But, after 7 months of hard work, in September, I finally finished my Hungarian coronation/Wenn ich tanzen will dress from Elisabeth das musical. The dress has a historically accurate 1860's elliptical hoopskirt, the skit is made of 6 m of bridal satin and the skirt overlay and apron feature over 2000 individually sewn on sequins that took a month to complete

Bit late to share my Nanny Astoreth cosplay, but here we go! More info under the cut.

To all the folks who attended the Talent show and/or submitted: loved seing your creations! Can't wait for a next year!❤

The main part of the cosplay- the coat, was made by me. From black wool, satin and burgundy nylon lining. I sewed by machine and by hand. The pattern is roughly 1890s. I wanted to make a coat that is also wearable for a normal day, not only a cosplay. (It will have it's premiere in about a week when I go to see very good production of Hamlet in the theatre.)

I always wanted to have a coat like this, so I added a little Nanny Astoreth magic to the mix and made one of my dreams come true.

Edit: I was asked about some sewing info, so there you go! Warning: I'm not a seamstress, I start and complete my sewing projects only by the inaffable audacity I posses, usually by the method of trial and error. So if you're a seamstress, please don't execute me or burn me at the stake for this, please.

The pattern is from Black Snail Patterns, it's their Victorain 1890s coat. I made few alterations: I combined the two patterns you get (with the skirt or peplum). I picked sleeves from the peplum variation but kept the skirt. (More about the skirt later.)

I made no mock up. That's it, you can crucify me. I just went for it and hoped for the best. Probably don't do that.

This was my "first" in many ways: first time using pattern with included seam allowance, first time working with interfacing, first time doing an overcoat. There were some easy part and some hard ones. I won't go over the whole process, just share a few tips I found helpfull.

Here's the whole coat with the inside. (Colours are a bit brighter then in real life, I had quite a different lighting. It also isn't so shiny.)

Before I even started sewing, I ironed in interfacing. This makes the coat stiff and strong. (I sadly have no pictures.) The pattern will tell, where to do that. I used baking sheet, so it wouldn't stick to the iron.

To ensure I have the bodice pieces all lined up, I marked the waist-line by thread. Chalupa wouldn't hold and thread made it so easy to work with the pieces. Over all, sewing the bodice together wasn't a problem, but here comes the hard part...

The satin lapels. I had a breakdown over these. I'm not kidding. First, I just sewed them in, and to make them all nice and smooth I ironed them to the ineterfacing on the wool outer layer. That turned out to be a disaster. The seams were showing on the corners because there was more fabric. I had to carefully rip it apart and think of another solution.

I decided to iron in new Layer of interfacing, sticking just to the satin. This was achieved but putting baking sheet between the two fabrics, so it doesn't stick together. There are some photos of the interfacing pinned and not ironed and then when I ironed it. (It was honestly going back and forth, trying not to overheat and melt the fabric whilst making it stick. It took forewer.)

(As you can see, the collar is stitched on with red thread. That was just to hold it in place, I later handstitched it with black one. I used the same "two interfacings" method for the collar as on the lapels. You can also see a tiny bit of the interfacing in the upper left corner of the second photo.)

Sewing and sewing in the lining wasn't much of a trouble. The sleeves took a while to figure out, but it was mainly my thread ripping while I gathered them.

The skirt was the easy part. I pinned it on and tried it, saw the waist was too low and made my proportions weird. I just moved it up and trimmed the rest of the fabric. Here you can see how the inner seam is done. It was pretty easy.

About the additional stuff - buttons, buttonholes and the buckle and belt. Buttons were made by me. I wanted them to match, so I bought a little box for making custom fabric buttons. Easy and fun! Buttonholes were supposed to be easy. First two were. The third was a disaster. What can I say? Check your foot and settings. You don't want to be undoing that. I bought the buckle in the shop, sewed the belt. The wholes for the buckle were done by sewing tiny buttonholes. I did the same for the prog of the buckle. Worked surpridingly well.

That's probably all the tios I have.

Last but not least, I have a tiny fun detail. I embroidered a little star for the starmaker! And I love it dearly!

The Doylist Argument for Crowley Being An Important Angel (Pre-Fall)

So I just read a great essay on all the arguments for why Crowley is Raphael by @cyan-cirby and rather than subjecting them to attaching my long-winded additions directly onto their post, figured I'd make my own.

(As a quick aside, I do think Crowley was probably Raphael specifically. It's just too big of an omission of archangels that People Have Actually Heard Of to include Gabriel and Michael, and then jump to lesser known archangel names like Uriel, then totally obscure names like Sandalphon while skipping Raphael, a goddamn Ninja Turtle of well-known archangel names. And I don't think Crowley was Lucifer because Satan is already a character and Neil point-blank said Satan and Lucifer are the same person, otherwise it's too confusing (never mind other evidence like that Crowley referred to Lucifer in the 3rd person in S1, but I digress).)

Anyway! There's plenty of fantastic essays like the one I shared above that go into the fresh new Season 2 evidence for why Crowley was Raphael or at the very least important and high-ranked before he Fell. But I'm a fresh (and still primarily) denizen of the other Neil Gaiman Recent TV Show Adaptation of The Sandman so I want to delve into why Crowley was An Important Angel because that's just how Gaiman writes.

- Crowley is the more Gaiman-y of the two characters and Aziraphale the more Pratchett-y. I’m not making this up from nothing, Pratchett and Gaiman have taken photos and done promotions for the Good Omens book where they modeled themselves that way and basically cosplayed those characters respectively.

- I'm a Pratchett Super Fan first and foremost and can say with some authority that Pratchett tends to write Normal People. Even his Special People are Normal People who have to put their socks on one at a time in the morning. However, his Normal People do Special Things. That's the point. He truly believes, deep down in his bones, in equality and it shows in his portrayal of his protagonists as normal people who rise to an extraordinary occasion.

-Aziraphale is Pratchett's angel in Good Omens and it follows from that that Aziraphale is a Normal Angel doing extraordinary things (defying Heaven’s will to save the world). It aligns with Pratchett's general writerly sensibilities that his angel who saves the world is just a normal low-ranked angel, nothing special by birth, who is fussy and imperfect but nevertheless rises to the challenge to do incredible things in a comedic way. That's how Pratchett's protagonists work.

- Gaiman writes Special People. Dream/Morpheus and the other Endless are born Special People. Rose in Sandman learns she is born Special. Shadow in American Gods learns he was born Special.

- Gaiman very often writes about protagonists who are mythological and/or magical and thus who are super powerful by birth. They are generally only limited either by their own emotional immaturity or by Cosmic Rules.

-Gaiman has also, on more than one occasion, inserted a character who rather resembles him and mirrors his sartorial choices of wearing all black into the story as a protagonist and then made them a Cool Character. Not a criticism, just sayin’, Dream/Morpheus and Crowley come from the same era in his career.

My point is, Crowley is the Gaiman character so, in my opinion, especially when you combine this hunch with the new lore additions in S2, there are some past authorial choices and sensibilities that lead me to believe that with sole creative control of Crowley’s arc and character background, as well Pratchett’s tacit collaborator blessing since this is Gaiman’s Character, we’re going to see a default to old habits and a continuation of this trend because authors are people and they tend to have their way of doing things.

Which is why I think we're going to learn that Crowley Is Special By Birth (being an archangel), super overpowered (like Dream), and only limited in achieving what he wants by Cosmic Rules and being emotionally stunted.

My Dress Up Darling ch107

*KICKS DOWN DOOR IN ABSOLUTE GLEE* I know I haven't rambled on about any other chapter previously despite following the manga for a handful of months but NOW I MUST! "But why now so suddenly?" Because confessions actually happened baby, that's why! To heck with putting spoiler warnings; we all wanted this to happen anyway! I honestly just wasn't expecting it to happen now of all times, especially after Marin stated in the previous chapter that she wasn't going to ask Gojo for help anymore.

Poor Gojo, zooming all the way over to her place worried because she wasn't answering his texts back and he's met with something he probably never imagined hearing. Sure, things have been a bit awkward between them ever since the Haniel cosplay at Comiket, but they still managed to have lunch at home with grandpa and Marin's dad and even visited a hina doll festival together. I'm not certain how many days it's been since Comiket, but it's no wonder Gojo is thrown off a little despite how distant they were at school too. We, of course, know where this sudden change is coming from on Marin's end though.

The mood shifted between them after she noticed how quiet Gojo seemed after the Haniel photoshoot and while she had every intention to ask him what's wrong during their hina festival trip, she held back and put on a fake smile just to try and enjoy a normal day together. The need to fix whatever gap that's forming in their friendship slips further away after Gojo admits to his cousin in ch104 that he hasn't been able to practice making hina dolls as much recently, which is true due to how determined he was as creating the perfect Haniel costume (& every costume that came before it really), but the truth hits Marin harder since Gojo had just mentioned previously on their way to the showroom in ch103 that he wants to show all his progress and achieve his dream of becoming a kashirashi while his grandpa is still alive. Understandable how that admission leaves her speechless and causes Marin to feel some guilt starting to eat away at her, since I'm certain she would feel absolute horrible if her requests got in the way of Gojo feeling that heartfelt praise from someone he admires so much. Hell, she even excused herself from the showroom with a lame excuse just for us to see her at the end of ch104 breaking down and crying at home.

Marin believes she's been a burden to him and interfering with his progress, now wishing that Gojo called her out on it earlier and while I'm very pleased he denies straight away that he never viewed her in such a way, I'm also so relieved that he manages to figure out exactly why she might be suddenly looking down on herself.

He then brings up his grandpa's advice about how doing all kinds of stuff can come in handy one day and improve his skills with hina dolls, which was confirmed by the sweet old man himself when he commented Gojo was improving his line work after doing Marin's makeup (ep7/ch18). Marin does indeed know this because after hearing about how closed off Gojo was during his childhood, she suggested the two of them should experience all kinds of places and activities during their summer vacation, to which Gojo happily agrees with that day at the beach.

He reiterates that choosing to create all of Marin's costumes was solely because he wanted to, not because she forced him into it (which further supports how dearly he listens to her advice from ep1/ch1 about not letting anyone use you for their own personal gain). Branching out really changed him for the better too. Not only is he learning more and more about clothing and designing but he's also making new friends and cherished memories through all these months spent with Marin which is something our once lonely boy desperately needed in his life.

And I appreciate that he expresses his thanks to her since it's usually her that's showering him with praise after ever perfect costume he spends countless hours making for her. I will admit that I wasn't expecting her to.. snap back quite like this though.

Of course I remember how desperately she wanted to know what's going on in his mind after Comiket, but to see her get ticked off like this? Damn. I mean, it isn't uncommon, as we've at least seen her tell off creeps before in both anime (ep1) and later manga chapters (only example I can remember atm is ch77), but to Gojo? Oh boy. It's not just him she's acting strange to either, as she wasn't nearly as lively and carefree as she normally seems around her other friends too when they went out for karaoke, so it's safe to say that this new distance between her and Gojo really put her mind in a bad place. Going from being incredible close friends to barely speaking a couple words is bound to throw anyone through a loop.

I'm not saying her shouting is a bad thing either. One of the first things she ever tells Gojo (ep1/ch1) is to not hide his feelings and speak up about them to others, so I can understand how she can be a bit annoyed with how closed off he's been for however many days it's been since Comiket. It can hurt even more considering how they became such great friends since the series started however many months ago too. He has the chance to explain himself, but cuts himself off and the silence becomes too much for her to handle, leading her to dismissing him.

It's not like Gojo doesn't have an answer for his recent behavior; he does, but he's purposefully holding back to avoid making a real big mistake which is saying something you know you'll regret.

I'm glad I actually went back a couple days prior to this chapter dropping to read the last 10ish chapters on a whim because I feel like I understand this big, internal battle Gojo has going on in his mind right now a bit better. I believe Gojo thinks of Usami first (the fabric store clerk who actually wasn't in the anime for some reason?) because Gojo is leaning towards the idea of remaining quiet as to not upset Marin, but then remembers the story Usami told him back in ch105 about how he originally wanted to design clothing but chose a different career path in order to please his father. While Usami does eventually follow his dream and switches jobs thanks to his wife's kind words, he tells Gojo his biggest regret was not being able to tell his father how he really felt back then. I'm sure this is what gets Gojo to consider telling Marin the truth about why he's been acting so quiet lately, but then remembers Nobara (the girl we saw from his first flashback at the very start of the series) and how harsh her words to him were back when they were both kids. We know how deeply those words affected Gojo all these years but also learn in ch106 that Nobara herself has been regretting that moment ever since as well. Fair to say that small snippet of life ate away at both of them in different ways, which is what leads into the memory about Marin from ep1/ch1 about being true to your own feelings and how keeping them to yourself will only hurt you.

So, despite us readers seeing in big, bold text how Gojo's repeatedly telling himself to keep his mouth shut in order to preserve whatever kind of friendship he and Marin have left, the flashbacks allow him to think a bit more clearly and push him enough to finally reveal why he's been acting so strange since the Haniel cosplay: our boy was jealous. And it's not a recent realization either. He's harbored such feelings for quite some time, at least since watching Marin model for her job (ch50) and from watching her slay in the Rei cosplay during the school festival (ch62). He just suddenly has a name for his mood.

I can't say I totally blame the kid. Having so many strangers admire a friend of yours in such a would no doubt instill some protective/jealousy vibes, especially if you really care for said friend a decent amount. Same kinda feelings if someone was ogling your bf/gf/partner, ya know? The whole "make me your prisoner" line is from ch96 and was indeed a request from Gojo to Marin for the Haniel cosplay. From what I remember, the creator of the fictional 'Mandate of Heaven' series is very hard to please and any adaptations of his work could never meet his high standards. I can't recall if there's a serious reason behind it or not, but Gojo took it as a personal challenge to create the perfect cosplay, but it could only be done with Marin's help by really showcasing an uncaring attitude and emotionless smile that would cause everyone to fall for her anyway. And oh boy, does our girl nail it. A bit too effective in Gojo's case too.

The "I wanted it to stop" and Gojo admitting himself as selfish does bring up the offer Marin received in ch100 to my mind. Basically, a lady from some fancy agency gave Marin her card and told our girl to get in touch with her if she wanted to cosplay full time. I honestly don't remember if Marin had ever mentioned that she wanted to go professional or if she ever believed she could reach such a level, as this seems to just be a hobby she finds joy in, but with such an offer now on the table, I wonder how that idea will play out now that we're all aware of Gojo's jealousy. Seeing Marin draw a crowd during the school festival and at Comiket seemed a bit irritating enough for our boy, so imagine how he might feel when Marin's influence reaches an even larger audience. I highly doubt Gojo would ever actually tell Marin to stop cosplaying just to spare him of feeling jealous though, and I don't think she would consider stopping herself either. If anything, she was about to tell him about it, until a phone call from Gojo's cousin interrupted their conversation, but perhaps this could still be discussed next chapter or sometime in the future.

Anyways, Gojo admitting his jealousy is one thing, but he's too good of a boy to tell Marin to stop cosplaying. I can't imagine all the cosplaying would end either since that is quite literally the main idea for the series. It also wouldn't feel right for him to continue to pursue his dream working with hina dolls if she can't go out to enjoy her passions either. All that aside, he's too busy figuring out why in the world he's feeling jealous in the first place.

I WISH I could remember exactly which chapters all these Marin flashbacks belonged to but for the life of me, I simply can not. I just skimmed through the entirety of it and quite possibly too quickly to find them all, so I apologize. That being said, I was certain the first one was from the first chapter when Gojo first showed Marin the hina doll inside the sewing room at school, but that panel isn't anywhere there, so I'm mistaken. I fall short with locating the second panel as well, since it doesn't give me any clue on what outfit she might have on like the others do. The third however! That's from ch61! Right as Gojo is getting ready to do her makeup for the Rei cosplay during the school festival. Their whole class is crowded around Gojo to watch him work his magic, unknowingly adding to the pressure he feels, when Marin notices his nerves and simply asks if he's okay. The fourth flashback is from ch89, when they're out shopping for supplies for the Haniel cosplay. Gojo is taking his sweet time browsing through all the fabrics, making sure he finds the best choice when Marin suggests she goes off and gets a head start at looking at other stuff they'll need to buy. She tells him to leave this part to her and that "cosplay is a two person affair, right?" So, two outta four ain't bad I think, but I do wish I had context for the first two flashbacks considering the next panel is just..

THIS. Our precious boy actually saying those wonderful three words! Sure, he's told her how beautiful she was during ep5/ch14 (though he was falling asleep on the train) and sorta offhandedly admits that Marin can be cute during his conversation with Shinju in ep9/ch28, but THIS is to her face! Out loud! With purpose and feeling! I honestly wasn't expecting him to openly confess first like this, especially with how much time we've spent in Marin's head as she wasn't shy at all with her thoughts and fantasies to us readers, but whatever! It's real and happening!

Dude feels so ashamed of himself for no reason. Okay, I know there's reasons, as we've just spent how long going through all his buried emotions to understand what he's been feeling for the past however many weeks or months it's been since he first had these feelings, but I can't be too bothered by it all since that grab of his scarf has captured all my attention.

YEESSSS SWEETIE! Get your man! No hesitation! No teasing cheek kiss to a big bunny costume he's wearing to a Halloween party like during ch48 either! Thank fuck! Damn, I'm gonna go crazy whenever this entire chapter get animated.

Ohhh it feels so long since she first admitted her love to him over the phone in ep12/ch39 to an already dead asleep Gojo, but girlie does not waste a single second to spill her feelings out for him to actually hear loud and clear this time!

Absolutely love how any and all tension that was looming over these two kids the past couple chapters effectively vanishes in an instant when Marin switches right back to her usual cheerful self. The big sparkles in her eyes and even the heart backgrounds in her excited text bubbles are too precious!

Pfftt, his completely blank face. Someone save our boy for he has no idea what he just got himself into.

I appreciate that Marin isn't mad about Gojo being jealous, since he was so worried that it could've ended their friendship, but I do hope they can both work to lessen their slight jealous tendencies since their feelings are now out in the open and mutual. I don't think the jealousy is gonna be a complete serious issue between them, but Marin has brief moments. The only moment that comes to mind however is when she finds out Gojo asked Shinju to come over to his place to work on her cosplay (ep10/ch30), but I can chalk that one up for laughs more than anything. With Gojo, I dunno. I'm certain Marin will tell him not to worry about anyone else and perhaps how she's only interested in him, or something along those lines.

Our boy has not moved an inch throughout Marin's adorable love ramble. Gojo is truly stun-locked.

And let's goooo, we even get another kiss! As high on cloud nine as I am for these two.. Marin, honey, you gotta slow down! Gojo is so overwhelmed by all this right now, he's practically shaking! Whether it's because she also confessed or because.. well, she's still laying right on top of him like this. Our boy needs a moment to relax!

Sweet lord.. I'm so thrilled for them. The confession was so worth the wait and done real well in my opinion if my endless chatter wasn't proof of that enough. I haven't a clue on what will happen next chapter, but for Gojo's sanity, I pray that Marin's dad does not walk through that front door. Other than that, I think Marin will eventually bring up the professional cosplay offer she received and ask for Gojo's opinion. I have a feeling she might discard it so their cosplay duo can continue just like it does now, but I can also see how Gojo might make her reconsider, like if he's gonna continue with his hina doll goals then she should have a grand dream of her own too. The whole jealousy thing might be talked out a little bit more, but maybe it's just solved for comedic purposes. I dunno, but we shall see.

So yeah. I've fangirled enough over these two cute kids. For now. Who knows if I continue these ramblings for upcoming chapters or not. It certainly wouldn't be first time I planned to chat about just one chapter and ended up writing out several more for a series. It's quite possible.

Samhain: Agere edition!!

For those of you that don’t know Samhain (pronounced “sow-win”) is a pagan religious festival taking place October 31st-November 1st. This Celtic tradition acted as a celebration to welcome in the harvest and “the dark half of the year”. This time of year is significant because many believe that the veil between the spiritual and physical world is thinning and therefore creating more paranormal or supernatural occurrences.

Originally fire was used as a community after harvest for the participants to take home and light the hearth. It was also belief that celts would dress as the “monsters” of their time in an attempt to prevent fairies from kidnapping them when the veil was thinned. During the Middle Ages people turned towards more personal fires and used carved turnips known as jack-o-lanterns which Irish tradition later switched out with pumpkins.

“Dumb Supper” was another practice during in which a feast would be set up for the ancestors the celts were expecting to cross from the other side and then be used by the physical people after the spiritual had their fill.

Samhain is one of my favorite sabbaths to celebrate because it is during the time of year at which I feel most connected with my spirituality. I love to combine agere with these types of things as a way to bring together two different parts of myself that I chose.

List of things I do from Mabon(autumn equinox) to October 30th:

- Color magick: rearrange my wardrobe and current makeup styles to simpler and muted pieces as a way to slow down and focus on nature and the items I use

- Watch moon phases: keep an eye out for the phases of the moon during this time of year, this is because I feel more connected to the moon specifically and begin to write letters to her(the moon) as a way to manifest her energy and change with the seasons. This also allows for more rituals to be done during this time including lots of energy cleaning (I stay inside most days and I don’t want things to feel stagnant)

- Journal: journal all dreams, signs, numbers, or deck spreads that you happen to come across and stick with you. Intuition is very important during this step but don’t be scared and overthink things. Trust yourself so the self trusts you.

- Shopping!!: This one may not be seen as magickal as the others but for me it plays a big part in setting my energy for my space and my mental. This includes things like candles, blankets, books, incense, certain herbs, and even a new deck. I’ve also found that I tend to buy new jewelry before every season that sets myself up for the energy required to be attached spiritually so that may be a good subtle way to achieve this connection if you’re still in the broom closet.

During Samhain Activities:

- first things first is have my costume ready. I prefer to go by a more closet cosplay like take on my outfits so I can wear them for the entire day without any strange looks or restrictions. This is just a way for me to enjoy myself and also view it as a way of protection.

- Act as usual: seriously, I don’t spend all day thinking about the sabbath. I know a lot of witches may have a full day to celebrate but unfortunately I know a few who definitely don’t and I don’t want it to seem like you have to be dedicating all your time to it to be celebrating correctly. Spend time with your friends. Listen to loud rave music. Do whatever makes you feel most comfortable during this time and be grateful that you made it to this part of the year. This is usually the time where my age regression joins the most: I spend most of the day coloring spooky Sanrio Sheets, watching kids Halloween episodes, and eating whatever I want. Many people view being a witch as being strict with sabbaths and having a certain aesthetic when doing so, I don’t follow this belief and I just allow my kid-self to have the Halloween he’s used to as a way to have nostalgia and think of the good times the year has offered me before this moment.

-Dumb Supper: My favorite was of celebrating is having a dumb supper, which can be even more special as a kitchen or hearth witch. I do this at my working altar currently because I'm still in the broom closet but I still set up a simple dinner, light my ancestor candles, and do a few readings to listen to their advice. I am usually regressed during this because to me it feels like the one time of year I get to sit at the adult table and ask them questions and listen to their stories about their lives and all the things they learned they want to pass on to me.

-Lighting: I always use candles on this night and other light up items such as star projections to bring a child-like thing into the night of Samhain.

-Journaling: after doing all of this I sit in bed and read through my journal from the month before and make any editions or notes, also documenting all that happened that night

I write this post to explain the origin, traditions, and personal practice of Samhain and I hope many of you can learn that it’s ok to incorporate age regression into spiritual or “adult” practices <3 Happy Samhain and Halloween everyone!! Oshi No Ko Chapter 151 - My Thoughts/Analysis

It’s another setup chapter but we’re still in the beginning of a new arc so that’s to be expected. As always, spoilers for Oshi No Ko Ch 151 below.

The chapter starts with what I can only describe as the narrative glazing Kana’s acting skills. Aside from the fact that it shows that she’s recently premiered in that movie that Shima directed, it really isn’t necessary. The timeline of this manga has always been stuck in some nebulous mess of uncertainty for long enough that it could have been inserted anywhere within the last few chapters or so with ease.

Of course this entire montage of showing how good Kana’s acting ability actually is would ring a lot more true if she didn’t whore herself out to Shima in order to get a role. Much as I dislike how that entire situation went for Kana—and so much of that small mini arc in general—it undercuts Kana’s skills as an actor if her big break was because of Shima taking pity on Kana. Akane and Ruby were able to secure acting jobs without going to those lengths and were able to reach greater heights of popularity without it, so why can’t Kana achieve those same heights without couch casting?

Now that I think about it, I don’t think we’ve actually seen Kana get a role through her own efforts alone. The Sweet Today role was because Kaburagi was taking advantage of Kana in general as an actor; her role in Tokyo Blade was because he wanted to play both Kana and Akane off of each other, and even her role in the movie was because Kaburagi pulled some strings to get her on board. Even the intermission that focused on Kana and Akane basically reeked of industry nepotism, and I don’t need to reiterate what Kana was about to do to secure a role from Shima.

My thoughts on Kana’s acting ability aside, we settle on Kana and Aqua’s “date”. Kana wearing her old uniform even after she’s graduated is uh—a choice. That’s certainly some form of cosplay.

Aqua being surprised that this entire meeting is a date is—well. Kana I think if you want to actually make a play for Aqua you need to actually tell this shit to him beforehand. As far as he knows this is a casual outing with one of his friends. I expected her to do something a bit different when faced with the prospect of actually wooing Aqua, more specifically trying to actually take steps to woo him. Maybe I gave Kana too much credit. Akane’s manipulations aside, she hasn’t intentionally taken many steps to actually steer Aqua into considering her as a romantic partner in the series.

The baseball scene??? Now that’s a callback. I’m starting to see where Kana is heading with this whole mess. While Kana may look back at that time as a casual moment between two like minded people, it’s also the time where Aqua tried to vent some of his frustrations of his own Issues(™) and Kana quite easily rebuked them in favor of talking about romantic prospects. After that encounter, it doesn’t escape my gaze that Aqua hasn’t talked to Kana about his own Issues unless heavily pressed.

Oooooh future talk. Kind of hypocritical from the child actor that didn’t take steps to get into college to press people about their own future, but I don’t mean to pick at an old wound since it’s the equivalent of Kana making small talk. And Aqua’s thinking of applying to medical school??? We’d seen some similar implications go through his head during one of the interludes, but it’s nice to finally get some form of confirmation that he’s at least thought about a life after his revenge—even if he is just saying this to get Kana off his back.

Kana unintentionally dredging up Aqua’s trauma with her whole speech here. It’s a sight better than how she intentionally triggered him in Tokyo Blade, but I’m sure that doesn’t make Aqua feel much better. 

Aqua covering his face when confronted with Kana’s insight is cute, I gotta admit. The fact that it hides his star eyes in this panel here is also noteworthy. 

That dream came true when I was five years old. And Kana suffered through a dry spell in spite of it—or arguably because of it. Perhaps she can look at things with hindsight now that she’s managed to carve out a certain niche for herself in the industry but we know that Kana isn’t there just yet. Frill is a perfect example of what someone at the top of the industry looks like, and I don’t think anyone else in our cast aside from maybe Taiki is there just yet. One good movie and a small hint of stardom does not a national actress make. 

In fairness to Kana, her saying that she’s achieved her dream is a very in-character thing for her to do. Time and time again we’ve seen her immaturity and naivete undercut everything she sets out to achieve. Her inability to realize that she was being taken advantage of by Kaburagi in the earlier parts of the manga; the fact that she wasn’t able to remain professional with Aqua when he was avoiding her; her attempts to secure a role with Shima despite knowing his nature full well—the list goes on. If she really thinks that she’s become a national actress after tasting just a hint of success then that just plays into Kana’s faults even further.

I have a new dream now. I want to be the only person you look at. I couldn’t quite help but laugh as soon as Kana said this. Okay Kana, you want to be Aqua's idol? What have you done to actually achieve that? Because you have some gigantic shoes to fill in the form of Ai and Rubysarina. Her entire arc throughout the story has been towards actually being a successful actress, so this pivot leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t even like Kana as a character and I’m complaining that this entire interaction did her dirty! 

The fact that Aqua didn’t even catch Kana’s baseball when she’s said this has to be some of the most godawful hit you over the head symbolism I’ve even seen from the series. There are college writing students out there that wouldn’t pull stuff like this even if they were held up at gunpoint! You’d think that an actual published series like this would have editors that strike this shit down but apparently not.

It’s not because of the fact that this metaphor it’s simple that irks me as much as it does. It’s the fact that it’s so obvious that it basically spells out that Kana’s attempts at trying to become Aqua’s star are going to be flushed down the toilet. In terms of being an idol, Kana hasn’t done anything else to engender Aqua’s devotion. As Aqua’s friend, she’s certainly become an important aspect of his life, but not so much in terms of being an idol. She does not inspire or drive Aqua’s motivations in the way an idol should—at least in my opinion.

What a fucking chapter. I’m just glad there isn’t a break next week so we can quickly see how this mess is going to turn out. At this point I just want some goddamn consequences to happen to Kana so having her lose Aqua basically sitting on her hands for the entire series is some good fucking karma. Crying and bitching about one’s love life constantly is absolutely not the characteristic of someone going to win it all as the series reaches its endgame.

I was actually surprised that there was so much talk about Kana grabbing death flags in this chapter. I mean, really, it’s like everyone forgot that most of the main cast has contractual immortality until after the interviews. Even then, Kana really hasn’t been important enough to the story since Tokyo Blade to justify any purpose of her dying aside from shock value. Even if there was something like that planned out for the next few chapters, the tension is going to be undercut knowing that most of the main cast is going to survive without any issue.

Once again the elephant in the room has to be Ruby. It’s kind of difficult to root for Kana in this instance—even besides all the reasons I’d listed so far—because we still don’t know what Aqua thinks about the kiss in Chapter 143. Anything regarding romance is stuck in a pool of indecision since that chapter and it simultaneously undercuts everything the narrative is trying to even do with Kana and Akane’s efforts to woo Aqua while leaving the actual plot of the story on the wayside. I just hope that we’ll be getting a peek into Aqua’s head while we’re unfortunately saddled back in with this romance plotline.

I've started watching it and I'm on the third episode 😊. I really like it so far! I was spoiled by my friend but I don't mind spoilers tbh

So,

Komi is super popular for someone with severe socal anxiety. Both girls and boys are in love with her to the point that one of her classmates kidnaps her first friend and they find him in a closet. The girl has photos of her everywhere 💀 super creepy as hell tbh. She even eats a peice of her hair- 😭.

But in the first episode or the second, the main character says he'll help Komi complete her dream of having 100 friends despite her socal anxiety. And the main character realizes that Komi may come off as intimidating but she just has a very hard time communicating with people. She has these super cute hiccups 🥺 and she has almond shape eyes that are purple 😍 (she's hella pretty) in one of the episodes I watched, Najime (everyone in the animes childhood friend) sends her to get a drink from a cafe and she makes it there but because she's too nervous to talk, the barista(?) Gives her the wrong drink and she just takes it because she can't say it's the wrong order 😭. Then she starts tearing up when they take it out of the bag and it's the wrong one 💀 (the main character uses they/them pronouns for Najime so I'm doing the same lol)

Еп. Я пришла с ПЕРВОЙ полноценкой за долгое время, свежей и как всегда нарисовала себя. А вообще... Буду рада словам, любым словам по любому поводу, потому что я по вам сильно скучаю. Я почти уверена, что многие вообще забыли, что я существую и когда то рисовала, я понимаю, времена тяжёлые. Начало учебы как ни как , да и все лето я проводила в совершенно в другом месте/ хобби. Я даже почти забыла как рисовать.... Решила тряхнуть стариной и посмотреть что из этого выйдет, как видите, я еще, что то, да умею... А по правде говоря, я чувствовала разочарование по отношению к себе.

Когда я ушла в косплей, я не надеялась на что то, что буду выступать или что меня будут запоминать. Я делала то, что делала давно, но не решалась что то с этим делать, пока не случилось это лето. Я всегда думала, что буду только художником и достигну того, что достигла в косплее, но в рисовании. Но оказалось все совершенно иначе. Я лишь за это лето побывала на многих фестивалях и мероприятиях в первые, познакомилась со столькими людьми и даже провела свою первую сходку вместе с еще одним человеком. Я получила призовое место на двух фестивалях и меня в какой то степени любят и узнают. Я мечтала достигнуть того же в рисовании, изза чего разочаровалась в себе, как в художнике. Я потратила куда больше времени на это, а тут летом я сделала буквально все, что хотела сделать и теперь ставлю куда больше планку, но только в косплее. Знаю что долго не рисовала и сама пропала на долгое время, однако я честно чувствую вину и стыд, что о таком говорю, я хочу быть тем, кто внушает людям надежду, а не тот кто ее убивает. Однако, я не отказываюсь от своих слов что стану великим художником, по своему. Не отказываюсь и от своих целей и желаний тоже.... Но я хочу подумать сделать нечто другое, просто дайте мне время. Придумать другой план как этого добиться. Возможно, я делала что то не правильно, и мне надо это понять и сделать. Пускай эта осень будет сложна для меня ,но я не собираюсь сдаваться... Ep. I came with the FIRST full-fledged picture in a long time, fresh and, as always, painted myself. In general... I will be glad to hear any words, any words on any occasion, because I miss you very much. I'm almost sure that many people have completely forgotten about my existence and haven't really painted for a long time, I understand that times are hard. The beginning of my studies, no matter how, and I spent the whole summer in a completely different place/hobby. I've almost forgotten how to draw.... I decided to shake things up and see what happens, as you can see, I still know how to do something... And, to tell the truth, I was disappointed with myself.

When I started cosplaying, I didn't expect to perform or be remembered. I was doing what I had been doing for a long time, but I didn't dare to do anything until it happened in the summer. I always thought that I would only be an artist and achieve what I achieved in cosplay, but in drawing. But everything turned out to be completely different. Just this summer, I attended many festivals and events in the first place, met so many people and even had my first meeting with another person. I won a prize at two festivals, and to some extent I am loved and recognized. I dreamed of achieving the same thing in drawing, which made me disappointed in myself as an artist. I spent a lot more time on this, and then in the summer I did literally everything I wanted, and now I set the bar much higher, but only in cosplay. I know I haven't painted in a long time and I've been away for a long time, but I honestly feel guilty and ashamed for talking about it, I want to be the one who gives people hope, not the one who kills it. However, I do not renounce my words that I will become a great artist in my own way. I also don't give up on my goals and desires.... But I want to think about doing something else in drawing, just give me some time. Come up with another plan to achieve this goal. Maybe I was doing something wrong and I need to figure it out and do it. This fall may be difficult for me, but I'm not going to give up... With the onset of autumn. 🍂

Finally, at long last, Unlucky Morpheus, known affectionately as Ankimo, is set to release their new single, "Sekai Rinne." The title track will serve as the opening theme for the TV anime "なぜ僕の世界を誰も覚えていないのか？(Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?)" starting on July 13. While known for their heavy metal sound, Ankimo is also adept at incorporating high-quality pop sensibilities, and they've long aimed to create anime songs. Here we have the dramatic and dynamic Ankimo-style anime songs, complete!

— Unlucky Morpheus is releasing their first anime tie-up single, "Sekai Rinne," which will be the opening theme for the TV anime "Why Does Nobody Remember My World?" starting on July 13. Considering the flow from their first album as Unholy Orpheus, "What is DEATH?" released in May with its strong melodic death metal influence, this new development is very intriguing. Shiren, was this an intentional move on your part?

Shiren: Yes, it was. The "What is DEATH?" album released under Unholy Orpheus was originally planned to be released together with Unlucky Morpheus's album "evolution" (released in 2022) as counterpart albums. However, due to timing, "evolution" came out first. With this new tie-up, I see "What is DEATH?" as a good contrasting work to "Sekai Rinne." I hope fans enjoy the wide range of our music.

— As you mentioned, the title track "Sekai Rinne" of this single maintains the powerful sound typical of Ankimo, while also featuring standout melodies and catchy elements characteristic of anime songs. Ankimo has previously released pop-sensible tracks like "Amaryllis" (included in "evolution"), so this isn't entirely unprecedented.

Fuki: The "evolution" album we released before was driven by its vocals throughout. Among the tracks, "Amaryllis" had a particularly anime-song-like context, and I think it resonated with fans as a track that could easily fit into an anime, both in melody and vocal tone. In that sense, "Sekai Rinne" is simply a natural outcome of the melody and singing style the song called for. However, this is our first time creating an actual anime tie-up song as Ankimo, so this marks a turning point for the band. This single is likely to reach the largest audience we've ever had, making it very significant for us.

— Since we have the opportunity, I'd like to ask the instrumental members about their feelings when this tie-up was decided.

FUMIYA: For me, it felt like "finally, the time has come." Even though we call Ankimo a metal band, within the realm of metal, we do fairly understandable things, and I think we are a good introductory metal band. We've had anime song-like tracks like Amaryllis before, so honestly, I feel like "finally."

Ogawa: I think there were probably quite a few fans of Ankimo who thought it would be great if we did an anime song someday. Of course, we ourselves had thought so for a long time, but as an indie band, it's hard to come across such opportunities. So I feel like we've finally achieved one of our goals.

Jinya: In reality, getting a tie-up without belonging to an agency and working independently is uncommon, so I feel very grateful for this opportunity, which came about through various fortunate encounters and the efforts of those around us.

Jill: I also feel "finally...!" In all our activities so far, one of my two big dreams was to have my project be responsible for an anime opening. I've been involved in anime background music through recording work before, but having the chance to do an anime opening with my own band is very exciting. Plus, I personally love anime songs. I've posted "played with cosplay" videos of songs like "Gurenge" and "Homura" (both by LiSA) from "Demon Slayer" and "Guren no Yumiya" (Linked Horizon) from "Attack on Titan" on my YouTube channel. So in that sense, I'm very honored to be directly involved in the anime world this time.

— Since it's an anime OP theme, the length is fixed at 1 minute and 30 seconds, so I think you must have been mindful of the elements unique to tie-up songs during the composition process. Shiren, what points did you particularly consider this time?

Shiren: The most important thing in making an anime song is whether it fits "Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" I paid a lot of attention to how this song would resonate within the work. The primary focus was to create a song for this work, and then I thought about how to make it sound like Ankimo. 

Fuki: I also wanted to make a song that even people who don't know Ankimo would be intrigued by. And of course, I made sure to showcase the charm of vocalist Fuki.

Shiren: In terms of sound, we don't usually use digital synths that much in Ankimo. But this time, since "Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" features futuristic weapons and has a fantastical world view, I used digital synth sounds to express that feeling. Although, the fantastical world view is something Ankimo is inherently good at. Regardless, I always kept in mind that it was a song for the anime. The time signature also matches the anime's length.

— Could you explain a bit more about what you mean?

Shiren: In "Sekai Rinne," the B melody has an irregular time signature, with a mix of 7/4 and 4/4 time. It fit perfectly to match the song's length. At first, I tried to match it with regular 4/4 or 3/4 time, but it didn't feel quite right. Then I thought maybe an irregular time signature would fit, and it did. The unusual B melody would not have existed if the song length wasn't fixed for an anime (laughs).

— When creating the sound, was there anything you kept in mind considering it would be aired on TV?

FUMIYA: No, the sound is the same as usual. "Sekai Rinne" isn't an overly metallic song to begin with, so the drums aren't very prominent. But I included my individuality where needed, so in that sense, I approached it with the same balance as always.

Shiren: I think I'm the only one who considered how it would sound on TV. It was the first thing to think about as the composer. During the mixing stage, I also thought about how it would sound through TV speakers. The other members focused on how to enhance the demo I presented.

FUMIYA: Exactly. Shiren composed the song with an awareness of it being an anime song, so I just made sure not to deviate from that.

Ogawa: My stance was pretty much the same, and it felt similar to when we recorded Amaryllis. I didn't particularly worry about it being on TV or an anime song.

Shiren: Since we're making music in Japan, I think we all have some understanding of what anime songs are like. Even if we're not consciously aware, there's probably an unconscious imprint. That shared understanding naturally came through in this song.

Jinya: Shiren included all the necessary elements for an anime song in the track, so I focused on delivering excellent metal play true to Ankimo. I think the significance of Ankimo doing an anime song lies in that. Many can make metal-like anime songs, but only Ankimo can deliver our unique metal in an anime song. As a player, my approach didn't change. The only difference was when the mix came up, I suggested minor adjustments to better fit an anime opening.

— Earlier, Shiren mentioned using digital synths to represent the futuristic elements of "Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" Did this create any conflicts between the synth and the violin?

Jill: No, not at all (laughs). From the moment I heard the demo and saw the score, I understood what needed to be expressed in this song. I focused on playing phrases that would be easily received by listeners within the short duration of an anime song. That might have been a bit different from usual.

— Besides the sound creation process, I think the lyrics were also important for "Sekai Rinne." Did you receive any materials in advance from the other party?

Fuki: When we received this offer, I read the original light novel "Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" The novel was serialized from 2017 to 2020 and is currently being serialized as a manga. The anime adaptation was based on specific parts, so I bought and read the entire original work. The lyrics were written after fully understanding the story.

— After submitting the first draft of the lyrics, did you receive any additional orders or revisions from the other party?

Fuki: There were none. I think it's fair to say that the original author approved of the lyrics.

Let's put on a truly metal live performance!

– That's amazing. Even though there are various kinds of anime songs, some lyrics don't have much to do with the original work or the anime's content. However, the fact that "Sekai Rinne" is closely aligned with the original work will surely gain the trust of fans who may not know Unlucky Morpheus. By the way, the title of the song "Sekai Rinne" is—

Fuki: "Sekai Rinne" is an important keyword that appears in the original work. Of course, the anime covers up to a certain point, so I wrote the lyrics in a way that avoided including elements that would spoil the ending or reveal too much. I often depict the stories in my head in my lyrics, and I'm good at that, so writing lyrics that reflect the original content through my filter was really fun this time.

– There are also many unique readings of the kanji in the lyrics, aren't there?

Fuki: Actually, all of them are words that appear in the original work. I used the original hiragana and katakana readings as they were. So, I think the fans of the original work, manga, and anime will feel that the lyrics are written with a proper understanding of the story.

– As a vocalist, how did you approach singing "Sekai Rinne" during the recording?

Fuki: I used all the pop and catchy elements from both my repertoire and Unlucky Morpheus's. To put it more simply, I could sing it in a cooler style, but I consciously aimed for a singing style that would be easy and appealing for anime song listeners.

– Your voice sounds graceful and expansive.

Fuki: The emotional focus of the song is higher than usual. I wanted it to be a song that would catch your attention and make you want to watch when it came on TV.

– This makes me look forward to the broadcast date. I want to watch it live on TV when the caption "Sekai Rinne" by Unlucky Morpheus appears!

Shiren: Ah, the caption is definitely a unique feature of anime songs (laughs).

Jinya: Well, these days, you can watch on various streaming services too. Even if you don't watch it live, you can enjoy it in your own style at your convenience.

Fuki: We've been talking about TV, but I'm sure many people will watch it on their smartphones or PCs. At the recent advance screening ("Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" Advance Screening), many attendees said they were moved to see "Unlucky Morpheus" briefly appear in the lower right corner of the big screen at the Ikebukuro cinema (Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro).

– I hope many people discover Unlucky Morpheus through "Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?" and "Sekai Rinne."

Fuki: Unlucky Morpheus will be 16 years old this October, but in the early days, we even sold CDs by hand at Comiket. People who knew us back then but don't know the recent Unlucky Morpheus might think, "Unlucky Morpheus doing anime songs?" I hope "Sekai Rinne" will remind those who were aware of our doujin activities and think, "Unlucky Morpheus is still around?" (laughs). It's not a negative thing at all. I'm very happy to have people who have known Unlucky Morpheus for a long time. I hope both metal fans and non-metal fans will be surprised and delighted by this.

– By the way, the single also includes a coupling song, "Ready for a new stage," which seems to be a track that metal fans will love. It feels like a classic melodic speed metal tune that is typical of Unlucky Morpheus.

Shiren: Since "Sekai Rinne" is a bit unusual for Unlucky Morpheus and represents new ground for us, we wanted to offer something contrasting as the coupling track. When bands make their major debut, they often get criticized for changing to a more commercial sound (laughs). If anyone feels uneasy after hearing "Sekai Rinne," I'd like them to listen to "Ready for a New Stage." If "Sekai Rinne" was made entirely for the anime, this one was made purely for Unlucky Morpheus, delivering ultra-classic melodic speed metal.

Jinya: Metal fans can rest assured (laughs). If Unlucky Morpheus released this as a single, this song might have been the title track.

Shiren: People who have known Unlucky Morpheus for a long time and listen to this single after a while might think, "Oh, this is the kind of music they're doing now" with "Sekai Rinne," but then with "Ready for a New Stage," they might feel, "Nothing's changed! They're still evolving!" which would be ideal.

FUMIYA: The drumming is explosive on this one. I went all out.

Ogawa: The recording schedule was quite tight, but since it's a song that showcases our strengths, we managed to pull it off.

– I'm delighted to hear a violin solo in "Ready for a New Stage."

Jill: The overall song is classic and straightforward, but I felt a bit of a mysterious vibe, so I played the violin solo with a slightly Arabian nuance in mind.

– Each part has a spotlight during the interlude, making it a very satisfying song to listen to.

Shiren: For those who are hearing Unlucky Morpheus for the first time with this single, "Ready for a New Stage" will likely be the second song they hear. I wanted the violin solo to stand out against the other parts playing classic metal sounds, showcasing the unique character of the violin. If you think of the structure as introduction, development, turn, and conclusion, the turn is the violin solo.

– Regarding the lyrics of "Ready for a new stage," Fuki, you mentioned earlier that this single is a turning point for the band. In that sense, "new stage" seems to refer to the future beyond this turning point.

Fuki: Yes, that's the feeling I put into the lyrics of "Ready for a new stage." Additionally, this song is connected to "Change of Generation" (from the 2012 release 'Parallelism・β'), our first original song from 2012, which conveyed our intention to carry the next generation of heavy metal. We have continued to cherish and perform it as a live staple. "Ready for a new stage" is a 2024 answer song to "Change of Generation." It also conveys the message that even if anyone is worried about Unlucky Morpheus doing anime songs, they needn't be because we will continue to evolve and show you the "new stage = next world" you love about Unlucky Morpheus.

– Both "Sekai Rinne" and "Ready for a new stage" have different colors but proudly carry Unlucky Morpheus's spirit.

Fuki: I'd be very happy if you feel that way!

– When can we expect to hear these new songs live?

Shiren: We're currently on a one-man tour ("Unlucky Morpheus 15th Anniversary Live Tour 'REINCARNATION'"), and we'll start performing the new songs around August. The first performance will likely be in Kanazawa on the 3rd. The tour will continue intermittently until November, so we hope both long-time fans and those who discovered us through "Sekai Rinne" will come to our shows.

Fuki: Speaking of live shows, we're holding a "Rowdy Only Live" at Kichijoji CLUB SEATA on October 14, the day after Unlucky Morpheus's anniversary on October 13.

– That's quite an intriguing live title.

Shiren: In the past, Unlucky Morpheus used to have really chaotic live shows, but with our fanbase now consisting of all ages and the COVID-19 pandemic, we haven't had such chaotic shows for a long time. However, aside from wanting everyone to see us, I also believe that live shows are all about going wild, so this time we decided to clearly announce a "Rowdy Only Live." Let's put on a truly metal live performance!

– That's the spirit.

Shiren: When I saw CHILDREN OF BODOM live at SHIBUYA-AX, I was deeply impressed by the chaotic floor, and it has influenced me greatly. It's not about getting hurt, but I want everyone to experience the fun of going wild, screaming, and enjoying the show. The ticket sales page even has a pop-up asking if you're okay with a rowdy live show before you apply (laughs).

– I think it's wonderful for Unlucky Morpheus, a band that prides itself on being an entry point to metal, to actively promote the joy of experiencing metal live.

Shiren: It's not about getting hurt. Let's all enjoy the fun of going wild and crazy!

I haven’t written about my life in a while. Not my personal life at least. Personal life stuff under the cut. It’s mostly positive! I’m in a great headspace.

A lot has happened this spring and summer so far. I helped a friend finally achieve his dream of a stable home and job. It was a long and arduous and expensive process, but karma will come back.

I have been increasing my exercise and watching my intake slightly more. I’m definitely not above a snack. I just am better about what and how much I eat. I have lost about 38 pounds since January, and the weight loss is continuing nicely and even more rapidly as I increase my exercise. Today, I swam 1000yrd (all four strokes used) and used an incline treadmill for 30 mins. My doctor can take his Ozempic prescription and eat it. I haven’t had legs like these in ten years, and they were never ugly. I want to lose another 41 pounds, and I know it it’s really a matter of time as long as I stick to it.

I have begun cosplaying actively again. I’m currently working on cosplays for a Hazbin group (Alastor, Husk, Velvette) and a Punk themed Sailor Moon inner senshi group. I haven’t exercised many of the necessary crafting skills in a long time, but I made a pleated skirt recently and I was very happy with it. I think I’m finally confident in my skill again.

My eyes are beginning to show my age, and I bought some fancy face creams and oils and washes. Not sure how much I love them yet, but I’ll use them for the time being. Man it feels weird: getting old, while my body is progressively getting stronger and more agile from my health routines. I feel like a weird poser at dance events because everyone there feels younger and younger and people my age are usually turning in early because their back hurts. And I have been there, so I get it. But I like dancing like a maniac. Maybe I’ll get in touch with my old dance studio now that I live in town. Or maybe I’ll just record artsy-fartsy dance videos.

I’m feeling relaxed and I have a lovely deck garden with a weird variety of plants. I have few worries, other than concern for the wellbeing of my friends and family. I’m working hard to make this year’s Popcult Anime Con a great one for all our attendees, and I’m really excited for Autumn. Life is good.

2023 is the year of dream cosplays, I guess ^^

I can write an entire thesis on my love for him, how important he is to me, and why he is the best fictional character of all time (fun fact: Sauron held the no.1 fave character spot for over 20 years until this guy's arc concluded, and then was bumped down to spot no. 2), but we'll be here forever, so instead I'm just going to say how incredibly grateful I will always be to Kishimoto for letting him go.

It's so rare for a character that occupies this kind of role in a narrative to be allowed growth and recovery for his own sake and on his own terms instead of just being killed off or punished, much less be permitted to also achieve his lifelong goals and dreams. His character journey is quite honestly one of the most inspirational and hopeful I've ever seen, and it came to its conclusion during a pretty difficult time in my life when I needed the motivational boost -- I was fully expecting redemption through death at best; I'm still shocked we got what we did -- so it holds a very special place in my heart ♡

Cosplaying a Dalek

How I spedran my first ever cosplay to wear it at a con, aka a sentimental writeup on the making of the costume with lots of pictures! Find it under the cut.

Ever since I first laid eyes on them, I've loved the Daleks, both as a wider entity and in their design.

Look at this thing, it's perfection! A modern design from the newer, post-2005 series, but with a more classic-feeling black colour scheme.

During my comprehensive Doctor Who watch-through, sometime around January 2020, an idea for an anthropomorphic Dalek materialised in my mind, centering around the Dalek trooper helmets from Resurrection of the Daleks. Except I thought they could have looked way cooler.

I mean look at it. It's got the spirit but it lacks the style. So my design incorporated all the parts I found important about the entirety of the Dalek form. I doubt I thought about cosplaying it while I first had the idea, but the first post I ever made about it already mentions that desire. …huh, it's been so long already??

I never did much about it since that time, though, aside from talking it over with a friend for ideas and thinking about visiting some second-hand clothes shops to look for the right sort of coat. That didn't end up happening, because by sheer luck I found two leather coats to choose from at home, just sitting there unused, and one of them had exactly the right collar!

…that was definitely way over a year ago though. The next time anything moved forward cosplay-wise was early in April this year. Once my small group of friends decided all three of us would go to this year's convention, and all of us were to show up in costume, it was on. With a time limit and a real goal of creating the costume I'd dreamed of for so long, I actually got to work.

The cosplay never left my mind since that day; I was constantly planning what I'd need and how I'd go about achieving it in the back of my mind. There were some things I had ideas for, but many more that I didn't even know how to start approaching; I spent several days in the first two weeks just visiting every art and hobby shop and some more specialised ones across (and some outside) the entire city. (I found out more about public transport here in that week than for my entire life here.)

Some harder to find items that I'd known I'd need from the beginning were a bicycle chain (for the exo-spine) and clear plastic cups (for the helmet lights). Those required dedicated trips and, in the chain's case, much additional work cleaning and breaking it to the desired length.

What gave me the MOST trouble, though, were all the balls on the costume, both helmet and coat. Nearly everyone I talked to about this project had their own (mostly unsolicited) ideas for what they could be made of, but none felt right to me. Eventually I latched onto wanting to make them from buttons - so the problem became finding large enough buttons. After much effort I got them - only coconut shell buttons were anywhere near the correct size - and spent the next few days sewing them and the bike chain onto the coat. Tip: never attempt sewing leather without a thimble.

Here's what it looked like with all the attachments + a dirt cheap belt from a second hand.

Through all the work on the coat, however, I'd been dreading the part I knew least about: the helmet. It was the most crucial element, the lynchpin of the entire thing, and I knew exactly what I wanted it to look like, but nothing about how I'd achieve it. It took me the longest time to even settle on a material to make it out of.

Everything started coming together once I remembered I have access to 3D modelling software that I *knew how to use*. I speed modelled the helmet in one evening, adjusting only the cup holes for real size and eyeballing the rest of the dimensions, praying that it'd end up being right because I had neither the time nor willpower to go through modelling-printing-cutting and gluing it all a second time.

Once unfolded, printed out, glued together, cut out, traced on cardboard, and cut out once more, it looked like this:

a LOT of tape and wishing I had someone to help me hold things in place later, I finally ended up with a shape that looked right and thankfully turned out to be perfectly sized for my noggin. It's incredible how many strokes of luck happened here, really. and there's still several coming up!

After connecting the visor, cups, and a safety helmet base to the cardboard structure, I had a Usable Helmet. Feeling so close to my goal, I still knew there was a long way to go, as I had barely an inkling as to how I'd make or connect the helmet's optic.

I used a small tube of thick cardboard and bent wire in the end. The lens was from an old bedstand clock.

Other than that though, what remained was mostly decoration - and I was not about to even attempt painting this thing; I had to cut the helmet's template into separate pieces, lay them out tightly on a few sheets of PVC foam, cut those and then attach them to each side of the helmet one by one. It took a good while but the result was pretty phenomenal, colour quality-wise.

The helmet also got the button treatment, though these were a different kind and not ones I went looking for - I'd actually had these lying around for years, and exactly the right number, too! Incredible how good they look, especially when in motion and catching all the light. Ended up having to reattach them with a different kind of tape, but they're holding fast now.

So my helmet was done and I had little time to spare, and even less idea how to make my Dalek gun, despite having the parts for it. A classmate unexpectedly offered to let me use a 3D printer he had access to, though, and this opened up an opportunity - so the base for attaching the gun to my forearm was 3D printed, glued, got the straps (from an old gutted backpack) sewn into it and it worked pretty great.

For the gun, I used a clear plastic tube and even more bent wire, and finally for the cable leading to the gun I could do something relaxing - a measure tape that I had to cover with isolation tape. Taped again to the base of the gun, but detachable on the other side via paperclip that I can put on and take off the collar of the coat.

I had all the elements that required crafting ready and put together just a day before the con, then. I'd picked out appropriate underdress (my Dalek shirt and colour-fitting trousers, light for the hot weather) in between working on them.

Let's summarise: it's June. Sunny weather. My cosplay consists of

shirt

trousers

long leather coat

black helmet

gloves

whatever shoes fit the vibe

and I wanted to put a backpack on top of all that, too. You'd have to be insane to wear all of that on a hot summer day!*

*Disclaimer: all Daleks are clinically insane or close enough, so it all checks out.

I decided not to use the gloves and spare myself that much, at least. In the end, the day was even a little cloudy, and it was only about 25°C outside (for my Fahrenheit-using friends, that translates to "way too hot to wear all that") - so the eleven hours of walking in full Dalek cosplay dehydrated me only a little in the end. I think. Yeah that water bottle was gone fast.

The day was incredibly fun, even more fun than it was exhausting, and the number of people who complimented the cosplay or even asked to take a photo with me was absolutely staggering to a newbie like me! It was all worth it in the end; as I write this, I haven't yet had my planned photoshoot to get nice detailed photos of the cosplay, but I did find a TARDIS prop at the con to pose with, so… I guess I can bend my no photos rule and show you this one.

Now here I am, a proud and happy new owner of a rather nice Dalek costume. It still needs some adjustments for better comfort of wearing, mostly to make the helmet less wobbly while walking, but I have it! I got help from my friends and colleagues both in terms of solution ideas and resources given to me nearly every step of the way and completing it so quickly wouldn't have been possible without it.
