is doing so many fun things with his delivery and mannerisms that almost seem like Lestat, is just so fucking OOC and a caricature and just really lacks the depth and nuance and sensitivity of who he is in the books.

If you can turn your brain off and not look at it as VC there's some fun moments, but it's also full of continuity errors and just plot holes and bad writing when you look too close, so don't try to analyze it too hard or you'll have a bad time lol. Even the stuff that's really interesting and that they get right, they tend to lose interest in and drop, or they mix it into so much vampire soap opera shenanigans that it's hard to walk away knowing what the episode is actually about. It's just. Woof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not the ship itself, really, but the stans behind it. I've never had the displeasure of meeting an entire group in a fandom in my entire life. It's actually amazing how that group of fans could make me hate words ("radiant") and also an entire character.

I'd like to turn my attention to precisely why I like and ship Jonrya. Both Bran and Jon have made comparisons between Arya and the women of their affections. I personally think it is bizarre to compare any love interest to a sibling, but their thoughts show the "normal" way to go about it rather than...well...the other way.

This, to me, is the normal way:

Jojen was so solemn that Old Nan called him "little grandfather," but Meera reminded Bran of his sister Arya. She wasn't scared to get dirty, and she could run and fight and throw as good as a boy. She was older than Arya, though; almost sixteen, a woman grown. (Bran IV, ACoK)

These are not:

Ygritte watched and said nothing. She was older than he'd thought at first, Jon realized; maybe as old as twenty, but short for her age, bandy-legged, with a round face, small hands, and a pug nose. Her shaggy mop of red hair stuck out in all directions. She looked plump as she crouched there, but most of that was layers of fur and wool and leather. Underneath all that she could be as skinny as Arya. (Jon VI, ACoK)

And:

She wasn't wed and her weapon of choice was a short curved bow of horn and weirwood, but "spearwife" fit her all the same. She reminded him a little of his sister Arya, though Arya was younger and probably skinnier. It was hard to tell how plump or thin Ygritte might be, with all the furs and skins she wore. These are incredibly odd and I'm not sure how or why anyone would find no issue with these passages. And not only does Jon think these things, but he thought of how stubborn Ygritte was compared to Arya and wondered if she was ever his sister. This is proper build-up for a change to their relationship should George continue to go that route.

There is also the infamous Balticon report SSM where George says this in regards to the Ygritte/Arya comparisons Jon makes:

It's a reference to a certain physical type, and a certain indication of what Jon finds admirable.

*Why,* pray tell, is his type, physical or otherwise, Arya? (And how did George get away with saying that lmfao?)

George also included these choice quotes:

It was also brought to my attention that though Ramsay makes all of those impossible demands, the one that Jon *really* focuses on is Arya, the *bride.*

So, in exchange for Mance, Ramsay says that he wants Selyse ("the false king's queen"), Shireen and Melisandre ("his daughter and his red witch"), Val ("his wildling princess"), Monster ("his little prince, the wildling babe"), and Theon ("my Reek"). He even threatens to cut out Jon's heart and eat it if he refuses to comply. But what is it that he focuses on before he decides to change the plan?

He thought of Arya, her hair as tangled as a bird's nest. I made him a warm cloak from the skins of the six whores who came with him to Winterfell…I want my bride back…I want my bride back…I want my bride back…

Jon, also, thinks of the first lesson he gave her when he was overwhelmed with pain. That is important, perhaps a callback to Rhaegar dying with Lyanna's name on his lips.

Jon's despair for Arya and her marriage is palpable in his ADwD chapters, which really does tie in to the "deadly rivalry" aspect of the original outline, as well as the inclusion of "anguish" over being unable to help. (The circumstances are not exactly the same, but were still implemented, which is why the Jon/Arya/Tyrion love triangle from said outline was shifted to Jon/"Arya"/Ramsay.)

What annoys me the most is that all of this, literally all of it, is ignored in favour of Jonsa, who he has very little connection with. There's a reason why he thinks of Sansa last when he bunches her with Bran and Rickon, and it's because he's not as close to her as he is with the others. Robb and Bran are special to him, but Arya is the most special of all.

He missed his true brothers: little Rickon, bright eyes shining as he begged for a sweet; Robb, his rival and best friend and constant companion; Bran, stubborn and curious, always wanting to follow and join in whatever Jon and Robb were doing. He missed the girls too, even Sansa, who never called him anything but "my half brother" since she was old enough to understand what bastard meant. And Arya…he missed her even more than Robb, skinny little thing that she was, all scraped knees and tangled hair and torn clothes, so fierce and willful. Arya never seemed to fit, no more than he had…yet she could always make Jon smile. He would give anything to be with her now, to muss up her hair once more and watch her make a face, to hear her finish a sentence with him. (Jon III, AGoT)

This is why he is reminded of her with people he cares for.

  At around noon one warm day, Ren is organising the bookshelves around the enchanting table inside Renchanting. Business has been slow today, but perhaps that’s just as well. There haven’t been any deaths in the last couple of days, so the only traffic Renchanting has seen is Impulse coming to enchant another set of diamond armour as a backup. Ren is starting to feel a little lonely; as great as Martyn is to have around, he’s often so focused on his work that he’s not great for conversation. 

  Eventually, he gets bored with his task and wanders outside. To his shock, he spots Scar coming in through the door and automatically reaches for his sword. 

  “Hi, Ren!” chirps Scar, approaching him. “How’s it going?”

  “What do you want?” Ren demands. 

  Scar pouts. “That’s not a nice hello.”

  “You’re not a nice person at the moment,” retorts Ren, before raising his voice to call over his shoulder. “Martyn!”

  “Oh, he’s not here.”

  Ren tightens his grip on his sword. “Where’s Martyn?”

  “Grian’s taken him to the desert to discuss a “business deal”.” Scar makes air quotes over the last two words. “So it’s just the two of us.”

  “Okay… What do you want? A truce?”   “Oh, I’m here to kill you.” 

  Scar’s words strike fear into Ren, who immediately backs away a few steps. “Wh-What? 

  “I’m just kidding!” laughs Scar. “Just kidding.”

  Ren maintains eye contact, ready to run at any moment. “I’m not so sure you are. You ARE unstable enough to just walk in here and slice me in half, though.”

  “Aw, no, Ren. I would never hurt you.”

  “You’re holding a lava bucket in one hand and a diamond sword in the other.”

  “Oh.” Scar glances down at his hands. “So I am. What are you gonna do about it? I’ll remind you that I’m the red name here so you can’t hit me if I don’t hit you first.”

  Ren grips his sword with both hands, holding it in front of him. “Scar, get out. I have the right to defend what’s mine, whether it be my life or my business.”

  “Not if I don’t attack first,” says Scar, grinning maliciously. “Put your sword down and I’ll consider mercy.”

  “No! You’re crazy!”

  “Put the sword down,” Scar repeats. “It’s better for you in the long run.”

  Ren hesitates. He doesn’t trust Scar as far as he can throw him, so anything Scar says is worthless to him. Except his threats. Those are very real. 

  “Will you be happy if you kill me?” he snaps. “Will you finally be happy? Will that finally be enough?”

  “Nothing’s ever enough for a red lifer. I won’t be happy until you’re on red, just like me. You and your employee Martyn of course, but he’s too smart for me. That’s why I had to split you guys up. He’ll be much easier to kill on his own.”

  Ren’s blood runs cold. “No…! G-Grian’s green; he can’t just murder Martyn!”

  “He’ll do anything I tell him to,” responds Scar casually. “He has to.”

  Ren is still slightly doubtful but he wouldn’t put anything past Scar. He knows he and Martyn are in terrible danger and he has to go save his friend.

  If Scar lets him out of here alive.

  “You… um… You mentioned mercy?” he says hesitantly.

  “I did!” Scar beams innocently. “Just put down your sword.”

  After a long hesitation, Ren lowers his sword and tosses it away.

  Scar’s smile turns dark. “Excellent. Let’s shake on it.”

  He holds out his hand. Ren automatically reaches for it, but Scar abruptly snatches it away and strikes his flint and steel, creating a burst of flame that burns Ren’s hand. 

  Crying out in pain, Ren takes off running towards the door. Scar doesn’t follow him, and when Ren flings open the doors, he sees why.

  Four blocks of obsidian block the double doors. With his iron pickaxe, there’s no way Ren can mine them in time. 

  Heart now pounding out of his chest, Ren turns and flees towards the back door. He hears Scar curse and some hope returns to him; clearly, Scar hadn’t known about the other door. 

  Ren bursts out of Renchanting and dashes towards the desert. He doesn’t care that he’s running right towards Scar’s domain; he has to get to Martyn and make sure he’s okay. 

  Out the corner of his eye, he spots an ender pearl land just in front of him. A second later, Scar appears and drops lava directly in front of him. 

  Ren skids to a halt and scrambles back, but the lava has already set the tree behind him on fire, causing the flames to burn his entire right side. 

  “Give it up, Ren!” comes Scar’s thundering voice through the flames. “Come to me and die quickly.”

  Ren doesn’t reply. Forcing back tears and cries of agony, he continues running away from Scar, but his progress is slower now; his right leg feels like it’s on fire. He won’t make it to the desert now, but the village is fairly close. Maybe he can seek refuge there. 

  Soon, he spots the top of Bdubs and Cleo’s castle and realises he’s nearly there, though he’s taken an odd path. His limbs all either ache or burn; he can’t keep going much longer. The pain is starting to overwhelm him. 

  He slows as he reaches the drawbridge, his vision growing fuzzy. 

  “Who’s out there?!” comes Bdubs’s voice distantly.

  “It’s Ren!” Cleo’s voice calls back. “He looks hurt, Bdubs!”

  As soon as Ren takes one more step towards the drawbridge, his knee buckles under him and he collapses.

  He’s unconscious before he hits the ground.

…

  “-at happened?!” 

  “We don’t know, dude! All we saw is him running towards the castle and collapsing right in front of the drawbridge. There didn’t seem to be anyone chasing him but he’s burnt pretty badly.”

  “Oh my god…”

  Ren groans softly as he forces his eyes open. Blinking against the light and his still-fuzzy vision, he struggles to sit up.

  “Whoa, hey, what d’you think you’re doing?” comes Cleo’s voice. 

  “Martyn!” cries Ren, reaching out blindly. “Martyn, are you here?”

  Two hands clasp his. “I’m here, boss,” comes Martyn’s reassuring voice. “Are you okay? What happened?”

  “I…” Ren hesitates. “I don’t…”

  “You got attacked, right?” Martyn grasps his shoulder. “You remember? You got attacked. Tell me who attacked you.”

  “S-Scar.”

  Martyn nods slowly. “I knew it. Grian spilled everything to me.”

  “If you knew what happened all along, why did you yell at us?” snaps Bdubs.

  “I just wanted to make sure you weren’t involved,” Martyn responds. “I’m sorry. All jokes aside, Ren is my strongest ally on this server and I need to make sure I understand what’s going on with him at all times.”

  After a moment, Bdubs nods. “Okay, fine. I’m gonna go keep watch.”

  “Martyn, are you alright?” Ren asks, as Bdubs leaves the room. “Grian didn’t hurt you, did he?”

  “No, don’t worry,” Martyn assures him. “He eventually straight-up admitted he was just distracting me so Scar could go kill you, but by the time I got back home, you’d already gone. I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have let him take me away from you for so long.”

  Ren shakes his head. “It’s not your fault. I’m just glad you’re okay.” 

  Martyn smiles back. “Same, boss. I think we may need some better defences, though.”

  “Yeah,” Ren chuckles, before spotting Cleo hanging around in the background, watching them with her arms folded. “Oh, Cleo, um… Thanks for saving me. Sorry for all the trouble.”

  “Don’t worry about it,” replies Cleo kindly. “It was actually really scary to see you collapse out there; we had no idea what had happened.”

  “Scar didn’t turn up, did he? He was chasing me for a while there.”

  “No, we never saw him.”

  “Okay, good.” Ren shivers. “It was terrifying, Martyn. He tried to make a deal with me, then he burned my hand and-.”

  He breaks off as he lifts said hand and finds it wrapped in bandages. “Wait…”

  “Bdubs patched you up,” Cleo explains. “I helped a bit but it was mostly Bdubs.”

  “Oh. I really need to thank him too. And I hope Scar doesn’t make trouble for you two for helping me.”

1) my muse’s initial impression of yours: Probably originally saw him typing away at one of the tables. Or mayhaps she saw him reading quietly in the back of the shop, behind some bookshelves she typically never sees anyone behind. I’d like to think they’d have known each other a good year or a few months before their fake marriage ruse. So she still would’ve been in the process of getting out of her marriage and all the stuff that came with it. Maybe even would’ve been arguing with Jack, so she was so taken back by Eli not being a jerk towards her and asking her opinions on books and things that interested her. Opposed to, you know, not caring? She basically liked that he listened to her, to be honest.

2) my muse’s favorite physical attribute of yours: Claudia likes his hands. She’s usually odd about touching, but she likes when he touches her in any way. And she likes messing with his hands. Even when they’re friends, she rests her hand on his shoulder or offers him a gloveless hand in a loud and busy environment. But when they’re romantically a couple, she likes offering her hands to him often. Or she likes when he caresses her cheek.

3) my muse’s favorite personality attribute of yours: She likes that Elijah sees people? I remember you bringing this up. And that’s something Claudia does, too. Except it’s probably in a different way. But still, she likes that he sees people. Especially since he sees her for her, and not as some concept. Like he sees past her façade she uses to get people to like her and it's shocking at first but nice

4) a moment that made my muse realize how much they care about yours: I’d say Claudia was too stressed and confused to immediately fall in love Elijah when she first meets him, but she fell for him one day, when she was closing shop and everyone left and he was still there after the two of them sat down at a table to discuss random things. Like she liked hearing him talk, and again, liked that he listened. And it sort of hit her that she really liked him more than she was supposed to.

5) something my muse never found the words to say to yours: God, Claudia has letters upon letters on things she wanted to say to Eli when they are fake married. I might write it as a 5 times thing because that might be fun and I get a kick out of first person writing. But most of what she wants to say to him is that she loves him as more than friend and that she appreciates how good he is with rory.

6) something my muse wishes they had never said to yours: I don’t know, honestly, even though Claudia can be a class a liar when she wants to be (due to the family she was raised by) she’s pretty honest with Eli. The worst thing she’d probably say is that she’s okay with him divorcing her a little after she has full custody of Rory. She’d be lying 800% and would regret it immediately because she would hate divorcing Eli. Also I can totally see them somewhere, a girl flirting with Eli and her just being like “It’s fine, we’re not a real couple anyways” and regretting saying as much immediately because she cares so damn much.

7) something your muse does that makes mine feel safe: just generally being there and listening means the world to claudia. like he just shows her support in a world where not many people show support for her. That’s more than enough.

8) something your muse does that makes mine smile: Pretty sure Claudia likes to find him book recommendations for her favorite books, or just quotes. And in general, when she’s comfortable around someone, Claudia can be silly. So I can see her making a dumb joke that’s so bad that he has to laugh due to the wtfery of it all. Because she feels uncomfortable and does not want conflict.

It's been over a century since I last shared an OC of mine properly here, so here's another one of em, lmfao. This little fella has slowly become one of my more favorite ones mainly because he's kind of a representation of what I was like (well, aside from his backstory) before I grew into the more social and outgoing person that I turned into mid high school, so I have a special place in my heart for him. Anyways.

Personality: Aoyama is a humble and caring boy, one that shows a lot of will to prove that he's harmless and won't pull anything suspicious. He has a genuinely kind heart, one willing to reach out to others when he has a chance to do so. Despite this though, Aoyama isn't all that he seems.

He has his own insecurities due to a lack of social interaction growing up and a lack of attention and affection ever being given to him, and thus isn't exactly the best when talking to people. His thoughts and his words, while self-deprecating at times, may contrast with occasionally selfish actions to try and survive, and thus leads to Aoyama's fear of being seen as self-centered by others.

Despite this though, Aoyama truly does try to make himself look as trustable as possible and tends to act on the good side, but his desire to survive can overcome this, and while getting close to him isn't a particularly hard task, it takes a while for him to actually open up to his problems, being rather timid. Gaining his full trust can make him very attached to you though, as he values someone who he thinks won't just abandon and hurt him as incredibly saintlike, and goes out of their way to defend them, even if said person truly is in the wrong. That can be a good or bad thing depending on who he ends up giving his full devotion to.

(Backstory coming up is kind of long and has some content warning for abuse, so I'll just point that out. It's nothing too complicated, you can summarize it in 2-4 sentences if you wanted to, but I thought I'd make his backstory more detailed.)

Backstory: Aoyama lived in an abusive and poor household growing up, his parents taking out their frustration over their situation on him, claiming that their lives wouldn't be as miserable if he weren't born.

They would constantly shelter him and refuse to ever let him out of the house despite constantly seeing other kids enjoying and living their life, and being someone who got the bare minimum in education via homeschool, he was incredibly inexperienced with talking to people, and to some extent, stil is. As a matter of fact, to this day, Aoyama hasn't even graduated middle school.

His parents would berate and get on his case whenever he made even the slightest mistake; and when he makes a larger scale one, his parents would beat him with a belt to discipline him, and this only grew his hate, for them and his want to go out even further.

One night, Aoyama simply couldn't take it any more and snuck a bag with clothes, what little money he had along with a generous amount of what his parents' wallet had and a basketball along with himself outside of the house at night and never returned ever again.

Once he left the house and had no one but himself to look out for himself, he had to turn to playing basketball on the streets to keep himself entertained and sane. But it was clear to him that he wasn't going to survive since he'd just run out of money sooner than later. So, he decided that the only way to really live is to play with other people at basketball, and gamble his money to get paid.

However, due to his small size and dirty clothes/look, he'd get picked on by bigger kids and he'd get pushed around and hurt a lot, his life became a constant competition where he had to constantly come out on top in the harsher, more physical street basketball environment he had to grow up in to pay for the food and drinks he needed just to live. But his talent for basketball from his speed, stamina, and technique would always help him defy odds and come out of matches richer.

Every day was a battle with other kids and every day he had to spend his money wisely and make sure no one would try to steal it from him; he was constantly paranoid of people staring at him like an outcast and he'd only trusted those he played with on the courts. His life for more than half a decade was just physical and bruising streetball that had him have to put his body on the line just to sustain himself in the streets. His only company during those times were stray cats, and the occasional teammates after ball games that he'd share a cola with.

One day while he was looking for a new street to stay in though, Aoyama participated in a larger scale street ball tournament outside of his home town, and he came out of nowhere as an underdog to win, defeating a mountain of larger names in the street ball genre and gaining recognition around the area. He was recruited into a major street ball team and after they learned that Aoyama literally had no place to stay in, he was allowed to sleep in the team bus + the team's dugouts/dorms.

Ever since then, his life has significantly improved, at least by his standards, he's travelled across the country with his teammates, he's gotten just the tiniest bit better at talking to people, though he's still a rather introverted and timid mess when outside of the playing court. His current goal is to win a bigger tournament with his team and use the winnings to come back to his parents and apologize for stealing the money he took from them when he left the house, despite all the abuse that he took from them, he wants to hope that they've changed when he comes back. That's what his wish and hope is.

Extra/s: His preferred position on the court is shooting guard, although due to his height, he ends up getting pushed into the point guard position more than he likes to admit.

He bought his jacket after he got recruited by his current team. Before that, all he wore were white shirts and shorts that he'd buy from low quality stores and toss out after a week because they got dirty.

His body is actually pretty muscly since he had to work on it to not get pushed around and hurt as much when playing street ball, but there are still some present scars on his torso, some caused by his parents' abuse.

7: Least favorite location?

generally? most of the locations on Mechonis; after how diverse each new location on Bionis was, it felt like a bit of a letdown for each new area to have similar aesthetics and enemies. i cannot for the life of me differentiate between Galahad Fortress or Mechonis Field or Central Factory.

specifically? the Ether Mines. i played through that entire stretch of the game in, like, a 6-hour sitting, and kind of burnt myself out a lil towards the end.

9: Favorite part of the story?

gotta be Mechonis Core! even though i expected ~something~ to happen i was in NO WAY prepared for what was to come. the way that it completely flipped everything you thought you knew about the world and the story of the game on its head and just kept delivering sucker punch after sucker punch .... i had to pause the game to scream into a pillow afterwards.

36: Least favorite game mechanic?

oh definitely the timed quests, while i love that they reflect the way that the game’s world is changed by the events of the story, i stressed myself tf out trying to complete as many of them as quick as possible bc i didn’t want to look up when they expired and risk spoiling myself but i also didn’t want to lock myself out of them. i definitely burnt myself out a little bit on Bionis’ Leg because of it, and i think i missed a few late-game ones because by that point i was just so tired of timed quests and just wanted to get on with the story lmfao

41: How did you come to know Xenoblade Chronicles?

oooh thank you for asking this one, i think it’s quite a cool story!! i’d just started watching Chuggaaconroy’s LPs back in 2014 when he started his playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles, and i watched maybe the first episode or two before i realised that, fuck, maybe this was a game i really needed to play through myself. dumb bitch highschool me forgot about the tiny lil detail that i didn’t own a fucking Wii -- but then the 3DS port was announced! so i was like okay, i’ll get the 3DS version. except it was specifically for the New 3DS, and i only had an original -- so i figured i would wait a bit, save up some money, and grab a New 3DS when i went to upgrade my old one. except, so few (new) games were announced for the New 3DS that i couldn’t really justify dropping the ~$300 on an upgrade, and by the time i had the money the Switch was a thing, so i bought one of those instead. second-hand copies of Xenoblade used to be on sale at my local game store aaaall the time, and i cannot count how many times i would stare longingly at that $38 price tag and have to talk myself out of buying it in hopes of ‘”one day”’ having the appropriate system to play it on.

AND THEN. THE DEFINITIVE EDITION WAS ANNOUNCED. the hunch that 16-year-old Cat had was 100% correct; i am so so glad that i listened to it because playing through the game for the first time blind was a really special experience :’)

i have spent, no lie, 6 whole fucking years in anticipation of one day getting to play this game, and it was worth every dang second of the wait.

On a normal day, Guo Jia can spend maybe twenty to thirty minutes styling and grooming his hair, and other days, like waking up with an awful hangover, he might forego any of that and just set out carefree into the world with some serious bed head going on. Which brings me to the next question, actually...

▸      DOES   YOUR   MUSE   CARE   ABOUT   THEIR   APPEARANCE   /   WHAT    OTHERS    THINK ? There is a certain standard Guo Jia likes to hold his appearance and looks to, but honestly? The guy doesn’t really give a damn about how others perceive his looks or style or anything related to it. Like, Guo Jia prefers to dress fashionably, prefers to look quote end quote “on fleek”, but if for some reason on a given day he doesn’t have time to dress properly or do his hair or anything like that, then he’s okay with that too. Everyone’s negative opinions on him can honestly be damned if you ask Guo Jia. I mean the guy would sometimes barge into meetings hungover and without any pants on and not give two single shits about the remarks or judgements people made. Case in point, Guo Jia likes to look good in the eyes of others, but equally, he doesn’t really give a damn if they don’t appreciate what he’s working with.

LMFAO there’s quite a bit to unpack here but, to try and sum some of them up, he’s very morally gray, he can be manipulative, he has a drinking problem, he’s hella flirty, he’s a real ‘ends justify the means’ kind of guy, with the way he lives he is either going to end up partying or working himself to death (or both somehow), and he can occasionally tease people too much (to the point of pissing them off).

Guo Jia generally hasn’t had many people grow close enough to him to where he would care about losing them. Guo Jia didn’t know his mother or any of his brothers and sisters, and his father was a complete asshat, so he has no true connection to any of his actual family, nor would he care if any of them perished. Guo Jia is in much the same boat when it comes to close friends  or found-family too-- he has maybe, two, or three people he would really feel bad about losing, but none of them have passed yet, so there’s nothing to be affected by, yet.

▸      WHAT    ARE    SOME    FOND    MEMORIES    YOUR    MUSE    HAS ? Finally being accepted by a father-figure type person (Hua Tuo) and the time he spent with them studying, training his magical arts, and indulging in their wine collection.

▸     IS    IT    EASY    FOR    YOUR    MUSE    TO    KILL ? It’s very, very, very easy for Guo Jia to kill people. Even in instances where Guo Jia would prefer not to kill someone, he’ll still do it without batting an eye if he thinks it’s the only way forward.

▸      WHAT’S    IT    LIKE    WHEN    YOUR    MUSE    BREAKS    DOWN ? Interesting, because Guo Jia doesn’t really break down. When Guo Jia reaches a breaking point (which is incredibly rare), there isn’t any anger, or tears, or outbursts, or anxiety or fear or anything like that-- when Guo Jia is ‘breaking down’, it’s more like he ‘shuts down’ as in he just smiles, maybe gets a sullen look in his eyes, and goes silent, becoming an immobile heap of flesh who’s completely disconnected from the outside world and many of their own emotions. It’s a really odd, and possibly eerie thing to witness when this happens to Guo Jia, because he basically appears to be in what can only be described as a ‘waking coma’-- his eyes will be open, he’ll be smiling, he’ll be ‘awake’ but he won’t really be ‘there’.

▸      IS    YOUR    MUSE    CAPABLE    OF    TRUSTING    SOMEONE    WITH    THEIR    LIFE ? If Guo Jia gets close enough with someone, yes, he can trust them with his life, but since that doesn’t often happen....

▸      WHAT’S    YOUR    MUSE    LIKE    WHEN    THEY’RE    IN    LOVE ? Guo Jia in love is not much different from Guo Jia regularly. Assuming of course that Guo Jia opens up and actually allows himself to indulge in loving and being loved by someone, he will be more romantic with said person, his flirting will go farther more often, and he will want to include them in a lot of his activities. Guo Jia on the whole though will just keep being himself ,and yes that involves being a flirt, not just with his partner but with other people outside the relationship-- he wont cheat mind you, he’ll be surprisingly loyal to a potential partner in that regard, but flirting with people is like second nature to the guy and he isn’t just going to stop on a dime, though it is something he will try to work on if his partner is uncomfortable about it.

sorry if you've answered this before, but can you shed some light on where the idea of jaime having a 'failed' redemption arc comes from? i've only read the books (through affc) since the show ended, and that idea really puzzles me. i don't see anything in the books to support it. was it popularized by an anti-jaime bnf or something? did it exist before the show aired? it seems like such an odd take.

This is what GRRM has to say about it. 

I kind of tried to ask “Do you think he’s changed?” to get him to talk about Jaime’s redemption arc, so he said something like he wanted to explore the concept of forgiveness and whether it’s ever possible to be forgiven for doing such horrible things, and that his goal was to ask the question, not give an answer. [x]

One of the things I wanted to explore with Jaime, and with so many of the characters, is the whole issue of redemption. When can we be redeemed? Is redemption even possible? I don’t have an answer. But when do we forgive people? […]  I want there to be a possibility of redemption for us, because we all do terrible things. We should be able to be forgiven. Because if there is no possibility of redemption, what’s the answer then? [x]

That’s it. “If there is no possibility of redemption, what’s the answer then?” Basically, “WHAT’S THE POINT IF WE CAN’T BE FORGIVEN.” That doesn’t sound like nihilism or a failed Jaime. His goal with Jaime is to explore redemption because “we should be able to be forgiven,” not “explore the limits of redemption” which is nonsense that comes from BNF’s and lmfao what the actual fuck? And if he intended that he… would… have…. SAID THAT? But sure go ahead and throw some of your own words in there. 

His goal is for the reader to make up their own mind about Jaime without giving a straight answer. It’s not about Jaime wanting redemption and failing at achieving it, nor is it about Jaime wanting redemption and being forgiven with one big great act at the end with everyone loving him The End. “Failed redemption” is giving an answer and not GRRM’s focus or intent. 

I spoke with a couple of “failed redemption” believers and, from what I understand, it literally just comes from the Jaime is valonqar theory, and therefore he has to reach a place of ultimate internal darkness in order to strangle his twin and that it can in no way be viewed as a redemptive act so he fails. This is pretty fucking stupid on many levels but I’ll save that rant for another time lol. 

There’s also this quote about GRRM’s intent with Jaime and how the handchop was a significant moment in his arc. 

“And Jaime, losing a hand, losing the very thing he defined himself on is crucial to where I think I want to go with the character. And he questions what do you make of yourself if you’ve lost that.” [x] 

How the fuck is that a “lol he never rediscovers his honor and never changes for the better even though he wants to” …..???? He’s straight up saying that the handchop was crucial to his arc. His entire identity was wrapped around that hand.

It can be argued that losing the hand was a death for Jaime

and the question “what do you make of yourself” is his rebirth. Literally what’s the fucking point of his handchop, and having Brienne inspire him to live, if it ends in him ending bitter and dark and “failed” as a person I mean…?? 

There definitely isn’t enough textual evidence to give those arrogant bnf’s their overinflated confidence with that interpretation, and there certainly isn’t enough from GRRM. “Failed redemption” came from people who are married to fanon and certain headcanons and are therefore trying to fit square pegs into round holes, while ignoring intent, disregarding Brienne’s impact and purpose entirely, taking quotes out of context, and straight up ignoring bits of canon. They either simply hate Jaime and want him to fail, or they think GRRM is a B&W, nihilistic writer.

Okay is it just me or did Jon’s speech sound so hecking odd?! Like not even the speech itself but the way he was talking? Was it just Kit with early onset laryngitis or does Jon just really hate giving public speeches? (If it’s the latter, can’t really fault you there, cause I’m right there with ya buddy.)

I think the way they did the burning of the pyre scene was nice, each character sending off the person they had a connection with i.e Sam and Edd, Jon and Lyanna, Arya and Beric

So looks like Dany has started a bit of a PR campaign with the legitimization of Gendry and I have to admit, she’s on the right track here. Making it a public spectacle, starting off with the whole you’re dad sucks and tried to kill me spiel before finishing with but I’m making you a lord because I’m the queen and I can. 

And I absolutely love that they have Sansa understanding exactly what just went on there because if anyone knows how to play the game it’s my baby girl

This Jaime/Brienne/Tyrion/Pod drinking game scene was real cute and funny up until that virgin quip then it was just cringe as hell. CRINGE I TELL YOU!

I thought it was interesting to see Dany’s reaction to the love Jon receives from the northmen and how later on she pretty much says she’s never not been adored by her people before and it’s a really tough pill for her to swallow. Whether you’re a Dany fan or not, it’s easy to see how very out of place she is in the North and in Winterfell. It’s not a strike against her, it’s just a basic fact that she doesn’t belong there while Jon very much does belong in the North and I think this scene did a terrific job of highlighting all of this.

And then we get this ominous shot of Varys side-eyeing Dany while she side-eyes Tyrion and Jaime as well as Jon enjoying the feast with his people until she seemingly can’t take it anymore and promptly leaves the feast. I almost feel bad for her. Almost.

Okay so I was actually enjoying this Sansa and Sandor scene until he fucking brought up what Ramsey did to her like that and now I really want  to reach into my fucking screen and strangle him.

The look on Sansa’s face when he says she’s changed is honestly heartbreaking. It’s like in that moment she fully realizes exactly how much she’s been forced to change and all the trauma she’s gone through and just how fucking cruel the world turned out to be and I just—I need a minute.

Ah, Gendry and Arya. First off—Damn, boy didn’t wasted any time did he? His eagerness was cute but it felt a bit cheesy to me. As for Arya’s response, I think it makes total sense for her to answer the way she did. She might love him or what have you but since season one she’s always wanted to be a lady warrior and not someone’s wife which is valid as fuck. She’s right, it isn’t her. It doesn’t mean they’ll never cross paths again or that they don’t love each other. Arya’s basically just the Westerosi version of a modern millennial woman.

Jaime and Brienne—You sound quite jealous!! I’m not a huge shipper of it but I think it’s cute and honestly it’s funny to see people who actually claimed they were strictly platonic (sorry wut?) eating their words but the whole thing was a little awkward. But maybe it was meant to be considering it was Brienne’s first time

Sansa says hey maybe we should let the soldiers rest a little before jumping right back into another war, Dany somehow hears betrayal in that, goes to KL anyways and loses majorly. When will people learn to listen to the Queen in the North?

Not really digging that look Jon gave Sansa. I guess you could interpret it as Jon knowing Dany doesn’t like Sansa and he wants to keep her from harm at Dany’s hand so he’s trying to get her to keep a lid on it around the lady with crazy eyes and dragons or something, I have no idea. With that being said, D&D can have season 7-8 Jon. I will only be keeping season 1-6 Jon. Thank you.

I absolutely love that it’s Arya telling Jon all the hard truths. We don’t trust your queen. She’s not one of us. 

We didn’t get to see the reactions of Sansa and Arya finding out about Jon’s parentage. Disappointed but not surprised. Although I liked that they showed the contrast between Sansa and Arya reassuring Jon of his Starkness and Dany rejecting him as the last of her Targaryen family because of his claim.

The old Sandor/Arya team is back together and you know what? I aint mad. I wish Arya would have told her siblings she was leaving again though but it makes sense why she didn’t. I headcanon her and Sansa had a really emotional goodbye scene wherein Arya leaves her with a dagger and gives her a quick lesson on how best to use it and Sansa makes Arya a beautiful Stark cloak so she can have a piece of home with her where ever she goes.

Here comes all the Sansa betrayed Jon and told Tyrion!! posts. If that’s what you’re going to claim then you best drag not only Jon for telling Sansa and Arya but Dany for asking Jon to keep a secret like that from his family in the first place.

5) augh god........im like lmfao shit who represents my Hater Club side. hmmm. oh no wait you know what. totally different but i love Prof Beatrice Hotchkiss in the trt nancy drew pc game. she’s holed up in her room writing all the time and just is weird when you try to talk to her all like no i won’t open the door, bring me food, do this Research, bring me my Ski Boots i guess......and then when you do meet her it’s all at like post-midnight in the lounge and she’s all like, encouraging you as a Night Owl and your investigative curiosity and all and i’m like oh word yeah being up in the dead of night is the shit. she’s just weird and passionate and this is another character i might not Act hardly at all like but who i vibe with lmfao. hotchkiss was the supportive adult in my life

so honestly i think the quote that best sums this up is thor’s quote about stopping trying to be what’s expected and just being who he is. i’m aware that characters are written and ultimately the writer controls what happens BUT i think that perfectly sums up the difference between character arcs & in character actions.

everyone is complaining about thor and steves arcs and it’s like..... arc wise yes thor shouldve been king & steve shouldve acclimated to the future. but arcs are ALSO written and most of the time characters are forced into situations and it’s a completed character arc bc it rhymes/it’s poetic/it completes a cycle. BUT that is not the same thing as a character doing something in character. steve WANTED to go back and live with peggy. thor WANTED to explore the universe away from duty. maybe they didnt complete specific arcs that everyone expected but... they’re being who they are. in contrast to that you have tony who WANTED to stay with his family but chose to sacrifice himself & this completed his character arc beautifully. but those two kinds of ends for characters are not at odds with each other and one is not automatically bad writing bc the other one exists.

that being SAID here’s some more general thoughts
