Notes: Rufiphonia is a genus of euphonias, a group of finches from the tropical Americas in which the males tend to be brightly colored. Unlike most other finches, euphonias feed primarily on fruits instead of seeds, and accordingly they generally have less robust beaks than typical finches.

Currently, only two euphonia genera are recognized, Chlorophonia and Euphonia, each containing a large number of species. However, a new study on the evolutionary history of this group suggests splitting Chlorophonia into two distinct genera and Euphonia into three based on their phylogenetic relationships and anatomical differences. For species traditionally classified in Euphonia, the authors propose limiting Euphonia proper to a group of closely related euphonias in which males tend to have a dark blue throat and yellow belly, resurrecting the old name Phonasca for a second group in which males tend to have a yellow throat, and coining the new name Rufiphonia for a third in which both males and females can have rufous patches on the belly, head, or underside of the tail.

Got the urge to draw some Raine Whispers conductor poses.

I’m playing with the idea that their baton is actually their palisman, a little hummingbird named Rufous (named for the both the color and the species).

It’s so small because Eda donated the palistrom wood leftover from carving Owlbert to Raine and brought them over to her place to carve something with her dad.

Dell was so impressed by Raine’s carving skills (since Raine was already an aspiring “luthier” and carving their own instruments), he basically made them an honorary Clawthorne on the spot.

Raine doesn’t use the palisman much in order to protect it from Belos, and also because a lot of magic tires the little bird out. They did direct plenty of their Bard classes with it though while they were still teaching.

IDK how to draw a hummingbird in TOH style though, and the Rufous color looks more Flapjack red than reference orange, so IDK... I might just make it all brown like Owlbert? I’m still tinkering around.

Sunday's bird walk

Since a calliope hummingbird had been spotted on a trail not too far from my house, and I've never seen one, I thought I would give it a shot; even if I didn't find it, it was worth looking just so I could be outside and see some wildflowers on the warmest sunniest day I've had lately.

In the end I didn't find it (or if I did, I didn't get a good enough look to know I'd found it!). But I saw a pygmy nuthatch industriously pecking at a crack in a tree (top row), lots of wildflowers (row 2), and many hummingbirds, only one of which I even attempted to photograph, without much success (row 3).

Indeed, the hummingbirds were very active. I witnessed several high-speed chases, got dive-bombed a few times until I took shelter under a tree, and spotted what I'm reasonably sure were my first rufous hummingbirds (based on Merlin's sound ID and the fact that they seemed purely orange with no noticeable green on the back, though admittedly I was far enough away and they were moving fast enough that I might be wrong about that). I ran into another birder at the spot where the calliope hummingbird had been seen, but we didn't have any luck seeing it--there were some Anna's hummingbirds around, and we saw a hummingbird in the distance, but even with my binoculars I couldn't be sure what it was, and it was zipping around too much to get a photo.

I also saw many lizards, 2 very shy golden-crowned sparrows bathing in a small stream, which was very cute, a spotted towhee (and heard several more), and a couple of Steller's jays. And I heard lots of wrentits.

So it seems that Lilith’s hair has returned to its natural orange color now that she hasn’t dyed it in a while (you know, apocalypse and all). And given that the flashback in “Young Blood, Old Souls” shows that a curse-beast’s feather color correlates with the host’s current hair color

Alright, place yer bets everyone, which corvid’s gonna potentially schpring out of her in the future? Eurasian jay? Rufous treepie? The same raven beast we’ve seen before but now it looks like that one gull that got doused in curry?
