#oh COME ON WKX

My version of the wardrobe template! yay!! I had a LOT of fun doing this and feel like I could elaborate a bit more on each of those.

It's already linked up here, but here's once again a > link to the post.< Anyway! More about these designs below!

So first, for WKX's template! - Chapter 2: Grey robes I had already made my design of those for the full TYK lineup I made a while back. I really, really like those, and took inspiration from some of the robes SHL!WKX wears in the show for the shapes. - Chapter 69: dark robes with dark red belt I expected to like that style for him, but not that much! I had seen a tutorial on how asymetrical hanfus were worn by archers in the past and that inspired me, purely on a fashion level of course. I like how intimidating he looks with those and enjoy the touches of blue in the inner layer of the robes. - Chapter 75: dark red robes The GVM robes! which I also designed a while back when researching for the illustrations of the Mt Fengya battle scenes that I wanted to make. I reworked them just a little bit and got rid of some details that I didn't like anymore. I tremendously pleated skirts for WKX so I went at it once again. I also used shifts in hues to make it look like it could have been drenched in blood. - Extra 5: deep red robes For the reminder (since apparently some people are not aware of extra 5's existance), this extra is set 5 years post-canon. I wanted WKX to wear something that looked comfortable for traveling but also practical and fashionable. The teal jacket is of course another nod at SHL since the red and teal combo was an absolute banger. Let's say I didn't want WKX to just sport an all-red look. Furthermore, the teal really works to adorn the red hues. - My personal favourite I actually don't really know whether those are my actual personal favourites, but I've come to LOVE WKX dressed in red and white thanks to @kwehxing's designs. I think it really suits him and on top of that it avoids the question "is this Hua Cheng" LMAO--okay jokes aside, I combined most of the shapes that I really like for WKX (wider shoulders, wide sleeves, and long robes with pleated inner robes) and I find him very elegant like this. Now, for ZZS! - Chapter 1: sapphire blue scholar robes Those had already been designed before as well! They're my go to generic TC!ZZS robes, haha. I was a bit extra with the blue colour here, but oh well. I'm quite obsessed with the silver brocade cynching his waist, haha. - Chapter 2: stolen farmer robes A classic as well as far as I'm concerned--of course, inspired by his hobo fit in SHL because it was quite efficient. I'm forever fond of my scruffy hobo!Xu and his toes poking from his sandals. - Chapter 18: luxurious robes from the Gao family Those were a new design! Which I had a lot of fun coming up with. Putting ZZS in a different colour scheme was also really nice. For those who don't remember, ZZS feels quite ridiculous when he sees himself in a mirror wearing those fancy robes while being so emaciated and still sporting his hobo mask. I wanted to give this "out of place" feeling; and also work on a very "wuxia" style for the robes, since this is jianghu and they were provided by Gao Chong. - Extra 5: black robes I'm incredibly fond of this design. I worked quite a bit on it, since I wasn't sure of where I wanted to go. My main guidelines were: practical and cool. I really like ZZS having a lot of room to move so ideally not too much fabric in the way, and I think he also needs arm braces to be rid of annoying sleeves. Of course, him looking much healthier and having a dynamic ponytail really works to "complete the look", and I find that he looks really cool there haha. - My personal favourite This one has been refined over the months, but it's definitely, overall, my favourite look for him in terms of shapes and construction. I like that the robes are short, I like the more fashionable jacket. I'm especially into the "pants tucked into the boots" silhouette, as well as the little ribbons keeping them tight around the ankles. I'd say that this leg shape + short robes + a bun (or sometimes a ponytail) is THE ZZS design combo for me, haha. It looks practical and fun and adventurous, just how I like it.

To conclude the whole post, I had more fun doing this than I even expected, and needless to say that I'm very excited to see other versions of them following this template. It was a good opportunity to try and project what the characters look like throughout the book, and a fun design exercise as well. I actually don't really like doing character design usually, but for characters I'm obsessed with, it's of course a much nicer experience. Anyway, thank you for reading!

modern au fem!hanwenzhou

okay so like, pretty much all my art is someone else's fault. i stand by this. this is the fault of @antique-forvalaka (henceforth siv). blame or thank her. she just showed up unprovoked and was like, "fem!wkx has a flat ass and fem!zzs is big tiddy tomboy," and i was like, "umm???" what was i meant to do? NOT draw them? it's a modern au because i don't fuck with drawing hanfu.

most of these were drawn when i was too sick to write and lemme tell you i 100% underestimated the effect of a cough on drawing art. the lineart on wkx's piece took me so fucking long. i even had to go back in and redo bits of it. that's why some of it looks wonky but shhhh don't look.

this was the first one i started drawing, and then i nearly gave up because zzh's face is the fucking worst to draw. like, i even tried tracing a still and it still didn't look like him. okay, thots:

f!zzs has long hair that she takes relatively good care of but she pretty much always just ties up and ignores

she keeps it long because she sometimes does infiltration missions and it's helpful to appear super feminine

she knows how to be pretty and well presented but she literally never gives a shit

left alone she will happily sit in a sports bra and panties and eat ramen

oh yeah when she's lying low after leaving tc she disguises herself as a male vagabond. @luckydragon10 is very attached to f!zzs's fake stubble.

the hoodie look is an adaptation of my favourite zzs look from woh which is the meili look. look i am a simple woman, put the characters in a veiled hat and my brain just goes hrrrrnnnnng.

oh hello other actor in this drama who is incredibly fucking hard to draw. luckily i had already drawn modern wkx before so i was a bit more used to his face. okay, some more thots:

the first one i drew was the big profile which is labelled in the csp file as tiddies out wkx

in my head f!wkx has a flat ass and flat chest bc siv said so, but she wishes she were curvy like wkx

she's very much styled after a femme fatale, emphasis on the fatal

she's pretty much always immaculately turned out, perfect make-up, perfect clothes, all very expensive

i had to draw her in stockings and garter belt. i just had to. also that lace texture killed me and took me like half of wanda//vision (which i was watching in the background) to get right

part of the reason i even did modern au was because i wanted to draw wkx with a sniper rifle

on that note the sniper rifle is traced from a photo bc i am lazy and at that point was very ill

"oh? so you have chosen death~♡" -- that's her vibe

fave wkx is angery wkx up in the top right corner. i drew her last.

one big regret that i didn't draw her splattered in blood and smirking like lelouch from code geass. i just think that would be neat.

this was the last set of these that i drew and i had to think long and hard about what to do for her. i knew i wanted her to be shorter than zzs but curvier than wkx but that was literally it

originally when i started drawing f!hy i gave her short curly hair, like close to a pixie cut, but i couldn't make it look right, so i went back to siv and extracted her suggestion of a side cut or undercut

in my head, hy and zzs run two-man missions all the time, with zzs as front woman and hy as tactical support/getaway driver

siv said to me that she sees wkx playing dress-up with hy bc hy is more receptive to it than zzs and i was like oh yes so that's why there's a little classy hy over on the right

also the more i drew f!hy with her little undercut and sweats i realised she looked like a fuckboi and i was here for it

special shout out to my favourite tac gear item: the throat mic. they're just so sexy. don't come at me.

shout out to fancy dress ass-kicking hy. the backstory here is that wkx put her in a pretty dress for a nice evening out only for it to devolve into a battlefield so hy takes off her heels and just starts blasting.

oh yeah special shout out here bc my brain was just like "play with the colours" so i did and now there is no consistent colouring for this set.

anyway i love hy's little button nose. so cute. love drawing it.

standard disclaimers for my art: all of it was drawn in clip studio paint (my beloved). i use pose references using the built-in 3D models and assorted poses i've downloaded from the store. faces are drawn using stills from the show i've founded on google images. when i draw fashion there's a high change it's from runway collections, in this case hy's dress is from the paolo sebastian moonlight serenade collection, specifically this one. and the fancy han ying look is adapted from ashi studio fall/winter 2017, specifically this look.

doing this loosely and with director's commentary bc i can never resist

january: my top set is this winteam hugs one. man i struggled so much with maintaining quality while trying to do that yellow to blue gradient coloring down the set. i definitely remembered it as looking worse than it does though, so i was pleasantly surprised to see that no it looks pretty good actually. probably also my favorite from that month since the others are very basic but honorable mention to my chinzhilla set cause i gotta shout out my beloved namesakes

february: top is jimbo the gogurt cat 😻 february was a slow month for me gif-wise so there aren't that many to choose favorites from, but it's probably my eclipse rewatch ep4 for the coloring

march: well uhh march was even slower than february i have two whole posts from that month and they're both eclipse rewatch sets (this was when my old laptop died and i spent like 3-4 weeks without photoshop). top and fav for this month is the eclipse rewatch ep5

april: top is akkayan in the first our skyy 2 trailer and fav is .... akkayan in the second our skyy 2 trailer (the quality of these is so much better how did i manage to make those first gifs look so bad 😅). honorable mention to my coloring in the eclipse rewatch ep8

may: ahh the our skyy 2 days...take me back..... top is every akkayan kiss as it should be. which i think is also my top post on this blog. as it should be. fav is vegas x it's about time (tw for glitch effect/flashing). there's some stuff there that i would go back and change cause i don't think it comes across great in retrospect, but i'm still really pleased with all the technical details

june: top was minoru's heart eyes part 3 (a gif series i WILL come back to shortly - i think the bleak midwinter is the perfect time for an odt rewatch). fav is akk x identity, but god would i go back and redo the typography and layout of the lines/text boxes (iirc i was like. minutes away from missing the deadline on this event so). still very pleased with the blending and what the set actually conveys though

july: oh look another gif series i've put on hold.... top is word of honor rewatch ep1, fav is tied between kp pretty boys (a set which is very pretty itself, if i do say so myself, and was very fun to make) and lomfontien kiss details (truly one of my all time favs on this blog even though it's so simple also everyone please go watch la pluie right now thank you)

august: bombastic side eye: the series takes the cake this month, which was SUCH a fun set to make (as was its spiritual companion, objectifying him to filth, which trailed by only about 30 notes). fav was charn vs wkx quotes. i honestly think i nailed it both conceptually and aesthetically

september: top is the first kanaphan drinking straw cinematic universe which continues to delight me whenever it shows back up in my notifs. fav is tied between cursed sandray parallels (tw glitch) (because it was one of those where as i was making it and inflicting emotional damage on myself, i knew it was going to be delightful inflicting that damage on others, and it was) and sandray x it will come back (mostly for the neon text and its reflection in the first two i just think it looks really good)

october: top was sandray love scene details (tw flashing) which was basically a rip off of my lomfontien kiss one from july but this one was much more successful lol. favorite is only friends x shameful company (tw flashing) (which now i can't look at without thinking of the sign skdjfds). really happy with the cards gif in particular

november: the guynawa kiss won november and they deserved it. my favorite was jim x loss which took me foreverrrr and i redid the last two gifs like three times but it was worth it. also shoutout to my dan x shadow post for all the 'wait there's actual monsterfucking in this show' reactions it elicited

december: top is phayatharn ep1/ep2 parallels and i have to take back what i said about every akkayan kiss being my top post - this one beats it by three notes! which surprised me but i'm glad we're all in this madness together with these two. fav has got to be morkday x come closer (tw flashing) if only for how much i beat my head against a wall over it during the creation process skdjfskj. although i also really love this set of tharn's sexy dream (nsfw) specifically because i added an offset pink layer and i'm OBSESSED with the way it looks with phaya's tattoo

if you read all that.. thank you and also i'm in love with you. anyways it was super fun to look back on everything i made this year! and interesting to realize i'm not nearly as prolific as i thought, especially in the first half of the year. here's to many more gifsets in 2024!!

I think Liu Qingge fits the mould of character you like but Tianlang-jun (I haven’t watch much of WoH but he and WKX are a little similar) and his snake nephew are the best MXTX villains imo (they’re well written, funny as fuck and not actually even villains)

I think I want to read the books eventually, I already have them purchased, and while I don't care much for the main couple, I don't mind them either. Wen Kexing teasing Zhou Zishu by calling him “Zhou pusa” (Zhou Bodhisattva) is funny and I will absolutely write more of him doing so. But listen: the worshipping potential for hanzhou, considering how Han Ying basically compares ZZS to a deity in episode 10: Perhaps someone comes to post-canon au Siji shanzhuang to beg aid and ZZS gives it to them after much eye-rolling and demanding (much in the spirit of YBY actually, and narratively on purpose were I to write this in some kind of fic format) why he should help someone whose misfortunates are their own creation. And WKX teases him about it, but HY just says with a smile - “As expected of our Zhou-pusa.”

And ZZS honeset-to-god blushes. He’s flustered. HY’s devotion and near saintly worship was awkward before when HY was so earnest about it. But now he jokes about it? Treats it like an endearment?

helloo!!!!!!!! itse me from ao3 (oh that rhymes!) im a chatterbox as well, i love long comment/reblog chains and generally talking about stuff im passionate for a normal amount, and after reading your reply i had a question that i thought, why not drop into your inbox and ask you (if you want) to share a bit of your process behind writing The Only Place You Wanna Be!!!! my initial question is actually that im wondering whether at any point you were uncomfortable, like, exhaustingly uncomfortable when tackling gx/wkx/zzs as a rarepair. because when i write and im trying to break some mental barriers of my own i oftentimes need to take very long breaks frequently to rest. uve written rare ships before but mentioned in your reply that it stretched u to write this fic, despite becoming passionate along the way. what about the fic challenged you, what is it that was difficult to explore? and what had u be very enthusiastic about? also, when i was reading the fic i kept wondering how u were gonna handle gx/cwn, in what manner u where going to address it (if at all), and i really liked what u settled on, but did u have different ideas for it? do u have ideas for how it might look like when cwn returns home alone? (if u would like to share) im wondering if gx is now firmly in the wenzhou camp or if she might be going to experience her romance with cwn later too? i think that could work really well, because he is her peer and has different views and thoughts about the world and society at large than wenzhou, which i think is still smth gx would/could be drawn to. like, wenzhou are very jaded, they have to relearn how to love and trust etc, and gx in a way has to as well. in canon her cute romance with cwn is a way for her to experience mundane young adulthood. do u think thats smth that could still happen, that would still attract her, and that would fit into the new dynamic of the AU uve written?

hello hello!! i also love talking about things a normal amount so you've come to the right place and i'm so glad you asked. [chin in hands] i would be completely delighted to talk about the only place you wanna be, because it's truly one of my favourite stories i've written thus far.

first--was i exhaustingly uncomfortable at any point writing this fic? i honestly wasn't! it wasn't an 'easy' ship to write, i.e. one i'm very comfortable in the dynamics of and don't have to think overly hard about. but i was not particularly uncomfortable, either (i do know what you mean, though--i've had ships before that have made me uncomfortable and i've had to really sit down and rest between wrestling through my thoughts on it)

hands down the biggest thing i struggled with was the question "what the heck does zhou zishu find so compelling about gu xiang?" not because she's not absolutely charming, but because zhou zishu is not easily charmed.

the wen kexing facet was easy--the way he and gu xiang grew up together and saved each other from the horrors of gui gu puts them in such a state of enmeshment, their bond so full of complex emotional tangles and twists that all i really have to do is tweak the strands and bam! ship.

but zhou zishu and gu xiang? i had to really sit with that facet, turn it over in my mind like a rotisserie chicken, because anytime i've put them in proximity before it's just been this volatile-yet-fond bickering that doesn't really go further, or get them closer. zhou zishu is prickly, and aloof, and only diverted from his self-destructive bent by one wen kexing. and in this au, he already quite contentedly has said wen kexing. what does he need some charming girl for? what has he ever needed a charming girl for?

i thought gu xiang could easily find a whole host of things in zhou zishu to like and admire, many of them not dissimilar to what wen kexing sees in him. but how the heck would they come together? how would it go beyond gu xiang's crush on this super impressive, stupidly beautiful guy?

i took a hard look at my other most favourite ships with zhou zishu (han ying, xie'er, jing beiyuan, ye baiyi, liu qianqiao) and sorted through what things i thought he might care about in a person, outside of "is too stubborn to let him push them away" at least. i realised i really had to face my gu xiang and interrogate her more serious side, ultimately, as much for the sake of figuring out the ship vibe i wanted as for writing her as a compelling pov character. because for a character like gu xiang, a good portion of her seriousness happens outside of her conscious awareness of it. it's all background noise against which the bright flares of her imperiousness shines very distractingly.

but really, she learned from the best; her silliness and her brashness and the whip of her tongue are just another version of wen kexing's smooth flirtations and gently waving fan. she's clumsy and charming while he's elegant and disarming, but aside from him being a thousand times more intentional about it, they're not altogether that different of masks. after all, gu xiang was taught to kill first and ask questions later, no matter who may or may not be innocent. she grew up with the firmly-seated knowledge that she was not human. and even when she was a literal baby, she smiled when she was hurt because to do anything less was to risk being abandoned.

and, most damningly, gu xiang cares. she cares deeply, and thoroughly, and she gets attached even when she shouldn't, even when she knows better. she takes to humanity so beautifully.

and i realised that if i put someone like that into zhou zishu's life, into zhou zishu's once-abandoned home, and let her breathe life into the place, i could make my problem *his* problem and that suited me much better.

it's really two sides of the same coin, what i wrestled with the most to get into shape and what i was enthusiastic about. like with most rare ship challenges, i find it compelling simply to do said wrestling. i enjoy sitting down and hammering out the details of character dynamics--what they find compelling about one another, what draws their eye, how they fall in together, what makes them stay. or not, as the case may be sometimes.

i was excited to dig into the challenge of this ship and this fic, because i knew once i started getting the pieces hewn into shape it would be very satisfying. i was excited to tackle a siji arc au that was a new flavour, and write something really properly from gu xiang's pov that explored her arc of stepping onto the path to the human world through a new angle and from the inside.

i was particularly excited to dig my fingers into her relationship with wen kexing--not even really from the ship perspective (i mean, you've read this story, it's almost not about the shippiness of the ship at all until the very end) but just them.

i have a lot of ideas for someday-fics where gu xiang is more present in the plot and i get to explore her and wen kexing's relationship, in any capacity, more intensely. i have so so so many feelings about the two of them, no matter which hats you want to put on their dynamic. and this fic was really my first larger-scale opportunity to do some of that examining and reveling.

they were just two kids in a world of ghosts, clinging to one another until they could get out. a teenaged boy half-raising a little girl, full of rage and spite and the confidence and inexperience of youth and the wholesale abandonment of humanity, teaching her how to eschew it from an even younger age than himself, teaching her how to be a killer to keep her safe--and then playing games with her behind closed doors, making snowmen for her when she cried, letting himself be silly and warm in spite of everything. they're a master and the maidservant that attends his whims. they're a gui gu guzhu and his right hand that stands ready at attention to keep every secret and enact his plans on the jianghu.

they're so many things--each other's first priority, most trusted person, with the kind of knowing that only comes from years and years. the loyalty. the love. the way wen kexing's plan always made room for getting gu xiang out into the world to live a human life as its ultimate goal, the way he couldn't help but continue to lean on her assistance and keep her close and project his own fears even as he kept trying to push her away into that human life he wanted for her. the way he needs her, the way he tries to push her away anyway and rescue her from the fire that he plans to let consume him. the way he's so proud of her and so terrified of how similar she is to him at the same time. the way she's grown up into a better woman than he could have hoped, not in spite of him but because of him, and the strength she shows in being able to embrace even the parts of them both that built them into who they are, in a way wen kexing has never been able to.

it drives me absolutely banana pancakes sometimes until all i can do is wail and point at them emphatically.

anyway, a fic in which i got to explore gu xiang choosing to stay at her zhuren's side over choosing to follow his orders--letting her desires override her duty, letting one kind of loyalty and one aspect of their dynamic rule over another--in which wen kexing has to gradually come to terms with his plans for her being utterly and completely foiled, come to terms with the fact that she isn't rejecting the human path but instead is absolutely going to keep walking it while dragging him down along it with her, that all his hopes and dreams for her are coming true except with him in the picture. ugh. i'm legitimately going to cry just talking about it lmfao. which is another very good reason this fic happened from gu xiang's pov.

i'm going to put a header here because this has gotten unconscionably long and you also asked about cao weining. so. here we go.

regarding cao weining

i would like to start off by saying he is my precious bean and i love him. but as much as i like cao weining and gu xiang together in canon, they are not otp material for me. i find it quite easy to break them up, largely because they are young and their bond at first is pretty devoid of genuine understanding or deep connection.

cao weining's persistence, a soft mirror to wen kexing's, and his graceful handling of a traumatised ghost, a soft mirror to zhou zishu's, both pay off in the long run. but it's not too hard for me to conceive a world where they didn't.

in this particular au, i think cao weining will always have done much to teach gu xiang about being human, and about what she wants in that regard. and cao weining will always probably be a little bit in love with her, because he strikes me as the kind of person who's a little bit in love with all his friends, and still holds a little bit of a candle for every person he's ever fallen for before since his very first crush.

but one of the things i like most about writing, particularly au's, is the nature of choice, and how the choices we make define us. it's not just that you can become someone different, it's that you are always, constantly becoming someone different. and at every stage of yourself, you look back and the road you took may seem perfectly logical, may seem like of course that's who you were going to become, because you only see the road you've taken to get there. but if you took a different path, if you made a different choice, and then each choice based off that choice, and looked back, wouldn't you feel the same way about that road? that's the way i like to write my au's.

so in this case, gu xiang didn't make that first crucial choice to be with cao weining instead of wen kexing. she didn't dutifully listen to orders, and let him say goodbye. she didn't let that distance from her zhuren, that closeness with cao weining, define her, and she didn't make subsequent choices based off that one, leading her down the road of canon. she didn't keep choosing cao weining--didn't choose to not only be with him but to be like him, to go back for shen shen to save gao xiaolian, to openly confess her desire to be human with him and be the kind of human that she thinks could stand at his side as his partner. still feeling that love, that loyalty, for wen kexing, but allowing love and loyalty to cao weining to grow up alongside it as the months go by.

instead, she chose wen kexing. she chose to follow him and stay close to him, even going against his wishes, against his orders. she chose to get involved in his new life with zhou zishu and zhang chengling, in all their daily intricacies instead. to make zhou zishu living or not into her problem, too. to make their home her home, and then defend it.

i'm being so long-winded about this, my apologies, i just love tracing all these little paths out, because i do so much of this thinking when i'm writing and it never gets said anywhere XD this isn't even really what you asked. but i guess, the conclusion of it is, to this end, no, i didn't really think of any other way their relationship could go at this point than to split here.

cao weining's loyalty to his sect being compromised in favour of staying with gu xiang *at* siji shanzhuang is an interesting concept, but it feels considerably less flexible of a choice than gu xiang's, and ultimately, this fic wasn't about him, so i was content to let him choose his sect first here. he does so reluctantly, but since he has that loyalty to his sect, he can only understand gu xiang's loyalty in turn, and part with that understanding, a little bittersweet but with his optimistic hope to reunite someday in better conditions when all this is over.

and i do fully think that they will reunite. but in that time, they'll have each done an awful lot of growing and changing. you really hit the nail on the head there, that gu xiang's romance with cao weining is a way for her to experience a mundane young adulthood, and take that path to growth together with him.

in a lot of ways, i think she's essentially forfeited the possibility of doing that in this au. it strikes me a bit like an imperial court drama--she had the choice to run away with her young lad, to be a new bride with a new groom, young lovers regarded as such by the narrative and the people around them, given space to indulge in this youth and build their own concept of a household together and grow up into the world at their own pace. and her other choice was to be inducted into a noble lord's household as his second wife, to enter into a space that already has define edges and considerable growth under its belt, and to grow up a bit faster into the responsibilities of her station, with the trade-off of, perhaps, a bit more security.

and sometimes--most of the time--the story is indeed about the young woman running away into freedom and romance. and this story is the alternate path.

by the time gu xiang meets cao weining again, she will practically be the lady of siji shanzhuang--something more than a housekeeper and less than a wife. i don't think she'll have had to grow up too fast for comfort, i mean, have you seen zhou zishu's sheer capacity for mischief? but i do think she'll have transitioned out of the phase of endless possibility that leaving gui gu afforded her, and into a place where she feels more secure in what she wants and who she's becoming. she has a place to belong, and responsibilities to live up to that go beyond the whims of a volatile zhuren.

and in turn, by the time cao weining meets gu xiang, he will have had to face the entirety of the revelation of her ghost-ness without her there as a counterpoint. without even the comfort of having gotten to know her so much better to lean back on to explain his disquiet and doubts. (i actually have a little oneshot i kind of want to write about him running into shen shen in that town, without gu xiang to pull him away)

he'll have faced the rest of the battles to come side by side with his sect, and have needed to find someone else, perhaps even there among his shixiongdi, to lean on. the du xie attack, the perceived betrayal of his shifu. it's a lot. maybe he'll have found some renewed place in his sect through that hardship, without gu xiang there presenting a clear way out. or perhaps he'll choose to leave, but wander alone. he has a lot of choices to make, still, and anything could happen.

but either way, by the time the two of them meet up again, they'll be very different people than they could once have been to one another, even if they're still very much themselves in all the ways that count. if they have any kind of romance, it will necessarily be more grown up.

he is, though, still more gu xiang's peer than either wen kexing or zhou zishu, and i don't think that cao weining has nothing to attract her. i think she definitely has the need for peers that can see eye to eye with her.

wen kexing and zhou zishu ride the generational line between all the horrors of the previous generation's grudges and the potential of the coming generation's healing past them. but for all gu xiang was raised in gui gu and suffered for it, she was also sheltered in a lot of ways by wen kexing. and she has a particular brand of optimism that someone like cao weining (and like gao xiaolian for that matter) can match. and while chengling can match it, too, i have distinctly other plans for him in this au.

i think it would actually be really sweet if gu xiang and cao weining and gao xiaolian end up quite close, once everything is said and done. and if this occasionally involves little trips to see one another in which she spends nearly as much time in bed with one or the other of them as she does at whatever restaurant cao weining has raved about in his letters lately or playing hide-and-seek with gao xiaolian's children, well, who's to say?

as long as she comes back home to wenzhou, how can they mind? they probably get off on rewriting the poetry of marks on her skin to fit the shape of their own lips, the dorks. not like she's any better either, the way she'd learn to taunt them and goad them about it right in front of all the disciples' salads all evening. pff.

anyway. i've been going on for ages and i'm not even going to go back and proofread this because i'm lazy. i hope some of this was entertaining at least, and feel free to reply more! though, as you see, asking questions is dangerous and you never know how long, and redundant, and irrelevant the answers might be XD

hanwenzhou thought of the day: it's one of those days where everything wkx and hy say is annoying each other. sometimes the vibes are just off and sometimes two people who live together have a bad day at the same time. however, this isn't going much beyond snippy remarks and passive aggressive gestures, so zzs isn't that worried about it. he decides to redirect it toward something more productive, though, setting them to lead the siji disciples in a competition against each other. it gets to the end of the day and they all come back to their room. wkx is glaring at hy who is glaring back. wkx is like 'a-xu, WHY were you encouraging this!' and zzs is smugly like 'oh did you want me to STOP this bullshit?? sorry, must have misunderstood. it was funny.' which makes wkx and hy look at each other, eyes narrowed, on the same page for the first time all day. sometimes the way to get over your annoyance at each other is to work together to take your husband down a peg.

Zhang Chengling continues to be an absolute gem, picking up the guy in blue's hat and bringing it to him. Clique or sect as a translation is interesting. Oh! So Fan Boy knows the moves guy in blue was using and connected it to the Four Seasons Manor. Interesting. I love how sassy disciple is like "Why haven't I heard of it" and he isn't listening anymore.

hwz thought of the day: for fun and profit I think there should be some dimension travel shenanigans where a han ying who's been like common law married to wenzhou for two years switches places with a han ying who is just in his chilling siji disciple era.

imagine, in one reality, hy waking up in wenzhou's bed with at least one of them spooning him and they end up with a knife to the throat bc his first conclusion is that this is a trick of some kind

in another, hy is a bit miffed to wake up alone in the room he barely uses anymore, but shrugs it off and goes to find his lovers, who are decidedly not prepared for a grumpy, tactile hy

and the established!hwz on either side of this are going to take one look at the alternate wenzhou and hy respectively, need approximately 0.2 seconds to detect the pining not one of them is willing to acknowledge, and decide to take action bc they've been there and they can do all their counterparts a favor

hy having a minor crisis bc wenzhou are not shy about what his counterpart is to them and, while toned down, they treat him like he's the same as their hy, and oh no he can't enjoy this bc his wenzhou don't feel that way and it would be disrespectful to them-

wenzhou bickering bc zzs is using the tried and true ostrich method to deal with the nasty feelings being dug up by this situation - if he doesn't look at it, it doesn't exist - meanwhile the only way wkx can handle the curveball he's been thrown is by asking hy after every single detail of their alternate selves and the nature of their relationship

on top of all that, the ridiculousness that comes from trying to keep the switch secret from the rest of the manor

one hy going home to his lovers who missed him and who got to thinking about the process it was for them to get where they are, and are subsequently very clingy

the other going back to tension so thick you could cut it with a mcdonalds plastic knife; wenzhou know that hy knows about their alternate selves and vice versa, and someone is going to have to find the courage to bring it up

idk in terms of unpopularity, bcs since we get absolute crumbs in the show a lot of characterization for their dynamic comes from fanwork yk, like apart from them admiring each other's work and that EXPRESSION yby gives xw at the feast. im not a daddy kink kind of person so ig that doesn't really do it for me tho i know lots of people love it lol but you can want to fuck an old man without him being daddyTM yk, and i think it's important for there to be a clear distinction between what they have and whatever fucked up awful shit xw and Worst Man Alive had. Another Wen Kexing-centric Crossover AU set in the CQL universe that blatantly takes advantage of the fact that his name is Wen Kexing:

In this version, Wen Yan, courtesy name Kexing, is the oldest sibling of Wens Qing and Ning.

When he's very young, Wen Yan tags along on a routine trip with his parents (him being the only sibling old enough to be allowed to come along) only to never return...

His parents wind up getting murdered on the trip — courtesy of Wen Ruohan — and it is at this point that things start to really diverge from canon...

The following events can go two different ways:

In one version, it's the Ghosts that kill his parents and so he winds up being raised in the Ghost Valley (much like in canon) only to eventually return many years later to get his revenge on Wen Ruohan...

In the other version, it's Wen Ruohan himself who takes Wen Yan in and raises him (much like he canonically does with Wens Qing and Ning) until he, once again, eventually gets his revenge on Wen Ruohan.

(Perhaps Wen Ruohan takes in Wen Qing and Wen Ning as well in this version, but distracted as he is by Wen Kexing he doesn't pay them much mind and so they mostly get left alone...)

Either way, Wen Kexing spends the majority of his life pretty unknown to most of the cultivation world, right up until he is finally strong enough to get his revenge on (i.e. kill) parent-murderer Wen Ruohan.

(NMJ: "I'll never trust a Wen! Wen Ruohan killed my father!" // WKX: "Oh, same hat." // NMJ: "What.")

It is at this point that Wen Kexing —

— who has since also killed Wen Xu, Wen Chao, and possibly also Wen Zhuliu (maybe Wen Zhuliu was the one who killed their parents on Wen Ruohan's orders?) —

— is then made the new leader of the Wen sect.

I also think it would just be really funny if this all happened during the indoctrination.

Think about it! Suddenly everything gets really suspiciously quiet for a few days and they're all mostly left alone, right up until one morning when they're all summoned and they're waiting for a while and Wen Chao isn't showing —

— and then finally some dude with a fan struts down the steps and introduces himself as the new Wen sect leader, tells them that Wen Ruohan and his sons are all dead and also, by the way, you're all free to go home now, so sorry about the whole indoctrination thing... 😬 Does anyone need medical care? We'd hate for you to succumb to your injuries on the way home... 🥺

for fem wenzhou week i am... providing you with sections of fics i would love to write, but which would clearly be 10k. first up: a real haunted house of a story, for the prompt "sacrifice".

This is a messy one, based on zzs's guilt about liang jiuxiao's fate & wkx's brief impulse to destroy zzs's martial arts during the puppet manor arc, and it's about what you do and don't do to keep another person. it's also about zzs being mildly possessed maybe and hallucinating about a world in which she broke ljx in an entirely different way. reality unravels bit by bit. but also did you know wenzhou are in love!!

this snippet is about 800 words. enjoy(?) some vibes

cn: mutilation, manipulation, hallucination, vomiting, a certain amount of gore

She holds the girl by the hair. Fingers tight to the scalp, so tight that torn flesh has lodged below her fingers. She holds the knife easily. The girl thinks her throat will be slit. Zhou Zishu presses the point of the blade in. In and in. It sinks through cartilage, and then through the delicate inner space where the voice lives. The girl gurgles and thrashes. 

After, Zhou Zishu sits her down on the step of the house. She crouches before her, takes her hands.

She breaks the fingers one by one.

She kisses the girl's pale knuckles. She wipes her tears away.

"Good girl, Jiuxiao," she says. "You see? You don't need to worry about whether to tell my secrets or not. You're safe—"

And wakes wishing that she wanted to vomit. It would be nice to be human enough for that, for horror to routinely induce nausea. 

In reality, I would have drugged her until she could never speak again, she thinks. If it had been like that. A knife—really.

After breakfast, she does spend some time retching—but that's just the nails working on her insides, making her body reject food. Her bile splatters across the snow outside the manor, melting it slightly.

She sighs, kicks more snow over it until it's hidden from sight.

Lunch is bland and warming.

"It's because we're running out of food," Wen Kexing says, with a decisive sort of untruth which suggests that she's learning to pick her battles.

"It's your job to make sure we have enough," Zhou Zishu says. She sips at the thin soup which is apparently what Wen Kexing thinks Zhou Zishu's stomach can take.

"It's my job to do everything," Wen Kexing says, with a smile which is too flirtatious for the context. "It's just too much for me, A-Xu."

Zhou Zishu's insides twist around the nails.

Jiuxiao sits on the edge of the manor's roof, swinging her legs like a little girl.

"It's slippery," Zhou Zishu says. "Don't fall."

Jiuxiao shrugs. 

Blood is crusted at the corners of her mouth, and all down her front. 

"Come here," Zhou Zishu says. 

Jiuxiao doesn't. She's in a stubborn mood. 

Zhou Zishu clambers up to join her instead, and washes her face. 

"Doesn't your shijie always look after you?" she says. "Don't be like this."

Jiuxiao ignores her. She shuffles away, further out, until only her broken hands are keeping her balanced right on the edge of the roof. 

"Don't—" Zhou Zishu says—

Her feet slip on the ice-covered roof—in reality, in the waking world—she wakes—

Begins to laugh hysterically, even as she's wrenching her body away from the edge. A dream of falling indeed.

There are hasty footsteps—the door slides open below—how good of Zhou Zishu's sleeping body to close the door after itself.

"A-Xu?" Wen Kexing calls.

"I just needed some air," Zhou Zishu calls—not because she feels she can't tell Wen Kexing what happened, but but because she doesn't yet understand what it was.

"Come down," Wen Kexing says. "Oh, you're not dressed properly at all. Come, come, I'll make tea."

"I'd rather have wine," Zhou Zishu says. She jumps down from the roof, brushes herself off. Her body twinges as she lands, not from the drop but from the way the nails gnaw at her.

"Wine, then," Wen Kexing says.

They drink wine together in the room they share, the room Wen Kexing has invited herself into and shows no sign of leaving. 

"Come here," Wen Kexing says. She dabs wine from the corner of Zhou Zishu's mouth, and now Zhou Zishu is the one balancing precariously on the edge of a roof. Is the one who can't speak.

A person can break another person easily. 

Jiuxiao is training grimly in the courtyard, as though she will ever leave Zhou Zishu's home again. One more caged person. A sacrifice.

"You don't have what it takes at all," Zhou Zishu says. She sounds very cruel to her own ears. She circles around Jiuxiao. This isn't right, is it? She didn't treat Jiuxiao like this, did she?"

This is a dream. Zhou Zishu takes Jiuxiao by the wrist, pulls her indoors. The indoors is as cold as the outdoors. 

"Shifu?" Chengling asks, tremulous.

It's her narrow wrist in Zhou Zishu's grasp. 

Bent over around her aching stomach, retching, Zhou Zishu considers poisons. Hallucinogens, she thinks. Is the increased nausea a side effect of drugging, or is it only another thing her body is doing because it is dying?

If the nausea is a side effect, then which drugs?

If it is not, then which drugs?

Correct for location, connections. Correct for durability. 

She kneels, panting. That she can reach no definite conclusion is perhaps the most troubling thing.

Oh bc I am not There Yet but I would love to know your thoughts. What would you put in a fic about a young(er) female Wen Kexing and her relationship w XiSan Gui? From osmosis I think that could be interesting 👀

Under the cut for canon typical Ghost Valley warnings and mentions of CSA:

f!Wen Kexing is brought into the Ghost Valley as a child in very much the same way, with Xi Sang Gui saving her after her parents’ murder. I think XSG probably works harder to bring her into the Unfaithful Department initially, but that would involve WKX being hidden away somewhere safe and she has a revenge plot to carry out so that doesn’t really work for her.

So WKX is no longer under XSG’s protection and she also has the Ghost Valley Master’s Special Attention (which I think probably involves sexual abuse on top of everything else) and she’s just trying to endure it and wait for him to let his guard down. At some point Gu Xiang comes into the picture (and for now I’m going to stick with the taking in an abandoned baby thing from canon but the much more horrible possibility for f!WKX is a pregnancy).

And so at some point, and this is probably where the fic would start, WKX turns up with a baby in her arms because she can’t leave GX alone during the torture sessions and there’s no one else she can trust to take care of her. And XSG can’t protect WKX from the GVM now (both because it would put her other girls at risk and because WKX wouldn’t let her after all she’s gone through to try and kill him) but she can look after GX and make sure WKX gets contraception and potentially medical attention if she needs it.

Years later, XSG is sent for and arrives to find WKX hunched and shivering in blood soaked inner robes on the Ghost Valley throne. As she walks in, WKX’s demeanour changes, she straightens her back and raises her head and looks her in the eye. And XSG hears about how she killed and skinned the GVM and is glad, but she's also afraid of what WKX has become.

I really like Jikjin by Treasure right now! I love the production, the panned "hoo-woo-woo-oo-oO" it feels like... I'm one of those people that can't bear to listen to ASMR but listening to this part feels like what people who enjoy asmr must feel like? Also the second verse with the backing vocals at the end of each line like "RAH! yeah. rah. RAH. What's up? Oh God!" I go feral every time, it's so much fun!

Also Flowering by Lucy I've been listening to it SO much recently. I know so few of the words but I keep trying to belt it when I'm driving. I didn't really like it a lot when I first heard it but it grew on me so much. Love the violin and I love those two lines before the last chorus where on the first line the vocals have an effect like a radio almost? And then for the first three words of the second line it gradually changed from that effect to just the normal vocals, like the effects are just automated to gradually turn off. It's simple and it's nice.

Bear with me.

One of the first I found and loved was Turn, a Harry Potter/Draco fic where Harry gets sent to an alternate dimension to see what would happen if he had made different, gayer choices. Also there's a pet snake!!

By the same author, Reparations, another H/D fic where Harry decides to become a healer after the war and during his training has to work in different departments, one of which it turns out is with Draco, working in a detox centre for addicts. Sequel Foundations. I literally go and reread those three fics every couple of years.

A Bucky/Steve fic called Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail, I love the style of this so much, it's set after Bucky pulls Steve out of the river in Winter Soldier, where Bucky is still brainwashed but seeing Steve overrides his mission objective from "kill" to "protect". As his brain rewires itself slowly from being basically a machine to being human the writing style changes with it. Turns out Bucky is a stress baker. Rewiring your brain is kinda stressful. They eat a lot of cookies about it.

Onto Wangxian, Counterpoint is a modern au set in Julliard, where Wei Wuxian is a composition major and Lan Wangji is a cellist in the orchestra. They meet for a string quartet project and so much music is woven into this fic, there's a linked playlist and it's amazing. It's one of those fics where you can just tell how much love and care is put into it to depict the music aspect so well!

Finally, just all of the wlw wangxian fics. I love them all, some are oneshots, some are longer fic, all of them are delightful.

Okay okay okay okay so I’m watching Mortal Kombat (2021) and legit Liu Kang called Kung Lao ‘Shixiong’ but the subtitles were like, ‘cousin’? Errr…

Unless all of my years watching Wuxia and Xianxia has been for naught, I am 110% and a lot of change sure that ‘Shixiong’ is NOT cousin and is more in line with ‘Elder Martial Brother’ which is what you call a fellow elder male student under the same martial arts teacher.

Zishu ignores the menace he married loitering on the bed as best he can. It goes as well as snow holding up against the heat of the summer sun, so it isn't long until Zishu gives up the ghost and viciously lobs a balled up wad of cloth in the direction of their wedding bed.

"Ah Xu, you wound me!" Comes the laughing drawl from the red tinged shadows. Zishu frowns, flicking out his sleeves before turning around to regard Wen Kexing, the Lord of the Ghost Valley himself, with a sharp-edged word ready on his tongue.

Only to find the annoyance in him clinging on to desperate embers at the sight of his new husband lazily throwing back his hair over a naked shoulder. Zishu's throat runs more than a little dry at the way Wen Kexing angles his body, showing off the way the gauzy fabric of his robe drapes over the pale swaths of skin illuminated a hazy red.

"What's wrong, my lord husband? Cat got your tongue? Or would you rather talk about last night instead?"

That brings whatever warmth coiling in his belly to cool and settle.

"Last night," Zishu says with a thick swallow. "Was a fluke and will not happen again."

This marriage is nothing but a sham - something to fool the other Ghosts that their mad leader is doing something insane again, therefore whoever was running an attempt to betray the Valley will attempt to strike again while Wen Kexing was on his 9-day honeymoon.

And therefore, Zishu was enlisted for this little mission.

The Window of Heaven was the only one with the connections to bridge the need between the Valley and the interests of the world at large. A delicate diplomatic balance was needed for a task like this. Letting anyone else but himself as Leader of the Window of Heaven handle a task as big as this would be gravely remiss of him.

It was only meant to be a farce, yet somehow, some where in between them making the deal with each other, it had turned into a true mile of wedding red instead.

"Oh?" Wen Kexing purrs. Soft laughter floats up in the silence and Zishu turns to him again, watching as his husband pulls himself upright, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "Was the fluke when you kissed me or when you had your cock down my throat?"

The teasing in his voice is clear. Zishu huffs impatiently, standing up when Wen Kexing speaks again, this time the words coming slowly as he closes the distance between them.

"Or was it when you had mine down yours?"

"That..."

Wen Kexing slides his hand into his own, pulling him back towards the bed. "How about we find out all the other different flukes we can get into, hm?"

Zishu coughs.

And only stops once to pull the curtains over their bed close as he goes.
