“Come on, Y/N, how much trouble could a one night stand cause?”

“A lot when you know that it probably wouldn’t be a one time thing!”

“Oh” She smirked “And why is that?”

Later that day as I was heading to hair and makeup, I heard someone wolf whistling at me. I turned around to find the blonde and female version of the Devil, right behind me

“You scared me”

“Oh, you like me” She teased, kissing my lips once more “You like me a lot” She smirked

“You’re so childish” I cackled, as an intense pink shade took over my cheeks

“And you’re blushing?” She hugged me tightly “You really like me” She attacked my neck with several nips, making me squirm and laugh loudly

“You’re so cute together” We heard Asuka say, as she passed by our side in the hallway

We both startled when we heard her voice “Fuck, I thought it was boss lady” Rhea chuckled

“I know, I almost shit in my pants thinking I was going to be fired” I laughed along with her

“Come get dinner with me tonight?”

“I don’t know, Ree...I don’t like to think someone can take a picture of us together and put it on the internet, just so then people can say that I got this job because of you”

“But you didn’t!”

“Yes, but you know how people are, they just assume things, and suddenly fiction becomes truth, even when it’s the farthest thing from it

“Ok...my hotel room then? We can order some room service, have a chit chat, make out” She growled playfully

“That’s all you want me for?” I teased

“No” She giggled “But I’m not gonna sit here and lie to you either! I feel very attracted to you and would love if we had sex, but that’s not the main reason why I like you”

“You heard her say something?” I asked, hopeful

“I heard a thing or two” She smiled wickedly “But I’m not telling you anything!” She laughed when I scowled

I knocked on her door, already regretting my choice for an outfit (which basically consisted of a pair of yoga pants, with a loose crop top shirt and some sneakers), but before I could run back to my room and change outfits, she opened the door and her whistle was what made me get out of my self deprecation daydream.

“Fuck, you look hot” She smirked

Shaking my head while chuckling, I said “Thanks”

She offered me her hand, pulled me inside her bedroom and pressed me against the closed door, kissing me as if her life depended on it

You know how dark worlds helps lighteners deals with their issues and have them experience growth? What happens when Shinji, Asuka, and Rei with other eva characters falls into a dark world? They have so many issues so wonder how all of them deals with them in the dark world

omg i love this. they would have a source of support and possibly learn to have a genuine friendship and connection with other people ... i really love the queen universal mom theory so i keep thinking. of asuka and queen having something similar to her and noelle and they're just having fun causing chaos. add rei to this too. i dont know if shinji would mesh well with queen but i think itd be cool to have him interact with toriel instead. this isnt exactly like. what the ask about but fjjshdjshdn eva/dr crossover makes me very happy ...

i see asuka, rei and kaworu in susie, kris and ralsei's roles(?) in the story but i dont know a good place to put shinji in so maybe he just tags along LMAO. i think itd make sense, asuka being in susie's place but also becoming more comfortable in what she cant do because thats fine (!!!) no one has any idea whats going on in the dark world, rei being in kris' as the main person actually making decisions because its rare that she ever has her own unless shes told so(i guess we are erasing the player here(. for kaworu it just? kinda made sense personality wise? LMAO. i guess shinji can also sorta fall into kris' place as someone who generally feels very empty and like he doesnt exist often. (sorry if like. this is starting to get messy i cant say i fully understand every character in eva unfortunately hdjshdjf i havent watched it in a while either)

ok so other just generally for fun crossover duos i wanna see is someone like lancer and misato. i think she deserves to have some fun

I don't know if you take history questions or not...but do you know of any good resources on the Asuka Period of Japanese history? I ask because earlier this year I started editing a novel I wrote about Princess Nukata, a poet from that era. I encountered a poem of hers in college and was intrigued enough to look into her more. I did do research when planning the novel, but exhausted what I could find pretty quickly - partly because there aren't many primary sources (the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki are the closest I could find, as well as poems from the Manyôshû), and also I can't read Japanese. (I'm white, but very interested in Japanese culture - genuinely, not in a geek way, though I will admit anime & manga got me into it initially). I consulted a friend who has a degree in Japanese on the matter, and even she didn't think there'd be much.

I don't know where to look, because most of the things we consider "traditional Japanese culture" today didn't come about till later, so I feel for accuracy I can't include those (though I bent the rules to include tea drinking, which I hadn't realized beforehand came later). But I want to portray the culture too. I remember one thing that came up when I consulted people on the Japan region forum for NaNoWriMo about this novel was that I shouldn't use modern-day Shinto wedding practices as a basis for Nukata's wedding, but instead try to find sources about how they were done then. Except, as I said, sources of any kind seem scarce.

I also worry, given the concerns about cultural appropriation (and about white interpretation of Asian stories prompted by Disney's Mulan remake), whether it's even ok for a white person to write such a novel. I just found Nukata to be a very interesting person, and someone in history that no one really knows about (in America anyway; I don't know how well she is known in Japan, though I know the Takarazuka play Akane Sasu Murasaki no Hana is about her, and she was briefly referenced in Chihayafuru) so I wanted to make people more aware of her.

I don’t mean to be flippant, but have you considered the sources in the reference sections for the wikipedia articles on the Asuka period and Princess Nukata?

Obviously, if you want primary sources, your best options are all in Japanese. However, I skimmed the wiki articles and noticed several publications through University of Hawai’i, Stanford University, Columbia University and Cambridge University. I’d also recommend consulting publications from University of California and University of Michigan for pre-modern Japanese literature and history as both universities are known for the high quality of their scholarship in this field.

It’s not uncommon for non-Japanese people to be first introduced to our culture via anime. In fact, the Japanese government soft power machine has worked very hard to use popular media to package our culture for your consumption. There’s no need for you to be apologetic about how you became interested in Japan. What matters is how you continue to channel that interest, and whether you are interested in hearing perspectives that don’t come with a price-tag attached.

Speaking bluntly, without fluency in Japanese, you are likely not the best candidate to conduct primary source research on this topic. I have friends who get PhDs on this sort of topic. The issue is not that you are white. I happen to know that quite a few of the academics active in this field are white. The issue is whether or not you have the appropriate linguistic and cultural competencies to write a compelling, respectful story on your subject.

If you wish to have an anachronistic approach to Japanese historical fiction, I’m not enthusiastic, but you wouldn’t be the first non-Japanese writer to favor anachronistic depictions of our history for the aesthetics. Frankly, I’m generally supportive of people writing about whatever topic they want, but something about the way that you’ve phrased this reminds me of outsiders who claim a desire to study a language or dialect out of a desire to “save it.” In my personal opinion, if you want to learn more about a Japanese historical figure, I don’t think you need to couch you interest in caveats like trying to spread awareness. I assure you that poets who show up in Man’yoshu are pretty well known both in Japan and by people who cover the field.

how strictly do you follow canon? 　i try to follow canon as much as possible for shinji in nge. for rebuild, mostly, only bc nge is my main version of shinji. it’s been a while since i read the manga, and there’s definitely stuff to like about it, but imo sadamoto’s writing there isn’t as good as anno’s is in nge ( and rebuild... to an extent ), so i’d probably end up changing some details for manga!shinji with whatever headcanons if i wrote him more often / went into depth about things? but it’s still interesting to see how different shinji and kaworu ( + other characters ) are in the manga, and new dynamics can be fun!!

SELL YOUR MUSE! aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals. lemme try and sell you nge first unless you’ve already sold your soul to it LOL join me.... tldr it’s a classic anime and still relevant today despite it being like 24 years old ( with tons of merch now most i would shamelessly buy ). there’s so many characters that feel real and human in nge. hideaki anno poured too much of his heart and soul into it, the reflections of himself and his personal feelings feel very raw. i could also try to sell you like every nge character bc they’re all so well written but mha;lskdjf on to the last point. being the main character for eva, shinji is iconic too... he’s among the best leads i’ve seen in anime. most critics will agree and have agreed with this for decades ( if you only ask me, he’s number one for everything bc i’m biased af ❤ ). i talk too much about how he’s bby / cute and does his best, but probably not enough about how flawed he is as a person too, his deeper wants and needs, and when those things go horribly wrong. the duality is really what makes shinji complex and human. also bonus points!! he’s frequently scored at the top for fav anime characters in japan since ‘95 in newtype and stuff n_n

now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting ( even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think? ). next to louder and more colourful characters like asuka, for example, shinji can come off as quiet and boring ( especially compared to traditional hot blooded mecha protagonists in general ). shinji isn’t a genius or leader. he’s super passive, introverted, shy, and bad at fun conversations. he saves the world and tries to do the right thing, so by definition, he’s a hero--- but he’s also just a boy who’s gone through a lot. he has a lot of depth and hidden anger / feelings in general, but it would take a lot for him ( i.e. pressure, circumstances ) to express that outwardly--- daily shinji isn’t really like that. fandom wise, i think shinji recently came in 4th in the NHK eva popularity contest, so that’s pretty good, people do like him there. kawoshin is also as popular as ever ( and i’ve also seen more shinji fans in the western side too ). meanwhile old nge fandom be like ‘shinji u loser get in the fucking robot!!!111 ur surrounded by hot chicks every single day and still cry wow’ but that’s more like an ironic meme nowadays LOL

what inspired you to rp your muse? i finally watched eva properly like two years ago?? ( too late 4 kawoshin 2015 fandom q-q ) it was good so i sold my soul to it and shinji mhasdflkj

if someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why? i’m a private blog, so if it’s more of a plot based headcanon that a mutual wanted to discuss for fun and in a friendly way, then ok! i think there’d be room for constructive discussion there ( ah yes eva and its 24 years of pepe silvia meme.png complex lore discussion still going strong )

if someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it? 　similar to the above and the constructive criticism thing, i’ll only care / be open to discussing that kinda stuff if we’re mutuals and if you’ve seen eva, etc.

if someone really hates your character, how do you take it? as seriously as a funny meme when it comes to randos LOL buuuut long answer too: i’ve also seen passionately mean spirited, usually terrible and equally as unironic takes about shinji on the internet bc that’s the internet sometimes rip. this version of hate is more annoying and can suck just to look at, especially if it gets lots of attention in the form of agreement ( it usually makes me think, did we even watch the same show ). but also arguing endlessly with whoever wrote it / believes it would suck even more ( being a waste of time for one ). i guess that’s one reason why i care more about the personal safe space i’m trying to create on my dashboard etc. and people have very different opinions about anything in general. but basically, in general, this: if someone hates x or y fictional character with such a burning passion, and they won’t be satisfied unless they try to convince others to hate them too, or say that fans of x or y character are bad people irl and belittle said fans for it on their own time ( or openly harass those fans ), and if they’re crusading this idea, constantly?? block, blacklist, report for harassment if noted, filter it out--- it’s definitely better to stay away from that kind of negativity ( also bc it’s absurd and necessary ). i question anyone who finds joy / importance in trying to police the content and comfort of others, but i also know that they wouldn’t have fun hanging out with me LOL kaworu vc surround yourself with people who love shinji ikari

of course! it’s a great show. i think women’s wrestling these days is both better and worse than GLOW right now <3 JFKDKDKDK like ok. i mainly follow... one woman. but also two other women. so three in total. my fave is this wrestler called asuka! she’s highly regarded as the best women’s wrestler by many people in wwe, some people even think she’s the best wrestler, hands down, in the whole company. and ya. i agree. she’s better than john cena. the rock. whoever u want to name. however much i love them i think she is better. she is the best and also achievement wise the most highly decorated in some ways!! she won the first ever women’s royal rumble in 2018, she’s got the longest undefeated streak (914 days) and she’s also gram slam champion! (as in she’s held ever single women’s championship belt before)... and there’s so many more things i could say about her. but ya i will chill for a second and talk about the gay wives who are currently evil <3

so they’re called sasha banks (snoop dogg’s cousin JFJSJDJSDJ) and bayley. they used to be enemies, then they became best friends, then enemies again, then one of them was like “i love you, okay?” and then they became best friends again. and they’re the first ever women’s tag team champions (something which only started existing LAST YEAR bc they kept begging for it) which is honestly? it adds to the gayness. how they became evil is this: they lost the tag team titles and people started spreading rumors about them. saying they lay down on the locker room floor and cried or something. anyway, sasha took a four month vacation so bayley was on her own. and she became a singles’ champion. then sasha, who used to have purple hair, came back, and beat someone up and took off her purple wig to reveal... she has blue hair now. which means she’s evil. so bayley is like cool! my best friend is back now yay <3 and everyone was like bayley, how can you be best friends with sasha? she’s evil? and sasha was like yes. i’m evil now. i think you should be evil too. here’s a chair beat up that white girl <3 and bayley took it and was like... yeah! and they beat up white girls together <3 and then bayley cut off her hair and had this whole new evil persona. anyway, now they both are the tag team champions again, and bayley still has her singles title from before! so she calls herself “bayley dos straps” (I KNOW FJDJDJDJD also yes. wrestling is for the most part, just people fighting over a bunch of straps) because she’s not a basic white girl :) and sasha is like babe :( bayley :( i wanna have two straps too :( then we could BOTH have two straps :( so she challenges ASUKA for HER singles’ title (ok so there’s three singles’ titles. Asuka has the RAW title and bayley has the SmackDown title, they’re the two main titles)

and last night they straight up ROBBED asuka of her RAW belt it was so funny. so you see, asuka has this move (u can call it a superpower) where she spits green mist in ur face so u cannot see. it’s the superpower she gained when she turned evil, she turned back good recently but she still has that power? anyway. asuka tried green misting sasha but sasha ducked so it hit the REFEREE instead. bayley then runs into the ring, hits asuka with one of their belts, and pulls the referee shirt off the referee, and puts it on, and plays the referee for sasha as she pins asuka. then, they ran away with all four belts. it was incredible

Jd’ Kawasaki Typhoon 8/22/99

WWWA Sekai Super Lightkyu Senshukenjiai: Momoe Nakanishi (AJW) vs. Sumie Sakai Weird to see a young Sumie Sakai AND a young Momoe! Jaguar Yokota is the ref! This match is entirely too long but it's novel to see these two as juniors--I say until I see Sakai take the highest high-angle plancha of all time. Christ on a bike, Momoe landed gut first on Sakai's face. So much could've just gone pear-shaped for Sakai's career/life. Sakai gives her 400 Germans and one Tiger Suplex as vengeance, but Momoe hits the quickest Dragon Suplex I've ever seen. Clipped trophy pose segment and we're off to match two.

AWF Sekai Joshi Senshukenjiai: Yuko Kosugi vs. Megumi Yabushita Flips a-plenty right at the bell, then for some reason they try to outdo the plancha in the opener and pretty much nail it. Willing to die for a crowd of 30 people; someone please unionize this industry ffs. Oh this is clipped! Odd, cuz it looks rad, apart from some minor goofs. Whomst among us, ya know? Kosugi dumps Yabashita on the gym floor and does a moonsault from on top of a radiator. Yes, even silver age joshi can be proper indie scum. Kosugi does the wildest transition into an armbar mine eyes have ever peeped. What monster clipped this? Why did I have to watch a month-long opener and watch this high-speed spine-musher get gutted? Jaguar's 3-counts are absurdly slow. Kosugi crushes Yabashita's clavicle with a top rope stomp, then does it again on the outside, this time to her shoulder. The crowd is confused and these two seem to have worn each other out, crushing bones and kneading joints into brioche. Kosugi counters an oddly-timed lucha armdrag into another elaborate armbar; then a Tiger Suplex, then another quick armbar, then the win. Yabushita wins the title!!! ??? !!!

Clips of undercard matches How dare they clip a Sakie Hasegawa match. No wonder this promotion tanked.

TWF & WWWA Sekai Joshi Ryo (two) Senshukenjiai: Lioness Asuka vs. Kyoko Inoue Ohhh boy. This is gonna hurt all of us. Lioness has a wee title belt and a 40ft long table. As usual, she is dressed like a character from Versus. Kyoko is dressed in a sari designed by the Ultimate Warrior. It's healthy to have an aesthetic, ok? Kyoko busts out a trio of power-moves right out the gate, but Lioness's second, Cooga, is determined to WCW this the fuck up. Kyoko forgets how to do a surfboard, and instead plops down into a dopey rest-hold. The crowd is understandably disappointed by this choice. They both seem tired. Would much rather have seen the entire 6-woman tag that got cut down to 45 seconds than all this prone sweating. It's clear by this point they're both past the high-angle suplex eras of their respective careers, so it seems like a tall order to make this feel competitive while still doing all their stock spots. Still, they do their best to make each other look great and tbh, no one deserved that treatment more than Kyoko. By this point, she'd finally gotten the push in AJW she deserved, and it was almost too late. Oh this is clipped! We jump right to a pile of chairs in the ring and a suplex doe-si-doe. Happy to see them work together, but with an undercard like this, these two can only seem slow, clunky, and tired. Not their fault, by any means. But how can anybody follow a battle for who can take the gnarliest plancha? Kyoko decides to take the high road and deliver as many Stan Hansen-ass lariats possible. Some really rough, confusing botches and general broken-down-ness is making this kind of a bummer. In very different ways, the mark and the fan in me are both concerned for these two. They both kick out of a billion finishers, seconds rush in with plunder, and the narrative itself is concussed. Some blue mist for good measure. Muta did more damage than he'll ever know. This is still going and I've stopped caring. They're climbing four flights of stairs and taking a chartered bus to the next spot. I’m out.

Let’s Get Ready to (Review the Royal) Rumble!!

I watched all 11 hours of this thing, so I might as well jot down some thoughts

Rusev w/Lana vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

This was the first WWE pre-show I’ve watched in a long time. Lots of banter from the panel, which included Shawn Michaels. I’m not sure how often I will watch the pre-shows going forward. This match existed, and it concluded with a title change. Nakamura is your new United States champion. Lana took a bump and hurt her ankle in storyline. “Lana, get up!” Rusev yelled at his prone wife after she was knocked off the apron. Show a little more concern there, Rusev. Later in the show this would turn out to be a momentous ankle injury

Hideo Itami vs. Buddy Murhpy vs. Kalisto vs. Akira Tozawa

I haven’t watched 205 Live in forever, but I hear Mike Kanellis is there now. This match was not as sensational as I had expected, but it had some good spots. No reason for these guys to go full-tilt, I guess. They’re wrestling as the crowd files in to Chase Field, and when it’s done they go back to 205 Live. Kalisto should have won by default, as he is the only member of this quartet who weighs 205 pounds or less. He did not win, though, and Buddy Murphy remains your cruiserweight champion. In a year, perhaps this match will feature Kushida, Trevor Lee, Sonjay Dutt, and Kalisto. Always Kalisto. Poor, lost Kalisto.

Asuka vs. Becky Lynch

Although it would later become clear why this went on first, it was still a little surprising. And, to be honest, I did not love this match. It finished up very well, but until the last five minutes or so it was a lot slower and more tentative than I would have expected from these two. It ended on something of a surprise note, with Becky tapping and Asuka retaining. They’ve succeeded in bringing Asuka back from the foggy post-Wrestlemania wasteland in which they stranded her. What happens to her now? Another feud with Charlotte? They should bring up Io Shirai and Kairi Sane and form a new version of Triple Tails. They will not do this.

The Bar vs. Shane McMahon and The Miz

Mark and I watched this entire match barely 12 hours ago, and now all I can remember is Shane McMahon doing a credible Shooting Star Press. Few things in pro wrestling are more boring, in 2019, than the state of the Smackdown tag team title picture. And now there are new champs. Perhaps this is the beginning of splitting up The Bar. They’ve been a tag team since September 2016. They’re both terrific wrestlers and have had many good matches, but there’s nothing about them that really sticks with me. It doesn’t help that they have one of the worst tag team names in the history of pro wrestling.

Ronda Rousey vs. Sasha Banks

I was surprised to see this match was almost 14 minutes long. It felt like it went by quickly. This was the best Sasha Banks match I’ve seen in a looooong time, and maybe Rousey’s best WWE match to date. She looked really good. The work with Gulak is paying off. Sasha also looked like the relentless competitor we remember from her NXT days. I enjoyed this match a lot. Based on what happened the last time I mentioned Ronda Rousey, I now expect to get several anonymous messages calling me a fucking imbecile. That’s OK. It’s true, I am a fucking imbecile, but Ronda Rousey is still good in a wrestling ring. After the match, Sasha held up the Horsemen/women sign. If Rousey is finishing up at Wrestlemania, I’m not sure they’re going to have time for the epochal Clash of the Horsewomen. Hey! One good thing about this match in particular is that Rousey didn’t win with her armbar. That’s good storytelling; it establishes her as a multi-tool threat.

Royal Rumble (women)

The last 5-10 minutes of this were an absolute blast, with Lana being unable to walk out because of her ankle, and Belfast’s Fit Finaly giving the green light to Dublin’s Becky Lynch to enter the match in Lana’s place. Cue a recording of the Wolfe Tones’ “We’re On the One Road.” When the field narrowed down to Becky, Charlotte, and Nia, it was a great moment. I am not a big Nia Jax advocate, but based on the crowd reaction, she is the top heel in the women’s division. Becky winning was a legitimately cathartic moment, and kudos to leathery madman Vince for making the right call. Unfortunately, the rest of the match was kind of a slog. The surprise entrants were great, and I was particularly pleased to see Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, and Candice LeRae. I once saw Candice LeRae wrestle in a tiny performance space that normally hosted noise bands and avant-garde literature readings. People on Twitter were complaining there weren’t enough “Legends” among the surprise entrants, but come on. The pool is not nearly as deep for the women as it is for the men. The biggest women stars of the Attitude Era tended to not be wrestlers, which actually was kind of true of the WWE women’s division even after the Attitude Era. They’ve already had Trish and Lita at the previous Rumble and the Evolution PPV; at some point, it’s not a surprise anymore. It’s also good to build up the future than to be like “Remember Kelly Kelly?? Well, here she is for three minutes of listless punching!” Maria Kanellis counts as a legend by that math, and she was in the Rumble. That was kind of a surprise. I had no idea what she and Alicia Fox were doing. It seemed like challenging absurdist theater, like they spontaneously decided to act out a scene from an Ionesco play. Talk about going into business for yourself. Swoggle also appeared and chased Zelina Vega around with a lascivious look on his face, which was, uh, unexpected.

Daniel Bryan vs. AJ Styles

First, let’s consider how great it is that a WWE championship match featuring two of the most popular wrestlers on the roster is in the cool-down spot after a women’s match. That genuinely rules. That would have been unthinkable as recently as two years ago. As the women get more and more popular, those Saudi shows are going to get harder to pull off. Hurry up with those reforms, Prince MBS! Haha, just kidding, they’re not going to reform their brutal autocracy. Oh, right; this match. This was a chore to watch. It was so boring. It was not helped by its spot on the card, but this listless, will-this-do performance wouldn’t have been good in any spot. These are two of the best wrestlers of the last 30 years, but sometimes it just doesn’t click. It did not click here. I was relieved when Erick Rowan made his mysterious (re)appearance because I knew it signaled the match was almost over. It seems they’re going to make Rowan some kind of eco-brute, helping Daniel Bryan advance his monstrous agenda of caring about the planet. Fine. At least he’s not dressed like a second-tier TMNT villain anymore.

Brock Lesnar w/Paul Heyman vs. Finn Balor

By contrast, this was a hoot. They knew they had to recapture the crowd, and they went at it full-tilt for eight minutes. The story here was great: Brock was surprised to find himself being pushed to his limits by this lithe little Irishman, and so after he won, he lashed out like a petulant, over-the-hill bully. An example of how you can tell a great story in an eight-minute match. Not every big match has to be 25 minutes. Especially not that dogshit Daniel Bryan-AJ Styles match. It would have been great to see Finn win, but the Irish have to content themselves with Becky’s Rumble win tonight.

Royal Rumble (men)

This moved along at a quicker clip than the women’s rumble, perhaps because it was nearly 11 p.m. EST when it started. Damn and heck, this was a long show. It was lots of fun to see Jarrett come out in his ridiculous 1990s gear. HUGE missed opportunity by not having Honky Tonk Man come out, but you can’t have everything. Johnny Gargano looked great, Andrade looked great, Kurt Angle looked very, very old. The best moment was when Mustafa Ali eliminated his current antagonist, Samoa Joe. The incomprehension and fury on Joe’s face were magnificent grace notes. Joe is such a great addition to the roster. It’s crazy that it didn’t happen sooner. No Way Jose was essentially used as a quick punchline. Boy, that guy’s main roster tenure has not been pretty. The big surprise I guess was an enraged Nia Jax coming out and entering herself in the Rumble and then taking four guys’ finishers. CUE: CONTROVERSY. WWE’s been dipping its toes in intergender wrestling for a bit, but it’s hard to see them going whole hog. Nia is one thing, but imagine the response if it was Alexa Bliss being ethered by Randall Keith Orton. Seth Rollins was the odds-on favorite to win (although I picked Drew McIntyre, going with my heart rather than my head) so it feels a little anti-climactic that he actually won, but whatever. Afterwards, he pointed to the Wrestlemania “sign,” which was a computer graphic visible only to people watching on the network, so to those in attendance it looked like he was pointing out the place where he spotted a UFO.

Go Home Smackdown Live for WrestleMania 35 Review 4/2/19

Last stop on the Road to Wrestlemania for the Blue Brand. SD Live has been the better show for almost the entirety of 2019, let’s find out if that trend continues on the go home show with a little of The Good, The Bad, and the WTF: Potato Face Edition.

The Good: Daniel Bryan continues his absolutely perfect heel work at the contract signing. Kofi’s stoicism and then flipped switch to emotion was also kind of fun but DB is the real star here playing with the crowd and flat out ignoring them when necessary. This was a significantly better send off to Mania for a big title match than Lesnar and Rollins gave us. If I have a complaint, it’s how irritatingly goofy Big E insists on constantly being. He basically gyrated his junk and made cocaine faces for the entirety of this segment and while I get that his deal is he’s a fun goof, it distracted from a solid segment that didn’t really need him or Woods.

The KO Show. Sure there’s about 100 ways they could be making better use of such a talented guy but these segments tend to be a million times better than Moment of Bliss so for this I am thankful. AJ and Orton continued the trade digs here in what has been a pretty good WWE Vet vs Indie Darling angle. I do question what the hell they can do at WM now that they’ve blown the whole Forearm into RKO bit but I’m pretty sure this match will still be good.

Samoa Joe gets back on track with a win over Ali. Much as I like Ali, this was absolutely necessary. Joe has been losing too much lately and he needed to look dominant here and did.

Otis. Basically everything he does on tv will go in this column for the foreseeable future.

Sanity makes a TV appearance, albeit to job in a handicap match to the Miz. Shane continues to be ok, not great, as a heel McMahon. This match build has been awkward but certainly not terrible. Looking forward to Shane’s insanity Sunday.

The Bad: Lazy booking in the form of an 18 person inter gender tag match that eventually devolved into a battle royal preview. This wasn’t without highlights such as Otis courting Mandy, Rose and Benjamin’s hi-five, Nikki Cross being a nut, and Asuka standing tall after Jeff Hardy foolishly turned his back on her, but ultimately this was a forced way to highlight the WM battle royals that no one cares about and felt unnecessary in a show that should be focusing on promoting consistent interest in a show that will be as long as a work day.

Becky Lynch’s rare weak promo. Basically a recap of what happened on Monday night, which was slightly lackluster to me anyway. I didn’t need anything quite so dramatic and overdone as Raw’s segment, but something more effective than Lynch standing on a desk regurgitating the same old schlock she’s been feeding us for two months felt lazy and weak.

The IIconics cut a promo ahead of the fatal four way title match at ‘Mania. Pretty boilerplate stuff from Peyton and Billie. Not that it’s horrible, it’s what they do, it just didn’t do much to convince me that they can win. So mildly pointless?

The WTF: The Twist of Fate. Riddle me this. Why do different performers sell it different and why is only when Jeff does the move? EC3 sells it last night as a half assed stunner, as many do. This move used to be a variation on the diamond cutter and it looked awesome. Some people still sell it this way, particularly when Matt does it, but when Jeff does the exact same move, about 2/3 of the time, the opponent sells it as a weird shitty version of the stunner. I want an explanation. Can I get some continuity anywhere with this product anymore?

The Smackdown Tag Title Picture and Alexa Bliss booking matches. The USOs are great. Them having the titles, while not 100% ideal due to the number of times they’ve had them already, is fine. What isn’t fine is no feud built to the biggest show of the year for these guys. They never seem to get a fair shake this time of year and WM 35 is no exception. Another freakin Fatal Four Way is inexplicably booked after we just watched the exact same match by the host of Wrestlemania, Alexa Bliss. She refers to the no no Jimmy and Jey had last week when the forfeited their gauntlet match in the name of KofiMania. This would have been far better served if it had come straight from Vince. He’s become a bit of a half assed authority and Bliss is the host of a show, not the GM. Why is she passing this message or making the match? It just feels dumb.

Finally, on to Aleister Black and Ricochet. How many title opportunities are these guys going to get in 30 days? Let’s count em up. Two against the Revival, both lost. This will be number 2 for the SD titles, one already lost. And they get a shot against the War Raiders on Friday night. That’s a fiver. It’s not that I don’t like these two guys. It just doesn’t make a ton of sense why they’re a team in the first place and despite losing every major title chance they get, they continue to get chances. I can’t imagine they beat the War Raiders at TakeOver. Maybe they win at Mania, which honestly I prefer over them winning the Raw titles from The Revival at any point. But what if they don’t? Then what? Some direction would be nice.

Certainly not awful but definitely lacked a real holy shit moment that made WM must see. The contract signing was good but not so good that I’m desperate to see Bryan and Kofi. There’s whispers that Mysterio might be hurt and out for the US title match so the Joe squashing Ali makes sense. God help us if Cena replaces Rey. How about Andrade? Or Ali in a rematch? Or even the triumphant return of the United States of Truth! Or.....OTIS! Similarly to Raw, there was stuff to like, other to not. Unbalanced, not amazing go home show gets 3.5 big Hogan Belt Whips because it did do a couple of things very well and there was little face palming. Stay tuned for One Chance in Hell this week, my fantasy booking for the Showcase of the Immortals. Top Guy.....out.

Last week, I called for a bit of reflection and honest from the WWE. And I think they delivered a solid week on the rebound.

I’ll admit, it didn’t start well as the first couple hours of RAW wasn’t exactly must see TV with Nia Jax and some questionable booking messing things up. But, Sasha Banks title win and Dolph Ziggler vs. Drew McIntyre’s Extreme Rules match changed the momentum. Add in The Legend Killer’s new lust for the WWE Championship and they were off in running!

Keith Lee carried the torch over to NXT with a career best promo on Karrion Kross along with a strong presentation in the ring Wednesday night.

And how about SmackDown on Friday! The Fiend unleashed again, FINALLY!

Plus, I’ll say this – the shows “sounded” better with some renewed energy. It’s a good start and no, one week doesn’t make everything ok, but it sure makes everything better than it was 7 days ago.

It’s a positive sign as we head to the year’s next major PPV at SummerSlam. I wonder if the rumors of the WWE trying to hold it outside on a beach or in the NorthEast somewhere in front of a small crowd come true. If nothing else, it would be a visually pleasing change for a night. And what’s with the announcement of a Payback PPV just one week after SummerSlam? Brings back shades of Tuesday in Texas back in the old In Your House Days as The Undertaker took on Hulk Hogan in back-to-back weeks on a PPV.

Star of the Week:

Dominik Mysterio – OK, I’ll admit it’s a bit of a stretch, but damn, that was some nifty kendo stick wielding Monday night. It looks like the kid might be able to handle himself. We’ll see in the upcoming weeks and we’ll have to see if Dear Ol’ Dad sticks around to see it. See what I did there…

Loved it:

Drew vs. Dolph II – While I don’t think we needed a rematch one week later, I give big time props to Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler for putting on another amazing match. This time it was Extreme Rules for everyone and they did not disappoint. Kudos to both for putting themselves through another brutal physical match just one week after their first one at the Horror Show at Extreme Rules PPV. Dolph, even in defeat, helps steal the show.

Randy vs. Drew – The two hottest stars on the men’s side of Monday Night RAW are now set for a collision course at SummerSlam. Sure, once Randy Orton made his feelings for the WWE Championship known at the start of the show, we all knew an RKO was coming to end the night for McIntyre. Still, out of nowhere, a feud that could be one of the year’s best has begun!

The Main Event – There’s nothing wrong with Sasha Banks and Bayley holding all the Women’s Gold in the WWE! Sasha has earned it now with a win over Asuka Monday night. The odd part of it is that the WWE used Bayley’s attack on Kairi Sane to make it happen. Of course, this tactic has been used time and again over the course of wrestling history. No shame there. It’s the fact that Sane is now gone from the WWE and they let Sane tweet about it during the show. Very strange indeed to those on both screens at the same time. But, mind you, only 13% (give or take) of Americans are actually on Twitter so take it with a grain of salt. It just shows lack of detail. Great feud somewhat overshadowed by a sidelight. Now, what does Asuka do next?

Hated it:

Nia vs. Shayna – Why on Earth did they waste my time with not one, but two segments that settled nothing. Jax just lacks depth on-air and it’s the same ol’ story. A battle between Baszler and Jax would be fine if they just let them go. But, to give me a short brawl followed later in the night by a useless (and short) count out was pointless. If you want them to fight, let them fight. Don’t waste our time.

Monday Night Messiah – If Seth Rollins is that influential and The Messiah, why does he only have one minion? You would think after months of saying he’s a cult leader, he would have a bigger following. Plus, what exactly in this continuing obsession with people’s eyes? I was hoping that would be left in the past with Rey Mysterio, but now it’s Aleister Black’s turn as he is on the shelf with arm and eye injuries after this week’s attack by Murphy and Rollins. I guess it’s Dominik Mysterio’s turn to take on the MNM. Let’s hope he continues to bring us to the Extreme with more than kendo sticks. But, it was a nice start for the younger Mysterio.

Tag Team Titles – I love what The Street Profits bring in and out of the ring and now they have a new challenger in Andrade & Angel Garza. They are so many ways they can go to get to their Tag Team Title Match at SummerSlam too. Maybe we’ll get a Bianca vs. Zelina side story too to make things interesting. Either way, the matches should be fun and if done right, it’s a pairing that could (and should) last on and off for the rest of the year.

Where’s Apollo – C’mon WWE – just be honest and let us know the deal with Apollo Crews. If it was just a neck/disc injury, wouldn’t Crews have done an interview segment at least? Maybe the rumors of Crews having COVID-19 are true and if they are, the WWE would be serving the superstar and its audience better by being honest.
