Vice & Virtue (Pt. 1)

The bustling coffee shop had the newest freshman class rushing between classes to order drinks. There, behind the counter, stood a barista with tired eyes as she tried to explain that they didn’t carry the newest Starbucks drink. Though the persistent freshman girl continued to complain about her order, pointing at the newest version of the pink drink on her phone.  

"Look, we don’t have any of that stuff; the closest I can give you is a smoothie.” Sheena said this to the patron as she rubbed the bridge of her nose. This was the fifth time she had gone through this ritual today. Her coworker laughed as the disgruntled guest made their exit, the chimes of the doorbell signifying one issue was resolved. 

“Oddie, I’m gonna quit; it's going to happen,"” the tired barista quipped, knowing that, despite what she had said, nothing would occur. As the clock tolled one, a small exodus of customers left for class, taking a breath of fresh air as the two walked outside. The tall young man took out a small vape and took a puff. The cloud of vapor mixed with the smell of coffee is sickeningly sweet.  

“Shea,” Oddie laughed as she coughed from the vapor, “you didn’t even take a hit.” He was as sickeningly sweet as the vapor in the air, and his laugh was just as addictive. They stood beside each other, leaning near the door. The back of his head is just inches away from the top of the frame, unlike herself. She shook her head, walking back into the cafe. The large sign behind the counter was unreasonably bright for her liking as she waltzed back into fixing her messy hair before she fixed her own drink. 'Vice and Virtue Cafe,' she thought to herself; the owner certainly had style. As she sat on the plush velvet couch, she sipped her tea. She paused to take in her surroundings; between the decadent jewel toned wallpaper and the plants in the window, it felt like an oasis. To break the moment of peace, her phone rang

“Ms. Yoder, it’s Mrs. Keiser,” the voice over the phone continued. “Now I don’t want to be a bother, but my boys, Argyle and Ryan, are going to pay you a visit today.” Sheena sighed, knowing she would have to leave early from work.

“Sounds good, Mrs. Kieser.” She mustered out, soon moving her way to Oddell, who found himself behind the counter. She sighed, forgetting that the inspection was today. 

"Shea, if you need to leave, go,” Oddie assured, as he knew by now of Sheena’s issue with her landlord and her boys. 

The many tales spun about Muriel Kieser, who had been an amazed businesswoman, now resigned to a landlord, as well as her boys. Argyle, who worked for the university in maintenance, was a practical tradesman, and Ryan was the future lawyer. The two were both quiet, though as Sheena spoke, Ryan had a less likeable personality. Sheena left the cafe in a frustrated huff as she made her way to the rinky-dink apartment. She fumbled with the keys until she heard a sound.

"Hey, guys,” she nervously spoke as she turned, seeing the two. Argyle nodded as he helped open the door, and Ryan swiftly moved past them. Argyle was quiet as he slowly began to inspect the living room, writing down certain things as he looked around. His younger brother overlooks and follows like a lost dog. The two slowly moved through the room, moving towards the kitchen as Sheena followed with a nervous look. She felt disheveled as she followed her mind, running through every scenario. The morning had already been a mess, and yet here she stood in the wreck of a kitchen that had yet to recover from the past weekend's function. She could hear her grandmother in her mind, scolding her for the unwashed dishes in the sink. Sheena watched as the polar opposite brothers moved through the room, mummering to each other. They looked so similar with their pale, freckled skin and fawny brown hair; if it weren’t for their height, Sheena would probably confuse the two.

“Sorry for the mess; I didn’t know you two would be here today.” Her quiet voice broke the silence. "So, Ryan, how’s school been?” Sheena continued. The young man, who obviously didn’t want to speak, sighed. 

“It’s school, y’know.” His voice is thick with a Boston accent, one he’s adopted through the years. He surveyed the room and then her before speaking again.

"Are you still working at the coffee shop?” His voice seemed softer and kinder than normal. Sheena nodded, trying to clean as she went. The small kitchen barely holds all three of them as Argyle goes to check the porch, the gray sky not helping him look more awake. Ryan walked through the rest of the home, Sheena following closely. Her pale blue eyes watched closely as he walked through the small apartment.

Nora and Ambrose give Ivy a tour

This is the start of the scene. Nora tried to get Ambrose to do this on his own, but both he and Ivy balked at that idea. Nora is confused--in her memories Ambrose and Ivy seemingly just fell together practically love at first sight (note: Nora's memory is flawed. Ambrose was nice to Ivy at the start, but the two did not fall in love for nearly a year and a half; Nora just perceived his niceness as attraction and a threat).

As a compromise, Ivy asked Nora to join them for the tour. Nora agreed, secretly hoping she could use it to push the two together. Remember: Nora's plan is that since Ambrose and Ivy are inevitable, she might as well get credit for their union. If she's the cause, Ambrose can't forget her.

Anyway.

They decided to do the tour after their morning lectures on Oddel. They would have the afternoon free. Nora had chosen to arrive a few minutes late in the hope it would give Ivy and Ambrose time to talk and even bond before her arrival. Instead, both were silent. Ivy stood by one of the windows, watching the quiet street, and Ambrose waited by the door. Ivy was in a dusky pink dress with a low, gathered waist that rounded her hips. The style was simple, but the sewing immaculate. So far Ivy had worn only pink at the Academy. Nora wondered if she owned a single dress in another color. Ambrose had not changed from the morning. Normally, when they went out, he would relax a bit. Instead, he looked tense. Gabriel was on one of the couches as well and sorting through some notes or papers. Nora knew they were only an excuse so he could see them all off. He had been teasing her since Ivy’s suggestion at lunch three days ago. He grinned at Nora when she arrived and nodded toward the other two as if she could have missed the awkward silence between them. “I apologize for being late,” Nora said. Ivy startled. Ambrose’s shoulders lowered slightly and he looked at her with a smile. “That’s a point off, Ela,” Ambrose said. “Don’t call me Ela,” Nora snapped back. Then, she asked, “Wait, points? Are we competing?” The question soured in her stomach and she refused to look at Ivy. “Indeed. Miss Hexel will be our judge. Whoever is the better tour guide wins and will be treated by the other to a dessert.” Nora’s eyes narrowed. “Wait, if you and I are competing, how can you be the one to remove a point? That doesn’t seem fair.” “I suppose you do have the right to appeal my decision.” He turned to Ivy. “Miss Hexel, what say you?” “Ivy, please,” Ivy said with a smile. “I say that this competition is a surprise to me, but it sounds like fun. However, I do think we cannot add or remove points before everyone is aware of the game. Why don’t we start after we leave through the door?” “A most fair decision,” Ambrose said. He opened the door and swept his free hand out as he bowed. “Ladies.” Ivy chuckled and left the Academy. Nora flicked Ambrose’s shoulder before she left. “Fool,” she chided him. He looked up at her through his lashes, his grin warm. “It is an affliction,” he said. Nora rolled her eyes and joined Ivy outside. “So,” Nora asked. “Where shall we begin?” “Ceding to me so early in the game?” Ambrose asked. “Do you even want to win?” “Fine,” Nora said. “This way.”
