Salt Marsh Moth

Estigmene acrea

The salt marsh moth is a part of the family Erebidae. This species was first described in 1773 by Dru Drury. It is also known as the acrea moth.

Description Both male and female moths have white heads, thoraxes, and forewings with a varying pattern of black spots on the forewings, with some moths having no pattern at all. They also share an orange-yellow abdomen with a vertical line of back dots. On the male, the hindwings are the same organge yellow while on females the hindwings are white. Both males and females have three or four black dots on each hindwing.

Wingspan Range: 4.5 - 6.8 cm (≈1.77 - 2.68 in)

Diet and Habitat The caterpillar was first thought to be a pest to salt-grass, but in fact it prefers weeds, vegetables, and field crops such as dandelions, cabbage, cotton, walnuts, apple, tobacco, pea, potato, clovers, and maize. Adults do not feed.

This moth is found in North America, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Colombia, and Mexico. It prefers open habitats such as openings in woods, thickets, farm fields, grasslands, and marshes. It is called the “salt marsh moth” because it is common in coastal salt marshes (tidal marshes) along Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts.

Mating This species of moth does not emit pheromones from the tip of its abdomen but instead from its throat or the to of its abdomen. These moths are seen from May to August but can be seen all year in southern Florida and Texas. It is presumably during May and August they mate in most parts of their range while they mate all year round in Florida and Texas.

Yellowish eggs are laid in clusters on the host plant leaves. Females usually produce 400 to 1000 eggs in one or more clusters. It is possible to find a single egg cluster containing 1200 eggs. Eggs hatch in four to five days.

Predators This species is frequently parasitized as larvae, usually by flies in the Tachinidae family. In Arizona, the most common parasites were Exorista mellea and Leschenaultia adusta while two other parasitic flies were also seen: Gymnocarcelia ricinorum and Lespesia archippivora.

Both the larval and egg stages are oararzitized by Hymenopteran parasitoids such as Apanteles diacrisiae; Therion fuscipenne, T. morio, Casinaria genuina, Hyposoter rivalis; Psychophagus omnivorus, Tritneptis hemerocampae Vierick; Anastatus reduvii; and Trichogramma semifumatum.

A cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus is known to harm this species but there are little data on its importance and effect.

General predators such as lady beetles, softwinged flower beetles, and assassin bugs prey on these caterpillars, but are not thought to have a large impact on population.

Fun Fact This species has 4 subspecies: Estigmene acrea acrea, Estigmene acrea arizonensis (Rothschild, (1910)) (Arizona), Estigmene acrea mexicana (Walker, (1865)) (Mexico), Estigmene acrea columbiana (Rothschild, (1910)) (Colombia).

Why do Bees have five eyes.

There are a few hypotheses as to why the extra, simple eyes of insects are a thing, from aiding their sense of direction, to head stabilization, to motion tracking/sensitivity.

Bees have two compound eyes that are capable of true sight, followed by three ocelli (or simple eyes) capable only of simple sight (in most cases) in the form of light detection, in the middle, on top of their heads! But they're not the only ones, all Hymenopterans including sawflies, ants, and other wasps have these three eyes.

Most other insects also have these simple eyes, from one to three, if not through their whole life then at the very least in their youth, barring some insects that don't/rarely fly or are blind/live in caves, among others. Lepidopterans (moths, butterflies), beetles (mainly in youth apart from certain species), silverfish, flies, orthopterans (grasshoppers, crickets, katydids), dictyopterans (mantises, roaches/termites), hemipterans (stink bugs, assassin bugs, cicadas, planthoppers, etc.), stick bugs, lacewings, mayflies, odonata (dragonflies, damselflies), etc etc etc I could probably go on but for the sake of tedium I'll leave it there. All of these have ocelli in many maaany (but not all) of their species.

A few of these, like mantises and cicadas, have them in quite a similar structure to the way the hymenopterans have them!

Insects aren't even the only ones with extra simple eyes, some crustaceans and myriapods have them (among other arthropods), as well as some lizards, tuataras, and more.

Hi, I’ve explained this before but I’ll do it again! Last time I explained it was less specific to the character and more to the caste, so this’ll be a little different. I use the metaphors and associations of the insect to pick their species as well as their diet. I’m calling the species a troll mimics their ‘morph’.

Aradia: Fly. Associated with death. Detritivore. Tavros: Craneflies. Frailty, timidness, clumsiness. Thinking longhorn beetle might be a funnier pun though, so I might change it. Herbivore. Sollux: Bees. Construction, intelligence, connections to groupthink/hiveminds/psi. Herbivore. Nepeta: Caterpillar. It’s a pun. Herbivore. Karkat: Isopod. Highly social insect. Durable shell representing defensiveness/personal barriers, but also serving literal aspect of ‘thick skin.’ Detritivore. Kanaya: Hornet. Dangerous but caring parents, association with femininity. Omnivore. Terezi: Dragonfly. Good eyesight’s associated with clarity, though large eyes would also be easier to blind. Good at flying. Dragon pun. Carnivore. Vriska: Spider. All insects before Jade are herbivores or detritivores, and all insects jade and after are middle to highblood can hunt. This was to set up an intentionally antagonistic relationship between lowbloods and highbloods. It’s also a new way to play with themes in my personal work which are all about animal dynamics.

I mostly did the human kids as bugs as a joke, because they’re not aliens at all so its funny!! But I had a ton of fun with them so here we go again. I chose them off colors and gimmicks.

John: Spitbug. They’re bright green and gooey boys. Like ectoplasm. Rose: Rosy maple moth. Name association—also bright pink and yellow against their will. Rose wishes she was a cool goth all-black moth. Moths are associated with ‘seeking light.’ Dave: Assassin beetle/wheel bug. Have a gear shaped bump on back, large black eyes, efficient predators, some red coloration. Fits in with his expectations and pressures. Jade: Wooly aphid. They’re white, fuzzy, with rainbow wings. That’s so her.

Jane: Candy-striped leafhopper. Bright cyan with red highlights, food-themed name.Roxy: Pink-spotted cattleheart. Gorgeous pink and black coloring. Butterflies are nectar-drinkers, associated with celebration and inebriation. Kinda clumsy too. Dirk: Tiger beetle. They can move in bursts of motion faster than they can see. That’s flash stepping. Orange and black. Jake: Diving beetle. Dark green with orange highlights, explorers who go where other beetles cannot.

Hey hey! Sorry if this isn't the kind of thing you wanna be asked, feel free ofc to discard if so, but otherwise: A lil guy who looked exactly like this one took a jump at my foot today before standing in place for a good 5 minutes. Curious to know what it was 😂 My first guess was assassin bug, but none of the pictures for species in North America line up with it.

Ooh, yeah, assassin bug (Reduviidae) is a good guess.

Leaf-footed bugs (Coreidae) are also pretty common and can have a similar body shape & appearance, tho I think of them as tending to have slightly less flashy coloration as adults.

Black and white spotted doesn't really ping me for anything North American tho. Except maybe Microtomus, which is more like a white band.

There are a lot of black and orange assassin bugs, and those can look washed out to white in some lights.

Personality - Often withdrawn from most around him unless his close friends or something he is interested in a lot. If he can find a place to curl up he will. Is pretty socially awkward and oblivious to random people generally wanting to speak or flirt with him. Can talk about fishing for hours but that can bore quickly if you don't like it too.

Bio - The reckless little prince of Ether. Lover of fishing and time wasting. Father grew a bit annoyed he wasn't doing much back at the kingdom and was gaining too many lazy traits so made him enroll into RSA so that he can maybe gain some better traits and also socialize with those his age. Devlin has already studied a lot given his childhood so isn't taking this too seriously and mostly still just silently vanishing to fish and not talking to anyone much. There are things others do that interest him so he isn't fully uninterested in everything.

Other Notes

As a child for most of his life as one Devlin was bedridden and unable to walk so always was taken around the castle either in a wheelchair or being carried by his caretakers.

While his dorm is technologyless Devlin was raised around smartphones,video games,and tv as a way to keep his mind active when he was bedridden as a child. He rather perish than to not play his mobile gacha/action games so the main reason won't find him at the dorm is cause he elsewhere doing that to not get caught.

Has a ring that often will see him stare at while rotating on his finger. The glare he will briefly give you if notices your looking is spine chilling but also theres a sadness to it.

His right eye is constantly going from sky blue,red,orange,and yellow colors depending on either mood or something else. He doesn't know why it's always been a thing his father said don't worry about it. When Devlin relaxes or is asleep it is his natural blue color.

If he gets severely angry to a point,both his eyes go black sclera with yellow pupils and will see crystal/scale-like pieces form on his arms and face as if he is changing into something else but doesn't finish as body isn't strong enough for whatever is happening and he falls unconscious for days to weeks.

The gold color and bright red eyes would look nice. Also the black stripes on the abdomen are bee like.

2. Flesh fly

I like the cool stripes and big orange eyes look rad. Would definitely be a more classic depiction of the character.

3. Mosquito

These annoying little bitches would be perfect for a demon. Plus they’re known for drinking.

4. Robber fly/Assassin fly

These fluffy bastards are large (for flies) and aggressive. They attack and eat other insects. Again, perfect for a demon.

5. Bee fly

This is the most obvious choice. It’s perfect for Beelzebub. They’re cute and the pattern on their wings is cool.

6. Fruit fly (not to be confused with the common fruit fly)

I just like this one because the design on the wings is rad as hell.

1. Are you named after anyone? A country singer. Course no one really thinks of her when they hear my name.

2. When was the last time you cried? Hrmmmm. Iunno probably 2 months ago over cirque du freak book series. I cry over books a lot.

3. Do you have kids? I am the kid. Do the 9 cats in my house count? On a serious note - no and I don't plan to. I have far too many problems and raising a kid would just wind up with me placing at least HALF of those problems on them. No. This curse ends with me. I don't think I'd even feel comfortable helping raise someone elses kid if we were in a relationship.

4. What sports do you play/have you played? I picked up archery recently! That's cool. I don't go as often as I should bc it's a bit expensive...but...yea! Archerys cool. Working on learning both recurve and compound. recurve for funsies and compound for hunting. but yaaas my first guess would be the harlequin bug. harlequin bugs and all other shield bugs are part of the 'true bug' family, called 'Hemiptera' if you're a fucking nerd. 🥰 other true bugs are things like cicadas, giant water bugs (not the roaches, but the actual bug bugs), leaf hoppers, etc. they're pretty easy to recognize at a glance bc most of them have veeeeeeeeeeeery similar body-plans. even the ones that aren't shield bugs are often still vaguely shield-shaped lolol like assassin bugs and box elder bugs.

The Shield

The Tyre Nichols situation is an absolute clown-show to me, for a myriad of reasons, but, specifically, how fast these cops were arrested and indicted for straight up murder charges. Don’t misunderstand my blase reaction to another police assassination as me dismissing the fact that Tyre lost his life. I would never do that and, please believe, i am violently incensed that we keep coming back here. However, it's not lost on me that these cops were swiftly thrown under the bus when every other case that makes the news, gets diminished or outright dismissed. I wonder why? You know EXACTLY why. I’ve seen outlets framing this as black-on-black crime and i don’t even understand how that is relevant to this case. So what if the cops were black, they were COPS. Police Officers did this. Individuals charged to protect and serve, brutalized a young black man to death, over a goddamn traffic stop. This is deadly abuse of police power, violent cop egos out of control, who just happen to be black because, in this circumstance, they are very much blue. Until they’re not.

Police brutality is rampant in Tennessee. Cops overreach all of the time, be it intimidation at a routine traffic stop because you don’t have the Jesus license plate or outright murder in more cases than you’d think, and it's kind of gotten worse. You don’t hear about a lot of these situations because Tennessee is experiencing a bit of a “Conservative Renaissance”. There is substantial White Flight from the Coasts to places like the Middle and Southern US because, you know, the white people. Tennessee happens to be one of the most prominent. That and Idaho for some reason. I don’t understand it, I'm black as f*ck, so it’s whatever to me. But so is Tennessee. There are A LOT of black folks in the sate and most of them are severely impoverished. Most people there, are. That’s why everything is so cheap and so ripe for the whitewash. Race relations in Tennessee were already dog sh*t but, with the influx of new white people comes new white money and, more to the point, new white fears. When Ben Shapiro moves his entire Daily Wire hate machine to Tennessee, you gotta protect that investment aggressively, even if Ben’s wife’s puss is as dry as Death Valley. Or, at least, keep up appearances that you’re “policing” and you do that by beating the sh*t out of the blacks.

The death of Tyre Nichols isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. Policing in Tennessee has been this violent and cruel among the black communities for years. Those cops really adhere to their runaway slave catching roots in that sense. The fact that these cops were black, doesn’t matter. There is a distinct delineation between those with a badge and those without, in Tennessee. The Blue Wall of Silence is one of the hardiest in the Volunteer State. That’s why it’s macabrely hilarious that these five cops were snatched up, fired, and locked up so quickly. That fact, alone, proves the racial divide so goddamn clearly, you’d have to willfully look away from reality in order to disingenuously frame this situation any other way. These black cops thought they would get the white cop treatment for killing a young black kid, but found out that they are still just n*ggas in a coupe. We all know if white cops did this, they’d be out on administrative leave, the police fraternity would close ranks and “investigate” themselves, only for the offending officers to either be cleared of all charges or quietly dismissed with their full benefits, just to resurface as an active duty officer in some other state. Probably Florida. That’s where the rest of the country apparently jettisons their trash lately. The cops who committed this horror were black, yes, but now that they traded in their Dress Blues for Felony Orange, they’re just more examples of why Ben Shapiro needs such a strong police presence in his newfound hometown. Gotta protect Mrs. Sahara Shapiro from all the n*gga boogie men with the most excessive force possible, even if they were once protected by that ever present Blue Shield.
