Cannot believe at this late stage of my life I'm becoming a Gabriel fucker. Local mean jock doesn't want to be evil now, he wants to be loved. I'm slightly annoyed they didn't make Beelzebub more unhinged because the "plot" should have been at least half about them fucking up shit on an absolute rampage trying to find Gabriel, a thing everyone assumes they are doing to fry him with hellfire so they can kick off the war in a way that's advantageous to hell, BUT ACTUALLY!!! true love.
#I do love evil love!#but more than that it's like... the terrible emptiness of heaven and hell?#absolutely no one has been having a good time!#they're just middle management admin suckers doing a soulless job no one else understands#they don't even care about earth! six thousand years of#mommy promised that if you all sit down and shut up we can have another war when the humans are dead#as a form of enrichment for their underlings#and they're just going along with it because that's the grind#incidentally I enjoyed how childish the angels were this season my pet theory is that they and the demons also have free will but no one#noticed so they've all just been making themselves miserable enforcing corporate culture and plotting each other's downfall because it#didn't occur to them to do anything else#gabriel and beelzebub realizing there's more to life and they can simply say fuck it and make something good between them#implies other angels and demons can do the same! as does Muriel obviously#like they are torturing each other. in much the same ways that humans are torturing each other#sad for Aziraphale and Crowley they care about earth & humans#which is a real problem they have that Gabzebub do not#and also that Crowley is in denial about how much he wants to be good and Aziraphale is in denial about just so many things and also#committed to being an ass about it.#these are problems that Gabriel and Beelzebub do NOT have because they are goal oriented and keep their eyes on the prize#good omens spoilers

nightmares have rendered me unable to sleep once again so i've been dancing in my room to Elvis music pretending K is dancing w/ me for the past 45 minutes. I think it'd be his way of trying to make me feel better. he isn't very experienced with comforting others but he hears me gasp awake, hears me crying. he knows the drill by now. he immediately gets up. takes my hands and pulls me out of bed. asks me if i want to talk about it, and if i don't, he turns on some music and swirls us around. he mimics elvis' voice while singing to the songs, knowing it'll make me laugh. when i finally do, he's smiling, saying very gently "there you are, sweetheart... there's my girl"

modern au jack and davey have opposite directions of character development in college and its so good for both of them. jack goes from being the edgy depressed loner kid who struggles to stay awake in class and doesn't care about anything to being the embodiment of saw a snail today effervescent completely unironically because suddenly he has space to breathe and room to make mistakes that don't feel like the end of the world and he's able to surround himself with people that genuinely like him and don't seem like they're just tolerating him. he goes from sitting in the back of every classroom and only responding when he can't avoid it to being excited to learn new things and excited to talk about the things he's learned and delighted to find people who care about the same things that he does.
and davey suddenly has the freedom to say no I don't want to do that. i don't want to be the smartest in the room who gives out his notes and does work for other people because it's what's expected of me. he can sit in the back of the class and zone out during a gen ed that doesn't interest him, he can skip class when it's a beautiful day and somebody texts him asking if he wants to go to the park instead of math 101. it doesn't turn him into a slacker but it does make him somebody who is aware of when he's burning out and unlike in high school when he pushed through it take four ap tests that he didn't even care about he says no actually today I am sleeping in and eating soup and not checking my email because if I don't do those things I will scream very loudly and perhaps bite somebody and I don't want to do that. and suddenly he has friends who know his personality beyond just "smart good nice kid" and who laugh when he's sarcastic or encourage him when he complains about how much homework he has or the annoying kid in his class who never does any work but expects their project partners to carry them to an A. he has friends who don't only see him as his academic life and instead make the effort to understand who he is as a person.

not about harry potter, but do you watch good omens?
and if so, thoughts???
i have perhaps an. unhealthy level of emotional investment in good omens
(psst there are ~4 days left of the official graphic novel kickstarter if anyone hasn't pledged who wants to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dunmanifestin/good-omens/description, it just hit its last stretch goal, THERE IS AZ FELL AND CO BOOKSTORE MERCH AS ADD ONS)
what are my thoughts? let's see. the ending of season 2 makes perfect sense as the second part of a trilogy but it still hurt me deeply and if aziraphale doesn't do the apology dance in season 3 i'll lose my mind. also if he does do the apology dance in season 3 i'll lose my mind. basically if there is season 3 and aziraphale is in it--
loved the conversation between nina and maggie and crowley at the end of s2, i watched it for the first time with a massive jane austen fan who was THRILLED the second he heard even a *reference* to her in the show (so naturally the ball was the absolute High Point of the season)
at the end of s1 it's basically explicitly stated that The Big One is heaven and hell vs. humanity so i'm intrigued to see what's going to happen in s3 to that end
i don't think the metatron actually wanted crowley to be reinstated to heaven, he just wanted to drive crowley and aziraphale apart and figured that offer would do it (and that it would sell aziraphale on the idea of changing heaven from the inside as Something He Could Actually Do) - i also am intrigued by how god's going to factor into all of it bc as we see with job god's totally down to fuck around with everyone (likewhatmaggieandninaweresaying) but in s1 god was basically just functioning as narrator and had that one conversation with aziraphale - so if god's going to become more active that would be fascinating, but i am also very interested in how exactly the metatron fits into all of this and the degree of control/influence there
i like the idea that muriel was memory wiped like they were going to do to gabriel (~institutional problems~) but i'm not sure how supported it is by the narrative - i don't know anything about muriel the angel like. biblically, or even if that's a biblical angel, so maybe if i knew more i'd have a more confident opinion afjslgkhjskdf
jon hamm in season 1 made me want to punch him in the face every time he showed up on screen and in season 2 i was delighted by basically everything he did. what a guy
i also desperately want to know if anathema heard about any of the events of s2 and if so what she thought of All Of That, so if anyone has like. fic recs for something of that nature let me know afjlskhgljskdf
and finally: crowley

do you think aziraphale and crowley understand death in a way none of us can because they have seen so much of it? because they were there for its conception? witnessed the first death the first funeral the first cry of grief? have witnessed every death and every funeral and every broken heart and forgotten grave and all of humanity’s sorrow?
or do you think that for that very reason, that because of all the death they have borne witness to while they themselves are immortal, they struggle to comprehend it at all?

i think ive finally decided on an angel josh design i like LETS FUCKIN GOOO
#i dont think his form. changes with his deaths#but it does creep more and more into his normal appearance with each one#i guess i should explain that angels in fmr are very different from our concept of angels#there's no heaven and hell in fmr#only the afterlife which is where souls lay to rest. souls make up part of the magic of the world#when josh awakens in the afterlife he's awake. his soul refuses to go dormant#and upon seeing the strength of his soul he's transformed into an angel and sent back to the physical world#of course hes not doing good with this. he sprouted six wings and hundreds of eyes in the literal void and now his life is in danger#each god has an associated spirit#they're all guardians of something.#terra godbounds are guardians of the earth. vita godbounds are the guardians of life. mortem godbounds are the guardians of the spiritual#josh is the latter and as such he can see. the ghosts and stuff. who all cling to him#idk if im gonna keep the word godbound but yeah. basically they're people that are chosen by the gods for some reason#and are transformed into guardians. they're not very common of course#and a lot of time they're used for. magical/religious purposes#but its seen as the most sacred form of connection to magic#and as such breaking those ties (like josh does in the good ending)#is seen as the greatest crime you could ever commit and it breaks your ties with magic#josh loses his magic after falling and is basically. not really able to go home#i dont talk about the worldbuilding enough i really should#PLEASE ask about this if you wanna know stuff 🙏 like anything#fmr tag

Hmm.
#hmm#hmmmm#just had a conversation that i have not fully processed yet#which i am currently not feeling any emotions about which canNOT be right#there have gotta be emotions there but i WOULD believe that they are very very very very firmly suppressed#i do think my brain is kind of doing a meta world tilt shift thing right now that may not be perceptible to the mind's eye#kind of like how if the earth itself started slowing down in its rotation it might be hard to tell what the fuck was happening#you see. in the year of our lord 2016 i went through the worst shittiest most devastating breakup of my life#which left me in what we'll just call a Poor Mental State through much of 2017#and which i only finally clawed out of when i realized i had to stop exposing myself to contact with the ex by unfriending/blocking#which. very healthy choice. should've done that much sooner and i recommend it to anyone in a similar situation#anyway#the crisis dragged on for longer than it should have because ex and i were still trying to be friends when we really really should've. not#we kept driving each other crazy and i was still in love with the guy even though. HAHAHAHAHAHA SHITTY BREAKUP.#so basically my brain was in a constant state of 'i need him to care about me' butting up against 'i am terrified that he doesn't' and#of course that second one became self-fulfilling because i was annoying the shit out of him#crisis finally hit an inflection point when i got it through my head that i just had to accept that i might never be friends with him#that i was gonna have to stop talking to him and let it go#and for the rest of my life assume friendship was not a viable option#and that is how i lived for six years#and he moved to Colorado and got married#and i tried to date some people and hooked up with some others#and that brings us to today#when someone walked up to me at a wedding and said 'oh are you drake? i'm M's friend! didn't you two like date or something?'#🙃#okay TO BE CONTINUED bc apparently there's a tag limit did you know that? I've never hit 30 tags before. ok one sec

[talk of real-life and in-narrative anti-foster/adopted child sentiments, violent ableism, and child abuse/neglect/homicide cw, as well as mentions of racism.]
i think probably the biggest reason ivan's narrative makes me so goddamn angry is that not only was it hateful toward foster/adopted kids and disabled ND kids; it tries to take the intersection of those two, which gets children neglected, violently abused, and Straight Up Fucking Murdered at sky-high rates even compared to NT foster/adopted kids, and spin it as privilege. a novelty adoption by an explicitly abusive parent, no less.
and to make it even worse, they repeatedly and explicitly try to use his body type to go 'well i mean technically he's a kid but he LOOKS like an adult because he's Big and Threatening, so we're just gonna ignore that and judge him by adult standards.' which, for one thing, hi that is an extremely racist idea to perpetuate, even when you try to trojan horse it by applying it to white kid characters. fuck outta here with that. but it's also vile because 'big scary brutish violent neurodivergent boy who can't be meaningfully controlled through anything but more violence' is--surprise!--a piece of rhetoric that results in violence toward neurodivergent kids, autistic ones in particular. guess the fuck what ivan is coded as. 🙃
like. i cannot overstate that kids like ivan are at enormously high risk for severe abuse and outright murder. they do not get privilege handed to them on a silver platter, and they certainly don't get to lord it over the '''real''' children in the family. and it's fucking sinister that the authors try to make you sympathize and side with the '''real''' child in this scenario, who is constantly spouting off exactly the ideas that get foster/adopted kids killed, by making him the Good Nice One and ivan the Evil Mean One, and contriving a situation where there's on any level a power imbalance in ivan's favor.
fuck these books, man. how are these writers' arms even long enough to punch down that far.

Okay, so I've read the Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse artbook, and there is this fantastic passage on Earth-42 that gives context to the dimension, Miles G., Uncle Aaron and the Sinister Six.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Miles comes face to face with a parallel world version of his own in Earth-42 – an alternate reality where he never gained superpowers and where his Uncle Aaron is still alive. “We wanted to craft this moment where Miles encounters this powerful figure in his life that he loved so much and he lost," says director Justin K. Thompson. “That's when he realizes that he is not really in his own dimension, as well as the gravity of what he has lost. In this reality, Aaron has had to shake off his life of crime and became a surrogate father figure to Miles.”
The artists changed Uncle Aaron's outward appearance to reflect this new reality and convey how he has changed. The Uncle Aaron of Earth-42 has a little gray in his beard. His clothing still has the old “cool streetwear” vibe, but he has a more sophisticated and older look. In this alternate reality, the Sinister Six have been able to flourish and take over the world. “We wanted to create a world where it felt like Aaron and Miles G. Morales [this reality counterpart to Miles Morales] are the only heroes.”
It's a much darker version of Miles' original home. So, we looked at comic book artists who epitomized that sort of noirish world - artists like Frank Miller, Sean Gordon Murphy, John Polygon, where there is heavy use of black and colors sort of recede behind the dark shadows. The powerless version of Miles is still capable and efficient and has great acrobatic and physical prowess. We also needed Miles to feel trapped in this dark world. We wanted to leave the audience with the burning question: ‘How is he going to get home?’ It was just exciting to see the development of this world to underscore all of these narrative choices we were making.”
