I am a dedicated water enjoyer but i have such a hard time believing that the "recommended" amount of water you are supposed to drink per day is legit ngl
According to google you're "supposed" to drink 125 ounces of water per day (almost a gallon). (I'm tempted to call this bullshit even just based on the fact that it's just one of several different answers.) At what point in the evolution of our species would this have been possible, especially in hot environments where you're out sweating in the sun and would need even more water?
Like okay, for one thing, drinking water by lapping it up or with your hands makes it a lot more time consuming to ingest a significant quantity of water. Furthermore, drinking from stagnant pools will give you illnesses that will kill you, and clean springs and mountain streams aren't exactly everywhere.
Did hunter-gatherers that spent their days tracking large game stop 8 times a day to guzzle down water? How did they have the fucking time to do this? Where were they getting it? Were they lugging gallons of water with them all the time in animal skin bags or something? Could they drink 4 standard water bottles' worth of water in one go whenever they found a water source? A lot of springs don't even produce water that fast??
Humans have lived in literal deserts for thousands of years!! Indoor plumbing is a new thing! Our culture is so water-centric that "around the water cooler" is slang for a casual social situation at work, most buildings have fountains specifically for dispensing drinking water, lobbies and hotels everywhere have vending machines that dispense beverages, and an important form of self-expression in public is carrying large, decorated water bottles. And yet somehow we're all chronically dehydrated and should be drinking more water??
Why would evolution adapt us to require more water than thirst can or will signal us to drink, anyway? Isn't that the reason thirst exists?
(Also, has anyone who makes this shit up ever tried to drink that much water?? I used to drink 32 ounces of water over a 2 hour period, and I needed to go to the bathroom every 10-20 minutes to avoid pissing myself, like I would be in pain within minutes. If my body is getting rid of such insane quantities of water that my piss is basically water and I'm going to the bathroom every 20 minutes, that seems like a clear sign that my body does not want to have so much water in it.)
But I digress. At what point in time before the modern day would it have been possible for a human to ingest 8 glasses of water every day or 120 ounces or whatever is supposedly ideal??? If "dehydration" is the default state and has been for millions of years what does "dehydration" even MEAN?? Make it make sense...

WE’RE NOT REALLY STRANGERS - ETHAN LANDRY 🃏
“Tell the other person to close their eyes and to keep them closed” Playing the “we’re not really stranger” card game with Ethan Landry!
Content includes: fluff! Card game, Softie! Ethan Landry, shy duo!
<3
<3
<3
You lay on the couch of Ethan’s apartment, sighing as you continued to add details to the Google slide. “You know y/n, it doesn’t have to be pretty, just copy and paste the information” you frowned. “I like it pretty, looks like we put more effort into it” You switched the background color to a deep blue, a smile on your face as it matched the other slides.
“I’m getting so bored of this” you mumbled, changing fonts and adding colors, copying and pasting pictures onto it. “How about we take a break? We’ve been working on this for the past hour” You looked down at him, a thankful expression on your face. “I was hoping you’d say that” You shut the laptop, Ethan sitting on the couch next to you.
“We better get a perfect A, we’re putting way too much unnecessary effort into this” The 20-slide Econ assignment was almost done, with only a couple of things left to add. “What do you wanna do?” He asked, chin resting on the side of the couch. You shrugged, looking around his apartment.
“Do you like card games?” You nodded, watching him as he went over to the game closet, pulling out a red box. “What’s that?” He placed the box on the coffee table, the box reading “We’re not really strangers” at the top. “Basically, it’s just a bunch of questions that we get to ask each other to get to know each other better, fits since like…we’ve only really hung out for projects like this” You nodded, agreeing. “Yeah, okay” you smiled, Ethan explaining the rules as he shuffled the cards.
“Okay, uhm I’ll ask first?” “Yea,” he pulled a card, reading it out loud to you. “What was your first impression of me?” You hummed, thinking back to the first time you’d met him. “I think…I thought you were cute, a bit awkward I guess. You seemed really smart so I’m glad I got partnered up with you” Ethan blushed at the compliment, thanking you before you pulled the next card.
“Who do you think is my favorite artist!?” Ethan knew you loved music, and he already knew the answer. “Taylor Swift…?” “Yea! I like how you know that” you bit back your lip, cuddling up to the shared blanket.
“Okay…do you think I like hot Cheetos?” Your eyes turned into lines, pointing at the empty bag of chips. “No Ethan, I think you love Cheetos” He rolled his eyes. “It’s a very solid chip, they’re good” he laughed, smiling at you. “Do you think…that I’ve ever been in love?” You watched as Ethan examined your face, eyes squinted. “I think…that no you haven’t, but other people have probably been in love with you” You turned your head, Ethan biting back his lip.
“What makes you say that?” He shrugged. “You Just have a very loving personality, it’s the first thing anyone picks up on” You blushed and he pulled out a different pile of cards. “Round two is…connection…what’s the biggest mistake you’ve made?” “That’s deep…” he nodded as you thought. “I think it’s probably…hm. Oh, I know. Not sticking up for myself in things that have impacted me, like a lot”
“Like what?” “Like…I was bullied a lot as a kid, I think that kinda messed with how I turned out” he frowned. He could never imagine people bullying you. You were so sweet and caring. “Okay…hmm what non-domestic animal describes you? And why?” You already had an answer in mind, Ethan thinking with his hand on his chin. “A cat?” You shook your head. “That is so wrong” “Really?” You nodded, “You give hamster energy” he looked at you confused. “Well…I guess that kinda does make sense” he was really random and quiet, but he was also smart.
“What’s the worst pain you’ve been in that wasn’t physical?” You felt comfortable with Ethan, so you decided to open up with your mental health issues, if he thought you were crazy then that would probably be the worst pain. “I think…when I was in this really dark place, it was a couple of summers ago but uhm. My mom was sick and I was just depressed…like suicidal” You played with the rings on your fingers, sinking yourself into the couch. “I’m sorry…are you okay now?” His heart hurt for you, looking at you with doughy eyes. “Yea! Definitely, being around people that I care about helps a lot” You smiled at him, trying to give him the indication that it was him you were talking about. “I’m glad”
“What would your younger self not believe about your life today?” You put down the card, snuggling closer to the blanket as the gears in Ethan's head turned, thinking for a minute. “Maybe the fact that I actually have friends?” He laughed and you smiled. “Really?” He nodded. “I never really had friends, I was always really quiet as a kid and- and like shy” he scratched the back of his neck.
“What’s your least favorite personality trait in a person?” “I really dislike pretentious people, like get over it. You’re not better than anyone” You shrugged and he nodded his head, agreeing. “Think of someone that you admire. What made you think of them specifically?” You were the first person that popped into mind, his face flushed as he began to speak.
“The person, they’re just so sweet and, like” he sighed, not able to put his feelings of admiration towards you into words. “They do their best at everything. They go above and beyond even when they don’t have to. It’s like they’re the perfect person and they have such a beautiful personality” he could rant to you about yourself forever.
You just smiled, nodding your head as he described this mystery person. He must have a crush on them, the way that he was going about it definitely showed signs, a small frown on your face. It was the last question of the connection round, going into reflection.
“If we were in a band…what would be our name?” He smiled. “Like, the Econ girls or something” “But I’m not even a girl!” You broke into a small fit of laughter. “I like Econ girls, that’s our band name” he nodded, excepting his fate as an Econ girl.
“What part of yourself do you see in me?” “Honestly, nothing…you’re too perfect” you scoffed. “I’m for real…I don’t think I could compare myself to you” he fiddled with his hands, avoiding eye contact. “Really? Okay, draw” he picked up the card, placing it on the table.
“When this game is over, what will be something you remember about me?” You pretended to think long and hard, already knowing the answer. “Everything, I liked getting to know you better” Ethan felt his heart pump out of his chest, trying to hold back a smile as you pulled the next card.
“What do I need to hear right now?” He chewed on the inside of his cheek, glancing at you and then at the pile of cards on the table. “That the person I thought of first was you” You could’ve screamed, and so could Ethan. His face was flushed as he waited for your response, your eyes just wide as you tried to calm yourself down.
He watched as you held back a smile, your attempt failing before you hid your face in your hands. “Another one?” You nodded, Ethan with a smile on his lips. “In one word, describe how you feel right now” The universe was working with him, all the cards playing out perfectly. “Happy..?” You questioned, nodding to yourself. “Yea, happy”
You pulled out one of the wild cards, pulling out the paper and pencils from inside the box. “Write a message to each other and give it to each other, open it once you have left” You tapped your pencil against the table. Tucking your hair behind your ear as you started to write.
Ethan watched you, attempting to sneak a peek but it didn’t work, trying to come up with what to say to you. The tension could be cut with a knife, smiles hidden as you wrote. “You done?” He questioned and you nodded, folding up the piece of paper.
“Look Into each other's eyes for 30 seconds. What did you notice?” You scooted closer toward him, your body nervous as you looked into his eyes. You always knew Ethan was pretty, but seeing him so close made you realize he was way more than just pretty. His eyes were a pretty brown color, creasing at the sides when he smiled.
His lips looked so soft, so pillowy. The perfect shade of pink. You started to even get a bit insecure about your own. Ethan on the other hand took the opportunity to examine you even more. He knew everything about your face, every detail, every mark. He felt his heart beat faster as you looked at his lips, looking back into his eyes with your lips agape.
The two of you got closer, Ethan’s light breaths on your face as he took your jaw into his hands, pulling you closer to him. Your body melted into him, your lips pressing against his without a warning. Heat filled your body, butterflies going crazy in your stomach. He tasted so good, so sweet. And the feeling of his lips on yours was addicting. His hand pushed to the back of your neck, pulling you closer to him if that was even possible.
He pulled away, taking in the sight of your puffy lips, your face flushed in a pink blush. “One more? For good luck?” You nodded and he read the card to himself, instructing you to close your eyes. Your eyebrows furrowed as you waited. 5 seconds, then 10, then 15.
You felt him kiss you again, confused but not mad about it. His hand was on your waist, pulling you on top of him. The feeling of his kiss was like hundreds of fireworks going off inside of you, euphoria filling your whole body. Just the feeling of his hands running across your skin made you shiver, pressing your hand against his chest.
You pulled away and he handed you the card, reading it out loud. “Tell the other person to close their eyes and to keep them closed…wait 15 seconds and kiss them” You shook your head at the card, Ethan pulling you into his side. “I liked that game” “I did too” Before you left you exchanged letters, opening it frantically in your car as you recalled the night's events.
Y/n, you’re the person that I was talking about, but I think you already know that. I'm happy I decided to play this game with you. You make me feel safe and I really like you…It’s easier to express my feelings in letters, but I hope I get to show or tell you in these next couple of rounds.
Yours, Ethan Landry <3

would anyone wanna hear my thoughts on how well suited grant would be for every single ranger subclass? yes? okay awesome because i already spent 20 minutes writing it all out on discord then realized i could post that on tumblr for attention
general notes: i am, lightly, in the camp that grant shouldn't be a ranger. i think fighter or rogue would have been just fine for a shooting build and would have made more sense, i really would have liked to see him as an artificer because that would be so cool, and i think just doing the critrole gunslinger handbook would have been the smartest move, even if it isnt quite made for snipers afaik. grant would have been a terrible gunslinger stats wise, assuming from what we've seen (he's mentioned as being the strongest kiddad in this episode which isn't optimized for gunslinger), but it still would have made more sense to me. also lark should have been a ranger. regardless! grant is the ranger, and rangers are one of my favorite classes in base d&d, so i am going to infodump now
Beast Master - Severely unlikely considering Grant isn't shown to have any animal companion. Also Linc would be furiously jealous. 0/10
Drakewarden - Also severely unlikely for the same reasons as above, but I think it would be really cool. Give Grant a dragon pleeease. Linc would still be furiously jealous though. 2/10
Fey Wanderer - Unlikely since it's more Wis/magic-focused than a traditional fighting ranger build. Grant is not a wisdom/charisma guy, he is a 'shoot people' guy. 0/10
Gloom Stalker - Not one of my top three, but one that I REALLY LIKE for Grant. The emphasis on ambushing and the idea of disappearing into the background fits snipers well, and I think the... edginess LOL just suits him. It would definitely set off his "I'm evil and terrible forever and nothing can change this" intrusive thoughts if he had magical blend-into-the-darkness powers. This is what I like to headcanon Lark as having generally, but I think if Grant is the ranger of the group, then it works for him really well. 7/10
Horizon Walker - This one is, if Lark was also a ranger, what I think Lark would be canonically. Once again, this means it also works for Grant. It's more likely to me than Gloom Stalker since Horizon Walker has a lot of focus on swapping planes, and that seems to be something that the kiddads put a LOT of focus on. It also deals heavy damage, which is fitting for Grant. I can see Anthony flavoring Distant Strike as a sniper shot purely based on the name then realizing his mistake later and pretending he was right anyways. (Additional note: This is what Taylor is, which I forgot until I googled it after writing this whole long post! Good job Freddie, I did not have faith in you to make that good of a decision (joke)) 8/10
Hunter - What is most likely because it is the most generic ranger. Anthony will never think about this as much as I do. It's also good for taking lots of damage, which doesn't make sense for a sniper but I think fits Grant's general vibe of being the toughest of the kiddads. 10/10
Monster Slayer - Just Hunter but without the flexibility. So once again, makes sense, and since it's suited for archery builds, that makes it even more fitting since it can even replace the Sharpshooter feat in some ways. 10/10
Swarmkeeper - Extremely unlikely but it would be so funny and also MADE FOR ME because this is my favorite ranger subclass. Come ooon Anthony, give my silly little guy a swarm of bees or something. 0/10

May I ask, how do you seed a bracket? Do you just try to roughly divide the most powerful competitors into different sections?
so the good news is, as long as you can come up with a seed for each competitor, the "making the bracket" part is easy. you can just google how many teams/competitors you have and the words "seeded bracket", or you can go to a website called "challonge" and you'll be able to have it automatically generate the bracket for you.
for the record, the brackets are generated so the higher your seed is, the 'easier' it is to get to the end - the highest seed should always face the lowest expected seed remaining in their next match. so in a 64-person tournament, the 1 seed faces the 64 seed first, but then it will face the outcome of 32/33, because "32" is the expected winner and should be the lowest remaining seed if every match goes as expected. (this is as opposed to their next match facing the outcome of 2/63, because while facing the 63 seed would certainly be easy, 2 is expected to win, if that makes sense.) this propagates down the bracket.
however, like i said, you won't have to worry about that much, because generating brackets is a solved problem you don't have to do yourself! genuinely do recommend challonge for generating brackets it is very, very easy.
okay. so, that's the easy part - once you have seeds, the 'correct' way to generate a bracket is a solved problem that other people can do for you. what about the hard part - what is a seed?
so in our tournament, we determined the "strength" of our competitors via "number of nominations". this mostly worked out - due to stuff like the fact we didn't circulate as well in dsmp circles as we wanted until too late, or the fact most low seeds had very similar numbers of nominations, these weren't perfect measures. (techno and quackity were especially under-seeded, i think, and a lot of the low seeds were treated by the bracket as more wildly far apart in power from each other than they actually were.) however, if you have something like "number of nominations" or "previous tournament rankings" or "ELO score" to work off of in your tournament, you can seed using that!
(side note: a lot of sports tournaments actually do rounds of what's called 'swiss' day one in order to determine seeds for a bracket day two, as do a lot of card game tournaments, but i'm assuming you want to do something like us, for which the concept of rounds of swiss wouldn't help and we weren't structured well for. but know that's also an option, if you're running something that's structured in a way that you can do that.)
however, let's assume you DIDN'T have our nominations phase. in this case, you're going to have to make judgement calls to decide who is which numbered seed. the thing to remember here is that your seeds are effectively the "expected" placement order in your tournament. the person you expect to get first is the 1 seed. the person you expect to get twentieth is the 20 seed. so on and so forth. you'll need to make some judgement calls on who you expect to get what place to decide these numbers. it's okay if it's not perfect (and for stuff like a sexyman tournament tbh it's gonna be HARD to get it perfect), the idea is for it to be around correct, so that theoretically, you've made a path that makes the "most exciting" match the last one.
so yeah, that's how you seed a bracket! hopefully this ramble helps and isn't just confusing! :D

thinking about that talk with @murmel-malt about how george's ages for these kids in F&B is just... a mess. Like we know George keeps his characters young (Look at... 90% of the cast of ASOIAF being like, 20 and under or what have you) and now I'm on a distraction rabbit hole of how do differently?
Which basically boils down to extending Viserys' reign, and then putting larger age gaps between Rhaenyra's children specifically.
But I thought: Okay, let's break this down side by side for everyone else who is staring at these ages in show vs book canon and trying to make sense of it. I want you to know that you're not alone in this, and I hope this could be a helpful resource for making your own narrative decisions.
TL;DR - the show time jumps do not track and make no sense and has weirdly aged people down and also up and so you make your own decisions. I've put my age recommendations at the bottom of the post.
We know Vizzy doesn't care about the health of his wife, since good lord we know what happened to Aemma and the text specifically states it was not only how young she was when she first started getting pregnant, but also the frequency she was getting pregnant/stillbirths. Like that took a toll. Luckily for Book!Alicent, she was 19/20 when she started having children, and could handle that better
We have two years between Aegon and Helaena, and then 1-2 years between Helaena and Aemond depending on when Aemond was born, and then four years between Aemond and Daeron
With Rhaenyra, we have:
Jace was born at the end of 114 (Rhaenyra is 17, and Jace is the same age as Daeron), Luke is specified as late 115, which... doesn't make sense? Like TECHNICALLY, you could get pregnant as early as three weeks after giving birth (I googled a... lot for this) but like really?
(ETA: I'm not saying this doesn't happen, we have it seeming to happen with Aemond and Helaena, it's the same with Bran and Arya, but as I address below, It doesn't seem to fit with Rhaenyra's character)
Westeros has a 12 month calendar. Jace is a december Baby, which means late 115 means... Oct/Nov/December, which means Rhaenyra was pregnant by February with her second kid.
then Joffrey is born in 117, however it doesn't specify what time of year. We just know that when Aemond loses his eye, Joffrey is 3.
Aegon III is born towards the end of 120 (again, Oct/Nov/Dec). We know that Daemon and Rhaenyra married in 120, not even six months after the death of Laena and Laenor, who died early 120 and Laenor not long after. so with this, like, is Aegon a wedding night baby? Had Daemon and Rhaenyra started boning before they married? (I mean, likely). Then Viserys II is born in 122, then we have a seven year gap before Rhaenyra's birth of Visenya.
Like, I'm sorry, but you want me to believe that Rhaenyra Targaryen who watched her mother have miscarriage after stillbirth for the first 10 years of her life wasn't gonna be more careful about this? Like George, just because we didn't have condoms and birth control pills doesn't mean that there wasn't some kind of bc was used (and there's evidence of that in our real world).
(and like I was saying to Mo: I mean at the end of the day, these ages don't matter, since 78% of these kids died and yes I calculated that percentage, and he wasn't thinking about people digging into the age things because at the end of the day, that doesn't matter for the story he's telling)
Which then brings us to the fuzzy show logic:
The Time Jumps As Follows:
Episodes 1-2: over the course of 6 months.
Episode 3: Two Year Time Jump from previous
Episode 4: No time jump specified but Alicent's given birth. Did Rhaenyra only go to Storm's End? In the book she traveled all the way to Casterly Rock.
No time jump is specified from what I could find for Rhaenyra's wedding but to get everyone there for Rhaenyra's wedding, to put together a royal wedding, you need 6 months at least. Given how big baby!Helaena is, we're looking at a 6-10 month time jump. And I'm sorry but by ship, it's taking like, two-three days to sail from KL to Driftmark, and then you have negotiations that last more than a single conversation. So I feel safe in assuming the 6-10 month time jump between Rhaenyra's return/daemon thing to the wedding. (HOWEVER, everything I found claims there's no time jump, but that's literally impossible because people need time to travel to King's Landing as it takes at least two months from Casterly Rock/Oldtown to get to KL)
Aegon is the child we have confirmation for on his age. He is 3 years old when Rhaenyra is married. We know that Helaena, on the show, is exactly two years younger since Alicent is clearly popping any day on Aegon's 2nd birthday.
The Ten Year Time Jump
Aegon - 13
Helaena - 11
Aemond - 10
Jace - ??? Book canon states he's 4 years younger than Aemond, but there's no way Jace is 6 years old.
Luke - 4 years old. AGAIN, there's no way. I cannot confirm an age for the actor (who did a fantastic job) but he's definitely closer to 5 or 6.
Joffrey - NEWBORN vs being 3 years old at the time.
The Six Year Time Jump
Aegon - 19
Helaena - 17
Aemond - 16?????
Jace - ?????
Luke - 14 years old which makes him 8 years old during Driftmark (Luke's age was confirmed as 14 at the end, he was 13 in the book)
Joffrey - 6 years old
In the book: Aemond is 19 years old when Viserys dies, which should make him 19 years old for the final time jump. But instead Aegon is 19/20 years old.
Tumblr media
SO HERE IS MY ADJUSTED SUGGESTION
It's just my suggestion, just my opinion, because again, none of this makes sense.
THIRTEEN YEAR TIME JUMP FOR DRIFTMARK
Aegon - 16
Helaena - 14
Aemond - 13
Jace - 10
Luke - 6
Joffrey - I mean you can keep him as a newborn to track but I don't think there's anything wrong with making him 3-4 years old IMO
ETA: adding in, Rhaenyra and Laenor talk about them trying to have a child, which means this actually builds in time for Laenor and Rhaenyra to try make their arrangement work instead of Rhaenyra just fucking off and hooking up with Harwin immediately.
SIX YEAR TIME JUMP FOR FINALE
Aegon - 22
Helaena - 20
Aemond - 18/19
Jace - 16
Luke - 14
Joffrey - 6 years (if newborn) or 10 years old.
Little Aegon - 6
Viserys - 4/5
I myself write a blend of show and book canon, but have tried to stick to show ages/timelines because frankly, more people have watched the show and I wanted to make barrier to entry easier for people. But the show timeline didn't make sense after Episode 5 so... here you go.
ETA: I FORGOT THE DRAGON TWINS but I suggest Baela and Rhaena to be the same age as Jace or Luke. Book!Canon, the dragon twins are the same age as Luke. Take that how you will.
THIS MAKES ALICENT AND RHAENYRA BOTH 17/18 DURING RHAENYRA'S WEDDING, AND 37 AT THE START OF THE DANCE.

“If they mess with you, they’re messing with me.” - (Prompt List 5)
Note: i’m sorry if my german is wrong in the ficlet. i used google translate, so blame that :-)
“Are you ready, baby?” Lena asked in the locker room, taking her arms around Y/n’s waist.
“I am. What about you?” Y/n answered.
“I’m ready to kick some asses,” Lena said, making Y/n laugh at her.
“Please, do not try to get a yellow card today” Y/n replied.
“Is that a challenge?” Lena whispered in Y/n’s ear and made Y/n shiver.
“Well, if you want it to be” Y/n mumbled back.
“Oh, stop it. We get you two love each other, but some people here are single” Jill yelled, making a few of the girls laugh.
“Aren’t you basically the only single in the room, Jilly?” Y/n asked, earning lots of laughs from her teammates and even from Jill.
The game against Bayern München then started and even if it’s just the first 10 minutes, Y/n could still feel tension coming from both teams.
20 minutes and even more tension after the game started, Y/n could see Lena having the ball and a good way for her to score.
“LENA. HERE” Y/n yelled at her.
Lena then looked down at Y/n and saw what she meant, so she ran a few meters and then kicked the ball to Y/n.
When Y/n got the ball, she ran herself further down the field, but then a Bayern München player came and literally went for Y/n’s legs and not the ball.
When Lena saw that Y/n went down, she ran down the field.
“Was zum Teufel?! Du bist nur für ihre Beine gegangen!” (What the hell?! You only went for her legs!) Lena yelled at the player that had taken Y/n down.
“Was werden Sie dagegen tun, Oberdorf” (What are you going to do about it) the Bayern München player said with a cheesy smile.
Lena then gave the Bayern München player a dry chuckle before walking closer to her.
“Vertraue mir. Sie möchten nicht wissen, dass” (Trust me. You don’t want to know that) Lena said.
“Lohnt sich nicht, Lena” (Is not worth it, Lena) Y/n said as she tried to stand up, but failed, so Lena caught.
“Ja, hör auf deine kleine Freundin” (Yes, listen to your little girlfriend) the Bayern München player said with a laugh and walked away.
Lena was about to walk over to the player once again, but Y/n took her hand, so she wouldn’t walk away.
“Lena” Y/n mumbled.
“I didn’t do anything,” Lena said.
Y/n then gave her the “we both know you’re not right at all” look
“Okay fine, but If they mess with you, they’re messing with me” Lena said as the medics finally had come.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Y/n asked.
“That if someone takes you down, then I accidentally tackle a certain player too. That makes sense right?!” Lena answered and took Y/n’s hair behind her ear.
“I don’t think that’s correct” Y/n said with a light laugh.
“Y/n, you have to get taken off the field. It’s not something serious, but you can’t play the rest of the game” the medic said, interrupting the couple’s small talk.
“Lass mich dich holen” (Let me get you) Lena said.
Y/n thought that Lena was just going to help her up, nope. Lena surprised Y/n with lifting her up in her arms.
“Oh my god, Lena” Y/n said.
“What?” Lena asked with a smile as she walked towards the side of the field.
“Du hast mich genau dort erschreckt” (You scared me right there) Y/n answered.
“Nun, jetzt sind Sie sicher” (Well, now you’re safe) Lena said and put Y/n down again as the medics had to take another look at Y/n’s leg, but Y/n still wanted to watch the game.
“Du bist mein Held” (You’re my hero) Y/n replied in a childish voice, making Lena laugh slightly at her.
“Bis später, liebe” (See you later, love) Lena said and gave Y/n’s head a quick kiss, before running back onto the field as the game started again.
“Byeeeeeeeeee”

Okay @anna-neko … and all the other people that found me(tho I’ll be writing to Anna here)
Buckle up cause I actually read more, so there’s A LOT more text!
Before I start, I'm fully aware that the book's premise is that the whole regiment turns out to be women in disguised(except one being trans??? That happens at the end so I won't bring that up till I get there). But for ease of talking, I will he/him everyone until they've been she/her-ed. Plus, there are other characters, so I could accidentally she/her a man thinking they would be one of the undercover women. So yah, following the pronouns corresponding to where I am in the book.
I wrote everything on a notes app while listening/reading, and then organized it. So my "knowledge" will flip flop since different parts were written at different points of reading. Also I’m playing around with the best way to show quotes. Okay here are my thoughts loosely organized:
—Critiques—
Some critiques. I want to start of with them so that we can end on a high note. At first it was hard for me to get that there were scene changes happening. Most books usually leave large space b/w the paragraphs, but at least in this digital book, it just looks like a normal paragraph spacing. And the audio book doesn't indicate that there's a scene shift, so there were a couple of times that I got lost because I didn't realize there was a new scene. Though I think I finally got it down how he switches from scenes, so I should be fine.
Also while I do like that he just says stuff, for example, him introducing Polly’s guy name by writing, "At least, Polly climbed out of the window, but it was Oliver’s feet that landed lightly on the ground," instead of saying, "she decided to call herself Oliver Perks.” At times I do need a bit more guidance. I can pick up stuff with context, but, sometimes it threw me off. For example, with the igor, while I would've gotten it eventually, I just decided to google it, because I was too distracted being confused to actually pay attention to the dialogue if that makes sense???? So I mostly like how he seamlessly intergrates new info, but sometimes I do feel like I'm going in blind, or suffering for not knowing about the previous books. Tho I will say the vampire lore was intergrated well. It's nothing so bad that it ruins the book for me since it's mostly executed well.
Side tangent, but I actually started the book by listening to it, so I actually didn’t catch the Olly name until I got to this line, “…but Polly was known to all the ferrymen by sight and the guard would want to see her permit to travel, which Oliver Perks certainly didn’t have.” I like this line! I mostly like when he does it, but yah, I get confused sometimes.
Okay on to stuff my other thoughts!
Short quippy stuff
Hee hee foreshadowing!
There was no question of anyone getting undressed.
I love that her nickname is Ozzer
Don't cry challenge(impossible)
Tumblr media
AAAAH SHE GOT CAUGHT.
Nothing quippy, just a funny line:
Tumblr media
Ugh. I hate strappi I hate Strappi I hate Strappi. Me and the boys hate Strappi.
You said these books are very pop-cultury. I'll say these aged well because I don't think I've caught any pop culture reference(or maybe I have without realizing) and I still find the book funny and it makes sense to me. So uh yah, go Terry Pratchett I guess.
—Longer thoughts—
Tumblr media
Am I viewing everything as an American, or is this a reference to don't ask, don't tell??? I don't think so cause nothing else about it is queer coded and also Terry Pratchett is British, so there would be no reason for him to talk about that. My brain just short-circuited because it's a military book and I'm American 🙃
Thoughts on Maladict—
Maladict carries around silver-gilt coffee engine (which icon behavior) so idk how allergic he is to silver. Is he lying about the silver allergy or does he just suck it up for some coffee (cause if he does, again King behavior). I think my fav soldier rn is Maladict (can you tell???). Polly think's she's cool, but he's the actually cool one. Love his whole "even though I'm sobre from humans, it doesn't mean I can't/won't seriously fuck you up." I love when writers explore ethical vampires/vampires blending in with humans (I really should read vampire books).
I think the whole black ribbon thing is cool! I think there's a book that follows a vampire??? If you're down(and it makes sense), I'd love to read one of the vampire books since I'm already so intrigued by vampire society! Obviously after I'm done with this book
Thoughts I wrote about Jackrum—
Damn Jackrum has to keep telling Strappi to ease on the racism.
I like how Sargent Jackrum asked Polly if she was fine with fighting Strappi. I knew that his whole "stop being racist" is more of a "WE NEED MEN" than him actually caring about fantasy racism™️, or that's how I saw it at first at least. But now, I think there's a genuine side of kindness to him. So I'm excited to see more of that (be it, seeing more of his softer side or being proven wrong).
ALSO WHILE WRITING IN POLLY’S SECTION, I REALIZED THAT JACKRUM PROBABLY KNOW SHE'S A WOMEN!!!! Oh shit, maybe corpol too???? Definitely Jackrum I think!
"What's that?" said the corporal. "My signature," said Polly… "You can read and write, too?" said the sergeant, glancing up at them and then back to her.
THEY GOT SURPRISED THAT SHE KNEW HOW TO READ AND WRITE (an abomination for women). Also... I might have gotten slightly spoiled trying to draw Jackrum. I didn't read anything but I saw girl fanart of him???? I mean, I guess he's also part of the troop, I thought it was just the soldiers. HE MIGHT BE MYSTERY PERSON!!!! Anyways, this is for future me to figure out… So that's probably why he's nice to her. NOW I'M EXCITED TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HIM. Before I got to the scene where Polly fights, I drew this cause I thought it was funny, while being slightly out of character. But now, I think this not that out of character (I'll have to see). Anyways have this shitty little doodle.
Tumblr media
Thoughts on Polly—
I was very slow to realize that Polly's from Borogravia. As for why Polly joined, Polly definitely doesn't believe the propaganda, so my best guess is that she's going to try and find Paul. Reading about her missing Paul absolutely broke my heart. Though it's very interesting how also she was raised.
Also I got so scared when she got caught even tho I knew it would happen eventually, just didn't think it would happen THIS early in the book! I knew the moment mysterious person gave Polly the sock. I find it funny how Polly was like, “damn I thought I was cool mysterious kid". Her inner monologue is pretty funny.
I didn't ask you for one, Polly thought, quite annoyed at being taken for being a frightened young lad when she was sure she'd come over as quite a cool, non-ruffled young lad.
Also I'm pretty sure mystery person is a girl, cause I know the permis of the book so it makes this line funny
"Why, is this the escutcheon of Her Grace the Duchess I see in front of me?" said the whisperer. "Well, it won't be in front of me for long. Beat it ... boy."
Wrote this section on mystery person before the realization 🧍🧍🧍. Now I don't know. AAAAAAAAH.
Also, I'm glad that Polly gave Strappi a taste of his own medicine. Tho Private Parts is kinda funny 🏃🏃🏃. Insert: "that's a good joke, a great joke even, but I'm gonna have to ask you to stop,” audio. Seriously tho, it's pretty cool how Polly's experiences from her childhood with her dad and the other soldiers has helped her to blend in at this point. She was funny when she was like:
"I'll try not to hurt him either, Sarge," said Polly, and then cursed herself for the idiot bravado. It must have been the socks talking.
I read it twice and listened to it a 3rd time, since I had to write this and I laughed each time. I can't believe I find this dick joke so funny, I'm truly an immature child. Also fuck man. The way Polly saw people die, or just the discussions of how wars fucks people up. I have nothing insightful to say. Just, man, war's rough (<- biggest understatement of the century).
Other Book thoughts—
One thing I wasn't expecting, was for the crew to be made up of so many fantasy™️ creatures. But that one is fully on me since the book is called monstrous regiment. I guess I was so focused on what I've heard about the book, that I just completely glazed pass that. I see that there is some fantasy racism™️, so hopefully that's done well. I'm not saying it's always bad, but a lot of time people try to do metaphors, but it falls apart (ex: monster=racism allegory, when one of the characters is literally Mexican (and is brown). I'm not naming the name of the show on purpose). I do think it can be done well when you take the more, "prejudice is a thing, this is how it would play out with these creatures," and you don't make it a one-to-one with any particular minority. I feel like that's a more productive criticism of bigotry that can be applied to minority groups. I mean, I think there can be some one-to-one allegories that make sense, but it needs to be done carefully. I hope I'm making sense. But so far, I don’t see anything that bothers me. Just have my guard up a bit.
—✨Deeper✨ Thoughts on the book—
I kinda alluded to this in the previous review but yah, it's very interesting how Terry Prachet writes about war. I mean, I'm only 18, so I won't pretend to know much about the world, but I think this book has very strong themes about the dangers of nationalism and what not. And obviously he exaggerates it in the book, but it can be applied to a lot of modern situations. Side tangent, but I'm not really a patriotic person. I'm glad that my country has provided me better opportunities than my parent’s country, but I've always seen being so patriotic to a fault very weird. Also, this is clearly a criticism of the monarchy. "God save the duchess" like, come on. Down to this religious fervor they treat the duchess with, that they pray to it. I feel weird commenting too much, since I'm not as connected/involved/know too much about the politics of the monarchy (I mean technically the US is an ex-British colony, but rn relationship b/w the US and the UK is way better than other countries with the UK). All I'll say is that I don't care how nice she was, she was a colonizer and the monarchy has and continues to harm people to this day. Also back to nationalism, I've always hated the whole "people from this country suck". Like maybe the government sucks but you can never ascribe what the country does to the people of said place.
Honestly I feel weird commenting on this book in general, because I have barely any religious experience, haven't been too exposed to war, nor am I British (I mean this more in respect of the whole monarchy thing). Also, even though I'm a woman, I haven't felt much sexism. Like no cat-calling, most of the people respect me. Besides, "normal sexism," aka unconscious bias stuff like, "strong men help me pick the heavy stuff,” I don't think I have had any notable experiences of sexism or have seriously felt it in my life. So I feel like I can't give any deep observation about sexism or religion besides, yup that sounds right! Same with any the politics about war than, yup nationalism bad! I'm really aware that I'm just an 18 yr old who doesn't know much cause young people think they know everything (I mean that gets thrown a lot to invalidate young activists but there is a kernel of truth of: less experience=less knowledge of the world). Basically, I am noticing deeper themes in the book, but don’t expect me to talk about these parts if the book too much, because I don’t think I have anything productive to add. I just feel super unqualified to comment on much of this, and like I could be wrong about 100 different things I just said.
Umm… with that being said,
—Some quotes that I thought were interesting but I can't articulate why rn—
"At Paul's insistence, she'd read the whole of 'From the Mothers of Borogravia!!' to him, including the bits about heroes and there being no greater good than to die for your country. She wished, now, she hadn't done that. Paul did what he was told. Unfortunately, he believed what he was told, too."
"Several copies of the pamphlet seemed to have reached every home, even so. It was very patriotic. That is, it talked about killing"
"She'd learned to read and write after a fashion because the inn was big and it was a business and things had to be tallied and recorded. Her mother had taught her to read, which was acceptable to Nuggan, and her father made sure that she learned how to write, which was not. A woman who could write was an Abomination Unto Nuggan, according to Father Jupe; anything she wrote would by definition be a lie."
"She'd be funny just as long as she was useless, and safe as long as she was funny." Ugh yah, some men get really threaten by women being better than them
Misc—
Thank goodness for the audio book. I love when authors write in the accents, I think it creates character and it's very creative... but I'm terrible at trying to understand what they're saying. I've been doing a mixture of audio book only, audio book plus text, and just reading text. Anyways, I was reading a line Strappi said where he was mocking Maladict and I literally couldn't understand it until I listened to that part later when I could use my headphones again.
"Private Bloodfnucker hnas a fnord, Fnargeant," he said accusingly.
This was the line btw. All hail audiobooks everyone 🧎🧎🧎
Also damn digital books and audio books help me actually pick up the book and it makes it a lot less intimidating. I like reading but, sometimes my brain views it as a chore. Like I used to start books, LIKE THEM, and then proceed to NOT finish them. I have been using audiobooks in the past but it was while reading the book, and almost never just the audiobook (unless I had didn't finish a chapter in time for class). But man, actually leaning into how my brain works makes it easier. Who would've thought! (Like I always forget how useful hearing the text it, even though I have been using this tip for years). So yah, even though I think I prefer the experience of physical books, I need to just let myself read the easiest ways to me. Audiobook only, has been nice since it takes the least amount energy, but it is the hardest for me to understand, especially if it gets too flowery/lore-y. So warning, I’ll miss small details because of this. I usually go back and skim the parts I did audio only, but I’ll still miss stuff.
Also, I'm using hoopla(and when the 21 days are up, my libby ver of the text should be available), but tip! If you like to annotate, download books on PDFs and annotate using the comments. Honestly, great with research papers too! I love to highlight with different colors and then you filter the annotations, amazing really. Obviously you can do this in irl books but I like that I can write more in the comment section thingy than in the margin of books.
But yah! I'm liking the book so far. I like how Terry Pratchett writes and I like Polly as a mc.
I will add alt text some other date cause I don't have the mental energy rn. If someone besides Anna find it and wants them, just @ me in the comment and I'll @ you when I finish this Also gonna add links to the previous and next review for better organization.

UUUUGGGGGHHHHH
uuuuggggghhhhh
I'm not 100% sure how we got back here, folks, but I'm 100% obsessing over music and guitars for the first time since I was a teenager.
Guys...it's bad.
And for those who've known me for a long time here you may be hearing about this for the first time, but I could not get enough of playing guitars, reading about guitars, and listening to as much guitar music as I could when I was a teenager.
Could I actually play? Not really. I mean, not if you're talking about any lessons at all or trying to learn from a book or anything. I just kind of picked it up and kept playing around for years, just laying down riff after riff and playing with solo after solo. Just fucking around.
And then, eventually, I needed money and didn't have space anymore and I had to sell everything. I thought that door was closed by the time I was in my early 20's, starting to really work for a living and trying to live an adult's life. I looked back on those years a bit wistfully but with a real feeling that I had left childish things behind me...
Until the last month or so. I think I can point the finger squarely at us attending the Guns N' Roses show. Even with 100° F heat and me wishing that I had brought my earplugs I got swept away with it all, specifically with Slash. He'd change guitars regularly, usually for something that I was familiar with him playing. After the show I got curious and looked up his gear online to discover the web pages devoted to his guitars and his playing in general. Then I started Googling some guitars to see if they're still around, and any variations...and how have amps changed in the last 25 years...oh, emulators sure have come a long way...and they're fairly affordable...and while Fender's lineup has changed significantly since the 90s they still have a lot of decent guitars at reasonable prices...
All the while I'm also getting back into bands and songs I haven't heard in up to decades, just gorging myself on all the 90s rock I also "put away" at some point in my 20s, like one of my favorite bands, Hum, and getting into groups I could have really dug at the time, like My Bloody Valentine, and exploring newer stuff like finally getting more into Red Fang's discography...and then new bands and sounds spiraling off of those listens and searches...
And guys...GUYS...since I was into guitars this whole internet thing exploded, so I can hear guitars and amps and pedals and interviews that simply weren't available to me when I was previously obsessed. I can get a far better sense for things than driving an hour away to the nearest Guitar Center only to keep my hands in my pockets as I look at gear and equipment, too afraid to do anything in public, eventually going home and noodling by myself for a while.
And did you know that there are a ton of free or paid online classes where you don't have to interact with a human if it makes you feel self-conscious or anxious? And did you know that the Fender Mustang Micro Amp can fit in your pocket, has some EQ and preset sound options, a headphone jack, and can plug directly into your computer? And it's only $120 for an amp that's more versatile than the one I had 30 years ago AND it can help you can basically use it as a direct-to-computer recording device? And, holy crap, but GarageBand, while simple, is still a very competent recording suite and it's just free, right there on my Mac and everything?
Okay, breathing.
Because this is how it goes for me. I get all interested in something, all wound up, and I imagine how cool things can be, what I'll do, how things will turn out, all with an overactive imagination, until I'm just done with it and I move on. Except I don't know if I move on because I never follow through or if it's because I just fixate on things in a capricious manner. If it's because I never follow through then I should change that by following through (hello, writing ideas from five months ago that turned into nothing). But if it's because I'm capricious then I should just let it be and it'll ride itself out.
Now: how can I tell the difference without a lot of time, money, and effort? That's the question.
But it's been kinda fun as a weird hobby, just looking and reading and watching and listening. Maybe the fear of disappointment will be enough to keep me away from actually doing it, which isn't great, and maybe I should pursue more things that I think will bring me joy, even if I never truly get into it or keep it going for long, because life is short and pursuing happiness should be one of life's goals.

20 Fanfic Questions
Thanks for the tag (days and days ago now) @randomfoggytiger.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 21 as of today, which is kind of wild. (I have some on Gossamer, too, because: old.)
2. What's your total AO3 words count?306,501. Working on another longer-ish one that will bump that up.
3. What fandoms do you write for?The X-Files by and large. One time I wrote a fic for a very popular fandom of the 00s I never actually posted, and now I feel differently about that fandom and never will. I can imagine a world where I might write for another fandom, but I am pretty XF-centric right now.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?Chicken Dinner, Pause, The Boy on the Beach, The Kaleidoscope, Unobserved.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?I do respond to comments, but not all the time. I get behind in responding, and then I have to not respond to any of them to make it consistent, if that makes any sense at all? (Because someone might wonder—why did she respond to that comment and not to mine?) I know, I know, I'm sorry.  I honestly love every single comment, and I prefer to respond to them. When I have my life together, I have had great conversations in comments before.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? As I read over my work, I have not done a lot of angsty endings, although I have plenty of angst. I have a very old fic written the summer between season 7 and 8 called Opposition and Synthesis (one of many post-Requiem fics) that is on Gossamer and ends angsty, but that’s not a widely read piece any more, lol. I would say of my more recent work, probably Ice Water ends the angstiest.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I have lots of happy endings. I couldn’t say.
8. Do you get hate on fics?Nooooo, not per se. I have gotten very critical comments from people who are disappointed by the turn the fic has taken, or comments taking issue with my interpretation of canon. I remember someone didn’t like the idea of Scully going on dates at all in the break-up era, and they complained about that in the comments on End of Story. That’s a difference in headcanon, so sometimes it’s frustrating when people feel theirs should prevail. But I haven’t really received what I would call “hate” exactly (so far) for which I am grateful.
9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? I have, but it’s not my favorite. It’s completely hypocritical of me because I like to read it, but it’s not my most comfortable area of writing. I think it’s a problem of not being terribly visual.  I do feel sometimes it’s necessary to a story, and my betas peer pressure me into including it sometimes, too.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?I haven’t.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. People translated some of my fic into Russian one time.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. I would like to do that.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Mulder and Scully. Duh.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Okay, I have told this story a few times, so bear with me if you’ve heard it, but I had a WIP I hadn’t finished between 2000-ish and 2021. That’s right. Twenty years. It would be very reasonable to assume I was never finishing that fic, as the first two parts had been up on Gossamer for years and I had not been seen or heard from in decades. Then during the pandemic I came back to thinking about the show, and when I came back to the fandom there were oddly people who still knew my fic. And I remembered this WIP and still had some of the ancient Word files of later chapters on my Google drive, so I decided to make a little project of finishing it and posting it to AO3. And now it’s finished. (It’s called Bloodline. You can read it and see if you can tell where the narrative is written 20 years apart.)  So I don’t believe in doubting you’ll ever finish WIPs. Never say never.
16. What are your writing strengths? I think dialogue. I would not have said plotting when I restarted this hobby, but I do think I have gotten better at plotting. And I do plan things out. I do a lot of research.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Smut. Logistics in moving around in general – like when someone is standing or sitting and how they move from one place in the room to the other. I write in present tense a lot but past tense sometimes, so sometimes I mess up tense absent-mindedly. I’m also a very slow writer who rewrites a lot. When I see people get a prompt and then post the fic a few days later, my mind is blown, because I could absolutely never. People who do Fictober also have my deep respect, because that would be a very, very hard thing for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would only do it very sparingly or with extensive help, as I’m not a fluent speaker in anything but English. I could probably write a little French or Spanish dialogue to understand (I think I did write a tiny bit of Spanish dialogue in We’re Not Here To Get Involved In Personal Problems). But I would really want a more fluent speaker to look it over if I were doing any significant amount.
19. First fandom you wrote for? The X-Files, really, if you don’t count that middle school Victoria Holt romance novel sequel I wrote for English class.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? I’m going to choose three, okay? Is that egotistical? I’m sorry if so. I’ve always really liked Jackson Van De Kamp’s Not-So-Final Repose. It’s not perfect, but it’s quirky and fantastical and sentimental and has a special place in my heart. It’s also more like a play, which is probably one of the genres my writing is most influenced by. I also really like The Boy on the Beach, which took a year to write and involved so, so much research, which was fun and a positive experience. Finally, I like How To Eat Pleasant Holiday Meals With Co-Workers, which was a prompt for a holiday exchange (early MSR Thanksgiving) that I expanded into a series of Thanksgivings over the years. I ended up really enjoying imagining each of those Thanksgivings, especially the last one. That last one is my forever post-revival headcanon now lol.
Would anyone like to do this? I'm going to tag @mollybecameanengineer if she hasn't yet, but anyone should.

oh god where did i leave off. oh fuck i left off with THAT? oh geez sorry
in my defense, the music in the next area is great so i didn't want to leave and i'm almost to the boss i think? Reverie, Yukiko, and Kanji make a DEADLY team, and while I am Big Mad at Yosuke:
he starts every battle first and has tentafoo/Cause Panic. so. he's just maddeningly useful, idk what to say.
Tumblr media
Huh I somehow thought the other character was next but it's Rise time!
Man. I like Rise a lot. Out of all the romance options she's the only one I'm considering at all because she's neat. Rise is an idol who is taking a break from the business to return home to Inaba and recuperate. And right from go, she is just on another level from everyone else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She knows about the Midnight Channel (though doesn't understand it's a supernatural hit list yet) and is aware of the dangers around her. The Idol business in all its forms across the world fucking Sucks and it's clear to see it's had an effect on her, like emotional stretch marks from having to mature really fucking fast. She's been in her late 20s since she was 13 and it shows.
Oh and she's working in her family's tofu shop for the time being.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
/googles ganmodoki
oh i would try this in a fucking heartbeat. Also, Yosuke, bro, what do you mean you don't eat tofu. Like... no tofu ever? I'm American and I eat tofu. It's good.
(I do genuinely want to eat more tofu but I cook for a whole household and they are less willing to let me experiment with tofu. Please pity me. 8C I heard if you squeeze out all the liquid or even freeze them first, they become really easy to fry? Anyway. Sorry, I cook a lot.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway aw shit Rise inadvertently reveals to Dojima that we're working this case. Worse, Dojima is not immediately angry or confrontational about it. OH NO, he purposefully avoids being confrontational about it.
Instead he puts Adachi on our tail.
Tumblr media
Look at that man's face. Does this motherfucker have a single candle on behind those eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which leads to discovering a stalker who Adachi arrests as the murderer.
GODDAMMIT ADACHI. Whatever, it gets him out of our fucking hair.
Tumblr media
buuuuut in that time, Rise got got. goddddddfuckingdammit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An idol who's shadow self is on some level genuinely an exhibitionist. Whoo boy that's... a lot. Also, out of all the shadows, I find Rise's the most creepy, weirdly? Maybe because Idol Culture scares the shit out of me and I don't even remotely understand the appeal. It's like this terrifying black box of concepts I can't divine anything out of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In TV World, I feel SUPER BAD for Teddie. I keep flying through these dungeons in one or two days and not really coming back to the TV World to see him. Which is a shame because I genuinely love Teddie! I think he's top three characters for me right now.
I was trained in the unhallowed halls of Tartarus, I know how to curbstomp a dungeon, okay? I wish I was around more for Teddie. 8C
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOSUKE HANAMURA WE ARE GONNA STEP OUTSIDE IF YOU MAKE TEDDIE SAD, DO YOU HEAR ME?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i just went from Big Mad to cackle in like a minute. CHIE OH MY GOD. "Aw buddy, you're sad? Yeah, you can hit on me, I'm cool with that!" i'm dying. it kind of says a lot about Chie's opinion of Teddie vs everyone else since she's the one who shoved the boys into the river at camp.
She has standards, is what I'm saying, and I respect them immensely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
say what
Tumblr media
omg yes yes yes yes yes yes lemme see it what is it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
STAR SOCIAL LINK: GET. THE STAR IS SO FUCKING GOOD FOR TEDDIE TOO! The Star comes after darkness has fallen and you are lost in the night with no sense of direction. It is the pinprick of light in the distance, the hope that gets your feet moving again after the despair has settled in. It is not a promise of warm or answers or completion, but it is sign that the story is not over, that you aren't over, and encourages you to follow to the next page.
TEDDIE IS GREAT FOR THE STAR, AAAAAAH!!!!!

I just wanted to type about these Katsuhiro Otomo comics I've been reading lately, while I watch my Dodgers game. Dodgers are up 2-1 in the third. Sorry if this is long and a bit of a ramble-- this is all off the cuff and it's just typing not writing, so I'm not going to edit this down too much. Sorry; feel free to ignore; thanks.
It's been this collection of comics called Sayonara Nippon-- a scanlation of material that has never been brought over to the United States… and probably never will be considering, the contents.
More specifically, it was a short story from 1979 called "East of the Sun, West of the Moon", the five chapters of the Sayonara Nippon series-- Otomo's first multi-installment manga, and a 1979 manga called "Seija ga machi ni yattekuru" (which translates roughly to "When the Saints Come to Town"). And then finally, there's a comic called "The A Apartments Murder Case" which I think was a mistake to be included in the collection, but. I think a lot of this was collected in the untranslated 4th volume of the Complete Works. (I think there was talk of bringing the Complete Works over 3-4 years ago but I don't know what happened…?).
1.
Tumblr media
East of the Sun, West of the Moon is cute but not really a big comic for me (though I sure like a drunk panel). It's about a rock band who hang out at a bar, and their relationship with the old lady that run the bar.
It's almost Otomo in the sort of sentimental mode that Naoki Urasawa excels at-- except there's this one weird page where he's got the old lady rubbing one of her breasts when she's around by herself and then sneezing…?? Urasawa doesn't really have those scenes that I can remember.
It's not lacivious-- it kind of reminds me of the sex scene in Juzo Itami's The Funeral, though I don't know if you saw that movie (I don't dig that one, not like Tampopo). My suspicion is it's in a vein of body humor that meant more to a Japanese audience and needs a little contextualizing for me, though perhaps that's, you know, me being dumb, me being the "in Japan, it's considered dishonorable to murder" meme guy; beats me.
I think Otomo's in his 20's for all of these comics, which is really what makes them interesting to me, that … if you know him as this Master comics guy from Akira, it's seeing that same guy except when he was a little bit of a punk. (In the "get the fuck outta my store, you fuckin' punk" sense of the word, not anything fancier or more meaningful than that.) But also an Otomo whose aim is radically different because he's not doing science fiction, and he just seems more purely focused on getting some kind of… you know, the breath of life in his comics.
(Like, Otomo obviously dug drawing tech shit later on for years and years in Akira but like, how did he see that evolution to science fiction? I don't know-- i've never read an interview with him that talks about that.)
I'd seen Otomo's short comics before and really, really liked them. But East of the Sun is not one of the ones that I found compelling-- it just feels a little safe…? Which isn't problem for the rest.
Because then you get to the Sayonara Nippon serial.
2.
Tumblr media
The 5-part serial is Otomo doing a comedy series, and supposedly after going to America to spend some time over here, according to the little bio blurb I read. It's him doing a comedy about what he saw in America. That was how the bio blurb I googled the other day described it...
But uhhhhh … man, what the fuck did Otomo see in America???
Okay, so like Sayonara Nippon-- it's a 1977 series about a Japanese guy (who I think is the lead singer of the rock band from the other story) going to live in 1970's Harlem, and opening a judo dojo there.
The Japanese guy's doing bumps of cocaine by chapter 3.
Tumblr media
Otomo is in his 20's, and it's like… seeing Otomo as an edgelord…?
Have you ever wanted to see Katsuhiro Otomo be an edgelord??
Otomo's drawing a lot of black people in the comic, but he's really in a snotty place with race in these comics. There's a funny-enough recurring bit in Sayonara Nippon and especially When the Saints where every Japanese character is terrified of black people past the point of absurdity. Which would be fun, except the black characters are all pretty vulgar, without any exception-- like, the Japanese characters aren't really presented as entirely wrong!
There's some black rapists and hookers and stuff in the second chapter of Sayonara Nippon, in particular, that I think might not be well received by modern audiences. But even When the Saints-- which I'm the most fond of-- there's an old black jazz band that are just old-men-in-manga levels of hony, which feels a way when the characters aren't Japanese, at least for me.
It's not great, in that respect, even if it's interesting seeing him draw African American characters or him trying to draw a culture clash comedy. I think Otomo's approach or thinking of what will mitigate the crassness is that if his main character is a Big Piece of Shit Too, Worse than Anybody Else, it gives him a lot of room to maneuver. So the main character is awful and almost every Japanese character who sees him is completely disgusted by him. And I guess I found that interesting because I think that was a popular way of thinking about comedy or how to approach "difficult topics" like race, etc. in a funny way back when these comics were made.
Fuck, I want to tell you about the final three panels of Sayonara Nippon so much but I probably shouldn't spoil that. It's this joke that DOES NOT LAND at all, but in such a … such a particular way, in terms of how this material has AGED BADLY… but that kind of underlined how there had been that shift in what people find funny. (I mean, it made me laugh but in a very particular "OH NO, OTOMO NO" kind of way. But a laugh is a laugh!)
But like, the moment with these comics where I went "OHHHHHHHH I GET IT, I GET WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE" is so blatant and so unsubtle and such an easy, easy "AHA moment"-- though he saves it for the very final chapter-- because it's…
Tumblr media
It's fucking Otomo shouting out your boy R. Crumb!!!
I don't know what the Japanese understood of Crumb-- but like, Otomo + Crumb isn't really something I've ever mixed together in my head before reading these comics and it's…
I mean, there's thornier avenues of that, about how the US obliviously exports its racism or other dumbfuckery overseas through cultural product, etc., that are way beyond the scope of me decompressing tonight but…
Yeah, it's very much a Rosetta stone image for me with these comics, and might be enough for you to guess-timate your own interest in this material.
There's a joke that I think is too far even for the scanlators where you can tell Otomo was doing a joke where his character says some racial slurs as part of the gag, and like…
Man, I don't think that their choice of the word "Negro" is a 100% true to what was intended in the panel.
3.
Tumblr media
People say "oh you can't make Blazing Saddles anymore" and they're all fucking morons, almost without fail. But at the same time, man, I don't think they can bring this comic over to the United States. I don't think that will happen…? Even though, you know… do I like it?
I mean, yeah! I'm not some YA person-- I just don't get too upset if something's a hot mess. The drawings are fucking crazy good, as you'd expect, and Otomo's pacing is just … he's doing 25 page episodic short stories mostly, and there's something really invigorating about seeing him work in that format. And he's… he's at a place in his artistic development where he's really aiming for a sort of … a very different target than his later comics. And there's just something about how he uses pages to get his characters to be alive-- this isn't hiim doing big, big imagery, and it's just that without the adornment of Toyko getting exploded. Like, it reorients you to what he's doing as a reader, to his strengths. (And you know, getting to think about "the evolution of what hip people thought was funny, 1977 to present" is kind of a good time to me, becase I'm fun that way).
I don't know if these are "good comics" exactly (the episode with the rapists is just generally a bad story, even after you set aside the "come on with this dumb shit, bro" factor-- it doesn't build to anything worth the trip). And they're perhaps "problematic" comics (I mean, not for life generally because you know, movies exist, but). But like… I think they are interesting comics. Or I'm just getting something out of them. You know: it's the greatest action comics guy doing these slice-of-life-ish 70's comedies?!? Like… that to me is very interesting.
4.
Tumblr media
Anyways: I'm running out of steam but the one that I'd actually say is worth checking out even if it's not ALL CLEAR on the racial side of things is When the Saints, a 76 page novella that they put next.
That one's got the rock band from the first story back in Japan and back in action together in the background, as sort of a comedic distraction from the main story, which is about an older record producer. The producer is visited in Japan by old friends-- three elderly members of a black Jazz band from New Orleans who have come to Japan to drink, scream for "geishas!!!" to be brougt to them, try to sex up ladies slightly off-panel, and otherwise have a good time. And it's about the producer assigning the job of looking after these guys to a younger guy. There's also a whole plot involving another artist the music company is cultivating, a young idol.
There's not a lot of POINT to the story that I could tell, but that one just kind of juggles so much at one time that it lets the story that is there kind of sneak up on the reader, I think. There's an emotion to it and while it's a sentimental one, I didn't think it felt as cloying about it as East of the Sun. And I think what was interesting is how…
Otomo just has it stop where it stops. There's a big happy ending that you think he's going to build to, but he doesn't bother-- he just finds a moment where he wants to bow out, and I think his choice of what that moment is really elevates what he's done more than anything. Instead of ending on some big Hollywood "They All Win … Because They Learned" ending, he ends it more on a character moment and it…
It really sells the comic, more than anything about it.
And on just a technical level, the way there are all of these minor characters throughout the comic, and every one has something to them-- like, that's definitely something he brings into Akira, right? If you think about all the characters in Akira. I don't know, that's the thing with all these comics, the phrase I keep thinking--
"Breath of Life."
Certainly part of it is how he draws because there's that sort of "realism" to his line-- not realism-realism, like some shitty American photo comic, but… you know… I mean, you know who Katsuhiro Otomo is, you already know what I'm talking about-- what, do you need me to describe the fucking taste of ice cream to you, too? You already know what I'm talking about! Fuck you!
But it's also just how they move through the comics, what he has them doing, their attitudes-- it's more than just his line.
I think there's something to that Saints comic worth seeking out. Do you think someone ever gets it here legitimately though? I mean, they've had 40+ years so they're not in any kind of fucking hurry! But. I liked all these comics, to varying degrees, but that's the one where I think maybe a person could benefit from taking a look at, if they're of the "let's study some comics" mindset.
5.
Tumblr media
(Oh and then there's the last story-- the band characters turn up for that one but that one's not interesting to me. Otomo's playing around visually on that one a lot-- distorting the figure, playing around with horror manga visual tropes-- but I just didn't respond to it. It's too much of a goof off for me. I ain't writing about that shit. Hire a priest.)
6.
youtube
You can see a bunch of photos of the collection over HERE. There's pages in there that I don't recognize so probably the collection included comics that weren't translated. But. Besides that, I don't know what you can do if you want to read these comics legitimately, unless you know how to read Japanese. So. But I'm out of stuff to say about them-- I just wanted to type. Okay. That's enough.
Anyways, Dodgers won. This is one of my favorite kinds of baseball games to see the Dodgers win-- a "We don't even have to win this game for purposes of the standings, etc., but on the other hand, fuck them" game.

Spider-Man Prompt 4 - The Spider in Spider-Man
Spider-Man acts way more like a spider than people think.
*I just love the idea of Spider-Man acting more spidery.
I can see him with all or some: fangs, venom, likes dark places, likes being on walls, real webs, spins webs, kills tiny animals, etc.
I've seen people make Peter friends with spiders, and that's cute and all, but I feel like it doesn't fit with spiders; they are loners. (20 out of 50,000 live in colonies) Peter was bitten by the Araneus Oscorpeus, which is a fictional species. I read somewhere that it is a genus of the orb-weaving spiders. They have venom and make "spiral wheel-shaped webs," so that can be what type of webs he is most likely to make, and these spiders are "beneficial to the ecosystem and help control insect populations." I feel like that fits so well into his character; maybe he not only wants to save people because of Ben but also because of his spider instincts.
*PS I got lots of that info from Google, so if it's wrong blame Google (even if it is wrong, this is fiction anything goes)
I see some people make Peter the same level as other spiders(to develop a connection or something?) They probably don't do it intentionally. It always felt wrong to me; I don't like it(but if I want to read a cute story of Peter being friends with spiders it's okay with me; I'll read it).
Spiders are predators, but they are so small that it isn't that important/scary to us; if you made them human-sized, that would be scary. I imagine it to be a lot like cats and pretty much any of the other feline species. I would pet a cat and want to pet a lion, but no way in hell am I going to even get close to a lion.
So I would like to imagine that any living thing that is smaller than Peter gets an instinctual sense of danger when he is really hungry or fighting someone like Spider-Man. Even humans because spiders have eaten other spiders, so maybe anything smaller or equal in size to him.
Ok so anyway, I saw somewhere that if a forest suddenly goes quiet it means a predator is around, so if Peter goes in one the same thing happens. I would like to think that he is banned from going on any stealth missions that have lots of wildlife; not because he is bad at stealth, quite the opposite in fact, but because it would be too obvious when suddenly all the bugs and birds stop making noise.
He would also have really good scary killing intent(based on scariness) so he is really scary when he is mad. If one day he is in a bad mode, which is rare for him, let's just say the bad guys will be in for a bad time(not because of the beating they will get but because of how scared they will be)
I encourage you to look at more things that spiders have/do so you can add it to Spider-Man's character.

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls- Season 2, Episode 22 (Last Episode of the Season). "I Can't Get Started" Part 2
Tumblr media
How about you don't and just say you did. I have a better idea, instead you can walk right off a pier.
Tumblr media
Ah, good old fashioned American politics. It’s a sad state of affairs to think that if he ran for office, Crusty would likely get elected in a landslide. Especially if you know all about this actor’s sketchy political and personal views (I am aware that he’s actually Canadian, but it matters not. He's trash). Lorelai invites Crusty to Sookie's rehearsal dinner, because having her parents at the wedding isn’t going to be hellish enough. Also I guess she’s trolling for some D after Dean abandoned her. Crusty will have to scratch (and cause) that itch.
Tumblr media
When I think of fun, I think of Dean and Crusty!
I’d like it made clear that they’re discussing a wedding rehearsal dinner and not the wedding itself. A rehearsal dinner is intended for the people…in the wedding party…to rehearse for the wedding. It’s not an open invitation for Crustyburgers who are trying to bang one of the bridesmaids. Lorelai just invited him without Sookie’s permission, claiming she'd be thrilled to have him there, which means a lot. You could invite some ruthless dictator to her wedding and Sookie would be all "Teehee, the more the merrier!" Dean also has no reason to be attending the rehearsal dinner of his girlfriend’s mother’s coworker. Anyway. Swell. They make their own rules in The Hollow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHEEE! I love a good minor inconsistency especially when they happen within the same episode! WHEEE! We know there won't be 1,000 people in attendance at that wedding. The population of Stars Hollow is like, 26.
Tumblr media
Uh oh. Lore's sloshed. That means she's nice and loose and vulnerable and Crusty is about to pounce. Gross.
Tumblr media
Crusty needs to "step outside for some air" and wants Lore to join him. Have you no shame?
Tumblr media
GAGGGG. You held in your vomit during Balcony Boinking, now try not to blow chunks at Wedding Reharsal Porch Porking (I assume. They seem to like porking in fresh air). Lorelai just can't put her finger on why Crusty is suddenly so nice and Around. Huh. I could never guess what he's after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Sherry had a big business trip planned and before she left we had a talk. We tried to come up with some answers. and couldn't think of anything so she left and we took time apart to think." Okay? The hell does that even mean? It's not supposed to make sense because it's all made up bullshit and he knows that Lorelai in her sloshed state isn't going to question it. Then bam, he's back in her pants once more. I guess seeing the turmoil brewing in his relationship, Crusty's solution was to take advantage of Lorelai and then knock Sherry up.
Tumblr media
Well, well, if it isn't the Nauseating Crusty-Boinking Lorelai Pot calling the Nauseating Crusty-Boinking Sherry Kettle black.
Tumblr media
Oh okay, so they're going to pork AT the wedding then?
Back at home the next day, Rory recieves a pitiful incoming call from Paris, who is having pre-election day jitters and decided the first person she should call was the one most near and dear to her heart. Her vice president. Her soul mate. I mean. Her running mate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was beautiful and gay I could cry.
Tumblr media
It just seems very off putting to present the news that your daughter's father and stepmother are breaking up to her in the same gleeful manner you'd reserve for something you read in a trashy tabloid. Like Sherry & Crusty are some celebrity couple of 2002, not your kid's shitty father and creepy girlfriend. I googled "Celebrity Couples that broke up in 2002" but got nothing. However, I found something more entertaining. Here ya go: 20 Celebrity Couples You Forgot Dated in 2002 "Guess who's in the process of breaking up?! Sandra Bullock & Ryan Gosling! I mean...your father and his girlfriend! Your shitty father can't keep a plant alive no less a relationship, isn't that amusing? Sure would suck if he reproduced a second time eh?" Two more Sherry Nuggets: Please watch the episode titled "It Should Have Been Lorelai" (or read my breakdown) if you forgot what a creepwad Sherry actually is. And what Lorelai once said about her:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Wow, but they were so...TOGETHER!" is the highest compliment you could give to one of Crusty's Crustacean-Ships. I mean relation-shits. I mean relationships. It sure sounds like Rory was rooting for you guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This kid is too smart for her own good.
Tumblr media
Oh my god, I LOVE this top. Michel has just worked 6 hours over time and is asking Lorelai nicely to let him clock out. She is not having it. Ya'll, I've got three numbers on speed dial during this episode: Some kind of medical board in Connecticut for the grave HIPAA violations going on in that orthopedist's office, the fire marshal for the supposed 1,000 people attending this wedding, and the Connecticut Labor Board to look into Lorelai Gilmore and what the hell is going on over at the Independence Inn.
Tumblr media
Proper response to this managerial dictator/HR Nightmare. You better pay my boy Michel his due overtime, Miss Leaves Work To Pick Out Coffins for Diner Guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SOCIAL DISTANCING!!!! LEAVE ROOM FOR JESUS!!!! I'm quite concerned how she's about to swap spit with Crusty and she has not questioned this Sherry breakup bullshit that he fed her less than 24 hours ago... like...at all. Whatsoever.
Tumblr media
Mmm, Welp. That's just about enough of these Gilmore Freaks for one day.

💕, 🥳, 💡, 🔮
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Of the fics I consider Finished, I'm shouting out Making the Most of It. REALLY happy with how that came out :)
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?
I think I was in 3rd grade, maybe 2nd- I typed "Digimon Stories" into Google and was delighted to find stories about my favorite show. I was so little I didn't totally understand how to navigate websites, and thought you just got 20 random stories every day, so you can imagine my :D when I discovered the "next" button and how to use the search feature lol. I don't remember my first fic exactly, but I wrote it after the movie came out and it was some insane Digimon crack fic lol.
I just really wanted to make up my own stories about my favorite stories, and I've always had an affection for plucky guys I felt got done wrong by fandom and wanted to do better to make people understand why I loved them so much- I wrote fanfic about Davis from Digimon and Boromir from LOTR. The only fic I left up on FFnet was an HP fic that I might port over to AO3 and revise, and maybe finish or at least add authors notes of my outline, because I do mostly like what I had, but for Obvious Reasons have not been super motivated to write for that fandom in recent years lol.
💡How many WIPs do you currently have?
Oooh okay, a lot of things in the hopper, let me categorize:
Actively Working On
Truly unhinged Hawnk fic for kinktober kfkfkfk
The Courage To Be
Star Wars fic 'Resolute'
Actively Pondering/Nibbling On
CharHawk Fake Dating
HouliHawk role play fail
Two age play fics that are similar in tone, one CharHawk and one Hawkahy- not sure if either will get finished, but don't think I'll write both, so pondering options
Hawkeye "turns into a cat" gen fic
Hawkeye Goes To California and BJ Goes To Maine at the same time without telling the other and swap lives for about two weeks.
Two post-war fics, one that is a sequel to Making the Most of It and one that's more focused on Daniel and Hawkeye's relationship, although BJ and Trapper are both there. Pretty distinct, but with enough overlap I need to pick one to prioritize to make sure I don't write too similar of scenes between them.
Soft Hibernation
The next part of my Rescue Bots fic- I know what the next bit will be, touched the doc last month, but not actively working on it
Under the Banner of Heaven case fic/undercover in a gay bar fic. Haven't worked on this in a few months, but I still really like the idea
Hibernation
X-Men Band AU. Been over a year since I worked on it, although I have a pretty good outline for a lot of what needs writing
1920s X Men AU. Soft abandoned, I remember some of my ideas for this but don't think I'll write it.
Succession KenStewy fic. I have some scenes and an outline, but it's hard to get in these assholes (affectionate) POV...
Captain America Clone Fic I haven't touched in almost a decade now god help me. Functionally abandoned but I still think on it occasionally kgkdjdkd.
🔮 Any advice for writers working through burnout or writer’s block?
Keep pondering, keep nibbling, and don't be afraid to shelve an idea and come back to it later. Fanfic is supposed to be for fun after all lfkdjjd
I have found it helpful to make the world's worst outline to act as a kind of checklist document and help connect scenes of I get stuck at one point and need to skip ahead a little.
I also like to try and focus on an emotional vibe to carry the fic, which helps get in the characters head so I can get in that trance state where the little guys are Doing Things and I just have to write it down kfjdjf. Sometimes I have an idea I like but it takes some pondering to find an emotional angle to connect with the character that makes sense as to why they are Doing The Plot, so nailing that angle before I commit to writing helps...
If I start getting bogged down in research I do the "five link" rule, where I only let myself read five things about the topic, try and cobble together enough of an explanation to pass a sniff test, then move on kgkrkrkdj
Also with skipping, the Sticking Point comes when I get too far ahead and then lose motivation for the part I was writing. Trying desperately to avoid this with my two multi-parters rn jdkdjd. Only letting myself write one or two scenes ahead helps a little...

hello there! 💜💚 i hope you're well and have enough time for tea, baths and all the other lovely self-care stuff 💚💜
i would like to ask you a question... i feel a bit dumb asking this but... what are the different types of fanfics? like- i know what fluff, angst and smut is. and i know what's an AU, and more or less the concept of omegaverse (i think...)
but when is a ficlet a ficlet? or a oneshot a oneshot? what is a 221b? a drabble? idk if there are more but i guess i just don't really understand the differences between the lengths of them? does this make sense..?
i've been confused about this for a while and can't quite figure it out. if you'd help out i'd very much appreciate it!
ps: please don't be too judgy about me not knowing this *hides*
Hey Nonny!
AWW thanks!! I love tea, baths and lots of self-care, just very bad at giving any of it to myself, haha!
And NONNY, please know that there are NO judgements here at all! PLEASE don't feel bad!! Fandom isn't something you magically know overnight! <3 And it's always okay to ask! <3
Before I answer your question, I highly recommend you peruse the Fanlore Wiki; it's a good place for new people to learn about fandom terms and history, so check it out if you need further clarification, as my answers are based on my understanding of each of the things you're asking about from being in TOO many fandoms for TOO many years, LOL.
I'm not going to go into everything, since fandom is SO huge and there's so much about it that I can't cover it all, hence the link to Fanlore, so here are immediate answers to some of your questions:
Drabble: A fic that's exactly 100 words
A 221b Ficlet: A fanfiction exclusive to the multiple variants of Holmesian fandoms that's exactly 221 words long, and the VERY last word of the fic starts with "b".
Ficlet: A short story, usually under 1,000 words but can be a little more.
Oneshot / vignette: A short, single chapter "scene" fic, essentially a story covering a missing scene or an out-of-context situation. In a similar vein, there's Two-Shots, which is basically a oneshot but from two different perspectives (ie. First chapter is situation from character A's POV, and Chapter 2 is from Character B's situation).
Podfic: An audiobook of a fanfiction. If you prefer to listen to stories, rather than read them, there are a tonne of amazing podficcers recording stories in multiple fandoms.
Five and One (and variations of): A story that depicts "Five times that Character [verb] [insert situation here] and one time [insert contradicting situation here]". It's basically 6 one-shots in a single story that has the last "one time" situation be a feel-good FINALLY ending. Some authors split them up into single chapters per situation, and others write the whole story as a single chapter.
Meta / Metafic: An essay or story based on analysing a piece of media. The Fic version expands upon a theory within a given fandom so that the theory fits into the narrative of the show.
WIP: Acronym for "Work In Progress", which is an unfinished published story. Some authors "write as they post" while others finish multiple chapters prior to posting them, but only post chapters one at a time on a scheduled basis, which keeps people coming back to the story until the end. The latter USUALLY guarantees a full-story inevitably being posted, so it is the more preferred type of WIP.
Short Story: a story under about 10,000 words
Novella: a story between 20 and 50K words
Novel: Anything over 50K words. I think past a certain number (100K?) it becomes an Epic, but I'm not 100 on it. Google says it's a story that spans multiple "books" and time periods, so I'm not sure.
Hope that helps a little bit, Nonny, and PLEASE don't hesitate to ask if you come across some other terms you would like to know from a fandom-old's perspective! We love helping y'all out! <3 NEVER feel dumb, please. There's no shame in asking for help. And if someone made you feel dumb because of it, FUCK 'EM.
